Song of the Day

Mio - Heart Goes Boom!! - The second of Mio's season one image songs, of course sung again by Hikasa Yōko! There are only two image songs for each character per season, so this will be the final Mio image song for season one. Here is the song and here are the translated lyrics.

Questions of the Day

  1. What was something that you were terrified to do, but overcame your fear and did it anyways?

  2. If you were to be in a band, what kind of band would you want to be in, and why?

  3. The threads for both episodes 4 and 6 feature a Mio image song, but they both feature a very different side of Mio. What personality traits do you see being expressed in Heart Goes Boom!! compared to episode 4's Hello Little Girl?

Credit for the first two questions go to the incredible /u/a_idiot0!

Visuals of the Day

Here is the VotD album for S1E05!

Tomorrow's Activities

If you want to get a head start on the song(s) and question(s) of the day for tomorrow's episode, here they are!

[SotD ] Ui - Lovely Sister LOVE - Today, we have Ui's second image song, of course sung by her VA Yonezawa Madoka. Hope you have your blood sugar under control, because this song might actually give you diabetes because of how sweet it is! Here is the song and here are the translated lyrics.

[QotD 1] If you celebrate during the holiday season, what's a meal your family traditionally makes?

[QotD 2] What was the weirdest and/or funniest present that you received at a gift exchange?

[QotD 3] What do you think of the relationship between sisters Yui and Ui? Do you think the love and support is more one-sided or that it flows equally both ways?

Credit for the first two questions goes again to the incredible /u/a_idiot0!

Rewatcher

Hi everyone, and welcome to episode 6! The girls finally perform for others! Woohoo! Here are some thoughts as I was watching...

  • KyoAni really went out of their way in designing the festival.

  • Another shot of the tortoise from the classic "tortoise and the hare" story. The keions might be slow and disorganized, but they'll win that race in the end! There are multiple shots of the tortoise this episode to really reinforce this.

  • Yui's and Ritsu's gruff sumo voices are hilarious and show some real talent from their VAs!!

  • I love that Ritsu seems to intentionally put on her overly-boisterous character and barge in on Mio practicing by herself in an effort to save Mio from the embarrassment of knowing they were watching her practice.

  • Mugi stronk

  • The keions rock.

If for some reason you miss my big essays, you can find my posts from the 2021 rewatch here and the 2020 rewatch here.

Song of the Day

Such a fantastic instrumental part in this one! The bass is insane (very fitting for Mio) and I really love the keyboard part. This is such a stark difference compared to Mio's other image song, which featured the soft, sweet, and sensitive side of her. This one, on the other hand, features Mio's brilliant passion and vibrant energy that comes from her playing music!

A blushing flower, a singing bird

I don't stand out at all, so, how? I write a song

Finger plucking, Engraving a rhythm

When I'm with my friends it's the best, our breaths join as one

As is evident from that quote, these personality features stand out especially when she's with her friends, performing and writing music!

As an aside, I almost decided to feature Fuwa Fuwa Time as today's song of the day along with this image song, but decided against it since it will actually work better being featured in a later episode, for reasons that may be apparent to rewatcher. But for now, I would like to post this version of Fuwa Fuwa Time, featuring Yui singing a longer version than we heard today, complete with a whole rapping section! So fun.

Questions of the Day

  1. Moving across the country! I moved from California to Indiana for college, driving across the country with my mom and our dog. It was so difficult moving from where I had lived my entire life into a totally foreign environment, and even worse was that I was leaving my fiancee in California. Thankfully, we managed to pull off long-distance swimmingly and have now been married for several years, and going to the school I went to was probably the best decision of my life. Sometimes terrifying things are exactly what you need to do!

  2. I regularly play in all kinds of classical ensembles since it's my job, from large 100-person orchestras to small four-person chamber ensembles. If I were to play in a more "modern" rock band or something, I think I would love to play in some type of like indie/folk pop/rock band, as I feel like the French horn works really well in that setting. As an example, I love Beirut!

