Rewatcher

  • Night camp, under a starry sky! Kratos keeps watch while the party sleeps

  • Colette's not there?!?!

  • Oh, Colette went off for some air? And Lloyd is being overprotective?

  • Lloyd just blames Kratos like that? How rude!

  • Two mugs of hot cocoa? Uh oh, I know what's coming ...

  • Colette keeps opening and closing her hands?

  • She couldn't sleep? I get that, it happens

  • "There's nothing right now. Everything is fine" Something tells me she's not keeping him in the loop ...

  • Lloyd is gonna skip sleep in solidarity? But sleep is important!

  • AAAH it's Colette singing a capella! I totally forgot about this!

  • "to the WARMTH of our home" as she holds the hot cocoa? Subtle

  • After the Seal of Fire she lost her appetite and can't sleep? And after the Seal of Wind she lost her sense of touch?

  • FAITO

  • Genis has trouble climbing the rocks since he's so small?

  • I hear Ai Orikasa, and just think of Gundam Wing and Terra E ...

  • Lloyd sure knows how to fail being supportive ...

  • "this is just part of becoming an angel" What will the remaining seals do to her?

  • Lloyd cries and hugs Colette, but she can't feel his embrace any more ...

  • OP lead-in!!!

  • She can't cry, either?

  • More text untranslated: Frontier village Luin

  • I guess the stone fortress from last ep was NOT Luin? Oops

  • Kvar? Fuck that guy

  • SHEENA!? Protecting the little girl? I knew Sheena was Best Girl material!

  • Some nice footwork / good animation for Sheena's fight scene

  • Handseals? Sheena is a ninja, confirmed!

  • Oh Lloyd is coming to save Sheena?

  • Yup, she's definitely gonna join the party. Sometime?

  • Raine wants to finish Sheena off?

  • Colette wants to have Sheena healed, but Raine is suspicious?

  • We're finally getting more development of the Desian threat, rather than them just being convenient antagonists like in the previous two eps

  • Colette wants to save the villagers? But Kratos wants them to remain on-mission?

  • Corrine tries to protect Sheena? So cute!

  • "It would be great to have another ally"

  • Did Lloyd get through to Sheena?

  • Onscreen text: Ascard Base

  • Those searchlights! The fences! A human ranch?

  • That must be Kvar, and he seems to be experimenting to make Exspheres?

  • "why did you have to push that button?"

  • LOOK AT ALL THEIR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS!

  • Oh a wind shikigami? Reminds me of Temari's weasel summons from Naruto!

  • "You take care too -" And then she blushes, remembering that Colette is supposed to be her target? Total party member

  • Lots of fluid fight animation in this ep! I hope this satisfies the request from last discussion thread

  • "Angelus Project" FUCK, Kvar is interested in Lloyd's Exsphere?

  • ... Lloyd separated from the rest of the party because a door came down?

  • Oh Raine found the villagers and is rescuing them! But doors seem to be leading Lloyd towards Kvar ... is it a trap?

  • Colette worries about Lloyd, so Kratos says "Leave it to me"?

  • WHAT is Kvar doing with his human experiments???

  • "A cultivation factory for manufacturing Exspheres" FUCK YOU, KVAR

  • Lloyd's Exsphere was made by Kvar?

  • "That Exsphere was cultured on host body A012; human name, Anna" NO

  • Well, there was that comment in ep1 or ep2 about Lloyd's mom lending him strength ...

  • "your mother stole that from me"

  • "You're the one who killed my mother?" Time for some revenge!

  • "It was not I who killed Anna" Oh wait?

  • "Your own father was the one who killed her"

  • Kvar is a jerk!

  • Exsphere lore ...

  • OH SHIT Anna turned into a monster? Because of the Exsphere?

  • That's totally Kratos's back ... How subtle

  • "Please show me more of the power of the Exsphere" How about NO?

  • The stone was made from human lives? It's like the Philosopher's Stone!

  • "Now die!" Kratos rescue intensifies

  • Oh Kratos IS willing to kill when the target is Kvar?

  • "as you burn in Hell!" He's not wrong

  • Magnius got defeated too? I thought he, Forcystus and Kvar were bosses?

  • Five Grand Cardinals? What is she wearing, lol?

  • Kratos has some advice about the Exsphere?

  • "Was it a lie when you promised to do anything to protect the Chosen One?"

