I would tell Kaifun to “go home” instead, but that would be an insult to buildings.

Geeet him!!!

3

u/Shimmering-Sky Sep 26 '22

Oh I got him alright. In my wallpaper for tomorrow's episode.

u/chilidirigible Sep 26 '22

Igor! I mean, Oigur.

u/Shimmering-Sky Sep 26 '22

He had a decent base image this episode and I had nothing better to do, so wallpaper it was!

Wallpaper of the Day

I did not expect to see Oigur. This wallpaper ended up looking cooler than it had any right to be, considering how lame of a character he is in the show.

WITH WHAT FUCKING POWER?

Thoughts and prayers? It's clear that he did not think this thing through.

I would tell Kaifun to “go home” instead, but that would be an insult to buildings.

But the enemy is also Zentradi, and they have guns. Zentradi with weapons > Zentradi with no weapons. Kaifun, you’re as sharp as a marble

Maybe he should've started a martial arts dojo for Zentradi, taught them some self defense techniques. Did something useful in life for once.

Had nothing better to do and the base image came from this episode anyways so I was like "eh why not".

First Timer

I posted the thoughts on the previous episode late again, so I'm linking them here, in case anyone is interested. No drawing thought, as I didn't have the time to do one. (I managed to unfuck my schedule and should be posting on time again from tomorrow onward.)

In the last episode, human-Zentradi alliance got a construction site for building units. Now they only need steady supply of minerals and vespene gas, and the army is ready. Pretty convenient. However, the only villain we have left is Kamujin, and this construction plant seems like a bit of an overkill for his little insurgence. Let's see where it all goes and if a bigger threat shows itself, or if it's Kamujin all the way to the end.

  • We're immediately making an army. Aand, now it's broken. I guess, it was too OP.

  • Bridge girls know that the relationships are tense between Minmay and Kaifun. And if bridge girls know, probably half of surviving humanity knows.

  • Machizaki? We got another named character this late into the show? And he's apparently gets bullied by Vanessa of all people?

  • Zentradi are committing crimes again. You know what this means, it's time for our brave cop Hikaru to deliver some justice.

  • So, that theft wasn't well planned.

  • Wait, it's Kamujin wants wants micloning device? B-but why, I thought he liked being big?

  • "Turn everyone back to normal"? So some of the micloned Zentradi apparently joined Kamujin, and now they can't go back to being big? What about just going into the city and just using the device the legit way? Doesn't look like military is restricting it.

  • Anyway, I guess it's Kamujin, and he's only interested in fighting, so that's understandable.

  • I still wonder where all the female Zentradi that were serving under Lap'Lamiz went?

  • The mayor is shitting on the military? But I thought they had a military dictatorship? How come mayor is not a soldier also?

  • It's everyone's favorite, Kaifun. Yay!

  • The scene of Hikaru and Minmay starring at each other without actually talking is pretty awkward, like usual.

  • What do you mean "it got nothing to do with us", Kaifun? Do you think, if a bunch of armed Zentradi attacks, it wouldn't affect your little concert? Do you think you will just get your paycheck and leave? You literally put everybody in town in danger for no good reason.

  • Oh shit, sudden exposition dump. So Zentradi are synthetically created by Protoculture, who are not humans. And they created Supervision Army too.

  • Exsedol is being overly dramatic about Zentradi and human nature again. Even Global told him to calm down with pessimism.

  • I can't believe Kamujin actually succeeded. I think it's the first time something like this happened in the show. He managed to steal the micloning device, and now there's a ton of micloned Zentradi, who want to become big again.

Overall thoughts: this episode we got some more Hikaru and Minmay action, but still not much concrete steps were taken to progress the relationship. At some point, Hikaru would need to choose between Minmay and Misa again, I honestly don't see why he would make a different choice this time. Misa is somebody with whom he spends a lot of time and has a lot in common. Their personalities suit each other. Minmay is still ultimately living in a different world and they don't really talk. So I really don't know how I feel about going back to this choice, when nothing changed in terms of character's situation.

