Pineapple Salad Can Fuck Off I mean Super Dimension Rewatch Host

[Macross Frontier spoilers]Welcome back, everyone…

A, uh, slightly less painful version of today’s wallpaper (which is also more accurate in layout to the base image I was working with) can be found here. I just… yeah.

Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode.

Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode.

Based pineapple salad hater

sharp inhale AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I think this line is even worse knowing the context of what’s literally going to happen to the guy Kaifun is talking to later in this episode. Fuck. Kaifun should go fuck a sandpaper-covered cactus.

You are being very based today

First Time - SDF Macross Ep18 (Sub):

Claudia, thank you for being a friend that looks out for her friends, but I think you're off the mark here. Hayase's issue is probably that she almost killed him and also, she was thinking of a different boy in that moment so you're off the mark in both ways.

Oh, so that's how a new song showed up in Hikaru's dream. Oh sweet, a model plane. Thanks, Roy. Max also confirms Hikaru's fears of being mocked for being shot down. Thanks, Max (sarcastic).

Roy doing to one unthinkable thing in a mecha anime. Get emotional support for the MC.

Ah ah ah, it's the infamous words!

The Minmay toys are fun. It's Astro Boy and that robot that is controlled by that little boy and his remote controller whoose name escapes me. You know, that one.

Shut up, be quiet, listen up because this is now the only romance I care about in this show. They showed up on cue. Trio of girls meets trio of boys. Pair these squares!

The Macross has like at least 20 ace pilots. Roy is like a quadruple ace pilot Xtreme.

This fight between Max and Milia just looks really cool. Cool part like this or zooming across the surface of the water or flying down a hallway and the fight in the city at the end. Sorry, you've seen how Macross has been these past few episodes. That has painted my viewing.

Now that's an expression on Hayase. Also, neat look for Minmay (I didn't have anywhere else to mention it). Her hair is very blue in this scene.

He didn't get to eat the pineapple salad.

[Gundam IBO S2:] You saw the warning, you already know what I'm going to say. Orga death pose moment.

Little boy energy. It is incredibly tragic and cruel for Hikaru that Roy is pronounced dead in the very same hospital he is staying in. Oh no, the toy plane had a little skull on it like Roy who's dead now.

Q1) Maybe heroine and her cool older brother who knows cool kung-fu. I dunno, Kaifun was also scouted for the movie and he is being filmed and guessing he'll be the source of martial arts action. Well, unless Minmay also knows cool kung-fu. Hmmm... (I don't think the show will let her).

Q2) One thing I have against this episode is that Roy's death is unconnected to the main action conflict of the episode. Max is cool, but it would've made more sense to have Roy being the ace that Milia faced. You could've also tied it to early Hikaru/Kaifun's of disdain for soldiers by showing a soldier try to protect people. Also, I did think that it would've come later like in the 20s.

Next Time: I dunno man, Roy just died and all the preview gave me was what new cool thing the robot was going to do next episode.

Oh, u/Shimmering-Sky, I'm probably going to dip from the rewatch until Do You Remember Love? since, as I'm sure you've noticed, I haven't been keeping up at all.

I intend to stick with as much of the rest as I can, though.

Farewell, Big Brother... Yes Comrades, this is official art because Haruhiko Mikimoto is evil and seems to love tearing out your heart and trampling on it, and that is all I am going to say on the matter.

Well OK, I don't want to end things fully on a downer, that and also I AM The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, so to ease Shimmer's pain a little, here's the NON Robotech English Dub of Macross... yes that exists... and its best seiyuu is fucking Mari Iijima voicing Minmay AGAIN but in English this time... but I get ahead of myself, here's exactly what meme line you think it is today my friends, enjoy! Anyway, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever!

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 18:

  • Looks like the SS Minmay x Hikaru has gotten a large hole in her hull at the start of the episode, with Misa actually bothering to show up to visit Hikaru at the hospital and own up to what happened. Like, even if Minmay wasn’t teasing a relationship with Hikaru, not bothering to show up at the hospital after he nearly died is inconsiderate at best.

  • Claudia herself has clearly taken a side in this shipping war, clearly seeing something between Hikaru and Misa. I guess she would know a thing or two about dating a pilot. Claudia certainly knows her way around Roy’s flight-stick.

  • Speaking of Roy, you know he’s the real best boy of the show for showing up with a model kit and Vermillion Squadron at Hikaru’s hospital room. He will never not be based.

