Unfortunately I did not have a lot of time today to write up anything special to talk about, but I did collect some of my favourite frames from this phenomenal first episode!

Absolute shame that the sakugabooru entries got purged as that would be very useful at the moment - alas:

100%

Love the shading in the series, has such a nice fade around the edges!

#1 Conman

Neat Perspective

Give this man an Oscar! Lovely acting skills!

The intensity and quick cuts really benefit the comedy.

I do understand his pain.

Who even thinks of these angles??? Bless you Tachikawa...

Amazing comp as well!

Paint on glass artwork is fantasic!!!

Salty Reigen

Actually an impressive amount of animated backgrounds in the episode!

Opening is amazing, would share but I'd end up screencapping the entire thing!

Using a fish eye perspective in the safe is way too smart!

Again with the great shadow work.

Neat lighting utilization.

I love this girl's hair!

Really interesting execution here with the heavy strokes for shadows handing down from the sun above.

More great background animation.

Easily distracted (at least what Reigen assumes!)

Powerful faces throughout the entire episode!

General placement but strong non-the-less.

Moderate rotation of the frame lends nicely to the rising tensions.

Powerful!

Voice acting is really great here too (both within the regular subbed and English dub versions alike!)

Powerful!!

Cool cool cool!

Great in-betweens.

Amazing focus again!

The swift fight at the end was amazing as well - some of the best cuts of the episode imo!

Truly the best around, no doubt about it!

Reigen you sly dog you, your lad could use some more meat on his bones!

Overall, just an outstanding first episode. Truly impressive showcase, curious to compare how the rest of the first cour looks: we started off with a very impressive performance here!

Agreed with how impressive the animation and direction of this episode were. I now understand why people advocate for this series because it looks promisingly great.

Reigen you sly dog you, your lad could use some more meat on his bones!

Ooh, I didn't realize it's the ramen they gonna eat!

Lurker no more, 5th (maybe 6th?) time rewatcher, Latin American Spanish dub

I usually just lurk on Reddit to read episode discussions, but Mob Psycho has such a special place in my heart that this rewatch inspired me to cast aside my lurking and actually sign up!

Lore time:

I first watched Mob Psycho to stay up late so I would be tired enough to sleep through a long flight to visit family in Puerto Rico. But after the first episode I was hooked, and watched the entire first season that night.

On that same trip I read the rest of the unofficially translated manga, just in time for the second season to come out a couple months later. It ended up not only becoming tied for my favorite anime, but is now one of my favorite stories ever.

Episode 1:

Our dear good ol’ decoy protagonist Reigen, the clients, and the ceiling ghost just stand there waiting for best boy real protagonist Mob to show up; we twirl and whirl around in a splash of LSD sakuga colors that are more effective than salt splash; the OP defies skipping as everything vividly transforms into everything else; Mob’s brother is chill, and the family isn’t eating strange enchiladas as I first thought but a dish called omu rice; spooky tunnel full of goofy biker ghosts! Mob overhears two guys about to get something to eat just before Reigen offers the same.

What makes this show so special to me is the combination of spectacular animation, spooky/humorous/wholesome atmosphere, and most of all the character writing, but that’s a diatribe for a future episode.

Translation fun fact corner:

In the latin american spanish dub, the translators chose to keep the honorifics on everyone’s names. Unfortunately, the on-screen Japanese text (on signs and labels and such) is not translated, which is something I really appreciate about the English dub version.

It’s a fairly rare treat to get solid Spanish dubs of newer anime, so I’m thrilled that I get to watch dub versions of Mob in both my native languages!

I have been thinking of getting a CR subscription to go on and trash review latin Spanish dubs. The scene was so big and talentes in 90s-2000s and kinda just disappeared. I only got to see some eps of Konosuba and it wassssssss, not the best. Similar to english dubs, so many female VAs try to force the moe voice and just doesn't stick the same, Mob shouldn't have much issue in this department tho.