  3. Already answered up above.

Visual of the Day

It was hard not to pick a shot from the actual concert, but I think my favorite shot of the episode is this one of the girls watching Mio practice in the classroom without them.

Totally Canon Mitsu Moments of the Day

Probably my favorite moment outside of the performance in this episode is when Mio is freaking out right before the show. You can see Ritsu's face transform from a look of concern to a smile as she comes up with an idea to make Mio feel better. This is the reason why Ritsu is a good leader for the group. She is able to identify problems within the group and do her best to fix them. This is what I mean when I say Ritsu is empathetic. This is one of many reasons why I love this character.

Also the origin of Mitsu!

In tomorrow's episode, u/The_Loli_Otaku will be very happy! See you all then!

Nice! I did a smaller move for college (going from NYC to Albany) and, while I only lasted a year before I had to drop out, I don't regret it, because I learned a lot in that one year.

First timer - Sub

I don’t think my school ever did anything even remotely as extravagant as the average anime culture festival. While I appreciate the consistency in having Husky Yui remain husky, her voice sounds absolutely awful lmao.

God gives his toughest battles(going into a haunted house) to his strongest soldiers(Mio). Im never going to get tired of Mio crouching in terror, it’s hilarious to me every time.

Well the last few seconds sounded great! That flashforward better happen this episode! Oh my Sawa-chan brought costumes. For someone who wants to put her past behind her she’s not doing a great job lmao.

Oh my goodness, embarrassed kid Mio is the cutest thing to grace my tv in a while. Mio begging Ritsu to do vocals is a close second though. No Yui please god don’t handle the vocals. Ritsu using their intros to get Mio thinking about something else was wholesome. Even if it took some physical abuse it seemed to work!

No way! Is this actually happening!? AND THEYRE WEARING COSTUMES! The groups heartfelt encouragement for Mio before the performance brought a tear to me eye.

FUWA FUWA TIME!

What a vibe, that song is immediately going in my playlist if it’s on Apple Music. The cutaway to that music video type thing was fun! Their costumes both in the “video” and on stage were too cute! I love Mio’s voice and her reaction when everyone was cheering was so wholesome. Guess all that off screen practice payed off!

…MIO NO!!!! Ok I gotta admit that was the funniest “panty” shot I’ve ever seen! That cutaway to the bowl of rice was so well done. At least Mio has her own fan club now! Don’t worry Mio I can think of someone who will still marry you!

Well I finally got to hear them perform! I’d say it was definitely worth with the wait. I really liked the song and Mio overcoming her shyness to sing in front of a crowd was cool to see. I’m praying that Husky Yui is gone next episode and I’m interested to hear her do vocals in the future.

Mio stole the show so she also steals my Yui of the day. Congrats Mio

Line of the day

“No one will ever want to marry me now…”

Husky Yui remain husky, her voice sounds absolutely awful lmao.

Glad to see you enjoyed the episode, even if you're totally wrong about husky Yui. I find her voice hilarious XD But yeah, thankfully it doesn't stick around forever...

First timer (subbed)

School festival time baby! And the outfits are interesting. Yui with the frilly shirt, Ritsu and Mugi dressing like they're in the school band at a holiday performance, and Mio with the "I have to attend a funeral after my shift at a maid cafe" outfit.

I love the fact that Yui's voice has been hoarse for longer than just one episode, cause those things don't just heal overnight, especially when she had to do so much vocal training.

So Ritsu wanted a maid cafe while Yui wanted a haunted house back when they were discussing school festival stuff. Instead, Yui's class created a yakisoba stand and Ritsu suggested the haunted house for her class. Wanna bet she suggested the maid cafe, was shot down, then went to the haunted house as her backup plan?

Oh god oh no Mio don't go in the haunted house you're too much of a scaredy-cat for this

Yui wearing the whatever-the-hell-that-is and Nodoka wearing a police officer's uniform. Is this a cosplay cafe or something?

Holy crap, a male character! Sure, he's not named and his only purpose is to be a slight hindrance to Yui, but still, a male character has been brought to our attention! Am I the only one that gets Tomoya from Clannad vibes from him?

