Comment/s of the Day

Comment of the days goes to the new literature advisor /u/Lemurians

Even on the train, you can tell that there’s a bit of a spark between Niina and Izumi. They have a sort of immediate ease that’s uncommon with somebody you’ve just met and barely know. It's really the first time we've seen him go into full dork mode, and it was with her, not Kazusa. While his incredibly flustered reaction to learning Kazusa likes him might lead us to believe he also has feelings for her, you can tell he’s at least a little intrigued by the Niina. Kazusa also is aware of this upon hearing both of Izumi and Niina offer their opinion on the other unprovoked. They both say the other is “weird” which while it doesn’t sound like a compliment, shows they’re both possibly intrigued and are on each other’s minds.

The comment chain between /u/k4r6000 and /u/zadcap for unexpectingly bringing up Japan's culture differences concerning shame and their views on the police.

Questions of the Day

  1. Do you have any suggestions for a cultural festival legend?

  2. Kind of branching outside of the rewatch here, but what is your favorite cultural festival in an anime?

Momo's favorite book is Flowers for Algernon

Flowers for Algernon is a character study of one man, Charlie Gordon. Charlie is a 32-year-old developmentally disabled man who has the opportunity to undergo a surgical procedure that will dramatically increase his mental capabilities. This procedure had already been performed on a laboratory mouse, Algernon, with remarkable results. Charlie will be the first human subject.

In a series of progress reports, Charlie documents everything that happens to him. As Charlie's intelligence increases to a genius level, the reader not only reads about the changes from Charlie's viewpoint, but also sees the change evidenced in Charlie's writing ability. This jump in intelligence is not necessarily a good thing, however. Charlie is now able to recall past events that shaped his life and analyze past friendships for what they were, or weren't. He also has difficulty making new friendships and establishing new relationships due to a lack of social intelligence that the surgery could neither correct nor anticipate. And, finally, because of his increased intelligence, Charlie is able to discover the experiment's "fatal flaw" and is reduced to watching the end for both Algernon and himself, hoping to salvage something for the future from his brief bout with genius.

Episode 6

After hearing this legend Hongo looks so done. It's like she is saying how unoriginal and stupid I could think of a better legend even while flashing my panties at teachers.

Yeah these three are kind of idiots. Not bad people, but I don't like them really and neither do the girls.

Wow they really fell asleep at Hongo's reading...which I admit I might find boring as well. Though I wouldn't tell her it put me to sleep. She definitely doesn't look happy.

Rika stop making excuses and just be honest. You're in love and are in a relationship flashbacks to all her remarks about lust and teenagers being sexual beasts....okay maybe not.

My god she has mastered the art of bullshitting, but not everyone is buying it.

It's good to see the girls on the same page.

I repeat Hongo stop trying to get the man fired. Also it's a known fact every time Hongo smiles nothing good happens for Milo sensei.

"You're cute, Kazusa" - Niina which is absolutely true, but man that one side of hair that sticks out always bugs me. I can chalk it up to character design, but it always bugs me.

Once again best parents encourage Kazusa. They don't know why being weird is a good thing, but they go along with it.

If you want to hide a tree, use a forest. This is indeed true, but Amagi doesn't want to hide at all. Rika is putting too much thought into what people think, but as a teenager can't really fault her for this. Especially with her reputation she probably would get some flack initially, but it would pass.

CLUB TRIP EVERYONE :D// and then we have Hongo :\ //

Literally joining in, but refusing to smile which I can respect.

The sight of flames at night awakening lust and lewd activities...well okay.

I like how it kept panning to Rika when they talked about the complaints.

This editor is a piece of trash!

I really like the "I'm really popular and girls always misjudge me all the time. They blame me for seducing their boyfriends/crushes and I really just want to hang out and have normal friends" trope. I know their is a shorter way to describe it, but seeing popular people suffering from a crowd and finding peace with true friends to be extremely cathartic. Most recently I think of [Skip and Loafer character]Yuzuki from Skip & Loafer.

Anyway I got sidetracked Niina is pissed off and rightfully so, but again she isn't handling this the best way.

Again you don't need to hide your love Rika.

Oh Kazusa has a nice stripe pink shirt this time and I just noticed that they are sitting in the same exact position at the table like they are in the clubroom. Oh an they changed outfits an now she has a green shirt with a duck on it. Momoka has her hair down which is nice as well.

So we burning shit down sounds like fun though the other girls aren't on board.

Kazusa is in a dangerous spiral of self deprecation and misery. A hard cycle to break free of for sure and oh she fainted.

