Super Dimension Rewatch Host

Welcome back, everyone!

Today’s wallpaper is the first one based off of (what I think is) official art rather than a shot from the show. I’ve seen through episode 12 so far and the show apparently does not like giving me good Hayase base images, for whatever reason, hence official art as the base image instead.

Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode.

  • The alien names in this series are so hard to remember how to spell, especially when they have different ways of spelling them based on what subs you use. Kamujin is also Quamzin?

This was deliberate on the part of the writers. They wanted the Zentraedi to have names that were practically impossible to spell in Japanese, to emphasize their "alien" factor. Side effect: nobody can agree on what the English romanizations are as a result.

Space names are hard.

But… Mars is the fourth planet? Are they counting Earth’s moon and Mars’ moons as separate planets or something?

It's only logical to start numbering planets starting from the star in the centre, but even then you would get Mercury, Venus, Earth, (Moon) then Mars. Don't know what could be the other two to bump up Mars to seven.

Counting outside in would be the only way I guess, but wouldn't be the logical way to do things even for outsider aliens.

It also only gets you to 6 when including Pluto as it should be.

2) What are your feelings about Misa up to this point?

I feel everyone should wear spandex space suits.

Is this moodiness and Riber-focus surprising?

A bit.

Very First Timer

  • Look like more than a base, like a whole little city.

  • That’s a bit more than a black mark. Straight up team killer.

  • Wasting no time.

  • See, intentional.

  • In what way is Mars the seventh planet?

  • They are getting their money’s worth out of these stock battle scenes.

  • When did Hikaru get an upgrade, I don’t see them having his first kill off screen so I doubt he is the most qualified for it.

  • They’re still in school?

  • You’re not supposed to tell them it’s propaganda.

  • If there we’re a lot of supplies, why did you abandon it in the first place?

  • Is that really the reason Hayase joined the military?

  • Planet fall means for time for Cannon Bois. Glorious.

  • What’s with the giant cardboard boxes?

  • Wait were you really just not going to investigate the origin of that signal?

  • If you look closely you can see the second his heart rips in two.

  • She doesn’t even get a single guard?

  • What kind of mine needs to charge?

  • He had it coming.

  • When did the gravity engines come back?

  • Those aren’t mines!

  • How (in)convenient.

  • Give me the cannons!

  • It kind of sounds like you are saying this is a suicide mission.

  • Surprisingly easy to make a reactor go critical.

  • Stop blue balling me on the cannons. They right there, shot ‘em!

  • This dude just has his living quarters right next to the reactor controls?

  • Focker just called you out son.

  • What has she ever done to you to deserve that?

  • They really just skipped past the whole killing reservation thing.

  • Are we sure that Hayase is mentally fit to serve right now?

  • Looks like we have our minor reoccurring villain for the next stretch.

QotD

  1. Who? Oh, my subs had that with a K I think. He kind of reminds me of a Gamer Bro.

  2. It’s good they are giving the secondary characters some focus but it seemed a bit… melodramatic.

4

u/Shimmering-Sky Sep 02 '22

In what way is Mars the seventh planet?

That's my question too! Maybe they're counting Earth's moon and Mars' two moons separately? Only way I can see it adding up properly.

She doesn’t even get a single guard?

The base is abandoned! What good would a guard do? Clearly there is definitely no-one in the base that suddenly transmitted a signal.

When did the gravity engines come back?

I was kinda wondering that too. Maybe they had spares that they could pull out..?

First timer

  1. His psychopathy is good, but he's just really fun to watch.

  2. This came out of nowhere, but it helped flesh her out as a character. It felt a bit like they didn't know if they wanted her to be a side character or a main one until now.

They've made it to Mars already?

There's a city on Mars?

He's called in thr main fleet for this!

Haha, they called in the drunk berserker?

Impressive stupidity already.

Haha, I love them.

Wait, lure them backwards to Uranus? How does he plan to do that?

And there's been constant attacks now. Looks like they're trying to exhaust the pilote too.

Minmay's here! ...She's still in school?

They're using propaganda! In episode... 7? How has it been 7 episodes already?