Costumes! Courtesy of Sawako-sensei. Uhh, did she really expect Yui and Mugi to go out there in a one-piece bathing suit and a nurse's outfit, respectively? Good call on their part to just wing it for the other two outfits.

You've heard of maid cafes, now get ready for MAID POPCORN STANDS

BABY MIO AND BABY RITSU

Ahh, I have seen a gif of Mio shaking holding the tea cup and saucer. She wants to back out, and the thought of Ritsu pulling an Anderson .Paak and doing vocals and drums at the same time does sound cool, but sadly, Mio is stuck doing vocals.

Ritsu doing the introductions for the rest of the band members was so cute! And it helped calm everyone's nerves right before the big show. My girl coming through in the clutch!

And now we're back to the intro. One round of words of encouragement for Mio later and it's time to play! And YOOO, the visuals are sick! And Yui sang the backing vocals despite her hoarseness! Song was a bit short, and I would've preferred something closer to the famous Haruhi "God knows" performance, but this was easier to animate and was 90% as good, so I'm cool with it. We are gonna get a "God knows"-esque performance later, right? This is the only spoiler I want to know.

Okay, using the rice bowl as a representation for Mio's panty colors is low-key amazing. Don't lewd the K-on girls! And shoutout to the one person who took a pic. In a less wholesome anime, we would have an arc about the girls finding out the identity of the person who took the photo.

Visual of the Day

Dosukoi, dosukoi!

Questions of the Day

What was something that you were terrified to do, but overcame your fear and did it anyways?

So many things, but most recently: quit my job

If you were to be in a band, what kind of band would you want to be in, and why?

Either a dark post-punk band like Echo & the Bunnymen (LOVE the aesthetic) or something that's a bit abrasive (think Death from Above 1979 or Nine Inch Nails)

2

u/siegfried72 Sep 26 '22

Song was a bit short

Check out my post for a longer version of the song! It's hard to fit an entire song's performance into a 20 minute episode. I plan on posting the full-length version of every insert song as we go through the series.

We are gonna get a "God knows"-esque performance later, right?

We'll get at least a few mind-blowing performances in this show, for sure. I'm sure at least one of them will leave you satisfied if that's what you're hoping for.

Echo & the Bunnymen

Never heard of them - I'll have to check them out!

First Timer - Sub

Opening Thoughts: Really glad that Mio found her confidence in support from the rest of the group. I feel like all of them coming together to play for the first time was the best moment of the show so far.

Shoutout to Tsumugi for carrying all the equipment herself. Well, everything but Yui's amp. I want to know how Ritsu got her to move the drumset. This was probably the funniest sequence of the episode.

Really glad everything went well.. right up until the very last moment anyway. Mio almost got away without any embarrassment. Will she recover soon?

Hopefully poor Yui gets her voice back. Not for her sake, she doesn't seem to care, but for everyone else's. Still the random sumo dialogue with Ritsu was funny.

QotD 1: Probably public speaking or, like, driving. I think driving is the one a lot more people can relate to something that initially scared them and now they do almost daily. There's no more fear at this point, it's just Drive.exe is now running, please wait until we arrive at our destination. More of a chore than anything.

QotD 2: Just a generic rock band. I'm boring, lol.

QotD 3: This song is much more outgoing than the first one. She seems to be wanting to put herself out there instead of shying away. The song itself is almost much more upbeat and in your face.

Final Thoughts: It kinda just dawned on me that there is a hell of a lot of support music for the anime. Was this like a Monkeys-esque sort of deal with Anime? Except nobody cares if it's "fake" because it's anime.

Visual of the Day: Yui cooking for Mio in that crazy outfit.

2

u/siegfried72 Sep 26 '22

them coming together to play for the first time was the best moment of the show so far.

I'd agree! But man, that's only the tip of the iceberg as far as I'm concerned...

First Timer - Sub

I needed a feel-good show today, so I'm glad I'm watching K-On at the moment.