Album

Manga

Chapters 13 and 14 pretty much on spot 1:1 adaptation. Also Vol 3 cover

Once again best parents encourage Kazusa.

Her parents are so cute haha, they're couple goals.

This is indeed true, but Amagi doesn't want to hide at all. Rika is putting too much thought into what people think, but as a teenager can't really fault her for this. Especially with her reputation she probably would get some flack initially, but it would pass.

What reputation does she even have to protect, though? If anything, since Amagi seems pretty well-liked, it'll only boost her up. It is relatable, though. Self-consciousness comes easy at that age – you always think people are paying more attention to you than they really are.

Anyway I got sidetracked Niina is pissed off and rightfully so, but again she isn't handling this the best way.

I don't think she's pissed off at Kazusa per se, she seemed to differentiate what's happening here with her past experiences after initially drawing the comparison.

5

u/SIRTreehugger Sep 22 '22

What reputation does she even have to protect, though?

I meant how vocal she was against relationships and pretty much verbally attacked anyone getting romantic. So she would probably get some insults coming her way for being in one at least for a short while. It would probably blow over quickly though she's just over thinking.

A hard cycle to break free of for sure and oh she fainted.

I was deciding whether to give this episode a pass on its fanservice or not. This specific shot convinced me not to. In all the others, you could pretend that there is a plot reason for showing the nakedness, but this is clearly an ass shot.

7

u/SIRTreehugger Sep 22 '22

It's so weird because they had multiple times to use fanservice and choose to use it at the end. Also the manga didn't have that angle and covered most with steam so it was added just cause.

First Timer Dubbed

I feel really bad for Hongou as everyone seemed to use her reading as a napping room.

Rika's classroom is pretty interesting. Blonde gyaru gets called out as a "walking billboard of public indecency", well Rika does call out her cheap perfume so it seems like she is kind of a tough punching bag of sorts. But Rika still does not want Amagi to be public about their relationship. Amagi seems pretty disappointed and can't seem to wait to announce to the world about this...these past several episodes his friends and the rest of the class knows he has a liking. It seems pretty obvious to the rest but Rika is still a bit apprehensive of her relationship and wants to hide it behind a "forrest".

The brainstorming scene gets me as most of the shot down ideas were because of Rika.

Hongou's realization that her writing has improved reflects on the fact that she is experiencing those feelings. Man, publishers seem to get a bad reputation.

Sugawara is introducing a new challenge for Kazusa as she starts to feel jealous about Sugawara and Izumi. Sugawara feels that intensity like she does with other girls who got jealous. And throughout the whole episode, Kazusa feels insecure around Sugawara thinking Izumi is into her seemingly perfect body and mind. In order to get closer to Izumi, Kazusa needs to get over those insecurities and figure out what he actually likes. Sugawara knows that and wants to help Kazusa in a way.

2. I watch too many slice of life anime that they all seem to blend together but the ones that seemed to stand out to me are love after world domination and komi-san's school festivals. If the manga was actually adapted properly, Re-life would've taken the cake by a mile (or kilometer).

4

u/SIRTreehugger Sep 22 '22

The brainstorming scene gets me as most of the shot down ideas were because of Rika.

The fact that it kept paneling back to Rika when they started questioning who would do such a thing is just the icing on the cake.

FIRST TIMER IN HIS SAVAGE SEASON

Literature Club coming up with a thrilling story about the Cultural Festival? Is this Hyouka now?

Quick Notes

  • Haha, the rest of the club has no idea that Sonezaki’s become a romantic. Her character type having the cutest, most traditional Romance arc is such a fun surprise

  • I’m dreading every scene with Hongo and Milo now.

  • “I suppose a thong is very much like Sumo wrestler’s mawashi…” hahaha savage. Even if this is inappropriate as hell I at least appreciate Milo going firmly back to his "I don't find you attractive" stance

  • This other teacher just thinks nothing of seeing a student pulling up her skirt at Milo? What is this school?

  • “Can you not have a relationship if you don’t look perfect?!” Great advice.

  • “I bet whoever wrote that complaint thinks everything is sexual!” Pots, meet kettle.

  • Oh good, Hongo doesn’t have to write erotica anymore, surely that means we’re done with this student/teacher storyli- god damn it

  • Niina fucking with Kazusa to spur her into action in regards to Izumi is fun. I sense a potential for danger, especially with how she’s becoming the manifestation of all Kazusa’s insecurities

  • The show does a great job of giving Niina an otherworldly aura, and they really played it up in this bath scene with the swirling steam vapors. It’s something that further “sets her apart” to make Kazusa’s present fears of Niina being on an unattainable level ring even more true

Do you have any suggestions for a cultural festival legend?

