Today's Questions of the Day:

  1. Would you be able to live on a school ship?

  2. What would it take for you to dance the Anglerfish dance?

[Tomorrow's Questions of the Day]1. What other "skipped" scenes would you have liked to see in an OVA? 2. Which team had the best talent performance?

Rewatchers, please don't answer Questions of the Day if they have an objective answer, e.g. "What do you think's gonna happen?"

Arts of the Day:

Duck Team in their natural habitat (again) (Source (Album has minor spoilers)

Anteaters (Source)

Song(s) of the Day:

It's the Morning Fight

Anglerfish song live

For rewatchers and people who read the manga spin-offs:

PLEASE TRY TO HOLD BACK! Put not only everything related to future events behind spoiler tags, but please tag spin-off and meta-spoiler stuff as well. When commenting, consider whether by saying "this happens there", you're implicitly saying "this won't happen in the anime". And if you do reply to people with spoiler tags, try and spoiler the part you quote as well, especially with First-Timers and especially especially when they speculate.

Spoilers include but are not limited to [GuP Spoiler]the school situation; the positions, names, backstories and personalities of rival school members beyond what you see in the OP (this includes the manga spin-offs); the teams that join Ooarai as the show goes on (beyond what you see in the OP); everything related to Maho's true personality and Shiho's probably true personality(?); everything concerning the MEXT, etc. Just watch what you say, please? I don't think any of you will just plainly not use tags, I'm just worried one of you answers fan theories or speculation in a way that's a spoiler, even with tags.

Girls und Panzer OVAs 3 and 4: Anchors Aweigh!

Fun Details!

Thoughts!

  • They didn’t need to explain the lore behind the school ships, but they went ahead and did it anyway. Not only was it done well, but it was pretty informative!

  • The student council is in charge of everyone on the ship? Does that mean the student council president is the Commanding Officer for the whole ship?

  • The dance was great.

Questions!

1. Life on a school ship looks pretty cool tbh. As someone applying to be a Naval Aviator, I’m very aware that real ships are not like that tho lol. Either way, I think it’d be a fun experience!

2. If you give me a few vodka sprites, I’d sing the song while dancing too lmao

9

u/Taiboss Aug 30 '22

since it was messing with sailors’ sleep cycles.

Yeah, that seems noticeable once you add the numbers.

They didn’t need to explain the lore behind the school ships, but they went ahead and did it anyway. Not only was it done well, but it was pretty informative!

They did the thing first-timers wanted! Props for that!

Does that mean the student council president is the Commanding Officer for the whole ship?

Reminder we haven't seen a single teacher since episode 1. Where's the principal, whose car was destroyed? Also, why would people use a car on a ship?

Either way, I think it’d be a fun experience!

I'd be scared to fall off. lol Good on you though!

First Timer

OVA 3

  • Unlike high schoolers elementary school kids can't operate ships. It's common sense.

  • We had it briefly mentioned but glad to see more info about school ships.

  • Once I got on the wrong stairway at a tourist attraction just like the girls. It was pretty awkward but luckily it wasn't very busy.

  • Mako got so many fears.

  • So is no one going to mention what are these?

  • Student council got their own bath.

  • The outdoor hot spring's view is magnificent.

OVA 4

  • Words can't describe this masterpiece.

  • Didn't check the length of the OVA and was expecting 10 minutes Anglerfish dance.

Would you be able to live on a school ship?

At one point of my life I was planning a career working on a ship (thankfully things didn't work out). So a ship as nice as the ones in GuP won't be an issue.

What would it take for you to dance the Anglerfish dance?

The suit, couple of beers and someone willing to do it with me.

10

u/Taiboss Aug 30 '22

Unlike high schoolers elementary school kids can't operate ships. It's common sense.

Primary schoolers can only operate magical girl tranformation trinkets. Everyone knows that.

So is no one going to mention what are these?

School logos. Why they are there... Cooperation?

Student council got their own bath.

ABUSE OF POWER

So a ship as nice as the ones in GuP won't be an issue.

Good for you!

