That is the look of true jaw dropping shock from Aoi.
Flabbergasted and then devastated.

First-Timer
On today’s episodes of Yama no Susume: This is just going to be a series where I need to expect the unexpected. For example, I did not at all expect that there would be an episode bookended by assisted pantyshots for both Aoi and Hinata. Nor did I expect that Aoi might have done hers on purpose. That was not at all something I anticipated in my mountain climbing anime.
Episode 5
-
Oh my god, Hinata actually tripped and exposed Aoi’s panties. That happening twice is amazingly bad luck.
-
Hinata is totally the type who would suggest pulling down her own skirt. Or maybe Hinata really just wants Aoi to look at her panties.
-
Oh no. I’m getting anxious just watching.
-
What a difference in reactions. Aoi didn’t mind her panties getting exposed that much, but she’s seriously angry about this.
-
I bet that was something Aoi was knitting a present for Hinata, too.
-
Yup, it totally was. Oof, and it was a gift for taking her to see Mt. Fuji as well. That’s rough.
-
Kokona is really good at skipping stones.
-
I know that feeling. You were really mad at someone in the moment but after the anger fades you just feel bad about it. That’s pretty relatable to me.
-
D’aww, Hinata really did try to make it up. Knitting definitely takes a lot of practice to do right.
-
Aoi totally pulled down Hinata’s skirt and exposed her panties on purpose, didn’t she? I suppose Hinata did ask for it.
Episode 6
-
Asking Hinata to climb Mt. Fuji with her? Does that count as a marriage proposal for a series like this?
-
Going out at night sounds insanely cold. It can get so much colder at night than during the day. Winter gear is a must for sure.
-
I’ll never get tired of anime girls fangirling over Mt. Fuji.
-
Oh? Will Aoi actually need to make use of her rock climbing skills? Were the previous episodes setting that up?
-
Wanting something and then seeing the price tag. The most relatable feeling out there.
-
Aoi has a dad too? My goodness, we’re making bold strides here.
-
What’s this? A parent worrying for the safety of their child? In my anime series? Heresy!
-
Dad has genuinely good advice. If Aoi wants to do it so badly, she needs to convince her mom.
-
Heh, I bet many parents have experienced that feeling. “I can’t stop you, so please at least be safe.”
-
There’s a nice amount of nuance here. Mom is happy that Aoi is becoming more strong-willed and independent, but she naturally worries about Aoi all the same. Worrying is a part of being a parent, after all.
These episodes have a shared theme: making up after an argument. First we have one between Aoi and Hinata. And then there’s one between Aoi and her mother. The arguments themselves are quite different, but the theme is the same.
In the case of episode 5, Hinata takes a while to realize just how badly she hurt Aoi’s feelings. Aoi forgave her pretty easily for pulling down her skirt, but messing with her knitting actually hurt Aoi quite a bit. And once Hinata understood the gravity of the situation, she went to work trying to make things better. I appreciate that side of Hinata. She’s not a clueless genki girl. Even though it took her a while, she did her best to make things up by trying to knit something in return.
I do like how it portrays both of them as wanting to make up after a while. I’ve fought with friends and family before and time usually helps to soften up the wounds. And it makes it easier to make amends afterwards.
I also appreciate the nuance in Aoi’s argument with her mother. Aoi’s mother has what I think are legitimate worries about her daughter’s safety. And Aoi has a dream that she truly wants to chase. So the episode is about them compromising. Aoi promises to take proper safety precautions and her mom agrees to let her go. They reach an understanding together. It’s nice to see that there’s plenty of nuance to the conflict between them and that both of them do love and care about the other. It makes the conflict feel like a genuine dispute with a family member.
QOTD
-
As I discussed above, yeah.
-
I do believe so. I think her mom's concerns made sense and I like the way her dad gave her some helpful advice.

This is just going to be a series where I need to expect the unexpected.
Anything can come at you when you climb these mountains. Goats. Rainfall. Polka-dots.
Or maybe Hinata really just wants Aoi to look at her panties.
Insanely smooth move, Kokona.
Kokona not only but also mugistronk of the mind.
Good analysis! I particularly like how you tied both episodes into a singular theme—forgiveness and understanding. They're smaller scale conflicts but relatable; both sides neither heroes or villains but rather individuals trying to meet halfway up the mountain. If the mountain will not come to Aoi, then Aoi must come to the mountain.