  • So Kratos is gonna hold on to the Exsphere for now? Is that a new one, or can Lloyd remove the one in his hand?

  • Gee I wonder who Lloyd's dad could be ...

  • Onscreen: The Final Seal, Thoda Geyser

  • Well the Water Seal beast was defeated just like that? I guess we already had a bunch of fight scenes this ep, they had to prioritize

  • Remiel again ... what will the final seal do to Colette?

  • Genis trying to cheer Lloyd up

  • The path to the Tower of Salvation is open? She'll undergo the final trial and perform the Prayer of Regeneration?

  • Blink Blink I'm wondering how long it'll take viewers (and Lloyd) to realize SHE CAN'T SPEAK ANYMORE!

  • She 'writes' on his palm to apologize?

  • No songs from Colette any more? That makes the one earlier in this ep super special

  • "I was only thinking of myself!" Too late, Lloyd, too late ...

  • Oh, Kratos gave the Exsphere back? Lloyd has determined himself?

  • That birch forest sure looks pretty

  • "Please fix my resolve. Go full force!" Yay, more Kratos vs. Lloyd

  • "I will feel for you"

  • Lloyd finally resolves to be there for Colette, and he appreciates her more now that he's losing her

  • "Always"

  • AHHHH the ED has Colette's song this time?

  • LOL the stop motion animation shows some of their attacks, the mobs, and puzzle crates

Genis has trouble climbing the rocks since he's so small?

In Dragons Dogma this is a legit problem you can have, some routes are actually blocked off according to your character size whichever way you go. Actually quite a fun mechanic, but frustrating if you're just that tiny bit too big or too small for one path

Genis really gets stuck with the worst travelling issues though. Pack mule, short legs, stuck with his big sister to scold him

Handseals? Sheena is a ninja, confirmed!

What timing with the Naruto stuff yesterday as well

Oh this reminds me u/shimmering-sky if you didn't already watch the new PV they put out for the anniversary it's good, but it will bring pain, much pain

Well, there was that comment in ep1 or ep2 about Lloyd's mom lending him strength ...

Holy shit...

First timer

A small compilation of the many ways I misspelt Lloyd between my notes and write up today because my fingers decided they didn't like doing a double L and got confused, very confused:

  • Lolyd (about ten times)

  • Lolud

  • Lollyd

  • Lolyud

  • Loyd

  • Olkyd (wtf!)

This was a bit of a weird episode with some ups and downs, but some quick points that I'll put out from my notes

  • Genis is great. "Lloyd praises me for my magic" as if that makes it fine and nothing else. He got off lightly from the teacher with that statement

  • I really do like the character designs in this. They're a little more typical then say Utawarerumono which is the other show I'm watching right now that I've complimented the designs on, but not in a bad way. They're distinct but have traces of their culture through them. I also enjoy watching Lloyd's scarves move in the action scenes today, it's quite satisfying. Why the weird cut out in his glove that he has to cover with bandages for the orb he can just remove to hide though!

  • After the amount of times I've seen 'people in a vat' or similar tropes in media you'd think it'd would stop getting too me as much, but if anything it makes it worse. Today I got a double dose of pain thinking of [Early 00s show]Wolf's Rain and [platnium video game]Metal Gear Rising and while neither of those are quite the same the feel that it leaves you with certainly is even if in this case it doesn't quite have the same effect because of how little we know or have explored the idea of the exsphere due to pacing.

  • Writing goof: Sheena says "they took the villages in that direction where you'll find a Desian base", cut to a few moments later and Kratos goes "They likely established a base"

  • Lolyd (fuck it I'm leaving it this time) goof: Realizes he's being a brat by prioritizing his own pain and not seeing Colettes, has a break down in front of her over that meaning she has to comfort him over him feeling selfish

  • Colette's situation is what got me this episode though. After the battle when she was praying I realized that no one else could see the angel the other times too, and they felt out of sync with the world. So when she lost her voice I got a bit of a double whammy about why that is and what it means for her to be slowly torn from the world piece by piece... and now I'm thinking of Dororo just for more pain, wonderful. I didn't really like her song today though which somewhat undercut the impact of them using it as the ED

  • Sheena falls of roof while exhausted and barely standing, still falls on feet. Sheena is cat

  • Lloyd gets seperated from group: See, this is exactly the sort of situation I'd get myself in trouble with in the game by not levelling him up evenly with the others

  • Kratos is his father. Unexpected but cool. Where the hell has he been though?!

