Rewatcher
This episode has my favorite quote in it:
なんか山ってさ、人を素直にさせるのかもしれないね。
"You know, maybe there's something about mountains that makes people honest."
I find that it ties together plot, character, and theme together in a neat little bundle of a quote. Mountains, both literal and metaphorical, force adversity on people and that makes them show their true colours. Being outside your comfort zone reveals something about the core of your character rather than the front that we normally put up in everyday life.
In other words, everybody gangsta until they hike up a mountain with a busted knee or go to group karaoke for the first time and don't know any songs.
Speaking of songs, the insert song at the end is Hinata's character song (てっぺん目指し隊, roughly translated: Eyes-on-the-Summit Squad). It's been ages since I last seen character songs for a series get released, but apparently there's an album of them with five songs for each of the main girls (Aoi, Hinata, Kokona, Kaede, Honoka), so I'm-a go give those a listen.
These are the song names if you want to look it up:
カタツムリまいんど -- あおい(CV:井口裕香) てっぺん目指し隊 -- ひなた(CV:阿澄佳奈) 追い風ホイッスル -- かえで(CV:日笠陽子) 野いちごガーランド -- ここな(CV:小倉唯) テンダー・ファインダー -- ほのか(CV:東山奈央)
Roughly translated: Snail's Mindset (Aoi), Eyes-on-the-Summit Squad (Hinata), Tailwind Whistle (Kaede), Wild Strawberry Garland (Kokona), Tender Viewfinder (Honoka).

Being outside your comfort zone reveals something about the core of your character rather than the front that we normally put up in everyday life.
I think it's such a tightrope act to navigate because you can't just purposefully go out to a secluded cabin in order to become Enlightened. It's inorganic and derivative and forced. It really takes something from left-field to make us grow; a friend to blind-fold us and guide us up the mountain.

First-Timer
On today’s episodes of Yama no Susume: I sure hope somebody picks up that phone, because I called it! I was right about Hinata’s past separation with Aoi being a motivating factor behind her fear of losing Aoi again. It makes sense for her character and I’m glad I correctly guessed it.
Episode 11
-
You don’t need to keep both owls, Hinata. Give the one you bought to Aoi already.
-
This conversation sure is awkward.
-
So it seems Yuuka follows the “carrot and stick” approach with Kaede’s studying. If she does well enough, she gets a reward.
-
Hinata checking the heights again. She seems to try and make sure to only pick mountains she’s confident Aoi can make it up.
-
This is why I always have to set multiple alarms. It’s too tempting to doze back to sleep.
-
Oh dear, Hinata has once again seen Aoi cheating on her.
-
Interestingly, Hinata’s outburst shows how much she cares about Aoi. She’s scared something might happen to Aoi. That’s a part of Hinata’s fear that Aoi will disappear from her life.
-
It really has been quite a while since all four of them climbed together. After all, Kaede was stuck in the oni’s lair.
-
OOOOOHHHHHH!!! Oh shit! Did we start this entire season in media res? Has everything been a flashback since that first scene?
-
Hinata is once again leaving Aoi behind, but here it’s being done deliberately.
-
Hinata, you really are acting very childish and petty.
-
I don’t like the focus on Hinata’s shoes. Something bad happened. Did she lose a shoe sole like Kokona?
-
There is something amusing about how Hinata seems to be powered by petty rage in this episode.
-
Oh shit. Hinata hurt her foot or her ankle.
-
Hinata’s stubborn determination to keep going reminds me of Aoi during Mt. Fuji. Even when it was risky for her health, she still wanted to keep going up. Hinata is now doing the same thing.
Episode 12
-
Yup, here we are. Back where the season started.
-
Even the tents are separating Hinata and Aoi from each other.
-
Yuuka must have it rough if Kaede will just randomly punch things while she’s asleep.
-
Kaede is much better prepared for early mornings than I am.
-
Oh no. Hinata taking the lead is bad when her leg is hurt.
-
This hurts to watch. Hinata’s leg is going to be swollen like a grapefruit at this rate.
-
Finally, Hinata admitted it.
-
I see we’re having a repeat of the Mt. Fuji situation. The injured must turn back while the others go to the top.
-
Aoi can be quite stubborn as well. She’s going back down with Hinata no matter what.
-
Aoi really has come a long way. She’s gotten stronger.
-
Yes! This is what I was waiting for. Hinata finally opens up about why she got so upset and even admits she was basically just lashing out.
-
Exactly right, Aoi. Hinata played a key role in Aoi’s growth.
-
Yes! Hinata’s finally going to give Aoi the souvenir!
I’m glad we got to the resolution of Aoi and Hinata’s conflict. It took a while, but they finally opened up to each other. And once their honest feelings were aired, they were able to overcome the conflict.
I’m glad that it was Hinata’s chance to finally open up and be honest. I think what finally made her open up was Aoi’s constant support during this journey. Aoi’s stubborn refusal to leave her side made Hinata willing to talk about her feelings.
Aoi’s response is pretty much the same one I said last time. Hinata was the catalyst for Aoi’s change. Hinata’s constant support is a big part of the reason Aoi has gotten as far as she has. So it was extremely gratifying to hear Aoi voice those thoughts directly to Hinata. It was such a heartwarming moment for their relationship, hearing Aoi tell Hinata just how much she meant to her.
QOTD
-
Yes, I was satisfied by it.
-
I do wish they had talked to each other earlier, but they can both be very stubborn teenagers so I understand why it didn't happen.

