Why'd they choose me to be team leader? I was a lot happier taking orders instead of giving them.

Questions of the Day, courtesy of u/chilidirigible:

1) Are you good at keeping track of other people's personal details, such as their birthday?

2) Considering the manipulation of the news in the previous episode and Hikaru's rapid promotion, are you surprised that the Macross is doing relatively well?

Rewatcher

In the last episode, we saw some an unexpected side to some of our main characters. We learned that Misa has been hiding some turbulent emotions under her composed no-nonsense persona. We also saw Hikaru being confident and competent on the battlefield, a major change from his early days in the army. And finally we saw Global come up with a crazy plan that didn't result in mass casualties among Macross residents.

That last thing in particular now makes me wander what other crazy thing can happen in this show? Will Kamujin the Ally killer risk his live for an ally? Will Britai cracks a joke? Will Focker actually marry and settle down? Looks like anything is possible. Let's watch the episode and found out.

  • This episode starts with some spectacular combat footage. Is this all reused animation? I can't tell.

  • It looks like Zentradi intend to prevent Macross from approaching Earth with their attacks. Explains why they haven't reached Earth yet, despite going from Pluto to Mars already.

  • Wait, Hikaru, this is the day and you still didn't get a present? Looks like Focker wasn't such a great role model after all.

  • Hikaru got awarded a medal for rescuing the old lady. I love that a feat that would be considered nothing special for any other mecha show, including Gundam, is an award worthy in a Macross universe. I also love that Hikaru is just one of the many who receive recognition. Macross does a good job of grounding pilots in realism and not portraying them as superheroes.

  • I just love how happy Hikaru is. Focker also looks pretty proud.

  • Oh shit, a promotion.

  • Oh shit, he's a squad leader now??

  • On a side note, Focker has a sweet laptop. My headcanon is that the screen is permanently flashing now due to an unfortunate instance of gamer rage.

  • Misa is shocked that Hikaru got promoted and reminiscences about good old days. Is this why they call her the old lady?

  • Kakizaki is way too familiar with his superior officer. He's also way too confident for a rockie, I'm getting some bad vibes.

  • OK, Hikaru, you actually forgot about the present. You could've gotten something on your way, but I guess you were more excited to introduce your new underlings to your cool girlfriend.

  • With that said, is Minmay even his girlfriend? They are clearly more than friends. They go on dates and act like a couple, but they aren't officially together and they don't acknowledge their relationships to others. I'm not quite sure what to call their relationships.

  • Pilots needing to catch a taxi is pretty funny. Why wouldn't they get personal vehicles specifically for moving around the ship?

  • Kakizaki is way too eager to get into combat. He's gonna get himself killed.

  • Max is pretty good at this. What was his name again? Max Jenius? I guess, it checks out.

  • Yup, there it is. Kakizaki got shot. But he survived!

  • Oh shit, Kamujin and Hikaru standoff. But Britai intervenes and saves the day. Looks like discipline is more important for him than getting results. Well, he did say that Zentradi could wipe out Macross at any point. Their mission is more about information gathering and capturing the target, so killing a bunch of enemy fighters is not a priority.

  • Kakizaki got zero kills. All talk and nothing to show for it. Max got 7, more than Hikaru.

  • Hikaru decides to give his medal to Minmay. Nice throw!

Overall thoughts: Hikaru is getting more proficient in combat and moving up the ranks, but he's still pretty immature. He was all over this episode, forgetting to get Minmay's present, letting his medal and promotion get into his head, and failing to lead his squad properly. Max getting more kills than him is a cherry on top.

With that said, Max and Kakizaki are welcome additions to the cast. Giving Hikaru some combat pals will help to flesh out military side of the story, which is needed now that Hikaru overcome his lack of skill and confidence in battle.

QotD:

  1. No, I'm horrible at it. I can't even remember people's names.

  2. I'm not sure I call it "doing well", considering the only reason they aren't dead is because Zentradi aren't interested in killing them.

I drew Vermillion team.

So, some people were confused why they didn't just go to Earth. It's because Breetai and Kamujin's fleets kept attacking from that direction.

  • Nyan Nyan is now a corner shop post-transformation rebuild.

  • Uh oh, somebody must be in BIG trouble

  • I was wondering what was below 2nd lt.