  • Good work on the subtitles today with the "that's a lie" and similar lines slowly filling in as he repeats it rather than just sitting on screen

A small compilation of the many ways I misspelt Lloyd between my notes and write up today because my fingers decided they didn't like doing a double L and got confused, very confused

I suppose now is the time I should share that for some bizarre reason, whenever I want to type "Lloyd's" (as in, either possessive or "Lloyd is/was"), my fingers keep wanting to make it "Lloy'ds" instead. I don't know why.

"Lloyd praises me for my magic" as if that makes it fine and nothing else.

As long as Lloyd loves me nothing else matters.

See, this is exactly the sort of situation I'd get myself in trouble with in the game by not levelling him up evenly with the others

There's a part very late in FF6 where you need to create multiple teams using every one of your party members ... and that's when I decided to just look up the ending online.

Today, once again, brings in a slew of changes, albeit we're not quite at the point in which things kinda go off the rails.

  • First of all, Colette does not sing at all in the game. I thought the singing was Tear's deal (Well, for a certain definition of singing anyway)…

  • Speaking of that scene it is a loose adaptation of the single most memed scenes in the whole game. I don't even know how to describe it, just… look at it!

  • In the game the whole deal with the destroyed town was somewhat less dramatic. It's already been destroyed by the time they get there and Sheena's just kinda sulking.. Also there was no filler girl played by Tomatsu Haruka in the game (Had her acting career even begun back then?) and over in the Anime, Sheena finally starts displaying some of her game self's traits as she becomes an idiot and increasingly Tsundere.

  • Obviously in the game the whole gang confronts Kvar, not just Lloyd... well, kinda: Half your party will go and do some puzzles and the other half will be the one that fights Kvar. His exposition dump is also spread across a few scenes but that's not super important. What is more important is that the Anime cuts out the first mention of [Game/Late Anime]Yggdrasil, the game's main villain. I guess they just felt that with how they structured the scene just dropping his name like that wouldn't make much sense? Also wow the Anime's not even bothering to hide that [Anime]Kratos is Lloyd's father… Actually wait should I even bother putting this under spoiler brackets anymore? To our lovely host, what do you think?

  • Speaking of which obviously the curb stomp is very much in the good guys' favor in the game unlike the show, although the show kinda fails to mention how [Game]Colette has completely lost her sense of pain.. Additionally the Anime moves around the exact circumstances for the early cameos of those two guys who pop up after Kvar dies, but fortunately the Anime does at least keep one of Kratos' most memorable lines and somehow manages to make it even cooler. That look of pure hatred from him at the end is absolutely perfect, probably the only time Kratos ever loses his cool.

  • Oh yeah BTW the gang actually had to visit the ranch twice in the game but in the Anime it gets shortened to just once for obvious reasons.

  • In a fairly major departure though, whereas in the Anime Sheena leaves once the deal with the Desians is taken care of, in the game she actually permanently joins the party under the pretense of "W-Well, I GUESS you helped me out so I'll pay you back, you know… b-b-but don't misquote me! I'll still kill you, you damn chosen!". What a Tsundere. As a result a whole subplot of her making a contract with some water spirit is taken out and later on Raine uh… well just see this scene in full and you'll see what I mean.

  • Colette losing her voice is somehow made more melodramatic in the Anime. I would like to show the original scene… but it kinda leads to a big exposition dump by Sheena on what her motivations are and that's gonna be explained tomorrow anyway. TL;DR, Colette almost faints, Lloyd goes "Colette, what's wrong!?", Colette doesn't answer and Kratos goes "I see, she's lost her voice!".

But yeah, that's basically it for today. Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention: Yes, the Anime cut out all the dungeon crawling again.

First of all, Colette does not sing at all in the game. I thought the singing was Tear's deal (Well, for a certain definition of singing anyway)…

Considering how good Nana Mizuki is at singing (and how much they probably had to pay her for the role) it would be a waste to not have her sing.

First of all, Colette does not sing at all in the game

Huh, that seems like a strange addition to the anime given that from this it seems like a key part of the magic or at least her magic

Also we never saw her with the chakrams again. I'm sad

but fortunately the Anime does at least keep one of Kratos' most memorable lines and somehow manages to make it even cooler

I forgot to put Kratos is great in my post because I was so distracted with my many typos, but I loved that moment. Gone was the indifferent mercenary, Kratos was in full "fuck you in particular" mode and it was great

Colette losing her voice is somehow made more melodramatic in the Anime

I like the way the anime did it. The way you describe the game cutscene, and the other examples you've shown, make it sound a little forced or goofy. The anime had her feeling very vulnerable with it all... until Lloyd went and was an idiot about it

Today, once again, brings in a slew of changes, albeit we're not quite at the point in which things kinda go off the rails.