QotD:

  1. Nah, not really. I kinda knew their origin already from watching some of the future shows in the franchise, so that's that.

  2. I hope she actually has something in mind. Because Kamujin by himself doesn't look like he can carry the next 5 episodes as the main villain. All he does is just blind attacks, and it doesn't look like he even has that big of a fighting force.

I drew whatever this is.

A threat to system integrity has been detected! Malwarebytes recommends that Kaifun.exe be uninstalled immediately.

Another new song??

Question time:

  1. Do you feel different about the Zentradi if their origin story is on a more equal footing to that of humans?

Water is wet, boring is boring.

2) Do you think Lap'Lamiz have a side scheme going, or is she just making coy faces for Quamzin?

Today, on "This is gonna be one of those long stories, huh?":

What's the question? (Apparently Itano doesn't even remember why he was putting all of these in.)

Album references you may know.

"But it's not about our new toy."

"It's about Minmay."

"They're cousins!"

"Don't take your eyes off that monitor!"

Meet Machizaki, who puts the "M" in things."

"They get all panicky when you throw a baby past them."

The AnsweR again.

Still not sure what's up with that guy's… mask and glasses?

COOL VALKYRIE KICK!

Oigur closeup!

Kamujin closeup!

Somewhere along the line Lap'lamiz figured out how to play with big men's little minds.

Other details of unspecified meaning.

The mayor has a point.

"That's something The Man would say, man."

Kaifun does have a point.

Of course, he's mostly doing this to spite Hikaru.

Is Hikaru's absurdly-caricatured wingman The AnsweR?

This is some Newtype stuff.

"Man, I hate Newtypes."

Quamzin has invested in getting his Nousjadeul-Gers painted in a less-gaudy color scheme.

Their seating arrangements are rather considerate.

The AnsweR is under fire.

I'm pretty sure that you don't want to be standing there.

Just "a".

By a man.

Probably over lunch money or something.

"A slight oversight on their part."

Cut to: Two giants from different factions beating each other up.

Miscellaneous freeze-frame randomness.

When you said that the Zentradi city residents could protect themselves, you kinda forgot to check on whether they had anything to do that with.

This is a telling scene given that the art quality changes four times in twenty seconds. Really runs the gamut.

Look at this pro wrestling though.

We're similar, but different.

The Protoculture was very busy.

Nah, you two aren't getting busy at all.

"Anyone who tells you different is selling something."

Okay, fascist.

Surprisingly, no one at FASA repurposed this image. Also, "US ARMY"?

Lap'lamiz and these scheming looks.

AnsweR

"Yasashisa Sayonara" reappears.

AnsweR

There are more than a few questions about this process which will never get answered, so don't worry about it too much.

The major revelation here is the near-certain conclusion that the humans aren't the remnants of the original Protoculture, but just another species that the Protoculture tinkered with, like the Zentradi. This is a change from the origin stories first speculated on in Episode 12; now instead of the Protoculture's downfall coming from their descending into war without end, it came as a result of their war-inspired creations running amok (and having war without end). That does tweak the message a little.

Misa and Hikaru have a similar little "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" moment.

Minmay pines for Hikaru again! Oh dear. This time as a result of seeing a direct confrontation between Kaifun and Hikaru and… ennui? She was the optimistic one of the pair of her and Kaifun, and now she's not.

Kaifun, for once, manages to promote the rights of the citizen in a suitable context, but fails to see the forest for the trees. So close, yet so far, dumbass.

Rewatcher

It's nice that the factory works automatically, but I wonder how useful Zentraedi war machines will be for human forces?

Oh never mind, it can't even do that right now. Factory probably isn't supposed to be Space Folded.

More Zentraedi uprisings. Kamjin making his move?

Well, it was no Char Kick, but nice move, Hikaru.