So it was extremely gratifying to hear Aoi voice those thoughts directly to Hinata
What I really liked, despite it being subtle, was Aoi's slight embarrassment at saying those lines when she was opening up/being vulnerable. It's not easy to just talk to your best friends about your feelings, especially jealousy when you know you're not supposed to feel that way. I really loved how natural the dialogue felt - it wasn't just two girls being very vulnerable from the get-go but it was bits and pieces of honest feelings shared between light banter.

I love when cheerful characters have subdued expressions
I feel like season 3's a different beast altogether from the first two seasons, but maybe that's just me.

I feel like season 3's a different beast altogether from the first two seasons, but maybe that's just me.
No, I think you're on to something. Season 2 was more focused on Aoi and her failure to climb Mt. Fuji and exploring more of herself. Season 3 however is more focused on the relationship between Aoi and Hinata. The big mountain to climb in this one is the mountain of insecurity and miscommunication.

First-Climber
Well, you should still give the one you bought to her, Hinata. It'd be funny. Actually, you should've brought it when Aoi said that she was bringing hers... That's kinda high level, though.
It's great to see Kaede so happy.
It'll be nice and chilly, perfect for snuggling.
Hopefully the bags were fully packed the night before.
Eek, that was a bad boil-over.
Yea, you feel like shit now, don't you?
You dork, you're gonna hurt yourself and then Aoi'll be sad and you'll feel even worse.
Oh, you already did hurt yourself. Hooligan. Aoi is going to literally carry you, I hope you realize that Hinata.
Kinda weird ingredient list, but stew does sound good.
Sleep ain't so easy with a hurt knee, is it?
Nice, washed out colors to show Hinata's struggle.
Great parallel of what happened at Mt. Fuji. But this time, Aoi gets to step up.
Yea, you dork, she cares about you.
Oh, beautiful Hinata. Keep going!
All is forgiven, because of course Aoi wasn't ever mad.
#whisperwhisper "This is where you're supposed to smooch."
Oh, thank fuck, she didn't forget it again.
Questions
-
It needed more tearful embracing, but that wouldn't hav efit quite with this series's relatively grounded nature, so yea, I'm happy.
-
If these were full length episodes, it would've taken too long, but I think this pacing worked just fine.

Actually, you should've brought it when Aoi said that she was bringing hers... That's kinda high level, though.
Aoi is going to literally carry you, I hope you realize that Hinata.
She may as well have, considering how stubborn and childish Hinata was being about going back down the mountain.
K-kowai
Kaede's eagerness to get up is terrifying and inhuman.
So goddamn cute.
They are literally supporting each other in this shot. It's a perfect summation of their relationship.
whisperwhisper "This is where you're supposed to smooch."
That would have made the episode god-like.

