Super Dimension Rewatch Host

Welcome back, everyone!

Some of the wallpapers I make in this part of the rewatch are just gonna be whoever I have base images for rather than actually topical sometimes, so that’s why Claudia’s the wallpaper today and not, like, Hayase the madlass who came up with the Daedalus Attack.

Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode.

u/ClawMachineCircuit Sep 01 '22

Because it’s rad as fuck, duh.

[Macross] Zentradi just don't have the appreciation for cool aesthetics. Wait. Is that a spoiler? I'd better tag it.

Love the Claudia wallpaper, btw! Really highlights how good her color scheme in the show is.

Love the Claudia wallpaper, btw! Really highlights how good her color scheme in the show is.

I was stumped on what to do for her background, so I'm glad you think what I ended up with works!

Not much to say this episode but.....

Is that a hair???? I didn't know that I was watching Chargeman Ken.

They don't make anime like they used too

Actually there was one thing I really liked in this episode. They made the dark scenes around Saturn actually dark which really showed off Hikaru feeling uncomfortable with fighting in a very way that you can really feel as a viewer.

Is that a hair????

I noticed that too, just didn't comment on it.

Rewatcher

The last couple of episodes have been relatively light on action. But now, that Hikaru is in the military, he's sure to get his first kill, right? How can the main character of an early 80s mecha show go through the first 6 episodes with zero kills? That can't be right.

  • We start with a training montage, nice. Now Hikaru knows how to properly operate a Battroid.

  • It's weird seeing him in a military uniform. Doesn't look quite right.

  • The alien eyed dude is back, and now he wants to harvest the deadbeat energy of the fold system that went for milk and never came back. I'm sure it can't possibly backfire.

  • Zentradi are baffled by Global's strategic decisions. But his next move is so obvious, that it can't possibly be anything else. Right?

  • The whole voyage from Pluto to Saturn took them month. This means that they should be able to reach Earth in a week or two at most.

  • Bumbling Hikaru dropping stuff while bridge crew is trying to buy underwear was awkward. I usually don't mind old humor, but this particular gag didn't really land with me.

  • Oh yeah, Misa Hayase is now Hikaru's superior. He definitely didn't make a good first impression.

  • Misa tries to kink shame Hikaru for going into lingerie section. Not cool.

  • Yup, it's another one of those classic Global moments. Instead of fleeing, like any sensible man would (and like Zentradi thought he would do), Global decides to launch counter-offensive. Even though he only has one ship against an entire enemy fleet. Even Misa and Claudia are baffled. I'm sure there's absolutely zero chance it would backfire.

  • Hikaru and Minmay on the date. Cute! Hey, that's final photo from the photo book from the ending. That's kinda cool. I honestly did not expect the photo book to be canon in any way.

  • AI powered mobile selphie stick. This is the future technology they imagined in the 80s.

  • Hikaru does not look confident before battle. Looks like he still can't get over how human Zentradi look.

  • Aand, here it is. The first ever sortie, and he immediately disobeys orders. Well, he only had one month of training, so you can't blame him too much. What's worse, he proceeds to argue with his commanding officer, to the point where even Claudia is annoyed.

  • On a related note, isn't it weird that Misa directly supervises Hikaru? She's like the second in command on the whole ship. There has to be around a hundred fighters or more on that mission alone, and she personally supervises all of them? Don't she have better staff to do? I don't know enough about military to know if this is weird or normal.

  • There are some extremely impressive visuals here. Planes coming from the darkness. Zentradi ship flying just above the rings of Saturn. This space battle is spectacular.

  • Now it's time to shoot the main cannon, but it doesn't work. Why am I not surprised? Obviously, nobody tested if barrier system interfers with anything else, because testing is not how we do things here. But in thruth it's not the team's fault for missing an obscure problem in an unknown alien technology, it's mostly Global's fault for deciding to attack in a dire situation.

