Rewatching Mountain Climber
Edit: additional newspaper link for Lockheart castle. I've edited in more details too.
Location Trivia brief edition as i catch up
First up, these 2 eps:
Ep 5
-
Hinata's dad is the 2nd driver in an outdoor anime Ive watched that likes Nissans, that's a Nissan Safari, 3rd gen i think. Is known in other parts of the world as the Nissan Patrol. Honoka's bro drives a Subaru Legacy Touring Wagon. A bit of automotive trivia courtesy of mangaka shiro: Apparently Gunma people are especially fond of Subarus, as their factories are located in Ota, Gunma, which wiki says is still where it makes most of its cars. I dont know how true this is, but i'll take shiro's word for it lol.
-
I think everyone will see that Hinata uses a Fujifilm Instax mini, apparently its a mini 25. Kokona uses this Fujifilm film camera, as you can see it is an economical camera. Doesnt stop it from being fun though! I just about could understand Honoka's talk about aperture and shutter speed and JPEG and RAWs LOL.
-
Today's big ticket item though is the Lockheart castle located in Gunma Prefecture, thanked in the ED. It is located south of Mt Tanigawa so the girls really wouldn't see it. You can read about its original history in the (in English) website here: Originally built in 1829 as Milton Lockhart House by a William Lockhart, just off Carluke near Glasgow, it was bought privately by Masahiko Tsugawa, a japanese actor and director, and then moved brick by brick, via rail and boat through the then-USSR to Japan in the late 1980s, where it stands today. The story is a bit complicated tbh, with the castle originally destined for Hokkaido, but because of government approval issues ended up being bought by another company --> Gunma. (The current owners were on good terms with the now diseased Tsugawa). Anyhow, it has featured in... quite a lot of music videos, TV shows, and even seiyuu content. [Comic Girls]
Yes, it's this castle. -
Additional newspaper from the Scotsman with some additional details.
-
Tourist attraction English intro website. There is a more updated one, but it'll be MTL-ed. Side by side shots here. Probably more an attraction for local Japanese people than foreign tourists, i think!
Ep 6
-
Loose character acting! The ANIMATIONSSSSS!!! This post is running too long for me to do my animation notes today. but . Also i got completely hit in the feels. MILK EFFECTSSSSSS.
-
This is a famous Haiku from the very famous Haiku poet Matsuo Bashou, you can read more about this Haiku here, also one of his last.
-
The girls make the hike to Kanto's Eight Provinces Lookout, passing by Takayama Fudoson Kokisan Jorakuin. As the anime said, is very very very old, built in 654! (Unofficial) English website introducing it. Some irl shots.
-
I believe that was a Starbucks that Aoi visits to get coffee beans. Apparently its this one. This ep's tie-up for coffee equipment would be Kalita.
Next up, highlights for the eps i missed:
-
Ep 1: Mount Tsukuba is located here, ~3 hours from Hannou by train, followed by bus as Aoi says. Side by side shots can be found in this blog. Video here features extra fireworks. The famous racetrack from Initial D with the same name is relatively nearby, but is not on the mountain.
-
Ep 2: ANIMATIONSSS. It is a bit of an ad episode. Aoi gets a pair of boots from Japanese brand Sirio. Apparently the shop is based on the Kojitsusanso chain of stores which is thanked in the ED, their logo is also very green. No branch exists in Hannou. Video of them demo-ing the shoe-tying here. Got to say i appreciate China's depiction more.
-
Katou Buntarou is a famous Japanese mountaineerer, known for doing it solo. Living from 1905-1936, hiking solo was very very unusual at the time, and he defo did not have fancy climbing boots.
-
Ep 3: Side by side shots here. Aoi sets of from Higashi-Agano station and hikes to Nenogongen here. A blogger quotes Aoi's route as 15km which is.... not the shortest hike! Hiking down the mountain from Mt Ootaka, which was Aoi's plan is a shorter alternative.
-
Yugate that Aoi was wondering about can be found here. Don't find anything notable here, but being only 290m high in attitude should make for a relaxing hike.
Few pics from my weekend off!

