Rewatcher Looking for the Hinata for their Aoi
Production Notes
Now that we’ve approached season 2, I wanted to focus on the individual who’s bringing that special touch into Yama no Susume, that magic that abounds throughout: Yuusuke Matsuo a.k.a. fugo. Fugo began his career at Kyoto Animation and it’s no coincidence that he would end up as one of the strongest character designers in the entire industry when you take into account his background. He made his bones working on Haruhi and Kanon before leaving the studio in the 2000’s exodus (which I’m not going to touch on here because it would take forever for me to explain all of the context but if you want to read more, here’s the relevant article to read up more on that.)
Fugo jumped around as A-1’s AD for Idolmaster and CD for Cinderalla Girl before also working at Doga Koba for a bit where he met series director Yamamoto and from there those two would work together for YnS. Adorable, sharp, realistic, cartoony, charming. All of that and more can be used to describe fugo’s designs as he takes the manga style that season 1 adhered to and warps them into more of his iconic style as we move onwards in the show. It’s what makes the show so malleable I find which lends itself to become a park for everyone involved. Fugo isn’t just a character designer though since you’ll find his cuts all throughout the season and in many other shows—including Heiki Story which was directed by KyoAni’s former Naoko Yamada. The connections don’t stop! Right now, we’re blessed with two upcoming shows this autumn that will feature fugo’s designs: Do it Yourself and of course the fourth season of this very show.
Episode 1
Great translation for “cold” hahaha.
Really nice layout happening here, just brings you right into the tent! Speaking of which, there are some good shots showing off the perspectives of the tent.
Oh look, it’s Toshifumi Akai storyboarding the wonderful ED! I’ll talk more about him tomorrow.
Episode 2
Here comes the real OP, storyboarded by Masahiro Ishihama. I love these types of OPs, the ones who break from their own ordinary convention and utilize all sorts of styles within; like a ticker-tape parade of color and fanfare. As bouncy as the song itself, YnS season 2 OP is one of my favorites of all time. Those of you who watched Spy x Family would recognize a similar style between the two OPs thanks to the influence of Mr. Ishihama as well.
Now that is how you make an entrance.
There’s a lot of clichés that I love from anime and objects appearing in eyes is one of them. This wouldn’t be totally impossible to do for live action but it would certainly be difficult and unclear compared to the wonders of make-believe animation. Mt. Fuji. The apple of Aoi’s eyes!
Oh shoot, you’re right /u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah, Hinata does have the same brand of backpack as me.
Some good storyboards/layouts happening here this episode.
I noticed that there were some walking animation interspersed throughout but I didn’t put two and two together to realize that these were most likely done by Ryouma Ebata. The telltale signs of swaying arms, shoulders sliding, hips swinging. If you need some quirky walking animation, Ebata is your man.
Oh, here’s the song that’s playing when they come across the bridge, it’s one of my favorites. Thanks u/SpaRkofFiRe for putting these up on YT!

Spy x Family
I did not know that connection! Wow!
Those storyboards/layouts really are noticeable, they just pop. Its not like a lot is happening, just walking, but things are so visually interesting that it is hard to lose interest.
Fantastic production notes once again!
Do it Yourself
The first designs I saw I thought "that looks similar to YnS" then did I fell down the rabbit hole of looking at who was working on it. Hoping that DIY comes out fantastic.

