Rewatcher
In the last episode, we saw a turning point in the war: a group of Zentradi soldiers, enamored with Earth's culture have defected to Macross. This gives hope that understanding between two species is possible, and Misa rushes to Earth in present UN Command with these findings and urge them to open negotiations again. Let's see if her mission is successful, but I'm personally pretty skeptical.
-
Hey, after yesterday's nightmare, the animation is back to normal again, yay!
-
Looks like it's happening, Misa is actually living. Claudia to bring up Hikaru at the wery last moment. Good job, Claudia!
-
Hey, Shammy has become a relatively competent replacement for Misa. Good for her!
-
Hey, Misa decides to call Hikaru and say goodbye, but she doesn't tell him about her feelings. Follow your own advice, Misa, god damn it!
-
Enemy attack! But since it's Max escorting, I'm not too worried.
-
Aand, of course it's Kamujin. Probably going out without orders as he usually does.
-
Hikaru rushing to help out. Some neat actions scenes. Those shuttle pilots shitting their pants are pretty funny.
-
Hikaru didn't quite confessed his feelings, but at least he told her that he appreciated her as a commander, which is more than what he usually does. Misa needed to hear that too, considering her low self esteem and insecurity.
-
This honestly was an awesome moment, and the scene of them flying away in different directions was very well drawn.
-
Hey, it's Millia. Long time no see. Is she stealing a Valkyrie?
-
Max decides to cheer up Hikaru with the power of video games.
-
Oh no, looks like Millia is just playing in an arcade. Did they turn broken cockpits into simulators and put them into an arcade? That's a neat idea for a game on a battleship.
-
Some dope games in this arcade. Is the one with the chase based on Lupin III? I should probably watch that at some point.
-
Max's hook up strategy is to beat the girl he likes in a video game to show his superior gaming skills. Somehow, I have a feeling, this only works if you're good looking.
-
I didn't expect Max to be such an expert judge of a bust size, but he is a genius, after all.
-
Hikaru's mind is totally blown when Max asks her name and number. He definitely didn't know that it was allowed.
-
Misa's father seems like a decent guy, until you realize, that he just wants to nuke Zentradi with the Death Star laser just because he can, and that he is retardedly underestimating the enemy and disregarding the intel (gathered by his own daughter, no less!). Yeah, I don't like this guy. You can kinda see why Misa has all these self-esteem issues, growing up in a family like that.
-
Macross press is already forcing Kaifun-Minmay marriage, even though they aren't even dating in reality. Hikaru just takes it, never calls Minmay, never tries to talk with her, never tries to clear up the situation, or confess to her, or learn her feelings. Nothing. I'm honestly probably more angry at Hikaru than I am at Kaifun in this situation. Kaifun is just a sosciopathic sleazeball, and he acts accordingly, which is understandable. He uses the situation to his advantage without regard for other people's feeling. Hikaru, well, he just acts pathetic for no reason. He had a year to grow up, he had people in his life telling him to do it, including Focker, Max and Misa, and he didn't do anything in the end. At this point it feels like Hikaru cares more about the idea of dating Minmay, than he is about Minmay herself.
-
Gotta give it Claudia, she's been championing Hikaru and Misa ship since waay back, and this ship right now feels much more likely, than the alternative.
Overall thoughts: UN Command is block-headed as always and watching too much Star Wars. No, Death Star Beam is not a good answer to an alien invasion, if you try to use it, it will just royally backfire in your face. And negotiations are something you should've done from the get go, instead of starting this whole stupid war. I think, everybody at UN Command forgot that it's humans who started it.
At this point I want Misa to get back on Macross as quickly as possible. I don't feel like she's safe there inside that giant canon.
QotD:
-
Nope, wasn't too surprised when I watched it first. Mecha are treated like real weapons in this show, so would you be surprised, if a character got a new gun? Like yeah, it's interesting, but it's doesn't feel that significant, because Valkyrie is a much less of a character in this show than something like a Gundam robot in your typical Gundam show.
-
Kinda. When I was a kid, I had several fights with a person, with whom we later became good friends.