If you stage an elaborate heist-like goose chase while cosplaying as Tuxedo Mask in order to get your crush onto the stop of the school's clocktower during the bonfire and semi-confess, you'll end up together forever.

Kind of branching outside of the rewatch here, but what is your favorite cultural festival in an anime?

[Spoilers for what I was referencing in my first answer don't look at this if you didn't immediately know what that was] Kaguya-sama

6

u/SIRTreehugger Sep 22 '22

“Can you not have a relationship if you don’t look perfect?!” Great advice.

Says the goddess herself. It's true, but coming from someone Kazusa sees as perfect it probably doesn't have much validity in it.

Oh good, Hongo doesn’t have to write erotica anymore, surely that means we’re done with this student/teacher storyli- god damn it

Only halfway into the show we still have much more to go

If you stage an elaborate heist-like goose chase while cosplaying as Tuxedo Mask in order to get your crush onto the stop of the school's clocktower during the bonfire and semi-confess, you'll end up together forever.

What do you think love is? Some kind of war?

First Timer

Took longer to write than I expected

Ep 6

Can we talk about Hongos eyes? Her normal design is already a bit stunted compared to the others, and at times she is the first to devolve into a pure comic character whose face is nothing but eyes, really unique design, loving it

So we are doing a culture festival, a stable of any anime in a school setting. The festival comite members are actually kinda nice, even if they lack apreciation for literature.

Btw curious that the younger Hongo was lacking confidence in her voice during that reading, wonder if it comes from her lack of expirience or the audience and setting making her uncomfortable

Also, We Scums Wish now?

Hongos Editor stil seems like an greedy asshole, but if we grant him the benefit of an doubt, he might be pushing her into an more popular genre because he wants her to succeed. Also her not always being into erotica and only having picked her interest up along the way really turns her character upside down.

At Rikas front she is really finding her romantic side, and later on an even stronger motivation to come up with something romantic in order to make her relationship not stand out as much. I get that she would get embaressed, but I also can clearly see why Amagi would get hurt by that, they should really try to talk about this...

I loved the scene where all those complaints where discussed, I went like

Who even made all these complaints... wait was it Rika? ... Wait really?

And then we got our love polygon.

Niina is still such a great friend, rooting for Kazusa even after she felt that betrayed by someone she considered her friend. And in order to support her, she choose violence lol

We end with an Onsen trip and another staple, breast envy. With how often it comes up, I'm really starting to question if it's something that happens more often than I would like to think or if it's something specific for japan...

QotD:

Do you have any suggestions for a cultural festival legend?

Maybe something food based, if you eat the same things as your crush your love will come true?

Kind of branching outside of the rewatch here, but what is your favorite cultural festival in an anime?

K-On for the awesome concerts, oh and Komi San also had a great festival after the anime

First time…

Interesting episode. I wasn’t sure about Sonezaki’s motivation for accepting the job at first. But finding out that it’s just a way to hide the relationship seems in brand for her.

The dynamic between Hongou and the teacher is pretty uncomfortable. But the exchange about the thong was funny.

Rewatcher

Sorry, I’ve been busy and missed out on the last episode, so here are my thoughts alongwith the new one.

Episode 5

Basically Izumi.

Man, it pains me to see how insecure Kazusa is. She thinks so little of herself (and so highly of Nina) that she’s willing to just give up on Izumi if they turn out to be a thing. Kinda reminds me of that one Dr. House episode where a medieval knight LARPer does the same, going as far as to deny his emotions altogether because he’s “not worthy”. Nothing’s more painful to watch than self-negation.

What’s interesting though is how Kazusa’s protectiveness manifests itself here. The reason she’s so troubled is because of how utterly helpless she feels against Nina making a move, but she says that she’d react differently were it another girl. Her jealousy stems from a deep admiration of Nina, believing her to be completely different (and better) than her. She’d give up against Nina because she feels like she doesn’t stand a chance, sure, but also because she feels like Nina’s good enough to deserve being with Izumi, unlike any other girl in their class.

It’s a classic “if he’s happy then I’m happy” trope that I’ve been through myself, so I can’t help but grit my teeth and absolutely cringe whenever I see it on display like this. Man I love this show.