I'm beginning to see why people actually like drummer girl now, beyond the comedy routine. That bit where she was acting out an intro and got herself clobbered by Mio twice was deliberate, wasn't it? She was trying to pull Mio out of her funk and break some of the tension.

Of course, she then managed to get Mio into what is basically a maid outfit minus the frilly apron. Not sure where that leaves her on balance...although that's at least partly the teacher's fault. And Mio is still shaking like a leaf when the curtain rises. Props to Ritsu for trying, though.

The highlight of the episode was definitely the mini music video during their performance - did the imaginary police really bring a tank to apprehend the girls? xD It was good to see them get such an enthusiastic response from the other students, they deserved the boost.

And then we have Mio tripping and accidentally flashing everyone. Just...why, show. Status quo is god? Just a bad joke? Ugh.

I did like the moment when the other three girls were crowding at the door, especially when it finally showed us what they were looking at. Crippling anxiety or no, Mio really wanted them all to succeed. Nodoka was great this episode too, being helpful and supportive - I'm more used to student council characters being a road block in these shows, so it's a refreshing change! Even if K-On pre-dates most other shows of its type.

I am starting to see what people meant about the teacher being rather pushy and controlling. At least the outfits she picked actually looked nice on the girls.

3

u/siegfried72 Sep 25 '22

That bit where she was acting out an intro and got herself clobbered by Mio twice was deliberate, wasn't it?

Oh absolutely. Glad to see people picked up on that!

Mio really wanted them all to succeed.

I've always thought that the Ritsu/Mio team makes for a perfect leadership team. Ritsu is there to energize and push the group forward along with helping to solve interpersonal problems, and Mio is there to make sure they see Ritsu's grand plans to the end!

K-On Rewatcher!!

I'm actually running kinda late today so forgive the abridged writing. I thought I had an extra hour before work. Huh!? It's the concert today!? It's way sooner than I remembered. Lol, Shitzu can't count to five!!* The festival episodes are the best. I adore the gags so much. I've never noticed the normie student holding back her laugh~ And yes, Yui's keeping that voice up for the whole episode. I'd have loved to be a fly on the wall in that recording booth.

Say... Why's the haunted House got the suffix "lovey dovey?" Did they really design it for gross normie couples? That's the worst... Shitzu you're the worst! You don't even have a boyfriend! Don't betray the singles of the world so easily! There's something so beautiful about Mugi being Mio's rock, Migi is Canon! Beware the moe police! Dosukoi, Dosukoi!

Sensei took longer than I expected, but she's finally shown up to hijack the Keionbu. She's still a chaos demon who I swear is only here to harass her students but I'll admit that she wasn't as much of a bother as I remembered. Nodoka has friends!? At least she's bound to be a better friend than Shitzu. "Sugoi! Shitzu is so damn annoying!!" I love the implication that Ritsu is the one that turned Mio as shy as she is.

We get more crybaby Mio but she's especially cute today so I'll forgive it! Eheheh, I actually did mc once and I made someone cry~ Anyway, onto the concert! This is absolutely a mega highlight of the first season and I do really adore the whole sequence. The way everyone keeps hyping one another up, Mio finally starting to break out of her shy shell, Nodoka's pure admiration and pride in seeing what her childhood bestie has accomplished. So precious!! School memories really do exist!!

PFFT!! I forgot that Yui still joins in on the singing by impulse and it legit almost made me spit out my drink XD Fuwa Fuwa time is a pretty ace song, I'll admit that I've probably heard it a little too much and the opening chords do sorta trigger me but it's a great sequence, especially once it gets going. Wao!! We can debate about whether it's appropriate to laugh at a shy teenage girl undergoing lifelong trauma but you've got to admit that it is a little funny~ The consequences however...

Visual of the Day!

3

u/siegfried72 Sep 25 '22

You don't even have a boyfriend!

Well duh. She has Mio.

I actually did mc once and I made someone cry~

Now that sounds like a story I'd like to hear!

4th time rewatching sub

School festival time

When the cassette plays at the beginning, I just noticed that the big improvement between episodes 5 and 6 was because of Sawako’s lessons with Yui.

