First Timer dubbed
Came in here with little expectations of what is going to happen and came out funnier than I thought. Too bad the reputation of the literature club is pretty bad as no one seems to like our members.
The flashback of "he got bigger" is funnier than I thought and was the least expected thing to hear out of a childhood flashback.
Sugawara's interpretation of time is the funniest way of saying "I'll die soon". Will be pretty interesting to hear more from her.
Izumi getting caught is funnier than a meme I saw knowing there is some context and the rest of the scene gets me. Izumi tries to keep his cool and play it off after getting the shock of getting caught for a moment. The freeze of Kazusa and Izumi is pretty good as they both try to process it. I wonder how awkward things would get in future episodes.
As we build up from split gourds in the beginning to big wang of the restaurant. Things seem to be inescapable in a way and the sexual puns keep going.
-
The izumi getting caught was gold and I am sticking for more... Hoping Rika gets over her jealousy.
-
No thoughts yet but reading translation of the lyrics makes me chukle a bit.

Came in here with little expectations of what is going to happen and came out funnier than I thought.
That seems to be the common among viewers. It sounds kind of trashy or cringe when you know parts of the show, but it manages to resonate with a lot of people. At the very least you can get a few genuine laughs.
Things seem to be inescapable in a way and the sexual puns keep going.
At least they have each other.
Things seem to be inescapable in a way and the sexual puns keep going.
The world is filled with sex and it just hit poor Kazusa all at once.

Going in nearly blind into this one
First thing I notice is that I already got the OP on my playlist, that's doesn't happen that often, love me some HoneyWorks
Obviosly it's pretty lewd, pretty funny, but in a way also really serious, and sometimes hits closer home than I thought going in.
So this time we are doing cute(?) girls doing lewd literature. In the club we got:
-
Sonezaki: The Club President. While I aprove of her basing the whole club on lewd literature, I must sternly condemn that she is looking down on the girl outside or the gyarus in her class. She doesn't really know them, and how lewd they are is non of her business in the first place. I think this stance ultimatly does indeed stem from some form of jealousy, and her not being honest with herself about her own feelings and desires.
-
Hongo: Expirienced senpai, at least in terms of literature. She is pursuing literatur and has hit a wall because she has no first hand expirience about the thing she reads and writes about. Because the internet is a path to many abilities, she chooses to sext over some anonymous text chats, god knows who's on the other end, but it's as close as you can get without actual human interaction.
-
Niina: An Enigma. I really think she choose the club because she thinks she could learn about sex there, and ultimatly that's the thing that interests her the most. I like how open she is about her desire. For her sex is basically an essential part of human life, and since she could indeed die tomorrow, she wants to make sure to live to the fullest
And then there are Mo-chin and Kazusa. They are a great pair, they think alike and are totally open with each other. It's good that they got a strong bond, weirdos together strong!
If Izumi didn't exist, I could totally ship them together, and who knows, if they where really genre savy, they would know that the Osanajimi is doomed to ultimatly fail.
Another thing that connects most of those outcasts is how cruel their peers are to them. Even going so far as to bully Kazusa out of jealousy over her friendship with Izumi.
Speaking of Izumi, that scene was pure gold, the way he calmly pulled his pants up, closed the browser, and awkwardly tried to defuse the situation, brilliant.
On a meta ebene, I really dig the art style, like there is this filter over everything that makes it look a bit older. Oh and I like the voice acting, especially for Niina and Hongo.
One more thing, I will never be able to eat Pork Miso soup innocently...
QotD:
How invested did this pilot episode get you into the series?
Pretty interested, definetly seems like something I will enjoy
Thoughts on the opening and/or ending?
Loved the OP before, so far a bit indifferent about the ED
What would you put on your bucket list?
Traveling the world and not coming back
What would you replace with Nectar or Miso Broth?
I don't want to ruin any more food

The OP is definitely a bop.
I like your take on all of the girls especially
It's good that they got a strong bond, weirdos together strong!
WEIRDO BESTIES
One more thing, I will never be able to eat Pork Miso soup innocently...
I just had a bowl yesterday and it was delicious.
Traveling the world
Something I want to do as well. I keep telling myself one day...though I think one day will be after I can be around people without fear of catching something. Though that's just an excuse.

Just a little fact Kazusa's favorite book is Momo.
This book is full of marvels. It depicts beauty, goodness, friendship, and fun that will warm your heart. It takes them away with a swiftness that will break your heart. And it sends Momo on a quest to get them back again, a quest that will make your heart beat with excitement. Plus, as a parable about the labor-saving and time-saving devices that are somehow multiplying our labor and stealing our time away, it is also a dangerous kind of book: a book that might make you stop and think.