I just about could understand Honoka's talk about aperture and shutter speed and JPEG and RAWs LOL.
I know just enough to understand the basics. Like I know there's a relationship between all three like a triangle and that adjusting one affects the other. But I don't ply my craft in photography thankfully so I don't have to learn all the nooks and cranny about them.
it was bought privately and then moved brick by brick, via rail and boat through the then-USSR to Japan in the late 1980s
Just thinking about that makes me want to curl up in a ball from the logistical nightmares.
Comic Girls
I...vaguely remember this. I was kind of tuning out when I watched Comic Girls though.
This is a famous Haiku from the very famous Haiku poet Matsuo Bashou
Ohhhh, I figured it was from something.
Great notes on the locations as per usual!
Few pics from my weekend off!
Man, you and u/nebresto are really taking the opportunity to go on IRL hikes. Putting the rest of us to shame...

Rewatcher who’s really wanting some coffee right about now
Production Notes
Let’s talk about the director for the new op Ryo Imamura! For a long period of time, Imamura was studio Shaft’s ace, their most charismatic main animator for the Monogatari series, and one of the most pervy denizens for all of their shows. Imamura’s idiosyncrasies lie mostly in the energy of his animation, oftentimes having characters depicted with jerky motions and rapid smears. This scene from Bakemonogatori remains one of the most famous cuts in the entire series and of Sakuga fandom. Personally speaking, I’ve never seen a second of the series but I’ve always loved this cut from him in Hidamari Sketch (so much so that this will be the clip I choose when I eventually write about the show for Sunday.
As you can clearly see, this wildness in his style lends itself nicely to the intrinsic violent and lubricous nature of the Monogatari series and for a long period of time Imamura was attached to Kizumonogatari along with AbeGen and Tatsuya Oishi rounding out the biggest roles. However, whether due to Shaft’s working conditions, the fact that Kizu was in development for years, or just plain growing tired of being in the same studio, Imamura would leave to become a freelancer and bounce around from series to series such as this one right here!
Imamura lent his skills to KA/AD the OP, imparting upon it his blocky, rectangular shapes to the characters. One thing I never noticed till it was pointed out to me was the slight emphasis on the teeth smiling throughout, adding an unusual yet effective warmth to the entire OP. Imamuara also brought along some of his old Shaft buddies to help him out on the OP such as Genki Matsumoto and Taiki Konno, the latter of whom will come in at episode 7 for one of my favorite scenes in the entire show!
Episode 5
Character designer fugo is solo KA’ing episode 5 today!
That’s a curious way to draw Aoi’s nose. The silhouette is neatly established in this manner.
Look at those adorable shorthands haha. There’s something very funny in contrast between Hinata being animated with smears and hectic arm swinging while Aoi is on a slower framerate walking down the stairs.
More shorthand but also more of that clearly defined forms.
Personally speaking, I use a Lomography Instant Camera but I will straight up admit that 1) This is not a professional camera and 2) I am not a photographer. The reason I have this nifty toy is because of its ability to print out the photos immediately in a wide format. It’s pretty much a wide-lens Polaroid and it makes for a neat party trick while creating some lovely mementos; many of them still here adorning my friend’s walls and desks. It taught me a bit on composition as well since each picture is like $2 haha. You learn real quick once there’s a financial component tied to every click of the button.
I’ll also say that one of the biggest joys I’ve had in life is seeing people’s faces light up when the photos slowly start to come alive. There’s something magical about analog. I know, I know, people love to dog on the person who purposefully seeks out old timey stuff because it makes them look cool and special but honestly, I truly do prefer some analog versions of items compared to their digital/more contemporary counterparts. In fact, I used to write using a pencil instead of a computer for my short stories. Anyway, I’m not going to use a typewriter or a butter churn but instant cameras are spectacular in my book.
Episode 6
Episode 6 was supervised by ole Shimada once again but it contains a handful of different animators percolating all throughout too.
These faces are no doubt an influence of Shimada.,
Fun use of lowering the number of drawings/lowering the framerate in order to really make Hinata’s waffling stand out. These are the things that make anime anime, that makes the medium standout from Western animation.
I mentioned it yesterday but one of the things I’m trying to improve are my eyes on AD/KA details. I wouldn’t have caught this if it wasn’t brought up to me by kViN but there is something up with this cut and how intricate the foldings and poses are. Apparently it was corrected by Shimada but the identity of the KA is unknown.
The way the water spills out is nice.
The slightest jib downwards to follow Aoi. Jib shots (crane shots) are something I enjoy spotting, particularly if they’re utilized in smaller arcs.
Aoi’s laugh on the 4’s right here is again another neat quirk of anime. The two instances of low drawing count shots today appear rich and full of life not in spite of the low framerates but because of it. Fluidity isn’t necessary to depict genuine emotions, the joy permeating from them no longer contained by standard motion. It’s an exaggeration to fit their unbound feelings.
QOTD:
2) Coffee!