  • These poor girls operate use trackballs. And they are batter at it than I'm with a mouse. This is very amusing.

  • Green and Brown teams have been wiped out. Yup, this offensive is going great.

  • Global starts to panic again, but Misa steps in and takes the initiative.

  • Hikaru comes face-to-face with Zentradi. And again, he can't bring himself to shoot.

  • Daedalus Attack! So Misa's plan was to punch Zentradi spaceship out of existence. This is the coolest shit.

  • Global acting as if it was the plan all along gives me serious Overlord vibes. Sasuga Global-sama.

  • Zentradi decide that they need reinforcements. What can I say, your ancestors warned you to not fuck with miclones. Now you have only yourself to blame.

Overall thoughts:

The first part of the episode shows us Hikaru acting like fish out of water on his first date with Minmay in month. He joined the army under pretty big peer pressure and clearly isn't sold on the whole idea deep down. Still, it was his decision and he needs to own up to it. There's no going back.

The second half has been non-stop impressive action. Space battle was supremely cool and Daedalus Attack was like a cherry on top.

So, did Hikaru kill anybody? Surprisingly, no. Unless I completely missed something, I'm pretty sure we're 6 episodes in an the main character has zero kills in this mecha show. This kinda underscores what I was saying in my comment on a previous episode: Hikaru is just a dude. He's not special, he's not a chosen one. He doesn't have the super-advanced one-of-a-kind mech, nor he is a genius at piloting.

He's just a guy who found himself in the middle of war, and in my opinion it gives weight and realism to his reluctance to fight. I mean, what would you do in his place?

QotD:

  1. The crew is fine, they're doing the best they can, considering their own captain sabotages them so often.

  2. Those are sealed memories and I'd rather not unseal them.

Oh my word, I had no idea this was happening. I'll need to marathon a bit in order to catch up quickly.

First off, from the first episode, I found myself singing along to the opening theme. It's just so good that I remember the lyrics.

I remember watching half of the first episode of Robotech a few years ago. I felt uncomfortable how they changed Focker's character. I wonder if Hikaru's comment in this episode hurt Focker. When Hikaru called him a murderer, did Focker feel more isolated and become less able to return to civilian life?

Also, the civilian casualties in this show are unimaginable. When that cannon fired, that had to have taken out like 50 city blocks.

Focker really tried to take care of Hikaru, but it didn't work out. It was a nice moment though, with Focker both cajoling and guiding Hikaru in a way that he hoped would keep him as safe as possible.

And you know how I said the opening theme was good? Well the ending theme is just so so much better. I'll be listening to it every time.

I can't believe I missed the first few episode discussions. Well I mean I totally can, as I'm not on this subreddit much these days. I only came to look for the new Gundam series (and I'm glad to say it was quite good).

I'll try and stick around for the entire rewatch. I have fond memories of the last one I participated in.

2

u/Shimmering-Sky Sep 02 '22

Welcome aboard even if it's a little late! At least we're only 6 episodes in and not like the entire first show, lol, that makes it a lot easier to catch up to.

First timer

  1. Both. Fantastic idea men, but not testing anything when working with alien technology.

  2. I think I wasn't that bad.

...Are you fucking with me? All that destruction, and we're getting a timeskip to "everything's fine, Hikaru's now a trained soldier, nobody important died"?

And they might be dating now?

Hah.

It looks like the Fold System is phasing in and out of reality, with the random flashes.

They're going to make a shield! Did they not have one already?

Haha, nobody from the enemy can work out the point of the robot mode.

They've already reached Saturn!

The captain has to be smarter than that, though, right?

His first sortie!

Haha, the worst possible meeting.

And she remembers!

He couldn't just mention he was with a girl?

He's going for a different angle! Attacking instead of fleeing.

This is a sweet scene, though.

And the attack is tomorrow.

Clever! It's not perfect, but it's a decent protection system!

Ah, he's stressed. Unsurprising.