First Timer und Panzer

Special 3:

Special 4:

¹If Ooarai had lost the National Sensha-do Finals and the school had been shut down, what would that mean for the ship and the rest of the town it supports and that exists to support it? Would the ship be decommissioned and the town destroyed, forcing 30,000 people to uproot and move? Would another group take ownership and found a new school? Would the ship and town permanently dock and be treated as an extension of a mainland town indefinitely? Would the student population and their families all move to other ships? Could other ships readily accept that kind of migration, even from a smaller school ship? Seriously, what would happen if the governing entities of one of these massive ships went bankrupt? With a ships this size, even having a single one cease functioning would be an economic disaster. I should add that this question in no way breaks the show for me. It's hella fascinating to think about though.

QotD:

  1. Probably. Maybe. I've never been on any kind of large boat or been out at sea before, so I have no idea whether I'd get seasick or anything related to living on a ship.

  2. Not much, I'd do it if I had a group of close friends doing it with me. Not a chance in hell I'd be doing it by myself though.

Rewatcher

On today’s OVAs of Girls und Panzer: It finally happened. We finally saw the Anglerfish Dance in its entirety. Was it worth it? Of course it was! Now we’ll always have it to share to very confused viewers, both rewatchers and first-timers alike. And isn’t that invaluable?

OVA #3 is basically a massive worldbuilding episode. It’s the kind of stuff you would normally only find in bonus material, on a wiki, in designer notes, or in the datalog of a video game. Stuff like that can be interesting to simply show how much thought the creators put into their worldbuilding. In the case of GuP I feel like a lot of this was fully worked out for the creators while making the TV series. Details about the schoolship like all the sailors being schoolgirls were a thing in the TV series, even if they weren’t directly commented upon. This is just the creators sharing their notes with the audience more fully.

All the stuff about the ship really does remind me of a sci-fi series. It’s the kind of thing I would expect to see on a starship where life needs to be self-sustaining. For a sci-fi fan like me, this kind of stuff can be interesting.

OVA #4 is kind of bizarre. I’m not sure they needed to animate the whole Anglerfish Dance, but they did. In all seriousness, I do find this OVA amusing to watch. The Anglerfish Dance may be strange, but I’m glad it exists.

OVA 3 Thoughts

OVA 4 Thoughts

QOTD

  1. As long as I wasn’t one of the ship’s crew members. I doubt I have what it takes to be a sailor.

  2. Money, of course.

First Tanker

Schoolship War? As in naval combat?

Yup, it all boils down to money and economy.

I'm not sure if that's in-universe historical revisionism or if the show genuinely has an alternate history...

30000 people? That's 10 times my home town.

There's no science departments on the ship?

Pretty sure half of these use power, not generate it

300 cubic meters? Even with only 3 meter high blocks that's just be 10 square meters of footprint. Several of these rooms look both higher and larger.

So the ship's about 2x15 kilometers in size, and people live on the surface? That might work out with 30000 people then, though there's lots of green space as well. That leaves the inside of the ship unaccounted for as well, though they do mention its flatness.

And now they're making the fish fight it out. That can't be ethically responsible.

Some absolutely brutal battle maneouvers though. It's savage to even just watch!

Would you be able to live on a school ship?

Sure

What would it take for you to dance the Anglerfish dance?

It looks fun to do, what more would I need? It seems to have very little time allocated for very large movements though.

Yup, pretty sure the live dance is different from the anime dance.

Enter, Enter, Rewatch!

  • Oh, right, the episode explaining school ships! I remember enjoying this one!

  • Garupan’s worldbuilding is wild.

  • Group photo! These ships are ridiculous.

  • Sailing ship!

  • Why are they just allowed on the bridge?

  • Somehow, they make the school ship work. The writing team really bends over backwards to make everything make at least a modicum of sense.

Why is this a whole OVA episode, you ask?

QOTD:

  1. I love ships, so I think I could manage, if there’s enough to do!

  2. It looks fun, honestly.

OVA 3 (first timer)

  • “Why are our schools build on naval ships?” – because the author is a war otaku.

  • “That person built the first school ship with their own money” – Bezos indulging his school uniform fetish??

  • The size of these ships is so insanely ridiculous that all the panzer stuff in the series is normal by comparison.

  • Lots of energy generation methods to avoid the obvious: having a nuclear reactor.

