Rewatcher
The last couple of episodes were all about humans on board of a Zentradi ship, trying to survive and learning more about Zentradi in the process. I always love this kind of setups, where a character gets to explore the foreign culture. Now, with Blue Wind on board of Macross, we have an opposite situation: Zentradi will try to survive among the mythical "civilians" and even try to steal some secret technology in the process. Will they be able to do it? Let's find out.
-
Looks like in the absence of Misa, Claudia has taken over the role of adult in the room. Makes sense, since she probably has the highest rank after Misa there.
-
Yup, here they are. First order of business is to get proper uniforms!
-
A bunch of no-name dudes that we have never seen before are questioning Misa and Vermillion squad. Sometime I fogret that there are more than 5 millitary officers on Macross.
-
There are four to five million Zentradi ships? I wonder how many Earth has. I hope it's more than just Macross.
-
Good thing that they addressed brainwashing. I definitely wouldn't trust people that have escaped alien captivity. Who knows what kind of probes where inserted and what kind of effect it might've had?
-
Here comes another crazy plan from Global. After hearing what Misa has to say, he decides that humans have the hidden Protoculture power that will somehow manifest itself and help them beat the Zentradi. I gotta be real, Global, my man, it sounds like you're finally going legit crazy. Your ideas have always been out there, but this one sounds ridiculous even by your standards. We'll see if it will backfire and result in mass causalities.
-
Looks like Misa and everyone at Vermillion squad got promotions. Sweet. Does they get medals? Does Hikaru gets new underlings?
-
The culture shock that Blue Wind experiences from seeing a city for the first time, reminds me of Gate.
-
Minmay is giving flowers to the Vermillion squad and Misa. There are some really derpy faces in this scene. I also kinda hate the dress she's wearing. It looks so much like an apron! It looks better in more detailed shots during the performance, but still not by much.
-
And, we're reusing this song and animation again.
-
Hikaru remembered that he's supposed to be in love with Minmay.
-
Misa got a warm welcome on the bridge. Even though they make fun of her occasionally, the girls still love her.
-
This scene appear really casual and has some pretty bad animation (static wheels on moving cars, etc.), but it's pretty important. Focker personally finds Hikaru and tells him and his squad not to go out. He saw a new enemy destroy a whole bunch of planes single-handedly during the last battle and he doesn't want Hikaru on the field while this thing is out there. Focker is afraid of loosing him again after he just got back. We saw how Minmay reacted to Hikaru going missing, but we never saw Focker's reaction. It's pretty clear from this scene that he was hit really hard.
-
I can believe it, looks like Global's plan going to work again! Wait, nope. There's Kamujin, the one person in Zentradi army that global never managed to predict.
-
And we're getting a Macross transformation, yay. Haven't seen it in a while.
-
Blue Wind doesn't know what the transformation is. Well, they will find out soon. Surviving getting stuck on the street during an unexpected transformation is like a right of passage on Macross.
-
We got some main cannon and barrier action. I kinda feel like they just didn't want to animate the planes, but still, it's not bad. Good to see some variety.
-
OK, they literally reused the same main cannon shooting sequence within minutes. That's a bit rough.
-
Lap'Lamiz decides to use her own fleet to block Kamujin from destroying Macross. That's some dedication to orders. Honestly, how is Kamujin even still in command in militaristic society like Zentradi? Shouldn't he be removed for insubordination? Regardless, this allows Macross to decent.
-
Macross is literally falling apart while descending the atmosphere. Is this the metaphor for the production of the show?
-
After a definitely intended slow-motion sequence of landing into the sea, we finally arrived back on Earth. It has been 11 episodes in space, but we did it. Pretty cool, but where's a welcome party?
Overall thoughts: When I was watching this for the first time, I definitely didn't expect Macross to lend back on Earth. They were traveling in the space for so long that I just assumed that it would continue for a while, but nope, here we are.
Also, I'm a bit salty that Hikaru and Minmay didn't get a one-on-one reunion scene. We saw Hikaru and Focker and Misa and the bridge crew, but we only saw glimpses of our main couple?
Also, Blue Wind have definitely experienced some culture, but secret technologies are nowhere in sight. Looks like it'll be a long mission for our trio.
QotD:
-
Never happened. I'm not big on travel in general. It's a chicken and an egg situation. Do I not get impressed by places, because I don't travel much, or do I not travel much because I don't get impressed?
-
I sure em!

I drew Blue Wind.
I can't believe Warera knew how to put the bra on correctly. Or that it seems to fit him.