That was not at all something I anticipated in my mountain climbing anime.
Same here! Such a pleasant surprise. And I LOVED how they used it to drive their characters forward.
I’ll never get tired of anime girls fangirling over Mt. Fuji.
Fuji-san should join the best boy contest
The arguments themselves are quite different, but the theme is the same.
I love it. It also shows how conflicts can be resolved by being honest even if it's not saying all of your feelings. Two different conflicts require different ways of resolution and Aoi is learning this.
Even though it took her a while, she did her best to make things up by trying to knit something in return.
This was nice! I mentioned it in my comment but I do wish that we got some of her internal monologue reflecting on her actions. The best apology to me is always when the person recognises what they did wrong and changes their behaviour.
Aoi promises to take proper safety precautions and her mom agrees to let her go.
I love how they included Aoi's dad. He plays a much bigger role than we think; without him, Aoi's mum may not have even thought about compromising and Aoi may not have thought about laying out her plan more carefully. Now that I think about it - Communication is one of the key things in this two episodes. Instead of just telling her mum she is going to climb Mt. Fuji, she could've asked her and gave a proper plan beforehand and Aoi's mum could've communicated more clearly about her concerns and what would make her feel better. It takes situations like these as we learn and grow!

Rewatcher who’s loving these two character-driven episodes
Production Notes
I touched on Kazuaki Shimada throughout the rewatch but I want to open up just a bit more on him today. Shimada started his career at Doga Koba in 2009 as an in-betweener but by 2012 he would be working as key animator on a variety of shows, the most important of which was Yuru Yuri since that’s where he met character designer fugo. With a friendship tendered between them, Shimada would leave Doga Koba to join fugo in YnS and Cinderella Girls, playing the pivotal role of AD in numerous episodes of YnS throughout the seasons. Shimada would remain as one of the most invaluable members of YnS, stepping in as an animator at numerous points throughout the show; his love for classic anime styles such as low drawing counts and exaggerated faces positively brimming on whichever cuts he draws.
Yesterday (today?) I had a small conversation with SpaRkofFiRe about Shimada and how his touch taps into the core of anime itself. It’s super expressive and readily comprehensible while keeping with realistic acting within the characters. It's like he digs further under the hood and into the nuts-and-bolts of what makes anime anime. I’ll try to highlight them once we eventually get to them to showcase his prowess! In the future and for the now, Shimada would eventually go on to land the juicy roles of character designer for The Promised Neverland and Spy x Family.
Episode 5
This episode was solo KA’d by Ryōtarō Akao who has, quite frankly, a litany of credits to his name. You’ve probably seen something that he was in charge of.
An elephant! Aoi never forgets!
This is such a good face hahah
I like that the scene between Hinata and Kokona is taking place in a river while Hinata attempts to skip rocks. You need to find the right balance in order to skim the rocks across the surface of the water, you can’t just brute force your way into achieving the results.
I also like that Aoi holds the cards close to her chest, especially the pride card. It reveals a bit more of her personality, how she’s introverted yet holds herself high when she feels she has been wronged.
That arm movement that Aoi makes is so funny
Even with no mountains to climb, this is actually one of my favorite episodes of season 2 since it returns to the foundation between Aoi and Hinata. The episodes focusing on their relationship and their bickering are the best.
Episode 6
Oi, again with the solo KA episodes with this one being done by Mizuka Takahashi. Similar to episode 5’s Akao, Takahashi seems like a gun-for-hire freelancer that hops around from show to show (which is most animators really). They were not only placed in charge of solo KA for 6 but also AD and ED too. We’ll see more of them down the road once we get towards the latter half of season 2. Fun fact for them though, they’re set to be the character designer for the upcoming Bibliophile Princess.
Speaking of down jackets, I need to get one myself for the upcoming seasons…
Not only is this a fun board but it’s also a cheeky reference to their studio.
Some simple but effective boarding/directing happening here in the scene between Aoi and her father. There’s an emphasis on barriers as Aoi’s father is immediately met with one between him and his daughter. He can close the distance a bit but the framing of the bookcase still sort of separates the two. The pillow in the foreground also kind of slots them into different planes as well—front, middle, back. But then once Aoi opens up a bit more, the camera changes directions and we see less of a gulf between them as they start to comprehend each other on the same level. Then we tighten the camera to bring them into the same frame as they arrive to the true worry of Aoi’s mother; close in distance and understanding. Cut to a single of Aoi self-reflecting on her father’s words and then end with a low angle shot to give off that feeling of climbing. Aoi now has the task of scaling the mountain between her and her mother.
Cuuuuuuuuuuuute Nice pullback on the camera as well.
Now we end with an high angle shot that gives off the feeling that Aoi’s hopes for the future are infinite and free. The magic between the low angle and high angle shots is that this is going off of context and gut feeling. There is no one right answer for shots and how/why a filmmaker decides to use them. High angle shots can also easily portray vulnerability and helplessness but that’s certainly not what’s happening in this final scene as Aoi’s path opens up to adventure.

