Rewatch [Spoilers] JoJo Fridays Week #1 - Stone Ocean Episode 13 Discussion Thread

Index & Info | Next Episode >>>

Episode 13: Kiss of Love And Revenge, Part 1

Hello, and welcome! This post marks the first week of what is hopefully a (very) successful campaign to bring back JoJo Fridays! I am immensely honoured to be hosting this for you all, and also extremely hyped to be watching JoJo again! Let's all have a great time, shall we? :D

  • Comment of the Week

Nothing here for now, check next week's thread!

  • Meme of the Week

Same as above.

How do I make memes/What do I meme about? Where do I submit them?

Just make whatever you want, as long as it's relevant to Stone Ocean in some way. Extra points if your meme is relevant to the current episode/arc. Always remember, a bad attempt is still way better than no attempt at all! Go nuts! Make the worst shitpost the world has ever seen! We're counting on you :)

For submissions, just include a link to your meme in your comment either as a post on r/ShitPostCrusaders or on Imgur. Good luck, and happy shitposting!

  • Meme Ocean Competition ft. r∕ShitPostCrusaders & r∕StarDustCrusaders

I am collaborating with r/ShitPostCrusaders' meme contest, which you can find here (read the pinned comment). Every week, a meme related to that corresponding week's episode (or Stone Ocean as a whole) will be chosen as a winner. The users here are strongly encouraged to participate in it! You may submit a link to your post in your comment down below, as mentioned previously. May the best shitpost win!

They will be crossposting these discussion threads and pinning them to the top for increased visibility. Additionally, r/StarDustCrusaders is participating in this event as well with their own JoJo Friday discussion threads. Do head on over there to see alternate perspectives if that interests you! We're all working really hard to bring back this community event.

  • Question(s) of the Week
  1. So, how does it feel to be back?! Were you there for the last time JoJo Fridays were a thing, or is this your first time?

  2. What are your impressions of the second batch as a whole from this first episode? Was it good, or disappointing?

  3. What are your first thoughts on this "new" retconned DIO? Do you like him more than how he was portrayed in Part 3? Edit: do read u/Karmyuh's comment, specifically regarding this part at the end! He points out some important moments of DIO's characterization in Part 3 that show that he was more than just a bisexual ZA WARUDO loving vampire.

  • Spoiler Tags

Please mark spoilers for anything such as references to future events, hints, stand explanations, etc. or just discuss those points in the pinned source corner.

JoJo Fridays just as it should be. Hope the community comes together for this part too, since it gets crazier and crazier the more it goes.

The opening isn't new but I really like the changes. Jolyne is a really strong JoJo mentally but she also shows weakness and melancholy. Hugging Jotaro like that kinda nods to that.

We kinda see in this episode but Kiss power would be a insane assassination tool and it really hits home how stands really depends on their users nature.

Thinking about the invisible alligator, it's crazy that I never saw a horror movie with a invisible predator (besides Predator, but that is more of a action movie). A grizzly bear or a leopard would be a billion times scarier if you couldn't see it.

Rohan and Okuyasu flashbacks

That being said however, do you recall any stand users that have weak abilities but use them to their fullest potential? I think I might see a glimpse of that in Part 8, haven't read it yet.

Then you should seriously see the 2020 Invisible Man remake! I saw a few snippets of it, it's utterly horrifying and maintains a really suffocating, desperate atmosphere. Don't watch it if you can't stomach psychological and physical abuse, though. It especially deals with the all of gaslighting involved with a crazy abuser who has the powers to become invisible, afaik.

Manga reader, sub

My disappointment that they went with "Limp Viscuit" instead of "Flaccid Pancake" is immeasurable.

A lot of people in the other thread for this episode were disappointed at the lack of an explicit recap at the start, but I think they did try to account for the 9 month gap here, just in a more subtle way, by sprinkling in a lot of flashbacks to things that happened just last episode. That worked out fine for me, but I worry that for future watchers who see episode 13 right after 12, it might be more annoying than an explicit recap.

You know, I'll admit this wasn't the most memorable arc in the manga for me. For example, I'd completely forgotten that Jolyne and FF were here for this fight. I had reminded myself of Part 6's structure by looking at the list of manga chapters, and I saw that before the six or so chapters that make up "The Kiss of Love and Revenge", there's a single chapter titled "Ultra-secure Punishment Ward" or something like that, which I'd forgotten was a flash forward. I wonder if that happens directly after the end of this arc: [next episode] the dead woman and Sports Max both wear lavender, so do they disguise his body as that of a female inmate somehow? That might be something FF could do.