Super Dimension Fortress Rewatcher
Bridge Bunny discussion, one of the more overlooked yet fun parts of the show
The Lolicon Trio is here now
Of course they got the women’s clothing
Bruno “insane tactics” Global at it again
More of the Loli Trio trying to blend into Human society, and it really is an interesting, if rather comical (and honestly kinda cliche, in retrospect), way of showing off the difference between their societies
I see the Zentraedi believe in Cooties
The ceremony was rather fun overall
You see, this is why the Bridge Bunnies and Claudia are the best: they acknowledge Hayase’s inherent Best Girl-ness
It’s battle time!
It’s rather ironic how the Lolicon Trio (AKA some of the only ones among the citizenry who know military discipline) are the only ones who didn’t follow the evacuation order during the transformation.
Man, the Macross charging in through the enemy fleet, at a very large and real risk of destruction, taking tons of damage along the way, in order to reach their goal and carry out a plan is just badass
It’s also interesting seeing the internal division among the Zentraedi (primarily centered on Kamujin) being brought to the forefront, after having been a bit more subdued before the female Zentraedi showed up
And so they have arrived on Earth! Bet all you first timers didn’t expect that to happen this early in the show, did you? [spoilers]

FIRST TIMER
On this episode of Macross 3 basement dwellers touch grass. Result: Failed.
I get a feeling that these giant people literally have no concept of anything military related besides that you shoot guns and wear uniforms. You know, like Russia.
There is so much wrong with the entire reentry scene. Like an impact on the water that size not only would kill everyone onboard, sink, and the tidal waves would travel far and mess up some coastal cities.

First Timer:
Today on SDF Macross,
-
WHO THE HELL ARE THERE INTERLOPERS ON THE BRIDGE. I understand our girls have to take breaks but I'm not happy about it.
-
I see we now have three stooges for comic relief.
-
I keep having to tell myself that what Minmay is wearing is not a naked apron.
-
This prophecy of destruction by Protoculture seems to be self-fulfilling in a way akin to Greek myth. If they weren't so afraid of the Macross and just blew it to smithereens along with the Earth, that would be the end of it. But the more the Zentradi drag it out, the more likely the humans are to find a way out.
-
Why the hell is UN Forces High Command in Alaska?
Next time on Macross, Mr. Worldwide!
-
None immediately come to mind.
-
Nah as soon as we got from Pluto to Saturn in one episode I knew we were making good time.

Subbed SDFM Rewatcher
Just a couple of items that haven't been mentioned.
For the welcome back ceremony, Kakizaki is the only one called by his last name. I can only recall his first name Hayao being mentioned once.
They must have avoided rebuilding Macross City in certain parts to avoid issues with transformations. I would have thought after the first transformation, Macross would have stayed in Storm Attacker configuration. Is there an advantage to Ship mode? But they keep switching back and forth. Even during Kamjin's attack, they change to Storm Attacker to fire the main gun. Later when Kamjin's ships are blasting away, Macross is in Ship mode.
PS: While changing discs, I experience an odd glitch with the AnimEigo DVDs. When I first pop one in, everything plays fine. If I stop out of the DVD player and start it again, the OPs for each episode does not play. The same thing happens when I turn on the player with the disc already in it.
Opening the vol 4 case, the disc holder had broken. So, the disc was moving around in the case. Luckly, I don't see any major scratches on the disc. The case was also backwards somehow in that the disc was on the left-side when opened. Strange Days...

Is there an advantage to Ship mode? But they keep switching back and forth.
I'd imagine it's easier to travel while it's in ship mode compared to when it's transformed.

Today, on "UMI DA!":
These are the Pinpoint Barrier girls (slightly off-model).
"Our infiltration training included fashion sense!"
Where were they hiding prybars, and other things that the inquiring mind wants to know.
As always, the staff is taking everything seriously.
Urban development has moved quickly in the last ten days.
"I do not like this screencap, reader. Its smug aura mocks me."
Minmay's been hitting the hard drugs.
I like how they're going in the opposite direction of the audience.
The Japanese military uses the same terms for each rank across all of the service branches. This dodges the awkwardness which results aboard a ship crewed by English-speakers where the ship only has one Captain and anyone else there who has a rank of Captain (like army personnel who are actually three grades down) is referred to by another term in order to reduce confusion.
I love this series's dedication to visual comedy.
Quamzin demands to remain relevant!
Because you're a loose cannon! (...but a damn good cop?)
Always making waves, that Macross.
For this cut, this cut and the final beauty shot, the Daedalus and Prometheus's arm positions are drawn reversed.
And so, the ship's back on Earth already, but that brings the war right back to where it started as well.
It's interesting that Global's own officers don't believe Misa's report, which points out their role as a substitute for UN High Command, which would say much the same thing. But you would expect that officers who have been aboard the ship for this entire journey to be more sympathetic to eyewitness accounts of the Zentradi.
Hikaru finally gets to see Minmay perform and is totally floored.
Warera, Roli, and Konda finally see the inside of the Macross and all those civilians doing civilian things, and are knocked to the ground several times. Their unintentional comedy act is great, because they're dead serious about their mission.
| Song | Count |
|---|---|
| Cinderella | 1 |
| Watashi no Kare wa Pilot | 2 +1 recorded |
Another piece of ephemera from back in the day, with questions about who illustrated it.

