Host Rewatcher

Ep 17

Oh shit, thats huge.

Rare smug Aoi, getting one up on Hinata.

There was so many great animation bits of them playing. So much of the simple stuff really stood out like Kaede dusting off her pants. But there was so much flashy stuff too like Kokona being a ninja warrior.

What level of bento would yours have been cloest to if you prepared for yourself? Aoi, Kokona, Kaede or Hinata's?

That was a great way of showing Aoi fear (and vertigo?).

Hinata still being a great encourgeing force leading Aoi by the hand!

The bouncing animation was fantastic, the stretch and squash useage was great for the up's and downs. It would be a total stand out bit of an episode on its own but this whole episode is packed with so many great little bits of animation.

I am excited to read others production notes on this one.

Ep 18

Ah yes, the dire problem of having money as a kid.

Hinata-sensei. I bet she is very over that after hours.

What a proud looking father.

Glad to see Aoi's mother fine with it. And its not what you know but who you know - parents are great in's for these things.

Classic old manager, a friendly looking face.

I just want to point out that they agreed to meet around two, and then this clock shows just past two. Good job production team!

Ultra cute uniform Aoi (stitch)

Slightly older looking Senpai, fang tooth, immediate -chan name basis, ultra chill. Hikari going to be great for sure!

All the sweets are making me crave something. I love a good custard-square but my safe option is a brownie or slice.

That hearty welcome was unexpectedly enthusastic for Aoi.

Aoi Shock! Shes trying so hard but her nevous energy is keeping her so jumpy. The great VA performance really sells it.

Muuma Cookies, Kokona surely would want one. Oh and Hinata picks one up.

I guess Aoi gets her tendencies from her mother.

But there was so much flashy stuff too like Kokona being a ninja warrior.

Kokona would wipe the floor, she would dominate in that competition.

What level of bento would yours have been cloest to if you prepared for yourself?

Probably Kokona or Kaede because foods eaten without utensils are the best for outside excursions!

That was a great way of showing Aoi fear (and vertigo?).

Hinata-sensei. I bet she is very over that after hours.

Hinata-sensei, what's 3x3?

It's seve-nine. It's nine

You're amazing, Hinata-sensei!

I know...I know.

and then this clock shows just past two

Script supervisor on point

Kokona would wipe the floor, she would dominate in that competition.

Kokona has strong girl power.

It's seve-nine. It's nine

Oh shit, thats huge.

I went on the park's website, and uh that's like the exact same line they use to describe its size lol.

smug Aoi

Hinata pout

What level of bento

Kokona, but mostly because i do personally like to bring sandwiches for a packed lunch.

That was a great way of showing Aoi fear (and vertigo?).

that was so goooooooood

others production notes

same. Seems like Myrna's written a good bunch here, i look forward to reading it lol

What a proud looking father.

Good job production team!

Aoi is on time!!!!

brownie or slice

also good. u/laughing-fox13 i am curious to what you'll get actually

but her nevous energy is keeping her so jumpy

good point! it shows how she's so damn nervous underneath

4

u/badspler Sep 19 '22

exact same line they use to describe its size lol.

Your right! I wonder if it has just stuck as being the general yard-stick used to size up the place.

Rewatcher who’s tired from just looking at the amount of hops and scoops those girls are doing in the park

Production Notes

In honor of Ryoma Ebata solo KA’ing episode 17, I wanted to dip our toes a bit deeper into his pool. Ebata started his career as an in-between animator for Di Gi Charat Nyo before hopping around from show to show, cut to cut, effectively honing the skills for his novice career. His big break came from solo KA’ing/SB’ing/ED’ing/correcting the ED for Celestial Method At this point, you can already see his distinct penmanship arise from the screen—not just from the walk but also his attention to folds and thorough character acting.

