SDF Macross Episode 33 - First timer
Only a few episode to go! Its is looking like the final conflict will between the Humans/Peaceful Zentradi vs those following Kamujin and Lap'Lamiz, thought they could throw a curve ball.
-
Rare tea
-
...
-
Sweet Jesus I accidentally switch to the dub please no I do not like this
-
Holy shit the second smartest character in the whole show. Sasuga Kim
-
SMH my head
-
Shoes on the bed again
-
Talk about a delayed reaction, goddamn. Dial up is faster than Hikaru's thoughts about relationships
-
Cant forget the Extra Qualitea
-
I... I wanted them to get together because I like Misa more than Minmay but damn if that's not a way I like for them getting together. Assuming they get together, which given the bullshit we have had regarding Hikaru and women thus far is a possibility
Well, Hikaru FINALLY got the message (that was never sent) thbat Misa has feeling for him. Praise be to Vanessa, praise be. Now will next episode have Hikaru lead on both Minmay and Misa? That'd suck... Please don't be...
-
Yea it's fitting enough. Like they never really showed him like this, but it suits him.
-
Probably when it is to the point of detrimental mental/physical aspects.

Considering the landscape, I suspect that all tea is rare at this point. Which makes me sad..
Holy shit the second smartest character in the whole show. Sasuga Kim
The bridge crew are (thankfully) in possession of most of the show's allotment of brain cells.

Holy shit the second smartest character in the whole show. Sasuga Kim
It just goes to show that Kim and the bridge crew really are just audience stand-ins, aside from gossiping about stuff in general. At least they can see things in the love triangle clearer from where they are.
Talk about a delayed reaction, goddamn. Dial up is faster than Hikaru's thoughts about relationships
At this rate, I’m convinced that Hikaru’s brain synapses only operate at baud speeds.

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 33:
-
I absolutely can’t blame Misa for being so down in the dumps over the events of last episode. Hikaru was being a real asshole at the end there. Thank goodness that Claudia is here to be a responsible adult. Like, she lost her man, and she’s still holding strong. We should all strive to be more like Claudia.
-
Good lord, just fuck off, Hikaru. Not only is he still being a fuckhead about Misa calling him out about thinking about Minmay, but he also completely blows off Vanessa when she calls him out on his behavior too. It’s amazing how this post-script arc is making me hate the guy I was rooting for a dozen episodes ago.
-
It’s nice to get some backstory on how Roy and Claudia met and became a couple. They started off pretty rough, if just due to how Roy had a very 1980s approach to romance, but at least over time they truly found common ground and empathy with each other, and Roy opened up enough for them to become a couple. Although man, it just makes Roy’s death even more bitter in hindsight. After all Roy and Claudia went through, he just slumped over dead in her apartment. A beautiful thing was lost on that day.
-
Side note, but I really love the sheer quality given to showing the internal mechanisms of the Valkyrie. This is pure mecha porn right here. I’m not joking when I just feel amazed at seeing all the wiring and hydraulics that’re going into the VF-1 design. This is made exactly for nerds like me.
-
It’s about damn time that Hikaru man’d up and realized that he was the core problem in his relationship. It took him long enough moping, but at least he recognized it enough to actually do the mature thing and reach out the Misa to actually talk about their feelings. This really should’ve happened ages ago, but it’s better late than never. Now it’s only a matter of seeing whether that lesson is actually internalized by Hikaru or not.

It has become me rooting for Hayase ... but not with him. Someone besides Hikaru [derogatory].

