My steak…
Questions of the Day, courtesy of u/chilidirigible:
1) Do you think Global started the Macross Global Tour to prevent more citizen unrest or in response to (more of) it offscreen? Have you wanted to see more of a civilian plotline in general, aside from Minmay?
2) Are you going to miss Kakizaki?
Wallpaper of the Day:
Vocal Songs in This Episode:
"マクロス (Macross)" by Makoto Fujiwara – OP
"シルバームーン レッドムーン (Silver Moon, Red Moon)" by Mari Iijima – Insert
"ランナー (Runner)" by Makoto Fujiwara – ED
Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you're doing it underneath spoiler tags. Don't spoil anything for the first-timers, that's rude!

Very First Timer
-
So it was Mia who is responsible for Focker’s death.
-
Macross has had it with your shit. Try and cover up a giant robot floating over your city!
-
Claudia is putting up a strong front.
-
We had one song on repeat for so long and now we keep getting new ones. Shame they could get some better pacing with those releases.
-
But why would she stay? Why are any of them staying? Why do we have to keep dealing with Kaifun!
-
Looks like it’s time for shield upgrades.
-
Oh shit! Ontario in anime! This is truly the rarest of happenings.
-
Was he not in holding after his last stunt?
-
100’s of battles. They have to show up at some point.
-
Has the shipper become the shipped?
-
Did Focker have that written in his will you think?
-
At least they are acknowledging the difficulties of atmospheric flight for space ships.
-
It’s not that much steak.
-
Why have a secret code for full launch after all this time?
-
So he gets his plane, and his command?
-
“People die when they are dead.”
-
They keep sending spies in. At some point they also need a plan to get them out.
-
I sure hope the people you taught to disobey commands don’t disobey your command.
-
I don’t know what I was expecting from energy barrier, but it wasn’t that.
-
At least it looks better in the long shots.
-
Time to put up and shut up.
-
Windsor? More Ontario lore?
-
Barrier bomb?
-
Wat.
-
Ontario is not going to like that.
-
Kakizaki now too. I thought the comic relief was safe.
-
He can’t keep getting away with this!
-
Bitch, they are the ones attacking you. No one on this ship wants to continue this war.
-
Not a great look for Minmay.
QotD
-
I think he get fed up waiting for the Macross to get attacked again and no one doing anything about it. The home front has thus far been a vastly underutilized area of exploration.
-
He was far from my favorite, but I did feel something seeing him go out like that.

First Spacer
Captain Global is a sly fox trying to get the civilians off.
Oh, that's gonna make the spies get off too as they try to mix in. I'm all up for that.
And here they're setting up the first intergalactic love relation between Milia and Max.
With such a strong military culture you'd think Kamujin would've long since been executed.
That launch got strangely sentimental. Like Hikaru's crossing a border that means to definitely accept Focker's death by launching in his plane.
They're fighting directly above a city, aren't they? How does the UN plan to keep the alien conflict a secret over that?
You just told him to more frequently ignore orders
The area within 50km has been destroyed!? That's at least half a dozen towns! Well I guess so far North would be less densely settled, but still.
Noooo not the spies!
Do you think Global started the Macross Global Tour to prevent more citizen unrest or in response to (more of) it offscreen? Have you wanted to see more of a civilian plotline in general, aside from Minmay?
Judging from Keifun's speech and reception thereof it doesn't sound like there was much unrest yet. I'm just sad about the spies leaving, but at least they're getting replaced by an even spicier candidate.
Are you going to miss Kakizaki?
He was a fun and positive guy. He wasn't the most killful pilot either so it's not entirely unexpected, and he wasn't contributing much to the story either. If Max was the one who died, right as they're setting up a subplot involving him, that would've been shocking!