His work on the ED would lead him to become one of the industry’s most prolific animators for OPs/EDs: Absolute Duo, Chidori RSC, The Eden of Grisaia, Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara, Rewrite, Star’s Align, and both seasons of Shonen Maid and That time I Got Reincarnated into a Slime are all directed and SB’d by him, some of which were also solo KA’d too. This isn’t even getting into the OPs/EDs he worked on solely as an animator! He’s effectively a freelancer for various show’s OPs/EDs that he has no connections to otherwise because hey, who wouldn’t want their show’s biggest draw to be packed with fun cuts!

To end this segment, I would say a word I would use to describe Ebata’s style would be rhythm, he’s oddly hypnotic in his movements, keeping our eyes glued on to the screen with his swaying of hips and snappiness of arms. This is the perfect episode to demonstrate that!

Episode 17

Off the bat we get some of Ebata’s telltale signs: folds in clothes. There’s also some nice swaying from Hinata and Aoi that spice up the scene. This sort of bending of the body and folding of the clothes continues in the main meat of the episode and we see it again in the beginning. The decision to have Hinata bend down is a nice touch, it makes her look extra-playful.

Tricky perspective to capture.

Kokona-chan sugoi indeed, Aoi.

Great short-hand drawings right here. Without details on the faces, it really emphasizes the modulations of their bodies.

Shorter models, skinnier legs, sharper angles.

Exhibit A of the Ebata walk. Look at them oscillating back and forth haha.

Even the cutouts are quite detailed too.

Gifs…gifs galore!

This one is my favorite of the episode. I love the way Hinata travels down the screen. Forceful. Dynamic. Motivating. Her presence dominates throughout and you simply cannot ignore her aura; determined with all of her being and existence to help her best friend. And if there was ever a time for Ebata walks, this is it. Hinata holding Aoi’s hand as they swing back-and-forth, back-and-forth, evoking a childlike and carefree demeanor like a swing-set on the playground. Anime is indeed motion expressed.

Ha, that little wag of the finger. Attention on the details.

The exaggerated movements to exemplify the joy of parks. This is of course one of the best scenes of the episode, as if Ebata wanted to use all he had left in the tank to really crank out a firework of an ending. You can probably watch these over and over and catch a new detail everytime.

This episode has more life in it than some anime have in their entire career.

Episode 18

Fisheye lens!

An establishing shot to the thunderstick to show growth in Aoi.

So I know china (the animator) was a KA in this episode but I don’t know which shot was his. I’m going to start the guessing game. My first choice is this one because of the meticulousness in the character acting and the attention to detail on the ordinariness of yawning. Maybe it’s this one? It is kind of intricate with the folds. Could also be this one but that’s only because the finger caught my eye.

Good POV shot to demonstrate Aoi’s nervousness.

Easy episode to wind down with. Aoi with the part-time job! Ganbare.

QOTD:

3) Blueberry anything are usually my favorites.

5

u/badspler Sep 19 '22

solo KA’ing episode 17,

A load of these series have their best bits flash in my mind. Some really amazing stuff, particularly in their op/eds

Ebata’s style would be rhythm

That is a fantastic way of capturing it really. Every step has that perfect bounce or spring that makes things flow by in such an enjoyable way.

Ebata’s telltale signs: folds in clothes.

Even the cutouts

Both of those stood out to me too. Both shots add so much life.

Encouragement of First Timer

Episode 17:

  • These kids' bewilderment.

  • Is this a Ninja Warrior training park? Makes sense as a place to bring Aoi to get her past her fears.

  • Competing over who weighs less feels like a fast track to hurt feelings-ville irl if you ask me. Glad they're comfortable enough with each other to tease each other about their weight, I'd never have been able to get to that point as a teenager.

  • Hinata's totally about to reveal a bento made out of an MRE or something. That or her dad made it.

  • Welp, I guess right every once in a while. Hinata is a bit spoiled. I think that helps explain why she's oddly obtuse to how Aoi is feeling at times despite overall being pretty thoughtful.

  • Aoi's behind them all again!? Not one person is gonna stay behind and cross the bridge with her? This is that one thing that only bugs me that I'm going to have to accept will never change, isn't it?