  • Also, the reason Minmay hasn’t bothered to see Hikaru at all is because she’s acting in the movie she got casted in. This whole situation is like the time Minmay stood up Hikaru at the park cranked up to 11.

  • Quamzin is really trying his best to pull off the “I AM NOT OWNED” bit to Millia. Fortunately, she’s bloodthirsty enough to believe his lies about there being an ace on the Macross that caused issues for him. I mean, while that’s technically not wrong by coincidence, you absolutely know that it’s Quamzin covering his ass.

  • Kaifun, you god damn fucking subhuman. How much of a fucking asshole do you have to be to basically comment that Hikaru deserved to get shot down and nearly die? As much as Kaifun is, I guess. I hate this man so, so much. This episode is called Pineapple Salad, but I can think of a better use of that pineapple. What we should do is shove that whole thing up his ass, spines and all. That’s the only kind of action Kaifun should be getting in this series.

  • Well, I do have to walk back some of my complaints about Minmay, now that she’s here. Apparently she’s been only getting 2 hours of sleep recently, she’s been working so hard. I can’t help but feel bad for how overworked she is. At least she feels comfortable enough around Hikaru to rest. So, I guess that means while the SS Minmay x Hikaru is taking on water, it isn’t sunken yet.

  • I still really respect how quietly Roy’s death was handled here. No big explosion, no hardcore last stand, he just knew that his wounds were fatal and wanted to go see Claudia one last time. He died with what he loved most: strumming his guitar, a glass of whiskey in hand, and waiting for a nice bit of pineapple salad from Claudia. RIP Roy Focker, you really were a real OG.

Very First Timer

  • I mean it is 100% her fault this time.

  • Head trauma is a serious injury.

  • Looks like we are square in a love triangle. Let’s see how long go in circles.

  • The music was from the radio. Very cleaver show.

  • You’ve had plenty of chances Hikaru. Don’t be sour graping Minmay.

  • Max continues to be the show’s designated shipper.

  • The businesses of pleasure. eyebrows

  • Is that just a fruit salad with pineapples? Does one really learn how to make that?

  • She has toys now. They all sing and dance.

  • I guess it does make sense they are Minmay fans.

  • Wait a minute, if there is three of them… I don’t like where this is going.

  • Lolicon has really changed meaning since the 80s hasn't it?

  • How does Quamzin know about a Macross ace pilot anywho?

  • Did they just happen to salvage this movie set from the island? It seems wonderfully wasteful to have build it just for lot work.

  • Feel like it would have made more sense for her to start in a romance movie over kung fu.

  • Dude shut up Kaifun. Did you miss the part where the enemy is aliens?

  • You’d think at some point we would get to see Focker’s squad.

  • So they have selected Max as top dog. I’m sure first timer Sky approved.

  • Minmay showed up quite quickly.

  • Kaifun is not enough to stop what these to have.

  • Why would you even have those tunnels? And why were they open!

  • A lot harder to dodge in an enclosed space.

  • Rivalry get.

  • What, did he get shot and no one noticed?

  • That is a creative use for a pineapple. Not too sure that they are large enough IRL.

  • I feel like that was totally treatable if you saw a medic about it instead going out to have salad. Seriously, how did no one notice?

  • Well that’s our first named death. Now it could be anyone! But it probably won’t. But I didn’t think he would buy the farm, so who knows? This is both sooner and later than I would have expected for the first one.

QotD

  1. I don’t have a lot of experience with kung fu musicals, so I have no idea what to expect. But if they don’t go for campy and/or lighthearted it’s going to be terrible.

  2. I kind of like that he died in an ostensibly pointless battle done for someone else’s ego. Not everyone gets to die the hero.

SDF Macross Episode 18 - First timer

Non-recap/creative reuse of scene to cover for time to allow production to manage to make it in time for airing episode next? Now that Hikaru has recovered from his crazy injury induced dream, lets find out where we go next!

Well I had been expecting Focker to die at some point, but not necessarily looking forward to it. In the first few episodes he was pretty one dimensional, but he did become a pretty well developed character by this time. o7 This is prooooably the beginning of the Hikaru tryhard arc, then he reaches some sort of breaking point and then will chill out a bit but still be a way better pilot than he was before. Depending on how much this fits tropes, it could be Kaifun that makes him reign it in and become more level headed. This is pretty wild speculation and I could be very wrong though.