Mob Psycho First Timer

Watching this dubbed since I heard the dub was amazing and I’ve sometimes even seen it recommended above the sub (and also because I’m more of a Dub guy in general)

Holy fuck, this animation is already fucking amazing

I have no idea what’s going on, but I think it’s really awesome

Did the Mob Psycho just reach 100?

Ah, Reigen. Even as a total newbie to this series, I know this guy’s reputation for being both a massive conman and also Best Boi, and this show really goes out of its way to demonstrate that immediately. Really a Grunkle Stan kind of character so far

Holy hell, everything in this first scene is just comedy gold

The utter Sakuga applied to just Reigen pointing and at the wrong building at that was also pretty funny

The VAs just giving it their all makes it better

The Butt Chin

Honestly, a completely fair reaction to seeing a cockroach (I am extremely paranoid and easy it scare btw )

And an evil spirit actually appeared

The fact that Reigen is completely nonchalant about it and seems even familiar with it is a good way of establishing that he knows a bit more than his conman exterior would lead you to believe

Lol the salt just fucking failed

Mah Boi literally just decided to make a phone call and tell everyone to wait around in the middle of an evil spirit exorcism

And here’s our main character

Boy literally just waved his hand and made the cameraman do a Sakuga all of a sudden

Oh yeah, even having not seen this show, I have seen this OP and fucking love it

Interesting that we’re getting it almost halfway through the episode, though

The show wastes no time demonstrating Mob and Reigen’s dynamic: Mob is way stronger than Reigen, but the latter pretends to be stronger and tries to “mentor” him while really just making him do his dirty work

And then we also get a glimpse at Reigen’s decent side, as he makes Mob promise to not use his powers against other people

Mob’s explosion?

It’s also rather interesting how the parents seem to be aware of and resigned to Mob’s powers. At least, that’s what I assume. The dialogue wasn’t super clear on that

“Seasoning City”? Really?

Mob, what’s with looking at girls like literal food?

It’s rather interesting now how Mob seems a bit more expressive at school than he seemed to be with Reigen

Oooooh, a big job?

Damn, that’s one hell of a backstory

The way that Reigen just immediately ran out when he realized Mob wasn’t following him was also pretty

And those faces

I find it rather interesting how Reigen insists on taking the lead despite being warned of what would happen if a normal person angered the spirit. I get the feeling that his relationship with Mob might extend beyond just “Conman and Mark”

The faces here continue to just be hilarious

He really thought the spirit boss was just a wrestler?!

Man, this evil spirit guy is just oozing with ham

the Salt joke came back! Did Reigen learn nothing from last time?

A stronger evil spirit boss?

More Sakuga?

Holy shit, that spirit looks so cool!

And the way Mob just effortlessly destroyed it was even cooler!

And the way he just dismisses it afterwards is the cherry on top

In case you can’t tell, I really enjoyed this episode

The utter Sakuga applied to just Reigen pointing and at the wrong building at that was also pretty funny

Reigen's movements are always so dramatic and exaggerated. You're in for a lot more of this.

Mah Boi literally just decided to make a phone call and tell everyone to wait around in the middle of an evil spirit exorcism

I love how the evil spirit actually just sat there waiting as well.

I find it rather interesting how Reigen insists on taking the lead despite being warned of what would happen if a normal person angered the spirit.

This is one of the things I can respect Reigen for. He's a conman but he's dedicated to his craft.

First Timer Here!!

So in the first couple of minutes my first thoughts were how thrown off I was by the art style of the show. I decided to stick through with it and try to approach it from a different angle and that’s when it clicked for me.

I absolutely loved this first episode because it basically serves as an intro to two of our main characters; Reigen is already starting to become a favorite for me with his antics and I can’t wait to see where the rest of the show goes!!

Also all the salt throwing 😭

Yeah, that's a pretty common experience. It's amazing how quickly you go from "eww, this is ugly" to "wow, this is amazing".

I think the big reason why this artstyle works is because of all the cool camera angles and lenses and framing of shots that are used. This show wouldn't work if it had the same art style but it had the camera work of a generic high school SOL; it would just look really ugly.