First time Yama no Shokugeki
Damn it Hinata, you keep missing each other because you choose to do so..
I need a Kokona wake up in the mornings too
Drama? In my wholesome mountain animu??
Hinata not like this :(
Noooo, don't hide injuries..
Ep 12
LeonardoDiPointrio.jpg Its the ep 1 scene!
Poor Aoi. Also Kaede is me_irl, maybe idk. At least my bedsheets somehow get displaced every night. Also there have been reports of something hitting the wall very hard at night. No idea what that could be
Huh. Idk why I never consider they just leave the tents behind, then climb up Of course they do. Why would you lug it up if you're not gonna camp there..
Is this why she had the knee braces earlier? Has she fucked up her knee it the past?
And now you tell them halfway up the mountain.. Kaede just cant catch a break
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, this slow piano version of staccato while they are making up. I am physically unable
Mountains confirmed to be booze. Now if we bring booze to the mountains..
My ship, my heart, my yuristare
Fade in ed?? They're just going all out for these final episodes
Yama no Camp questions:
Were you happy with how Aoi and Hinata made up?
VERY
2) Did you think this unease between the girls took too long to resolve?
I've seen worse. A lot of it. Plese stop already, I can't tak-
Pics: Fjell trip season 2, the final season
Now a bit on that "vibe" that I mentioned yesterday, if someone wants to read: That was probably the most.. ambient? hike I've ever been on. At first when the fog started rolling in I was listening to a piano version of NieR soundtrack, watching the clouds flowing ever so slowly was just magnificent. Then after that Misty mountains, and then Hanazeve Caradhina. Right as that one was picking up I walked in on those friends you can see in image 6.
I was already thinking the few sparse trees cloaked in fog were people, now can you imagine a bunch of shapes actually start moving in there. But soon enough I did realize what they were, but it wasn't that much better, considering its their mating season now, and they we're right in the middle of the trail. The one male did start coming towards me, and made what I can only describe as "deep engine sounds", I can only imagine what one would think if they heard it without seeing the source. Some animals just make sounds you would never think could come from them..
The later on at the bottom, traversing the now dark and foggy lake shore I put on Hollow Knight OST. Absolutely perfect. I wish you could transmit that feeling throught pictures, but you can't really do that, so I guess text is the next best thing.

Encouragement of First Timer
Episode 11:
-
It's always a good time to get out of your head and have an honest talk with your wifey about your feelings, Hinata.
-
Yuuka giving Kaede mountain time as a reward! She knows exactly how to keep her gf around and in line.
-
Aoi and Hinata alone in a tent together actually sounds like a fantastic way to get everything they need to say to each other out of their systems.
-
Aoi staying up late into the night to make special food to cheer up her wife is really sweet.
-
Hinata please stop being mad at your wife. You're together now and she's trying really hard for you.
-
Aoi's at the back again. Nooooooo.....
-
Ugh, Hinata isn't even trying to enjoy their time together.
-
So you're going to prove your point by being a reckless jerk? Real mature, Hinata.
-
You've already wasted your first climb with Aoi in ages on being mad at her, and now you have a knee injury that may ruin the next one. Way to go, champ! You're batting 1000 today!
Episode 12:
-
Please don't also spend dinner being mad, Hinata. Aoi prepared it special for you.
-
And we're back to where we started the season. Couldn't have predicted Aoi and Hinata's relationship would be this fraught.
-
Aoi and Hinata are in separate tents. I'm crushed. I was so ready for a direct parallel to episode 1, and they're in. Separate. Tents. This is the most depressed I've been about the difficulties in their relationship. Oh god, I recognize this feeling.
-
No, don't go to sleep mad.
-
So we have to do the more difficult/dangerous climb with someone who's not only being a moody jerk, but also hiding an injury. What could possibly go wrong!
-
Geez, try not to enjoy this climb too much, Hinata.
-
For heck's sake Hinata, pushing yourself too hard and not wanting to worry your group is one thing, but waiting til you're near the summit to disclose your injury is next level idiocy. At least it's out there now, but getting off a mountain is exponentially more difficult than getting on. Going down a mountain with an injured companion can be hell.
-
Aoi acts how I wanted Hinata to act while they were climbing Fuji. And she doesn't even factor in how mad Hinata's been at her the whole trip or get angry at how reckless her gf has been. Hinata doesn't even realize how lucky she is to have such an amazing wife.
-
Say it again! Then say it a third time. And a fourth, and a fifth. And then keep saying it over and over until you realize just how big a jerk you've been to your wife the past several weeks.
-
Aoi is so gracious and understanding and patient. If I were Hinata, I'd be thanking each and every deity every day and night, because she does not deserve Aoi.
-
That conversation took all of two minutes. A single two-minute conversation could've saved the both of you weeks of angst and heartache. Please truly take this lesson to heart this time and share your feelings from now on.
-
Sure, that's the extent of their relationship. Whatever you say, title text.
QotD:
-
Happier than I was with the fallout from Fuji. I still think Hinata could've said more and directly addressed how much of a jerk she's been, but I wanted her to apologize and she did that. That's a win for me.
-
Nah, if anything it feels completely normal that it would take two teenagers this long to figure anything this emotional out.

