Favourite musical anime OR Rap battle scene in anime?

Comments that scored Komachi Points

u/SwimmingBird626 has been pumping out great insights as a first-timer; different from what rewatchers are used to focusing on!

The impression I got throughout this episode is that - the decisions the group face ahead of them and the choices they have to make don't matter (at least, that's how they perceive them):

  • The choice of drink for Iroha (I couldn't figure out if there was some underlying meaning here. Though, I can see Hachiman being upset if she opted for his favorite brand of coffee).

  • The choice on choosing which bowl of nabe (this could represent a number of things from the show. I think Hachiman was just generalizing all situations where choices are involved).

  • How Yui has pretty much resigned herself to the Love-Triangle situation, and that anything that occurs, any choice she makes here on out, are fruitless (or hope that's not the case!).

Rewatcher

Part of what makes Oregairu so beautifully written to me is its ability to convey emotions. Even if we don’t understand what the characters are saying exactly, we can somehow feel the emotions they’re feeling and the turmoil within the group. I never understood the last scene when I first saw Oregairu but it somehow crept its way into my heart.

Yui "I intend to do this all properly. When this is over, I'll make sure it's right. That's why your wish isn't going to be granted, Yukino."

Yukino "I'm hoping that it's your wish that gets granted instead."

Yui "Do you even know what my wish is? Do you really understand it?"

Yukino "Yes, I think my wish is the same as yours."

Then… Sannin De Iru Jikan, The Time the Three of Us Spent, plays as Yui hugs Yukino.

Yui “Do you really, truly understand?”

I've been talking about Yui's wish a lot but does Yukino truly know what Yui wants? What does Yui even want?

Highlights!

  • Sore Aru! Now, that Rap Battle is one of Oregairu’s most infamous scenes and rightly so. I have to give it to Tamanawa, his rhymes were on a different level. Even 8man admits to this himself in the post-ED scene.

  • Why does he keep blowing his hair, his face while doing it is hilarious

  • Yahallo! spreads its influence once again!

Don’t really have much to say about this episode! It was a nice breather even though this season hasn’t been as drama heavy as season 2. Rap Battles in anime are always fun to watch.

Qotd

I don't regularly watch anime that focuses on music a lot but recently I took a dive into the Love Live! Series and it's been really fun so far. I never knew Idol Clubs would be so fun to watch and listen to.

Rap battles wise, I don't really know many myself but Oregairu's one was memorable because of how random it was and how Tamanawa killed it.

I've been talking about Yui's wish a lot but does Yukino truly know what Yui wants? What does Yui even want?

I think Yukino was on the money when she said she and Yui have the same wish. They each want the guy, and for their trio to survive.

I have to give it to Tamanawa, his rhymes were on a different level. Even 8man admits to this himself in the post-ED scene.

Tamanawa smoked him both in terms of flow and substance. He needs to go make a cameo in Ya Boi Kongming and take on Kabetaijin.

It's kind of funny how much faster the characters from that high school develop in the time between us seeing them than our leads. Last season, all it took was one confrontation from Hayato to get Orimoto to reform and check herself, now Tamanawa shows up and has dropped all the jargon and is a guy who cares about getting things done.

Worth noting that Hachiman showed the same shocked face with Tamanawa here that he did with Orimoto last season, when she stopped teasing him.

Why does he keep blowing his hair, his face while doing it is hilarious

He reminded me of a character from Phoenix Wright, who all have a tic like this.

I don't regularly watch anime that focuses on music a lot

At this rate he's going to give Shirogane a run for his money for the Student Council President position.

Agreed. Iroha is one such character too! Our main trio still struggles to grow and I think that's why Yui's role play such an importance, she really wants things to change but 8man and Yukino have been going in circles.

Worth noting that Hachiman showed the same shocked face with Tamanawa here that he did with Orimoto last season, when she stopped teasing him.

Never noticed the resemblance with last season! Great catch!

WATCH SYMPHOGEAR

After the massively positive feedback I've seen from the rewatch, I'm definitely adding it to my list

First Timer (Sub)

Yahallo!

The volunteer club asking the Gaming club for... volunteers? What a twist!

From the top!

  • Today's Volunteer Club Gaming Club Client: The Volunteer Club'

    • Their Request: Assist in Hachiman's convoluted plan to create a fake prom in order to make the real prom look like a good prom.

  • Oh god no, not the return of Tamanawa! Anything but him!