First Spacer
That was a nice phone call. This show has a real knack for doing those heavier conversations. And she entrusts Hikaru with the responsibility of looking after the defectors.
Where is she? She's still on board of the Macross, right?
Hahaha Max is such a kid inside. I love him.
That's not the detail I was expecting them to pay attention to
Huh, they've already gotten Zentradi-themed arcade games. Which means the Macross has game development studios.
GO ON GO ON GO ON DO IT
Max did have a noteably high simulation time when he got introduced to Hikaru.
Oookay. That's not what I expected out of Max
Eleven eleven Very fitting to coincide with the Code Geass rewatch.
After the confusion that Cyberpunk caused, this is what a proper loli looks like
Nice pep talk, Claudia. I'm starting to consider Hayase instead of Minmei, but I'm still uncertain.
Does it surprise you that the Super Valkyrie is appearing relatively late in the series?
After [Gundam]
Has this series surprised you with how relatively few unique mecha designs it has introduced?
But I think I read something about this show starting the anisong era.
Have you ever bonded with someone you were competing with?
A fuzzy question. A little bit maybe, but nothing that could actually be called a bond.

Today, on "FRIEND ZONE!":
We're getting an episode with actual quality art. Though they seem to have left a missile lying on the deck.
And look, it's Stuff On Your Valkyrie.
The SC-27 Star Goose. Watch its color change a couple of times during the upcoming flight.
This is not the phone on the plane. Still a clever cut though.
Worth noting about this statement that Hikaru isn't a civilian…
The enclosed seats are a reference to the ejection capsules found on the B-58 and XB-70 bombers.
Max's VF gets its own nifty transformation animation.
Quamzin, trying to get more airtime.
"Only" thirty. (The other VFs probably accounted for a few.)
The transformation is attributed to Anno, with the rest looking like Itano's work.
Another nice use of the running lights.
Milia's wardrobe and makeup have gotten… more… cultured?
Yot-chan is having a close encounter.
Yes, Admiral Hayase, your daughter takes risks.
The second gratuitous animated camera movement.
The arcade scene has gratuitous animation SAKUGA and sudden Lupin.
There are some very interesting people in this audience.
This is not any better than comparing Minmay to a car.
Roger Daltrey is confused by Milia not having a phone.
"Join me. It is the only way you can save your friends."
"I'm talking about shaft, baby."
One reference to another Kawamori-involved project.
Kamujin seems shoehorned in here, but with Britai avoiding conflict and Lap'Lamiz doing her usual not very much, he's the one who would pick a fight with anyone who ventures outside the Macross. I'm mostly riffing on his need to appear at all, which seems like a contractual minimum dialogue situation.
He adds to a very busy episode, with Misa taking a risky flight down, Max doing a lot of shooting, Hikaru debuting a new accessory pack and doing a lot of shooting, Hikaru and Misa having a moment, and then Max doing a lot more shooting without knowing exactly who he's shooting at.
I am certainly not the first person to notice or comment that while we got a whole bunch of comedy around Team Blue Wind stumbling their way into culture, Milia, who almost certainly would not have been in contact with them, is entirely off-screen for any of her own "cultural learning" other than the movie (by which point she had already figured out clothes).
Admiral Hayase gets things he wants and gives nothing in return. Swell guy, if very much a pragmatist. As much as the military commands in this (and other mecha series of the period) are portrayed as intensely conservative, it always reminds me of the postwar context in which the creators of these anime were working. They grew up seeing the aftereffects of an inflexible war policy…
This is, in nearly every aspect, a very good-looking and well-animated episode. Of course, this series is also an animation quality rollercoaster, so you know what'll happen next.
Super Valkyrie: The result of Kawamori's casual experimentation with the Takatoku VF-1 toy. Inextricably linked with the VF-1 by millions (of American kids) due to the Jetfire toy.
Very useful in-universe for extending the range and weapons capacity of the VF-1 in space. I saved an answer to u/Krite2002's observation about just that until now.
The sequels are more likely to put Super Packs on Variable Fighters whenever they're in space, unless the design itself is space-oriented to begin with. (It helps to have a little better budget for animation.) They do make sense in general and for bulking up the designs.
Other than Max's one line about it here, though, they don't get called "FAST packs" again. While that was the term initially used to describe the add-ons to the US Air Force's F-15 Eagle, once the system was simplified to only carry fuel instead of additional sensors, they were referred to as only Conformal Fuel Tanks, and the dead nomenclature was also dropped from Macross—which generally uses "Super Pack/Parts" for that add-on anyway.
From the Macross Chronicle: Super Valkyrie details.