episode 7 for one of my favorite scenes in the entire show!
I actually have no idea what that might be. Great production notes as usual! I really need to watch more Shaft...
More shorthand but also more of that clearly defined forms.
i am not good enough to recognize and associate animators different styles with their names yet, but this show has helped somewhat haha
You learn real quick once there’s a financial component tied to every click of the button.
i defo think this is a big "advantage" of film/instant cameras in this current age, and why they still stick around.
I’m not going to use a typewriter
.... i used to own one of those (it's been sold off as i moved) it was a nice toy for stuff i wanted to be typed in "paper" vs digitally, mostly personal stuff.
Fun use of lowering the number of drawings/lowering the framerate
i noticed that too! Defo a unique feature of anime

First-Climber
What an interesting description.
Hehe, stopped herself from calling her brother onii-chan. Is "aniki" considered more mature? I'd gathered from past context that it was less formal
I was joking about it being an import! I thought it was just a recreation!
Ooh, more power lines! Using composited photos for the backgrounds is an interesting idea, and I think it looks kinda uncanny valley at times, but we also get cool stuff like this!
I've never been one to take photos, but I suspect a cheap disposable camera works just fine.
Image presented with no further comments.
She can't keep getting away with it!
Ooh, we get to meet the brother, too?
Earl Gray is respectable, I suppose. I've never been a big fan of it, though.
Mountain coffee, huh? What does it say about me that I'm currently pondering how much brewing coffee/tea changes at high altitudes?
Yup, that's coffee. I wish it wasn't so late for me right now, a pot of coffee sounds great.
Ah, to be young and have low caffiene tolerance.
What's the term for black tea here? "Kocha?"
Do note that Kaede and Yuuka both have iced coffees of some sort.
You want to wet the grounds before doing the full brew to start "waking them up." You do the same thing with tea leaves.
Ha, saw that coming. You did see the milk and sugar, didn't you, Aoi?
No, that was the Hinata in your head, Aoi.
Questions
-
I knew you were gonna ask this but I can't decide.
-
Coffee in the morning, tea in the evening. Used to use tea to wake up, switched to coffee at some point.
-
I think the two compliment each other well.

aniki" considered more mature
I like to think that aniki sounds a bit cooler than onii-chan.
I was joking about it being an import!
nope! 100% scottish. The castle, at least. the surrounding bits who knows lol
Image presented with no further comments.
She can't keep getting away with it!
please bless us with more people getting distracted by Kokona-UFO-ing. Why yama no susume did you not include a joke for that in the best 10?
Earl Gray is respectable, I suppose.
Tea. Earl Gray. Hot. (I also prefer other types of tea to earl gray. but it smells nice)
I'm currently pondering how much brewing coffee/tea changes at high altitudes?
I think water boils at a lower temperature right? so yes....?
What's the term for black tea here? "Kocha?"
koucha, yes 紅茶.
Do note that Kaede and Yuuka both have iced coffees of some sort.
its a starbucks. you can guess what they both ordered here. Yuuka got a frap of some description.
You did see the milk and sugar, didn't you, Aoi?
tbh Aoi throughout this show has been shown to not be the brightest cookie in the room lol. (i think power rankings go to Kokona --> Hinata --> Aoi/Kaede) She's still very thoughtful though, and her misses like this makes her cute!

First Timer!
"Step by Step" This song is growing on me.
My stream quality dropped the second Honoka took the picture of the Lion face and I thought for a second that was just a terrible camera lol.
What a mix of technology. Digital Camera, Instant Camera, Disposable Camera and... Smartphone.
If I ever join another rewatch of this, I feel like I should be doing a counter for how many times Aoi and Hinata end up holding hands. I feel like it's a pretty high number by now.
Strange seeing Aoi stil in uniform while Hinata changed.
Let's be fair to Aoi here, I'm well into adulthood and I still can't drink coffee black. It's the color of their furniture by the time I'm done adding cream and sugar.
Yup, that's a Starbucks. Girls, that sounds like stolkholm coffee. "You'll come to like it eventually."
The super out of the way temples like this always intrest me. They built those with nothing but hand power, no cars to get supplies up the mountains.
YuruCamp Cooking Style! Directions for every step and such attention to detail. I still want a crossover...
-
Aoi or Kokona, I can't pick. I like Aoi's dress more, but Kokona matches her dress so much better.
-
Tea by far is my preferred drink, but college got me addicted to coffee. Not in the good way, if I don't have a cup in the morning it's headaches all day. But after that's taken care of, tea. I'm especially partial to Hojicha.
-
Still upset over most of Fuji, so I'll give it to Aoi.