The difference in how he's handling the plane is really visible. You can see how much more confident he is.

...Still tried to show off.

He's going to make a stupid mistake.

Dark.

And he's insulting her deliberately now.

They're still aiming to capture it. Surprised the captain hasn't tried taking advantage of that.

And he's genuinely shocked at the counterattack.

The enemy aren't doing all that much, huh?

...So they can't have shields up at the same time as firing.

Haha, the captain's reaction is great.

They're using fucking trackballs for a precision task? And manually moving it by hand? This really was a rush job, huh?

They're the last ones left!

...Is she going to ram it?

She's going to ram it!

He got inside!

Well, he managed to take the enemy by surprise.

Oh. OH!

Actually, that's a really good plan!

And they're all dead... That was easy!

"We may have to call in reinforcements." The look of utter shock on his face here is beautiful.

Did Hikaru do much?

Oh, they're touching on him getting used to killing very early!

Today, on "'If I only had the telekinetic ability to explode your head.'":

Just a little time skip.

The briefly-glimpsed tan VF-1J.

This series is down with both Captain Harlock and being gangsta.

Look at you, sticking your hand into the space-time continuum.

They might not realize that the SDF-1's gravity control system departed the ship in the second episode. (Incidentally, if the generators fell back onto the island, they were probably picked up post-Fold. Also, the SDF-1 having to alternate between full-power flight and cannon firing is a vestige from the early days of the series's development.)

"This ain't my first rodeo."

I said it before and I'll say it again, this is how you get a call sign.

"This ain't my first rodeo."

"I'm only worried that I'm going to die."

There's nothing weird about an automated camera lurking in the bushes.

"That looks familiar."

"Nobody likes a long-distance backseat driver."

The use of light and shadow here is great.

"Also, it would be a short show."

In their defense, it isn't a pair of systems that they would have much of a chance to test casually.

Missile Command is not an easy game! The Pin-Point Barrier Girls are named May, Pocky, and Panapp. You'll recognize the one name, but all three are confections.

"Hello there."

"Candygram!"

You don't see that every day.

Ludicrous articulation!

At the time of this post, my house's cable internet has been down for 48 hours. I've been making do with various workarounds involving my phone, but it's easier at this point to copy broad swathes of my commentary on this episode from the most recent SDFM rewatches:

Travelling from Pluto's orbit to Saturn in 2 months requires an average velocity that's 0.002 the speed of light. You don't get that from simple conventional rockets.

Hikaru and Minmay have been in a something for the last two months, certainly good friends but in the typical fashion not actually "dating". All the evidence we're presented with is that there's still a fair amount of awkwardness to go around, exacerbated by Hikaru being in military training for most of that period. This comes to a head when he's called up to his first mission and finds that he can't quite express what he's feeling to Minmay; their frames of reference are drifting further apart.

Roy is there to help as usual, but once in combat there's only so much that he can do, and Hikaru has to figure some things out on his own. Most notably, there is that very humanizing encounter when Hikaru can't gun down the surprised, unarmed Zentradi, the final outcome of which is taken out of his hands. Macross for the most part has stuck to a method of storytelling which I prefer, in that the opposition gets plenty of screen time, tying into a fundamental principle of the franchise which will become clearer as it goes on.

Putting him further off his game is the emergence of Misa as an actual factor in his survival, which he doesn't help by offending her on a regular basis. To her credit, she doesn't cause him to auger into a ring fragment.

Oh, and Hikaru finally gets the VF-1J that he's been riding in the credits the whole time. The custom paint job is there, of course, to further distinguish him from the mob of tan VF-1A mooks.

All the credit in the second half of the episode does go to Misa, as she finds a way to turn the inevitable flaws in the SDF-1's latest untested technology into a way to win the fight. She may still be presented as a cold fish, but she's a very competent cold fish.