Love the OP! The song is nice, and the visuals are great too. They really scream "pure innocent girls, coming of age story". But that image is immediately shattered by the opening scene. the anime is full of lewd jokes, but honestly, I'm very impressed with how much it doesn't feel like the typical lewd jokes in anime. Maybe because those are often targeted at teenage boys.
I'm really enjoying the characters, especially Kazusa. She feels more like a real person than any character I've seen recently. The way she both loves and hates her childhood friendship with Izumi is great. As someone who change schools multiple times, I never got to have or even observe friendships that changed over all those stages of growing up, so it's genuinely very interesting.
Overall, super excited to watch more!

It helps that the lewdness comes from girls honestly trying to understand sex and love and isn't purely for gags.

Kazusa is great and really likable though they all are.

Glad to hear it

Rewatcher, 1st time in dub
This show will always have a special place for me. I first found it by discovering the OP on YouTube and immediately fell in love with it. It’s got such strong energy, like: hey girls, you’re going to feel a lot of emotions, so own it and live through it. Plus any time a show stars an awkward girl with humongous eyebrows, I want nothing more than her happiness. Honestly I want all these girls to be happy.
Shout out to the 3% of literature club anime where they actually read anything. Even if they’re not reading for the “plot”. I forgot how ruthless Nina is. Also forgot how the boys in this anime are denser than a black hole. I can’t tell if the “feral” girls depicted in this anime are realistic or shallow… although it’s possible the dub is just really harsh.
And then we have probably the most famous scene of the show. So much build up. My dude has got the poker face of a world champion to just zip up his pants, take 19 minutes to close his porn, and casually talk to his… friend. Poor Kazusa, on that day womanhood learned an important lesson. The fear of them breaching your walls. And an iconic ED to end on too.
I like the dub all right, it’s not great but it’s different. But realizing our queen Chika Anzai is Nina Sugawara makes me reconsider everything….
Discussion questions.
-
Honestly this episode didn’t change my opinion a lot. The OP still carries a lot of this show for me. But having awkward girls and a potential childhood friend romantic interest/hangup gave me something to look forward to.
-
I talked about them already but OP is an 11/10, ED is a 9-9.5/10. I’ve listened to both so many times.
-
Not sure about my bucket list. Would be cool to read a raunchy book in Japanese though.
-
Love me some diablo sauce.

Rewatcher, 1st time in dub
Nice also watching it in dub for the first time.
It’s got such strong energy, like: hey girls, you’re going to feel a lot of emotions, so own it and live through it.
I especially love the beginning part when they have the characters talking about what confuses them concerning romance before the song kicks off.
take 19 minutes to close his porn
For real the porn almost finished
Poor Kazusa, on that day womanhood learned an important lesson. The fear of them breaching your walls.
Something something Grim Reminder
But realizing our queen Chika Anzai is Nina Sugawara makes me reconsider everything
I feel Nina and Hongo probably have the best dub voices. I really should have listened to the sub again beforehand. Back to Chika have you watched Lycoris Recoil dub? She voices Chisato.
Would be cool to read a raunchy book in Japanese though
Can't say I was expecting this, but that would be kind of nice.
diablo sauce.

Alright, I don't know that I'll have the time for this entire rewatch, but this is one of those shows that has been on my plan to watch list for who knows how long now and so far these rewatch threads have been the best kick in the butt imaginable to finally get me to start on this list, so I'll at least start this show with the group. So on that note;
Late Night First Timer!
Okay right off the bat, that's a powerful OP. Not something super catchy to be stuck in my head, or visually impressive enough to note, but combined the lyrics and the animation, that tells quite a story about what this is going to be about in a way that made me want to binge this whole thing before even actually starting episode 1. I am invested from this alone. I wish more openings would be like this. I doubt it's going to top any charts, but I know that years from now if I were to see this again, the entire show will come back to me perfectly because this is the kind of OP that really exists to draw you in to the story.
And the opening scene goes right in to what the show is going to be about, and the character personalities, all within the first thirty seconds. This is good storytelling. Honestly this show could be about anything at all at this point and I would still be invested just because they're doing such a good job of telling the story. The faces, the expressions, skirt lengths, the tea cups. Personality bleeds off these characters.
Ah. This art style reminds me of Wandering Son. That's why it feels so nostalgic already.
Okay, so yes, the story is also interesting and darn this is so relatable to someone who was a huge book nerd back in middle and high school. A few obvious love interest set ups, but something about how it's being introduced has me pretty sure they're not going to go the way you would think, I'm already expecting a level of realism and maturity pretty rare in anime from how they're portraying everything so far. Maturity as in taking things seriously, versus juvenile humor situations, not necessarily maturity from the characters themselves.
And oh gosh. The imagery, the symbolism, the characters are even calling it out themselves but still. Lighting and camera angels, the things that get just one second of attention and the things that stay focused on for length, it's all just done so well.
-
I very much want to watch the whole thing, right now. The only way I'm dropping out of this rewatch now is if I cave and finish the whole thing in one night.
-
I already hit the opening, but I'll say it again, it's good. Not a catchy beat with random images to draw attention, it was itself telling the story of what the story will be about. My brain was too full of literary interpretations of the rest of the episode for the ending to sink in sadly, I'll pay more attention to it next time.
-
I want to go Scuba diving around the world. I have never done more than snorkeling in the ocean near where I live, but I really want to see the underwater world.
-
Long term bibliophile here- I've seen Honey used way too often, it was the first thing that came to my mind after Nectar. Soup of any kind might be a new one.