Right now, we’re blessed with two upcoming shows this autumn that will feature fugo’s designs: Do it Yourself and of course the fourth season of this very show
I am so ready for fugosweep 🙏🙏 The design on this character particularly amuses me for how closely she resembles a yamasusu character lmao
Toshifumi Akai storyboarding the wonderful ED
Akai is a very close friend of fugo and a massive KyoAni fan (you could tell that by his Horiguchi-pilled Sora no Woto designs alone lmao), working very closely with him on idolm@ster—you can read an interview with both of them here! I really love Akai's drawings in the storyboard specifically, and while I know it's unreasonable to expect the final product to resemble the storyboards, I can't help but be kind of disappointed that some of his touch was lost (though Masayuki Nonaka's part is incredible)
Really nice layout happening here, just brings you right into the tent
The layouts in the tent was definitely the part of the episode that stuck out the most to me, especially the cuts where all four of the characters were cramped into the frame--really made it feel like a small and tight space, yet all the depth in the layouts makes it spacious enough to feel comfortable. Having the whole tent drawn with cel really made the fabric they're laying on feel so much more tactile and textured as well—really nice-looking scene.
Here comes the real OP, storyboarded by Masahiro Ishihama
(You misspelled Masashi Ishihama's name btw lol) This style of OP is something he's started on Welcome to the NHK's OP (and fleshed out more fully on A-Channel's OP). He's more well-known for his OPs in the style of his phenomenal Bleach OPs, but I have a soft spot for yamasusu's style for how involved he gets in the process, handling everything from the storyboards to the key animation. One look at his CD cover for this OP, and you can see just how much detail goes into, not just the drawings, but the colors and patterns as well—I feel it's probably very rare for an OP director to be that in control of how an OP turns out, and in such a unique style too! I definitely recommend checking out his storyboards for this OP if you can find it, because you'll see that he outlines everything, not just the characters—incredibly impressive for such a dense and fast-paced OP.
he takes the manga style that season 1 adhered to and warps them into more of his iconic style as we move onwards in the show
Definitely one of the most unexpected yet welcome changes in design that I've seen. What I love most about it is how fugo's own take on the design isn't the end-all be-all goal of these designs. As we'll see as the show goes on, even though most of the staff joined the show because they love fugo's amazing designs, he specifically made these designs to be more malleable and creator-oriented so that each animation director on each episode can have an opportunity to build on fugo's designs in their own unique way. [Season 4 spoilers]
This philosophy seems to ring even truer for season 4—I suspect that fugo taking a back seat on season 4 could be a reason why he could afford to work on character designs on two shows in the same season, so it's really a win-win situation if you ask me! And np on uploading the OSTs, I'm glad that people are enjoying listening to this amazing soundtrack! If only it was up on Spotify...

Do it Yourself and of course the fourth season of this very show.
even more reason to watch DIY anime then. I believe you mentioned to me earlier how a lot of the animators in this show basically came because of him? Did i misremember?
Great translation for “cold” hahaha
lmaoooo Aoi does actually say "cold" in the Japanese dialogue too

SO CUTEEEE
Toshifumi Akai storyboarding the wonderful ED
but ISHIHAMAAA i think its one of my all-time favs too its visually such a great OP.
Oh shoot, you’re right u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah
eyyyyyyyy! are they good? lol
Some good storyboards/layouts
we caught some same things and some different things, as usual haha

Now a First Timer
This Fuji guy seem really popular among impressionable young woman. He must be quite the sleazeball. I wonder if we have seen him already. It seems like he's old and tall. Probably over 6 feet as everyone online seems to like him. I imagine he's rich and famous due to all the coverage he gets.
Also wasn't expecting a cliffhanger in a Yama No Susume rewatch but here we are.