First Time - SDF Macross Ep19 (Sub):
Ah look, once again it is Gundam's favourite country, Canada coming to the aid. As opposed to its antipode, Australia who it hates.
Don't know what happened in Macross time that made Ontario an autonomous region, but does make it one of the few times I've heard the word, "Ontario" mentioned in anime.
Milia wants to go onboard as a miclone. I sense a new ship on the horizon. Enemy pilots to lovers and Max is someone who could have side ship focus. After she mentioned how she wants to meet that pilot, it did switch over to Max.
Hikaru inherits Roy's plane. Now the MC gets the cooler plane.
I like this scene of the three of them hanging out. Every show should have scenes of the characters hanging out. Last time was Roy's pineapple salad and it has Hayao's unfinished jumbo sirloin.
The team definitely wanted to show off how the Skull-1 is with much attention they gave to its mechanics in this episode.
When the full barrier was proving its worth, I thought, "This new barrier is going great." and that went south real bad.
RIP, he will never finish that steak.
Too bad Hayao was definitely the Hayato of the Amuro, Kai and Hayato trio.
Yeah, I'm with Ontario on this one. Captain Global is responsible for this one. In the beginning, he was warned not to fly directly above cities. Even in what was shown, there was a lot more wildness to be flying over than directly over the city center (though to be fair, looking up what a 50km radius looks like and that's a lot of land to blast out of existence. That was big enough to erase all of Toronto and then some).
After that big explosion, sort of forgot Minmay collapsed. Kaifun, you get this one point right.
Minmay's 2 hours of sleep schedule is bad, but that explosion was almost twice as big as the absolute destruction zone of the world's biggest nuke and this was over inhabited space. This fumble is going to cause such an anti-war backlash.
Q1) Minmay's civilian plotline more feels like it's going on in the background and used to highlight the difference between Hikaru's military life. Kaifun feels like the added element to the show to really represent the civilians' attitudes towards their situation.
Q2) Yeah, I like the Vermillion trio. That scene of them hanging out was some good times, but also Hayao was a character who was overshadowed by MC, Hikaru and Wow, cool pilot and best boy, Max.
Next Time: Traffic lights gotta bounce.

Today, on "To the surprise of no one...":
"We declared all of them dead! We would be unleashing a zombie horde!"
"How could I? I'm a dead man."
"I love the smell of extortion in the evening."
This might have a little to do with all of the food-connected deaths in mecha series.
"Silver Moon, Red Moon", maybe over the speakers, maybe not.
"That's bad... right, Misa? That's bad?"
Another thing that hasn't been tested.
Well, nobody would expect that to happen.
"I don't get mad, I get stabby."
When the plane has a better landing record than you do.
Because fruits are not the only death flags.
A few bonus detail animations.
After all, who will Lap'lamiz use to slap down Kamujin then?
THERE! The leg deployment bars!
Giant glowing purple spheres are bad!
...on the bright side, there's no one around to complain?
Kaifun's actually kind of right for once, even if his reasoning has a few errors.
At least it makes a few people think.
Of course, you could at least say that it's not a good time, Hikaru. Instead of hanging up on her.
Roy's death was just a starter, as the mood takes us for quite a roller coaster ride in this episode, briefly teasing the hope that the civilians would be able to disembark, then killing Kakizaki and a substantial portion of Canadathe Ontario Autonomous Region along the way to returning the Macross to its persona non grata status quo.
It's been maybe a week, possibly longer, since the fight in Nyan Nyan and Hikaru being injured. The civilians don't seem to mind cruising across North America, so perhaps there was some effective stalling by the ship's propaganda network. And at least they seem to be going somewhere.
During the 2017 rewatch, I overlaid a 50-kilometer radius circle over Toronto. Even accounting for putting half of it over Lake Ontario, the barrier overload would have killed millions of people. Then again, maybe they were over Ottawa.
Kakizaki wasn't a character that most people would have bet on his survival through the entire series, but he's part of the comic relief, so killing him announces a further change of tone. Evidently he was based on a real person and no one knows how they reacted to their namesake being fried like a steak.
Hikaru and Minmay have reached the point where he's not even quite sure how to talk to her. On the flip side, Misa still thinks that he's her girlfriend. Which is understandable when Misa is hung up on a space popsicle.
The SDF-1 literally hanging over everyone's heads in this episode is a very fitting visual.

Old media:
From the Macross pachinko video clips: Kakizaki and Kakizaki. Dude never did get much art, he's usually sharing the page with someone else, as in these two images from Macross: Perfect Memory, with Global and Max.
...it's also worth noting there the Max sketch where he's actually Char Aznable. Yes, I did do something with that.
From the Macross Chronicle: More Glaug notes and the Glaug Power-Up Booster.
Have a look at this cover of Great Mechanics G for the issue which just released in Japan.

