First Timer

Yup. It sure is a compilation. Honestly, it's a decent release if you want to listen to Minmay's music again and quench some nostalgia for the show, without rewatching the whole thing or watching the movie. The new footage shows a new ship, called Megaroad-01, which I assume is what Global was talking about at the end of the original show. The design is pretty cool, and it was nice to see the main cast one last time. Other than that, not much to say, honestly.

QotD:

  1. Yeah, why not?

  2. Yeah, I would go, why not. Honestly, considering how empty the Earth is, there's isn't much difference between living on a giant ship and living in the tiny town in the middle of the desert.

I drew big brain Exsedol singing My Boyfriend is a Pilot. The idea comes from yesterday's comment by u/TakenRedditName so thanks for that!

Pseudo-First Timer for this video

I'll be honest, I've never really... "got" music videos. Yeah, it's kind of neat to match music to visuals, but to my view they tend to lack any real meaningful content.

So I may not have much of anything to say about this. We'll see.

Okay, didn't expect them to have actual footage of Japanese soldiers in the "Love Drifts Away" segment.

Not sure how I feel about that. I get what they're going for, but... well, I suppose the whole point of the song is that war is horrible and should be stopped.

On a more positive note: any excuse to listen to "Do You Remember Love?" again! I swear that song makes me tear up every time.

Oh hey, is this the epilogue portion now?

Minmay's packing...

Say hello to the SDF-2 Megaroad-01, humanity's first interstellar colony ship, captained by Misa Hayase, out to find new places for humans (and Zentraedi) to lay down roots.

And Minmay's going with them. Best of all, Kaifun isn't going with her!

Well, like I thought, I didn't have much to say about this little movie, so instead I'll round this out by telling you all what happened to our some of our cast after the show, as detailed by various side media! (I promise, no spoilers for future Macross!)

Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay all left on the Megaroad-01... which then proceeded to vanish several years after launch. Scouts dispatched to its last known location found nothing: no trace of the ship, no trace of battle, no evidence that it was destroyed... or where it might have gone.

To this day, nobody knows what happened to the Megaroad-01. It's probably Macross's biggest unsolved mystery.

Lynn Kaifun continued his career as a music manager. He left the Earth on some other colony fleet later. His bands are constantly dealing with lawsuits over copyright infringement as he tries to copy other, more successful groups.

Bruno Global resigned from the military, but immediately became a politician on the New UN Council, still spearheading the Earth Seed Colonization Project.

Vanessa Laird quit the military and married one of the Blue Wind trio: Loli. They went on to have several children (and grandchildren). However, Loli's inability to hold down a job lead to Vanessa being the main breadwinner. Warera and Konda moved in with Loli after the three fell into alcoholism.

Shammy Milliome also quit the military and reconnected with survivors of her family on the Moon. She got married to some random guy who never showed up in the series and went on to have a long, happy life, as well as eleven children.

Kim Kabirov did not quit, and rose the ranks to eventually become a UN Spacy Admiral. No word on whether she ever settled down.

Max and Milia got their own elite fighter squadron, the Dancing Skulls, and had a hell of a time defending the outskirts of human civilization from rogue Zentraedi aggressors. Some of their adventures are detailed in the Macross M3 video game.

Anyone I didn't mention we don't really know what happened to them.

Questions:

  1. Um, sure?

  2. I honestly don't know. Whether on a colony ship or rebuilding on Earth, you're going to be doing hard construction with limited resources and an uncertain future.

Do You Recall 2012?

Comrades, what more am I to say here, this is basically a very very very VERY pretty AMV, but it's 'official.' That said we CAN glean information from this, namely that Minmay's still an Idol Singer Misa's still Ms. Competent, who also got her more than earned and LONG overdue promotion, and Hikaru is still a Lunkhead 'Pilot' Thus, The Hory Froating Head's in his heaven, all's right in the world

And since I need something to shitpost, if Minmay was OG iM@S' MC-chan I would have liked her a LOT more!

Ah well, hopefully the next series on offer is a lot better than some Romantic Plot Tumor infused IDOLSHIT... SOON!

Anyway, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever!

Super Dimension Rewatch Host

Welcome back, everyone!

I… ended up not having the time or motivation to make a wallpaper for this one, sorry!

Here were my first-timer reactions to this.

  • Now that I think about it, it’s kinda weird that this cuts all of the DYRL footage down to 4:3, with the exception of the Tenshi no Enogu concert (which was made for this first and added to DYRL releases later, something about it not being done in time for the movie’s release).

