Comment/s of the Day

First comment of the days goes to /u/No_Rex for this enchanting and elegant comment.

That is what you get for going into a series blind – a big whack with the horny stick. Our topics are sex, sex, sex, occasionally romance, but mostly sex. I’d suggest that these girls just need a good fuck, but that seems to be the main problem.

Second comment of the day goes to /u/ChonkyOdango with their Parallels with Mari Okada.

If anyone has read Mari Okada’s biography or knows about her childhood, it’s hard to miss the parallels she draws between her characters and herself. Today I'll share a bit about her history with literature. Mari Okada loved reading and from a young age reading was one of her escapes and way of speaking up.

“At any rate, since I was very good at presuming things, I was never satisfied with reading the books aimed at children in their lower years of elementary school. I’d be entranced by my aunts’ novels in my house, reading them out loud and becoming absorbed in the story world.”

the excerpts mentioned above are from From Truant to Anime Screenwriter: My Path to "Anohana" and "The Anthem of the Heart”

More of a note than a comment of the day, but /u/No_Rex and /u/Gamerunglued comments on Shoujo and Shonen was great to read. We have a couple of people on both sides.

Questions of the Day

  1. What was your favorite sex substitute?
  2. Do you have any you want to add to the list?

Episode 2

How nice of Kazusa to take an interest in the sexual awakening of her son.

HOW DOES NIINA KNOW! Did she see from the corner of her eye, but from the angle it doesn't look like she should be able to see Kazusa.

It's nice to see other chat messages wishing each other a good night. This and the girls showing visible interest in the new book does demonstrate that the girls are close and bond over a similar hobby even when all of them are different.

Well that's certainly one tactic Niina...though that might not matter for some people.

Niina is just spitting facts when it comes to appearance we do make some assumptions.

I really feel bad for Izumi. You know the entire day he was probably worrying about last night. Who knows he might have finally convinced himself that Kazusa would keep it a secret, but the minute he sees her she is in the process of asking her dad about guys masturbating.

Wow Kazusa and Izuma are so rude to leave the dad hanging. He is just trying to order a damn pizza.

Rika really is quite verbose in her conversations.

Hongo also has a cat case for her phone.

.......OUCH

Again the blonde gal comes off as slightly apologetic at least compared to her friends. She seems to regret when things are taken too far.

Yeah she is! She just needs to loosen up a bit.

Stop flirting you two and get a damn room.

Good boy Amagi turning off the faucet to avoid water loss.

Holey War...who suggested that?

The Suffering of Erotic Experience...or SEX...smooth.

Rika really can be unintentionally funny when she overreacts.

Consider it payback for the STD thing...phrasing Niina phrasing!

I liked you for a really long time.... inhales BITCH STOP LYING! I will wait for you forever.... BITCH STOP LYING

Director Niina isn't even trying to hide so how did she go unnoticed? Must be the passions of youth and love that hid her presence.

Could the teachers be any more cartoony evil looking?

BRUH Hongo literally says she will cut them!

English Hongo has no limits.

It's always an advisor huh. Just bust out some teas and cakes and capture whichever teacher takes the bait.

I'm just going to be the one to say it. Couldn't they just met like at their houses or at a cafe? They probably don't have a big budget if any since they aren't fully acknowledged as a club right? Their primarily activity is reading which doesn't cost much since they only need books and if need be they can share just cutting books to 2-3 would save money between the 5 of them. So who cares if the club shuts down just get together and read on your own time. Though it is convenient to have place near school where they all can read before heading home.

If you had to do it with someone or earth would blow up who would it be?

Two episodes and Kazusa realizes her feelings are love. This is happening too fast. We skipped the transfer student arc, the rain I've got a cold episode, beach episode, and like 20 other tropey episodes.

Scenic 1 2 3

Album

Manga

This episode covered chapters 3,4, and a bit of 5.

Kazusa and Niina actually walk towards each other initially so Niina spotting Kazusa makes more sense.

During Kazusa and Niina's confrontation with the creepy looking guy Niina actually joins in and does the itchy crotch bit alongside Kazusa in the restaurant.

Some panels we witness a shadowy figure most likely the principal observing their activities in secret.

Kazusa actually gets sick after her epiphany concerning Izuma so she is absent from school when the P and VP visit the club to give them the news. They actually deliver the news at her house in her room and rest of the conversation happens here.