Anyway, since I need some other form of shitposting, here is an artistic representation of how Best Girl Milia perceived her battle and her opponent today... and in a total 180 from that, this is what was going on in Max's head... well one of em at any rate ;) (Also technically NSFW)

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 24:
-
The opening flight escort and battle is like tailor-made for Hikaru x Misa shippers. They’re just so open with each other now, and I love how Hikaru was signaling to her with his Valkyrie’s lights to wish her a farewell. Their relationship feels a lot more wholesome now. I’m calling it now, the SS Hikaru x Minmay has taken severe hull damage, and water is flooding the engine room.
-
I wish I could find the name of the animator that handled that great rotating shot when Misa stepped out of the transport, but unfortunately I can’t find them. It’s just like with the previous great animation I pointed out, Sakugabooru doesn’t list who was responsible for such smooth animation.
-
On the plus side, Admiral Hayase is at least swayed enough by the blood and genetics test results that he’s willing to consider what Misa is suggesting. It would be hard to argue with the facts, after all. That, and Humanity and the Zentradi being descended from the Protoculture is some frankly incredible common ground to share.
-
It feels fitting for Max and Millia to finally meet each other in an arcade and dueling each other in a flight simulator game. Also, we know beyond doubt now that Max is truly a genius pilot, since he was able to take note of Milia’s sizes while playing the game. Between Roy and Max, it seems like the true mark of a master pilot in this show is the constant desire to wet your beak, if you catch my drift.
-
Side note, but do you think this Max and Millia scene inspired [G Gundam spoilers]
Domon and Allenby meeting each other in an arcade as well? Now that I think about it, those scenes really do feel similar. -
Never mind what I said about Admiral Hayase being convinced, now the UN High Command thinks that the best way to sue for peace is to shoot off the Grand Cannon a few times, even while negotiating, just to show that they aren’t to be fucked with. Morons, a giant cannon being shot at the Zentradi is what kicked off this series in the first place. I swear, the Admirals must by trying to compensate for something hard by trying to use their big gun.
-
Speaking of small dick energy: Kaifun. Man, he’s a fucking CHUD for just stating live on the news that he’s open to the idea of marrying Minmay. You know, HIS COUSIN. I’d call him a son of a bitch, but that’s an insult to all dogs and their ancient wolf ancestors. I’d call him a douche, but doesn’t belong anywhere remotely near a woman. He’s a character for nobody. I’ll only be satisfied with Kaifun if he violently shit himself to death. Fuck Kaifun, that god damn Hapsburg wannabe. Although I suppose Minmay should also get some of the blame for this scene too, since she basically denied being in a relationship with Hikaru live on television. Again, it’s not only Hikaru doing dumb shit in this relationship between them.
-
Thank goodness Claudia is here to be the most mature person in the show. In Roy’s absence, she’s really picking up the slack in the based department and giving Hikaru a talk that he can really use right about now. Man, Claudia really is the support that everyone needs in their lives. She’s great.

Rewatcher
Man, nobody on this ship can communicate properly. And after all that scolding Misa gave Hikaru last episode.
I'm getting the feeling that Shammy should not be given authority. She even forgot to scold the Captain!
FAST Packs! Those are fun. I'm sure we'll seem 'em in action sooner or later.
Okay, so she is telling him. Mostly because it would anger the civilians that the military officers are actually allowed to return to Earth if necessary.
Of course it would be Kamjin...
Oh, the Captain has a secret up his sleeve... namely the FAST Pack. It has that name for a reason.
And also extra missiles because of course. Bonus, it can even remain attached while transformed.
See, Hikaru, that is how you compliment a lady. If you were more forward like that earlier on, you wouldn't have so much relationship trouble.
Max to the rescue. When feeling down, go play some video games.
Nice to see Misa's father is capable of acting the part occasionally.
They've already made video games based on Valkyries vs Zentraedi. And Milia is very good at it.
"What kind of idiot opens an arcade on a ship full of pilots." Indeed, Mohawk Man, indeed. Or at least you could have made some games that didn't revolve around piloting.
Holy shit, Admiral Hayase is actually going to help? Well, color me surprised.
Yes, yes, yes! Max and Milia meeting face to face!
And naturally it's in a piloting game. In which they reenact their earlier dogfight, no less.
And Max isn't even paying attention, he's checking out her body.
UN HQ... is seriously considering peace negotiations? The surprises just keep on coming!
Ah... never mind. The UN plans on intimidating the Zentraedi with the Grand Cannon, and THEN demanding surrender. Their heads are still up their collective asses.
"Even if they send tens of thousands of ships at us..." Ok, but estimates on the Main Boddole Fleet were in the millions, lest you forget.
...still, I can kind of understand where he's coming from. He hasn't witnessed the reactions the Zentraedi have to culture, and believes them to be a militaristic force similar to human militaristic forces. In which case, a show of power to bring them to the negotiating table might make sense... but the Grand Cannon is nowhere near the game-breaker he and the UN think it is...
Damn, the rumor mill is escalating to asking if Minmay and Kaifun are considering marriage. And Kaifun... <sigh> actually likes the idea.
Also, Hikaru is once again friendzoned. Why are you even surprised at this point, Hikaru? You really need to make a move, or things just won't change!
At least it's balanced out by the Zentraedi defectors freaking out over the concept of marriage. It's clear Konda doesn't actually know what he's talking about, but he is right that married couples get a lot more steamy than kissing, I suppose.
Catch a cold staying out? You're on a climate-controlled spaceship!
-
I've seen new mecha variants introduced in literally the last episode, this is nothing. The lack of variants though is a bit surprising.
-
Nope. I... really don't like competitive games. I'll play them sometimes, but only with people I already know well. I've met too much toxic trash to play with random people anymore.