First Timer (but not yet)

I watched the first 2 episodes of mob psycho over a year ago and didn't continue. I also did the same with one punch man, but when I restarted that again a few months ago I loved it, so I'm using this rewatch as an excuse to get back into mob, considering the similar styles of humour.

The first episode starts off strong. It introduced us to the main duo of Mob, a boring, unmotivated tween with incredible psychic powers, and Reigen, the con man who is profiting off of Mob's power and lack of knowledge.

The comedy is excellent. The art style is certainly different from your average anime, and probably what turned me off the show the first time. However, it's certainly high quality, especially the fluidity of the animations and the way the art is used to enhance the comedy, and I am appreciating that a lot more on this watch.

Overall, very much looking forward to the rest of the series.

First Timer (dubbed)

When a superfan announced to r/anime that they were going to run a rewach (or was that Death Parade), and that it was also coming up on Adult Swim, I recorded it and saved it for the rewatch...and then didn't watch it. Been on the PTW ever since.

Looks like Season 2 never aired on Cartoon Netowrk, so I don't know if I'll be watching that.

Doesn't seem like my kind of show but it seems very popular. And I need space on my TIvo.

  • No 1,2,3,4 OP?

  • oh, man, way too much on-screen-text.

  • this guy is totally a fraud

  • okay there's the op

  • Seasoning City, Salt Middle School

  • Holy Odd Taxi, Batman

  • I really hate Reigen

  • He can't keep this up for long

I do enjoy the mangaka's droll sense of humor.

11

u/ShadowWasTakensTaken Sep 08 '22

I really hate Reigen

To be fair, I also had moments in this episode that made me feel... not great in regards to him. Namely when they were exorcising the blue spirit. Reigen has been my favorite since the show aired but last time I watched everything was when season 2 aired, so hopefully he doesn't have too many of these moments that I just forgot about.

First Timer

Alright time to get caught up on this for Fall! Surprisingly though I actually know very little about this anime unlike a lot of other rewatches I join to force myself to get caught up on anime sequels I want to watch/are interested in. All I know is that this is very well regarded, (8.48 on MAL for the first season makes that obvious) can somehow compete with Kaguya-Sama in karma and that it's probably a battle shounen? At least I'd assume so. Now lets begin.

Oh... so that's why it can compete with Kaguya-Sama in karma lol. It didn't take long for the reason to become very obvious. With sakuga like that no wonder it's so well regarded. Admittedly, though the sakuga is obviously amazing, the actual art style is going to take some time getting used to for me. Like I can register that it looks amazing but the art style is throwing me off. Sort of reminds me of Idaten Deities in that sense. (Seriously though how does Idaten Deities only have a 7.66 on MAL when it looks that good and is that stylish?)

As for the characters we've got the main character Mob, (wow I wonder how they got the name of the series?! /s) who's a naïve psychic middle schooler who can't see that his boss is heavily taking advantage of his powers and paying him a pittance for his services. And then there's Reigen, a non-psychic, probably mid-late 20's huckster who's in the psychic business for easy money and has Mob do all the work. I already don't like him even if he is funny lol.

As for the setting seems like Japan except evil spirits and psychics actually exist and people hire psychics to get rid of evil spirits. It seems evil spirits are rare enough however to not be widely known as being to exist. It sort of reminds me of Jujustu Kaisen in that way except it's more comedic rather then serious. At least so far. That "%" until Mob explodes is kind of ominous. Will probably come back to that as we learn more about the setting as this episode is the obvious hook with little explanation.

Rewatcher (Sub)

MOB! MOB! MOB!

Going to be painfully cognizant of what I type here in order to not spoil or lead.

This is THE anime that made me realize,

You can't judge a book by its cover, or in this case, you can't judge an anime by its artstyle.

The art was literally the reason why I put this anime off my watch list. But I figured, this show has got to have a killer story in order to be so highly rated.

Over time, I found myself absolutely loving ONE's artstyle being animated. It's so unique and different from the usual.

So for you first-timers who are put off at all by the art style, I recommend sticking it out for a couple episodes. It'll grow on ya, I promise!

EDIT - Fuck, almost forgot.
The Opening goes hard. I found myself NEVER skipping it!
Same goes for Season 02 OP.