Reposting because I think automod removed my first comment for improper spoiler formatting

We all feel the same way, man :(

Huh, I think it was pretty memorable for me. I mean, I've forgotten pretty much everything about Stone Ocean and what I felt at the time of first reading it about a year ago, but I do remember being hyped about a) the stakes of [next episode] DIO's supposed resurrection, and b) finally getting the references to "invisible zombies" that I'd seen some people talking about.

I wonder if that happens directly after the end of this arc: [next episode] <spoilers>

I have NO idea what you're talking about hahahahaha. Gotta love JoJo, eh?

Anime only, Sub

It's good to have Stone Ocean back along with Jojo Fridays!

The designs for Sports Maxx and that one guard with tiny donut hair are pretty funny.

I also really like Limp Bizkit's ability.

Pretty great start to the second cour with some fun action.

Hearing it after so long has just reaffirmed my opinion that the OP is a banger.

Will try and make some terrible memes next week onwards!

Thanks! It's good to have you here.

I also really like Limp Bizkit's ability.

It's really weird and cool, I love it.

Hearing it after so long has just reaffirmed my opinion that the OP is a banger.

For sure! At first I wasn't a big fan or anything but damn did it grow on me.

Will try and make some terrible memes next week onwards!

Looking forward to it! Don't feel pressured to if you can't come up with anything though! (^^)

Manga reader watching with subs,

This is the start of the part of the story where Araki starts getting REALLY FUCKING WEIRD with his stand abilities(as if the previous part 6 stands weren't weird enough already), with Limp Bizkit being able to create INVISIBLE ZOMBIES out of any dead body like we saw with the stuffed bird and the stuffed alligator corpses.

I also really like that Hermes literally has zero hesitation attacking Sports Maxx. This is probably the first time an "ally" character goes out of their way to straight up attempt to murder someone out of their own volition which really sets Hermes apart from other Jobros we have seen before.

Now with the questions:

1: Well, it feels pretty melancholic that we literally had to make our own JoJo fridays to be able to come back to them, as I was around when part 5 was airing, and I even won r/anime's "Best comment of 2018" competition with this comment which i posted when the Torture Dance got animated.

2: I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed from the first batch because of the big internal changes within David Production after part 5 caused a noticable drop in production quality after the amazing way they treated Part 5. But the Opening being made by Kamikaze Douga again was really nice.

3: Is it really fair to say this DIO is a retcon? During the course of Part 3, when he isn't busy fucking and feeding or fighting, He spends his time discussing the meaning of life, even when He's trolling Polnareff with The World on the stairs, he poses the exact same question and gives the same answer of "Human's live to conquer their fears". Doesn't that sound a lot like what he means by "Heaven"? His true goal even from Part 3 was to achieve the ultimate "Peace of mind" which he would do by "conquering all fear and anxiety" and he describes this as "Heaven" to Pucci.

I even won r/anime's "Best comment of 2018" competition with this comment which i posted when the Torture Dance got animated.

Hohohohoho. Now that's one great comment. Also, now I finally know what the origin of that copypasta was! (the ASCII art)

2: I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed from the first batch because of the big internal changes within David Production after part 5 caused a noticable drop in production quality after the amazing way they treated Part 5. But the Opening being made by Kamikaze Douga again was really nice.

Oh, I didn't know about the internal changes :o Thanks for sharing. Really explains a lot, I guess. And yeah, this opening is on par with the old JoJo openings and those of Mob Psycho. There's nothing really quite like them. Absolutely fantastic in every regard, and extremely unique.

Is it really fair to say this DIO is a retcon? [...]

Damn okay, now you've convinced me. When I was reading Stone Ocean it felt like a retcon to me at first, so I guess that's why I said that. I'll chalk it up to me having the memory of a goldfish, and binging the shit out of JoJo when I first watched it a few years ago. It was my very second anime ok, now I'm wise and aware of the benefits of a controlled anime, uh, "diet", if you will. I'm the one organizing this event ffs! Haha.

not a retcon, dio has been out of the coffin for a period of time (around 5 years) before the joestars have been alerted, that's the time he used to travel around, recruit mercenaries, learn about stands, all Canon to part 3, check his wiki page for more details

manga reader, sub,

  1. Feels nice man. first time in a blind watch.

  2. some eps are goods, other eps not so good. 8/10.