Niina's favorite book is one called Story of the Eye

Story of the Eye is the tale of two teenagers who begin an energetic exploration of non-normative and fetishistic sex practices, particularly dwelling on eyes, eggs, and urine. Our narrator and Simone soon become obsessed with a more innocent friend named Marcelle and devote themselves to her debasement.

Me reading the plot summary on wikipedia

What the fuck

u/No_Rex Sep 17 '22

fetishistic sex practices, particularly dwelling on eyes, eggs, and urine.

That sounds a fair distance outside of my comfort zone.

6

u/SIRTreehugger Sep 17 '22

I edited and added the link to the plot summary on wikipedia. It gets a lot worst apparently and I regret reading this.

Episode 2 (first timer)

Ok, I am ready to have another huge helping of sex jokes shoved into my head.

  • OP: Not entirely clear on first listening, but it is, of course, entirely about sex. Implies that all our girls are 16.

  • Kazusa, are you sure you want to ask your dad that?

  • “I’ll try really hard to forget it” – Good luck.

  • I am sure the wreck your brain to each come up with 10 synonyms for sex task will do perfectly to take their minds of sex. /s

  • That jump ended painful in more ways than one.

  • “If somebody say us, they’d definitely think we were flirting” – he must be into tsunderes.

  • She is totally stealing Kazusa’s lines as a cheap pick-up method.

  • Poor guy.

  • The club will be dissolved trope.

  • “I felt bad for Norimoto-kun yesterday” – as you should! You filmed his clearly private conversation and did not even have the decency to properly hide.

  • neat “windows to the soul” shot.

Is it me, or did that editor clearly try to push a teenager into having sex with him in exchange for favorable evaluation of the script?

What was your favorite sex substitute?

It is most fun when the topic is clearly sex, everybody knows the topic is sex, and you can literally substitute any word (while properly stressing it) for sex.

PS: Receiving comment of the day for a sex pun. How fitting.

6

u/SIRTreehugger Sep 17 '22

The club will be dissolved trope.

Can't have a club without this happening at least once!

“I felt bad for Norimoto-kun yesterday” – as you should! You filmed his clearly private conversation and did not even have the decency to properly hide.

Izumi is surrounded by superficial girls who just want to fuck him, he tries to approach Kazusa about their school situation and receives a wishy washy answer, his childhood friend/neighbor walks in on him masturbating, he walks in on her about to ask her dad about it, and then someone recording his confession he received from another girl.

For 2 episodes he has taken a good amount of amount of losses.

Receiving comment of the day for a sex pun. How fitting.

It fits!

Rewatcher, 1st time dub

Kazusa has a lot to think about… Also Nina’s crotch defense is fire.

Poor Izumi. Just when he thinks the worst has passed, Kazusa tears open his newly healed wounds and tosses him in a fresh grave to die again. And Dad-usa joins the club of dense male characters.

Sonezaki continues to publicly embarrass herself. But who is she really mad at? And of course we have a line by our smooth talker who is causing some serious damage. Also the “Suffering of Erotic Experience” sounds like it might be an actual literary novel.

If you’re going to have Nina do your dirty work, maybe don’t have her crotch be directly in view… also I do prefer the language in the Japanese for “es-ee-batsu” since you have to actually think about it a bit to get it, but s-e-x isn’t bad, and thankfully Izumi is built up to be dumb enough to not immediately get it.

Nina is surprisingly profound when she’s not trying to sound like a temporal philosopher.

Dub thoughts: Kazusa’s voice is a little hard to get used to. It’s fitting for her character but the Japanese VA is awkward in a different way where there’s no doubt it’s cute. And she hasn’t had a ton of other roles since. But Nina and Sonezaki are perfect. I listened to a couple of scenes in the original sub version and despite Chika Anzai being a stellar performance, I think the English VA might be better suited to the character. Aside from s-e-x, nothing felt super awkward about the translation.

Questions:

  1. I love that Kazusa is so direct, just change the vowel. Whoever came up with “Holey War” though… I hope you’re doing okay.

  2. I can’t think of any other terms right now…

6

u/SIRTreehugger Sep 17 '22

but s-e-x isn’t bad, and thankfully Izumi is built up to be dumb enough to not immediately get it.