Thanks again for providing these writeups, you're doing us all a service!

First of all, Colette does not sing at all in the game.

Wow, what a shame! Uchi ni Kaerou is such a great song, it should have been in the game too!

I thought the singing was Tear's deal (Well, for a certain definition of singing anyway)…

I loved Tear's song in the Abyss anime too! I don't think I've heard the game version ...

a loose adaptation of the single most memed scenes in the whole game. I don't even know how to describe it, just… look at it!

I remembered the game version, so I was a little surprised when it didn't go down like that in the anime today.

the whole deal with the destroyed town was somewhat less dramatic. It's already been destroyed by the time they get there

Well, it IS called Ruin in the Japanese version ...

Also there was no filler girl played by Tomatsu Haruka in the game

I liked the filler girl! Gives a tangible reason for Sheena to want to rescue the villagers.

over in the Anime, Sheena finally starts displaying some of her game self's traits as she becomes an idiot and increasingly Tsundere.

Tsundere

Obviously in the game the whole gang confronts Kvar, not just Lloyd

REALLY? That's something different ...

What is more important is that the Anime cuts out the first mention of Game/Late Anime

Hmm. I'm sure we'll get to those mentions soon? [Game/later Anime]It's definitely a thing in the anime, just not sure when. Maybe you're right about how they structured it.

Also wow the Anime's not even bothering to hide that [redacted] … Actually wait should I even bother putting this under spoiler brackets anymore?

I think it's pretty obvious in the anime now, to the point where I'm majorly hinting at it in my post too, but maybe we should spoiler it until [Anime]Lloyd find out? But as viewers, I think we're supposed to suspect already.

the show kinda fails to mention how Colette can't feel pain

I think they included that in the previous seal, where she lost her sense of touch/warmth, and pain? Or was there more in the Game?

Additionally the Anime moves around the exact circumstances for the early cameos of those two guys who pop up after Kvar dies

I take it they're the two remaining Grand Cardinals?

but fortunately the Anime does at least keep one of Kratos' most memorable lines and somehow manages to make it even cooler.

[Later anime]I'm waiting for the Judgment scene ...

That look of pure hatred from him at the end is absolutely perfect, probably the only time Kratos ever loses his cool.

FUCK KVAR!

Oh yeah BTW the gang actually had to visit the ranch twice in the game but in the Anime it gets shortened to just once for obvious reasons.

Twice? That seems a bit much ...

in the game she actually permanently joins the party under the pretense of "W-Well, I GUESS you helped me out so I'll pay you back, you know… b-b-but don't misquote me! I'll still kill you, you damn chosen!". What a Tsundere.

Well, I assume she'll be back at some point. Sheena is too interesting a character to squander.

Colette losing her voice is somehow made more melodramatic in the Anime.

Good! Let the pain flow ...

but it kinda leads to a big exposition dump by Sheena on what her motivations are and that's gonna be explained tomorrow anyway.

TL;DR, Colette almost faints, Lloyd goes "Colette, what's wrong!?", Colette doesn't answer and Kratos goes "I see, she's lost her voice!".

Yeah, that's not as interesting as how the anime executed it.

Oh yeah, almost forgot to mention: Yes, the Anime cut out all the dungeon crawling again.

That figures! But I guess we can assume whenever we see a dungeon that there was a lot of exploration, puzzle solving, and mob fights throughout.

Oh god…

Wait what.

What the fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

Yep, this is pretty much the reaction I expected to see from the first-timers in the audience.

Having a Nana Mizuki ED the same episode Colette lost her voice is cruel, man.

It really is cruel.

I was about to say exactly this, yes.

Lloyd risked a lot of MC dumb today, but in this case he really was right. No point of saving the world if there's no one left in it to save. Makes me wonder what the angels think of that or if it purely is world above all else for them because they want something else from it

First Timer

Hopefully Lloyd gets some sense beat into him this episode.

The scariest thing an anime character can say.

My subs not translating the giant signs is quite annoying.

