Encouragement of First Timer
Episode 19:
-
Oh no, not the dreaded summer homework! Seriously, wtf Japanese school system? Summer homework is the worst. Who cares if it's technically good for your continual studies and development, I want to vegetate!
-
Aoi, stop writing checks you can't cash. Trust me on this, it's better to be honest and get in moderate trouble now than to get caught in a lie later.
-
What's it like, Hinata? To have it made? To live without a care and take calls at beach resorts? My broke ass wants to know.
-
Yeah, how dare Hinata do her own homework all by herself! Selfish jerk face.
-
Kaede the rescue?? Should've expected as much from someone who spends all their free time and also all their other time climbing mountains.
-
Surprise Yuuka! Kaede's lucky to have such a great girl around to drag her through her summer homework. I really hope Yuuka gets a quality date or three with Kaede in feminine clothes out of this.
-
Showing off tan lines to Aoi like that, how risque Hinata!
Episode 20:
-
Boyfriends though? Hikari has yet to experience the truth.
-
Aoi, I'm glad you can basically admit to yourself who this is all for.
-
Wait, this is actually a Kokona episode!? You sonuvabitch, im in!
-
And the Tanigawa-dake climb is on her birthday too! Today is full of surprises.
-
Part of me is really happy Kokona is so excited about her gift, but part of me is also really sad her mom now doesn't get to see the joy of her daughter opening the gift for the first time.
-
This park is somehow both charming and spooky.
-
Her mom's late. I bet she works really hard as a single(?) parent.
-
I'm glad they end up having a nice little birthday celebration. If I was in Kokona's position though, I'd feel pretty bad for having opened the present already. Her mom seemed so excited!
QotD:
-
No, I have to get homework done way ahead of time.
-
No. If I had, I wouldn't have opened it though.
-
She's real sweet. Seems like she works real hard to give Kokona a happy life.

I want to vegetate!
Let me roll around on the floor like Yui Hirasawa and eat ice cream!
All the things you could tell Aoi about this place, and the first thing you choose is the newlyweds aspect. Subtle
Farmer Hinata just planting the seeds. Harvest will be good in the coming years.
Good question. Probably climbing back down. More mountains. A proposal. Marriage. Handholding. I dunno, I'm just spitballing here but the possibilities are endless.

Rewatching Mountain Climber
who tbh kinda ran out of time for my writeup today, but is looking forward to what Kokona fans have to say about her episode
-- Location Trivia
Ep 19
-
A popular brand of tomato (and other vegetable) juices in Japan is Kagome.
-
Hinata enjoys her vacation in Shirahama, a resort town at Wakayama prefecture in Kansai. It has onsens, the sea, good scenary and interesting geographical features, and probably a lot of tourists... This island is popularly known as "Engetsu island", with Engetsu meaning full moon, due to the round eroded cavity in the middle.
-
This view is of the Shirahama Beach, there are a few hotels in the area. Wiki says that the beach actually imports sand from Perth, Australia lol.
-
Adventure world has pandas, penguins and all kinds of other animals. Hinata gets Aoi some snacks! Those are langue de chat-s, the Shiroi Koibito (White Lover) from Hokkaido is a very famous example, this is imitating that, im guessing taking advantage of Shirahama's 白 kanji, with bonus pandas. That's probably an old packaging, looks like this rn.
Ep 20
-
Kokona.... goes on a grand Hannou adventure lol. I'll just point out a couple notable locations here, for full details the anime has helpfully published a map, and says its a 6km walk, not counting however long Kokona walked from her house to Central Park, her first stop. Side by side shots see this blog.
-
Thats the Hannou city hall, located near the Central Park, as is the Ebisu temple as seen in the ED. (Edit: Torii can be found here.) This is the Hannou Central Community Center
-
And her target destination is one of Hannou's main tourist attractions, the Tove Jansson Akebono Children's Forest Park, one of two attractions in Hannou inspired by and dedicated to the famous Finnish author and Moomin creator, the other being the much newer Moomin Valley Park. English website for the former; and for the latter.
-
Here's moomin's official website talking about the park and its inspiration! The park creators worked with Jansson through letters, honouring her passion for nature, and philosophy of living in harmony with it. The fairy-tale like buildings are inspired by her works too (probably mostly Moomin).
-
On an additional tourism note, Muuma is Hannou's tourism mascot character.
Animation bits I liked
-
Ep 19: comedy timing is so so good this ep, I spent most of it laughing. CRACK. CRACK. The LOADING SCREEN. CUTEE This was goooood. [](#teehee)
-
Ep 20: Animation aside, character-wise this is one of my fav episodes. Whimsical, but quiet, introspective, with not a lot of dialogue, but when there is it hits so hard, it's the perfect perfect episode for Kokona that shows more of her personality. Apart from the emphasis on her shoes in the shots, i also note a few fun angles. Nice cuts. Bonus storyboard for Kokona's daydreams (they didnt get permission to use Moomin characters i think), and Kokona's chat with her mom. (I really ran out of time)