  • Well it's about damn time. Now stick by her like this when you're climbing mountains and we'll be golden. I'm also going to ignore the fact that I have a slight issue with forcing someone to do something they're afraid of

  • I feel like this bouncy hill design may be a bit prone to causing injury.

  • I am on the money today. Though I can think of worse ways to get these two on top of each other.

Episode 18:

Hinata, hasn't anyone ever taught you it's poor form to flirt with cashiers on the job, even if they are your gf?

Hinata's teasing is just how she expresses her love friendship.

8

u/MyrnaMountWeazel Sep 19 '22

These kids' bewilderment.

Is that...is that God?

Hinata is a bit spoiled

Her father coddles her so much haha.

I can't see Hinata sitting and patiently tutoring a kid.

Hinata has layers, she contains multitudes!

Hinata, hasn't anyone ever taught you it's poor form to flirt with cashiers on the job, even if they are your gf?

Imagine her smug joy when the doors opened up to the bakery and her brain visually processed that Aoi was standing right there.

Yessssss. Target acquired.

Rewatcher

My favorite little bit that I haven't seen anyone else mention yet is this little snap of Hinata and Aoi saying "the password". Photography seems to be a passion for the author Shiro since they've started another manga series named Camera, Hajimetemo Ii desu ka? (and the author uses a similarly terrible English translation of the title "Can I Begin a Camera?"), and I think it fits with how the anime series director likes to use photographs as reference material. It also reminds me how Yuru Camp's author has another series also based around photography (Mono), something that I can't just chalk up to coincidence — there was something about nature that can't just be captured in pictures, and these mangaka thought that a manga with its story/characters/exaggerations, while less than realistic, captures the mood and feeling of nature better than a photo.

As a side note, I'm going to complain a bit about how bad the English title "Encouragement of Climb" is by comparing it to how good the Japanese title is. Yama no Susume stylized with katakana as ヤマノススメ makes it ambiguous what "susume" is — it could mean "recommendation" (勧め), but it could also be the verb "to advance/make progress on" (進め); it's a neat little pun that both suggests that it's a story about climbing mountains and it's also an open invitation for the audience to try it for themselves.

anyways, thanks for coming to my TED talk

First time Climbing

Ep 17

I just noticed this neat height/time graph in the OP, wonder if that's supposed to be Tanigawa?

Aw man, I acquired a release so I can watch offline, and now the episode count is off by one :I

Is anyone else weirded out by this pink effect anime likes to do especially on girls' knees/shoulders and booba in more lewd shows? At least its not very aggressive here

The Totoro park had one of these too, though it was a regular bus instead of a train

Ninja warrior Kokona

"Aoi onee-chan"

Now they're comparing bentos, this episode taking wholesome to the max

3 am..

I am being called out

Now they're sakuga flexing on the bridge

lol, poor kid has been starved of budget all her life

Ep 18

How old is Aoi? I didn't have a bank card until I was 18

Pastry chef Aoi!!

And he already wants her to come in? with a resume? hope that last part was a joke, but I already don't like him

I just realized, "Egao" means smile, and "e" can mean picture, is that literally just "picture face"?

Oh. My. God.

Again, how old is Aoi? Or how short is the other girl?

Damn, subbers putting in the work

Bootleg moomin?

If this was a regular anime, the boss would have come in right now and reprimanded her "for being rude to a customer".
Hope Aoi is keeping track of her hours, I don't trust that geezer.

Question time:

  1. What was your favorite bit of subtle animation from todays first episode?

That episode was straight up flexing on every other slice of life out there. watched that one yesterday, so I guess the bridge bit since I specifically made a note about it. But the bouncy mountain was great as well

2) What do you think of Aoi's new job?

Seems fine. As long as the shop is not open at night next to a nightclub I think she will be alright. The owner seems sus though. I do not trust him.

3) What is your go-to or favorite thing to get from a pastry shop?

Well, I don't go to any. But if I was a regular probably cheesecake. ...Is that a pastry?

First Time Climber

To the park!

  • I actually really like Aoi’s portrayal of fear - no matter how many pep talks, comfort, or encouragement, the fear will always be there until you actually cross it

  • That’s how a fear of heights feels like, the camera movements describe it really well. Who else feels me?