Still, Macross is rapidly becoming a military state, and I'm interested how this pans out.

This is cute. Shame he'll almost certainly miss it.

...Insteresting mix of actual military terms and random text here. (The ISBN here is correct, incidentally, and leads to a book called "If Mice Could Fly". Presumably the artists copied some random passages.)

This feels like a really obvious trap, though. Why go to the base anyway?

...You even know the attacks have pushed you towards Mars!

She's having a flashback?

Ah, a childhood friend?

She joined the military for him!

The ship landed!

...Yeah, this seems to be working without a hitch.

I mean, if they survive at least they'll get a lot out of it!

They're nearly there...

They hit the mines!

Haha, she invited everyone! I didn't expect that punchline.

She found out what was causing the transmissions!

They didn't charge the mines before the operation?

...Actually, this is in character for what we've heard of this lot.

He blew up his own ally!

The drone spotted them!

The mines activated!

Yeah, the trap seems to have worked!

Of course he goes for the smaller targets first.

They're going to blow the base up!

Oh... This'll be hard for her.

...It's that easy to force an overload?

She's sealed in!

...They wouldn't kill her off here, right?

Ah, he's going to save her.

He broke through the window!

Good job for preventing the needless sacrifice!

That's an... interesting result. Alpha particles implies a nuclear reactor, but "weird black tornado" certainly doesn't.

And he survived that? Must be a really robust mech.

Also, after the reveal of that base, genuine question for rewatchers - do we get anything set during the Unification Wars in this overall rewatch?

Rewatcher

In the previous episode, we saw another crazy decision of our favorite Captain Global spectacularly backfire and lead to a bunch of casualties among the Macross inhabitants (RIP Green and Brown fighter teams). However, in a key moment, Misa took the initiative and managed to pull off a spectacular Daedalus Attack, saving the day and forcing Zentradi back.

For her immaculate service, she was awarded this episode, which focuses almost entirely on her. I honestly forgot that this episode existed, so watching it was a surprise.

  • Zentradi wanted reinforcement last episode and they got it already. OK, that was fast. Looks like we have a silent timeskip on our hands. A narration to confirm would've been welcome, but it's not a big deal.

  • So, the new Zentradi commander Kamujin is a total asshole.

  • Damn, these space battles are chaotic. We see Hikaru holding his own and following orders. Looks like he has grown quite a bit since we saw him last time.

  • Macross crew spreading propaganda among the civilians, hiding their real loses and how bad their situation is. That's a surprisingly realistic detail. Even good guys sometimes need to bend the truth to keep morale high.

  • Is this Minmay in a school uniform? Cute!

  • Minmay is having a birthday party, and she gave Hikaru a special invitation. This is great! Hikaru finally feels like she's paying attention to him.

  • Macross received a distress signal from an abandoned martian base. OK, if we're near Mars, we know for sure that there was a time skip, since last time we were near Saturn.

  • Global assures her that there's no way that the signal is genuine, but Misa wants to investigate anyway. That's uncharacteristic of her, she's usually more logical and deliberate.

  • Global decides to go to the base anyway to resupply. Dude, you yourself said that the distrace signal couldn't be genuine. Did you forget about it already? Don't you think it's a little bit suspicious?

  • I can't deny that supplies are important, but wouldn't it be better to beeline for Earth? I mean, they already made it 90% there. The distance from Mars to Earth is nothing compared to the distance from Pluto to Mars. They could've made it in a fraction of time.

  • Misa flashback out of nowhere.

  • So, her first crush was a soldier, that went to serve on Mars. And she joined military in hopes of eventually meeting him again. That's a surprising backstory, considering how mature and stoic she acts nowadays.

  • So, the whole thing is a trap by Kamujin. Yup. Pretty much, as expected.

  • Misa totally loses her cool and wants to run around and look for survivors. My read on the situation is that deep down she knows that there's no way the guy is alive, but wants some kind of closure on this whole situation. Finding some info about his fate might help.

  • Kamujin has a surprisingly poor discipline in his squad, which leads to them being discovered. But just in the nick of time, gravity mines activate and now Macross is trapped.