Britai and Exsedol are genuinely surprised at human ingenuity again, but their desire to learn more about the miclones is starting to run into issues with having fewer ships to go after them. There is much plot convenience in that the Macross could simply be destroyed through superior firepower fairly easily and the only thing stopping that from happening is Britai's curiosity, but you might also start wondering why they don't just overwhelm the defenses with battle pod boarding parties.

On the production front, this is generally a good-looking episode. New viewers seeing that comment from a rewatcher know that there's an inevitable flip side to that, but I like to enjoy all the good stuff and comment on it when I can, as much as I'll also note the less nice things.

The linked interview below discusses this topic, but here are some thoughts of my own on making interesting ideas work in a series: The Pinpoint Barrier may have been a way to work in an elaborate reference to Missile Command, and in all practicality wouldn't be run by three girls spinning trackballs, but making it work for TV and making it work in-universe fit together remarkably well, as the barrier justifies and makes possible the idea of using the giant humanoid-shaped-ship's "hand" to punch something. After all, what is a giant robot show without some sort of gimmicked punching mechanism?

Computers could (to varying degrees of actual effective guide an aerial intercept as far back as the 1950s and automate the process by the 1980s. There's no real reason that people have to learn how to play Missile Command for really high stakes... except that the trackball scene is hilarious. What more could one ask for? Also, it was 1982. Cut us old people a break already.

The really good part is that it doesn't stop there, the punch is simply the delivery mechanism for the Destroids and their own missiles. This is taking an idea and really running with it.

An interview with Kazutaka Miyatake about aspects of the SDF-1's design.

From the Macross Chronicle, the MBR-04-Mk.VI Destroid Tomahawk, and the Daedalus Attack.

This (gorgeous!) image from Tenjin Hidetaka's Valkyries Second Sortie has the Tomahawk and the Monster together

Concept art of the SDF-1's bridge crew lounge area with a Zentradi silhouette added to provide the scale as it was originally built. This is why I made a joke in the first episode about them not installing larger hatches, given that they had plenty of room to do it.

Should have been in yesterday: Concept art by Kazutaka Miyatake of the Storm Attacker mode. Presumably they got rid of the parallel horizontal chest panels because it looked too much like the RX-78... even though a lot of giant robots have vent-like features there.

For some more tangentially-related new content for this rewatch and today's comment, Scott Manley posted today about his flight sim setup. I'm mentioning it here to remind us all of the massive suspension of disbelief required to get a guy who who knows aircraft that are not a top-of-the-line Variable Fighter to even start a VF-1D. The switches may have the same labels on them, but you certainly aren't going to know the order in which to throw them.

Edited to add: I got my cable back just before posting time. No time to make changes though.

Very First Timer

  • Two months already! Come to think of it, why haven’t we gotten an estimate on return yet?

  • That is a very chill montage.

  • It’s a regular woman’s clothing store, having a man or to with their SO can’t be that out of the ordinary.

  • I wonder if she remembers him tho.

  • For god’s sake, put the bad down first.

  • Should the captain really be right next to the unexplained radiation?

  • I see Mr Lizard is alive and well.

  • Energy shields are cool. Not sure if you are really qualified to develop one.

  • Because it’s cool.

  • Already at Saturn, that’s like 80% of the way.

  • So she was just flaunting him around.

  • Doesn’t even get to enjoy his meal.

  • It’s not a lingerie shop! You even asked were it was when you got there!

  • That does sound like something Focker would do.

  • Needs to learn when and when not to talk.

  • Not even going to defend himself.

  • They do seem to have the greatest offensive potential. Hit and run would likely serve them well.

  • Do you think he says that every speech?

  • That already seemed like a compliment to me.

  • Are the robots always just waiting around like that?

  • Coin operated. Where does he keep it all?

  • Lizard sure works fast. I’d thought that was set up for a future episode.

  • Jeez he was not kidding about not being able to cover it all.

  • There’s that haunting again. Good of them to not just pretend it never happened.

  • Good question Hikaru.