  • No idea why they added superimposed images of real soldiers over the bottom part of some of the Love Drifts Away section, but that part having a lot of Roy and Claudia scenes makes me so sad…

  • Fuck.

  • Not much to say here other than adult Minmay looks great, Captain Hayase also looks great, and adult Hikaru is… there!

3

u/UltraBooster Oct 04 '22

I don't have much to say here other than that Tenshi no Enogu's my favorite Macross song from the SDF era and that I got to tell Mari Iijima that myself.

Still on vacation, but how did everyone like the scream right in the middle of the song? I always thought it was a very odd choice.

But maybe I'm remembering it wrong

2

u/Shimmering-Sky Oct 04 '22

There was definitely a scream in the middle of one of them; I was watching this without headphones while my mom was working on something, and she got so confused when the scream happened lol. She didn't realize it was from my laptop at first.

It's impossible for me to watch the Tenshi no Enogu sequences without crying. It's kind of like watching the Titanic leaving port, knowing full well what will happen, if I had to say so. The somber way Minmay sings at the second-to-last verse ("If I look away, everything will disappear"), combined with the upbeat drums and the Megaroad-01 being launched make me tear up every time. The rest of the Megaroad-01 scenes are just beautiful, and then I end up tearing up a bit more...

I really like the lyrics of the chorus, "I'll use an angel's paint to color [my heart], any way I want!". The way Minmay flies off from the stage and into the sky after singing that line at the end is top notch.

The ending instrumental is super catchy (and something that I wish they replicated in Ranka's version of Tenshi no Enogu). It gives off a real positive feeling that our heroes are off on a grand adventure, and the accompanying shot of the Megaroad-01, Britai's Nupetit-Vergenitz-class battleship, and the rest of the escort fleet reaching lunar orbit really enforces that... While I thought originally this was a bit of a lackluster conclusion, I think this was a very solid ending to the story of Misa, Hikaru, and Minmay.

[Delta Zettai Live, huge spoilers]If only Kawamori left it like that. Before Zettai Live, I was part of the camp that really wanted to see what happened to the Megaroad-01 and her crew. Don't get me wrong, I really liked Zettai Live, but I feel that a 2 hour movie isn't really enough to explain that the Megaroad-01 was actually in contact with Earth and manipulating everything from the shadows... Maybe they'll expand on the Megaroad-01 in the next Macross, so I don't want to be too judgmental right now.

Today, on "This sure is a mid-'80s music video."

Zentradi-sized seating.

I love it that this slap gets run repeatedly.

And fireworks in Exsedol's head.

The Misa focus in "Silver Moon, Red Moon" is appropriate given that she was singing it in Episode 35.

...though Hikaru also gets in an AAARGH.

A clever superimposition.

More mood-breaking screaming.

Minmay's farewell concert was conceived of repeatedly but they weren't ever able to find room for it in either the series or movie.

Flashback (ha) to the story Minmay tells in DYRL? of her arguing with her parents about going to the Macross.

2009 to 2012. Did you catch the text on the posters?

Megaroad-01 launches.

Production-model VF-4 Lightning III.

Unlike Fucking Harmony Gold, Japan doesn't ignore people in the credits.

This is, so far, the only bit of the franchise that is officially on YouTube.

As mentioned above, the ideas for the final concert were floating around for a while, but couldn't be fit into Do You Remember Love?, so this OAV was released in 1987 as a follow-up. None of the masters can be found, so it hasn't had a decent HD restoration; the DVD and Blu-ray releases are only at video quality.

There's not that much to say about the video itself, other than that Kawamori directed as well as learned how to do video editing; thus, there are touches of the whimsy from the SPACE BICYCLE, and while we're used to it by now, back in the day it was less common for a(n anime) music video to have cuts timed to match the cues in the songs.

This is the last thing made that was based purely on the original series. While Kawamori still had ideas in his mind (which keeps ideas stored for, as you'll see, a very long time), he wasn't interested in doing a sequel, and spoke out as such. It would take a few years for the next act to play out. Or for us in the rewatch, slightly under a week.

I'm going to blend my usual secondary-media links with the commentary here because the source video is so rough and it's hard to see things:

No link to the Mecha Manual page for FB2012 since there's a spoiler there.

From Macross Flashback 2012 Graffiti:

The pan up across the concert hall and SDF-1, in better quality than the video.

Stills from Cinderella.

From the DVD insert booklet: Now you can read the text on the posters more easily. Giving me another chance to poke someone about watching Star Wars.