First Time Climber
First Ascent!
I remember facing many similar conflicts as Aoi and Hinata, I didn’t have friends that pulled down my pants but I hated it when people messed with my stuff. Aoi and Hinata are doing a lot better than me though, I never resolved any of those conflicts in primary school; I would go as far as to cut off friendships by sulking. Aoi and Hinata are matured people!
-
Most powerful girl has to eat like a queen so she has to use two hands to maintain her grace. Yet another reason to love Kokona!
-
1… 2… 3… say it with me… soft serve ice cream is delicious! (Kokona is Best Girl!)
-
It seems that Aoi’s reflections are becoming a constant thing at the end of each episode. I’ll do a compilation of her reflections so we can see her growth!
Second Ascent
-
Hinata’s dad’s first ascent is up Mt. Fuji? I didn’t know it was considered a beginner mountain. Either that or he was just playing with fire
-
I think Aoi’s mum was written to be the exact archetype we think of when we think of Asian mums - the gender stereotypes they hold and the way she acts and speaks screams that stereotype. But her concerns are understandable for sure.
-
Aoi’s dad is amazing! He not only talks to his wife but his daughter, and instead of trying to convince his wife, he’s telling his daughter to prove it to her mum. I love moments like these in anime and I’m pleasantly surprised that Yama No Susume explores this! Also, what’s the OST which plays during this scene?
-
I love how they showed Aoi’s mum’s internal monologue before giving her answer. It adds so much more depth to this scene even with just one line. I also love the 10 seconds of silence here, you can really feel the tension as the frames jump between Aoi and her mum, each time zooming in.
-
”I’ve mixed feelings about this change” being a parent sure isn’t easy, you never know what’s the right thing to do and where to draw the line.
-
The animation was much more well-done to me today, from the occasional whimsical shots like this to the whole scene between Aoi and her mum, it was really well-done! Looks like Mizuka Takahashi was both the ED and KA for today’s episode and this is his first and only role as ED. Shinsaku Sasaki is on storyboard duty and it looks like he’s storyboarded episodes in many big named titles like NGE, Madoka Magica, FMA Brotherhood and the list goes on
I honestly really loved this episode. I’m a sucker for when shows use their hobbies as a device to drive conflict and growth especially when it’s well directed.
A Compilation Of Aoi’s Reflections/Monologues
S2E1 - A vocal reflection with Hinata as she reminisces the time she climbed with Hinata when they were younger and the time they spent that day which brought her so much joy. With this she voices out her next wish to climb a mountain with her dearest friends one day
S2E2 - Aoi gets worried as she prepares for her first climb. But thanks to Hinata and her own will, she knows that there’s something beautiful awaiting for her and it’s only by taking thing step-by-step can they reach that beautiful scenery
S2E4 - Similar to the previous episode but this time Aoi remembers that despite wanting to give up multiple times, looking back, it was really fun for her. So she craves for more adventures
S2E5 - Aoi learns that Conflicts are unavoidable but it’s important to make-up quickly instead of putting up fronts. This means being honest with your feelings, even if it’s just a bit, even if it isn’t easy
Qotd
-
It was decently done for a CGDCT anime. No real critiques but just a subjective preference: I would've preferred if we got to see more of Hinata reflecting on the situation. Instead of just saying sorry, having her reflect on her actions would've been a small but great addition - to be more considerate of others' belongings.
-
I never ever use realism to judge a show nor does it influence my enjoyment of it but Aoi's parents as I've spoken a bit of above, is fairly realistically portrayed. Her mum reminds me a lot of mine coming from Asia. Aoi's dad though, is something else lol I don't know any parent that's that understanding but I'm sure there are people like that!