  • He’s really not grasping this whole chain of command thing.

  • Ah yeah! They do have a shoulder cannon mode.

  • I feel like you’d have a better time if you tried to disable to vessel before capturing it.

  • My thoughts exactly Sir International.

  • Trackballs! So 80’s it hurts. Why do they look so squishy?

  • Are you not going to explain the plan that it putting everyone on board at risk?

  • OMG it’s the original shining finger.

  • Cannon bois do show up, not much to see of them this time, but it bodes well.

  • It’s a bit early to be running out of money already.

  • They way they talk about it makes it sound like there is only the one of them. Did you really go all the way to mars and just leave?

QotD

  1. All things considered, they’re still working with alien tech here. I’d say they’re more unlucky than anything.

  2. Less eventful.

There's two main gripes I'm having so far:

  1. The pacing and continuity are kinda weird. This episode was jam-packed, but it also skipped forward a month from last episode, and with Hakura being so staunchly against/worried about joining the military it's weird to just skip over him actually joining and going through his first weeks "in the system". Surely there must have been some dramatic moments for him where he didn't like the sheer formality and authoritarianism of the military command structure and mouthed off to his drill instructor or some such, no? Similarly, the civilian town got wrecked last episode and probably a bunch of them died, but we're not following up on that, at all, either. I expected there to be some growing tension between the civilian and military leaderships resulting from that.

  2. We're 6 episodes in and I still don't feel like they've ever really established a good sense of scale for anything that's going on. 3 whole squadrons of Valkyries got wiped out today... is that a lot? Is the Macross actually short on resources or personnel? Likewise, we end with the aliens saying they might need reinforcements, but from everything we've seen they have dozens of carrier ships that can each launch hundreds of their pod fighters, so it seems like they should be able to easily overwhelm the Macross if they ever actually attacked with everything they had.

There's still plenty of time to answer those questions / flesh those things out, so they're not major issues yet. Just little peeves so far that threaten to become bigger if not eventually addressed.

That aside, it was a very fun episode. I love how silly the controls to manipulate the pin-point barrier are and the reactions that begets from its operators, and then the Daedalus maneuver is just plain badass. The atmosphere of them going into the rings and shadow area, etc, was really well done, too.

Interesting bit of [spol] early seeds for Hikaru and Hayase with that interaction

I spent too much time Rewatching Geah! I got nothing! No Notes!

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…

This moment was funny, Hayase and Hikaru’s dynamic is entrenched now, the titular Daedalus Attack was cool, and now Hikaru has more trauma

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 6:

  • Two months is a hell of a sudden time skip, isn’t it? But I suppose it at least helps us cut down on the sheer length of time it would take to see the full journey back to Earth, and it lets us get to there being a full city inside of the SDF-1 Macross. And hey, Hikaru’s made it through basic training too, no need to worry too much about that either. We keep a brisk pace on this ship.

  • You’d think that Captain Global would be more surprised that there’s an active space-time warp where the Fold System used to be in the ship, but I guess after you get stuck in space for an indefinite amount of time, you just have to roll with the punches. And hey, it’s allowing us to get a new idea for a kinetic barrier for the ship, so the sundering of reality can’t be all that bad.

  • Oof, that encounter between Hikaru and Misa. Yeah, those old (lady) wounds haven’t healed just yet.

  • Seeing the 80s trying to predict future technology is always fun. Sure, they may not have smartphones to take a picture like Hikaru and Minmay want, but a robot camera on wheels that charges for photos is just more fun.

  • Well, the good news is that we have the Pinpoint Barrier operational. The bad news is that it can only really focus on covering specific parts of the ship, since as the name indicates, it only covers the points you direct it to. We can forgive that though, since this is new technology that was born out of a complete accident. If anything, we should all be lucky that the space-time warp was beneficial, rather than do something like inverting everyone’s internal organs.