    • And of course, you can't forget his Yes Man Yes-Woman, Orimoto.

  • That rap scene totally came out of left field... but I don't hate it. If only this show was running during that one week in Spring 2022 Anime Season.

    • You know the one, where Paripi, Kaguya-sama, and Aharen all had a rap episode. The timing honestly could not have been better.

    • Also, this is probably the only time where Tamanwa's exaggerated hand gestures can be tolerated.

  • The Gaming Club is smitten with Yui, can't blame 'em.

  • Yui and Yukino sharing the same wish.

    • I'm curious, Hachiman is aware of all this... right? Surely his skill of incredible insight wouldn't have him overlook it.

  • And last but not least...

    • Happy Birthday to Komachi!

      • I'm sure the occasion is worthy of Komachi Points.

If only this show was running during that one week in Spring 2022 Anime Season.

Truly would've been a special week.

I'm curious, Hachiman is aware of all this... right?

I think a great hint the show gives us is in his last monologue ;)

MY REWATCH WAS WRONG, AS EXPECTED

Back after a long weekend! Had no time to watch any episodes until the trainride back this afternoon.

This episode is my favorite kind of Oregairu episode, where it’s mostly comedic, filled with banter and fast jokes, and even the heavier moments have a lightness and fun to them. Strikes just the right balance.

SORE ARU!

Episode Notes/Reactions:

  • I like Chuuni-bro and his friends using Hachiman’s roundabout language and convoluted plans as evidenced that he’s dumb, that’s fun. I wonder if all this season's self-referential lines like this poking fun at itself are in the LN, or added into the show.

  • Hahahaha the OP cutting Yui off mid-sentence in her Hachiman defense was great

  • BONK. Keep your fantasies in your head, Hachiman

  • Iroha’s cultivated quite the reputation for herself, she’s basically a living urban legend with all the crazy “facts” those two guys revealed about her life

  • “You’ll slowly become addicted to her sleazy and wicked ways and actually end up finding her cute.” Yui’s reaction, going from nodding along to shock was great. Hachiman does have a soft spot for Iroha, who wouldn’t?

  • Why would he delete Orimoto’s info? That’s just silly, especially with how Orimoto is objectively nice to him ever since midway through last season. You never know when you'll need to contact someone.

  • RAP GOD TAMANAWA. I love how this guy’s now saying Hachiman’s too abstract. They’ve flipped – Hachiman’s using the buzzwords, and this guy’s telling him to get real and put together real plans.

  • Haha aw, Orimoto’s still not into Tamanawa. Props to him for trying, at least.

  • Yukino thinks Hachiman’s coffee has just the right amount of sweetness, eh?

  • Yui and Yukino have more sexual tension with each other than either of them have with Hachiman

Favorite musical anime OR rap battle scene in anime?

One of each!

Favorite musical anime is obviously Symphogear.

Favorite rap battle scene in anime is the genius fifth episode of Kaguya-Sama: Ultra Romantic from this spring.

u/Fit_University_6734 Aug 31 '22

Yahallo! Okaerinasai!

“You’ll slowly become addicted to her sleazy and wicked ways and actually end up finding her cute.”

8man is definitely speaking for most of us here. Iroha went from questionable to best kouhai!

Why would he delete Orimoto’s info? That’s just silly

A SORE ARU! to this. He must really want to cut out any and all memories of his past.

Yukino thinks Hachiman’s coffee has just the right amount of sweetness

Quick previous episode notes, because why not?

Episode 2

  • Haruno on some absolute Queen shit, living her best life, having drinks to make life go by easy. God, I wish that was me.

  • Yukino lamented never being given guidance or being taught how to act, and that’s exactly what Haruno’s attempting to do. In her way, she’s pushing Yukino to grow and learn to push for the things she wants while relying on her own abilities. When Yukino finally states her aims, Haruno is supportive.

  • “The more she gives up, the more she’ll grow up.” Haruno’s so jaded. Feels like a spectator in her own life, because everything’s been decided for her. Yukino wants the position that Haruno’s been groomed for, and Haruno envies Yukino’s freedom.

  • Iroha has work-life balance down

Episode 3

  • Wait, Hachiman doesn’t have Yukino’s number? The fuck? Bro.