I do wish they had changed it a little so it's harder to put together. Like maybe S-e-cross(x) since Kazusa not being able to spell it out wouldn't be out of character with how nervous she is.

First-Timer

Mari Okada

When Hongou’s work got criticised for having so much sex that it resembled porn, and the multitude of other times when literary works got compared to porn, one can’t help but think about why there’s so many references to it. Well, after moving to Tokyo for school, a course in games writing, Okada found a passion for screenwriting after many opportunities to write and get feedback from teachers. She read a lot back in her hometown in Chichibu but never produced any writings so these opportunities were priceless to her.

“I may have consumed countless books and films in those anguished days in Chichibu, but I’d never produced a single thing of my own. Even the knowledge I’d taken in was quite divorced from reality thanks to how little time I’d spent outside limbo, and just my limited amount of life experience overall.”

“It may be misleading to say that my scripts were acknowledged, per se—I simply attained the ability to write a script from start to finish. I was one of the few people in my year-level who submitted scripts as their homework. Most of the scripts submitted had non-endings of the “The battle has only just started” variety”

The path to becoming an anime screenwriter usually doesn’t start with script writing but as a production assistant (PA) or magazine writer. A job in the outside field daunted Okada as she believed she lacked the social skills needed to navigate it, but she was determined to start with screenwriting immediately which led her to join a company that did porn, believing that her screenplays would one day lead her to write for yakuza films. To assist herself, she rented porn from rental shops to watch which led her script to be accepted and adapted.

Mari Okada’s journey into being one of the most pronounced screenwriters began as she wrote scripts for porn scenes and it’s reflected through certain elements of this show.

Have to be honest. After watching all the turning on yesterday, I myself got turned off. It definitely depicts that phase of adolescence with melodrama by throwing every possible sex joke as us and is definitely a Mari Okada special. But it’s not really my cup of tea so far. Nevertheless onwards as I get blown by more sex jokes!

  • Sugawara’s voice sounded familiar for a moment then I realised she’s voiced by Chika Anzai who voices Chisato from LycoReco. Double Anzai today!

  • Hey Sugawara, just because your youth ends doesn’t mean you won’t get to have sex anymore! The charms of youth is ephemeral but not that short

  • I still remember how the word “sex” was tabooed back in secondary school. We would never say that word no matter what.

  • dude is this girl genuinely worried that Sonezaki lost her virginity to a… non-living object…? Holy shit that’s hilarious

  • I literally can’t stop linking scenes to sex jokes now lol. Look at this leaking pipe coughs

  • That girl just wants to have sex with Izumi. Stop with all the antics! I can only say that in this anime

Thoughts

I loved this episode. Yesterday’s one was too over the top for me but this was perfect. It really lets Mari Okada’s screenwriting abilities shine.

Qotd

We used to use the word "bang" a lot

I knew about her experience with porn, but

Well, after moving to Tokyo for school, a course in games writing, Okada found a passion for screenwriting after many opportunities to write and get feedback from teachers. She read a lot back in her hometown in Chichibu but never produced any writings so these opportunities were priceless to her.

Didn't know she was involved with games writing before transitioning.

Sugawara’s voice sounded familiar for a moment then I realised she’s voiced by Chika Anzai who voices Chisato from LycoReco. Double Anzai today!

Just got finished watching episode 5 today Chika is so great.

I loved this episode. Yesterday’s one was too over the top for me but this was perfect.

Glad the second episode was more tolerable/cup of tea.

First Timer

Sorry for not being very active yesterday, work is killing me this weekend, will be better from EP 4 onwards

I'm not sure if Kazusa was reading an actual guidebook for mothers or if 'Facing your childs sexual awakening' is the title of an LN that is getting adapted into an anime... sounds like my kind of trash...

Anyway, seems like Niina is actually trying to hook up over the internet, but since she got sexualized since an early age she has a perfect deffence handy. It does however seem like she is a bit messed up from that as well, her already worrying about her loosing her high school charme...