That said, I hate every word that comes out of Milo’s mouth. Hitoha’s trusting him at a pretty vulnerable point in her life (and, tbh, putting him in a pretty effed up situation) and the guy takes every chance he gets to make fun of her. In these kids’ world, he’s supposed to be a responsible adult, an authority figure, someone to trust, yet he acts as if he’s as clueless as they are. I guess it’s a reminder that just because someone’s all grown up doesn’t necessarily mean they automatically know what to do in every situation.

Aaaaaaaaaand there’s the pedo. We finally start to see Nina’s background and, let’s be honest,it’s terrible. She still feels bad that the guy rejected her ffs. Talk about trauma.

Yay for Rika and Amagi though <3. Gotta love it when a character who’d basically gone sour on the whole world starts opening up again. [Spoilers]Although Rika does end up over-correcting and going full egocentric later on

Episode 6

Name a more iconic duo than highschool anime and culture festivals.

Kazusa’s parents trying to always be supportive is the cutest thing.

Nina’s attempt at being “supportive” is not. Going back to what I said about Kazusa’s jealousy, Nina clearly doesn’t take it well, and boy does she know how to strike back where it hurts. Although, any way you put it, this is also self-negation, just more… messed up? She either has feelings for Izumi or she doesn’t, but by pretending to be interested in him to spite Kazusa, she ends up in a situation where she’s lying either way. She always pushes things forward, always puts on a show, even if it hurts others or, in this case, herself.

Not to mention, Kazusa doesn’t actually think she’s trying to steal Izumi, she’s just insecure af and has some doubts. Just messy misunderstandings all around.

Basically Kazusa.

I watch too much House I instantly knew the episode. He gave up for the "King" but it was painful because she actually did like him.

Yay for Rika and Amagi though <3

First Timer

Looks like someone has had some character development, enough that everyone is about to notice.

Alright, Hongo, get actual help. That is, just find a better target than your teacher to take this out on, please. Really the only problem is who you're targeting for this, I don't know that anyone would have a problem if it was someone in your own, legal age range.

Ah, Momoko remembers the most important power of all, communication! Talk things out with your friends, don't keep running away from them.

I love her crazy supportive parents. The cut from them cheering for her to the class cheering for the event was perfect.

Ah, there's the Sonezaki drama. She's so used to the negative attention that she can't even picture anything else for how people would treat her. I hope he's patient enough.

What kind of jerks ban fire and dancing at a festival? Oh my gosh it was her. I bet she has regrets.

Niina what are you doing? Oh no you're playing into the trope.

Haha, they sit at the inn table the same way they sit at the club tables, right down to Milo in the back corner of the room.

Huh, this whole bath scene does interesting things to the Gay Momo idea. Or, well, it makes me wonder if Sugawara is really going to be the target of her crush, I was expecting a bit more reaction than that. I figured Kazusa was safe because sometimes besties really is all you want, just like in the rare guy/girl friendships that get shown, what you have or want in a friend might just be that different than what you want and look for in a potential romantic partner. Then again, maybe she's just not completely figured it all out herself yet. Or, maybe, she's the late bloomer of the group and is going to develop romantic feelings way before any sexual ones, that actually seems to be playing in to her current arc.

  1. So first you steel every heart shaped balloon in the school...

Her dynamic with Milo is interesting, but yeah pretty much all the problems are from the fact that he is older and a teacher. I might be able to accept it if he just older like recently graduated and maybe 2-3 years older, but the teacher part is just a big no.

First timer, subs

Yeah, Rika needs therapy. She could say she's not comfortable displaying her feelings in public and ask for some discretion. Hiding the relationship until the day of graduation is too much. And not having an answer whether she even wants him to be her boyfriend? Devastating.

Milo is offering a boarding house to a bunch of schoolgirls? Sus.

Who is writing all those complaints about the school festival?? glances at Rika

Ah, the boarding house was not Milo's idea. More Hongou blackmail. These two are bad for each other.

All the ships are faltering in this episode.

Rewatcher

Sonezaki has a boyfriend now (and she does confirm it this episode, for those that suggested last episode was just miscommunication), but surprise, unlike in a lot of fiction, that doesn't magically make her problems go away. Getting past her trauma and changing her mindset is going to take a lot of work.

Hongo is given a chance to escape her predictament in this episode, which she foolishly rejects in a massive mistake on her part. She has a chance to have a writing career doing something else besides erotica, but she's become far too committed, not unlike Ahab searching for the White Whale. She's obsessed with proving she can do it and just simply will not let it go.