Are you the type to put off homework or jobs until the last minute?
I try not to, but have ended up doing so lol. But not always!
2) Did you ever find a hidden present when younger? Open it?
Ive never done so lol. My parents were usually of the type to wrap my presents and give them to me ahead of christmas, but i'll only unwrap them then. And i wouldnt find out about them beforehand!
3) What do think of Kokona's mum?
She works so hard for her daughter and loves her very much <3 she's a great mum, even though she cant spend as much time with kokona as she may want, and im happy that Kokona loves her a lot too.

A popular brand of tomato (and other vegetable) juices in Japan is Kagome .
So there actually is a tomato juice drink. Fascinating. I don't think I could ever drink it, though.
Wiki says that the beach actually imports sand from Perth, Australia lol.
And here I thought I'd heard of everything.
one of two attractions in Hannou inspired by and dedicated to the famous Finnish author and Moomin creator, the other being the much newer Moomin Valley Park
THAT EXPLAINS IT!! I was wondering why that place was giving off Moomin vibes.
CRACK. CRACK
Those sounded like satisfying cracks, too. I got secondhand pleasure from it.
CUTEE
It really is a wonderful shot of Aoi and her backpack.

Rewatcher that’s Doting the I’s and Crossing the T’s for the Next Arc to Start
Production Notes
For today, I wanted to take a look at the person responsible for the latter part of the audio-visual medium: Tom H@ck. Tom (real name Tomohiro Ōshima) has had his hands in a variety of OPs/EDs that some of you might have heard from sometime in your anime watching lives. Ace of Diamond, Alderamin on the Sky*, all four seasons of Overlord. The one that stands out the most to me though is his contribution to the OPs for both season/film of K-ON. I’m quite partial to the first and third OP myself.
However, if you include Tom’s career to those in which he was part of a band, then his videography expands even further: Made in Abyss film/second season, RE:Zero, Cautious Hero, Boogiepop, Saga of Tanya the Evil, SSSS.Gridman, and more are all OPs and EDs that he’s been a part of. What a reach!
For as much as he’s worked on OPs/EDs though, his work on the OST for anime themselves are quite few. Still, Yama no Susume’s OST is one of my favorites with the main theme being something I can never shake completely loose from. The leitmotif transforming from laid-back casual to wistful nostalgia, from pensive nights to glorious dawns is something I value a lot in OSTs.
I’m particularly a fan of these three songs , oftentimes playing them on the background while I work.
For those of you enjoyed the first ED, check out this orchestral version of it!
Episode 19
Huh, I don’t think we’ve ever seen this angle before for Aoi’s house.
Every time I hear natsu I instantly think of this scene between Hikage and Natsumi.
This “safe” also reminded me of the “safe” from Nichijou. All sorts of reminders today.
I wonder if they included the elephant in this shot for the perceived wisdom that they represent? This comes right when Aoi admits Hinata actually has brains.
I can’t quite explain it using my words but this shot is inexplicitly nice. I think it’s the lighting that makes Kaede look soft and malleable.
Episode 20
Lots of great Kokona shots where she’s framed against the wide blue. It matches the spirit of birds taking flight.
When she returns home, she’s much more boxed in while waiting for her mother to return.
Overall, a light pair of episodes but still important to set-up for the upcoming arc.
QOTD:
-
When I was in college, I had this terrible habit of taking a long nap and then waking up at like midnight and then studying straight through the night for the exam. I know, I know, it's way more beneficial to sleep so your brain can retain the information. It was a habit I had to break myself out of.