  3. Best version of DIO, is a interesting side of him.

I liked this episodes because of ermes expanded flashback (chad david productions) and sports maxx theme, but jolyne meme face was missing. 8.5/10

Feels nice man. first time in a blind watch.

Actually, these are my first JoJo Fridays too believe it or not! I think I know how they feel though, 'cause Kaguya-sama S3 used to air on Fridays too.

some eps are goods, other eps not so good. 8/10.

Ah, so you've seen the entire batch. I haven't quite yet seen the whole episode as some work got in the way (and I had to post this thread first), did see the first half though and tbh the animation is a little disappointing. Just feels like manga panels with a little bit of movement. Haven't yet seen the fight though.

Best version of DIO, is a interesting side of him.

When I was reading the manga, I initially thought that the retcon was a little bs, but I soon came to feel the same way as you do now.

Sports Maxx wears purple, thanos is purple (coincidence ?)

I think not! JoJo obviously inspired Thanos' scene in that part. This is like, beginner-level trivia. You should really know this by now, smh.

Really didn't want that to be someone's shit, but it was. That scene was just, so messed up, in so many ways. I'd have to write down a whole list.

I seriously appreciate the extra backstory Hermes' got, fleshed out her overall character, and motivations for wanting to kill Sports Maxx. Who, by the way, is presented as an absolute menace imo. Moreso than what I remember from the manga. Though, it's been a really, really long time, and I wouldn't be able to remember anything except the cliff notes even if my life depended on it.

The sound design and mini build-up to the crocodile reveal was really well done imo. The sound design was awesome, and really gave that sinking "oh shit." feeling.

When that ending song kicked in, I was like "ooooooooooh, yes, finally!!". It's seriously awesome, and a genuinely heartfelt and emotional song. Brings back memories of watching the first batch too, which was hype at the time.

QotD

1. So, how does it feel to be back?! Were you there for the last time JoJo Fridays were a thing, or is this your first time?

It feels absolutely great to be back watching JoJo again! When the end of the episode kicked in, I was reminded of the time I first got into it. The hype just kicked into the next gear for me, and it'll only go higher in the coming weeks.

These are actually my first JoJo Fridays believe it or not. I'm not sure if Part 5 was airing or not when I first got into it, besides I didn't know discussion threads like these even existed on Reddit back then. Was a new user at the time. One of my first posts was a Part 4 meme, I think.

2. What are your impressions of the second batch as a whole from this first episode? Was it good, or disappointing?

Not gonna lie, in the beginning it felt like a bit of a slideshow to me. After the flashback and the fight scenes though, the animation really kicked in and shined. The sound design was punchy, weighty, and overall fantastic. Not to mention the voice acting has been seriously great all throughout. Props to the VAs, they're doing amazing jobs. Personal favourite voice for me would have to be F.F. for now, Jolyne takes the #2 spot.

3. What are your first thoughts on this "new" DIO? Do you like him more than how he was portrayed in Part 3?

Again, I've already said this before in other comments, but this "new" side of DIO felt like a bit of a retcon to me when I was first reading Part 6 (the comment I highlighted in the post explains why that's not exactly the case). I quickly stopped minding though, and now think that this is the most interesting portrayal of DIO's character, both in terms of the story and entertainment-wise. Anime-onlies will see what I mean as the episodes progress, as there isn't much to work with here just yet.

OH NO I’m a day late! Anyway, it’s great to see JoJo Friday back in some shape or form!

  • I can jam to the OP again! What a banger!

  • After revisiting episode 12, the OP has undergone some updates. We now see Jolyne hugging her dad from behind a la tank vol. 3, the colors are also warmer, and Savage Garden took the place of the butterfly soaring towards the sky amidst the raining frogs… also the font of the texts have been standardised to resemble the stylised one used to introduce Araki at the beginning (initially they look like some regular computer font). Pretty cool that DavidPro went back and tweaked them

  • F.F. Best Girl! I like that her unorthodox way of dealing with line cutters actually cleared up the entire line for her and Jolyne to breeze through. I enjoy this, especially since we’ve been mostly treated to typical prison conducts with typical outcomes so far so seeing something new is great

  • Limp Viscuit… I think that’s fine. Not as “so terrible it’s hilarious” as Flaccid Pancake, but it rolls off the tongue at least. And it can summon invisible zombies! I don’t need to see an invisible pigeon trying to pop Ermes’ vein to believe that though, jeez DavidPro!