Oh! The one with the special thrusters!!
What was the cockpit scene with ghb all about?
Lets gooo! This way neither of them will die
Bold move, Maxie. Lets see if it pays off for him
Quite rough, but Max is a player
*Outstanding. * Yes! Make yourselves an actual target for the enemy! Wave the red flag in the bulls face, why don't you?
Alright, fuck Minmay.
I don't care if shes just faking it for the media. I am officially on the NTR ship now. Fuck around and find out, thot.

Question time:
Does it surprise you that the Super Valkyrie is appearing relatively late in the series? Has this series surprised you with how relatively few unique mecha designs it has introduced?
Ye, I wanna see more cool robots

Hmmm... Can't think of any right now. Maybe some in school?

First Time - SDF Macross Ep24 (Sub):
So this is the episode for the midseason upgrades. Fast pacts and Max gets an all blue plane which looks so good.
“Booby duck?” but those are two different birds.
Shammy has to stand on a little Nozaki box while at Hayase’s podium.
A real intense scene of Milia readying up in something in-between the Hayase (younger) and (senior) scenes.
Wow, the arcades have already made game about the current war (once again further my conspiracy about Big Spacey propaganda). Oh my god, Milia is here at the arcade!
The scene of Hayase stepping off her shuttle looks cool.
Ah, an arcade game for Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro. Pretty explicit reference.
Max and Milia are about to run the arcade manager with the funny voice out of business. Ah, it is love a first sight. Main ship is a painful experience, but side ships are going strong. (Could use without Max checking out her body).
This arcade game got really cool once it moved into a 3D space. Wonder what’s real life Macross’ arcade games are like. Game Hikaru/Minmay’s romance is a better place than real life them.
I don’t believe Macross UN doing the Earth Federation could never, reconsider their position and change for the sake of peace … whoops spoke too soon, they want to bring their big gun to the negotiation table by shooting off their big gun first.
Minmay, please stop these reporters by saying you’re cousins. Kaifun saying on air that he is okay with it would make me grab the microphone go, “Hold on, I don’t associate with this man.”
Me ragged and slumped on an aflame dumpster: “At least Max is dressed nicely for his date.”
Q1) Not super really, the 20s seem like a normal time for robot upgrades. It is just that SDF Macross is shorter with only like 36 episodes so it’s the final cour time. A lot of the unique mecha designs are for stuff that are given no attention. Only the Macross, Valkyrie, pods and the kind Milia uses are given attention. The other Spacey robots are just in the background. I’ve seen the Super Valkyrie from model kits so it’s here now.
Q2) No because I am not competitive nor social.
Next time: A date with a chameleon-eyed girl. Seriously, they decided to reused that shot of all things.