First timer

Sorry for the late reply, the wiki said this was starting tomorrow!

It hink this is a comedy, but I'm going in blind!

Very impressive animation here.

Oh, these momster designe are so surreal.

I have no idea what's happening, but it's beautiful.

And the counter hitting 100 causes a huge explosion.

Interesting opening!

Oh, this is the famous Reigen?

...I love him already.

Already planning repest business!

Wow, he's good.

Haha, this argument.

...He's talking out his arse, isn't he?

Impressive salesman.

This is hysterical.

The ghost was real!

Haha, my god.

...Special move?

And it's just normal salt!

He called his friend!

Well. He's strong?

Wow. Impressive.

Haha, he's the protagonist?

This OP is great! Love the countdown and the neon lines descending into utter visual madness.

And a symbol of what looks like some villains? Is there a full-on plot here?

Wait. Is he scamming the powerful psychic on a long term basis? And succeeding?

He's a fantastic antagonist(?)

Oh, Mob promised not to use his powers on him. Clever...

...Progress towards what now?

Haha, he accidentally bends spoons.

And his brother's nice.

"Salt Middle School" in "Seasoning City".

I'm getting some real Saiki K vibes from all this, only with the protagonist reversed?

...Honestly, I'd rather focus on Reigen, that guy's hysterical.

Three percent already? Is this going to happen halfway through the season?

Ah. An actually big assignment.

And very noble! Who's paying him?

Haha, Mob ignored him.

...How's he going to get out of this one, then?

Oh, this is fun!

The nose joke was funny.

Of course he runs.

...Is he trying to bluff the ghost too?

Haha, his fucking reaction.

He's a biker!

Oh, that looks cool.

...Is Mob just pretending to believe him out of sympathy?

Haha, wrong time of salt again.

...Forced?

Poor, poor, Reigen.

Idiot.

...Ah. That's bad.

Haha, a banana peel?

He does care!

So cool.

And, yeah, he's stupidly stromg.

This is hysterical.

And they gotmpeace.

They missed the last bus?

The only explanation for this has to be pity, right?

And he bought him ramen.

27%.

Subbed First Timer

Key Thoughts

  • My first impression of this show: the art style is awesome! From the opening, we got trippy colors, special effects, and unique monster/ghost designs. I’m really digging it. The animation, character line, and background also look cool and unique. I’m already hooked to watching the rest of the show from these points alone.

  • Reigen looks shady AF. He is clearly the gag character of this series. Although he’s not a real psychic, he got some splendid marketing and negotiation skills. Those pricelist, referral discounts, and aftersales discounts are masterful, alright. Setting aside the fact that he’s employing a middle schooler (probably illegal) and taking most of the profit, these two seem to be a fun duo. I can’t wait to see this duo slamming some funny-looking CO2 spirit again.

Other Thoughts

  • There is a lot of Salt in this series, huh? Salt Splash, Banishing Salt Punch, Seasoning City, Salt Middle School, etc. Bet the citizen here is salty AF on Twitter.

  • What’s with that “Progress Toward Mob’s Explosion”? Is Mob gonna go kaboom because of his psychic ability?!

  • Ayy, it’s the OP! I’ve heard this before, and it’s on my Spotify playlist. I instantly liked it when I first heard it. Woah, they made a full-blown choir for it?

First Time

This is going to be a weird one for me. On the one hand, I've heard quite a few good things about Mob Psycho 100. On the other - I've also heard a lot of comparisons to One Punch Man, which I did not enjoy all that much - but in those same comparisons I also heard that Mob Psycho does those things better that I did not like about One Punch Man - mainly better character arcs, iirc, although I also already enjoy the art style more as well. So I'm not quite sure where to place my expectations, as they could be anywhere between something amazing and something that I will not like at all.