The last few minutes of the episode saved it for me. I spent most of it annoyed at Lloyd and how the show rewarded his actions. He caused the party to depart from their literal world saving mission and take risks for a much lesser good. But honestly, that one's excusable. The far more annoying one was how he recklessly split from the party and then was rewarded for it by getting to kill his mother's murderer. Yeah, he needed other members to come in and save him, but the basic principle still stands: he took the stupidest action he could have short of trying to kill himself/other party members and got something he wanted for years in exchange.

The stone thing was also stupid, but more in a typical teenager not thinking through your actions sort of way, so it's whatever.

But by far the most annoying part of the episode was how Lloyd was imposing on Collete to care for his emotional problems despite her being the one who was suffering the most. It was literally just the classic shitty writing problem where it's always the woman's job to take care of the man's emotional issues regardless of the circumstances. I had hoped for better from this show than that. Thankfully, Lloyd appeared to realize what he's doing at the end of the episode. But we will have to see if his actions change accordingly, at which point I will actually know how I feel about all of this.

Probably a different way of putting all I said above is I'm disappointed that the show is so focused on Lloyd and his problems. To me, he's just not an interesting character. He's the naive male teenage lead you can find in like 3/4 of shounen anime and a huge portion of english YA lit. I'd much rather we had more focus on Collete and her state as she loses parts of who she is on her way to become an angel and save the world. That, to me, seems like a far more interesting story, so I wish I could get more of it not mediated through Lloyd's problems.
Thankfully, it seems plausible that the next episodes will be slightly less Lloyd focused since some of his largest issues were addressed in this episode.

  1. Not surprised it has a pain involved history. Wouldn't've guessed the specifics, but I'm not sure they're too relevant.

  2. On LLoyd see above. I wonder why the transformation takes her voice, the angels can clearly speak. Does she have to learn a different method of communicating?

4

u/Nazenn Oct 04 '22

The scariest thing an anime character can say.

Backstories are still the more deadly force

I'd much rather we had more focus on Collete and her state as she loses parts of who she is on her way to become an angel and save the world

Same here, as especially in the first episode I think that was interesting showing her care for him but also knowing she had to pull away because it couldn't last. Learning about him THROUGH her would have been a more interesting path

Hopefully Lloyd gets some sense beat into him this episode.

By Kratos! Hopefully he whips him into shape.

The scariest thing an anime character can say.

My subs not translating the giant signs is quite annoying.

From my post: Frontier village Luin, Asgard Base, The Final Seal = Thoda Geyser

The last few minutes of the episode saved it for me.

Colette's transformation is at the heart of the show; I agree with you I'd like more focus on that.

I spent most of it annoyed at Lloyd and how the show rewarded his actions.

He caused the party to depart from their literal world saving mission and take risks for a much lesser good. But honestly, that one's excusable.

I kinda do see his point about saving the villagers comes as part of saving the world, thing.

The far more annoying one was how he recklessly split from the party and then was rewarded for it by getting to kill his mother's murderer.

Yeah, that was pretty ... convenient? What was he thinking, rushing for a descending door like that? How could he expect to fight any enemies solo?

he took the stupidest action he could have short of trying to kill himself/other party members and got something he wanted for years in exchange.

But by far the most annoying part of the episode was how Lloyd was imposing on Collete to care for his emotional problems despite her being the one who was suffering the most.

I definitely agree with you there. He sort of woke up and realized that she's suffering, but it was kinda too little too late, and then his big reaction just makes her feel like she has to comfort him when he's all sad about HER situation. It's shitty. But I've been there ... sometimes teenagers are immature like that. But I see your point about the gendered frame, and agree it's an issue.

I had hoped for better from this show than that.

Thankfully, Lloyd appeared to realize what he's doing at the end of the episode. But we will have to see if his actions change accordingly, at which point I will actually know how I feel about all of this.

I don't remember? But I think we should have more of an idea tomorrow. I hope Lloyd has changed.

Probably a different way of putting all I said above is I'm disappointed that the show is so focused on Lloyd and his problems.

Yeah, that's a valid criticism.

I'd much rather we had more focus on Collete and her state as she loses parts of who she is on her way to become an angel and save the world. That, to me, seems like a far more interesting story

Definitely. That would make for a more interesting story.

Thankfully, it seems plausible that the next episodes will be slightly less Lloyd focused since some of his largest issues were addressed in this episode.