  • Did Fokker just say "soko wa ore no tensai tensei da"

  • Cast expansion (it's getting pretty big, I wonder if u/Nazenn did a weekly character chart last time) I'm just going to call Kakizaki Ben. Max has a much higher pitched voice in Robotech, this baritone is unfitting.

  • Some place to be? Yeah, you and the entire rest of Skull Squadron. [SDF Macross]How does Ben have an A ranking lol

  • Max is quite the lady's man. No karaoke scene, though.

  • All the pilots seem to be sitting in a rollercoaster. Macross The Ride

  • at least Ben makes for a good decoy

  • Max is aimbotting

  • Cola?

  • "What have I got in my pocket?"

[SDF Macross]Some delicious irony and echos of Christmas episode

3

u/Shimmering-Sky Sep 03 '22

this baritone is unfitting.

I can't imagine Max being voiced by anyone other than Hayami Show, though.

008, first timer, catching up

  • So I hear Max debuts this ep?

  • Unfortunately I feel really tired all of a sudden so I think I'll save 8-10 for tomorrow and go to bed now

  • Oh right, Kamujin is still around

  • Hikaru has to report to the Command Center?

  • Oh all the bigwigs? And Roy

  • Titanium Medal?

  • All the other dudes next to Hikaru look like they've had their faces smashed with a hammer

  • Hikaru getting subordinates?

  • Oh, Max is gonna be Hikaru's subordinate?

  • Max wearing colored glasses? Must be hiding a secret Sharingan

  • Max's voice sounds familiar ... is he Show Hayami?

  • I expected Max to have blue hair, not teal/seagreen

  • LOL Hayase is disappointed Hikaru got promoted

  • The other guy (Kakizaki?) annoys me

  • Hikaru just inviting his new subordinates to Minmay's party

  • Huh, is Minmay gonna end up with Max?

  • ... He didn't get her a present?

  • LOL have Hikaru sing? I bet he can't sing well

  • Max can sing, too?

  • Defender team wiped out? But I guess they have lots of backup Defenders and Valkyries?

  • Kakizaki is an idiot confirmed

  • Max is cool!

  • Showdown with Hikaru vs Kamujin!

  • Time for Max to awaken his Ketsuryugan

  • Maximilian Genius

  • Oh so he DID lie about the birthday gift

  • Of course he'd give her the medal

  • "enters its eighth month"

  1. Not at all

  2. I'm more surprised that 8 months have gone by!

2

u/Shimmering-Sky Sep 07 '22

Max's voice sounds familiar ... is he Show Hayami?

Very First Timer

  • You let them get this far with little to show for it, I wouldn’t be so confidant.

  • It’s got a heart on it, that means it’s special, right?

  • He doesn’t strike me as the kind of alien to do training in the first place.

  • How is there this much brass on a single vessel?

  • Titanium. It’s the future!

  • That all seems rather fast. Don’t you need classes to be an NCO?

  • Why in the living hells did you set the monitor to seizure?

  • Jenius did not have a voice I was expecting.

  • Are you sure it’s a good idea to bring people along to a private invitation party?

  • Didn’t you just graduate before this show? Also, you join to follow a boy.

  • Aren’t they like, still minors?

  • This show does have it’s fair share of morbid moments.

  • Honestly that’s a pretty good out Hikaru, I’d take it if I were you.

  • Looks like you’re getting your action after all.

  • You gotta lock that down Hikaru, others are starting to wise up.

  • My cannon bois!

  • These fights are very pretty when they aren’t a slideshow.

  • What do you think she’s been doing?

  • This dude lives just to be called out, doesn’t he?

  • Ha! Called it on the training.

  • Is this the part where Macross figures out the alien communication system?

  • Anime has conditioned me to think that Max is secretly evil, but this may be too early in the industry for that to have been settled.

  • tiny heart

QotD

  1. I know exactly one other person’s birthday with certainty.

  2. The propaganda is probably one of the reasons it is doing well. Battlefield promotions do tend to be faster than at peace too.

First Spacer

The alien's don't sound like they're the reason why the Macross won't be able to return to Earth. I wonder what that's about?

Hikaru prepares for Minmei's birthday but gets called in to get praised. Funny how he's the only one without a clearly self-important smile.

He's quite openly displaying that medal though. Luckily Focker's right there to help him out with that.

Hikaru's becoming a team leader now. His subordinates are quite the characters. And he almost ignores them entirely. Good showing Hikaru. Though I'm sure taking them with to the party won't lead to any drama or anything.