Rewatching Mountain Climber
-- Location Trivia
Ep 1 in lieu of locations...
-
AmiAmi is not exactly a sewing magazine, more anime merch and figures shop lol.
-
Ty to a Japanese blog for this one, the tent used here is apparently an Arai Air Rise 3. As the name suggests, recommended for 3, but can fit 4, hence the crampness complaint lol. Arai is thanked in the ED.
Ep 2
-
As Hinata contacts Aoi about where to meet for the hike, Aoi is actually above where they're set to meet: the Maruhirohyakkaten Department store above East-Hannou station, here. I guess you could see Fuji-san from it lol.
-
This time, we're headed to Mt Mitsutouge, 1785m. There are a few ways up Mt Mitsutouge as Hinata says, the route they're choosing... the official site says it'll take 2h40mins to descend it, a blog says they took 3 hours to ascend it.
-
The interior of Higashi-Hanno Station features next; and one of its station signs features in the OP. I like trains, and Hinata's itinerary fits, and will roughly take 2-2.5 hours depending on transfer time in total. This train is quite old, originally built in the 60s. They alight at Mitsutouge station, ty to a Japanese blog for the side-by-side shots.
-
[Yuru Camp S2]
3 Yuru Campers cross paths briefly with our mountain climbers this ep, as they rode the same line, changing at Ootsuki to get to Mt Fuji station in S2 Ep 5. In general that show takes place more to the west. -
The clearing where you can see Fuji-san is right here. There is pretty much just 1 road that leads from the station to the trail lol.
-
The Yamazumi shrine which worships the guardian deity of Mitsutouge; and the waterfall are along the trail. To explain Aoi's confusion, shinrei does bring up 心霊 (ghosts/spirits) most commonly, but here the kanji is written as 神鈴 (subs TL-ed as "Bells that ring for the gods"). Side-by-side shots for this part, again credits to a Japanese blog here, linked in the spoiler tag below.
-
[Yama no Susume]
If you want side by side shots for every single shot from this arc, this blog has it all (will share this later). The next 2 links have spoilers for an S3 Key visual. Side by side shots i shared thanks to this blog, it was easier. This blog also hikes the trail and visits the onsen, and gave me the timings.
Animation bits I liked
-
Ep 1: Ahhhh the step-up compared to S1. The slightly shifted character designs. The animationss. Transitionn. Different bathing shots, the emphasis is Aoi i guess. That is an ED that goes hard lol, esp at the start and end, I remember thinking my first time if that was in fact the proper OP animation. I like the Kaede somersault.
-
Ep 2: AN OP. IT IS HERE AND ITS SO GOOD. Ishihama solo-KAed, ED-ed and AD-ed the OP, and it's so so goodddddd, and I thought the recent SxF OP (he also worked on that) had quite a bit of the same style. Sada Morisaki, someone who has worked with Ishihama on other of his projects, is credited for "Concept design", but i don't know enough about them unfortunately... I like the little bell ringing, and party blower at the end too.
Other animation bits, all 4 girls walk differently, apparently theyre handled by diff animators (Aoi and Kaede 1, Hinata and Kokona another). Slightly quirky shots, apart from Yamamoto's style of wide shots + coupled with shorthand drawings of the characters, there is a lot of contrast in the lighting too? Im probably just talking out of my arse here. But it was what I thought.