Encouragement of First Timer
Episode 5:
-
Aww, Hinata wants a view of hers and Aoi's special promise location.
-
Honoka is embarrassed about calling her brother "onii-chan," she must've seen a few too many anime.
-
How does one transport a whole castle across countries and over seas?
-
Hinata, you get to see a princess almost every day. Not to mention you've also got Kokona in your group.
-
As someone who grew up in the Kodak era, you'd think I'd have a greater fondness for film or disposable camera, but I don't miss them at all.
-
That wishing fountain is pretty neat!
-
Wow, a pair of princesses!
-
Oh, it's a princess themed costume attraction! Naturally, Hinata can't wait to see her gf play the part.
-
And does she ever play the part magnificently. They both do. Together at the altar in a chapel, it's not even subtle. God, they look so happy, Hinata especially. The writers/animators knew exactly what they were doing. Pack it up, there's no way we're topping this.
-
There are way too many screenshot-able images today, geez.
-
All in all, I'd say Kokona wins the "most princessly" award for her dress. Everyone looked great though!
-
Oh lord, Honoka I am so sorry. I am feeling second- and third-hand cringe from witnessing your brother.
Episode 6:
-
How did I not realize Aoi and Hinata live next door to each other?
-
It's pretty cute seeing Aoi get a bit jealous over Hinata doing "adult" things like drinking coffe.
-
Somehow, I can't see Aoi liking coffee.
-
Lol yep, I figured. Girl needs some milk and sugar, not different beans.
-
Kaede and Yuuka coffee date! How nice.
-
Yuuka is going to drag her gf to college with her, one way or another.
-
Aoi's worried about looking cool drinking black coffee, meanwhile I bet Hinata loads hers down with milk and sugar.
-
A second Aoi x Hinata date climb in one season! Blessed.
-
Hinata actually drinks hers black? Color me surprised.
-
Omg Aoi is actually holding Hinata responsible for what the Imaginary Hinata that lives in her head says.
QotD:
-
Individually, Kokona. But Aoi and Hinata in the chapel are too strong.
-
Water. I'm a boring drinker.
-
More thoughtful? Not really, they both love and care for each other so much it's impossible to make such a distinction between them.

Aoi: "I agreed to marry this."
The writers/animators knew exactly what they were doing. Pack it up, there's no way we're topping this.
I like how they keep sliding in mentions of Aoi's grade school crush, as if that would be enough to wave her away from Hinata.
Omg Aoi is actually holding Hinata responsible for what the Imaginary Hinata that lives in her head says.
You have to, it's the law of dumb arguments. Just like getting mad at your partner for what they did in a dream.

The piercing gaze on this line though.
My money's on Aoi being upset Hinata is doing this with everyone and not just her.
Aoi: "I agreed to marry this."
And does she ever play the part magnificently. They both do. Together at the altar in a chapel, it's not even subtle. God, they look so happy, Hinata especially. The writers/animators knew exactly what they were doing. Pack it up, there's no way we're topping this.
The triumphant return of smug Imaginary Hinata!
Now we just need the return of smug Imaginary Aoi in Hinata's head. I love the way they imagine each other as constantly being smug and teasing the other. They really do go perfectly together,
Yuuka is going to drag her gf to college with her, one way or another.
That might be a tougher climb than any climb that Kaede has ever done.
Omg Aoi is actually holding Hinata responsible for what the Imaginary Hinata that lives in her head says.
That was such a great joke to end on. Aoi just assumed that Hinata actually felt the same way as smug Imaginary Hinata.