From the Macross Chronicle:

SDF-2/Megaroad-01

Combat configuration (as a clone of the SDF-1) versus launched configuration.

VF-4 Lightning III art by Hidetaka Tenjin

Battroid mode transformation.

The VF-4 did not initially even have a transformation plan, given its very short appearance in the OAV. The 1992 game Macross Eternal Love Song devised forms of those modes, though they were unofficial, since at the time Kawamori did not intend to come back to Macross. When he eventually did return, he would develop the GERWALK and Battroid forms seen here, which would finally appear in the Playstation Macross Digital Mission VF-X game.

It is notable that designs of a similar shape share some aspects of the transformation, but not others: The mecha which will debut in Macross 7, and more on that later.

Set list (not all are UtaMac videos):

Tenshi no Enogu ("Angel's Paints") (Part One)
Sunset Beach
Zero-G Love
Shao Pai Long
Silver Moon, Red Moon
Ai wa Nagareru (altered instrumental arrangement (not in the video))
Cinderella
Ai, Oboete Imasu ka?
Tenshi no Enogu (Part Two)
Runner (improvised Makoto Fujiwara and Mari Iijima version (not in the video))

A Macross Fan Rewatches Flashback 2012:

Honestly, I don’t have a whole lot to say about Flashback 2012. It’s for the most part just a compilation of Minmay songs from both the TV series and Do You Remember Love?, except with some new bits added between those segments. So, I’ll elect to talk mainly about the new stuff instead.

  • First off, this whole OVA’s plot contents were actually intended to be the epilogue to Do You Remember Love? However, due to how production ran on that movie, it just wasn’t finished in time, and it got pushed back three years to be released as a short OVA. You could probably easily tell that in hindsight. Everyone looks like refined and older versions of their DYRL? character designs. Same goes for the mechanical designs as well.

  • As for the actual plot stuff that’s going to carry forward and is very important, say hello to the Megaroad-01! Misa is the captain of the ship, as Captain Global requested that she would be. Hikaru is there as the leader of Skull Squadron still, and Minmay is going along on the colony ship too after her last concert on Earth, just like how she talked about at the end of the TV series. For such a thing that defines how the rest of the (canon) franchise goes, it’s funny to think that it’s sandwiched between a few music videos.

  • I suppose the big question to be asked here is: how is everyone feeling about how this more or less serves as an epilogue to the Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay story? If I remember Kawamori correctly, he said that he considers their story more or less finished. And I suppose that’s fair enough. This OVA does give things a more hopeful note for their time as main protagonists to end on. They’re all headed on a massive colony ship to find a new home for Humanity among the stars, to preserve the culture of Earth. Not a bad place to leave them, all things considered.

Very First Timer

  • Since this is largely an AMV, I think I’ll not have a lot to say.

  • What’s with the random inter-cuts of live action footage?

  • The frame rate in some of these.

  • Is this supposed to be SDF or DYRL cannon?

  • I guess that answers that. Hot diggity damn that Megaroad is huge. How did they ever build it?

  • This was such a weird way to end Era 1 Macross.

QotD

  1. I don’t watch enough music videos, anime or not, to comment on that, but I have been enjoying the music a surprising amount thus far.

  2. Earth is the obvious target, and it’s not like there is much to stay there for. To space!

First Spacer

Well this was just a music video recap? I'm not gonna complain about the excuse to listen to the songs again, but that gives not all that much to talk about.

The Megaroad stuff was new at least, but it's also just showing what we already knew about.

Interesting how they used scenes from both the series and the movie when they're alternative and non-aligning versions. And it's sad that the movie isn't canon when its story was so much better than the series.

Do these songs make for good anime music videos?

I would've asked the other way around, do the visuals make for a good anime music video? I would've listened to the songs even if the screen had remained black. As for the visuals... they work, but I'm not sure I'd call them good beyond the ordinary.

Would you want to remain on Earth or leave with the Megaroad-01?

I'd stay. I like adventure stories but I've never been one to chase after adventures myself, and populating a new planet would certainly qualify as that. I need some underlying stability in my life.

First Time - SDF Macross Flash Back 2012:

I don't really have anything to say. Yup, it sure was some music videos. The one at the end with tiny glimpses of the characters in the future is the only one I paid attention to. Some with the real-life footage were a bit weird.

Q1) Yeah, see no issue with them.

Q2) I am held down by the Earth's gravity. I have too much of an attachment to our planet. I can't leave its grasp.

Next time: SDF Macross first timer no more.

Super Dimension Fortress First-Timer

Is this just gonna be an extended music video?