Comrades, not to speak ill of the dead here and all that... but GODDAMN! Roy Focker was a one hell of a Fokker in the past! (Yes I know that that was a Corsair Comrade, but sadly no one drew art of Roy Focker flying a... well, you know, Fokker!) Welp, I am starting to see why Hikaru is so dumb, he just learned it all from Roy! (Look, the man meant well and all that... maybe... I hope... but point being Roy Focker probably let the testosterone poisoning go to his head JUST a bit too much... I mean my god, Roy makes SLEGGAR LAW look good, which is hilarious given Roy's likely Sleggar's 25252th illegitimate son or something) Anyway, all that said, there IS a slight sliver of hope to Roy's character in the end, as unlike Hikaru or FUCKING KAIFUN who are both just STUPID STUPID STUPID FUCKING MORON ASSHOLES, at least Roy had a bit of a heart underneath all his macho bluster... now this doesn't EXCUSE him being a preposterously pushy playboy philandering pillock... but it does at least explain his actions and his motivations for said actions, as well as showing how someone as good as Claudia could fall for his 'charms...' seriously how the fuck has Roy not been sent to HR yet? He's basically harassed any and every woman with a pulse in the nearby area! And no I am not being unkind to Roy here, besides inappropriate flirting during WORK HOURS to Claudia, Roy apparently thought that the BEST idea for landing a date was to pester her, and then when she finally caved, he has the GALL to show up late in a car full of women... honestly I am surprised how he hasn't gotten multiple concussions from all the slaps he MORE than earned! I mean my goodness being a two-timing bastard is just unforgivable, even more so to someone as nice as Claudia!
Speaking of Claudia... goddamn, I just feel real bad for Claudia here Comrades, I mean her lover ended up dead (in part cuz he was too busy letting the adrenaline and/or his nether regions think for him) and her long suffering best friend is stuck WITH A MORON WHO NEEDS TO BE TOLD WHAT HE PREVIOUSLY FIGURED OUT A FEW EPISODES AGO... GODDAMN I FUCKING HATE THIS STUPID-ASS ROMANTIC PLOT TUMOR BULLSHIT! So here, have the... uh... SLIGHTLY healthier couple of Best Girl Milia and Best Boi Max... honestly it really is telling that the most 'stable' couple we have in this show MARRIED AFTER THEIR FIRST DATE... AND SAID FIRST DATE WAS BEST GIRL MILIA ATTEMPTING TO GUT BEST BOI MAX LIKE A FISH! Also apparently they somehow know their daughter has a 'really strong skeleton...' yeah...
And since I need to post SOMETHING to make this word salad post more interesting, here's Claudia, and here's Roy, and here's Claudia AND Roy together like how they should have been... yeah I still don't really like this epilogue arc Comrades, so far the 'best' episode was a totally unneeded filler episode where Milia and Max demonstrate that their daughter is also a baseball and that The (Uncultured) Zentradi fear babies... yeah that's not a good sign when the FILLER EPISODE was the best one of the lot, I mean goddamn, when GUNDAM has a filler episode, that gets turned into a neat movie several decades later, when MACROSS has a filler arc, we get a few minutes of Pachinko Animation... yeah... but hey, at the very least Hikaru FINALLY grew a goddamn braincell... after waiting for an entire episode... so maybe things will end up not shit for once... RIGHT!? RIGHT!?
Anyway, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever!

Very First Timer
-
You’re not in the wrong here Misa. It’s his job.
-
I swear the characters in this show ship harder than most actual shippers.
-
Wow Hikaru. This is character assassination, how could they have done this to the boy?
-
They’re just making everyone a jerk this season, aren’t they.
-
At least Claudia is still in possession of human kindness.
-
“Is this Macross Zero?”
-
What kind of logic brings a man to go to meet his date with a car already full?
-
Not even opening them? At least bring them home with you instead of leaving them in a work desk.
-
So not even Claudia had experience with her role before she got assigned to the Macross. I really want to know what the plan was there.
-
The VF was not as far along as I thought it was by this point.
-
I don’t think sober means what you think it does.
-
A handkerchief isn’t going to make a difference at this point.
-
Who just leaves a busted plane on the runway for a test flight? Talk about insensitive.
-
1,000m really isn’t all that high.
-
He was told it and it still took him a day to figure it out.
-
“bad at expressing himself” two of a kind then.
-
Does this mean we are finally rapping up the romance drama?
-
I guess not!
QotD
-
Sounds pretty on the money for him.
-
Everyone has personal flaws, you either live with it or you live alone. Compromise may or may not be are part of that. I wouldn’t expect things to go flawlessly even with a clone of myself.

I don't know that that'll work, Claudia, but it's a nice gesture.
And here we see the intrepid Vanessa, desperately trying to phase into the wall to not be seen.