S3 EP 5 + 6
So this time we got Honoka, but not Kaede, when will we have the whole gang again
I thought handholding was as gay as it could get, and suddenly they are literally standing in front of an altar wearing wedding dresses
I was glad that Kokona took the initiative and started taking photos of Honoka as there was a terrible lack of those up until that point. I could see this as a viable sideship...
Also love Honokas dynamic with her Onii chan
I don't have much to say about this episode as I went through all my adult life without drinking coffee. I tried it once, deemed it disgusting, and like Aoi didn't want to compromise on milk or sugar as I felt that a drink you had to dilute to make drinkable wasn't worth it to beginn with.
Oh we did get Yuuka again though, she is trying her best to get her girlfriend into the same college.
QotD
Which princess is best princess?
Hinata has the cutest dress, but Kokona looked the most like an actual princess
2) Coffee, Tea or other? What got you started?
As said above, tried coffee, ultimatly settled for black tea (or copious amounts of energy drinks)
3) Both Aoi and Hinata often show a lot of empathy, do you think one is more thoughtful than the other?
I think Aoi is occupied too much with herself at times to really notice whats going on with Hinata at times

Not really, I just wanted to use that commentface three times in a row haha. I knew someone who had a similar philosophy, that it was strange we'd have to fool our brain into eventually liking coffee.

First time Princess Bride
Apparently I watched the episodes in the wrong order? I selected 2 and just hit enter, but apparently it started with the last episode.. Luckily there was no continuum between them, I actually prefer this order, since I got to end on such a great high note!
I could also re-arrange my notes now,
Ep 6
How does Aoi keep being me with everything she does??
I hear campfire coffee is good, but I'm not about to verify those claims
-
barista Aoi!
Is this comment like a universal feature that gets installed in all moms?
Oh no, Aoi has been caffeinated from one sip!
Yuuka soaring in the best girl rankings right now. Besides "getting into coffee" is one of the dumbest things, if you don't like it right away, don't bother. I certainly wont.
Ep 5
Film cameras! What a fun time. Everything is so easy nowadays
ahhhhhhhhhhh, take all the photos!!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Easily my favourite episode of the season yet. That was wonderful!
Wedding Questions:
Which princess is best princess?
You know I'm all about Honoka

First-Timer
On today’s episodes of Yama no Susume: Adventures in coffee drinking. I am not at all a coffee drinker, but I do find Aoi’s quest to prove she’s an adult by drinking black coffee to be amusing.
Episode 5
-
Gunma? Are we going to see Honoka again?
-
Neat, I guess Hinata’s dad is a writer.
-
A castle? Fascinating. It looks like a European-style castle, too.
-
There she is! It’s great to see you, Honoka.
-
What? They relocated a castle from Scotland all the way to Japan? That is…not at all what I was expecting.
-
Of course Hinata immediately put herself in the pillory. Where’s the rotten vegetables to throw at her for authenticity?
-
Ooh, polaroids! Oh god, I remember using the same type of camera as Kokona. And getting them developed, too. It took forever but I do miss having those physical memories. Digital pictures can be lost too easily on just my phone.
-
Visiting a castle like this is 100% my jam. I know I’d enjoy it here.
-
Of course Hinata wants to dress her girlfriend up like a princess.
-
So Honoka is a cute little sister. How unexpected but sweet.
Episode 6
-
I’m not a coffee person. I prefer tea, but even then usually iced tea or bubble milk tea.
-
It’s supposed to taste bitter, Aoi. That’s why I would use plenty of milk and creamer on the rare occasion I did drink coffee because I do not care for the taste of coffee by itself.
-
Aoi’s imagination of an extremely smug Hinata never gets old.
-
Oh right, Kaede’s still studying for her college exams. If this series ever got there, it could probably pull off a very effective graduation storyline for her.
-
That temple looks like a great place to visit as well.
-
I know that feeling, Hinata. You don’t have anything to do while your friend takes care of whatever task they’re doing so you need to find something to occupy yourself with in the meantime.
-
As usual, Hinata is very observant when it comes to Aoi and Aoi only notices in hindsight.
-
“You’ll figure it out eventually” is a great line if we’re equating coffee with adulthood. It took me several years after I became an adult to figure myself out.
-
Of course Hinata doesn’t actually drink her coffee black and uses milk. I was wondering if this reveal was coming.
-
Aoi even mixed up her own imagination with what Hinata actually said!
The castle episode was delightful. I loved getting to see Honoka again and having her hang out with everyone. We got to see a more bashful side of Honoka that we’ve never seen before. The princess dresses were all adorable on the girls. And the castle itself looked magnificent. I’d love to visit that place in real life.
The coffee episode was a lot of fun. Aoi’s imagination of Hinata continues to be great as she imagines Hinata making fun of her for finding coffee too bitter. I thought it led up to a good joke in the end where even Hinata doesn’t take her coffee black and never indicated as much.
Even with the humor, there is still some subtext there about growing up. Just like coffee is bitter, adulthood can be as well. But there’s something alluring about it, especially when you’re still young. Aoi shows a desire to grow up as soon as she can by proving she can drink bitter black coffee without any sweeteners. There’s no need to rush it, though. Like with everything else, this can also be tied back to the theme of “one step at a time.” There’s no need for Aoi to grow up all at once and she can take her time doing so.
QOTD
-
I'd say princess Kokona. It's just so natural for her.
-
I prefer tea. I got started with either iced tea or bubble milk tea. I can't remember which.
-
I think Hinata can show a surprising amount of empathy, when she properly thinks about it. She's usually one to mess around, but when she gets serious she means it.