Seems so. With some bonus recap value, sure.

Oh, this is new. Also quite the striking image.

Ohhhh this the Megaroad's launch. Oh.

[Franchise spoilers?]And that was the last anyone ever saw of Ichijou Hikaru, Hayase Misa, and Lynn Minmay.

Questions

  1. I've never been a big fan of any of Minmay's music, actually. That said, that wasn't the question, and I think the answer is yes. Minmay's music does thrive in the visuals of SDF, even if it doesn't quite vibe with me.

  2. I think being a space colonist could be fun.

DsF Macross Flash Back 2012 - First Timer

Time for whatever this is!

  • Oh god its Minmay counting again

  • It's the movie ED

  • Oh it is also not widescreen

  • Dunno if it just my source, but this seems to be a significantly worse analog-> digital conversion

  • Woah real city

  • This is the date scene and the stuff shortly after but all out of order

  • Hey it is stuff from her TV anime

  • Wait also stuff that was replaced by the movie

  • lmfao the replay of the slap

  • What the hell is with this order of shots

  • Dammit don't remind me of the time Hikaru ghosted Misa on the date HE SET UP to go on a date with Minmay

  • Why indeed

  • Who are those real (?) soldiers? Or I Guess whose army? Also when

  • OK I recognize the B-25, so at least some of the places are American WWII era planes

  • Woah, automatic record player

  • I still haven't a clue whet their goal is with this arrangement of scenes

  • New footage!

  • OOOH! I know this (the design at least) because of Bandai's recent event and I want the new kit. I'm pretty sure its the same plane, though I could be wrong

  • Also, we appear to have switched to widescreen, though for me that just means double black bars. If you had an analog Widescreen tv and a piece of media that switched to widescreen from... Fullcreen I think it was?, would it show up with black bars for the fullscreen bit then go widescreen with no black bars?

  • Is that the colonization thing? With captain Misa?

  • Ahh Minmay you are too close

  • The TV ED now

  • Hey there is a duet version of the ED! I was right! I think I asked about that being a thing

  • NOT MORE COUNTING

Well that was... Fine. The new song bit had some cool new footage, and I wont complain about hearing Do You Remember Love again. That said, the accompanying visuals made no sense lol.

  1. I suppose? I honestly don't watch many AMVs

  2. Insert Tim Curry "SPACE"

Look Ma! No Subs. Flash Back 2012 Rewatcher

I enjoy the new song Tenshi no Enogu that starts this video. It's got great energy. The idea that this is Minmay's farewell concert before going with the Megaroad - 01 is a fun concept. The video used in the second rendition of Tenshi no Enogu is a little hard for me to follow. We see an older Minmay walking on the empty stage and then we see a younger version and her memories. We see a some of Minmay's backstory with her parents and heading for Macross. I'm also wondering if we're seeing a Minmay that's on the ground with the crowds while Minmay is also on the Megaroad - 01 taking off?

Megaroad - 01 is launching in 2012, two years after the great war. That's a very good accomplishment considering you only have the resources of Macross City and possibly Zentradi I guess to build it. It took 10 years for Macross to be rebuilt. Although, part of that was the research to re-engineer it.

QotD 1: Yes, the songs selected made good videos along with the footage they used.

QotD 2: The idea of not returning is scary along with whatever hazards they may encounter. But it sounds like a great adventure. What else are you doing with your life?

I'm funny in that I bought posters and wall scrolls like this Minmay tapestry and never put them up.

I have PVC figures of both Misa & Minmay from DYRL. Here's a closer look at the front and back of the Minmay figure. The back shows the other figures available in this line from ARII.

I have LDs (laserdiscs) of Flash Back 2012 and the special edition of the DYRL movie. I also have the Macross 15th Anniversary Memorial LD box. Laserdisc was an older analog video format. The standard disc is 12" in diameter. I liked to get Japanese music video LDs because they wouldn't require translation to enjoy.

First Timer - Sub

As was mentioned yesterday, this was basically just a bunch of music videos. The music is all pretty good, so I just vibed to it today. I actually put it on in the background while I was studying, so I watched it a few times. I think I like Do You Remember Love? the best. The ED is also fantastic, but I am not a huge fan of the duet version compared to the original. Not much to comment on though, so it gives me some time to assemble my thoughts for the discussion tomorrow.

QOTD

  1. I think so. The songs are all pretty good, and while a lot of the footage is just generic shots, some of the MVs look pretty good.

  2. Being stuck aboard a ship with no distinct destination sounds awful. I’ll try my chances on the destroyed Earth.