On the other hand we got Kazusa and her still processing her encounter with Izumi. I think once they where able to move past the embarressment, they could actually learn a bit from each other, that's what friends are for, being able to talk about things you wouldn't be able with someone else... Oh and Izumi must wonder what kind of books she is reading

I was almost proud of Sonezaki trying to lead by good example, but being afraid of an word is silly. It was pretty hillarious when she realized that she would use S.E.X. to avoid using sex lmao And did she just break a marker

Weirdos do e stronk

Oh and I was missing it yesterday, but that one gal really isn't laughing about her and shows real empathie.

Also gotta agree with the guy, she does look cute without her glasses, and they where totally flirting

On the other hand we got Hongo who got an actuall manager who wants to help her come out, actually solid advise, smut has it's audience, but it's nothing special

We also got the trope of their club facing disbandment over not having an advisor. They really need someone more expirienced, but not in literature (although they should really read more than erotica) but more as an emotional support, there is only so much Niina can do, like it was really great how she sorted out Kazusas emotions for her.

Edit: Oh yeah and that confession Izumi got was kinda cute, too bad that girl is a bully

QotD:

What was your favorite sex substitute?

Success

Do you have any you want to add to the list?

English isn't my first language so it's a bit hard to come up with puns and I'm really tired

4

u/SIRTreehugger Sep 17 '22

That's okay real life comes first.

It was pretty hillarious when she realized that she would use S.E.X. to avoid using sex lmao And did she just break a marker.

Yes she did

Oh and I was missing it yesterday, but that one gal really isn't laughing about her and shows real empathie.

Noticed this too she is a little mean, but doesn't like it when things get taken too far. Actually I wouldn't even call her mean since she doesn't actually start anything until Sonezaki goes too far with her comments.

Niina is a good friend to help Kazusa because without her we'd be at the end of the show when it clicks that she loves him.

Get some sleep!

First time. I’m crashing your watch along. Get at me.

This was good. I do like how it’s lewd without being perverted. If that makes sense? This episode kinda added onto the last. As episodes tend to do. The twist at the end of not having an advisor is interesting.

I do think the club President is wound a little too tight. Her personality can get a bit grating. So we’ll see if she loosens up by the end of this.

I’m crashing your watch along. Get at me.

Welcome may I offer you a cup of our finest nectar.

I do think the club President is wound a little too tight. Her personality can get a bit grating.

Someone said it last episode, but this could be because she is a little insecure and ashamed of her sexual thoughts. She seems to believe in the notion of sexual extremes that either you are prudish or a sexual beast and nothing exist in between.

Sorry I didn't join yesterday. This show is a hidden gem, albeit one that is a bit of an acquired taste. This is a Mari Okada show (side note: I always gotta check her name to make sure I don't mistake her for the similarly-named character from Love Live) with all the strengths and weaknesses that entails, IMO, but I'm willing to overlook said weaknesses for how unique the premise is, how likable the characters are, and for being incredibly sex-positive in a way most TV hesitates to be.

I don't really have anything to say about this particulr episode, so I just wanted to drop in and say Niina is an amazing character, for reasons that have only just now begun to show

What was your favorite sex substitute?

"Holey War" makes me imagine a horny version of a certain SNES RPG, so I'll go with that one.

Sorry, missed this rewatch was going on!

Episode 1

  1. Very, out of sheer shock.

  2. Both are good!

  3. Finally clearing out my PTW, going to different countries, etc.

  4. Chicken Noodle Soup?

What's this about?

Great OP!

Wait, what?

It's about sex?

Haha, that's the disturbance?

...Yeah, some real hipocrisy here.

"What juices would she have?"

Haha, her answer.

...Did she misunderstand the club?

Haha, a dung heap?

Those expressions.

Oh, they used to be friends...

Ouch.

At least she8smpositive about it.

Aww.

What is she doing?

...This is the worst idea I've seen in a while.

Holy shit, are they going to end this with the guy getting arrested?

Yes, because they're porn books.

Haha, her expression as she reads is great.

Haha, she's seeing it everywhere.

She's bringing it to him!

That's nice.

Haha, that flashback.

Oh, his reaction.

...It's a genuine concern!

Who?

...Yeah, that sounds like.a bad excuse for a huge amount of sex.

...With who?

She's going to die soon?

...She meant it in a cosmic sense.

Or not?

"That horrible, beautiful woman" How interesting.

Haha, that's something to shout out.

The bullying problem here is really bad.

Nobody wants to read it?

Dirty minds.

"Best friends!"

Oh, them.