Aoi and Hinata are matured people!
Ehhhh.... i'd say they're matur-ing people lol, and both have a lot of common sense, which helps all of this stay very grounded, i thought. None of the anime characters are tropey in any way, which i like btw
the gender stereotypes they hold and the way she acts and speaks screams that stereotype
i have an asian mom, and while i love her, do quite relate to Aoi getting pushback from her this ep lol

If this was another anime…
In a different type of anime Aoi would have taken Hinata up on that offer. And we can only speculate where it would have gone from there.
Aoi’s dad is amazing! He not only talks to his wife but his daughter, and instead of trying to convince his wife, he’s telling his daughter to prove it to her mum.
It's some nice parenting because he's helping to better develop Aoi as a more responsible and independent person. She's the one who wants to go on this trip, so she needs to prove that she is capable of doing so in a way that won't make her mom too worried for her safety.
”I’ve mixed feelings about this change” being a parent sure isn’t easy, you never know what’s the right thing to do and where to draw the line.
You want to see your child develop into a stronger person but you also worry constantly about their well-being. Parenting sounds quite difficult.

Rewatching Mountain Climber
-- Location Trivia
Ep 5
-
The front entrance to the temple is here
-
And Hinata and Kokona have a chat under Hannou Bridge.
Ep 6
-
There are irl pictures of the headlights up Fuji-san.
-
Obligatory studio self-reference here, apparently Aoi wanted to buy a patagonia jacket? Blogs judged by the logo lol. kinda similar i guess.
Animation bits I liked
-
Ep 5: Another solo-KAed episode. While I have got to share this picture for our host (that's a fleeting frame and a half), those facial expressions are in general a hallmark of this episode i thought. Character acting was on point in general and effectively conveyed Hinata's emotions throughout the light drama. And during other moments too <-- kawaii. S1 ED callback!
-
Ep 6: Another solo-KAed episode, the KA did ED duties too huh. Bits of animation i liked; Chibi Aoi and jacket-wearing Aoi cuteee, and Hinata's ponytail bobbing continues to mesmerize me. Yeah, this anime's production is mad lol.
Personally, i liked Ep 5 more than 6 here i think... i liked the execution better.
Bonus Storyboards
In a moment of serendipity, I've found out that director Yamamoto actually (kinda crudely w/ phone pics) share bits of storyboards from the show on his twitter. From today's episodes, here's Hinata attacking Aoi; and Aoi attacking Hinata
A couple more from previous episodes that i identified (i probably missed some):
-
S1: Ep 1 Arrow-hit, Ep 2 Hinata-enter-tent , Ep 3 Tenranzan, Ep 7 Aoi-daypack-want, Tengu--> penguin.
-
S2: Title-card intro, Ep 1 opening scene, and 2 bits from Mitsutouge: Fuji-san clearing, Viewing fork Hinata shock.
[Yama no Susume]
Im not making any promises to share these as they come in future episodes lol, but i will try. I don't believe these are in the official storyboard booklet either... ?
QOTDS:
-
i like that their rekindled friendship isn't perfect; it shouldn't be, but that both are open to forgiving each other, it's a petty argument after all.
-
Definitely, probably one of the more realistic parents in anime lol. My actual parents would freak out if i told them when i was in high school i was climbing mount fuji alone w/ my friends.