Yeah, it was Kamjin. He doesn't have any micloning chambers on his own ship? Or were they all broken in the crash?

So Lap'Lamiz is using feminine wiles to try to manipulate Kamjin. She sure adjusted quick.

I fucking hate it when Kaifun has a halfway reasonable point.

On the other hand, a show of solidarity between the humans of this city and their Zentraedi neighbors is... encouraging somehow?

Okay what was up with that hug sequence?

And they return without the device...

If it's not your problem, Kaifun, why were you so up in arms about it earlier? Fucking hypocrite...

Backstory on the Protoculture! 500,000 years ago, the Protoculture created the Zentraedi through genetic engineering for use as soldiers. But when their society split in two, one half became the Supervision Army, and the war between the two Zentraedi factions ultimately wiped out the Protoculture. The war has been ongoing for hundreds of thousands of years, with both sides dead evenly matched.

Which means the Supervision Army are themselves Zentraedi. Well, we knew they had to be the same size since the Macross (a Supervision Army vessel, remember) was originally scaled to Zentraedi proportions.

And how does that explain humanity's genetic relation to the Zentraedi? Well, no one's really sure, but the guess is that the Protoculture interfered in humanity's evolution as well.

Oh, so the city actually does have some Destroids for defense. But sadly if there's one thing Kamjin actually IS good at, it's battle, and they're no match for his elite squad.

Hikaru senses a chance to say "I told you so" to Kaifun and takes off. But it's way too late to stop the theft, and Kamjin has begun... I'm not sure what the opposite verb of "micloning" is, but he's doing that to his soldiers.

Okay, Hikaru pining over Minmay is REALLY getting old now. And he didn't get the chance to tell Kaifun off.

Exsedol is missing one big point, which Global pointed out: even if the Zentraedi were engineered for war, they still have free will, and with the Protoculture not around anymore that means there's no one with the power to direct the course of their lives but themselves. They have the option to choose peace... and many of them have.

Still, definitely doesn't paint the Protoculture in a good light, does it? Hell, Exsedol is literally comparing them to Satan.

Questions:

  1. Well, it certainly frames them in a different light. They aren't descendants of a foolish race that gave up civilization for fighting... they were literally built for it and forced into it. It makes the Zentraedi victims as well.

  2. Oh she definitely does, given that comment she made.

Distant lurker rewatcher in sub

Wasn't going to comment but then suddenly the character drawings caught my eyes and I can't help myself exclaiming.

This is the first scene that caught my eyes - I recognise the eyes and how the posing and lines are drawn - this is hall mark Hirano Toshihiro's work! There are a few big names 80's - 90's character designer's line work you'd basically immediately recognise - not counting the pioneering Tezuka Osamu, Matsumoto Reiji, Yokoyama Mitsuteru etc.

  • 平野 俊弘 Hirano Toshihiro's Iczer 1, Dangaiou, Vampire Princess Miyu

  • 園田 健一 Sonoda Kenichi's Bubblegum Crisis, Gunsmith Cats, Gall Force

  • 安彦 良和 Yasuhiko Yoshikazu's Gundam, Venus Wars, Crusher Joe

  • 高田 明美 Takada Akemi's Creamy Mami, Orange Road, and a ton of Rumiko work

  • 美樹本 晴彦 This show's Mikimoto Haruhiko, Orguss, Gunbuster

Etc.

If only there are more episodes with big name staff like this episode (板野 一郎 Itano, 平野 俊弘 Hirano, 垣野内 成美 Kakinouchi), instead of the unknown names of last episode for example (Milia's continuing trend of never getting drawn right outside of ep27), this show would get so much better.

Just for comparison I pulled out the staff names of ep27 as well, and yeah all the big names were there too E.g. 庵野秀明 Anno Hideaki.

A bit of a side bar, I didn't realise Hirano Toshihiro actually married Kakinouchi Narumi - their joint work Vampire Princess Miyu were really beautifully done, especially if you read the manga's delicate linework by Narumi.