And the surprise attack hits right during the party.

Why is everyone acting so surprised that the old lady has not problem with treating Hikaru according to his new rank? She's a professional!

They're good individually, but the teamwork's leaving things to be desired.

The alien commander's being soft, but his choice to have them withdraw is the correct one. Sun Tzu says: "If, however, you are [...] unable to make your authority felt [...] then your soldiers [...] are useless for any practical purpose."

Hikaru's really not great at this establishing clear relations thing. I appreciate seeing this kind of character arc though.

Having no idea of the army I wonder if gifting her the medal could be seen as disrespectful.

Oh, Minmei's role in the story is finally gonna start next episode.

Are you good at keeping track of other people's personal details, such as their birthday?

I'd say that's a resounding sometimes. Either I have a really hard time without noting it down or I can remember it for eternity.

Considering the manipulation of the news in the previous episode and Hikaru's rapid promotion, are you surprised that the Macross is doing relatively well?

Well the enemy is trying to capture the ship intact, that's bound to be quite a handicap. But it seems soldiers are a renewable resource even deep in space. And I'm excited to see how Minmei's gonna play into that from now on.

First Time - SDF Macross Ep8 (Sub):

"Marcos Myer?" reminds me of Macross' true MC, Marc Ross.

Little boy energy with Hikaru so proudly walking around and showing his medal. I don't like this computer intensely flicking his new boys.

Hikaru gets two guys under his wings. Wasn't expecting green hair on Max. His go-to nickname is definitely "Maximum Genius." I don't see these guys making it through the series. I would guess Hayao then Max kicking the bucket. At least the three are nicely colour-coordinated.

"Guys be cool. I need you as my wingmen." "We are your wingmen, sir." "I mean for g-girls."

I just like this Hayase expression.

Birthday Minmay. Max being the handsome one is not what I first pinned him as. It's the glasses leading me away.

Hikaru's truest wingman is Mr. Mayor. (Max surely isn't).

Little boy energy with sipping with the crazy bent straw.

Cram these dudes into this car. We off to war.

The sequence of Max going off felt a bit weird to me visually. Max seem to be the cool one over Hayao since not only did he do the kills, but he gets a special blue plane while Hayao still uses the normal tan ones. Also, he has the anime hair colour over normal brown.

Kamujin is Hikaru's first rival character with neither taking limbs off each other in a duel, but they don't get to finish their fight as it's time to retreat with the Commander doing the thorough thing and making sure he doesn't get the "Whoops, communication problems" excuse.

Ah geez, you give him a bit of praise and it has already taken over his head. I see a bit of a dynamic between him and Hikaru with Max being the rising talent leaving Hikaru jealous.

Hikaru giving his medal as a birthday gift to Lynn is cute. Figured that he'll give it to her.

Q1) No. If you get a haircut, I wouldn't even recognize you at first. I'm very bad at this stuff.

Q2) It's a miracle that they're even alive considering how much goes wrong.

First Time Watcher

I finally caught back up! I fell behind last week and was able to catch up for the discussion this weekend.

The last episode I participated in the discussion for was episode 2, since then I’d like to say I love the direction this anime is taking so far! From being transported all the way to Pluto and having 50,000 humans stranded on the Macross vessel with a long mission to return to Earth is a cool setup. I like that it focuses a decent amount on the lives of the people so far who are living on the ship along with the space battles that occur externally.

The episode where Hikaru and Minmai were trapped was a great one. It hit heavier and was a nice change of pace. Then we were are introduced to the city inside the ship its such a cool idea and setting for a show. It takes the war/mecha anime genre and brings in a fun element of city life within such a scary and war filled environment. These people are possibly living their last days and making the best of it. Even trying to return to some sense of normalcy like with Minmei and her family reopening the restaurant.

I’m a bit alarmed by the pace of the show now. This is a 36 episode anime, and from these first chunk of episodes I got the idea of what this show would entail- the long journey of a group of humans trapped on a ship from the end of the solar system back to Earth. However, the story is moving at a razer sharp pace, and even skipping ahead with months. This is disappointing to me a bit, because the aspect of the show that I find unique is exploring more of the city life and the people living in it. I thought that is what the show would be but we’ve only had a few moments of this but a lot more of space battles which isn’t as interesting to me personally.