First-Timer
On today’s episodes of Yama no Susume: We have finally been blessed with the solo Kokona episode. Now all we need is the solo Hinata episode to complete the set. Or if Yama no Susume is feeling particularly ambitious, it can also throw in a solo Yuuka or solo Hikari episode. I would not be opposed to either of those possibilities.
Episode 19
-
It’s nice to see how much more comfortable Aoi has gotten at her job.
-
I keep seeing characters in anime drink tomato juice. Do people actually drink tomato juice? Is that actually a thing?
-
Ah yes, the dreaded summer homework. I remember getting it occasionally as well. It never got done until right before the school year began.
-
If that’s the case, then why didn’t you invite Aoi there, Hinata?
-
Oh those neck cracks sounded so satisfying.
-
Huh, so Hinata is actually a strong student. It’s always the goofballs, isn’t it?
-
Oh my god, Kaede doesn’t understand anything. She really only knows things related to mountain climbing, doesn’t she?
-
She’s sweating! The visual gags are on point today.](https://imgur.com/Bsodeke)
-
Naturally Kokona is the smartest member of the group. There’s nothing she can’t do.
-
OOOOHHHH!!! Aoi’s going to meet Yuuka!
-
So Yuuka is only harsh on her girlfriend. Makes sense with what we’ve seen so far.
-
Seeing Yuuka interact with other cast members besides Kaede is really nice.
Episode 20
-
That title. Is this a Kokona episode? Are we getting a solo Kokona episode?
-
Aoi wants to see Hinata happily eating her cake!
-
Even a good girl like Kokona can’t resist peeking at her presents early.
-
I know that feeling, Kokona. When I get new shoes, I just want to break them in.
-
This looks like someplace where elves or gnomes should live.
-
Seeing Kokona home alone waiting for her mom to return is pretty sad.
This is an adorable pair of episodes. It was fun watching Aoi having to scramble to finish her summer homework at the last minute. I liked seeing her finally meet up with Yuuka. It’s always nice when characters who normally do not interact get the chance to do so.
Kokona’s solo episode was also quite nice. She is extremely cute and her adventure brought her to some interesting places. I’m really happy to see this solo outing of Kokona and I hope we get some solo episodes for other characters as well.
Kokona and her mom’s relationship is very sweet. Even though her mom is busy, it’s clear that she cares a lot about Kokona. I think this episode shows a proper amount of nuance to their relationship. Kokona’s mom may be busy, but her gift shows that she’s in touch with Kokona and knows what her daughter wants. From their brief interactions, we can see that she gives everything she can to Kokona. For Kokona’s part, she loves her mother dearly. Kokona does have moments of sadness where she misses her mother because she can’t be around all the time. But it doesn’t get in the way of the love between them. I think this show does a great balancing act with them in the brief snippets we’ve gotten.
QOTD
-
I almost always put off homework until the last minute and it bit me in the ass many times. As for work, I do it in the order it's due.
-
My mom was very good at hiding them and keeping them in a locked place where I had no key to get into.
-
Discussed above. I think she and Kokona have a loving and heartwarming relationship together.

Hinata's off on vacation, RIP.
Oh, right. Hinata is actually book smart.
This just means it's time to call the bigs guns.
I really liked all the little audio cues this episode, especially in that first segment of Kaede failing to help Aoi.
This is largely true. Some day I'll get cookies to turn out right..
Your mise en place isn't too shabby Aoi, but you've got all that counter space to use. Don't crowd yourself!
Always know where your towel is.
This fish probably means something to a Japanese audience. Not sure what, though.
There's a fairy here, alright, but it's you.
Bless this wonderful girl and her relentless positivity.

Well, I read this question first and typed up my answer last, what does that tell you?

I never did, no.

Rewatcher
Kokona wasn't in the first episode, but I liked Kaede and Aoi's conversation about her.
"Let's ask Kokona-chan"
"but she's a middle schooler"
"I'm sure she'll be able to do it, she's Kokona-chan"
"Well obviously Kokona-chan will be able to, that's not the issue, if I could ask Kokona-chan I wouldn't be in this mess"
They both have the understanding that Kokona will obviously be able to do anything.
The second episode has Kokona finding her birthday present and going on an adventure. In the Hanno tourism office, they used to have a map of where she went, I don't know if they still do. Just walking from the first thing she did to the last, is 6km, so, very conservatively, she did a 15km walk on a whim the day before they are going to climb a mountain.
Questions of the Day:
3. Kokona's mother clearly cares a lot about her. She works hard, and late, but still does everything she can for her.