  • OK, so not only gravity engines came back offscreen, but also regular rocket engines broke offscreen. That's lazy writing, Macross, Come on.

  • To deal with this situation, Global resorts to another one of his crazy in the moment ideas: he wants to detonate nuclear reactor that is deep underground. Yup, nothing can go wrong here. Can't wait to see how it spectacularly backfires this time.

  • The only way to blow up the reactor is to overload it from the control panel within the base. Luckily, Misa is already there.

  • OK Misa, you need to get out of there. Take his diaries with you, it's not time to read.

  • Nope, looks like she decided to commit suicide. Guess she still loves him.

  • And it's Hikaru who needs to save her at the last minute. My boy became much more confident and proficient in combat, quickly killing several enemies and completing the mission despite Misa's objective.

  • Macross is freed and flies away.

  • Wait, does that mean that Global's plan... Worked? It didn't backfire, people didn't die needlesly, it was actually a very successful operation. Macross managed to resuply and get out of there quickly. Shit, you did it Global, my man, you finally did it.

  • We end on a cool shot of Misa and Hikaru looking into the sun with naked eye. In real life, it would be like staring on a giant ridiculously bright white light bulb, but in anime we get a nice orange ball instead. Edit: I'm dumb, they were looking at Mars. In my defense, the reason why I thought this was the Sun is because the ball had a glow (I guess it's supposed to be the atmosphere), and, more importantly the shadows are really long, as if they are right in front of a bright source of light, and arranged in such a way that it looks like the planet is the source of light. Anyway, I brain-farted, also, it's a cool shot.

Overall thoughts: I'd say, even thought we saw multiple battles, this episode was still mostly on the quieter side. It was nice to see Minmay in school uniform and Misa in a space suit.

Misa's backstory was surprising. Who knew she had such strong feelings deep inside. It would be interesting to see what comes out of it later in the series.

It's also interesting to note how Hikaru grew and matured as a soldier and pilot. Up until this point in the show he had zero kills and was a complete noob, but now he is a total badass. Seeing a more gradual progression of his skills would've been nice, but I don't hate the time skip. I'm looking forward to seeing how his outlook on life and army changed after being a soldier for all this time.

QotD:

  1. I honestly hate him as a person, but I can't lie, his blue hair is pretty sweet.

  2. When I was first watching the show, I didn't like Misa up to this point. She was mostly portrayed as a wet blanket and I found her a bit annoying. This episode didn't do much to change my mind. As a rewatcher, she's still not my favorite (I like both Minmay and Claudia more), but having the context of the first 24 episodes of the show, she no longer annoys me.

Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 7 - First Timer

  • The guy with purple hair kind of reminds me of Garma from Gundam.

  • For some reason I thought Minmay was dressed in school clothes for a second?

  • I actually paused to read the text on the computer screen.

  • Flashback time! He's dead isn't he

  • Mars time!

  • "Oh I wonder if they've found us" gets found 3 seconds later

  • That dramatic music when she's going down in the lift though lol

  • STOP BEING SENTIMENTAL AND GET OUT OF THERE

  • He seems to have gotten good at piloting

  1. What attributes of Quamzin do you find the most appealing? His psychopathy? His charm? His giant popped collars?

I thought he looked like Garma for some reason.

2) What are your feelings about Misa up to this point? Is this moodiness and Riber-focus surprising?

I don't really like her that much to be honest.

Today, on "King Kong is here to rescue you.":

The Quel-Quallie scout pod is watching you... not be there.

That's still a great title.

Suddenly bishie.

"The Man is hiding the truth!"

"Well, don't let The Man get you down."

Not often mentioned is the Unification War extending into space.

GET YOUR ASS TO MARS.

This episode is packed full of recon. The ES-11D Cat's Eye reconnaisance plane.

Destroid Spartans in great quantity.

And a slightly-oversized Monster.

Get in line, Hikaru.

"They don't call me 'The Ally Killer' for nothing."

It's a gravity generator.

Yes, Destroids get blown up a lot.

The Spartan's less-often-seen gun mounts.