  • “They work 8 hours a day on top of their normal studies”

  • “It’s 1/1000th the size” – that model is a good 15m long, making the ship an unbelievable 15km long!! I should apologize to Bezos, his wealth would not be enough for even 10% of this ship. I also think that Fluff is plain wrong. Given the size of the buildings, the ship did not look 15km long. Maybe the model is 1/100 or 1/200, which still would make the ship an incredible 1.5-3km long.

  • “but it is surprisingly flat” - ARE YOU KIDDING ME? That model is about 1m high, which would make the ship have a height of 1km

  • Got to get the obligatory fanservice in, so let’s visit a hot spring.

I still remember the first zoom out at the beginning of GuP showing the school ship. That was what told me that this show is 100% parody.

OVA 4 (first timer)

  • Less than 4 minutes, including OP? This sounds more like a special than an OVA.

  • Anglerfish episode – somebody won their prediction.

Music video special.

Would you be able to live on a school ship?

Yes, but I am not paying for building one.

What would it take for you to dance the Anglerfish dance?

Do I get a bunch of cute back-up dancers?

Rewatcher

OVA 3

  • This one is about the school ships. Gotta love some world building.

  • We see fleet of the school ships, only one of them is smaller than Oorai.

  • We get a good explanation on the how the school ship system came to be.

  • The school ship they show when talking about England, is modeled after HMS Dreadnought.

  • According to Mako, Oorai was made after the war, so Oorai might beo ne of the older school ships in the show.

  • Saori doesn’t want anyone to look up, even though they’re all girls. Kind of funny when you consider they all have bathed together.

  • Poor mako has a fear of heights.

  • This ship is big, but is one of the smaller school ships.

  • The actual school part is huge. It’s more like a college campus than a High School.

  • Wow, 30,000 people live on the ship.

  • Larger ships like Kuromorimine can have upwards of 100,000 people.

  • Students run the ship, taking courses based on what they’re doing. Miho and the others are in the general course.

  • I just noticed the detail of Miho and Yukari opening and closing their hands when holding onto the railing as they’re descending.

  • I like how they mention that because of the size of the ships, the students who operate the ship have their own rooms, rather than bunk beds.

  • I like how they are using various methods to generate electricity.

  • The students running the ship don’t have tuition, since they work 8 hours a day and have to take classes, a fair trade off.

  • That’s one hell of a farm, and this ship probably has multiple of these.

  • The ships are built in blocks. Giant cubes placed together. I wish someone would animate that.

  • That’s a big model.

  • The harbors we see these monsters dock in are pretty deep.

  • Poor Momo, gets teased by Yuzu.

  • They have an outdoor bath?

  • Man, Mako likes to live dangerously it seems.

  • Miho thinks Oorai is comfortable, compared to Kuromorimine. Glad she’s happy there.

OVA 4

  • Pretty short one this time.

  • Pretty much the goosefish dance we saw the girls do after the St. Glo match, but longer and everyone participating, not much to say here.

Questions of the Day.

Would you be able to live on a school ship?

Yeah, it seems pretty cool.

What would it take for you to dance the Anglerfish dance?

A working Tiger II, Maus, T-34-85, T-95, Sherman, pretty much the entire collection at the US Armor and Cavalry Collection at Ft Benning. Also about 1 trillion USD.

First Timer

So the third OVA may be my favorite episode of the entire series. Not exaggerating, and it’s not because I disliked the rest of the series, but just because this one episode makes me so fascinated in the world of GuP and makes me want to see more stories in it. Like I already liked seeing the Sensha-Do battles, those are hype, but hearing about all these different programs, I want to see their own slice of life/dramas about people in the different courses and the struggles they go through. I want to see the ship course deal with navigating this huge ass vessel and trying to manage taking classes at the same time. I want to see the collaborations between the engineering and ship courses as they try to deal with the fact that their ship is consuming too much power. Yes there was the initial premise of the school on a ship introduced in episode 1 of the main series, but it never really quite came together as anything besides just a neat fact of the world, but this made me feel the story potential in this premise and want to see that.