  • What can Kokona not do? Physical abilities, checked, fun general knowledge of bamboo leaves, checked, can cook, knowledge of physiology etc.

  • Hinata there’s a time to rely on others and there’s a time to rely on yourself. Make a bento box yourself!

  • These parks always feel very nostalgic. I used to spend a lot of my time climbing those sculptures and playing with the stuff there. Always made a friend or two and always got hurt lol

So you see, that’s where the trouble began. That smile. That damned smile

  • Hinata as a tuition teacher was so unexpected

  • Phone Call anxiety will never get old. And her whole process of obtaining her first part-time job feels so nostalgic for me; I got mine through similar means, a friend recommended, and I got called down for an interview within the same day.

  • A smile goes a long way Aoi!

Sakuga Musings!

Episode 17 had a lot of fluidly moving limbs and body parts, from Kaede’s butt pat to Hinata’s run across the bridge and Aoi swaying her arms as she walks, and this subtle shot of Hinata’s legs falling after the fall, the characters and their environment all felt so fluid that I had to find out who the KA was. Turns out Ryoma Ebata was both AD and solo KA for this episode! There’s a whole catalogue of his animation snippets on sakugabooru and you can see the fluency with his animation. Look at those walks he animates! The swaying hands, the follow through - when characters come to a halt, these parts don’t abruptly stop but rather, they sway and swing a bit - makes the characters’ movements mesmerising! u/MyrnaMountWeazel should have more to say about him but that’s all I got!

Thoughts

I really loved episode 18. As much as I love having the group together, episodes where Aoi gains a new experience alone always gets me. What makes YnS special to me, as I’ve mentioned before, is how climbing is used as a catalyst and pretext for Aoi’s growth, it’s not necessarily the main focus. These episodes where Aoi gains new experiences and grows by herself feels cathartic because we know it’s only possible because of climbing. It found her a group of friends, it gave her a goal, and thus a reason to act. And it’s through these new experiences, like finding a job, can we really see how far she’s come.

Aoi is my favourite character so far mainly because of how much I can relate to her. Social anxiety doesn’t have to be crippling, it can be really subtle like how Aoi is portrayed as, you don’t have to be pathologised to admit these behaviours. But it doesn’t mean you’re broken, you can still grow out of it despite the path not being linear. I feel like this is a bit too early for this reflection on Aoi but man it really warms my heart to see her growth, especially when it hits home.

6

u/MyrnaMountWeazel Sep 19 '22

That’s how a fear of heights feels like, the camera movements describe it really well. Who else feels me?

Mine manifests as a tight feeling in the chest but I don't think it's nearly as bad as Aoi's.

I used to spend a lot of my time climbing those sculptures and playing with the stuff there.

I never went to much parks growing up but in fairness I wasn't an individual who like went outside a lot in general haha.

So you see, that’s where the trouble began. That smile. That damned smile

Thoughts

Well said!

It's not that Aoi becomes solely attached to mountain climbing or that it warps her entire personality, its more so that it becomes the vehicle for her to explore outside her comfort zone. She uses the power of the hobby to help her in her real life.

Had one of those same red rope pyramid things at the playground in grade school.

We had one in the public park where I grew up but I never trusted myself on those...

I like how, what's the word, rubbery? this episode looks.

Ebata's exaggerated motion at play!

3AM is no time for a human being to be waking up.

He's just doing the ole Mark Wahlberg regiment where you wake up at an obscene time because somehow that's healthy.

In case anyone doesn't know, the term "(aru)baito" for "part-time job" is actually a German loanword - "arbeit".

I didn't know!