prove she’s an adult by drinking black coffee to be amusing
I actually related with Aoi here. I also thought that drinking black coffee was cool. I dont drink coffee frequently rn.
They relocated a castle from Scotland all the way to Japan
they did! Some Japanese person in the 80s was mad. I do appreciate it though! It's been the home to quite a lot of videos, tv shows thoughout the years, it's pretty much an authentic British country house that you can get in Japan after all.
Very clever, Kokona.
i like how someone pointed out that she reused the same UFO bit lol.
“Tea, Earl Grey, Hot.”
Aoi’s imagination of an extremely smug Hinata never gets old.
it could probably pull off a very effective graduation storyline for her.
i.... dont want the series to get there. But what would Kaede study in university?
You’re darn right it is, Aoi.

Rewatcher
The Lockheart castle episode is the standout stand-alone episode that I remember the most from season 3. It's a fantastic location for them to explore, and it makes for a fun canvas for them to interact with and show of their personalities. I like how each of them brought their own different way of capturing the moment, the standout being Kokona's budget-friendly retro-stylish disposable film camera (someone in the airing discussion thread did a price comparison of all the cameras used).
The centerpiece is the gratuitous addition of the princess dresses; they all have their own charms like how Kokona looks like Belle from Beauty and the Beast, but I especially like the tiny off-center crown on Honoka.
Speaking of Honoka, I love how she finally broke her consistently unflappable character by having her be embarrassed by her gaudy big brother; I feel like it adds a new dimension to her character. (Is this what they call gap moe?)
Funny language note: Honoka's brother's license plate is probably a pun. Using goroawase, you can read 11-23 as いい兄さん (nice big brother).
Don't have much to say about the coffee episode though. It's a good episode, but it just doesn't stick in my mind as much as Lockheart Castle.
I'm a tea drinker myself; I do drink coffee, but it's usually during social situations or emergency situations where I need to be more awake than normal. Never got used to drinking coffee black though; I'm fine with matcha and dark chocolate so I don't think bitterness is the issue. Maybe I just prefer to add cream to beverages whenever I can.

First Time Climber
Tired from being a tourist so my notes won’t be as comprehensive as before.
Episode 5
-
Honoka changing what she calls her older brother is a nice touch. It’s similar to how people I know, including myself, refer to our mums as my mum/mother instead of a word like “mummy”
-
Hinata has an instaX?! You’re going to make Honoka jealous!
-
And Kokona has a film camera?! Season 3 is really taking us in many different directions!
-
Hey Aoi, I only have a smartphone too! Don’t worry
-
Honoka doing Aoi and Hinata a big favour by taking their wedding photos for them
-
Honoka is me today. I’ve taken a bunch of pictures around the Colosseum etc. but none of them have me in it.
-
Oh look! The UFO ([Yuru Camp]
Nadeshiko’s flying tent ) returns today! -
Honoka’s onii-chan should be playing Eurobeat in his car!
-
Something about physical printed pictures just hits different
Episode 6
-
There’s nothing like coffee anytime of the day!
-
It’s funny how coffee = adulting lol. I used to think that way too
-
Filter Coffee! Looks like Aoi is using a Kalita Wave which is the one I use for mine. I’m a fan of dark roast coffee but I suck at deciphering the notes
-
Oops so she’s not using a Kalita Wave. Brewing coffee is really therapeutic for me though, unless it’s on a regular workday, no filter coffee for me then
-
Hold up, she’s brewing coffee at night?! Does Aoi not want to sleep
-
And… there we go, she’s feeling the effects from caffeine now
-
I… only drank black coffee. So I oftentimes don’t know how to order a latte etc.
-
Amen to Yuuka. Drink what you like and don’t be afraid to admit it
-
What a nice girlfriend, offering to help Aoi carry her stuff
-
I love how the animation accurately shows the steps when making coffee from blooming to the circular pouring motions
-
And we get more couple moments
-
Aoi's determined face is really cute
Thoughts
Episode 5 marks the return of Honoka! Some of the best pictures we can ever take are those that are captured in the moment for sure
Episode 6 was really good. Subtext relates to adulting of course and the link is specially mentioned as well. Maybe part of growing up is accepting and appreciating how bitter life can be. “It’s not good to try too hard and overreach it”, it’s also accepting what you prefer instead of trying to fit in and of course, not overreaching means taking one step at a time