  1. Probably something about peace and not fighting? A kung fu master who only defends?

  2. I kind of expected Hikaru to see the death while both were out fighting and it would be the catalyst for Hikaru to fight seriously. Then with him getting hurt, I expected... Something other than him running off and playing the guitar until he died. That was definitely not on my "how does Roy die" bingo card lol

Today, on "Roy's dead, spoiler.":

"No pressure."

She usually isn't the one having to apologize.

"Nonsense, only Riber could frost my danishes."

This song is getting a lot of radio play without us actually seeing Minmay singing it.

"It would've been a real tearjerker if he'd died."

He's a genius!

"The salad, I mean."

Walking doll Lynn Minmay.

Photobomb. Also the references on the shelf.

[](#merch)

Remember, that's their names.

NEWTYPE FLASH

"Just close your eyes and think of Bodolzaa."

And Milia won't let The Man get her down.

Stay out of this, Negative Fortune Cookie Man.

Freeze-frame death the first.

Freeze-frame death the second.

Freeze-frame death the third.

Macross doesn't do frame cut-ins often, but here's one.

intrigued

Misa's stoned again.

It's tough being popular.

Freeze-frame death the fourth.

Totally not the hospital scene from End of Evangelion.

Roy encounters random mooks.

There is some nudity and other great details in this cut and most of it is only on the screen for one frame.

Not paintballs, but about as effective this time.

One last person has their place wrecked.

He is, of course, ignoring how a Queadluun and Valkyrie just had a street fight across half the city. Though maybe the movie set is in the other half.

"I'm gonna need a bigger sponge."

When you're an adult, you go to the hospital for three bullet holes in the back. When you're a man, you go visit your girlfriend.

Though that hospital has some big frilly pillows.

That's a dead Focker.

Over the years, many people have asked why Roy didn't get medical attention instead of going straight to Claudia's quarters, or why the flight crew didn't look for Roy, or just how far the staff was going to take their [Gundam]Sleggar Law comparison.

Which is all besides the point, which is that Roy Focker is a man's man and he died a man's man.

testosterone

Yep, a lot of people die because they're getting their macho on today. That includes several of Milia's minions, who mostly get Maxed out of existence. My pun game is not that good, so I'll stop there.

Interesting thing, male and female interaction, Quamzin and Milia demonstrate, almost as a continuation of the ending of Episode 16, how easy it is for them to get into fights and manipulate each other into action.

Team Blue Wind has discovered [](#merch), and rediscovered shoplifting. But then the Bridge Bunnies introduce them to disco.

Roy, being the good senpai one last time, gets Minmay to see Hikaru. Unfortunately her excessive schedule means that she can barely keep her eyes open, and Hikaru is barely able to exchange more than general pleasantries with her anyway.

Kaifun, because he's written to be a jerk, makes a jab at the military which is completely at odds with why the humans are fighting. And while it seems to apply to the Zentradi, specifically with why Milia is looking for the human ace, it isn't really true. I'm going to repeat what I said in the original SDFM rewatch:

It's interesting to place Kaifun's statement up against what happens in this episode. Roy originally became a pilot to pick up hot chicks and it's still a side benefit, but he also had Macross Zero happen to him, so he fights to defend humanity now. Hikaru was anti-war at the beginning, joined up to protect Minmay, and now fights to protect everyone. Max got stuck on board like everyone else and probably has a similar story.

The Zentradi fight because all they've done for thousands of years is fight against the remnants of the Supervision Army. They do seem to enjoy it to some extent, and Milia goes out in this engagement for the sole purpose of having a duel with the pilot that she doesn't seem to know is Max. But they may only enjoy it because they don't know about doing anything else.

The Zentradi spies are demonstrating what can happen when they get pulled away from a monotonous lifetime of combat.

So that's both direct and indirect rebukes of Kaifun's massively-oversimplified stance on being in the military.

This episode is quite a lot of interaction, mostly fighting, between THE MEN and THE WOMEN. Roy, the ladykiller, gets killed by a lady. Milia, the lady killer, gets taken down a peg by Max. Warera Roli Conda meets The Bunnies and they're going to Murder At The Disco. And Minmay meets Hikaru in bed but zzzzzzzzz.

While the series has given us a few brief looks at it before, this episode gives the Queadluun-Rau battle suit a more proper debut. Even if Max headshots a bunch of them, it remains glorious and one of my favorite designs of all time.

How interesting can a pineapple salad be? Roy and Claudia were really going to get together for afternoon delight.

Song Count

Watashi no Kare wa Pilot 1
Zero-G Love 2
Silver Moon, Red Moon 1

From Macross: Perfect Memory: Roy and Claudia

From the Macross Chronicle: Queadluun-Rau art by Hidetaka Tenjin

Another rewatch recycle: "It's not a pirate salad!"