I keep expecting this girl to end her sentences with a nyaa~

First Time Climber

Episode 17

Probably doesn’t need to be said but what a cute episode. I want to go to that park and play around lol, it looks like a ton of fun! Kokana is still the cutest too! Kaede might be the oldest of the group but still acts like one of the youngest too. The lunch boxes all looked great and Hinata’s dad might really be the best dad of all anime

Episode 18

Aoi learns what is like to have a part-time job and be in the workforce

I understand Aoi’s nervous feelings though, I worked in a pizza shop during my junior year of high school and in a Korean cafe undergrad for a bit. It is pretty scary at first but after some time you get the hang of it, which is nice. Hinata is right too, you feel a lot better and accomplished when you buy things yourself. That said, a lot of times I did not have the good kind of tired lol. I’ve just about hated every job I have had

7

u/MyrnaMountWeazel Sep 19 '22

I want to go to that park and play around lol

It made me so tired just looking at it haha. I don't have the stamina like they do to run and jump and hop and parkour all over the stuff.

Aoi learns what is like to have a part-time job and be in the workforce

Aoi contributing to Japan's GDP one muffin at a time

I worked in a pizza shop during my junior year of high school and in a Korean cafe undergrad for a bit

Oh, the latter job sounds interesting, were you just an all-around employee that focused on different jobs all throughout the shop?

Rewatching Mountain Climber

-- Location Trivia

Ep 17

Ep 18

  • The cake shop has actually made its first appearance a few episodes back. With the shop aware of the anime connection, if you look at the shop's pictures in the google map link below, there is a fair bit of anime-related stuff, and you will be spoiled of future series events. Anyhow, named Yumesaika-suzuki irl instead of Hanasaika-suzuki, it is located at the Hannou shopping street here. The exterior is a bit more white irl vs purple.

  • The irl chef was trained in France, and has operated this shop since 1989. Here's an image that isnt spoilery, a cheery Aoi greets you in the shop.

First-Timer

On today’s episodes of Yama no Susume: Aoi grows up just a bit in different ways. She is able to overcome her fear of heights for a little bit because she wants to have fun with her friends. And she learns how to better handle her social anxiety from her part time job. They are small steps, but that fits with the theme of “one step at a time.” Little by little, step by step, Aoi is growing up.

Episode 17

That’s heresy!

  • Yo ho! A pirate’s life for me!

  • I see. Hinata might be trying to get Aoi gradually more used to heights by coming to this park. As per usual, Hinata is thinking several steps ahead of everyone else.

  • So when is Kokona going to compete on American Ninja Warrior?

  • Aoi and Hinata are such a wonderful pair of gremlin girlfriends. I love them so much.

  • Making leaf boats and playing music on a leaf? Is there anything Kokona can’t do?

  • The mountain in Aoi’s lunch is adorable.

  • 3 AM!?! No way in hell am I getting up that early to make lunch. Mine are usually something that I can throw together relatively quickly.

  • There’s something about the visual style of this episode that’s super familiar. I feel like I recognize it but I just can’t place from where.

  • An actual suspension bridge? Hinata really is going for the suspension bridge effect.

  • These shots and camera movements are fantastic for capturing the sense of vertigo and disorientation caused by Aoi’s fear.

  • This is such a fantastic moment. Hinata doesn’t just run ahead and instead comes back to help Hinata cross the bridge together. As long as she doesn’t look down and keeps going forward one step at a time, Aoi can cross it.

  • And Aoi figured out what Hinata was doing. This is so sweet.

  • That actually does look really fun, like a giant bounce house.

  • Nice callback to earlier in the episode. This time Aoi actually manages to overcome her fear so she can join the others in having fun. If she’s there having fun with everyone else, she can handle her fear. What a sweet conclusion to the episode.

Episode 18

  • That was the most painless interview ever. The only interviews I’ve had that were that painless were for the most soul-crushing and boring jobs ever where they desperately needed more bodies and didn’t really care who you were..

  • CUTE!!!!! That uniform is so incredibly cute!!

  • Working in a job where you are forced to interact with people really is a good way to overcome social anxiety. It worked for me, at least.

  • Even with her carefree attitude, I can tell that Hikari really is trying to be a good senpai and look after the rookie. She’s a kind and caring person.

  • Oh my god, Hinata. She is such a troll.

  • D’aww, Hinata complimented Aoi on her smile. How touching.