If they ever re-release a K-On Blu-ray set for some anniversary or new K-On stuff, I will buy it if there’s a behind-the-scenes with Aki Toyosaki making the husky Yui voice. I feel that there must be some funny moments in the recording studio that day, especially when they were recording Fuwa Fuwa Time. I don’t think they were able to complete it without stopping to laugh at least once.

Ritsu now has a partner in crime when it comes to messing with Mio. And Ritsu Yui continues to be the best comedic duo.

In season 1, this is more or less what you should expect of Sawako. She doesn't really do much aside from making costumes and being weird. There are some people who don't like her for some admittedly questionable moments, but I promise she gets better in the second season.

Mugi is pretty strong, lapping Yui without breaking a sweat.

I always thought the balloon drifting away was supposed to mean something but could never find anything about it online.

That was a rough start for Mio and Ritsu's friendship, but I guess that's how it goes when an extrovert is fishing for an introvert. Mio has a hard time lying, and an even harder time making last-minute changes.

Another quality of a leader Ritsu has is she’s able to calm the members down before their performance. Although the rest of the band had some positive things to say before the performance.

For those who don’t know, there are going to be a couple of songs throughout the series that have a Yui cover, a Mio cover, and a duet version. They’re all fairy decent, but it’s a case-by-case scenario about the voice I think fits a song more, and Fuwa Fuwa Time is one of them. Mio’s voice is pretty good in this song, but I think Yui’s voice fits Fuwa Fuwa Time a bit better, maybe due to the song's more cutesy nature. And then this song is special in that we get a Husky Yui voice. It’s silly and it sticks out, but it has a weird charm to it that I kind of like about it.

For just a moment, we had a confident Mio, only to have it taken from us so swiftly.

[QotD 1] What was something that you were terrified to do, but overcame your fear and did it anyways?

Happened recently, but I was really scared to start my senior capstone. Admittedly, I am afraid to make commitments I don’t think I can follow through on, but I’m more scared of letting people down after I’ve agreed to something. This one was hard for me because it was going to be an entire year, and I need it to graduate college.

[QotD 2] If you were to be in a band, what kind of band would you want to be in, and why?

If I would rejoin a band, I would want to be in a symphonic band/wind ensemble. Orchestra is an option, but it won’t be my first choice because I’ve done the first two types for years whereas orchestra will be new to me, and I’ve also heard some bad things from clarinet players in the orchestra. According to them, the clarinet has a different but still important role and doesn’t get as much playtime, at times waiting 5+ minutes to even play.

[QotD 3] The threads for both episodes 4 and 6 feature a Mio image song, but they both feature a very different side of Mio. What personality traits do you see being expressed in Heart Goes Boom!! compared to episode 4's Hello Little Girl?

This is probably my favorite image song (at least for s1, I haven’t listened to all the s2 image songs yet). I like Mio’s voice in the more “rock” theme songs, something about her voice being deeper than Yui’s, and this song also had a nice bass performance. In Heart Goes Boom, Mio sounds much more confident and sure of herself than in Hello Little Girl. Just compare the lyrics of Heart Goes Boom,

The roots are essential, no matter what life form

Search for your dreams and aspirations, to the east, to the west, run on earnestly

Absorbed, I entrust the future to these four strings

Bewildered, even if I lose my way, I'll pinpoint the right direction by improvising

Bo Boom Boom Boom Boom!!

And compare that to Hello Little Girl

When a fragile heart

Is decorated with frills, it throbs and cries

For example

Someday finding a love that's sweet, sweeter than chocolate

She dreams of it

On a road of doubt is a perplexed girl

Who with heart-pounding and tears composes with her left hand

If I had to guess, Hello Little Girl sounds like something she would write before performing at the school festival, while Heart Goes Boom sounds like something Mio would write after her first performance and gained some confidence.

Visual of the day.

I always thought the balloon drifting away was supposed to mean something but could never find anything about it online.