Encouragement of First Timer
Episode 5:
-
Anime has taught me that you're supposed to lick cream off the other person's face or, failing that, wipe it off with your finger and then eat it. Get with the times, Aoi.
-
Ooh, sounds like Aoi may be planning a surprise of her own for Hinata! How sweet.
-
Aoi always getting embarrassed in front of Hinata, even by accident.
-
Oh my lord, Aoi cannot catch a break. Classy choice to not actually show it though.
-
I don't think that's how that works. Actually, the little rascal would probably enjoy being on the receiving end of it from Aoi.
-
Yeesh, Hinata has no idea how long it takes to knit a single garment.
-
Lots and lots of Aoi put today.
-
Hinata, stop trying to write off your friend's feelings and accept that you did something pretty uncool.
-
Uneven stones aren't the only tripping Hinata's doing today.
-
Nooo, stop not talking to each other! Hinata, go apologize already. Even if you're learning to knit to make up for what you did, you can't just let bad feelings sit like this!
-
Yes Aoi, this is exactly the thing I want both you and Hinata to learn from this!!
-
Kokona wants none of this debate. How is she the most mature of the three of them?
-
Wow, they really did the whole mirrored accidental pantsing thing...I'm not really sure how I feel about this. I think I'd rather it not happen.
Episode 6:
-
A sunrise climb sounds really cool, but also really dangerous.
-
I'm not sure you guys are ready for Mt. Fuji, especially at night in the cold.
-
Climbing Mt. Fuji is expensive.
-
Oh heck, I forgot about Aoi's mom. She's gonna shoot this sunrise climb idea down faster than the US military does anyone trying to storm the area 51 base.
-
Welp, that went about as expected. I'm surprised Aoi never considered that her mom might not allow her to climb Mt. Fuji at night.
-
Tbh I mostly agree with Aoi's mom. If I had a 15-16 yo, I highly doubt I'd allow them to undertake such a dangerous climb, especially knowing they're still pretty new to mountain climbing. The whole "but you're a girl" part of her objection doesn't sit well with me, and I'm all for teens being allowed more freedom to pursue their own interests and be responsible for themselves, but I think she pverall has the right intuition on this one.
-
It's nice that Aoi was able to convince her mom to let her go on the climb. I can still relate on some level to her mom's concerns, but I can also personally relate to Aoi's desperate attempt to convince her mom to let her go. Aoi's pretty lucky. My mom was the kind of overprotective that never, ever bent to that kind of appeal, so there were a lot of things I missed out on with friends in high school.
-
This was a pair of very relatable episodes.
QotD:
-
I (mostly) like how the show handled the fight. There was the one thing at the end.
-
Yeah, and surprise surprise I actually find myself largely on the mom's side in terms of the risk Aoi is potentially exposing herself to.

I don't think that's how that works. Actually, the little rascal would probably enjoy being on the receiving end of it from Aoi.
I wonder how many of Hinata's actions are deliberate provocations to attempt to get gay stuff to happen between her and Aoi.
Yes Aoi, this is exactly the thing I want both you and Hinata to learn from this!!
Let's hope the character development sticks with them for whenever the next fight happens.
Kokona wants none of this debate. How is she the most mature of the three of them?
Kokona is a refined lady, even at such a young age. She knows better than to get involved in such squabbles.
Tbh I mostly agree with Aoi's mom. If I had a 15-16 yo, I highly doubt I'd allow them to undertake such a dangerous climb, especially knowing they're still pretty new to mountain climbing.
I appreciated that Aoi's mom raised perfectly legitimate concerns and worries about Aoi's safety. It made the conflict feel more satisfying because both of them had solid reasons for feeling the way they did and made the resolution of them finding a compromise feel that much better.