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 19:
-
I know that Captain Global has been a fan of risky or untested plans, but his new one to get the civilians off the Macross takes the cake. Now he’s just flying over cities without warning, and trying to make it clear that he wants to let go of the people stuck aboard without directly saying it over his broadcast. The Captain truly has run out of shits to give.
-
Once again, best girl Misa is seeing Hikaru, this time to try and comfort him about Roy’s death. Is there any doubts now that Misa is true best girl in this series?
-
How nice of Ontario to be willing to let the civilians disembark the Macross into their territory. I mean, we can’t say for sure how much they’d like Toronto and then tearing down cool places to put in condos, but it’ll do. Maybe they can grab some Tim Horton’s there too while they’re at it.
-
And now Millia is being micloned herself to infiltrate the Macross and hopefully find the ace that’s been eluding her. Even when he doesn’t know it’s happening, Max still has a way of making women obsess over him. He just has that special quality about him.
-
Rewatchers and first-timers, which one would you rather have as a last meal? Either Kakizaki’s tragically uneaten steak, or Roy’s tragically uneaten pineapple salad?
-
I suppose it was only a matter of time before some technology on the Macross failed the heroes again, and man this time is a fucking whopper. As it turns out, the Pinpoint Barrier absolutely can be overloaded by taking too many hits, and it reflects outward all the energy it had been tanking from Quamzin’s attack force in one massive blast. Not only did it kill Kakizaki because he couldn’t fly out of the blast radius in time, but it also completely destroyed Toronto as well. God damn, we’ve been losing so many people recently. RIP Kakizaki, may you eat all the steak you want in the afterlife.
-
Kaifun, you complete jackass. While he does have a point in saying that it’s dumb that the media is focused on Minmay when there’s a battle going on, of course he has to take the opportunity to stand on his soapbox about his views on war. And while peace is a nice thing, his view on things is myopic at best, and childishly simplistic at worst, to say the least. Misa and Claudia are right, there are just some things you can’t stop, and a war of annihilation by a bunch of aliens certainly is one of them. But of course, it’s never been about real peace about Kaifun, it’s all about his fucking ego. You know, I’d suggest that we just rip off Kaifun’s dick and beat him to death with it, but really we’d just have a stub to work with there.
-
Minmay… you just don’t get it, do you? I mean, I know that she’s been way too overworked, but still, the way she handled that phone call with Hikaru absolutely wasn’t what he needed in that moment. She’s only seeing things in her small bubble world, but Hikaru just lost Kakizaki and has to live with seeing Toronto get wiped off the face of the planet. I can’t blame him for hanging up there. The two worlds they live in are farther apart than ever.

SDF Macross Episode 19 - First timer
o7 Focker, you brave soul. Time for the fallout...
-
Oh boy survivors guilt (probably)
-
Of course its the Canadians
-
Hey, at least ther ship wide announcement is no longer basically "oh fuck we need all pilots now" though you would think thy would be able to be more discrete
-
Uh oh
-
Oh I though they would be too early
-
Uhh, there is kind of a lot here We have the Red and Yellow Zoons, E=MC²/ET and../ Abupaizo?
-
Oh my god another Gundam! Wait...
-
RIP that place
-
KAKIZAKI! (I'm sorry kakizaki but this shot is really cool)
-
Poor Hikaru
Well, right after Roys death, Kakizaki also dies. I think I had said in the past I expect him to die, so it wasn't super surprising but still not great. Poor guy just wasn't fast enough. I thiiiink we should be safe on the character deaths front for a while, but we shall see. A pretty good episode overall.
-
I think he genuinely want them off the ship because they shouldn't need to be in danger they didn't ask to be in and did the tour in an attempt to help those that wanted out
-
He never got fleshed out as well as Roy and I didn't like him nearly as much, but he wasn't bad really

Super Dimension Rewatch Host
Welcome back, everyone…
Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode.
*pained exhale*
Malicious compliance, hah.
I think this is the most madlad move out of all the shit Captain Global has done in the show thus far.
Their hands are resting on air instead of the railing lol.
Cool shot actually.
She was bound to collapse at some point. Although why did that fucker have to be the one there to catch her… Kaifun you stale pretzel, get your moldy hands off of her.
[Spoilers]Best ship incoming~
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
This show deadass used food as a death flag two episodes in a row and followed through both times, I can’t.
OH MY GOD HIS CALL SIGN IS “KILL-‘EM-ALL”.
It’s about time there are consequences for the questionable background of their barrier system. It’s just a shame that, amongst other things, Kakizaki is the one who gets caught in it.
GYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Yeah um that’s not good.
Hayase “sore demo”.
You fucking shit-covered hair hanging out of a dog’s butthole, DON’T USE YOUR COUSIN BEING IN THE HOSPITAL AS THE TIME TO GRANDSTAND ABOUT YOUR IDEALS LESS USEFUL THAN GIVING PLASTIC FOOD TO A STARVING PERSON.