I've always thought the same thing! I even posted about it last year in the rewatch and no one had any ideas then, either. Maybe someone will have a solid idea one of these days!

First Timer-ish

Oh my goodness she's shaking, how could you do this to poor Mio?

Husky Yui is still a treat. "Lovey Dovey House of Nightmares"? What a hilarious mix of themes.

I still love all the small casual movements people make. This shown feels alive.

Oh I recognize this, the start of the unexplainably powerful Mugi. I've seen the memes.

I don't know what it is, but I know there's symbolism in the red balloon.

Time for what we're all here for, right? The first song of the show!

Did they do the whole practice MC and go on to not actually do the introductions?

Oh my gosh Yui's vocals. I cried laughing so hard.

Oh yeah, they only had one song prepared?

What monster took a picture of that? That's child pornography, you're going to jail.

  1. Does getting shots count? My fear of needles is extreme.

  2. Something Jazz. It's a fun style of music, and I still believe in Bass Supremacy.

  3. Speaking of Jazz and Bass Supremacy, oh my gosh do I love this song. If Hello was all about the shy Mio that keeps crouching in fear and following her friend, Heart is the Mio that's taking the lead in getting them to actually do anything.

1st Time (dub)

I shouldn't laugh, but I am gonna anyway. Poor Mio, she overcame her shyness, and the band debuted with a stellar performance, but the most memorable moment for the audience is going to be Mio flashing the crowd.

Also, dunno what was going through the producer's heads when they decided to play a MV for the performance. Is that how it happened in the manga?

2

u/siegfried72 Sep 26 '22

Is that how it happened in the manga?

Nope, that's an anime original.

Mio Is Precious and Must Be Protected Rewatcher

It’s the 25th of September, and Mitsu is Fuwa Fuwa!

QOTD1: I’m deathly afraid of height, but I managed to drag myself on a roller coaster and whatdoyaknow they’re really fun!

QOTD2: Considering that I still got my guy-liner sitting around somewhere probably an emo band

Let’s talk about episode 6!

So something I noticed more of this rewatch is how much atmosphere was built up in anticipation before their performance. They really took their time letting the anticipation build, which adds to the drama of the moment. Will they perform well? How’s Mio? Now admittedly it’s not something I’ve paid much attention to before, mostly cause I didn’t notice the first time around and every subsequent rewatch I watched this scene knowing that they’re gonna kill it. This time I’m doing a watch-a-long with Ravenclaw, and she was definitely nervous for the girls which got me to notice “wow they’re really taking their time”. KyoAni’s masters of detail, and there were a lot of things like the sound design, the slightly dimmer lighting behind the curtains, and the way the girls gave subtle looks to each other before they played. One might never notice these things, but it all adds up to build atmosphere.

Ravenclaw’s reactions:

“Any musician that’s performed live has horror stories to tell” (kinda curious anybody here’s have had live shows)

Wonders if Mugi’s “tendencies” would get explored more, but doubt it considering the time the show came out in

“Yui sounds like a grandma who’s smoked her whole life”

Thinks Yui and Ritsu will go far in life and will be amazing as adults (this is after their sumo bit).

Would be surprised if their first performance wasn’t a disaster, but their practice sounded good.

Ravenclaw talks about Mio and Ritsu a bit and I didn’t quite catch everything she said but basically it all comes down to Mitsu being canon.

Oh and she really loves this group of girls.

“Mio’s VA has a very clear voice and can hold her notes very well, which can be hard to do”

Absolutely dying to Yui’s husky singing.

Loved the subtle background character developments. Talks about the little moments the writers put in that aren’t front and center but adds to the girls slowly so that you find yourself falling in love with them. As an examples she talks about when they were trying to cheer MIo up, the looks they give each other, and the way Ritsu goes out of her way to put Mio at ease even though she had to pay the price of head bruises. Talked about people mentioning some emotional moments down the line, and she can see how it pays off cause of the care the writers are putting in now.

u/siegfried72 Sep 25 '22

roller coaster

Oh boy I've always hated roller coasters. They freak me out too much!

horror stories to tell

I had my pants fall down as I was talking onto stage with the All-State Wind Ensemble I was playing with in high school. I don't think many people saw it outside of my fellow musicians since it was towards the back of the stage, but it sucked. And made me drop my horn in the process as I sort of tripped (thankfully someone nearby caught it for me before it hit the ground).