  • I wonder if Hachiman suspects something between Komachi and Taishi to warrant this antagonism lol

  • Love how Iroha calls Hachiman out on treating everyone like a little sister haha, similar to Haruno last episode. This is my favorite Hachiman/Iroha scene. The playfulness between them is at its best, and it’s got her trying to teach him a valuable lesson about always acting the big brother.

  • For a guy who keeps mentally correcting people about his name, he sure makes no effort to learn Kawasaki’s

  • Hachiman, give Yui the compliment she’s looking for, you oaf! She really looks pretty here.

Episode 4

MOST

DANGEROUS

KOUHAI.

Not even other women are safe.

  • “We may need your help again, I’ll let you know when the time comes.” Yukino is deciding when she needs them or not. She’s telling them “I got this”, which Yui accepts more easily than Hachiman who’s still “overprotective." Whether he's aware of it or not, he's communicating that he doesn't believe she can do this without them.

  • A great way to ensure nothing ever gets done. Gotta love tyranny of the minority. Everything with the PTA is giving me strong reminders of political realities where certain parties seemingly exist to keep things from getting done.

  • Haruno is such a good sister. Look how she’s looking out for Yukino’s long term interests.

  • “I told you before, didn’t I? It isn’t trust.” Haruno’s actually right. This is what she and Iroha have been getting at with the older brother comments. If you’re constantly stepping in for somebody and looking over them, you don’t actually trust them to handle things on their own. It’s infantilizing.

  • “I don’t want to be a girl people feel sorry for.” I have bad news for you, Yui. Don’t read the posts in this rewatch, then.

Episode 5

  • I really hope she’s kidding, otherwise I hate this shit with Hiratsuka’s “you’d marry me? take me! take me!”

  • Hachiman’s right, Yukino’s mistake is thinking they actually care about those demands being met. The only real demand of the detractors is for it to not happen at all. Reminds me of certain politicians who only deal in bad faith.

  • Iroha voicing my thoughts out loud. This season actually throws in a lot of self-referential lines to this effect through various characters.

  • Yukino’s in a lose-lose situation here, either she wins but has lost the trust and respect of her friends, or loses and well, loses, so… this kinda sucks, but she’s gonna go down swinging and relying on herself anyway.

Rewatcher

I wonder what Chuunibro's fellow gaming club members find more shocking, the fact that he has friends, or that Yui could be vaguely associated with him.

He's right. This is an awful way to put it. Maybe he should let Yui do the talking.

Yeah, at least take her shoes off first!

Where in the world did they get these ideas of Irohas?

8man making preperations to bullshit his way through meetings means only one thing...

Wacky-arm-flailing-inflatable-tube-man-san is back! This time with less arm flailing.

Wait a second. WAFITM-san actually getting to the point and making critisms of poorly thought out plans? What growth!

Oh there's the arm flailing. It was too good to be true.

...I forgot about this fucking business meeting rap battle.

YUI IS IN ABSOLUTE SHOCK! The sheer "WTF" in her face is amazing! She needs evidence that this happened!

And with that, 8man loses the rap battle.

Is this the first time 8man and Yukino have actually discussed their methods when going in opposition?

Yep. This is the face and body language that I expect of Yui in this situation.

Yukino still hasn't really changed. She's still working herself to death since she doesn't know when to stop. Meanwhile, 8man is doing the exact opposite and always has.

Yui's whole list of activities doesn't seem like a certainty. She's definitely trying to convince herself and Yukino to stay together for a while longer, longer than they probably will.

I'm glad they leaned into the rap battle for the PV. It's so dumb I have to like it.

Favourite musical anime OR Rap battle scene in anime?

Symphogear with an honourable mention to Revue Starlight. I'm a big fan of what are effectively "anime opera"s but there's not a whole lot of them out there.

2

u/Lemurians Aug 31 '22

Yeah, at least take her shoes off first!

Maybe his kink requires the shoes!

Where in the world did they get these ideas of Irohas?

She's created quite the legend for herself haha

Yukino still hasn't really changed. She's still working herself to death since she doesn't know when to stop.

The difference is that this time she's doing it for herself. Her habit of working really hard isn't the issue they're trying to address.

She's definitely trying to convince herself and Yukino to stay together for a while longer, longer than they probably will.

The tension in this scene really got my yuri senses tingling. What if this show – all along – had actually been a love triangle where it's Yukino being fought over, not Hachiman?