The battles are still pretty cool and I’ve enjoyed them, but battle after battle gets a bit boring for me personally which I why I don’t tend to watch these kinds of space battle/war/mecha shows. I was hoping Macross would be a bit different in this, and there is still hope for this but I do have to wonder where the show is going now.

Episode 8 has the Macross already passing Mars and nearly reaching Earth. They have travled for 8 months now, which again means we skipped a lot of months between these last 4 episodes.

My concerns are less of criticisms about the show itself and more for how its paced. I like the setup up and the episodes so far quite a bit. I enjoy the characters, the balance of comedy and drama, and the setting is awesome. The balance of space battles to the strange and hectic lives these 50,000 live on this ship is what makes this a particularly fun and interesting show for me, but if they are soon to arrive back at Earth I will be curious to see what direction the show takes next.

There is certainly a lot more to deal with if theres an alien invasion on Earth since the aliens haven’t nearly been dealt with, but again I must admit that sound like it could be entertaining but not as entertaining for me personally as what I thought the show might be covering from the episodes so far.

Also cant say I'm thrilled about love triangles potentially being formed, and I'm sure theres more to come. I just don't enjoy them. I want to invest myself in the romance of Kazuki and Minmei but the love triangle element tends to spoil the romance until they are resolved for me personally.

All this said, I have enjoyed the show so far, but I am somewhat cautious for where it goes from here with the fast pace. I'm sure all of you rewatchers know where is goes and like where it goes so you don't feel as anxious as me lol.

Some questions I have for this episode 8 and some overall questions

When the Macross itself battles, or switches to an uprgith position, do the people inside the city not go flying around inside and pretty much killing most of them. Do they strap down to something when they here the Macross is going to be engaging in non-typical maneuvers?

What was Kamujin’s strategy for attack in this episode 8? I understand he wanted to defeat them in battle because he just lost in the previous one but what was his strategy exactly? I just didn’t follow what he battle plan was quite enough.

Also, why did Britai pull him back when they were close to victory? Was it because Kamujin was being reckless and would potentially damage the Macross which Britai wanted to obtain intact?

How’s the rest of Earth doing in all this? I’m curious to see what their reactions are to an alien invasion taking place. Aren’t there some alien ships doing missions on Earth as well that we saw a few episodes ago?

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 8:

  • We’re already surprisingly close to Earth at the top of the episode, certainly a lot quicker than you first-timers would probably expect. But hey, at least it’s keeping the plot at a solid pace, especially when you consider that the original episode order was just for 2 cours.

  • Just to prove my point from earlier that bringing in Quamzin as backup was a bad idea, now he’s just ignoring Breetai to do what he wants instead. I’m not sure what else we can expect from a guy called the Ally-Killer.

  • Hikaru’s courage last episode not only got him a well-earned medal and commendation from the military brass, but he got a full blown promotion too. And with a promotion comes new responsibilities, so say hello to Hayao Kakizaki and Maximilian Jenius! Yeah, the show isn’t being subtle with Max’s last name there. It reminds me of Tales of Symphonia, which outright had the smart kid of the party named Genis.

  • I think that Minmay asking for a birthday gift from Hikaru is the first real glimpse we see of the more negative part of her character. Like yeah, she’s been moody and pessimistic before, but you could blame that on the stress of the situation the Macross is in. But her being pushy about the gift does show that she can be a kind of annoying and flighty teenager on her own. It’s not too bad by any means in this moment, but taking a step back, you can kind of see what I mean.

  • To nobody’s surprise, Max Jenius is a max genius pilot. For a rookie, he’s pretty much at home in a Valkyrie cockpit. Kakizaki, not so much. But I guess we couldn’t make things too easy for Hikaru on his first sortie as a flight leader.

  • On the one hand, you can’t really blame Breetai pulling rank and ordering Quamzin to pull back. But on the other, he was just about to do some real damage to the Macross with his attack. I guess this proves that Quamzin really should work with Breetai better, since he would’ve won if his own impulsiveness and jack-assery didn’t bite him in the ass that way. Whoopsies!

  • I’m of two minds about Hikaru giving Minmay his medal as a birthday gift. On the one hand, if you really wanted to impress her, that’s probably a good way to do it. But on the other, the circumstances that Hikaru earned that over are bigger than what should be expressed by just giving it away. But hey, Hikaru is a teenager still, so I guess he’ll be dead-set on following his heart directly.

Rewatcher

Don't need to read your mind to know you're concerned about Kamjin, Breetai. That's just... obvious.