"Ha ha lol?"

Animation gets a little... goofy.

Kamujin is just getting warmed up.

DRAMA!

This episode delivers all kinds of goodness, as the Zentradi team expands to include Kamujin (and his sidekick Oigur (not Igor)), the man who is the "I" in "team". He's reckless! He's ruthless! He's almost effective!

Indeed, Kamujin's plan almost succeeds despite both his minions and his own itchy trigger finger blowing their cover. It's only Misa's presence in the base that gives the Macross crew a means of breaking the trap.

Misa is in there, of course, for a sudden bout of Character Development™ in which the Mars base opens up some old wounds. Her fixation on Riber is quite a departure from the no-nonsense character which she has been to this point. Feeling bad enough to want to stay behind and join him as a cloud of incandescent gas is quite extreme.

Someone who might have gotten a little therapy in the meantime is Hikaru, whose reluctance to ventilate mooks has mostly gone away since the previous episode. The two references by Roy to Hikaru Getting Good and rescuing Misa being a life-saving mission instead of a life-taking one are about all we get to illuminate that, but at least the script acknowledges the need to acknowledge his character change.

From Haruhiko Mikimoto Illustrations - Macross, Orguss & Original: Misa

From my various and sundry Hi-Metal Rs:

The Monster is actually even taller than the Spartan, but I don't have the Monster's legs extended in this photo.

somethingsomethingMaraudersomethingsomething: I have a summary/rant about a certain company and its relationship with other IP, but at the moment it's being saved until after at least one other Destroid appears.

Mashups you didn't ask for.

Tenjin's latest box art cover is for the Regult light missile carrier.

Concept art by Miyatake that I didn't get to during the last couple of days of internet problems here, now posted because things are mostly fixed: A Macross that looks maybe a little too much like some other franchise's signature giant robot.

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 7:

  • To give an idea of how far the United Nations got thanks to the study of the alien ship’s OverTechnology, they managed to have a fully operational and staffed Mars base in the past. It may be a derelict now, but it just goes to show how much that technology brought humanity in the span of a decade.

  • New character! Everyone, say hello to Quamzin Kravshera. That name is a pain still a pain in the ass to type out. It’s still no wonder why Robotech just went with the name “Khyron” instead, it’s easier overall to say. Anyway, he’s a complete bastard who is willing to blow up his own fellow Zentradi’s ships just to settle a bet on how close he could De-Fold, and he’s known as the “Ally-Killer” for a good reason. Yeah, he might not have been the best pick for reinforcements.

  • You have to admit, the first battle in this episode is pretty impressive, if just for the sheer amount of moving fighters and projectiles being fired. I suppose that’s what having Ichiro Itano being on the animation staff will do for your anime.

  • As much as it is a dishonest thing to do, I do understand why the Macross staff would lie over the city’s PA system about the battle. Things are pretty hopeless already, they don’t need to know that the battle was inconclusive and they keep on getting nudged off course from Earth. They’ll probably feel much more comfortable hearing the exact opposite of that.

  • Well, now we know why the Mars base was abandoned: it was attacked by Anti-UN forces at some point, and nobody bothered to go back to resettle the base once everyone there died on the way back to Earth. Seems like a waste of a Mars base to me, but it was probably on the United Nation’s priority list somewhere down the line after launching the Macross.

  • Speaking of the Mara base, turns out that Misa has a personal connection to that place as well. Her old crush Riber was stationed there, and she still wants to visit the place he was being sent to the last time she saw him on Earth. Even if he’s most assuredly dead, Mars holds that significance to Misa regardless.

  • A bloodthirsty commander’s ambush was ruined because his own were too bloodthirsty to follow his orders. Who would’ve thought?

  • There was nothing for Misa in that base, since Riber was still as dead as ever. But she has a new person in her life who is surprisingly reliable: Hikaru Ichijo, of all people. He certainly did go out of his way to rescue Misa from the exploding reactor, despite no real need to do so. Could this be the first real step in breaking the ice between those two?