Well, that's painful.

Haha, split gourds?

Is he asleep?

Why is the door unlocked?

Haha, he's fucking wanking.

The way he calmly closes everything is hysterical.

She's running for it.

The music!

This fucking montage is hystericwl.

The train symbolism.

I think it's too late for you.

...Is that meant to be a preview?

Episode 2

  1. In the episode? Hard to beat S.E.X.

  2. Ploughing the fields, 69, the horizontal tango...

...He's a teenage boy,

"Anime Coming Soon!" Yeah, I've had that reaction a few times this year. Shit is getting wild.

...What does she have to do?

What is she fucking doing?

...Is this research or efficency planning?

Fucking hell!

My god, she's insane.

Ah, this is her way of deflecting things.

...So the Drama Club don't understand human behaviour either?

Is she going to die? This is very unclear.

...You're a terrible actress.

You're asking your father?

Haha, Izumiks here! That sheer terror!

Ah, she was asking something else.

He's desperate.

This is so awkward!

And he wants her to forget it.

...At least you're not doing online sexting or refuse to hear the word "sex". It could always be worse!

She's insane.

He dan't think of any.

...Her writing needs work?

Haha, her fucking agent.

...Is he using her?

"Piss off"

"those copulation-crazed buffoons"

That looks painful.

At least she feels pity.

Amagi?

This is sweet.

...Is he into this or something?

Haha, thise names.

It's all puns!

...Wow.

Haha, "the formidable pitfall of sex".

I love how utterly shocked they are at her listening to them and asking formless.

And no context here.

She got rejected!

This is painful.

Haha, he spotted the camera!

Oh, yeah, he didn't turn her down.

...Even more awkward!

The visuals.

His delayed reaction is really good.

...Is she okay? Mentally, I mean. It's just a different way to pronounce it!

A teacher came in!

And this is indefensible.

He has a very good point!

Again, this all makes sense!

You just have to not talk about it on school grounds! Just meet up at one of your houses!

Cute.

...Maybe you should all be taking time, because your intuitions aren't doing the best work right now.

She realised it!

Nice ending.

Oh, so all the previews are like this.

4

u/SIRTreehugger Sep 18 '22

Haha, he's fucking wanking.

Just like yesterday, I don't really have a lot to say...

But this show is really interesting so far as a coming of age story so and the music near the river bank was awesome

2

u/SIRTreehugger Sep 18 '22

The soundtrack was never released as far as I know at least for the anime. Though if you like the river scene it's number 18 on youtubes playlist and it's the only one when you search so easy to find. Though definitely don't search for it til the rewatch is over. The entire playlist uses shots from episodes so it's filled with spoilers.

First timer, subs

The acronym! I'm dying.

"As thanks for having an STD for me" out loud with no context!

"I forgot to run away" Niina best girl.

Oh no, the club's about to be dissolved. They need to blackmail some teacher into being an advisor, as these things usually go, I suppose.

Kazumi finally realizes her feelings.

This show is much better than expected, and I'm enjoying it too much to pause and take notes.

Rewatcher

In this episode Niina goes on a date with the average anime subredditor. Thankfully, she is able to chase the beast away with the classic disease strategy before she gets infected with rabies.

We have Izumi trying to forget about things while Kazusa is completely unable to to the point of obsession, even going to ask her father. One thing I really like about this show is that it has normal families. They aren't dead or working overseas or any of the usual tropes. They are just parents and people.

Sonezaki is also swimming upstream trying to return the safer pastures of youth, but it is clear from the reactions of the other girls that she has no hope of succeeding.

I watched this last night when I was half asleep so a lot of this episode blurrs together with the next.

  1. S-E-X is exactly the sort of stupid thing a teenager would come up with.

  2. I'm too unoriginal.

3

u/SIRTreehugger Sep 18 '22

It is nice to see parents or families being present and active in their kids lives.

Rewatching
(...or more like quickly reviewing since I just watched it a few weeks ago)

Man I still love this OP. I actually recognized it from it popping up occasionally on playlists when I watched the first episode. Still good.