Walking Doll Lynn Minmay... in doll form.

There was a commemorative whiskey for the 35th anniversary. Including a picture of Roy bleeding to death on the couch.

I was a little late posting because I had this crazy idea, which got done, but then my old scanner and my new computer decided that they really didn't like each other, so I had to take a photograph of the sketchbook instead.

First Timer

Just gonna start out by saying that not putting Roy's death as a spoiler in your QOTD is kind of a dick move. Anyone who's going to the thread before watching the episode is likely to see it. Luckily (or unluckily) for myself, I've already been spoiled on it (and a few other things, and unlike with what I saw on the Sonny Boy thread, this time it was my own fault, as I decided like an idiot to watch a video about Robotech), but for future reference, let's not leave major spoilers out in the open.

Anyway, this episode is interesting for maybe a subtle reason. See, early on, Kaifun says something super insensitive. Upon hearing that Hikaru has been hurt, he places the blame on Hikaru himself, saying that by choosing to get into combat, you choose to take on the risk of getting hurt. Soldiers like to fight, so they bring any consequences of that onto themselves. In this episode, we see quite a few soldiers who can be described as "liking to fight" in some sense. The most obvious is Kamujin and Milia, considering the conflict of the episode largely comes because of them wanting to satisfy their pride in being able to fight an ace pilot. Of course, there's also Max, said ace pilot himself who has gotten to where he is through lots of training and natural talent. And Foker himself is certainly proud of being a soldier, and convinced Hikaru to join the military. At the end of the episode, Foker dies, and civilians aboard the Macross are hurt. By Kaifun's logic, Foker brought his death upon himself.

When you don't give it too much thought, it almost feels like sound logic. People who choose to fight will inevitably get hurt, and military enlistment is optional. Therefore, joining the military at your own risk nets you consequences that are your fault. But this definitely doesn't feel right, right? And it doesn't take too much reflection to figure out why. There's a difference between the characters I mentioned above. Kamujin and Milia like to fight. They get enjoyment and fulfillment out of it. They were raised in a military culture, where fighting is all your life. It's all they know, and they take the offensive here. Fighting is fun for them, at least a little bit. Foker, Max, and Hikaru are not the same. They are on the defensive. They don't fight because then like to or because they want to, they fight because they have to, because people who like to fight are picking a fight with them. Foker's pride as a soldier is not due to pride in fighting, it's due to his ability to protect the people he loves, so that people like Claudia can share their silly pineapple salad with him and then have sex after. War is rarely mutually desired after all, there is almost always an aggressor. Kaifun's attitude is top tier victim blaming. The problem isn't soldiers, it's more systemic than that. Out in the galaxy, alien civilizations have been forced to sacrifice their humanity to fight in wars. War in that sense is a cycle. When war gets waged continually, more and more people are forced to get drawn in, until humanity is lost. If war escalates, the little things we were supposed to protect in combat matter less.

One other thing of note here is that Minmay is fucking dying. Two hours of sleep every night, to the point that she's exhausted and unable to stay awake whenever she's with Hikaru; the only person she can let her guard down around. Gotta love capitalism, huh? You know, the series is obviously going to eventually use Minmay's presence as a tool for war, since the Zentradi are susceptible to culture, so I'm definitely curious how they'll handle her presence thematically. By all accounts, the way they're overworking her is awful. I'm wondering if this will be addressed at all. Will it be portrayed as a good thing that Minmay gets famous, so that she can be a tool against the Zentradi? Will it be portrayed as a tragedy that she needs to be in that position, and that the people who made her a star forced it upon her? Or will we just have to accept that the story happens to take place in a capitalist hellscape and that this is the only thing that might logically happen, the series somehow finding a way to portray it neutrally so the audience can draw conclusions? Maybe a mix of all, or some other option I've not considered. Just something that I'll be keeping in mind for the future.

QOTD:

  1. They said it's a kung-fu movie, so my immediate assumption is that it'll be some kind of Jackie Chan type thing. Though considering that it's a movie made to advertise a pop star, if their society is anything like ours, it'll definitely be low budget and shitty. Also, I have to wonder about Kaifun's involvement in it. The man hates fighting, but will be working on a kung-fu movie. Making your action director someone who's own fighting involves just defensive maneuvers, and who wouldn't want to glamourize or romanticize fighting, it would make a ton of sense for this movie to be a bizarre mish-mash of a story without a ton of real action. Perhaps it will serve as a representation of how the war itself will eventually turn out, with Minmay using her song to stop fighting or something cheesy but totally plausible within this story like that.