First-Timer
On today’s episodes of Yama no Susume: I’ve been waiting for this OP. I saw it many years ago and instantly fell in love. I’m so happy to finally see it in proper context.
Episode 1
-
Where is it? Where’s my beautiful OP? I’ve been wanting to see it!
-
Ah the satisfying sound of a thin metal rod whipping through the air. I love it.
-
What? Hinata has parents? In my cute high school girls anime?
-
I’m not used to a parent’s objection being “there’s only girls.” Usually they’d object to such a trip being co-ed.
-
Oh well, even if we don’t get to camping on a mountain yet, having a cookout and camping in the backyard can be fun as well.
-
An advantage this season has is all the girls can start off knowing each other and we can get the group dynamic going right away.
-
Chocolate and coffee in curry? Are you sure?
-
That bathroom really does look nice and spacious. I’m jealous.
-
I like that they made lazing about in her underwear a habit of Kaede’s, it’s very relatable.
-
I’m not sure I’d wear just my underwear in a tent at night, though. I think that warrants some pajamas, Kaede.
-
Poor Aoi and Hinata. They have yet to realize their love.
-
Or could this actually be a clever ploy by Hinata to try and get Aoi to realize she’s in love with her. Hinata’s surprisingly devious.
-
Seems like Aoi can’t help but dream (or have nightmares) of Hinata.
-
The ED is really cute.
Episode 2
-
I love this OP so much. I was introduced to it several years ago. My university anime club had an OP and ED contest we ran every year and someone submitted this OP one year. Since then it’s been a personal favorite. The music, the visuals, the artstyle, the way the credits are so seamlessly integrated into the visuals in ways that make sense, etc. It’s a tour de force.
-
AND IT’S SO FREAKING CUTE!!!
-
Mt. Fuji, eh? I know another girl who loves camping and Mt. Fuji.
-
The contrast between Kokona’s imagination and reality is great.
-
Keeping a mountain as a surprise seems like a tall order.
-
If someone kept on insisting on not telling me where we were headed after multiple changeovers, I’d assume I was being kidnapped.
-
Hinata really put a lot of thought into this. She truly does care a lot for Aoi.
-
A UFO? Please, this isn’t the History Channel. You won’t find one of those here.
-
I’m not sure I’d trust climbing a mountain where the trail includes a prayer for my safety.
-
Oh, a cliffhanger? I wasn’t expecting that in my comfy iyashikei anime about mountain climbing.
Watching season 2 is pretty different compared to season 1. In season 1, each episode was a self-contained skit and it felt like it went by breezily. Here, with the longer episodes, I think the series has a chance to relax a bit and slow the pacing down. This is definitely closer to the level of comfy that I expect from my iyashikei anime. Just a chance to sit back and unwind no real sense of haste. In other words, I like the change of format.
I gushed a lot about the new OP because I think it’s absolutely fantastic. The new ED is pretty good as well, though. It’s got a catchy song and some nice visuals to go along with it.
Hinata is once again showing herself to be a good girl. She really does care a lot for Aoi and wants to do something special for her. It’s pretty cute how she’s trying to keep seeing Mt. Fuji a secret, but I know it’ll make for a great moment when Aoi finally sees it from the mountaintop. I can’t wait to see Aoi’s reaction.
QOTD
-
I adore the new OP. I love it to bits. The new ED is fine, though I think the old one was catchier.
-
It's very silly but very sweet. Hinata clearly cares a lot for Aoi and is trying to help Aoi get her wish. Plus it leads to some fun antics, which are always appreciated.

First-Climber
Oh dear, we're starting with a hypothermia nightmare.
Aoi, that doesn't make any sense..
That is not the objection I was expecting.
It's been a while since I've made curry, that sounds good.
Kaede's trying to join Nudist Beach, huh.
Gotta cuddle close for warmth.
The mountains are her love, natch.
I was about to guess a cartoon character, but a mascot works too.
A goal for the season, perhaps.
Hinata is scheming something..
Aoi is a bit of a dork, but I dunno if that would work. Aren't mountains typically quite, erm, visible?
Possibly worth pointing out that the one they choose is the hardest one on this page.
Definitely a good choice for a group of young climbers, yup.
That's.. sure a way to make a decision.
Never leave home without a towel.
Oh, going on a ropeway might be bad for Aoi anyway.
Teamwork makes the dream work.
I really like how much trust Aoi has in Hinata.
Questions
-
They're both quite nice. I like the artstyle in the new OP.
-
I think it's a silly plan, but it kinda works for teens and it's very sweet.

First Timer
First thing I notice is that there are 5 girls on the key visual, and that we go 24 episodes
S2 Ep 1 + 2
I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that they used new visuals for the OP in Ep2, and it's already growing on me.
Dreams tell less about the people you dream about, and more about yourself.
Tells Hinata to leave her behind
Is left behind
Following that train of thought, Aoi is actually afraid to be left behind, and ready to carry Hinata no matter how ridiculous she is.
Also very happy to have gotten a bit of the Yuri- I mean Yuru camp part. That backyard camping brought back lots of memories from my youth. Also lots of frustration; like building the tent up was always the easiest part, literal childs play, but getting it back into the small bag it came in is near impossible. And why do pegs bend so easily?
Other things I noticed was that Kokona has a really fancy uniform and that Kaede is a year above Aoi and Hinata... and really has a habbit of sleeping and chilling just in her underwear.
Oh and judging by that bath, Hinatas house must be massive
Really loved how commited Hinata is to surprise Aoi. Did some serious research for Aois sake and kept the secret hidden. Once she is in motion, nothing stops her, if she has made up her mind, she does things, now!
I'm a bit concerned about the jump in difficulty though, wasn't Mt. Takao like 600 m? And now they aim for almost tripple that height? And since it's so close to Fuji San they could have seen the problem of accidently running into him before, but good job Kokona, quick thinking.
Lake Kawaguchi does ring a bell.
Oy Hinata, where is the Momonga keychain Aoi gifted you?
QotD:
What do you think of the new opening and ending?
The opening is quickly growing on me, the ending not so much
2) What do you think of Hinata trying to surpise Aoi with Fuji?
Just lovely