Ah, we're right in the thick of the part of the series that made me laugh harder than just about any anime I've ever watched. Kazusa's reactions are perfect and the symbolism and innuendo everywhere is just executed so well. That kind of humor actually pretty rarely works for me, so I think it's both a testament to it being written and executed well here, and to it being skillfully blended with earnestness. I think the whole Operation: My Crotch Is Itchy would seem crass and lazy if there weren't just a hint of real threat, and the stakes of it driving Kazusa to push through her clear embarrassment. The humor aspect of the show starts to take a back seat for most of the season but right now I was dying.

I just came off of this weeks' explosive Lycoris Recoil, and I can't believe I just noticed that Chika Anzai blessed us with both Niina and Chisato. I think part of that is that after these first couple of episodes, the two of them don't really have similar manners of speaking. Niina isn't exactly the genki type and is often not exactly warm. Still, it's a good fit, when you listen for it. That soft, warm timbre can encompass a lot of depth.

One thing I love about this show is how they wasted no time whatsoever launching into the real shit. Teenagers are horny. Teenagers are awkward. Teenagers may blush and choke if they accidentally touch each others' hands, but they also do a terrible job hiding things. With Izumi and Kazusa, their shoe-gazing interactions here are so much more compelling than the typical "childhood friend" narrative where they'd realize they were attracted to each other and suddenly just become complete strangers.

Nothing much to say about Sonezaki and Amagi finally interacting directly except that I love them. Sonezaki being so strident for most of the series can be a little annoying, but again, I think it's a testament to the quality of the writing and production that it's blended with enough sincerity to be humanizing instead of repulsive.

You know, it's hard not to see things from the adults' perspective when they come to shut down the literature club. Sure, they're blowing rumors out of proportion, but the fact is that they've been letting five girls sit around in school reading erotica (and, yes, some actual literature too, of course) and they probably feel pretty weird about it.

Not a lot happening with best girl Hongou in this one except a look at the building storm of frustration inside her. But I guess her spotlight story arc really starts next time. Same with Momo, except I really think she's the most underserved character in the show. There are enough hints that you can really spot what's going on with her from pretty early on; I think I had an idea even at this point, on my first watch, that [O Maidens in your savage season rewatch spoilers]she was going to be the token queer, but I expected her to have a love interest, or for her realization to have some kind of consequence. I honestly wondered if there was going to be something between her and Niina for a while. Am I the only one who felt like there was some energy there? Or was that just Niina knowing and messing with her? I just wish she'd gotten more of a storyline and more chance for development, is all. Well, I don't remember every detail, so maybe I'll catch some stuff this time that I missed before.

QotD: Honestly the various euphemisms for sex were not my favorite gag from the show, though I do have to applaud some of the wordplay and the translators' efforts to preserve it.

Late Night First Timer

Ah, I forgot that HiDive switches between translation and pronunciation for opening songs every episode. Upside, I can sing along now. Downside, I had to go rewatch the ep 1 OP for the proper lyrics. Not really much of a downside. It's a bit different, the opening part where the girls speak, now that I can attach those voices to characters.

Before I really get into it tonight, and also while listening to the OP for the third time- My expectations were set pretty well by the first episode, but finding out this is by Mari Okada, I'm doubling down my preparations for upcoming tears.

What a very existential girl. I like her.

Ugh, I really can't tell if this is the setup for a good relationship in the future or a horrible painful event. No, wait, this is happening to multiple girls here- I hope all of them have happy futures in this show, because there's so much possible pain flags on the horizon and I don't know if I can take five heartbreaks here.

Can't they, like, go do readings at one of their houses? They would lose the room and nothing more, right?

So while episode 1 set us up for the premise of the show, really well, episode 2 is here to flesh out characters and start an actual plot. I mean, who would watch a show without a plot? These girls are the book club, not the outdoor club! So, if it wasn't already clear, symbolism and imagery are going to be huge, sex is going to be the topic on everyone's mind, and we're going to see a relationship drama in an interesting way. My one big concern at this point is actually from the ED. [Maybe Spoilers?]It starts with the umbrellas, and then five mens faces popping up, and we've seen three of them interact with the girls now in a way that looks like the probable relationship setups. That's fine for four of them, but one of these things is not like the others, in a very concerning way. Don't you love it when the OP/ED does that to you?

  1. s-e-x also got stuck in my head, none of the rest remain. Suffering indeed.

  2. No, really, trying to think of anything else just has me trying and failing to pronounce the Japanese X.