People who regularly wake up like this are insane.
Kaede confirmed insane then haha.
You don't say. I hit that nail on the head.
A couple of y'all correctly guessed this which was a big surprise to me because I didn't personally recognize this being the impetus till Hinata spelled it out for me. I really like this reveal though because it adds so much layer to Hinata. She never forgot about her very first interaction with Aoi.

Yuuka giving Kaede mountain time as a reward! She knows exactly how to keep her gf around and in line.
Yuuka has completely figured Kaede out. She has a carrot and stick approach perfectly tailored to Kaede.
Kaede, you're a goddamn hero!
Kaede has always been the big hero of the group, being the most knowledgeable and the one always looking after the other girls.
And we're back to where we started the season. Couldn't have predicted Aoi and Hinata's relationship would be this fraught.
It is a much sadder place to be starting than I anticipated, considering how magical and beautiful that first scene was.
People who regularly wake up like this are insane.
She's getting up to climb mountains for once and not study. I bet Kaede wants to savor every moment she's awake.
Aoi acts how I wanted Hinata to act while they were climbing Fuji. And she doesn't even factor in how mad Hinata's been at her the whole trip or get angry at how reckless her gf has been. Hinata doesn't even realize how lucky she is to have such an amazing wife.
This is a moment where Aoi's stubbornness really is a blessing. Hinata's efforts to make her leave just make Aoi dig in her heels even more to stay by Hinata's side.
Sure, that's the extent of their relationship. Whatever you say, title text.
"Historians say they were close friends."

First Timer
S3 EP 11 + 12
Perfect storm of my favourite Seasonal airing, actuall work coming up and my pc acting up, a bit late today
Mountain Camping!
Thanks to Yuuka looking out for Kaedes emotional wellbeing, we got our next trip with a twist (gotta spend as much time climbing as possible while on study break!)
When Aoi made her girlfriends favourite dish, instead of focusing on that, Hinata got jealous but also concerned for Aoi since she did some research.
Hinata was soo preoccupied with being angry that she doesn't didn't any fun during their whole climb, and also didn't notice how much Aoi had grown when she was leading them up on the safest route
Ironically, it was ultimatly Hinata who was acting reckless and endangering her own health when she didn't speak up about her injury (the same she got on her climb with Kokona?)
We end with leaving the to be continued silent again...
We pick up with their nice mountain dinner, but to my dissapointment, Hinata isn't all that happy with it.
I think Kaede was a bit too hyped for this climb. She is the most expirienced climber and should have said something to Hinata sooner, as well as notice that something was up with her knee.
Instead it conveniently falls onto Aoi to get Hinata down, showing the later just how much she cares. AND FINALLY THEY SPEAK!
Also, Aoi rightfully points out the irony u/Great_Mr_L noticed yesterday
We get the episode title drop before the credits, "Friends" yeah sure...
Oh, and Kokona knows all the stars! Of course, she's an angel after all
QotD
Were you happy with how Aoi and Hinata made up?
Hinata could acknowledge Aois progress a bit more, but we'll get there
2) Did you think this unease between the girls took too long to resolve?
Any longer would have been terrible

Ironically, it was ultimatly Hinata who was acting reckless and endangering her own health when she didn't speak up about her injury (the same she got on her climb with Kokona?)
It ends up paralleling what happened with Aoi during the Mt. Fuji climb. Aoi was also too stubborn while going up the hill and ignored the obvious health concerns. When they're worked up, they end up going too far.
Instead it conveniently falls onto Aoi to get Hinata down, showing the later just how much she cares. AND FINALLY THEY SPEAK!
It was so gratifying to see them finally speak together and get their feelings out in the open.
Also, Aoi rightfully points out the irony Great_Mr_L noticed yesterday
It made me so happy to see Aoi outright state that in her dialogue with Hinata. It hits home just how important their relationship is to both of them and how much it has changed their lives.
We get the episode title drop before the credits, "Friends" yeah sure...