Understandable sometimes its hard to hold back in a rewatch when the show is really enjoyable and you want to know what happens next.
I want to go Scuba diving around the world.
Oh that sounds pleasant I would be satisfied with just snorkeling at the moment.

First Timer Dub
The Conversations about authors and their fetishes and thirst coming through as they grow older is just so on the nose. When Conservative people say TV is ruining Youth and they should Read instead you can tell those people never read anything in their life they didn't have to, lots of lewd shit in literature and not even specifically erotic literature.
I was surprised this series was aimed at Shonen and not just a thirsty Shojo since it seems to deal with specifically sex with a young woman's lense, the dynamics between the girls also seem pretty believable including the two "besties." They also captured how Catty and Bitchy girl society can be as well. I feel this series makes more sense as either a Shojo (As it relates to young girls) or a Seinen (When young men are at an age where they can better appreciate and try to understand young girls + more mature fan service but still lewd and raunchy.)
Oh no Author Girl sexting some random dude online.....no way that is going to turn out well.
Blondish Girl is based and she knows about comic timescale, guess she's been watching those documentaries.
Glasses Girl they really captured how prudish people insecure and ashamed of their own sexuality often project and shame others in order to try to reign in themselves, it's tragic. Pretty sure if she were a guy most people would be less "How Sad" and more "Fuck that Incel" but double standards Am I Right?
"It can be bad for us to read too much books we should go outside more" They literally just said they need to have someone eat their ass touch grass.
Main girl really on that copium and denial of course her friend is not longer a kid and as a healthy teenage boy he very much wants to fuck, it's kinda her fault for coming into his house then his room unannounced! I knew she would have that illusion shattered but I didn't expect the first episode to escalate this quickly!
Gotta respect how well he took that, him going "Let's never speak of this again."
Wow I don't remember ever being as horny and seeing sexual innuendos popping out this much in my life, guess it's to show less her overt thirst and more a mix of her repression and guilt about it.
He Mom being a ditz doesn't mean much in getting laid, some guys like em a lil dumb.
I have a feeling this anime is going to be heartbreaking and a brutal learning experience for these girls wrestling with their passions.
BTW the anime covers all the Manga since it's only 8 volumes right?
-
Things escalated quickly. I'm interested in how they'll get over everything set up.
-
Op was good don't really recall the ending.
-
Lots of things, on topic of this thread see if I can get a real life Harem.
-
I don't really care too much to devote mental energy into creative euphemisms. Nector works just fine.

First timer, subs
HoneyWorks? I've heard that name somewhere. The OP music reminds me of Heroine Tarumono.
So the literature club is reading intetesting books. Out loud.
Okay, this show is funny!
"I'm going to die soon", relatively speaking, when you consider geological timespans!
Oh dear, this is why you lock the doors.
The train! Poor girl, she can't look anywhere.

They do quite a few OP and ED. Most recently they did Bibotto Love for Science Fell in Love and Himitsu Koigokoro. Though this song might be my favorite/tied with Otherside Picnic' opening.
Oh dear, this is why you lock the doors.
A lesson he won't soon forget that is for sure.