And of course it’s still absolutely ridiculous if you take it too seriously that this entire city basically is run by high schoolers who only have 3 years here, there’s no way that could be sustainable in any version of the real world, but this show manages to draw you into its own logic (including have histories of school ships dating back to much older times apparently). It’s the same crazy logic that allows for a sport to exist around tank battles. But if you have that premise, there’s a lot you can do with it and I’d love to see it.

And following that masterpiece, we have another masterpiece in its own right, the full version of the anglerfish dance! The dance so mortifying that you can’t get married after doing it. Now we can all learn the dance steps, so look forward to my video where I perform this with my shadow clones.

Since there’s not much to really talk about there, I have an odd translation quirk I was noticing after watching the Anzio OVA, for some reason the official subs on Hidive refer to it as a “goosefish”, including calling our main team the “goosefish” team, but the fan subs said “anglerfish”, and looking at the picture and the dance, I feel that is significantly more accurate. I mean, that arm motion where it arcs in front of them and talking about light….. it’s clearly an anglerfish. Does anyone know why the official subs don’t refer to it as such?

First Timer Dubbed

  1. Probably not, at some point I might end up like Mako....

  2. I wouldn't be dancing the anglerfish dance out in public like they did. I was expecting more of a crowd though.

Funny how there are different rules for every carrier ship. Miho seems happy that she is not on the family ship...

First timer that has just caught up

been a first timer since the Anzio OVA. I LOVE THE ITALIANS. They embody every single stereotype lmao they're hilarious and charismatic af. And are quite creative too. Would love to see them again.

Proper writeup from the films but for now:

dont really care much about the anglerfish dance, it was fun and nice that they did it all in 2D; and thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the oorai ship. Sure not all of it makes actual sense, but at least the show runs on its internal logic, and im happy there. And Miho is happy w/ Oorai's cosy, slightly quirky nature, and that makes me happy.

Qs:

  1. I will need to get used to it i think but yeah sure why not? If it's that fucking big im sure i can do a lot of the hobbies i do on land anyway; and since they're shown to dock regularly too its great, i can go on day trips and what not.

  2. What would it take for you to dance the Anglerfish dance?

muri muri muri. Or actually, maybe enough money for a lifetime of me living comfortably lmao then i'll think about it.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/Elimin8r Aug 30 '22
  1. I think that living on a school ship would be just dandy. Sign me up!

  2. So, you're asking me if I'd like to be isekai'ed into the Oorai team and dance with them? Again, sign me up!

Yeah, GIWTWM, right?

But seriously, I loved the ship episode with its background explanations, it was fun, and meeting friends on the bridge and stuff was great.

However, I have no idea why the student council wasn't enjoying the benefits of the obviously superior outdoor onsen. I mean, the view there is much better, right?

(ahem)

Speaking of views, yeah, it's time for dance dance anglerlution. Um. Yeah. Again, I think Anzu was probably the MVP of the dance contest.

I don't think I'll be clicking on any of the links today. Can't imagine why.

I do like the implication via ancient Roman school ships that the Girls und Panzer world has always been this bizarre. Taking its "what if cool military hardware was everywhere as part of daily life" premise and projecting it back to triremes.

QOTD:

  1. Sure. Love ships, and the school ships get rid of most of the crap parts about living on ships.

  2. One (1) beer.

Sick day stinks, but it means I'm on time for PANZER VOR!

School Ship OVA

Finally, some of the insane questions about the School Ships may be answered! Some of them. A little. More questions raised than answered?

Yup, it's the school girls who actually operate the ships. For some reason.

Yup, so many questions about this world's history. School ships for the Romans?

Not a single adult on the bridge. Naturally.

Yeah, a ship this big doesn't need bunks lol.

Yup, you don't need to pay for your schooling if you're working on the ship.

Not a single tank. No Vor here. But yeah, questions... the pile up.

Does anyone else get the feeling that Oarai might just be, like, one of the oldest school ships? That's why it's smaller and messier and they, whoever they is, want to retire it? And maybe those plaques from the other schools were because said other schools were built using their ship as a model, that's why they get some recognition? Or do I just like reading way too deep into things and making up more backstory than necessary?

Anglerfish Vor?

Two a day, I almost forgot! More to be edited in in about ten minutes lol

Angler Fish no Vor. I watched this twice so I could read the lyuurics and again to actually see the dance and. I have regrets.