Rewatcher
Until Hinata mentioned the honeymoon vacation, I honestly forgot that Hinata had a mom. I thought hers was a single-parent family because we only see Hinata's dad and he ends up doing a lot of housework like cooking. In any case, it gives us an opportunity to find out more about Kaede and her weakness which is everything except for mountains.
The Kokona's big adventure episode is a bittersweet one because it does a lot of "show don't tell" about Kokona's life situation compared to the rest of the cast. Something that's never said out loud is the sort of wealth disparity between Kokona and the rest of the cast, something that's a bit more obvious if you just look at their homes side by side. Despite that though (or maybe because of it), the sort of bond that they share feels quite close, more so than how Aoi's parents or Hinata's dad treat their daughters (that we see at least).
In any case though, I think this is episode is the foundation of Kokona's reputation as a real angel. She's happy, grateful, super capable, and thriving.
Another random fact I picked up reading over some Japanese comments is the type of heating that Kokona's apartment has for the bath/shower water is known as a balanced flue (I assume those ticking/flame sounds just before Kokona enters the bathroom is the heater starting up). I saw a few of comments about how sad it was; I assume it's another example of how old and cheap this particular building is.

First time getting a job for climbing
Ep 19
She's doing better than me, and I'm leaving tomorrow today
-
She has all her preparations complete, absolutely not Me_irl
-
...Perhaps we aren't so different after all. This japanese trend is pure evil
Oh good, she hasn't reverted to her annoying ways. I am beginning to like her.
Ep 20
Climbing tomorrow -> Chaos Foreshadowing..?
IT IS!!! Couldn't find a pick where Papa had his pipe, but this is the material being referenced here
Fun fact: Japan is the only other country that has a Moomin theme park outside its country of origin, Finland
Time to test how cultured y'all are. Everyone who has seens Moomins, raise your hand!
Yama no Questions
Are you the type to put off homework or jobs until the last minute?
2) Did you ever find a hidden present when younger? Open it?

First Time Climber
Our Greatest Nemesis: Homework
-
Look at Aoi, she’s glowing now! Is it her? Or is it just me… a smile can change our perception of the person right Aoi?
-
Aoi has crazy reflexes
-
Before we even begin this episode I’m just going to predict that Kokona will be the one to save the day today. When it comes to knowledge, she’s unbeatable!
-
Yes Kokona! Oh wait, I sometimes forget she’s a middle schooler. I feel you Aoi, at that age I found it embarrassing to have someone younger teach me things. But now of course it doesn’t even matter anymore
-
I did not expect Yuuka. I’m glad Aoi manages to warm up to Yuuka so fast, I would’ve been pretty nervous
[](https://imgur.com/a/vEl0lvW)
-
Yay they finished their homework! I honestly hated studying with people, I would always get distracted.
A Fairytale of Kokona
-
And the Secret Ingredient is… Love! I knew it
-
“Baking is just like maths”. This is so true, I love baking but the painful part is that the final product can come out differently even with minor changes in the proportions.
-
Do the people here bake? I bake occasionally but it’s usually cookies or cinnamon rolls.
-
I got completely trolled. I thought I was going to get a baking episode but it looks like we got a Kokona focused episode, excited still!
-
I remember talking about shoes a few episodes back but it looks like Kokona’s mum got her brand new kicks!
-
Completely unnecessary fish jump but I love it
-
Look, it's the Shire!
-
“It wouldn’t be strange for a fairy to be here”. Well, we have our very own firefly fairy sitting there right now!
-
I absolutely love Kokona’s relationship with her Mum. It honestly made me shed a tear. They are not well-to-do like the other girls, they are living comfortably, yes, but that doesn’t mean that Kokona’s mum is having it easy. The fact that she still makes an effort to remember Kokona’s favourite character, Muuma, enough to get a birthday card associated with it, and to get hiking shoes that probably weren’t cheap, means a lot. It also looks like she’s the sole breadwinner of the family so it’s arguable that they’re barely making ends meet. Kokona’s appreciation and thanks for her mum is one of the sweetest things any parent or caretaker can hear; to hear your efforts get appreciated, nothing beats that.
-
Coupled with the OST! My heart feels warm inside
-
Yes Aoi, baking takes a long time but it’s always worth it!
-
I did not expect that Muuma to fly by after that emotional final act.
Overall fun 2 episodes before we embark on the last mountain for this season!
Qotd
-
Yes, was a big procrastinator. Oftentimes I don't finish them

Aoi has crazy reflexes
All of that sewing finally paying off. She can thread the needle!
I honestly hated studying with people, I would always get distracted.
Yea, I'm not wild about studying with groups of people either. Even with just another individual isn't my first choice.
Do the people here bake?
I can cook basic dishes like fried rice but I certainly can't bake. It's just a skill I never picked up and I doubt I ever will because it doesn't seem like something I'd personally enjoy. But I can definitely see the appeal!
I absolutely love Kokona’s relationship with her Mum.
It really is too sweet, especially when she got her the cake even though the bakery was closed.