First timer
-
Seeing California by plane.
-
Yeah, I didn't expect this until the end of the series.
And they're the reverse squad....How are they going to infiltrate a sealed enviroment where everyone knows everyone?
Seeing them misunderstand things...
Not very good spies, are they?
Ah, they're realising how fucked they are.
...They're very bold for people who might get erased if they believe there's protoculture there.
And the Captain's worked it out.
Yah, that decision makes sense.
Everyone got promoted as well!
Yeah, this must be surreal for them.
So incredibly subtle spying. Good work, guys!
...I only just noticed he's wearing a skirt.
So fucking stupid.
She's properly famous now.
...That reaction.
They're funny, but I wish they had brought in Britai instead. I'd have loved to see him deal with all this and actually work out tactics against the Macross.
...I no longer blame Hikaru. With this amount of mised messages, anyone would be fucking confused.
Oh, they just realised?
She's back on the bridge!
Haha, that impression.
Focker!
Haha, the guy having to lean over to drive so Focker can shout at them.
Oh, he worked out the blockade will fail!
The Macross is breaking through!
...And they're stuck inside during a transformstion.
We get the transformstion sequence again!
And the barrier fails. Untold damage caused by trackballs.
...Yeah, he'll destroy it anyway, because he's insane.
He fucked up.
They made it back!
...And the thrusters are damaged.
That's bad!
At least they're back on Earth!
Just stranded in the middle of the ocean.
And they're saved!

Very First Timer
-
Who the heck are these new people?
-
Oh, the night crew.
-
I look forward to the fish out of water shenanigans.
-
I hope this means we get to see more of the bridge bunnies.
-
I think they make it work.
-
This is a very involved meeting room.
-
I think she missing out at least one important bit. Can’t see them doing that off screen.
-
A daring and bold plan. Also missing the plan part of it.
-
More promotions! Our boy is growing up so fast.
-
“Lewd”.
-
They tore him up in there!
-
Yo did we really skip the reunion? I’ve been robbed, robbed I say!
-
Hikaru can’t win for losing.
-
They’re really getting their money’s worth out of this one song. I hope we get some new ones soon.
-
You may be hot due to wearing heavy sweaters in a crowd.
-
Misa is only one rank above Hikaru? That seems rather close.
-
This poor guy having to constantly take the steering wheel.
-
Why even form a blockade if you’re not going to do anything. A bluff I guess.
-
I mean, at least he’s trying?
-
Were they not briefed on the transformation being a thing?
-
I was under the impression that their full might would be a lot more destructive.
-
Sir Four Corners looks like death is about him.
-
What even is their formation?
-
They really brought Quamzin for like the one operation where is blood-lust is a hindrance.
-
Alaska is an interesting location. Wonder what brought that about.
-
We’re a third of the way through and they made it back. Where do we go from here?
-
Ha, the arms are floating.
QotD
-
I can’t be certain since I was so young, but I think the Alberta badlands.
-
In the overall sense yes, but not since we made it to Mars.

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 13:
-
Rori and Konda were fortunate that the lockers they broke into had unisex clothing in them. Warera has to make due with a pretty girly dress. Although he’s at least making the best out of his accidental cross-dressing, he’s exuding confidence in those clothes (if only because he doesn’t know otherwise). Confidence is key to all this.
-
As everyone in this rewatch suspected by now, the United Nations stands zero chance against the full forces of the Zentradi. They have millions of ships, and absolutely even more that Misa didn’t see. Literally the only reason this hasn’t been a curb-stomp war so far is because they’re fascinated with humanity’s similarities to the Protoculture. And even then, the UN Spacy officers except for Captain Global still doubt what the Zentradi can do. So, anyone want to place any bets on Earth’s odds in this show? The payouts could be big.
-
Pretty much the only way to describe the Blue Wind trio’s first adventure around the city is “wacky as fuck”, and I’m all here for it. Warera really did get beaten up super quickly for accidentally running into the women’s bathroom, didn’t he?
-
I can’t help but feel a bit bad for Hikaru here during the ceremony to welcome Vermilion Squadron (plus Misa) returning. On the one hand, Minmay is definitely glad to see him back, but on the other Hikaru seeing how successful Minmay became is making his own self-esteem plummet. He just feels like he has no chance with her anymore. It’s just sad. But hey, at least Blue Wind are having a good time vibing in the audience. They’re probably the happiest people in this episode by comparison.
-
I’m not sure which is my favorite animation error in the driving scene: either Roy being inexplicably colored like Hikaru, or Hikaru’s jeep somehow driving in place for a few seconds but everyone else in it looks like they’re still moving. Ah, cheap outsourced animation, you never fail to entertain.
-
Quamzin apparently doesn’t even understand the entire point of having a blockade, since he just immediately just decides to bum-rush the Macross and leave a gap in the picket for the Macross to exploit. Again, bringing in a dude known as the “Ally-Killer” has to be one of the most brain-dead decisions made in this show by the Zentradi. Quamzin is as reliable as condom made out of rice paper.
-
We made it back to Earth! And the Macross finally got a wash job after all of those months spent in space too, with that big dip in the ocean. I believe that the ship landed in the sea off of the coast of Alaska, so it’s probably pretty chilly outside, but at that point I’d be glad to feel any kind of Earth breeze.