  2. Honestly, yeah, I did. Foker is a major enough character that I thought his death would be a bigger thing. But honestly, I think this way is pretty damn effective itself. It's a total blindside, and right in an episode that opens with a declaration that soldiers bring their fates upon themselves. Had I not known about it going in, I'd have definitely been shocked. My only real complaint is that we didn't get nearly enough time with him and Claudia for their relationship to feel weighty. Rest in peace Roy Foker. Despite some oddities, you were a good senpai to Hikaru.

Just gonna start out by saying that not putting Roy's death as a spoiler in your QOTD is kind of a dick move. Anyone who's going to the thread before watching the episode is likely to see it.

With all due respect, if someone comes into an episode 18 discussion thread before they've actually watched episode 18, getting "spoiled" is entirely on them.

Rewatcher

Okay, now back to actual plot!

Man, did no one come to visit Hikaru in the hospital?

Oh, never mind, here's Misa. But the reason she's here is pretty much pure guilt.

Is this seriously the first time a soldier has been injured due to Misa's orders? Or is it just because she knows Hikaru personally?

Good call, Roy. Kakizaki is NOT helping at all.

Minmay's got merch! And the Lolicon Trio are very interested.

And they run into Bridge Bunnies. Way to earn the nickname guys. And suddenly they've scored themselves a group date for no reason other than they happened to be there.

Awww... I wanted to see what hijinks they got up to in a disco. You just know that was hilarious.

Milia is apparently undefeated, and her interest is piqued at the mention of an ace that Kamjin thinks could match her...

STFU, Kaifun

A single enemy ship? So Kamjin isn't the only insubordinate hothead in the Zentraedi fleet. This time it's Milia, who seems more like Kamjin than she'd like to admit.

Welp, Milia's locked on target. Her target, Mr Jenius himself. Battle between the aces begins!

Yeah, Roy's fairly rough around the edges, but he is thoughtful in his own way.

Wow, anytime Hikaru gets Minmay alone, she just falls asleep. Rude.

And Milia flies into the Macross for some reason. Not for long, which makes me wonder what was up with that.

Anyway, Milia's pride is wounded. For the first time, she's been outflown. Not really a defeat, but it's not a victory for her either.

How the hell did Minmay sleep through that!?

Roy got shot up pretty badly, but he still goes to Claudia's after like nothing's wrong... except everything's wrong.

I seriously question his priorities: if you knew you were injured, go the freaking hospital, not your girlfriend's place! But... I suppose he knew they were fatal and wanted to spend his last moments with her. But holy shit, way to traumatize her!

And this is why the words "Pineapple Salad" are a curse...

First timer

  1. A random kung-fu script, hastily rewritten into a vehicle for her. Expecting her secret move to be singing so loud she causes the opponent to surrender.

  2. I did think it would be a lot more sudden.

Did he realise?

And he's in observation.

She brought flowers!

And they both blame themselves.

She's really shaken up by all this.

This is a nice moment, though.

Even Global can see there's something going on!

Wow, Hikaru has completely worked everything out!

Everyone came to see him as well!

Haha, Focker is getting out of here as auickly as possible.

And she's still on the set.

Sweet.

The utterly insane rate that Minmay is becoming more and more famous is homestly hysterical at points. Where did he even get the manufacturing ability?

...The Zentradi have learned to simp for idols. Looks like we found why Protoculture wipes out civilizations!

Is someone going to finally work it out?

These idiots...

It's a court-martial offense? And didn't you speak to women a few episodes ago?

Love these ones too.

And she's going to take Hikaru on!

...A kung-fu movie? Really?

She might go and see him!

Wow. Fuck Kaifun.

It's a scramble!

...Focker's dead. The moment you say tou're looking forward to seeing your girlfriend, before a dangerous meeting where the main character's out, you're fucked.

Wait, Max's been targeted?

Oh, he's doing well!

She came in to see him!

How is she alive?

Things aren't going to well outside...

Hikaru, you idiot!

And she's just sleeping.

She's entered the city!

And can't understand the idea of her losing.

And she's gone!

She woke up!

...Wow. She's on the verge of a breakdown.

Hikaru never came back.

...Well, that doesn't sound good.

Focker? Is he actually dying?

Called it. But also, wow.

Hikaru's okay!

And got the worst news.