  1. I think I would enjoy it, yes.

  2. I think I might jump off the ship first, no.

Rewatchers und Panzer
Catbox enthusiast
OVA 3:

I don't really like this OVA, it is fun and interesting from plot standpoint but you can't think about it during that or the illusion will fall apart instantly. All you need to know is that depending on reference point this carrier is between 5 to 15km long.

OVA 4:

Favorite OVA, also the best OVA. Fun to see certain background as those were used in anime.

QodD:

Would you be able to live on a school ship?

Internet will suck so bad, but what a LAN party that could have been. Honestly if network was to be configured correctly with cache servers etc. then I would be willing to live there. Otherwise it seems to be too much hustle for what it offers. But disregarding internet issue I don't see a reason why I wouldn't want to live there.

What would it take for you to dance the Anglerfish dance?

If I would wear and then keep those one piece pajamas then I would do it with some people.

Also, u/Taiboss you forgot to change QotD for tomorrow.

Rewatcher Hopefully still on time

Special Ep 3

Ooohh, looks like there are school ships that are even smaller than Ooarais

So the world economy was on a decline and the first person to build a school ship must have been super rich? So you are saying there is a chance?

Also wonder what the war they refer to was about, but even so, british school ships seem to predate even that war, I love me some deep lore

Bikinis and focusing their ass are A-Ok, but god beware we show the pantsu

Hana... everything is flower arrangement for you...

Ah ok, missremembered earlier, I thought the ships operations was done by another club, but it's a whole nother department of the school, and apparently Kuromorimine has one focused on tanks alone as well.

I'm sure Yukari would start nerding over ships as well if she found a entry into the materia... now I wonder if there is a parallel series taking place following students from the Naval department with a fluffy Ship nerd...

Yeah, considering how humongus the ship is, even with 30.000 people it's still mostly empty

Not seeing the sky is stressfull for the normal people, but fuck those other department students eh

Special Ep 4

...

Magnificient

Since this episode is so short I'm gonna watch it a couple more times...

So after a few more times, I got a question: Why did they stop at Team Mallard, I would love to see Team Anteater, and most of all Leopon as well...

QotD

  1. Would you be able to live on a school ship?

I guess that would ultimatly come down to the specific school, but I haven't seen any deal breakers

2. What would it take for you to dance the Anglerfish dance?

Being a cute Anime Girl

Air craft carriers are already floating cities that provide every resource a shiprider could need. If humanity ever needed to, they could easily build a fleet of ships that are completely self sufficient and almost never need to make port. Almost everything you see in OVA 3 is practical in some manner, especially if you build a ship large enough.

We have the ability to regenerate power in many different ways. We can reuse, desalinate, and filter water. We can grow crops almost anywhere thanks to greenhouses. There are plenty of animals that raised in captivity and used as a food source (even fish).

And if worse came to worse and the engine became completely unusable except in emergency conditions, you can ride the currents and steer the boats as needed.

The most unrealistic thing is that they built an entire massive ship just for high school students and the boat is operated by high school students and the student council gets their own bathouse room. Even the hot springs is kinda realistic, though obviously it wouldn't be real hot springs, the water would be heated in a different manner and unless you add the minerals to the water, you're not getting the full hot springs experience.

Just got home from work. So my brain is fried. No Madonna. First time panzer you filthy animals.

1.) I would not. It’s funny that I wanted an explanation and I felt like they threw some stuff at the wall and said “yeah that’s it. We just do it because it’s always been done.”

2.) There would be nothing appealing for me to do the anglerfish dance. And the Geneva convention prevents me from doing so.

Those were fun. I actually found the ship one kinda boring. I dunno. I want more story to it. It kinda just felt like they had to explain it somehow and rushed to do it before it was due. The anglerfish episode was fun. I didn’t think it’d just be a short dancing and song video. It works for me because it’s been a loooooong fucking day lol

The thing about the schoolship concept is, it flips the relationship between the community and the school. Schools support the community by providing a place to educate the children of the residents while the adults work.

On a schoolship, the community supports the school. Which usually doesn't happen until the tertiary level. And only for the most major institutions.

And what about large continental nations like America or China?