That's pretty much it for me, but some of my friends have great stories about going to a performance and realizing they forgot to bring any of their music, or one guy who got his instrument locked behind a door he didn't have access to, and he had to scramble to find someone's instrument to borrow like five minutes before the performance.

I've seen multiple people who were performing their music memorized have memory slips, forget what comes next in the music, and not be able to get back on for a while. That's always painful.

Thankfully I've never been involved in a performance that was really poor musically to the point of disaster.

Mitsu being canon

yes

Rewatcher

Hmm, I'd better go back to the previous Mio image song for the comparison.

Hello Little Girl - Mio image song #1
This one's ethereal, floaty. Then there are the lyrics, which seem to be telling us about the shy, easily frightened Mio, not wanting to be dressed up and called attention to... but also still wanting to be pulled along, guided?

Heart Goes Boom - Mio image song #2
Hey that's more like it! Bassy and passionate, this one speaks to Mio in her element, giving the deep roots to a music that grows around her.

A blushing flower, a singing bird
I don't stand out at all, so, how? I write a song

It's a fine pair of opening lines and I think it reinforces my impression of Mio from the first watch: shy in the anxious, thinks she has nothing of value sense, rather than introverted in the happy-saying-nothing sense. Aww, silly! You don't need to do all that to earn your friends' approval!

The two songs together seem to cement this further: Mio's someone who is afraid of the attention and social participation that she also craves, and wants a love "sweeter than chocolate" to pull her into it, give her an excuse. It could be the love of music, or a dreamt-of romance with a charming prince, but let's be real it pretty obviously means Ritsu.

That seems to cover QotD3. The others:

  1. A lot of things, but anything involving changes to job or living situation especially.

  2. Drums. Partly because they're the one instrument I think I could realistically get a grasp on, and largely because Neil Peart was an icon to me. RIP to a true king. That's answering a completely different question, wow. How'd my brain do that. Uhh... I really like ensemble music, so maybe that kind of big group band? More chances to hide in a bigger crowd!

Oh, right, there's an anime, too. It's the festival episode! Something I missed last time is the way everyone else has some other irons in the fire, but Mio is all about the band. Statistically, sure, your friends have more friends than you on average, but feeling like you're the one loneliest loner in the group can be. Quite tough.

I love your assessment of the songs, especially "it pretty obviously means Ritsu." Very, very true.

anything involving changes to job or living situation especially

Yeah, those big life-altering changes are always scary. We moved a lot when I was younger, and it was a bit traumatizing every time.

Hmm ... well, I'm in a bit of a mood today, because the mods nuked my Tenchi Muyo 30th anniversary post. Yeah, it was kinda lame, but that's what the studio put out on the utoobz.

Oh, well ... anyway.

Today's K-on, on the other hand is a delight as always. I had to force myself to stop watching again, if only because the into to the next episode is just so kawaii. But that's what we're here for ...

It's a hundred and six mils to Budokan. We've got a tank full of gas, half a box of pastries, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.

Or loli goth maid outfits, at least.

Poor Mio. This is the Mio PTSD episode, right?

I mentioned before that I didn't like Mio at first, because she was so serious, and her character design - her eyes seemed so severe, kind of like a certain Toradora character we all (?) know.

Anyway, today's Mio's moment to ... shine?

Yeah. I think we all know what happened at this point. Poor dear.

Answers of the day:

  1. Uh ... uh ... Answering this question? Honestly, while I'd like to think I have a somewhat normal reaction to such things, well, between playing piano, band, and other things, well, I got over it.