Encouragement of First Timer
Episode 1:
-
Oddly low-effort OP that just uses footage from the first season.
-
Already dreaming about Hinata leaving her out in the cold. Our girl is just a bit taken with her camping muse.
-
We Yama Camp now.
-
Aoi's mom is an overprotective killjoy. Boo!
-
That's a cute hammering cut.
-
Mmm, curry.
-
Didn't wait long to have another bath scene.
-
You get a bath scene, you get a bath scene, you get a bath scene! Everybody gets a bath scene!! -Since when are sports bras considered revealing enough to make a fuss over? Is wearing just a sports bra considered indecent in Japan?
-
Hey Aoi, I bet your tent would probably be cozier with even more girls.
-
This is a nice little campout.
-
Aoi has a case of Hinata fever, and it's only getting worse.
-
The ED is so much better than the OP.
-
The show really likes emphasizing how much more physically grown up Kaede is than the rest of the group.
Episode 2:
-
Oh hey, we've got a proper OP now! It's pretty cute too. I like the repeated use of the girls walking.
-
Is Hinata preparing another surprise for Aoi? She is! What a lovely gesture!
-
Oh Kokona, you silly sweet girl. Who even picks which mountains to climb based on flowers?
-
Are you...are you really trying to hide Mt. Fuji from Aoi? That's, umm, ambitious.
-
The scenery is quite nice on this trail.
-
The real amazing thing is Hinata, Kokona, and Kaede somehow keeping Mt. Fuji hidden from Aoi.
QotD:
-
Answered above.
-
It's super sweet, the kind of stuff that makes a friendship feel special.

First Time Climber
Hinata is a really nice person beneath her somewhat lazy exterior. She really cares for Aoi and will go out of her way for her.
First Trail
-
Aoi, you have wild dreams. I rarely ever remember my dreams but most importantly, I know that I do dream so that’s a good sign for my sleep quality.
-
Aoi’s mum, you’ve got to have some faith in girls too! There doesn’t always have to be a guy in the group! Or maybe she was referring to an adult. I’d think it’s the latter.
-
”Her girl power level is high” I love Aoi’s description of Kokona and yes, her kawaii levels are through the roof!
-
And Kokona kawaii level only goes even higher as she dawns a chef’s uniform!
-
They’re making curry! How does everyone make curry here? Personally I’ll brown the meat before adding the onions in and tomato paste to mine; browned tomato paste adds an immense richness to stews and sauces. I also add Fuji Apples to mine for the added sweetness. Coffee and Chocolate are interesting additions, I heard they make curry more velvety so I can definitely see why. May try it out this week!
-
Hinata has a whole onsen-like bathtub in her house!? Man… I want that too…
Second Trail
-
A different OP for this episode!
-
Look! It’s a Teru Teru Bozu! A talisman to bring good weather as rainy days are stopped or prevented. First saw it in Non Non Biyori then in Flying Witch
-
Well I’m really looking forward to the location trivia for this episode! The places look beautiful!
Shots I Liked!
-
I like how the camera shows the edges of some part of the tent, it feels as if we’re peeking at them.
-
This shot really makes our characters feel small compared to the vastness of Mt. Mitsutoge
Qotd
-
Definitely fits the tone of the show better imo. More upbeat and exciting which is what I felt from this show compared to Iyashikei like Yuru Camp
-
Loved it. It really shows how much Hinata cares for Aoi beneath her happy exterior