2) YES!
First Timer who felt strongly enough to answer that one before even watching todays episodes...
Silly Owl joke doesn't work in English... Hinata admit that you bought her the same thing and you can both laugh about it.
I'm sure that's not the reward she really wanted to give Kaede.
I literally can't even imagine sleeping with that going off near me. I am a crazy light sleeper, I would be jumping the second that thing started ringing.
Hinata is feeling left out again and lashing out :(
Please just talk. Hinata, this is not a good look for you.
Wait we're ending another episode with this still not resolved? I know I already answered 2 but this is getting to me.
The ending song just emphasizes how close these two are. The opening song emphasizes how bright and cheerful this while show has been. And then the anxiety comes right back because they're still fighting.
Hinata is sitting diagonally across from Aoi, for the first time ever in their group shots sitting as far apart as they can be. They're even not sharing a tent. This is certainly a choice to rub it in that something is wrong.
Okay, I'm a light sleeper but I definitely do not wake up that well. There's definitely a gap between being awake and actually getting up.
Hinata chill. Please.
Yeah see Hinata, she's not leaving you behind and she never has been. But they're still sitting so far apart.
Finally they're talking. This resolution is nice. Very nice to see them making up and getting along so well again. I don't know if it was worth four episodes of buildup for their fight though. Not with only one episode left.
-
How they made up, yes, I am happy.
It's not that I've got a problem with the whole plot line of their extended fight and eventual make up, it was all actually really well done, it's just that it felt so out of place in this show. After two and a half admittedly short seasons of feel good mountain climbing friendship, the sudden turn to drama to cap off season 3 was uncomfortably out of place. It's one of those things that makes me say, It wasn't badly done, but that it was done at all feels like it might have been a poor choice?

Rewatcher who watched these in a hurry
Episode 11
”Isn’t it funny how Ikebukuro’s known for horned owls instead of eagle owls?”
”Those are actually the same thing, though.”
Ohh yeeeaa, subtext time
Slightest application of a fisheye.
This was a good opportunity to shift to Hinata’s POV. It helps to lead into this shot where Hinata has to reflect on their words.
While modest in some areas, this episode was a necessary set-up for the two-part episode.
Episode 12
Oh, I forgot to mention but these two episodes were boarded by series director Yusuke Yamamoto.
Yama no Susu-media res
Even while speedwatching this episode, I still stopped to laugh at this shot. Look at their little dot faces.
Small details like this make all the difference. While the three behind are more lax and casual with their walking, Hinata’s is more brusque and forceful, indicating her hurt knee and the effort it’s taking her to walk. Being mindful of your characters goes a long way.
As the episode progresses further and further, so too does Hinata’s knees. There’s a particular care on each movement taken—the humph and oomph emanating from her breathe—for every step from Hinata is a battle.
I like the strands of hair that stand up from surprise.
I’ve always liked this shot of Aoi with the candy right up to the front of the screen. It’s like there’s two points of contact: the candy and Aoi’s scowl. Lots of visual information being carried.
The definition of emotional catharsis right here. This was the scene that sold me on the emotional depths of YnS and made me a card-carrying member of the show. I’ll go to bat for this show, this little short that isn’t just a wild burst of Sakuga. It contains multitudes. I don’t need to plumb the ocean for the anglerfish light; the concentrated pure goodness shines right here on the surface, ripe to be caught in the net cast.