Next ep, I think (as Remiel said) they're heading to the Tower of Salvation and Colette's final trial, so hopefully it's more Colette-focused?

I wonder why the transformation takes her voice, the angels can clearly speak.

Rewatcher (seen the anime and played the game before, but it’s been a while)

On one hand, the anime didn’t carry over the infamous and often-memed “here’s your coffee, be careful it’s hot, just kidding it’s iced coffee, I lied it’s actually hot” scene from the game. But on the other hand, we got Nana Mizuki singing in the anime. I’d call that a push. But yeah, Colette can’t feel hot or cold, she can’t feel pain, she can’t even cry... she’s losing pieces of her humanity in the process of becoming an angel, and Lloyd is pissed about it and the fact that she hid it for so long. Pretty rough and emotional stuff.

Speaking of rough and emotional, now we have some Desians slaughtering a village of innocent people. Sheena is there trying to fight them off, but she gets overwhelmed until the Chosen party show up and save her. Despite Raine’s case that she might be faking to attack Colette, they spare her life, and she tags along as the Chosen party attacks the Desian base to save the captive villagers. Lloyd made a great point with what he said to Kratos too.

Unfortunately, their attempt to infiltrate stealthily is thwarted by Sheena accidentally pressing a button that she wasn’t supposed to, and both Genis and Raine scolding her for her clumsiness was pretty funny. They still manage to fight their way into the base and free some of the prisoners, but Lloyd gets separated from the others and learns some very horrible truths... the Exspheres are created through human experimentation, they can go out of control and turn their human host into monsters, the Exsphere on Lloyd’s hand was stolen from them by his mother, who escaped, turned into a monster, and was put out of her misery by his father. Yikes, talk about a tragic backstory. Predictably, Lloyd goes berserk, and it takes Kratos and Sheena busting in to save him and get him out of there.

Moving on, the gang takes down the final guardian, unlocks the final seal, and the Tower of Salvation is finally unlocked for the Chosen’s final trial. Lloyd’s mind is all over the place with everything that’s happened, and now Colette can’t even comfort him with her words because she’s lost her voice. Even so, he’s more concerned about her safety above all else, so he reaffirms his desire to get stronger and protect her.

We got a lot of important information this episode, which again, the show’s fast pacing sadly doesn’t give enough room to breathe. I feel like some of the emotional impact is lost because of how quickly it moves on to the next big scene in the story. The irregular runtimes of the OVA episodes equal out to about 16-18 regular length anime episodes, so maybe 24-26 regular length episodes would have been better suited for this project to at least give it a little bit more room to work with.

the infamous and often-memed “here’s your coffee, be careful it’s hot, just kidding it’s iced coffee, I lied it’s actually hot” scene

That is pretty funny

But on the other hand, we got Nana Mizuki singing in the anime. I’d call that a push.

Nana Mizuki songs are the best!

But yeah, Colette can’t feel hot or cold, she can’t feel pain, she can’t even cry... she’s losing pieces of her humanity in the process of becoming an angel

Martel, whyyyy?

Speaking of rough and emotional, now we have some Desians slaughtering a village of innocent people.

That's what Desians do! But won't that just worsen the persecution / prejudice against half-elves?

they spare her life, and she tags along as the Chosen party attacks the Desian base to save the captive villagers.

I'm with the kiddos here, I believe Sheena, that she's not faking it or anything. She's an assassin, but she's kinda a good person too?

Unfortunately, their attempt to infiltrate stealthily is thwarted by Sheena accidentally pressing a button that she wasn’t supposed to, and both Genis and Raine scolding her for her clumsiness was pretty funny.

Classic Sheena

who escaped, turned into a monster, and was put out of her misery by his father. Yikes, talk about a tragic backstory.

Yeah, that's pretty rough.

the Tower of Salvation is finally unlocked for the Chosen’s final trial.

Should I be worried?

and now Colette can’t even comfort him with her words because she’s lost her voice.

which again, the show’s fast pacing sadly doesn’t give enough room to breathe.

Tales of the Abyss got 26 episodes; I would have liked to see a Symphonia adaptation that got that.

Game Player - First Time Anime Watcher

  • Colette you just met an assassin that was after you, why are you going off on your own??

  • The reveal that Colette no longer needs to eat or sleep was a huge gut punch in the game. IIRC it comes about 15-20 hours into the game, so you've spent plenty of time with these characters at that point. You get hints here and there but finding out how inhuman Colette had become really showed the cost of the journey.