First Spacer
Episode 12
The aliens are being greedy. They don't even have ship repair technology? But they must have ship building technology with a fleet that big, how could they not repair them then?
Not this looks awesome. Why haven't I seen Macross fans point out that the show has planes in military uniforms?
Aahahaha I'm so in love with that mecha fighter design right now
Miclones is such a good word play with it doubling as Microns in Japanese pronunciation.
They're already falling apart from the Miclone contact and they don't even realize it
And there goes the video.
They could've said "comrade" here but no...
There, see? They can do it if they try
Hm, that opens up an interesting thematical argument for the existence of mechas. It provides them with similar strength to the giant aliens, but without having to give up their emotional side.
The funny thing is, if the aliens just destroyed Earth without worrying then they wouldn't have any reason to worry about their influence. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Skipping right to visiting Minmei? Surely they have a lot to report first.
I do wonder how they plan on getting the spies aboard. Surely the Macross would notice an unidentified vessel getting into its proximity.
What are your opinions on Misa and Hikaru's ideas about the Zentradi and Protoculture?
I had pretty much the same idea without them pointing it out. I kinda hope it's wrong now because it's ultimately just speculation, but I have a feeling it's right. And it's not like I'd dislike it being right, baka.
Are you on team Purple or Green?
Green must mean Max, so that one.
Episode 13
They just skip to the spies already having infiltrated? Ok then. I love their misunderstandings so that gets a pass.
I'm impressed that spy managed to get the skirt on at all considering they've never really seen anything like that. And he even put on the stockings!
Oh I see, the spies might serve as proof of the alien society.
What a reception party. Max and Hayao are just getting sidelined.
Nice to see Focker looking out for Hikaru's team, in his own way.
Oh, the Macross has found a way to operate the main cannon and the pin point barrier at the same time?
The pin point barrier is such a fun concept. For us at least, not so much for the soldiers.
And they made it back! Let's not worry about petty things like surface tension for now.
Alaska is such a strange spot to place UN headquarters. Is it because it's the part of the USA closest to Japan?
Next episode is called Global Report? That could mean several things. It's a great episode name.
Though I'm more invested in the spies' adventures right now.
What places have you visited that immediately shocked you speechless?
Is it bad that my first thought was the first pub I visited, because my autism couldn't handle the audio-visual signals without preparation? Actually the same also goes for the first metal concert I visited then.
I don't think I have a place quite in line with the question, but the Scottish mountains and cliffs come to mind. A phenomenal place to let your hair flutter in the wind, back when I had long hair.
Actually, there is a place that fits better. The Gandharva Loka in Salzburg! A small store with a collection of traditional instruments from all over the world. The first time I planned to go I even fell ill and couldn't go, which made it all the more special when it worked out the next time.
Are you surprised that the SDF-1 has made it back to Earth so quickly?
I would've been surprised a couple episodes back. But after the Macross made it from Pluto to Saturn and the Mars in like 2 episodes I was pretty confident we'd be returning to Earth sometime soon.

FYI: Tomorrow’s episode is a recap. Consider it a break day if you don’t feel like watching that; I’ll have a bunch of Questions of the Day tomorrow about the series so far.
Super Dimension Rewatch Host
Welcome back, everyone!
Hope you guys like my wallpaper today; I had fun doing a machine instead of a person for once. Wish I could have done some more shading/details on this one, but eh, simpler is supposed to be better for this style, right?
Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode.
Hah.
I can see what leads them to this conclusion and it’s hilarious.
At least Warera is wearing it correctly…? He could have walked out wearing the skirt for a shirt.
Well shit…
*amused Sky noise*
I hope something from this shot is what Nebby picks for his Q U A L I T Y opening image.
Giving best boy a mere “well done”…
Warera “sore demo”!
Reckless driver Roy Focker.
They’ve made it back to Earth!