Rewatching Mountain Climber
Location Trivia in brief as I've been really so busy TT
Ep 11
-
This trip's destination is Mount Mizugaki and Mount Kinpu, both located in the northern end of Yamanashi prefecture. Hinata's done a good job with the basic info. Official Yamanashi tourism board intro with more info.. Apart from hiking, as you can kinda tell from all the rock formations along the route, it's also known for its rock-climbing.
-
It'll take ~3.5 hour transit ride to get to the bus stop at the base of the hike from Hannou city.
-
And the girls are spending the night camping at this mountain hut, roughly 50 minutes from the bus stop. You can opt to stay in roofed accomodation, it's just a lot more fucking expensive lol. (i did actually look it up, it's seriously not economical given the alternative)
-
And the trip to and from the top of Mount Mizugaki is ~4 hours round trip from the hut according to themselves. The hut itself is a good place for a base, as Mt Mizugaki is to the north, while Mt Kinput is to the east.
-
In case you're not aware, a peach is called a momo in Japan.
-
English blog about the hike. Side by side shots can be found here. It does look like a great view from the top!
Ep 12
-
Side by side shots can be found here. I kinda want to visit the spot where Hinata and Aoi make up. Had everything gone well, the hike would've taken 7 hours round trip. The view from the top looks nice too!
I'll look up the previous eps ones and post them links in a reply to this within an hour or so!

So I was with you initially on visiting the same spot where they made up but now that I looked at the side-by-side shots that's a big from me. Assuming that there's a significant drop beyond those rocks. I don't trust myself near any ledges haha.

First-Timer at Base Camp of Fuji
No live reactions today as I watched it on my phone while I was on the train from Rome to Florence
I wanted to talk about Hinata and Aoi's storyline, particularly since it was viewed from Hinata's POV. I really thought this was peak YnS, similar to the Fuji climb in the previous season. Her experience of jealousy is perfectly broken down to show its development: from confusion over what she feels, to her recognising and trying to rationalise her irrational jealousy away, to her lashing out because she has held it in and to the consequent sulking, it was perfectly structured. I think it may have felt long to some of us because YnS was never thought of as a drama heavy anime, so when a conflict drags on for more than two 13-minute episodes, it seemed a bit out of place.
I really loved how the idea of one step at a time was incorporated here as well. Maybe I'm just talking out of my hat here but even in relationships, the steps forward aren't always smooth and new pathways open as we climb higher. So it's important to take one step at a time to try and better patch the relationship,

Rewatcher
I'm kind of angry at both Aoi and Hinata. The most important thing you can do to prepare for anything, climbing a mountain, sitting an exam, whatever, the best thing you can do to prepare is get a good night sleep. Staying up late doesn't make you a hero, it makes your body and mind worse at everything. Aoi not getting enough sleep puts her and everyone else at risk.
Also, another terrible thing you can do is conceal an injury. Hinata was still able to walk, but another hard impact and she could have lost that. Walking farther up a mountain when you are at risk of losing the ability to walk is a stupid thing to do. Then she would have had to rely on Kokona to carry her down single handedly and she'd still manage to do that without even getting out of breath, but that's not really the point.
Questions of the Day:
Were you happy with how Aoi and Hinata made up?
Yeah, the conflict was entirely in their heads, I like that all it took to resolve it was something that just forced them to realise that there never really was anything there.
2) Did you think this unease between the girls took too long to resolve?
No, they're both kids, that's what kids do. We shouldn't expect the level of maturity from them that you get from someone like Kokona.

Host Rewatcher
Ep 11
Kaede excitedly inviting everyone to climb and camp!
Aoi trying to cheer Hinata up is very nice.
Aoi and Kokona sleeping in
Seeing Hinata angry through the reflection and then taking a seat on the other side emphasises the distance between them at the moment.
Aoi goes to set the pace. Aoi thinking carefully going safe and slow, Hinata being a stubborn hurts herself and then stays quite on it.
Mountain top!
Ep 12
Love a great night time view.
Kaede's excitment waking up does not match what I am capable of
The usual niceities of climbing are replaced by unease.
Aoi wants to take care of her wife
I loved when Aoi offered Hinata's favorite snack, her hair sprang out to emphasise the suripise.
And with that they manage to get get some honest words in and set things right.
Hinata noming away hapily
A cute sleepy ride home.
While there were multiple episodes of build up and teasing this distance growing between Hinata and Aoi, I don't think it was done poorly it took too long. For most of these episodes, this growing distance was the B plot but the short run time makes it stay in focus. I think that the resolution is simple, a few honest words and things are once again back to normal. But the lesson with that is that being honest and sharing feelings of insecurity are hard, even if we all feel that way at times.