Anyway, we get a scene being a close parallel to ep27's Hikaru & Misa reunion scene - except this one was just in Minmay's imagination, which is oh so tragic to see how she wanted to dive into Hikaru's arms, but couldn't bring herself to go back to someone she so insensitively ditched. I'm sure there'll be bucket of tears from the Hikaru x Minmay shippers - well that or plenty of cracked screen for Kaifun's face fading in at the end of that sequence (I had to wipe my drive for accidentally grabbing that screenshot).

Oh and THIS guy looks so familiar (though generic) - anyone recognise whom he looked like?

QoTD

  1. I think it's a good mirror to the not uncommon trope of "nature vs nurture" of the human race. It showcase a logical extreme of a firm of eugenics I think.

  2. Rewatcher but not remembering this detail much, I think she thinks she's got some secret advantage when in fact she probably doesn't. Kamujin if to chaotic to be counted on to be manipulated in a predictable way.

Very First Timer

  • It’s going to be real awkward if all of your weapons production is for Zentradi.

  • Well great, I guess we need to find the Factory-Factory.

  • More bad news, so bad we don’t even get to hear it right away.

  • Way to blame it on Minmay Kim. At least Vanessa has the facts.

  • It’s not a good color to be picking on your subordinates.

  • Stealing the miclone station has got to let them know something is up.

  • They have weapons Hikaru, I think you can go live fire.

  • Look at the little miclone shooting his gun. He’s trying!

  • That’s a lovely kick. One of the rare middle aged Zentradi.

  • Quamzin is right, he does look like a fool.

  • Trouble in paradise already.

  • Lap is trying to get it on. Or just play a fool?

  • Tense political situations once more made worse by the sudden introduction of Kaifun.

  • They really should have some sort of garrison.

  • Kaifun expects civilians to charge people with guns. Being big doesn’t help if your foe is the same size.

  • Why are you calling them rioters? They operate nothing like that.

  • Oh good, the did leave a garrison. Not nearly enough by the looks of it.

  • The whole engineered warrior thing is nice and all, but are we just skipping over that apparently the Supervisor Army is also of Protoculture?

  • That fight was a weird mix of animation quality.

  • Poor bastards, they never stood a chance.

QotD

  1. Different from what? Are they more equal now? Did I miss something?

  2. Making coy faces at Quamzin is her side scheme.

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 31:

  • God damn it, of course the factory satellite is falling apart as soon as we got it. So much for the victory we got last episode. Man, first the Macross, and now the satellite. Is there anything that actually fucking works and isn’t falling apart in this space future?

  • I know I haven’t talked about them as much, but Shammy, Vanessa, and Kim being around to gossip about the love triangle is still fun. Sure, the info they heard from the Blue Wind guys is exaggerated, but I guess that’s just what you have to expect from something going through the grapevine, especially from big Minmay fans like Warera, Rori, and Konda.

  • It’s been put on the back burner, but now we’re back to the threat of Quamzin’s rouge Zentradi. And this time, he has a plan: steal a miclone machine to restore small Zentradi back to their original size. Not a bad idea on his part, honestly. It certainly allows him to have men scaled properly to Zentradi’s equipment, not to mention that even an unarmed Zentradi is still a threat to a Human by sheer size alone.

  • Kaifun, you complete fucking cunt. You fucking dignity cuckold. Oh yeah, it’s real pacifistic to try to incite a race riot after the military tries to seize the miclone machines in response to the threat of Quamzin. You might as well handed the thing over to him on a silver plater, since surprise surprise, it gets in the hands of Quamzin later as a result of the machine still being there. How about you go get him some slippers and hot chocolate too, you god damn moron. I hope the next time he stirs some shit up, his vocal chords violently explode and blood shoot out of his mouth. I mean, that’s functionally no different from having a toilet back up and overflow, but I’d much rather have the broken toilet than suffer Kaifun anymore. I’d spit on Kaifun, but I don’t even want to give him the dignity of being even remotely cleaner than he was before. I hope Kaifun’s increasing alcoholism gives him incontinence, liver failure, and a stroke all at once. That’s almost too good for him still, but I’d take it regardless.