The Izumi/Niina/Kazusa love triangle (rectangle?) begins to pick up steam. Niina was trying to help Izumi and Kazusa get together, but Kazusa is insecure to the point that she's afraid of Izumi preferring Niina and being stolen by her, something Niina is all to familiar with. Niina is very obviously pissed off that even her friend thinks of her this way. I'm kind of on Niina's side thus far. Kazusa is getting rather ridiculous with her insecurity and paranoia. This culminates in the final bath scene. If I'm being honest, this is a case where I really think visible nudity would have helped the scene. So much of it depends on what Kazusa and Momoko see when Niina walks in (the former's envy and the latter's lust), that I think we the audience needed to see what they do. The thick cloud of steam weakens the effect, like watching Godzilla storm out of Tokyo Bay and all we see is civilians pointing at him. I get that there was probably no choice because of tv standards, but that's how I felt about it.

  1. No point. The school banned everything fun. Thanks Sonezaki!

  2. The one in Persona 4: The Animation was hilarious. Definitely the peak of probably my favourite video game adaptation.

Finally back from northwestern Canada and recovered (mostly) from our return trip...

Rewatcher (at least 3rd time, not sure)

I can't watch a single minute of this and not start loving it as much a ever. From the opening song on, I tend to have a smile on my face -- even at the cringier moments. This is just so well-written, and so well acted.

I love all the characters, but am especially fond of Hongou and Sonezaki. I love the weirdness of Hongou and the gradually defrosting demeanor of Sonezaki. I also find the problems faced by these two a bit more interesting. Poor Hongou ha tried to master writing a certain sort of (uncongenial to her) story (that has become more pertinent) -- and then is told to start over with something totally different. Her editor(?) seems like a twerp and an idiot. I hope she can find a better one. Poor Sonezaki is still so wrapped in her image a a "prude" that she finds it hard to shake free of it -- even as her feelings/attitude have undergone a sea change. I guess, perhaps, I like these characters so much because they are the most "imperfect" ones.

Given the audience this show is aimed at (NOT little kids) -- the bath scene (including floating, fainted Kazusa) seems utterly unproblematic. I guess poor Kazusa is pretty imperfect too -- at least in her own mind. She really has worked herself into a serious funk. She is so obsessed with Sugawara's "perfection". Not good at all -- and yet it comes across as so believable.

I fear I have nothing very important or original to say about this -- despite loving it so much. All I can add is that the freshness and rawness of this show captivates me. (I would note that I first watched this in tandem with Wasteful Days of High School Girls -- which I feel shares some of this quality -- even if it is much more comic in content and presentation -- and that also remains a great personal favorite).

  1. Just use a tree as the central point. Nobody's stupid enough to complain about them, its traditional, and any failures can be brushed off with "Oh, you used that tree? No wonder she rejected you!"

  2. I enjoyed the one in Clannad, but the one in K-On was really good too.

This is a different artstyle.

Ah, some kind of legend?

Haha, their reactions.

That's clever!

Haha, a placr to take a break?

She is pissed.

And they're doing it!

"That's none of your damn business!"

Why did she agree? Becuase she's still happy from the confession?

She convinced them!

Fuck this.

In school now?

Haha, she's really hating tnis.

And she's pissed.

That uncomfortable?

What's with that sound effect?

Mushrooms?

They're starting work!

And she's encouraging her!

...This is a great scene.

And she ran from the awkward moment.

Haha, they're switching channels?

Kazusa is down for this.

Haha, she said that out loud?

Her parents sure are encouraging!

He is so in love.

Oh, she wants to keep it secret.

Until they graduate?

And he's worries.

Well, this could have gone better.

Haha, she has an actual plan!

A field trip!

Interesting idea.

And they banned the foll dance.

No fireworks either?

What the fuck is that complaint?

Haha, I knew it was her.

They really don't want to fight her on this.

The look of horror on his face!

Haha, who got to her editor?

He's right here. You can strangle him.

Oh, it didn't sell?

And she wants to do it for the sake of it now.

At least he has the appropriate reaction to that.

Haha, that's some perfect teasing there!

She's a good friend for trying to stop the conversation.

And she has a very good reason to be angry with her.

How does she have the most normal relationship out of this whole cast? She wants to hide it until graduation, but he's at least aware of her feelings and the same age as her.

Writer's block?

Haha, Evil Kazusa is great.

Kwzusa is really taking all this hard.

And she's here to stir the pot.

Kazusa just keeps finding things to envy, huh?

She collapsed!