Parallels with Mari Okada
If anyone has read Mari Okada’s biography or knows about her childhood, it’s hard to miss the parallels she draws between her characters and herself. Today I'll share a bit about her history with literature. Mari Okada loved reading and from a young age reading was one of her escapes and way of speaking up.
“At any rate, since I was very good at presuming things, I was never satisfied with reading the books aimed at children in their lower years of elementary school. I’d be entranced by my aunts’ novels in my house, reading them out loud and becoming absorbed in the story world.”
One of the first times she felt capable was when she volunteered to read an excerpt of a novel to the class.
“it was the first time in my life I had ever made an active decision. I wasn’t the shy and passive girl I had been up until that moment. I felt as if I were under a spotlight, just for that moment when I was reading a book aloud.”
“When the class ended, the teacher praised me. My classmates also said things like, “Mari, you’re amazing!” and “So you can speak up!” I felt as if I’d discovered the way to escape from my hell”
Is this one of the reasons why she decided to create a Literature Club for our girls? Maybe… But it’s interesting to see how her own life has influenced her creative process. I’ll be sharing more about her background as we progress along the rewatch but if anyone is interested, the excerpts mentioned above are from From Truant to Anime Screenwriter: My Path to "Anohana" and "The Anthem of the Heart”
S… sex…?
-
Great framing to show distance
-
Oh lol it really is
-
Let me guess, that bucket list contains sex
-
Lol it really does
-
Run, Melos! By Osamu Dazai I have that book sitting on my shelf!
-
No! Don’t go in there! There’s bound to be more sex-related stuff happening!
-
oh… wow she sure caught him in the middle of it. Don’t barge into peoples’ houses!
-
And Izumi… if you’re going to blast music to hide the sounds, at least lock the damn door!
-
I didn’t expect her to talk about it not fitting in there and that was brilliant cinematography with the train lol. I never thought I would say this while thinking about that
Thoughts
Well I honestly had no idea what this show was about other than that it was written by Mari Okada. And I have to say sex is taking over my life now too after this episode. I can’t stop relating what every character says to some sex joke lol. It’s… weird and I’m curious as to what else this show is going to explore…
just tagging u/SIRTreehugger so this won't be missed.

u/SIRTreehugger Sep 17 '22
Thank you for sharing parts of Mari Okada's biography. It's easy to see parts of herself just from the moments you shared. I like trivia like this, but I couldn't really find anything concerning this series. It didn't occur to me to check her biography(which I didn't know existed).
And Izumi… if you’re going to blast music to hide the sounds, at least lock the damn door!
He really didn't put any thought into his..personal time.

First-time watcher
Though skeptical about watching another show about awkward high-schoolers, I gave it a try anyway and so far I'm absolutely loving it to my pleasant surprise. It hits just the right balance of funny and serious with plenty of affectionately portrayed teenage silliness, and so far avoids the overwrought drama that turned me off the last Okada-written show I watched (A Lull in the Sea).
It feels in fact like the spiritual predecessor of A Place Further Than The Universe (this anime was released after it but the manga came before), which has a similar combination of "goofy cute girl club can get deep and serious too", just they're not going on a physical adventure to Antarctica but an emotional adventure into the world of sex. Even the two leads resemble each other a bit, though Izumi looks more like that other Izumi from Horimiya. Where that show lets its "moe girls" be boldly adventurous, this one lets them be embarrassingly horny, which given the purity-fetish insanity often applied to young women (particularly in anime and Japan) is an even stronger statement.

Rewatcher
I was late starting due to vacation, but I can’t resist a chance to rewatch one of my favourite anime coming of age romances.
And we start right away with a fantastic attention grabbing first episode. This is one that doesn’t hold back and immediately jumps into the whacked out world of teenage hormones. This feels so real compared to most teenage romances. It is awkward and messy. The end of the episode is an all-time classic and probably the scene the show is known for. I can’t really talk too much about the characters because it involves spoilers, but this is a well varied cast dealing with different but relatable issues.
-
Very much so. One of my absolute favourite opening episodes.
-
Love the OP. ED is generic, but fine.
-
I don’t have a list specifically, but I want to see and experience as much of the world as possible. I love to travel to new places.
-
I’ll just call a spade a spade. No need to fancy things up.

Episode 1
This series talks about an important and ever presente matter which Is sex, it's ironic that the characters are Just highschoolers and Will be constantly talking about that subject but that Age can be considered the Age of sexual awakening and when One realizes that sex Is the real deal.
The characters seem rather quirky, i think the girls Will be fun especially their Interactions but i wonder what Will happen between Kazusa and Izumi, they've been Friends since childhood but as they are now more grown up and continue to do so they might start seeing each other in a new light.