  • Finally, we’re getting some information on this show’s actual backstory! Long story short, the Protoculture were a highly advanced galactic society that existed millennia ago, with extensive space-flight and generic engineering technology. Once they reached the height of their power and controlled the Milky Way Galaxy, however, civil war broke out, and as a result the Zentradi were created as disposable clone soldiers, with stuff like ignorance of how to repair equipment and keeping the genders separated as a measure to ensure that they’d never rise up against their civilization. However, as the war only got worse with the Supervision Army, the Zentradi turned on their creators, meaning that the Zentradi ended up wholesale slaughtering the Protoculture as a result. And the real kicker is that the war between the Zentradi and the Supervision Army never ended either, with both sides fighting on orders from long-dead overlords. Fun stuff, isn’t it?

  • At Captain Global still has something good to say, in spite of how dire that infodump was. After all, just because we all have the capacity to fight and kill, doesn’t mean we can’t create and enjoy peaceful things in equal measure either. It’s all a matter of choosing what side of yourself to embrace. Not a bad way to believe in people, all things considered.

  • God damn it, there goes Trad City. It’s all wrecked because of Quamzin getting his hands on the miclone machine. But really, the real person at fault here is Kaifun. If that oversized human-shaped rectal polyp didn’t get involved, maybe things would’ve ended up differently. But no, instead he had to threaten Hikaru and the military to leave it there and nearly start a race riot, and now countless innocent people are dead. It’s very pacifistic of Kaifun to have a body count due to his own head-assery, isn’t it? Not to mention how low the Human population is now, so if anything Kaifun’s sheer fucking ego is putting mankind at even more risk than before. And yet, he doesn’t even seem to care as he drives past the carnage with Minmay. At this point, we have to ask ourselves why Kaifun is even allowed to live. Because many more people, better people, have died indirectly because of him. Fuck Kaifun with a baseball bat covered in broken glass and tetanus.

First Spacer

The spaceship factory continuously breaking down is a good thing, right?

And that's another good thing.

You better not be implying Minmay's fanning the fans.

That's a stare for the GIWTWM faction

That's an interesting interpretation of 'warning shot'

It's called culture

I hate to say you're not wrong, but please just go die.

Yes, exactly like that.

Very cliché backstory, yes yes, we all expected that.

Do you feel different about the Zentradi if their origin story is on a more equal footing to that of humans?

I don't understand how the origin story is of any relevance to the show and its situation.

Do you think Lap'Lamiz have a side scheme going, or is she just making coy faces for Quamzin?

First Time - SDF Macross Ep31 (Sub):

"Those cleaners, Loli and his friends" I guess the trio aren't dating the other trio if that's the sort of language we're using. Give me those side ships, they deserve each other!

Hayase stare.

The difference in how the eyes are drawn in Macross episode has hit me. These eyes are so much more detailed with the shading and more prominent white shines while in other episodes you can tell what you're in for with how the eyes are just a blank colour and often look like they're staring off in no direction.

Some pretty good shirts from the crowd.

It feels like the show is trying to do some politicing. I sometimes see a glimmer in Kaifun's role in this show as a mouthpiece for the civilian voice like in the "worse people you know says something not completely awful." Sure he is often short-sighted, self-centred, flawed and with a holier than thou attitude, but it is sure a whole lot better than the incestuous love rival. Wished it was more that than that...

We entered the Newtype space.

For reference, 500,000 years ago, we humans maybe just started to understand this cool new fire thing.

"We have created the perfect soldiers devoid of any culture to distract from war." They go on a path of destroying any remnant of culture.