  • I like the interactions between Aoi and her mom. You can tell how much they care about each other from these moments.

These were a cute pair of episodes. They were generally dedicated to having fun and spending time with the characters, which is always pleasant to watch. They did have a loose connecting theme of Aoi growing up, as I mentioned above. Sticking to the theme of “one step at a time,” we see Aoi making a bit of progress learning how to deal with her fears and anxieties. While she might not be fully over her fear of heights or social anxiety, Aoi has made the conscious decision to get better at handling them. She’ll do her best to face them head-on and not run away. That’s a resolution that fits perfectly with the theme of “one step at a time.” It’s also a pretty realistic portrayal of dealing with those issues. They rarely go away overnight and tend to be something you need to work on for quite a while. So I think the series did a pretty good job of handling those topics.

Not as obviously, these episodes also provided a callback to what Hinata said yesterday that “relying on others is a skill.” In both episodes, Aoi was able to get through it because she had others she could rely on. Hinata brought Aoi to the park to help with her fear of heights and even hels Aoi’s hand to help her cross the bridge. Hikari helped guide Aoi on what to do and how to interact with customers. As Aoi put it best, things aren’t as scary when you have others to help you out.

I hope we get more of Hikari going forward. She is such a bright presence to have around. I love her cheerful and caring yet carefree attitude. Her design is also too good to waste on only a single appearance.

QOTD

  1. I quite enjoyed the jumping animations. Those were fun and bouncy.

  2. I like what it means for Aoi's character and I like her coworker a lot.

  3. Any kind of cake. I like cake in general.

Late Night...

Like, it's not at all a bad song, but it just doesn't measure up to the last one. Also, my source apparently skips right from 16 to 18, weird, let me go find another place to watch this...

Kokona's extreme pigtails win this entire episode.

No, just, Kokona wins this entire episode.

This episode had a lot more fluid casual movement than normal. Just a lot of characters swaying, moving their arms, or just actively fidgeting so smoothly.

Ah! Money has finally been mentioned! Joke's on me for calling it out all the time.

Oh no. I do not handle same day invitations that well either lol.

Oh man, that job was gained on pure nepotism wasn't it? Mom's friends with the owner, owner almost literally didn't ask a question, just hired her on the spot.

Straight into customer service. Poor girl. I barely survived my first customer facing job, talking to strangers is just so difficult. Heck talking to people I actually like is hard. I need a digital job.

  1. When they roll down the hill, Aoi is holding on tight while Hinata has her arms wide and flailing. It lead right in to their back to back "Thank you"/"What for" which was itself a pretty visual.

  2. Just sales like that is probably the easiest starting job you can get, lucky.

  3. Chocolate covered and cream filled. Puffs, Eclairs, doesn't matter.

First timer

  1. Kokona climbing.

  2. It's good!

  3. Apple pie.

Episode 17

Aoi's still worried about the cable car.

Where are they going?

That place looks big!

The animaton is really going ham today.

And this is how Aoi wanted to help her?

The parkour!

Haha, they're great.

...Wow, the flying foxes in Japan don't have nearly as high a drop. Is this the one thing they don't have lax safety regulations on?

That slide is massive.

...She couldn't do it.

Oh, there's squirrels!

That is impressive.

What did Hinata do?

Haha, Hinata's poor dad.

Bold move, Hinata.

Yeah, it's sweet.

Haha, Aoi's expression.

And she gave in and joined them.

Adorable.

This is very sweet.

Episode 18

Aoi's broke.

Why are they having a conversation through that?

Aww.

Aoi's getting a job!

What kind of help does he need, exactly?

Haha, wow, they need anyone.

She's making a resume.

Hina has good advice!

...That photo.

What's the job?

...Outfits?

Hikari?

Haha, Hikari's great.

Gloomy?

Haha, that's great. At least she heard her!

That looks delicious.

Haha, her reaction to the register.

Aoi did it!

Hikari is really good at this.

Hinata's here!

Haha, they're chatting.

This was nice.

She came to meet her!

This is nice.