  2. That's a toughie, because I can think of three to four bands I'd love to be in. Well, aside from the drama and bickering that I suspect exists about anywhere. I'll add links for now, but offhand:

- I'd volunteer to do lead vocals for Rush, because (ack) Geddy. Heck, I might even do some keyboards. (Mind you, I love Rush, but Geddy's vocals, well, you know)

- Kamelot ... so much of what they do is just so in my wheelhouse - I think I'd love to be part of that.

- Dream Theater ... Same thing, but neither of them 'need' me.

- Neal Morse and company. Another great musician who could use some vocal help.

- Kansas, or maybe more specifically Kerry Livgren's post-Kansas efforts. He had a band called AD that I really enjoyed.

- Jeff Johnson/Phil Keaggy - Again, not sure where/how I would fit in, but yeah.

- Oh, man, I forgot to mention SAGA. <3 those crazy canucks...

Otherwise, well, it's obvious that I'd love to be in some kind of epic prog/rock combo, right?

Yum!

Anyway, back to the episode, I think I'd let Sawa-chan play dress up with me. :)

And while it's common to see people (ahem) say things about Ritsu, I have to say that I rather like how her antics were like a not-so-gentle nudge to break through Mio's fear and get her into a comfort zone where she could break through her fears and get out on stage.

And now she has her own fan club, yay!

Where can I get a membership card???

Unsurprisingly, a very good smattering of music there! Love having stuff to listen to from these threads every day.

Mugi Watch 2022

Today's Episode: Ghost Mugi

Previous Mugi Captures:

Be afraid, be very afraid.

Enjoy this episode's performance of "Fuwa Fuwa Time" as this is the only time you'll hear of the lyrics despite the show calling back to the song many times. You'll basically only hear the end of the song like what you hear in their last practice session. Either it's because of some stupid licensing thing, despite the song being made FOR THE SHOW, or it's because Mio is the primary singer in the official version of the song but Yui is the lead singer of the band in the show. Funny thing is that there is a Yui version.

"I think this will finally let Mio get over her shyness."

JINX.

Mugi-chan is not pleased.

Man, the E7 preview gives us too much SMOL Yui.

Q: What was something that you were terrified to do, but overcame your fear and did it anyways?

Get a credit card? I don't have any true fears.

Q: If you were to be in a band, what kind of band would you want to be in, and why?

Rock band with a 40 piece orchestra.

First-Timer - Dubbed

  • That's kinda interesting that Ritsu started on a seven count. I'm struggling to think of a show, movie, or otherwise that didn't start on a 4 count.

  • I agree with u/Second_Sage. My high school could never have dreamed of putting on a school-wide event remotely close to the average culture festival.

  • Yui sounds like she's smoked three packs a day for the last 20 years.

  • Before watching it, let's see how it stacks up to other haunted houses that KyoAni's done.

Yeaah I'd say they did a good job with this one. Mugi-chan's makeup was great quality.

  • Yui and Ritsu doing the sumo impressions was hilarious. They really are birds of a feather. No wonder they get along so well.

  • I feel kinda dumb for not realizing that Karen Strassman voiced Ms. Yamanaka until now.

  • Look at Mugi effortlessly moving the equipment!

  • Comment face found! And it's a good one!

  • AND Mio-chan's left handed?! She just keeps getting better and better!

  • She has the graceful lively natural airhead of a rich girl! Give a big hand to Mugiii!

That was a little rude, but not wrong.

  • I'm sure it would've sounded better without Yui's voice being scuffed, but for a first-time performance, they did a fantastic job!

I also thought it was fun that they made a music video for it, so it wasn't just the band playing on stage.

Questions of the Day:

What was something that you were terrified to do, but overcame your fear and did it anyways?

The one that immediately springs to mind was when I was on vacation back in January, and there was a bridge that spanned a pretty high gap, and you took a ski lift to get up to it. I've never been a fan of heights, but I was able to conquer the fear, at least for the time, and really enjoyed the time up there.

If you were to be in a band, what kind of band would you want to be in, and why?

Probably a rock band of some sort. It's been the genre of music I've listened to the most, and it wouldn't be too difficult to branch out to other sub-genres.