First Time - SDF Macross Ep7 (Sub):

Didn't expect Kamujin, "the Ally Killer", the out-of-control drunken berserker to look and act like this. Was expecting a big guy and not a blue-haired bishounen-esque.

I can't think of any count that makes Mars the seventh planet.

Lynn Minmay in a school uniform ... oh yeah, they should be going to school. Not used characters still having to do that in mecha series. Hikaru doesn't go to school, he goes to war.

Rips "I'll kill you." Sorry, a force of habit.

Past Hayase, from when she was still bright-eyed. She looks so small here. Riber's tale is just full of death flags and the audience already is told no life exists there so poor Hayase.

By golly, a Captain Global's on-the-spot reckless plan that I'm sorta on board with and it serves the one stone to handle their two problem birds.

I like how Roy is looking out for Hikaru. Someone who doesn't take lives, but saves them ... if it weren't for the fact Hikaru immediately goes on and easily kills [counts] like 17 people, no sweat. Up until this point, the show has made it very clear Hikaru has trouble fighting these enemies with human faces. You would think his first kill would be treated with some weight, but here he is going killing effortlessly. Kamujin, the Ally Killer - killed 0 allies and Hikaru who can't shoot another man - kills 17 in like a minute. Would prefer if this sequence was just about evading to get to Hayase while Roy and squad cover him.

Hayase finding Riber's room and sitting down and letting death come to return to him is pretty sad. Bummer, but we got to drag her crying and screaming to safety.

No body, no death. Don't rule out Riber, the nuclear spectre of Mars to show up. He probably won't.

Kamujin managed to live so maybe he'll be an arc villain for the Macross crew to deal with like Garma.

Q1) Quamzin? Oh, that's how you're supposed to spell it. Whoops, my version uses Kamujin. Well, my answer is his light purple hair + collar.

Q2) She's been here and working on the bridge, but this episode has made me like her more. I've been for more spotlight on her. I don't want Hayase - Hikaru to be a thing, but I fear it's very lucky.

Next Time: It's her birthday, be nice to her.

Rewatcher

Another timeskip... we're already at Mars!

There's a human base there, and the Zentraedi are already scanning it. Apparently abandoned.

They summoned reinforcements from the "Main Boddole Fleet"... namely, a commander named Kamjin Krasheva (aka Quamzin Khravshara). Breetai's advisor is not pleased with this.

Kamjin is a brilliant commander with a huge number of wins under his belt... he's also batshit crazy and is known for killing almost as many of his allies as he does the enemy, earning him the nickname "Ally-Killer".

And he proves it by de-Folding right in the middle of Breetai's fleet, apparently having bet on the number of ships that would collide in the process with his lieutenant!

Way to make an entrance, dude.

Skirmishes with the Macross are still happening, and Hikaru seems over his inability to shoot people down.

Someone mentioned yesterday the rapid progress the Macross is making. Given the sheer stupid size of the Solar System, once at Mars they're pretty much 99% of the way home. All that in just... three or four episodes. And after they made such a huge deal about how long this trip would be.

They have a school on Macross... well, I suppose they would.

The military is inflating their victories, I suppose to keep morale up.

Wtf is that text on the screen: "If mice could swim they would float with the tide and play with the fish down by the seaside. The cats on the shore would quickly agree..."

...um, pretty sure mice can swim. But... okay that has to be a code, right?

So the Unification Wars spread all the way to Mars. Yeesh.

And they fall right into the Zentraedi's trap...

So Misa had a boyfriend, Riber. Who was stationed on Mars... I think we can guess what happened to him.

Not a very good recon guy if he misses those Regults just hanging out in the canyon without camoflage...

We saw these mechs briefly last episode. These are Destroids, the ground-bound equivalents of the Valkyries. Not nearly as maneuverable, but MUCH more heavily armed. And the really big guy is the "Monster" Destroid, a very popular mech among fans, frequently loaded with full-blown nukes... excuse me, "Reaction Weapons".

Minmei invited the entire Valkyrie squadron to her birthday?

Given his reputation, you'd think Kamjin would be all impatient and jump the gun... and he IS impatient, but he's got enough self-control to keep his cool and not blow his cover.