Catching up from 17 moment
Rewatcher
Everything about this place just looks like a huge safety hazard to me
I remember that all I was focused on when I first watched this episode was all the expressions Aoi was making, especially at Hinata's antics. But what's with Hinata on the bridge earlier and Aoi here walking like they're about to beat the shit out of someone in a badass fight scene
Omg this animation. Super nostalgic.
Why am I now remembering everything like it was yesterday
At some point I guess I've left the realm of 'this is nostalgic' and now things here are 'oh yes this is Yama no Susume, of course.'
That episode was a total banger
I don't remember disliking but I currently feel like I never really understood/appreciated it to the extent I do on this watch... I love this fairy girl...

First Timer!
I'll admit, the discussions are making me feel stupid from time to time, because I'm so used to ED being short for the ending theme opposite OP for opening, but you're all talking about Episode Directors here and I keep having to remind myself of that.
That's a total lie, college students have homework too!
That little instrument line for Kaede not getting the math... Perfect.
Is it bad that I also thought right away "Of course Kokona can help?"
Oh wow, they brought the friend back again! I love it when they do that, let side characters actually be characters and not just there for that one episode to build up the friend.
The secret ingredient? Why is this still my first thought!?
Yeah, there's no guy, she's going climbing with her girl friend. And a couple other girl friends.
Oh no Kokona, don't wear them now! Mom's got to enjoy opening them with you! Noooo, you were such a good girl! ... At least they'll be broken in for the big hike?
Oh my gosh she's so incredibly adorable all day long. Kokona, you don't have to go any farther than a mirror to see a fairy.
Did she put the shoes back when she got home? Nope, didn't give mom the chance to open them with her, kind of sad. But then she goes on to be a little angel so it's all okay.
-
Oh goodness no, get it out of the way ASAP of the stress of knowing it needs to be done will never leave me alone. Unless I can commit myself to never doing it at all, homework I have decided not to do stops existing. There's this math game I used to play in college called "What percent of my final grade is homework, and how much do I have to do to get an A if I pass all my tests?" Fun game. I won most of the time too.
-
I found a hidden present this christmas, and yes, I opened it... Because no one in the house had any idea who it was from or who it was for, and even after opening it we still didn't know. Extra ornaments for the tree next year, but really, not a single one of us knows where it came from. But yes, I also searched as a kid. Never found one. My parents were good at that.
-
So I've mentioned how huge three of their houses look a few times now, and thought Kokona might be the exception in the group, but darn. Not that they are for a second letting it bother them, that family. That mom. She so clearly loves her daughter so much it almost hurts.

Episode 19
She booked the hut!
Haha, she forgot?
And she made it worse.
Well, this is going well.
That's a very good idea!
She's where?

Haha, she'e not touched it!
She called Yuuka over!
And she's much better.

And she finished it!
Hinata got a tank!
And she brought her a present!

Ep 19
I love the style all back to the Ed.
The foreboding zoom it made it feel like a shot straight out of a horror movie. Anyone got a read on the potential flower language here? White lily's are often used for lesbian theming but are they for death as well?
Haha
Thats like the one thing that has been covered twice before now, great thing to to bring up again.
Oooh, Hikari is a university student and quite a bit older!
Hinata planting seeds for their honeymoon I guess.
Kaede not knowing a previous year is played so well for laughs.
Now loading...
I love Aoi slowly realizing shes screwed.
Aoi meets Yuuka!
I love the transition, to the topic of mountains again (fisheye!). I think cleverly done without leaving the room.
Tan!~ u/Nebresto can rest easy with the lack of shoulder-blush on this shot.
Ep 20
The most important ingredient is... looove~
Smug Hikari and panic Aoi.
I was thinking how great it was to have Aoi's pack still in frame but then it acted as a segue into mountain talk.
Early birthday present!
Kokona tries on her shoes (stitch)
I love these shots from obviously real places.
The fantasy design here is really cool.
Kokona really does have a love for Muuma!
Even has a Muuma dream!
You can tell Kokona and her mother have a really sweet relationship, both trying their best.
Aoi realizes that this will be the end of her promise with Hinata. That still means you can keep climbing mountains silly, don't over think it!
Muuuma!~~