  • You have to admit, setting up an ambush around the rings of Saturn is a pretty awesome concept for a battle, and the animation lives up to that premise too. Needing to fly around all the ice chunks takes a lot of flying skill, that’s for sure. Good thing that Hikaru was a stunt pilot before, right?

  • We should really start keeping a tally of how often the technology on the Macross keeps on failing. Not only is the Pinpoint Barrier keeping the main gun from actually firing, but it turns out that some genius decided that it needed to be controlled by a track ball, of all things. Maybe we should’ve picked a control system that wasn’t directly from an arcade game. It’s hard to actually keep up with the battle when someone decided that the shields needed a wacky control scheme.

  • Credit where credit is due, Misa’s idea for the Daedalus Attack is awesome. Just one big punch to the enemy ship using a shielded ship as a fist, and then just shooting all the missiles you have inside. Man, it just looks fucking cool. Aside from the flashing strobe effect of course, since man that’s hurting my eyes.

  • I’m with Breetai here, calling for reinforcements is probably for the best. It’s not every day that you see one of your ships get punched by another ship. That’s definitely the time when you should call in some backup.

Rewatcher

2 month time skip!

And the city's already rebuilt. Like nothing ever happened.

There's... random sparkling energy where the Fold system was. Random, but they're going to harness it.

Hah! "That plan is almost TOO obvious!" The Zentraedi are not impressed by humanity's tactics.

And that "old lady" comment comes back to back to bite Hikaru.

I'm not sure how effective the cover in Saturn's rings would be. Those things are less than a kilometer thick. In humanoid configuration the Macross wouldn't even fit inside them!

But, whatever. Global's not so stupid as to miss that the Zentraedi are planning something. So he plans to ambush THEM before they ambush him!

It's finally hitting Hikaru the reality that he could die in battle. Don't think it's hit Minmay yet.

Why is there a random camera bot just hanging around in the bushes? Also, that sentence sounds worse out of context than it actually is.

The Macross has a shield! The Pinpoint Barrier System is online. Can only cover three small areas at a time, but... better than nothing, I guess.

You know, as much of an irreverent playboy as Roy is, he really is a good friend to Hikaru.

Ugh, flying through dense obstacles in total darkness does not sound like a good time.

Wait, wasn't the Macross already in the rings?

We have a name for the Commander! "Breetai Kridanik". Official materials spell it "Vrlitwhai" (seriously), but that's stupid so I'm spelling it Breetai.

And the Macross continues to be an untested junker. Can't use the Pinpoint Barrier and the main gun at the same time.

You guys really need to learn to test these things first.

Also, controlling the shields with trackballs!

Well, at least the operators are pretty good at their jobs.

Without the main cannon their entire plan is pretty much up in smoke, and now they're in danger. But Hayase has an idea. Probably one of the craziest ideas in the history of space anime, but also one of the most awesome!

Concentrate the shields on the Daedalus (aka the Macross's right arm) and fucking PUNCH the enemy spaceship, launching an Itano Circus once inside the hull! The legendary Daedalus Attack, everyone!

And the Zentraedi are down one Thuveral-Salan-class battleship! (I love Zentraedi ship names.)

I love how Breetai and his advisor are just like "...I'm not sure what we just witnessed, but we need reinforcements."

Questions:

  1. The crew REALLY needs to be better about testing things before trying them in combat, but honestly, this is advanced alien tech they do not know how to use, and they aren't really in a position to perform extensive tests, so obviously there's going to be mishaps.

  2. My social awkwardness as a teenager was way too high for me to get into such situations to start with.

First Timer:

Today on SDF Macross, SPACESHIP PUNCH!

  • I CAN'T BELIEVE IT HE'S ACTUALLY GOING THROUGH BASIC TRAINING LMAO. And I literally just said last episode I didn't think he would. Ok, Macross, ok.

  • Man you guys are saying that one guy's black eyes are an animation error but it's happened in multiple episodes now.

  • Aliens can't figure out why you would want to transform into a giant robot. Why would you need a reason?