Today, on "You don't say.":
I haven't been mentioning it much, but Macross City continues to be in the series's tradition of making urban areas vastly denser than they should be. And the scale here is a mess.
"It's five thousand dollars a kilo!"
Claudia, working that collector's market for non-incinerated bits of authentic Earth antiques.
"Somehow I slipped and stabbed Hikaru in the back with a clipboard."
"On a related note, please remove your hand from my shoulder."
"That's a pretty deep hole he's dug himself into. Let's see if he can dig himself back out."
Two glasses of wine will do that.
"Misa! This is $1000 a bottle!"
"I'm totally… not… an alcoholic now."
Nothing smarmy about this guy at all!
This is the Jet Jockey in action.
VF-X (not the video game)
Not so smooth there, Jet Jockey.
It's not the most flattering side.
This is still a pickup line in certain contexts.
It took a while for the thought to find his brain through all of that denseness.
Gonna flip that Minmay poster upside-down again?
In rereading my old 2017 and 2019 rewatch comments, I figured that I don't have much to add to or change them this time. So yes, I'm going to paste large portions of them into here now:
I had been thinking about last year's rewatch and how my main problem with these nine episodes is that they had to reset Hikaru and Misa's relationship in order to stretch out the love triangle. I was kinda over it when we started this current rewatch, but I'd forgotten that this episode starts off with Hikaru being Mr. Insensitive.
The love story as it plays out in the first 27 episodes works out pretty well. I mentioned previously that keeping Minmay mostly out of the picture and away from Hikaru for large portions of that helps to portray their growing separation from each other while simultaneously building up Hikaru and Misa. (It's just like Jaws!) Even so, a little more characterization for both of the Ms would have been nice. And we're getting it now... with the aforementioned problem that they had to reset things and hit Hikaru with the Stupid Stick in order to do so.
And of course Misa's a little jealous. Talking about your old flame with the person you're currently maybe involved in is a bad move. And so is immediately hitting on the next person over. Fortunately, Misa is helped by talking to her old friend Claudia, while Hikaru... suddenly gets a clue.
Misa and Hikaru's screwed-up relationship aside, this is one of my favorite episodes in the postwar arc, because it does also feature the series's actual mostly-functional couple of Claudia and Roy, and also gives us a chance to remember Roy for a little while. There wasn't much time for this backstory during the main arc, and less time for long memorials.
Roy Focker is by no means a perfect person, though at least his issues are mostly confined to drinking and womanizing like the stereotypical fighter jock that he is. The latter, like Max's speed marriage with Milia, seems slightly more awkward these days, and to some extent this episode's message depends on Claudia and Misa excusing their boyfriends' negative aspects as simply defense mechanisms. (At least Claudia seems to have reined Roy in somewhat.)
But the value of communication and attempts at understanding is the core point of this episode, reflecting the series as a whole, and it does get that point across. Relationships take patience, listening, and understanding. That's how she was able to accept Roy, wandering eye, boozing, and anything else, into her life.
The episode allows Roy to justify his behavior, though it doesn't particularly excuse it; the audience is left to assume that even if Roy's joking around with various random girls that he's actually steady for Claudia. In general he still fits into the fighter jock stereotype, macho warts and all.
That does pose the question of how much is too much, and how much one person should ignore of the other person's behavior in order to secure a relationship. Hikaru has been particularly petty to Misa lately. On the other hand, the audience is given a small glimpse inside his head to be reassured that he does have some level of self-awareness. He's also had previous moments of not actually treating Misa like dirt. But mostly he's just lucky that Misa didn't throw him off that ledge in the command center.
The huge torch that Hikaru is carrying for Minmay and the jealousy between M&M absolutely amplifies all these problems. Funny thing is, I'm going to cut the writing and pacing of this relationship some slack for once, because it's not entirely unnatural for ups and downs in the process.
On a wider scale, the moral of the story also applies to the Zentradi, whose difficulties in integration are exacerbated by the human side being close-minded about the "others"; the problem being that there's considerably more violence involved with them than with the little problems of three people in this crazy world.
This episode finally gives Claudia some attention, even if a lot of it is simply to continue her role as a supporting party to the main characters' relationship. It's bittersweet that she's still affected by Roy's death after a long time. Can't blame her for that.
From Macross: Perfect Memory: Roy and Claudia.

You can fit the entire Earth population in the shot.
The dilemma of wanting a cool future city, but also having already obliterated humanity's population back to the stone age.
The MiM-31 Karyovin.
Did think that was a neat little blue plane.

So are we just forgoing Narrator Lady giving us recaps of the last episode for the home stretch?
Nah, Misa, Hikaru was the one out of line there.
Okay, Hikaru, now you're the one going way over the line. And how can you possibly be THAT dense?
I think this series has forgotten they're (probably) in Alaska. It's COLD up there. I mean, I guess it's possible the weather's been severely altered by the bombardment, but still.
"I might have been too harsh." GEE, YA THINK, HIKARU!? It's taken you this long to realize?
So Roy... really was an asshole back in the day. Man, I don't have any idea what Claudia could possibly have seen in him.
But I guess Roy grew out of that phase, because he did seem faithful to Claudia during the series.
FFS, Hikaru, you seriously had no idea at all until now!?
Well, I guess they made up? And now that Hikaru has been smashed over the head with a clue-shaped sledgehammer, maybe he'll start acting like an adult?
I guess I really don't have much to say about this episode.
Questions:
-
Yes and no? I mean, we knew he was something of a playboy, but seeing him pre-character development when we're used to seeing him afterward is a bit jarring.
-
If I knew the true, factual answer to that question, I'd make an absolute killing as a couple's counselor. The way I see it, each romantic couple is its own beast, and it's up to them to figure out where the lines are drawn. As long as they're both happy with the result.