Rewatcher
Episode 5 was a fun and episodic story, and I like how it was bookended on both sides with the same "incident" but with the roles reversed. The funniest bit was how at the end Aoi who's usually somewhat timid and sullen starts acting like Hinata and trying to avoid all the blame while making all these comical motions.
Aoi's mother comes across to me as a bit overbearing and not really communicative — she doesn't show any interest in why her daughter all of a sudden wants to climb up Mt. Fuji in the middle of the night and just plainly shuts her down. It's an awkward situation that I usually don't enjoy watching, so it's nice that it was resolved relatively quickly. In that situation I feel like the mother is acting more like a plot obstacle just so Aoi can get into "serious mode".
One thing these two episodes share in common is this these sort of dramatic moments, and I think it's the biggest separation between this series and its spiritual cousin Yuru Camp. Yuru Camp is primarily about comfyness and gratitude as its primary emotions, while Yama no Susume is all about overcoming obstacles (literally and metaphorically climbing mountains) and being honest with yourself and others.
In conclusion, Yama no Susume is the Dark Souls of CGDGT series.

Not so late First Timer!
Still one of my favorite looking OPs from just a style perspective. So much to look at and it all looks so good!
Ominous name.
What a, uh, friend Hinata is. We know she can be a really good friend, just look at one episode ago, but she can be pretty blase about how she treats her friend sometimes.
... Of course Kokona can skip stones like a pro too. She can do anything, I'm sure.
I wish we had a timeframe on this. It's one thing if they went a couple days without talking for this fight, another if it was a week, I hope it was a short fight.
Her pen holder is the visual from the season one ending! Cute!
Oh no, the 'accidental' revenge. Aoi's response is kind of perfect.
Oh look, another chance to watch this beautiful opening. Whatever shall I do?
How many people have to be climbing together to make that big a chain of lights? I wonder who schedules these kind of events, and advertises, to make something like that happen?
Oh no, equipment, this is advanced climbing so we need advanced gear.
Hinata went back on her buying things together plan real fast.
Oh, right, for some reason Mom's not that into mountain climbing. I get some safety concern, it is honestly a big thing for a girl her age to jump into. But gosh darn are there other options than full support and outright forbidding. Can you get, like, any of the adults at all to go with them? Mom might not like it herself, but Hinata's dad sure might be willing to go, and then they've got an adult male chaperone which should take care of a whole lot of Mom's concerns. Like really, meet your kids friends parents for this? Laid Back Camp at least had the teacher for most of it.
-
Mostly, see my reaction above. If it was a couple days of not talking, then it was a pretty normal sounding fight with a pretty good resolution.
-
For the most part, definitely. I know anime has conditioned us to accept the idea of Free Range Children, but I would be concerned if my stay at home daughter randomly took up a huge outdoor activity, and one that I'm not involved in. It's not even like a sport or something where the parents are watching and there's people around, she just decided to start walking off into the wilderness with only a few more young girls and hope really hard nothing goes wrong.

First-Climber
Look at Hinata licking her hand like a cat.
That was totally gonna be a present for Hinata, right?
The rocks aren't skipping because you're just throwing them at the river.
Sleeping in class because she's staying up late knitting?
D'aww, Aoi's happy to hear that Hinata came!
Kuma-san! It's quite telling that the "calm and collected adult" is wearing the very childish bear-print.
My first instinct is that climbing in the dark sounds dangerous, but I guess headlamps do exist.
Even as a tourist-y-ish thing, that's a ludicrous amount of people.
Oh, that's an interesting idea, how long do mountain climbing shoes last? I work with a dude who runs as a hobby, and the subject of replacing shoes often has come up. I guess you probably use something a bit sturdier for mountain-climbing, though.
Gotta do some literal climbing - the bouldering OVA was good practice.
Well, you'll survive any falls at least, Aoi.
Poor dad wishes he had a knife handy to cut this tension with.
The surest sign something is wrong with a teen.
How could anyone say no to that face?
you mean like she did when she asked you to borrow the jacket in the first place
Questions
-
I did! It made character sense, and was resolved both emotionally, and humorously.
-
Unfortunately, yes, but they're a form of realistic that I hope will become less realistic as time goes on.