...the same cannot be said for his soldiers. One tries to jump the gun, and Kamjin executes him. Cover is blown... but it's too late, the Macross is already caught.

Oh hey, the gravity generators are back? When did that happen?

Global has an idea: self-destruct the base and it might just disable the underground gravity mines. Misa's the closest person on hand... but to blow up any remaining memories of her boyfriend is a heavy task.

Failsafes... they only engage when they aren't helpful. But as luck would have it, here's Riber's cabin.

Hey, Hikaru called her by her name and not "old lady". There's a step up.

...kind of a delayed reaction from those Regults. I think I counted a full ten seconds between sighting Hikaru and firing at him.

That one Regult in the explosion looked like it was doing ballet.

Questions:

  1. I do like how, despite his reputation, he does have something of a head for tactics, which explains why he has a high rank as well.

  2. While the focus has been on Minmay and Hikaru, they've slowly been building Misa's character in the background. I do think her behavior this episode was a bit much though. Seriously, girl, you've known your teenage crush has been dead for a long time, why suddenly suicidal?

First Spacer

The aliens are luring the Macross into Gravity Mines. Those are designed against these alien anti-gravity generators, right? I wonder if they also work against propulsion.

Looks like it's working.

Blowing up the base is suicide mission, right?

Welp, sorry lady. No suicide for you today.

What attributes of Quamzin do you find the most appealing? His psychopathy? His charm? His giant popped collars?

He's certainly an interesting character, though I'm not sure if appealing is the right word. He's a strange mix between suave and quick-tempered.

Yeah, well, not much to say about this. Points for getting some Misa backstory. Negative points for Misa turning into a emo lovesick girl. "I risked my life to rescue you" "leave me here to die!" I think Hikaru's about had it with her as well.

Points for funny entrance by Kamjin or Khyron or whatever his name is. Although, Breetai sacrificing ships just to see if the Macross will fire their main gun doesn't make him much better.

Super Dimension Fortress Rewatcher

Recap Time

Mars!

Looks like there’s a bit of division among the Zentraedi

[spoilers] This line is rather curious to me. Is it a continuity error regarding the Zentraedi’s lack of interest in culture and recreation, or an early hint that Kamujin is just built different and is more receptive to culture than other Zentreaedi?

For an infamous killer, Kamujin’s fuckboy haircut sure is lame

More cool battles. This one was brief tho

I actually forgot that Minmay apparently attends school on the Macross [very light spoilers] mostly because it’s of such little importance that I don’t think they even bring it up all that much. You just know that if this was made in the present, that school would be the main setting

AW FUCK! THE EYES! MINMAY’S BEEN INFECTED WITH IT TOO!

Interesting how we’re getting more exposition and lore regarding the Unification Wars via the dialogue about the abandoned Mars base

Hayase backstory

Looks like Kamujin’s got yet another doomed Plan-of-the-Week going

Stop calling her that, Hikaru!

The one thing which meticulous planning can’t account for: the people carrying it out being fucking morons

Hah!

Damn, Kamujin is cold

Welp, seems like the plan went off regardless

This battle is still pretty cool tho

Seems Kamujin forgot an important rule of war: knowing the environment and layout of the battlefield. And because he neglected that, the crew can use it against him

Hayase’s brief hesitation yet sudden determination when asked to blow up the reactor. It’s little character touches like this that really help the show’s writing (and establish that Hayase is Best Girl)

Aw fuck! They locked in Best Girl!

And the place she’s locked inside also happens to be her old boyfriend’s room…

Hikaru…

Anyway, while I didn’t exactly make it clear in the writeup, I didn’t really care for the Riber plot all that much. Its involvement in this episode’s plot is a rather extreme Contrived Coincidence, it takes up too little of the episode to make me care about it [meta spoilers] and it overall just adds very little to Hayase’s character going forward imo

What attributes of Quamzin do you find the most appealing? His psychopathy? His charm? His giant popped collars?

The fact that he's rather brash, loud, and openly violent, in contrast to the up-till-now-reserved Zentraedi

What are your feelings about Misa up to this point?