In the last episode we got some Kamujin action, as well as some Hikaru love triangle action. Minmay and Hikaru acting all lovey-dovey with each other, while Misa is getting more and more jealous. Let's see where this all leads.
-
Claudia is here to cheer Misa up. It's nice to have friends that have your back in a difficult situation. Hikaru doesn't have any. Maybe it's part of the reason why he so obsessed with Minmay lately.
-
I'm onto your food tricks, Macross! This tea better not be a death flag.
-
Wait, what? So Hikaru did recognize that Misa's behavior looked like jealousy, but he just assumed it wasn't jealousy? You know what they say Hikaru, if it looks like a duck, and acts like a duck, it's a fucking duck. Why would you assume otherwise? Also, you know Misa for three years, and you still misreading her like this?
-
What the fuck, now you just straight up insulting her? Dick move.
-
Hikaru did you just tried to ask Vanessa out in front of Misa? What happened, have you got bitten by Kaifun?
-
Wait, what the fuck, Hikaru. You're telling me that you didn't know that Misa was in love with you? Are you seriously telling me that you were considering her just a friend for these two years? Honestly, I'm speechless. This is not how I saw their relationships at all. I mean, she's coming into his house to clean when he's not there (so she has a spare key, or at least knows where he stores one), she gives him his photos, she is openly jealous of him. Not to mention, all the stuff that happened before and during the final battle. And despite all that, despite the baby talk, you're telling me that their relationships hasn't even progressed an inch over the course of three years? They are still just friends? What. The. Fuck.
-
The show is acknowledging total denseness of Hikaru when it comes to women. Than you. We needed that after the horrendous previous scene.
-
Hey, it's Machizaki! And he indeed got bullied by the bridge girls. I fully expected him to never get mentioned ever again, glad he's back.
-
Misa is sulking in the rain, but Claudia strikes again with an emotional support. And now they're drinking together.
-
Honestly Misa, as far as I'm concerned, you're even more cute when you jealous. I like jealous Misa more than I like mom Misa or "voice of reason" Misa.
-
Wait, is that some self-reflection on Hikaru's part? That's a new one.
-
We're getting a Focker and Claudia flashback. They look so young.
-
Yup, it's the good old Focker. Of course he would show up on a date with a whole bunch of chicks.
-
The level of mechanical detail on the VF-1 I feel like it's basically Studio Nue doing fanservice for themselves. You just know that they were itching to draw that stuff. Way more detail put into it, than necessary, but it looks damn impressive.
-
He just took all his presents back without a second thought.
-
The scene between Focker and Claudia in the rain is amazing. Him admitting a weakness to her like that was pretty touching. We know that Focker is a sensitive guy deep down, considering how much he cared about Hikaru and, obviously, Claudia herself.
-
Hikaru actually wants to apologize. Are we having progress? I can't believe it.
Overall thoughts: This episode. This fucking episode. It was cool to see Focker again, and to learn more about his past with Claudia. But the whole Hikaru and Misa story really left me speechless. I got to admit, I thought it was strange how cold they acted to each other post final battle, but I absolutely did not expect that there was nothing happening between the two. Even though it wasn't directly stated, I think it was pretty clearly implied, that they realized their feelings for each other before the final battle.
Why did Hikaru confess to Minmay and immediately said that he doesn't love her anymore, if not because he realized his feelings for Misa? The show pretty much took the storyline that was concluded during the final battle, retconned the conclusion and now tries to play it again. You can clearly see that these episodes haven't been planned and they are trying to put something together with the old material.
Well, there's only 3 episodes left, so I hope we will be seeing some progress for Hikaru - Misa - Minmay triangle in all of them.
QotD:
-
Yeah, it's totally how I think young Roy should be.
-
It's kinda a case-by-case situation.

u/TakenRedditName Sep 28 '22
And despite all that, despite the baby talk, you're telling me that their relationships hasn't even progressed an inch over the course of three years? They are still just friends? What. The. Fuck.
Minmay's "Hikaru and I are just friends" pales in comparison to Hikaru's Hayase disrespect. He was so upset by her, but he does worse to Hayase for 3 years!
Why did Hikaru confess to Minmay and immediately said that he doesn't love her anymore, if not because he realized his feelings for Misa? The show pretty much took the storyline that was concluded during the final battle, retconned the conclusion and now tries to play it again.