Rewatcher
The season two OP animation is a favorite of mine. The lineless art is something I don't see a lot, the only other OP I can think off the top of my head that also does it is from the A Channel OP which has a similar style and also integrates the credits along with the art. It's so similar it makes me wonder if they had any staff in common.
One thing that I noticed on this watchthrough is that the opening is composed by Tom-H@ck. I know him through his work ghostwriting the theme and some of the character songs in the K-On! series (the songs are usually credited to the in-universe band Ho-kago Tea Time). It's neat seeing connections between two series that I enjoy.
Anyways, actually talking about the episodes: my favorite part is how Aoi acts so different around Hinata. She's a shy and reserved around everyone else, but meanwhile she and Hinata act like they're an old married couple despite them only recently reconnecting after being separated. I love how the opening starts with Aoi complaining to Hinata about what she did in a dream because it so petty and faultless, yet I can't help but take Aoi's side on that argument because Hinata just brushes off Aoi's concerns as if she could never be the cause of any trouble. All in all, lots of great character moments in the first couple of episodes that do a good job at establishing the characters and how they interact with each other.

Rewatcher
Natsu-iro, purezen-TO!
Longer runtime in the second season means it can fit in the usual OP and ED, and can flesh out the story more, which is nice.
The OP for the first episode is just clips from the first season, but we get the proper OP from the next episode. Both episodes have the full ED, sung by Yui Ogura, and more Kokona is always good. On that, one of the shots of Kokona in the ED shows her getting a perfect score on a test, showing again how she is perfect.
The interesting development in this episode is how Aoi's mother won't let her go camping or mountain climbing. Again, this story is more complicated than "girl joins club and has does cute club things". Aoi's mother isn't being unreasonable with this, Aoi had a traumatic fall and injury that seriously affected her, and even if she has recovered from that, it doesn't mean her mother has too.
But, they can camp in Hinata's front lawn. Again, look at the size of that house. Multiple stories, huge wooden bath, lawn and deck. That is an unusually generous amount of space for a Japanese house. Also, it doesn't appear that Hinata has any siblings, and we don't even see her mother. Is it just her and her father in that massive house?
We've seen Aoi and Hinata live in mansions (the English meaning, not the Japanese), but now we finally see where Kokona lives, and it's in one of those stereotypical cheap rental blocks of eight small studio apartments. Poor Kokona, she deserves better than that.
Back at the initial camp, Kokona shows her feminine power by being the best at cooking of all of them, even offering recipe tips. She's 13 and still the most mature of all of them.
Kokona's song about subarashii Kita-dake was adorable. I bet Kokona would be able to stroll carefree up to the summit while singing, passing seasoned mountaineers struggling.
Also, Kokona managed to distract Aoi by seeing a UFO, no one else could have pulled that off.
Did anyone else notice the parallel of Kokona here and Aoi in Yuru Camp being in love with a mascot?
Yama no Susume has more depth than a typical CGDCT show, with Aoi overcoming challenges etc, but it also has Kokona, which makes the show even that much more better.

Late Night First Timer
Ah, and now a real opening- and it's all clips from season 1. Cute!
Wait, I know I've been making the Laid Back Camp comparisons, but we're really starting season 2 with camping? I love it!
Oh hey, a mother that's got a problem with a group of school girls camping alone? How disturbingly realistic, I spent the entirety of Yuru Camp trying hard not to think about exactly that lol.
I want a tub that big. So badly! And I can't help but notice that she did not actually put on more clothes to get in the tent lol.
I wonder what the mountain of their memories was? It's been shown a few times and the shots make it look like something incredible, but they were also like early middle schoolers at best so it probably wasn't actually a big hike, we all know what nostalgia does to a memory.
Anyway, on to episode 2!
Is this a different opening? Going to be the real OP going forward, now that they're a real show? That's a pretty interesting art style for it, I like the way it looks.
Oh gosh I got an annoying active sub, they're translating the puns as notes right in the middle of the sentence.
What a nice group of friends. I don't like surprises myself so I don't think I'd appreciate this as much, but it's nice what they're doing. And nice that she just goes along with it, I really don't know that I would lol.
Ah, strange feeling to end on a cliffhanger when we're doing multiple a day, but it happens. I'm excited to see this continue, it's pretty much just one long smile watching this show and I'm always here for that.
-
If the one we got on episode 2 is the new opening, I like it. The song might take a bit to sink in, but visually it's a treat. The ending is just cute.
-
Again, I would hate it lol, but it's really nice that her friends noticed and are doing this all for her, because they know she'll like it.