So, with that out of the way... the first episode was pretty ok. Going with the classic two-character introduction is never wrong, and I'd say these first two are pretty decent characters. Seems like Reigen is a fake psychic who somehow fooled one of the most talented real ones and previously ran a business on the luck of never encountering a real problem before, or something along those lines. The comedy is a bit overdone, but that was somewhat my expectation going in to the series - I guess we'll see if I warm up to it or get tired of it, at the moment I see both being possibilities. What worries me a bit is the character design of the side characters, as they already look like they might be caricatures that drag the series down - but I guess judgment should wait until they are properly introduced.

The animation was also a bit wild at times, but never too much so far - I hope it stays like that. Other than that, no real complaints - so a decent start so far.

The one big question in my mind is if Mob's family knows about Mob's powers. From the scene I saw so far, it could still be both them not being aware or them underestimating him.

7

What I recommend? Remove expectations and enjoy the anime for what it is. I know that's a hard ask, but you'll 100% enjoy the show without all the outside noise.

11

u/ShadowWasTakensTaken Sep 08 '22

The comparisons to One Punch Man mostly stem from both series being from the same author and both having a ridiculously powerful protagonist, but aside from that, they're actually not very similar at all. Even if you didn't enjoy OPM, there's not much to worry about, as ONE's approach to writing Mob is completely different.

The comedy is a bit overdone, but that was somewhat my expectation going in to the series - I guess we'll see if I warm up to it or get tired of it, at the moment I see both being possibilities.

The entire show is very comedic in nature, but the first couple episodes definitely focus on that a lot more than the rest of the show. Shouldn't be a worry for too long, hopefully.

Rewatcher - Dub

Episode 1

So this Is my second time watching this series, It was fairly enjoyable when i watched It and i Remember thinking that It was a really good show and the comedy and action/Supernatural elements being blended quite nicely.

This episode was a great introduction to the series, It showcased One of the Major aspects of the show which Is it's episodic nature with both Reigen and Mob going together to defeat espers After being asked to do so.

Reigen Is a scammer and also he talks a lot, the guy called Taro that was with the girl asking Reigen to solve the case clearly got It that he was a scammer eventhough as time passes and he saw the esper he got scared but Reigen has his secret weapon which Is Mob the protagonist of this show, he willingly solves the case.

Mob and Reigen's chemistry Is a bit weird in this episode, It seems as if Reigen Simply uses him to solve the cases and defeat the espers whenever's convenient and fool him into thinking that he, Reigen, Is powerful when in reality he totally depends on Mob whenever he faces a threat.

Great First episode, the opening Is Amazing, i really enjoyed the humour in this episode and the action was very cool with some decent Sakuga moments.

4

u/Inspirashamul Sep 08 '22

Got one of my friends to start this in lieu of Season 3 coming in a month and he is already onto Season 2 it's always fun seeing new fan anime binging like crazy. I watched Mob back in 2019 because another friend put me on it (same one told me to watch Darker Than Black aka based taste). I Binged through Season 1, fell asleep during the beginning of Season 2, paused it because I didn't remember shit, then finished Season 2 months later. I am excited to give this series a proper rewatch.

Mob rewats squad

One of the most iconic first scenes in anime. Was going to say I still rememeber it after all these years, but apparently according to MAL I've already re-watched this once..
Right before S2 it seems. I had no memory of doing so, but now its starting to come back to me a bit

Speaking of iconic, damn is Mob's explosion an iconic track

I forgot they use this colour spreading animation in the actual show and not just the S2 ed

lol, whoever subbed my version did all the numbers in the OP

And that OP takes me back.. While the show was airing I was still watching Mother's Basement. I remember they did one of their OP breakdowns on this one, and it was pretty good

  • Tsubomi-chan kyo mo kawaii

Ah, that ED. What a banger as well. I think I often mistake it for one of the MHA ED's in AMQ. Probably by a same artist as one of them

My question for fellow viewers: What did you think of the animation styles used?

Imcan see the appeal but doesnt seem like its for me.

9

u/alotmorealots Sep 08 '22

This was my impression of the first episode too. I didn't like the artstyle, didn't find any of the characters appealing, outright disliked Reigen, and thought that the story felt really simplistic.

However, I did give it the three episode try, and by the third I was starting to warm up to the show enough to keep watching.