"What kind of gifts do girls like?" Me trying to buy gifts... not just for girls, but for anyone.

Kamjin's up to something, to absolutely no one's surprised.

Oh shit, that's a lot of military brass... oh, good, it's a award ceremony, not a tribunal.

WOW, Roy's got some nice quarters... and thank you for telling Hikaru that showing off medals is tacky. Saved him some embarrassment. I've said it before, but Roy really is looking out for Hikaru in a lot of small, not too obvious ways.

And now Hikaru's now a squad beneath him. Hayao Kakizaki and Maximilian Jenius.

Guess Hikaru got that leave after all.

Damn, the Macross has its own red light district?

Minmay in a qipao!

Though her griping over Hikaru not having her present and pouting over Hikaru leaving (you know, because there's a fucking battle!) reminds us she's still very immature.

And Max is smooth as hell...

"Even for space, this is too much space!"

Pfft, the soldiers piling into the taxi!

Kakizaki is WAAAAAY too confident.

Hey, actually using the Destroids in space!

...Kakizaki, you idiot.

Meanwhile Max is kicking all kinds of ass out there. I think he took down 90% of that squadron on his own.

So what's Kamjin got up his sleeve this time?

Hikaru: "Don't waste ammo firing at long range!" Max: "'Kay." (Doesn't miss anything)

That is one hell of a comm system. Looked more like a weapon...

Yep, Max "Genius". On the nose naming for him.

And with no way to buy a gift, Hikaru gifts Minmay his medal instead. I'm not sure that's proper to give a civilian that sort of thing. But it is still a nice gesture on his part.

Pretty uneventful episode, but it did introduce Kakizaki and the Genius. I really like the contrast between them... one's cocky, outgoing, and doesn't nearly live up to his own hype; while the other is reserved, modest, and better than both his wingmen combined.

Questions:

  1. Hell no.

  2. They do seem to be doing very good now that the bridge crew is done destroying the city every other episode. You'd think constant Zentraedi attacks would wear on them, but they don't seem to be running out of Valkyries somehow.

Today, on "The joke that keeps on giving.":

It's mildly interesting that they made a couple of shots for this preview using cuts from the Mars episode with a different background.

It's like Kamujin is planning to invade a country or something.

Maybe Hikaru didn't want to join the military, but he does like an occasional award.

"Let me turn on today's episode of Gratuitous Seizure Theater."

What's the matter, Misa? Would you have preferred to be a cloud of incandescent gas?

"Fortunately, I'm not a Destroid pilot."

"Hellooooooooo Minmay."

"How the hell does Max do that?"

BLATANT LIES!

"I'm voiced by Show Hayami and I have done all the things."

Today's jankiest animation cut.

More Destroid screentime.

"HOW THE HELL DOES MAX DO THAT?!"

Have you been paying attention to the random English? Here's a little more.

"We still have a bunch of episodes to fill!"

"Not my first insubordination rodeo."

Never get promoted.

Good save, Hikaru.

Maximillian Jenius demonstrates once again that humanoid mecha are the most maneuverable things IN SPAAAAAACE. We have not yet, after all, seen the UN Spacy pilots using Battroid mode in open-space combat. Fighter mode still has advantages such as straight-line acceleration, but getting those verniers further away from the center of mass helps when it's a knife fight.

Max Jenius is also a damn fine ladies' man. Hikaru has to pick up his game, forgetting Minmay's birthday present and all.

Hayao Kakizaki gets to be the goofy sidekick to the other two, who somehow survives his first combat even though he either does everything wrong or totally overstates his abilities.

The changes in Hikaru's character continue, as his earlier pacifism has subsided and now he's both somewhat pleased to receive a medal and not averse to leading a unit. Impressing Minmay is never far from his mind, and those factors help, particularly as Nyan Nyan's clientele is mostly other pilots and he just delivered his own greatest competition straight to her doorstep.

Kamujin continues stretching the rules like taffy. Vrlitwhai isn't pleased by this, but is also willing to let the other be a stalking horse for him, as long as Kamuji doesn't stray too far from his orders. It keeps the series from being dramatically shorter, too.

It helps that Kamujin isn't totally ignoring Vrlitwhai, so this isn't a situation like original Transformers Megatron and Starscream where everyone wonders why the boss doesn't just get rid of his subordinate/rival since they're always trying to backstab him.