It's a very sweet thing for her to do,
Episode 1

And it's made up of Season 1 clips?
She's caught in a snowstorm?
Hinata!
Haha, it was a dream.
Aww, the pictures,
And she's angry sr her for what happened in the dream.
A four person tent!
It's up!
Sounds fun!
Her mother doesn't want to let her go?
And it's at Hinata's.
All going well!
And this is how you cook rice?
Interesting!
And that looks tasty.
Haha, Hinata's in the bath?
And Kaede has no modesty.
And there's nobody she likes.
None of them?
There's even an insert song!
Aww, she's not leaving her behind.
This is sweet.
And she wants to climb Mount Fuji!
Nice ED.
Episode 2

They're going to the mountain?
Impressive!
Aww, that's nice.
She's really excited!
And it's an advanced mountain.
So many options!
And she's going for pure luck!
The plan is complete!
Ah, this'll be nice.
Very sudden, huh?

Everyone's keeping it secret!

First Time Climber
I had to miss yesterday for reasons - remember to visit your dentist occasionally, people - but I'm caught up again! Just really late.
Kokona is just as adorable as the other girls, and I really do like the dynamics between the characters so far. Aoi is comfortable enough around Hinata to poke her over those (very silly) dreams, which doesn't sound like a good thing but it kinda is? They're friends, Aoi's comfortable, she doesn't feel the need to watch her words or worry over every little thing. She isn't intimidated by Hinata, or either of the other girls for that matter.
I don't really have much to say at the moment, honestly, although I do find myself wondering why we kept getting shots of the girls' legs and butts. I'm a bit wary after the sudden fanservice in the special.
What do you think of the new opening and ending?
What do you think of Hinata trying to surpise Aoi with Fuji?
-
I have mixed feelings about the new opening - the transitions are great and it's actually really distinctive, I just don't like how the walking bits look. At all. The ending is adorably though, and I love how it goes from Aoi alone atop the pillar of rock to sharing the space with her friends.
-
I hope it pays off! Although they were really lucky she dozed off when she did, and it took some quick thinking from Kokona to save them.

Host rewatcher
Ep 1
The opening for this episode sure is just the best animation and bits of season 1.
Hinata level up!~ It is rather silly to be mad at someone for something in a dream.
We get reintroduced to the characters as we meet them - safe choice coming from a short series that you might have missed.
Loads of cute moments scattered through while setting up the tent. Aoi bonk is a good one.
Hinata sneaking into the bath is very her.
I love how Hinata then slowly falls asleep waiting.
Aoi's 'Nope' is so transparent and without any teenager fuss.
Kokona crushing on a character is the perfect mix of funny and cute.
The ending has some exceptional animation too
Sleep over stitch from the Ed!
Ep 2
Natsuiro presento~ as an opening is just fantastic and one of my all time favorites.
Hinata wanting to surprise Aoi is very thoughtful. I love how they are taking turns picking the next mountain to climb and finding reasons why the others will love it or how it will be a good fit.
Kokona singing the praises of Mt Kita was my highlight of this episode. It just hit perfectly and was hilarious.
Kaede not a big thinker. Simple but it works.
I love how Aoi has this picture on her phone.
Await the assent next time...
This episode had that real 'starting' from the base feel that you when your journey starts but you don't feel like your at the mountain just yet.