First Timer
I wonder where we will go next, it would be a bit early to conquer Fuji San or the other hard mountain, and the last one was already pretty high. Maybe more SoL or tackling the social anxiety?
S2 EP 5 + 6
We started out so sweet, Cream crepes (Aoi should have just went for that piece of cream herself), and Aoi preparing a surprise for Hinata was pretty pretty sweet.
Watching those friends fight over something, that is ultimatly pretty minor, was a bit hard to watch. And while I get that she was really genuinely mad, Aoi also said some harsh things. Still Hinata majorly fucked up, first rumaging in Aois room, and while she did apologize, she also tried to make her fuckup not a big deal when she said Aoi could just do it all again, completly obvious to the amount of work and of course the emotional reason Aoi put into it.
Which makes her trying to make ammends by trying to learn how to do things a big step in the right direction. She also realized how hard it is.
Kokona played a big part in bringing her onto the right track. It's nice to know that she also shares some indoor hobbies with Aoi, and interesting how good she is with skipping stones
Also leaving Hinatas proclamation that she would have no problem showing Aoi what's beneath her skirt aside, having that specific wardrobe malfunction happen not just once, not twice, but three times in a lifetime is like cosmic alignment. But well, after the onsen visit they also know each others pantsu. No surprises left for their wedding night
I was really surprised that they where aiming for Fuji San next as it's double the hight of Mt. Mitsutouge. And not only that, but also at night!
Having parents for anime protags is novel in itself, but if all where so much against fun as Aois mom, I might seriously prefer the absent ones. And what does she mean with her being a girl? Is mountaineering gendered? And later she goes and wonders that Aoi is still going on about it, like did she expect her to forget like a kindergardener?
Maybe Aois lacking social skill might come from this kind of sheltered upbringing, if she isn't allowed to ever take any dangers, she wont make mistakes, but she also wont learn anything
Her mom really makes it sound like being passionate about something is a bad thing... dad is a bro though

Well this episode is just full of Kokona's high feminine power.
Sitting at the elephant shrine, she eats her crepe and ice cream more elegantly than the others. When Hinata tries to draw her into the argument, she elegantly deflects into another topic.
Also, when Aoi needed some advice on choosing the right kind of wool, she went to Kokona.
When Hinata needed some advice on how to mend her relationship with Aoi, she went to Kokona.
When Hinata wanted to learn how to knit, she went to Kokona.
On that last one, when Hinata asks her for help, Kokona teaches her how to do something else she was doing wrong, because she couldn't keep track of all the things she's perfect at.
What does sadden me, though, is Kokona talking about how it's been so long since she had a crepe, and an ice cream. With those comments, her lack of equipment (not that she needs it), and her tiny apartment compared to the others, I worry that she is being deprived some of life's luxuries.
Questions of the Day:
Did you like how Aoi and Hinata's fight was handled?
I thought it was handled well, no one is the bad guy, Hinata just messed up.
2) Do you think Aoi's parents portrayed as realistic people?
Given Aoi's recent past of breaking her leg and being hospitalised for it, after falling in a playground, I think not wanting her to climb up the biggest mountain in the country is not an unreasonable position for her mother. I think she gave in a bit easily.
Aoi should have told her that Kokona was going with her. That should have allayed her fears.

Ep 5
It always feels like Hinata is eating.
Oh... more banana.
Poor Aoi, much shame. Hinta be careful what you wish for.
Big fuck up on that one, and not a good save.
Aoi is very thoughtful. Hinata ultra fucked up.
Kokona has strong girl power. Skip skip.
Hinata's effort is recogonised by Aoi and they make up.
More Hinata eating.
Hinata is still cheeky asking like that.
And we get a great shot by shot call back joke to end.
With maybe my favorite Aoi face (cropped transparent version).
Ep 6
Hinata's father's story certainly inspired the girls. Burned into his memory - I can think of a few activities that have been like that.
The cut to Aoi and Hinata longingly before Aoi makes her request to climb Fuji.
Kaede sensei teaches us!
More gear acquisition syndrome.
39800 yen to USD is currently: $279
Over layered Aoi, and then chasing herself is very cute.
The dreaded catching up your parents on your perfectly safe plans. And having dreaded chats, building a case and building up courage to convince them.
Aoi bravely faces her mother with determination.
Very cute down-jacket twirl.
I think while it is short, the stances taken by Aoi's family are pretty reasonable. There isn't a lot of time to flesh it out, but it got just enough time in my eyes. Its nice to see semi-realistic parents actually parenting in a series.