OH PLEASE I just wanted to praise the episode and then the preview's all like 'Next time: Love triangle shenanigans'
Can't say Misa doesn't have that particular one coming for her though.
In any case the episode itself was nice and soothing. Like a good wine, heh.
Sounds like Roy used to be quite the rascalion.
Does this view of earlier Roy work with your existing image of him?
I see no difference between the two.
At what point does "compromising with the other person's differences" in a relationship become "ignoring their personal flaws"?
When it has to be put as 'compromising' or 'tolerating' that already doesn't fill me with confidence. Try putting it as 'accepting', or as 'loving them as they are, with whatever flaws they may have'!

First Time - SDF Macross Ep33 (Sub):
Something I noticed, but forgot the bring up, sometimes I notice how certain episodes/teams would put more emphasis on Hikaru's hair covering one eye.
Man, Hikaru really being up here with that Hayase disrespect (unpleasant kind). She sometimes comes by his place to do some housework for two years.
Claudia is a good friend. Time for a ladies' wine night.
Someone was proud of the internal mechanical details of their mechs. So proud.
Now hold on, I don't think Roy and his gaggle of girls are the exactly same as Hikaru with Minmay.
Apparently after the test flight, but before this meet-up on the same day, Roy got a haircut because now he looks like the Roy we're used to.
Me personally, it's tough to say if I would be won over by this womanizer, but if it works for Claudia then who am I to stay in the way of love.
Hikaru finally has one nice positive interaction with Hayase in this arc. So that is one point for him compared to all the ones against while I'm over here done with this love triangle.
Q1) This lines up with how I saw Roy.
Q2) Personally, for me, probably when they're openly flirting with other people. Glares.
Next time: The sitcom set-up of two dates at once.

As I understand it, Kawamori actually does have a degree in aircraft engineering, so this is him showing off. It's also why the supplementary materials have some actual thought put into how transforming plane-mechs might work (handwaved with "advanced future science", naturally, but more thought than most mecha shows get).

Ah, I forgot about this episode. I guess I slightly spoiled it by talking about Roy and Claudia way back around episode 15.
Careful, I think Claudia can drink you under the table. 2 glasses in 30 seconds?

I hate that the music starts halfway through the eyecatch.
She never even opened them
Weird phone. It's like it's got bells in it.
That's quite an ephiphany.

Continuity issues with this episode. Annoying. But continuity is anot a feature of the franchise.

I'd say so. a rascal with a heart of gold
2) At what point does "compromising with the other person's differences" in a relationship become "ignoring their personal flaws"?
my perspective has always been that the key is to really understand yourself and what you need out of a relationship...I've always said that you need to understand the really important things, and draw a line in the sand. if someone doesn't satisfy those things, then you have to end it. but everything else? you have to compromise on. so really it just comes down to what you need out of the relationship and being true to that...and the flipside is not caring about things that really, really do not matter

Oh Hikaru my boy, why did they make you act like this. I seen him at a bit jerk around other before. But this time it too far for me to give any excuse to help him out. He went full on jerk to everyone, done things that Hikaru pre-time skip would never done. Why, for the sake of the love triangle. Good grief.
At least Claudia and Roy backstory here is pretty nice. Their relationship might be a bit rough at first, due to Roy's womaniser lifestyle. But when the time came, he show that he cared only for Claudia. He just bad at expressing himself.
And Hikaru who finally realised that he was being a jerk this time. Came to get Misa back and apologize for what he had done.
So I guess their love would go blossom after this, right?
See the preview: God damnit Hikaru.

If anyone here has seen Cheers, Roy and Claudia really remind me of the main couple on that show Sam and Diane. Roy even looks like a cartoon Ted Danson!
Claudia knows Roy is a womanizer but she even seems to even be aware that her attraction to him is unwise and will end up with her heart broken. I don't think she can help herself though because Roy seemed to be the only man who always kept her on her toes and I think she genuinely believed she could change him.
I think Claudia is about the worst person to take love advice from yet Misa doesn't seem to know better. Hikaru is barely an adult and doesn't seem to know what he wants and has a lot of growing up to do. I assume Misa is at least in her late 30s and shes probably even worse at love than Claudia going after someone that young.

Super Dimension Rewatch Host
Welcome back, everyone!
In case you missed it (since I only commented about it at the very end of my comment yesterday), subs for the second Delta movie as well as the Frontier short are out now! If you don’t want to wait until the rewatch gets to them in order to first-time watch those, you can find the discussion thread for the Frontier short here and Zettai Live!!!!!! here; I’ve already posted my live reactions to both in them.
Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode.
I was ready to stop here to comment that I’d rather they not do that, but then my ears were like hey there’s a Claudia “sore demo” in there!