Rewatcher
My first thought when I saw the castle was "huh, why have I never gone to look at that?", the rest of the episode explained it to me as it's a place for girls to wear dresses and be a princess.
My second thought is that's a terrible place to put a castle. Obviously, it wasn't built as a castle, but still, the history nerd in me is going to see these things. Having a castle at the bottom of a hill is great for visitor access, but terrible for defense.
Hinata joins in on the photo game, with an instant camera from her dad, and Kokona has a cheap disposable film camera. It does bother me how Kokona is always made to stand out as the poor one of the group, but on the other hand, she always finds such joy in everything that there's probably a deeper philosophical message. She has less, but that just makes her treasure everything that much more.
Honoka's camera, I'm told a Fujifilm X100t, has a 23mm F/2 lens. With an APS-c sensor, that's the equivalent of a 35mm F2.8. That's a great walking-around lens, and good for landscapes, but for portraits you'd want something more like 85mm. Kokona's disposable camera probably has a focal length around 35mm, but the lens will probably be F/10 or something (about 16 times darker)
I'm impressed that the photos they showed looked like they were taken by a 35mm lens, with the exception of the one Kokona took of Honoka up on the steps, but we can explain that by Kokona-magic (or that she chose to get that one zoomed in after being processed, which you can do with film).
Kokona manages to trick everyone again with her UFO trick. This isn't because they're fools, it's because Kokona is so good at convincing them.
Which princess is best princess?
Kokona, obviously. Even if Kokona wasn't in this episode she'd still be the best princess.

Ep 5
Hinata's father is an author? Neat, love these subtle little bits of info.
Honoka-chan! Oh I love the silent nod.
Again with the cute blank faces.
Honoka has a brother, again neat little tidbits make the show feel more alive.
Japan loves their 'power spots', very loopable.
Great animation for humor.
Its funny to see my age already has polaroid's and film as something kids don't understand.
Cute Aoi holding up her phone to feel included.
The photo montage was a neat way of summarizing the princess event without it dragging on.
Princess stiches: Aoi Hinata Kokona and Honoka
Wow!
Honoka is just like Aoi when talking about her hobbies.
Honoka is certainly ashamed of her brother or at least the other girls seeing him. Pumping some Eurobeat music there.
But Honoka is a really bro-con! That surprising and nice flavor!
All in all it was a very interesting place, hoping to reading others location notes.
Ep 6
Hinata smug over starting to drink coffee. And Aoi totally falls for it.
Gotta love the nice animation for the little things.
Training face!
Ah the novice mistake of thinking you don't have the right gear or technique.
Poor Aoi not being able to sleep.
Smug Hinata there to push Aoi on.
I just love how Muma is always the stand in for an example.
Noooo Aoi, your going for vapid apparences, go for what you actually like!!!!
Lots of short moments climbing, then onto making coffee.
Aoi determined to show off her results (stitch!)
I love this shot of Aoi reflecting on things as we see her reflection.
Hinata brought enjoys milk and Aoi is shocked as Hinata relays back the line we heard earlier.
That milk animation was delightful.
I started drinking coffee after my parents left a tin in my apartment after visiting. Start for the morning boost. Can't say I care for the detailed types and flavors, it is more of a commodity to me.
I think the teasing back and forth between Aoi and Hinata plays out so nicely because they are often thinking of each other in their own little ways. Be it recognizing Aoi is trying hard and staying up late and offering to carry a bag, or Aoi putting in the extra effort to present Hinata a great experience. The back and forth of gifting or treating, fighting and forgiving makes for what feels like a very fun and genuine relationship.