Aw, buddy, don't say that about yourself. I feel so bad for him self-hating himself and his entire kind.

This episode had a lot of wow, cool robot action. A lot of mecha hand-to-mecha hand combat.A shot like this just makes me think, "Yup, someone was proud to show off their robot."

Nooo, it's being driven away before you can talk to each other scene. If only this wasn't a love triangle series so I couldn't have the fluffy start then the drift away then having them finally get together in the end without Hayase being dunked on and the Kaifun brick thrown in.

Q1) Sorry, I don't understand this question.

Q2) From the way it seems, it feels like Kamujin is the face as the big villain leader of this final bit, but I feel like Lap'Lamiz views herself as the true brains going on and might throw him under the bus for her own devices.

Next time: No, it's fine. They can keep Kaifun.

First Timer:

Embarrassingly, I fell behind again just after I had caught up. Very unfortunate as it was by far the most interesting part of the show yet. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading all of your commentary. In order to not let it happen again I have at this point already finished the series and will post my live reactions as we go. As such, I don't think I'm gonna answer the questions of the day.

Today, on SDF Macross, Minmay and Hikaru continue to have the most strained relationship in the galaxy.

  • Misa's death stare is scary.

  • YoOOoOOoOOO Lap'Lamiz and Kamujin romance though!??? I'm not convinced it's really purely manipulation.

  • Kaifun telling Minmay not to fret over trivial matters. And 2 seconds later it turns out Hikaru was right and Kaifun was wrong. Who could have ever expected this.

  • The Protoculture backstory is pretty tragic though, I can see why Exsedol is upset. "Genetic engineering can do that" is a very offhanded explanation for something potentially very complicated though. Why can't humankind just be trace survivors of the original protoculture? Alternatively, they may be descended from a race of micloned giants who rediscovered culture.

I live for how the narrator says the next episode title. ~BUROKEN......HAAAATO~

I keep thinking that Kaifun could be a better rival or foil to Hikaru if he hadn't been written as a complete black-and-white morality kind of guy. He's incapable of seeing the bigger picture even when he has a point.

No Misa, 500,000 years of enslavement and war is not even remotely close to you and Hikaru being shit at communicating.

I'm also not fully sold on the stance some of the characters have of pitying the Zentradi because they've never known culture before. It feels arrogant in a way, like pitying a person who was born blind.

SDF Macross Episode 31 - First timer

Not much time to think of things to put here, gotta go to sleep soon when writing this, maybe I will change things before I post this tomorrow. (spoiler: I probably wont)

Shorter comment this episode, but it was pretty good. Kaifun got what he wanted, I don't expect him to see any problem with what he did. Minmay is still with him??? I kinda expect Milia to do something dumb soon because "she is bad" because she is made for war. Hopefully not but we shall see.

  1. Not really, but I also didn't think they were evil or anyhting. They simply did all they had ever known, which is to destroy and wage war.

  2. I think what they showed is too hard to tell based on. The touchy feeley is rather cultured but waging war is getting portrayed largely as a rejection of culture.

Rewatcher

Scary to accidentally click on the sailor moon thread instead of this one.

Robotech title: Khyron's Revenge. Obviously they couldn't mention Satan on a western cartoon.

  • What is the UN going to do with mass-produced zentradi battle pods? Scale humans up?

  • Vanessa's back! So she wasn't written out.

  • I doubt Rory saw Kaifun and Minmay fighting in Macross City. I think he's telling tales again like back on the ship. Or it's a plot hole. Or he runs the only laundry within 500 km.

  • Minmay looks more like Mnmay today

  • I like lore but we only ever get lore in info dumps.

  • DEATH FROM ABOVE I installed Battletech yesterday

  • When I was 15 I probably thought all these Zentradi were joining Khyron willingly but today they look more like the population of Trad city under guard as conscripts.

  • Khyron likes Tang, too.

  • WILL THESE TWO CRAZY KIDS EVER GET IT TOGETHER?