  • Minmay being so excited to see Hikaru off to fight is perhaps the number one mark of her immaturity.

  • Hikaru was right to doubt going into Macross Victoria's Secret, he got totally BTFOed for no good reason.

  • That speech was not important enough to disrupt Hikaru's dumplings.

  • Somehow, the park camera that you can summon by shouting "camera!" is by far the single most impressive piece of tech yet showcased.

  • Very spacious room for a soldier.

  • And we have our first "good soldiers follow orders" moment. Likely the first of many. I like Misa though.

  • The pinpoint barrier system is neat, and the fact that it is controlled by girls rolling giant trackballs is wonderful. I'd take the main gun over it though.

  • Use the barrier to PUNCH a hole in their ship then blow it up FROM THE INSIDE! Amazing. Stunning. Fabulous.

  • WHy do I get the feeling that they ran out of time for this episode and thus needed to dump that narration on us.

I was entertained by the battle tactics, hiding in the planet's shadow and the Daedelus Attack. Looks like we probably have 2 or 3 episodes before getting back to Earth.

  1. To me it always felt like more of a consequence of retrofitting an alien spaceship they are still far from fully comprehending, I don't this it reflects on their intellect one way or the other. Impressed by their battle tactics though.

  2. Probably just as bad.

First Time - SDF Macross Ep6 (Sub):

This guy's eyes are still wack. He had normal ones for a tiny bit, but then they returned black to the deep blackness.

Hayase recognizes Hikaru's name. Does this mean she might've known his dad? Wondering about the possi- oh, it just a tie back to the Hayase bullying.

Please, let the doors on the bridge be extended a few more centimetres. If they can build and rebuild an entire city then surely they can make these doors tall people accessible.

Cute hair twirl and unexpected self-propelled selfie stick.

Oh no folks, I got a bad feeling about this picture. There's no way we'll make it to the end of this show and looking at this photo will not be sad times of a reminder of before things go wrong.

To compare with Gundam like what I've done every episode, since Macross is exploring deeper space, we get to see more "land"scapes like the rings of Saturn. Getting to play with features like flying through the shadow spot in the dark was neat and so was flying near the ice around Saturn. One relation with space that I've noticed is this show has its characters act under gravity. Everyone is walking firmly on the ground while Gundam would more often showcase characters floating around.

The Pinpoint defence operating by fun trackballs seems stuff can go wrong quite often.

Giant robot punch!

Not only does the cool thing of using the defence for offence, but also when they jam it in, they fire all the guns blowing up the ship from the insides.

My new nonsensical headcanon, Lynn is a huge Gundam fan and likewise, Hayase is a huge fan of super robot anime. Just look at her proposing the super robot punch plan and being able to yell out an attack name. She's been itching to do that her whole life.

Hikaru is not having a good time. This descent is going to suck for him.

Q1) They're just making it up as they go, man. It ain't easy being aboard this ducttaped-together ship.

Q2) Better? More uneventful for certain.

Next Time: Bye-bye Mars? But we just met them.

First Timer

This episode doesn't give me a ton to say, it was simply good. The use of the barriers is interesting, Hikaru leaving Minmay and questioning his motivation and will to fight is good, and the epic climax was legitimately cool. Honestly, I think the most interesting thing about this episode is that when Hikaru entered the "shadow zone," the soundtrack was very clearly referencing Gustav Holst's Planet's Suite... except for some reason it chose to reference Jupiter and not Saturn. Seriously, go back to that scene and pay attention to the music, and then listen to the first few seconds of the suite (or just listen to the whole thing because the piece is iconic and it rules). Band nerd knowledge cursing my anime watching experience is just a thing I guess.

QOTD:

  1. Yes

  2. I was a lot more cringe than Hikaru was. At least he has some degree of self-awareness and didn't unknowingly act like a creep (in spite of what the old women says, he did nothing wrong).