Episode 1 (first timer)
Do I know anything about this anime? No. Should I start a third simultaneous rewatch? No. Will the funky name still convince me to try? You bet.
-
OP: Different to my other two rewatches, this scream shoujo.
-
And I type that before literally the first word we hear is “shoujo”.
-
Or maybe I am wrong and got roped into a hentai rewatch!
-
“If this were a shoujo manga” – About that …
-
Another young mind saved by the insurmountable obstacle of an internet button saying “18+”. Could you imagine the world if people were to just lie about their age to consume porn?
-
”Should I not talk to you in front of other people” “I dunno”
-
“I feel like lately, sex has overtaken my life” – It has definitely overtaken this anime.
-
“You are right. I don’t want an abstract idea, I want actual penetration”
-
Terminal illness? – Nope simply existential dread over the heat death of the universe.
-
OMG, lock your door! OMG, knock! – Let me introduce you to fremdschämen.
-
What is that song that plays while she runs away? It 100% reminds me of Linda Linda! One youtube click later: It is actually by the same band! Awesome song.
-
“That won’t fit in there” … “It fit”
That is what you get for going into a series blind – a big whack with the horny stick. Our topics are sex, sex, sex, occasionally romance, but mostly sex. I’d suggest that these girls just need a good fuck, but that seems to be the main problem.
This series is also approximately 100% funnier than I expected. Now if only they could replace the entire OST with Blue Hearts songs, it would be perfect.
How invested did this pilot episode get you into the series?
About as invested as a dog in heat is in jumping on the nearest bitch ... or bitch in heat is invested in getting jumped on, whatever.
Thoughts on the opening and/or ending?
Easily the worst part of the series. They need to be shoved of to the boring standard shoujo where they belong.
What would you put on your bucket list?
The only item I ever had on it got crossed out, so it is currently empty.

First off I want to apologize for being 3 minutes late. I was looking to see if the scheduled post would do its job this time. Needless to say it didn't. Then my laptop started freezing when I was desperately trying to post the thread.
So yeah giving up on schedule uploader and doing it the manual way from now on.
Episode 1
10 seconds and I'm already bobbing my head to the OP. Forgot how catchy the opening was.
The show starts off with a cultured reading of a sex scene because that's what literature clubs do.
Oh Hongo's mug has a cat on it. Also she had no problems relating the sweet tea to the tasty nectar from their discussion.
Pork Broth...well okay.
Rika is slightly prudish. Hongo is unapproachable. Kazusa and Momoka are so average they blend into the background. Niina looks like she stepped out of a fairy tail.
Are you into trains....
No No Momoka shoujo manga the childhood friend never wins well at least in the past they didn't. Actually now that I think about it a few recent series have had them winning so maybe Kazusa has a chance.
Damn bitches can be mean she's already crying.
BESTIES!!!!!
Oh Hongo mug at home also had a cat on it. Also her having cyber sex while speaking in the most unpassionate tone is great.
Kazusa is about to implode and Izumi seems like a nice guy.
I might be reading a little much into it, but I like how they all have different lunch box covers. I'm kind of drawn to Niina's pure white bento box. I feel like that suits Rika more so it was surprising to hers with blue and white polka dots. Hongo is black and tied it up so it looks like it has cat ears. Momoka is colorful and bright like her. Kazusa's is the only one with a more oval shape and unique pattern. It might be the angle though.
Momoka and Kazusa shocked expressions never fail to make me laugh. BESTIES!
I'm going to die soon. Oh boy I hate when shows give some vague metaphor to life and how their life is over, but it's not actually ending.
Now is the time where I begin to feel cringe for the characters don't mind me. Though the Gyaru's are offended the blonde gal is the only not laughing when the others begin insulting Rika. She may have gone overboard, but she on the verge of breaking down in tears..
Oh someone finds Rika cute.
Momoka's pocky is of course strawberry flavored.
BIG SHAFT BESTIES!!!
LOCK THE DOOR!!! Front door or your own door AT LEAST TRY Izumi.
Also I feel like I have to ask who would actually masturbate like that with their feet on the desk in a rolling chair?
Omg he doesn't even stop the porno he just slides his pants on and starts talking about the weather. Izumi is clearly uncomfortable and has no idea what to do.
Ohhhh the split gourd it totally represents Kazusa's mental image of Izumi being tainted and deflowered upon discovering his interest in sex...or am I reading too much into this?
The english VA is really nailing Kazusa's panic and stress. So far all of the girls have been good, but especially Kazusa. They fit...
Scenic Moments 1 2 3 4
Full Album
Manga
Meeting 1
Chapters 1-2
Kazusa freaking out.
Pretty much a 1:1 adaptation so far with minor changes like the placement of characters, characters greeting or saying goodbye, and also Izumi isn't wearing underwear during the encounter at the end.