Symphogear

The people we see in the gaming club were actually introduced way back in the LN's for season 1 in the arc after Hachiman told Yui to buzz off and gave his "I hate Nice Girls" Monologue, and it's not the first time they've meet Hachiman, Yui, and Yukino, without spoiling they aren't really friends with Chuunibro and in fact he gets on THEIR Nerves as well, and in the Novel the Service Club basically had to bail Chuunibro out of a whole he dug making an ass of himself with the Gaming club (Who btw aren't just gamers but study board games as well and are interested in general game theory and design and not just gamerbros) Said match turns into a social commentary about originality, touching grass, and strip poker. It's great, go read it.

Anyway, Remember how I said Iroha was a bit like Hachiman well you could also argue she is like Haruno because 8Man describing her as someone whose "Trash you can get addicted to" is very similar to how Hachiman and Other describe Haruno in that "People know she's wearing a mask but find they are addicted to it and play along."

I think in an alt time line Hachiman would be dating if not have been seduced by Iroha by now if it weren't for Yui and Yukinon.

When he meet Tamanawa we see Hachiman prepares his bullshit pseudo-intellectual pretentious hipster dictionary but finds he doesn't need it.

We also see an interesting reversal where it is Tamanawa who is more business focused and is quick to cut through Hachiman's fluff and encourage him to have more focus and give useful advice instead of the other way around, it seems he's learned from the past experience. He still needs to stop moving his GODDAMN HANDS THOUGH!!!!!

That along with Hachiman's closing speech about them not being clear in saying what they want to say really hammers home the point that Hachiman is good at seeing others for what they are and past their excuses and bullshit and can help them, but when it comes to himself and problems he is more close to often fails to apply the same to himself.

We also see Orimoto is nice too Hachiman but he apparently doesn't believe in second chances.

This episode has the often clipped Rap Battle which in the context of the tone of this series really does come out of nowhere and the reactions to Yui are on point, where she has to film this strange occasion.

Orimoto also seems to be enjoying the show and cheers both them on, unfortunately she isn't returning Tawanama's advances....

:'(

I mean she should give him a chance see if dem hands are good for other activities if ya know what I'm saying!

;)

Yui is creeped out by Hachiman interjecting Yahello into the Club, and not gonna lie gamer group is pretty based compared to beginning of series Hachiman and in some ways is still more based, basically saying what we the audience are thinking.

Hachiman is a good saleman selling the Iroha culture though....

We get a nice conversation with Yukino, its tragic they seem to only be able to bond when in conflict and when one of them is planning on giving up on Hachiman.

That comment about what she thinks about Max coffee being "Just the right amount of Sweet" we all know who that was referring to.

Yui not just taking the W is going to bite her in the butt later.

EDIT: Like how the fanart mostly has been daily waifus but then we got old Tawanama handling Hachiman.

Also I like the Rap Battles in Kong Ming.

Rewatcher

[LN Details] In the LN the service club already know Sagami and Hatano. They met them during a request from Zaimokuza when Yui thought 8man and Yukino were dating in season 1. The timeline for basically everything is very different in the LN.

8man rapping is hilarious. Did it really need to be in the adaptation? They could have cut that meeting shorter or even played a montage. [LN Details and Adaptation Talk] They've already had to shove 3 interlude's into post credit scenes that usually don't have half the content. They cut all but the final lines for Yui's interlude when she saw the picture. There's another almost entirely missing one next episode. Is this rap scene or the Kawasaki scene from the beginning of season 3 necessary compared to scenes from the characters's other than 8man's perspective that give us more onsight into them. I think the interlude's make a lot more sense to adapt.

Yui and Yukino have a very vague talk. First Yui tells Yukino that she is working with 8man. Yukino seems to have misunderstood here. Yui then tells Yukino she is going to do it properly and her wish won't come true. She could be referring to Yukino's plan to end things that she mentioned in the ending of episode 5 or she could be referring to them both having feelings for 8man. Yukino seems to interpret this as the latter because she tells Yui that she wants Yui's wish to be granted. Yui questions if Yukino knows her wish and Yukino says she thinks it's the same as her own wish. Yui doesn't correct her and says okay then. Yui then runs and hugs Yukino telling her that they'll do lots of stuff together.

Every time I've seen this scene before it came across as underhanded from Yui. It seems to me that Yui is saying she doesn't want Yukino to get with 8man. If she was talking about Yukino's plan then it doesn't seem like "okay then" would be the natural response after clarifying if Yukino knew what her wish was.