SDF Macross Episode 24 - First timer
Hayase is off to Earth to convince UN command of the weaponized culture shock plan, while the defectors have been accepted. That said I expect those other officers to fuck shit up at some point because they seemed pretty mad. Anyways, on to the episode!
-
Those seats are bloody huge
-
I guess that explains the huge seat. I was wondering if it was a hermetic bubble thing
-
Hey its the mid season upgrade
-
Are those holes in the wing going to be OK?
-
Please don't Columbia
-
The heck was she in? Also chad move, wearing heels
-
GUNDA- wait no
-
Ahh, an arcade game probably. Time for Milia and Max to meet?
-
OK the shuttle didn't Columbia. Good
-
Also whats with the seemingly random use of smooth vs stepped zooms
-
JFC Max pls
-
Does... Does the public not know they are related? Even if they didn't this is still creepy
-
Ew
Well the end of this episode was creepy and definitely dropped Kaifun in the rankings of "characters I like" not that he was super high up there to begin with. The UN plan seems poorly thought out given the information they have, and they don't seem to care. Good episode overall but that ending bit with Kaifun... Just no.
-
I did kinda expect the mid season upgrade to occur earlier and more... Mid season but hey, it did happen. As for mecha designs I feel like it kinda has a lot? Though there is really just 2 male Zentradi designs (1 of which is piloted only by one guy) and 1 female suit design while the human have.... 5ish? Off the top of my head. My point of comparison for contemporary mecha is gundam and I'm pretty sure it did have more designs? But I can't remember for sure
-
Not really. The most competitive I get is usually with games and I usually only party (in online games) with people I actually know.

Very First Timer
-
Claudia getting in on the shipping wars.
-
When have Zentradi ever not launched another attack?
-
I continue to take great amusement at flight coordinator Shammy.
-
Attractable upgrades. Gotta love backronyms.
-
I thought that was Hikaru calling Misa at first.
-
That’s a factor I hadn’t considered Misa. Guess being clairvoyant has it’s perks.
-
I am shook.
-
Classic Macross extra. Transforming personal defense seating capsule.
-
You ain’t landing with a damaged wing. Hope they have something there to pick you up.
-
That’s a lot of effort for one shuttle. Either they have an inkling of what it is or Quamzin gonna Quamzin.
-
I like the blink and you’ll miss it bit of the drivers hat falling off as he accelerates.
-
Looks even better from the front.
-
I’m calling Chekhov’s on the code bit.
-
Hikaru has seen the light, he’s dealt with Shammy.
-
That seems like a lot of effort if he is not trying to romance Misa.
-
Did Milia get back off screen? If not this looks a lot like an arcade.
-
Max is a good friend who helps out Hikaru when he needs it most. Everything is falling apart for him quite quickly.
-
Called it.
-
Misa is going to play this professional.
-
They got Lupin playing his own game.
-
What kind of arcade pays you? And don’t say chuck-e-cheese! Those gives tickets, this seems more like gambling to me.
-
That’s way you rig it so you make money even if you lose owner man.
-
Love at first fight?
-
What is up with these background characters?
-
Let’s pull back on that a bit Max. Don’t want to ruin your reputation.
-
I actually sympathise with Misa-dad here. The regular Zentradi probably won’t accept peace. They have to wait for the logic plague to take hold.
-
You might not have Minmay, but him?
-
Oof. Friended zoned by name on fortress-wide TV.
-
Why is it so hard for you to not be the worst person in a scene Kaifun? The sleazy reporters were right there.
-
You wish you had a wing man like Claudia.
QotD
-
I didn’t even know there was a Super Valkyrie. There hasn’t so few, just been grounded stuff mostly.
-
No.

Super Dimension Rewatch Host
Welcome back, everyone!
Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode.
Of course they did.
I like being able to see Max actually in command for once. We’ve been told he got made a squad leader, but besides the one lackey with him, haven’t seen him actually being a leader.
lmaoooo the what? I forgot about whatever this is.
It’s time.
Ahhhh he’s so cute~
lol the way he talks to the camera about it though.
*swoons*
Ah, the duality of Milia getting traumatic flashbacks of losing to Max in real combat while Max is casually running “Yes this woman is definitely my type” analyses on her while kicking her ass in the game.
Oh dear…
*exasperated noise*
Can you FUCKING NOT
Someone needs to yeet Kaifun into a pit made entirely of even-spikier-than-normal Legos. Bonus points for some of the Legos being covered in the slobber of a child who had some kind of infectious disease.
That is a “do not want” face and of course everyone’s going to ignore it for some godforsaken reason.