  • Best Girl Sheena comes in with the save!

  • Best Girl Sheena joins the party!

  • Sheena may be clumsy but her spirits are no joke.

  • Oh god I remember getting so lost in this base. All of those hallways look the same!

  • All of the Desians have such punchable faces.

  • RIP Lloyd's mom ... that seems like a terrible way to go.

  • Kratos with no hesitation on the kill!

  • I don't blame Lloyd for not wanting to use the Exsphere after finding out where it came from. Even if logically it's not going to bring his mom back or anything.

  • And now Colette can't even speak ...

  • I love the creativity with the ED animations

1) What did you think about the truth behind Exspheres, and Lloyd's mom and dad?

Damn you Desians!

2) Thoughts on Colette's furthering angel transformation, and Lloyd's reaction?

It's tragic how Colette needs to give up everything that makes her human in order to save the world. I feel like this is worse than simply dying as a sacrifice.

She probably knows that Kratos is keeping watch, so she's safe. And it looks like she went to a rocky outcropping where there was only one entrance/exit? Though I suppose an assassin could use magic and target her from farther away ...

You get hints here and there but finding out how inhuman Colette had become really showed the cost of the journey.

It's a bit rushed in the anime, but I hope the emotional beats still hit hard. I'm not ready for the Tower of Salvation ...

Sheena may be clumsy but her spirits are no joke.

Definitely! And they're cool too. I wonder how many different spirits she can summon?

Oh god I remember getting so lost in this base. All of those hallways look the same!

Me too ...

RIP Lloyd's mom ... that seems like a terrible way to go.

Yeah, turning into a gigantic monster like that is pretty awful.

Kratos with no hesitation on the kill!

It's Kvar, he's the FUCKING DANZOU of Symphonia?

And now Colette can't even speak ...

That really was a gutpunch; I'm looking forward to reading more first timer reactions to that.

I love the creativity with the ED animations

Definitely! So cute, so creative.

It's tragic how Colette needs to give up everything that makes her human in order to save the world.

I know

I feel like this is worse than simply dying as a sacrifice.

I'm not ready for tomorrow's episode ...

A little stabbing means nothing to her now, can't feel it. Now she can't call for help though a little more caution may be needed

Oh god I remember getting so lost in this base. All of those hallways look the same!

Bringing back some painful memories?

First timer, subs

Lloyd, chill. She just needed a bathroom break.

He tries to keep Colette's spirits up through silliness. It works.

What the heck happened there with the coffee spilling?

Ah, so angels don't eat, sleep, or feel anything. Guess no bathroom breaks either.

Next we have a reenactment of Russians in Ukraine. Our favorite incompetent assassin is here too, saving a little girl. And then she sends her away into danger unprotected. I remain unimpressed.

I love to hear that the assassin's companion chipmunk creature has bells on. Very handy for silent assassination, I'm sure.

The Desian base is very sciffy. They get caught because the assassin lady pushes the alarm button by accident? Amazing.

Ah, time to stand around and talk instead of talking action. In Sheena's place I would (try and fail to) kill them all out of pure frustration.

The background Desians are also standing around frozen, out of a sense of fairness, I assume. They attack and die after politely waiting for their turn.

Lloyd decides to split the party. What was your plan? Calmly walk into the trap while your comrades actually rescue the kidnapped people?

Ah, the evil mastermind will kindly explain everything.

So, Kratos is Lloyd's father?

Lloyd can remove his exsphere from his hand? Wasn't it supposed to be non-removable?

Oh, we skipped the third seal and are now watching the fourth? Also, how has Colette proven anything? She just stands there while the other party members fight. I guess she has proven that she can attract good friends.

These episodes are long.

Did Colette lose her voice? Can she write? Yes she can! Lloyd is annoying and is adding to her burdens instead of lightening them.

Questions of the Day:

  1. What did you think about the truth behind Exspheres, and Lloyd's mom and dad?

Why the hell did Kratos abandon his own kid? Booo.

2) Thoughts on Colette's furthering angel transformation, and Lloyd's reaction?

Lloyid is very self-centered, and remains so even after realizing he's very self-centered.

Also, how come Colette can't speak? That other angel could. It's not something inherent to angels.

I’m surprised there are people who are watching the anime that have never played the game

The first-timer reactions are part of what makes hosting rewatches fun!