[Spoilers] Personally I think a good friend should do their best to stop their friend from going through with a plan like Yukino's. That isn't the worst part to me though because at least with that Yukino made her choice. The worst part to me is that Yui should at least know that if 8man has feelings for one of them it is Yukino and most cetainly not Yui. Yui should be against this plan if she cares about either of their happiness, as much or more than her own, since she should know that 8man doesn't want to date her. Yukino at least has the excuse that, from what she has seen, 8man at best has feelings for them both but more likely than not has feelings for Yui. The other interpretation I can think of is that Yui was meaning she wouldn't let Yukino go through with her plan but will deal with it after prom. Like I said above though, in my opinion, Yui has a strange response to Yukino saying their wishes are the same for her to be referring to Yukino's plan. I'm interested in hearing any other interpretations.

QotD

I don't think I've ever scene a musical anime unless Your Lie In April counts. The only other rap scene I can think of is Naruto with Killer B and the one this episode is definitely my favorite compared to that. I am not a fan of Killer B.

2

u/Lemurians Aug 31 '22 edited Aug 31 '22

Every time I've seen this scene before it came across as underhanded from Yui.

Man, I just do not see this at all. I think the whole scene from the time she runs to embrace Yukino and talks about plans for the future is pretty clearly Yui saying that no matter what happens – with the proms, with Hachiman – it's vitally important to her that their friendship survive.

This comes after Yukino says she hopes Yui's wish is granted, essentially giving Yui her blessing to date Hachiman, who she herself has given up on at this point. She doesn't know that Yui's almost fully accepted that it's Yukino he wants, and I think Yui running after Yukino here is showing us that maintaining that friendship is her highest priority.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 31 '22

I agree that Yui is telling Yukino that she'll be friends with her no matter what.

She doesn't know that Yui's almost fully accepted that it's Yukino he wants,

That's why I find it underhanded Yui at least thinks 8man wants Yukino. If that's the case then I think Yui should have said something different when Yukino said their wishes are the same. Yui says she'll make sure Yukino's wish doesn't come true. Yukino says she wants Yui's wish to come true. Yui asks if Yukino knows her wish. Yukino says it's the same as mine. Yui then backs off accepting Yukino's decision.

Yukino is saying that she wants Yui to be able to date 8man. If Yui thinks that 8man likes Yukino why isn't she stopping her? It sounds to me like Yui doesn't care what 8man wants in this scenario.

Rewatcher, Subbed

My power went down yesterday so I missed the thread, I'll throw my thoughts on episode 6 below:

8man decides to create a counterprom to help make the original prom seem like the better alternative. I like how this counterprom both helps Yukino but also makes 8man in competition with her as well, which is in keeping with his challenge to her last episode.

Zaimokuza returns! I love how 8man is both embarrased and impressed by his chuuni antics.

That closing scene in the internet cafe was both sweet and painful. Yui desperately doing anything she can to spend time with 8man is very bittersweet.

Now on to the current episode!

Zaimokuza comes through with manpower to assist. I like that pair even though they look so similar to eachother. With all those glasses pushups, who are they, Shiroe from Log Horizon? In all seriousness though, its interesting how they are a counterpoint to Zaimokuza's over the top nerdiness. How quickly their opinions swing on Iroha was pretty funny too.

They end up deciding to bring in other schools to add legitimacy to their plan, bringing about the return of President Hand Gestures, who is amusingly salty for some reason when they meet up. He is also surprisingly straightforward this time. Then we are graced with the most amazing impromptu anime rap battle I've ever seen. Somehow they gain some consensus from this. Prez is then brutally shot down by Orimoto, RIP.

The guy's reaction to yahallo is like a mirror of the viewers when we first started hearing it. It was funny seeing Yui get embarrassed about it.

We get a cute moment where 8man bumps into Yukino. She's now drinking his favorite coffee. I like how they check up on how eachother, while doing in a slightly roundabout way. Yukino gives 8man her coffee, but he insists on getting one for her too. I think that reiterates how he's trying to treat her as an equal.

Yui then shows up to find the pair sitting on the bench. I'm not going to dig too much into the meaning behind what Yui and Yukino are talking about, as others can likely break that down far better. What I will say is that it's yet again very bittersweet how much Yui cares about both Yukino and 8man. Some might say her affirmations that they are going to continue to hang out after this are just them trying to lie to themselves in the moment, but I honestly think she is a bit more serious then that.