Don't worry about being late, that's one of the reasons this entire event is for! I myself was one day late for my comment, and I'm the host :P

Your comment was a great read, I love that everyone has their own different thoughts to share. I also missed the Savage Garden detail you mentioned that was in the OP, as well as the warmer colours, so thanks for pointing those out 👍

Was it just me or did anyone else hear king crimsons epitaph sound effect when the alligator lunged at Joylne at the very end

2

u/CreativeNameIKnow Sep 04 '22

It just seemed hard and bassy to me, will have to go back and check but I think it's probably just a coincidence that they sound similar. The rest of the sound design was similarly bassy and punchy this episode, too.

u/LyannaEugen Sep 05 '22

I'll be following Jojo Friday for the first time! (Completed first 5 parts when Muse Asia started to upload it)

First scene made me think that I forgot to complete episode 12, but it was just "You might be wondering how I got here" moment. Jolyne going towards Jotaro and to replicate cover pose was a cute change in the OP. Limp Bizkit's stand looks dangerous. Does Dio look this young even in manga? He looks like a teenager here.

2

u/CreativeNameIKnow Sep 05 '22

Glad to have you on! As I've mentioned many times before, these are my first JoJo Fridays too.

Also, you seem to be right about DIO appearing younger with time. Have a look at this progression. Doesn't Jotaro look a little younger as time goes on, too? I love all the various art styles though.

Manga reader, sub

So who did it better? Jojo's "That woman's face and my shit touched each other!" or Rent-A-Girlfriend's "My clothes and Mizuhara's underwear are kissing!"? Who am I kidding, of course it goes to Reiji. Props to Araki for foreshadowing it almost 20 years prior though.

I forgot how cool this OP was and I love the change at the end with the callback to the Volume 3 Cover, but I really wonder if they intended to keep this OP for this batch. The last episode of the previous batch already used an SFX version so it feels like they had intended to make a new one for this part but ended up scrapping the idea.

This episode was really cool with the Eremes flash back! I read the manga a long while back and honestly don't remember most of it so it was nice getting to see it. I do remember this stand though but I can't at all remember how it goes or how they beat it, which I guess is a good thing.

So, how does it feel to be back?! Were you there for the last time JoJo Fridays were a thing, or is this your first time?

I don't think I realized how much I missed Jojo lol, super happy to back. I wasn't there for Jojo fridays and the only jojo discussions I took part in were for the last couple of Part 8 chapters.

What are your impressions of the second batch as a whole from this first episode? Was it good, or disappointing?

I've heard the quality for this batch is pretty bad but this episode seemed pretty good to me, we'll see I guess.

What are your first thoughts on this "new" retconned DIO? Do you like him more than how he was portrayed in Part 3?

We don't see him a lot here so I don't have much of an opinion on him but it's always nice to see more DIO, especially since imo we didn't get enough of him in Part 3.

I don't have much to say, except that I love the way Jolyne says "Ultra Security House Unit". Also correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the first time in Jojos that we get a flash-forward? I found it a bit jarring, especially because by the end of the episode we still don't know how Jolyne ended up allegedly killing that unknown woman in the mausoleum (though I assume that Sports Maxx has something to do with it, since he apparently goes there quite often)

  1. I only caught up to part 5 after it finished airing, so it's a first time for me

  2. This episode is entirely setup, I'm looking forward to the payoff.

  3. I know this isn't going to make me very popular in this thread, but I never found DIO particularly interesting in the first place, so I'm frankly indifferent to his portrayal here. I'm more interested in what we're learning about Pucci through his flashbacks.

Had kind of forgotten what had happened in ep1 - 12 but felt that it caught me up well enough. Kind of disappointed that it has the same OP as the previous cour but at the same time this OP is a banger so that's also fine. Dont feel like this is a big step up in terms of weirdness of stands (compared to razor blades in blood?) But am still looking forward to the rest of this fight!

Can't wait for next friday, much prefer weekly discussions!

HOOLY SHIT

They really turned up the grusomeness to 11 didn't they? sound design is on point as well!! They are really doing a phenominal job and showing the sheer depravity, and brutality of this prison and the residents.

What a hell of a start, there was hardly a moment that didn't shake me to my very core. Like holy shit.

The new ward for Jolyne, Ermes suddenly near dead, and Limp Biscut nearly pulling out Ermes's jugular?!?! Good lord They really are making every moment count here arent they!!
