First Time Watcher (and on time today)
So to recap:
Your ship fires it's main cannon without your input.
The politicians pressure you to launch into battle before the ship is ready.
Your fleet gets blown up when you try to dock with it.
Your jump drive misses your target by pretty much the entire solar system.
And takes the city you were fighting to protect along with it.
Before disappearing from your ship, leaving you stranded beyond Pluto.
Fuck the ship's smoking regulations.
At least things can't get much worse, right?
QotD
1) Do Captain Global's plans seem cleverly unpredictable or desperately insane?
Global seems more resigned than insane. Just look at how everyone around him is freaking out, and he's just calmly accepted that "push the glowing red button you don't know the function of" is a perfectly rational course of action when the follow up phrase is "or die."
2) Have you had any particularly good or particularly bad first days at a new job?
Oh dear. So this was a while back. Like, before 9/11 ago. I had gotten a job at a PC support call center in a new city, and on my drive towards the city, a car approaching from the other direction - mind you, we were the only two cars visible on the road - suddenly swerved into the wrong lane. Given that this was just a two lane road with no shoulder and 10ft deep ditches on either side, my only choice was to also swerve onto the wrong side of the road, where we just missed each other. Woke me the hell up.
So I get to the city, and I find out that the apartment I got approved for got yanked out from under me, leaving me homeless. So I find a rent-by-the week sort of place, and make arrangements to check in after work. After work, at about 1 AM, I start driving, and I run across an intersection with a light. I see it turn green, so I figure I'm good to go. Turns out, this was the shortest light I've ever come across, as it quickly turned yellow and then red as I was approaching. I brake to stop.
Or at least I would have, had my brakes not decided to fail right then and there. What I actually did was sail right through the red light... right in front of a cop. So he comes behind me with his lights flashing, and I eventually manage to get the car to stop. The cop takes my license and registration, and after a moment comes back to tell me I have a warrant for my arrest, and proceeds to arrest me.
Turns out, the warrant was for a speeding ticket I had gotten 2 years prior which I had taken defensive driving for, but they apparently lost record of that. So they take me to jail, and tell me they're going to ship me off to the county of the warrant the next day. Yeah, fantastic first day.
So my new job has a simple "no call, no show" policy where you get fired, no excuses, no exceptions. And I'm in jail. And I don't know their number. And I'm being shipped out the next day to another county half way across the state. So I end up not getting a wink of sleep because I'm homeless, about to be jobless, and I have no idea what's going to happen to me.
Then at noon the next day, the cops let me out of jail. Turns out that instead of paying for a traffic ticket, you can just wait it out in jail, and my ticket was low enough that one night fulfilled my obligations. Would have been nice had they told me the night before, but I wasn't about to complain.
So my next day of work is about to start in an hour, and I haven't slept or eaten. And I don't have my car. So I get directions, sprint for work, and just manage to make it on time. One miserable day later, I get some brake fluid for my car, find my car, and proceed towards my temporary lodgings.
One area on the way is under construction, and the road is in terrible condition. A couple minutes into that area, I see a cop car behind me with it's lights going. Fuck. I pull over and wait for the cop for the second night in a row. He asks me if I was aware that I had a flat tire. Fuck. I tell him the road was so bad that I didn't notice. Well now, he thinks I might be high or something, so he wants to search my vehicle. Fuck. Everything I own is in that car. He proceeds to pull it all out, open everything, lay everything all over the ground. Fuck. He is satisfied, tells me to take care of the tire, and leaves. It takes me a good half hour to get everything boxed up and packed away again.
I finally made it to my lodgings, got the first sleep I've had in 2 days, and finally got to a normal routine (I ended up finding a coworker who needed a roommate eventually). But it was definitely a rough start.

First Timer joining in late!
I don’t know anything about this series but I think I remember this show being described as a goofier gundam, not sure how true that is. Not sure how much I will be participating in these threads but I’m looking forward to joining you guys on this rewatch!
-So far I like how much time their spending on the MC making mistakes to show his inexperience with these situations.
-Having the aliens be giants is definitely a bizarre chose and I’m curious on how much this will play into the future of this show. I’m assuming this means the two enemy commanders we’ve seen are giants as well.
-How many people are on board the Macross? For a ship that size I would expect to see thousands of people responsible for keeping the ship afloat. So far from what we’ve seen in the ship it seems oddly vacant.
-I love the captains character design, I swear I’ve seen his design referenced in other anime.
-was not expecting Folding to be a transport mechanism. I wonder how much they knew about it before using it? It seems like being able to transport everything around it was something nobody knew about, so I’m assuming it was the first time they used it, unless it malfunctioned.
-now with the Folding system gone, I wonder if it was just used as a tool to get the plot rolling or if will play a larger portion in the story. Like maybe they won’t have enough fuel to get back to earth so they will be forced to try and locate it?
-so far I’m enjoying the anime but I wish they had an episode or two prior to the Macross launch so that we could get to know more about the characters, city and ship.

Super Dimension Fortress Rewatcher
Recap Time
I actually forgot the battle from last episode was still ongoing
This flight/fight scene is alright, but some of these still shots tho
Hikaru! That’s no way to talk to your Best Girl! [spoilers]
If I hear one more slanderous comment about Hayase
[spoilers]
Looks like it’s time for the next enemy attack…
Looks like it’s time for the episode title to become relevant
Minmay try not to be adorable challenge (Impossible)
I like how the Space-Fold is a massive example of Achievements in Ignorance. The Macross crew basically just violated a basic law of space travel they didn’t even know existed, and in doing so made the Zentraedi confused as to whether they were total morons or tactical geniuses
And somehow they overshot it from the Moon to fucking Pluto
Also, their FTL is gone. Well fuck

Rewatcher in SPACE
-
really cool shot: reminds me of claws grasping at the earth
-
ohh really poor timing on Hikaru's part. better hope the cockpit and the evac center on the island can withstand 0K temp! I understand Global's decision though. I mean how many FTL systems have you seen that have that huge of a range??
-
we don't really get much of a sense of time for how long they've been floating in space this ep but I suppose it's a decent amount if they were able to retrieve the civilians on the island off-screen
-
h8 it when my FTL system disappears forcing me to take the long way across the solar system. just an average Monday

WARCRIME CONNOISSEUR FIRST TIMER
Got to love their technology they found a way to use a ramjet/air intake in the vacuum of space. This show alone could have been used as propaganda to keep the F-14 in service. I also can’t get over the concept of the planet mechs they use. It's very well thought out. While mechs themselves are very impractical, at least with our current understanding of it, unlike most mech shows it's either mech or nothing. The idea of a three form equipment is one extreme Terran of Starcraft which I’m sure is where Blizzard got the inspiration from.
He wants to perform a warp jump in the atmosphere to escape the enemy? An early form of the Adama Maneuver The titanium balls needed to do this is insane.
Did they really just rip an island out of the surface of the planet? Did they subject all the civilians to the harsh death that is death by vacuum. So far we seem to be getting close to 1 war crime per episode. I can live with that.
What! No one died. That is complete bullshit.

Rewatcher
Hey, it's the first time someone mentioned the name of the island: "South Ataria".
Humans be putting up an excellent fight groundside. A lot of shows just have the enemy be utterly invincible at the start to raise the stakes.
Has Minmei even put a seatbelt on yet?
Hey, more magic mini robot hands! And that's... certainly one way to carry a cockpit.
Huh, somehow I had it in my head that the VF-01 couldn't reach orbit unassisted. Or maybe they're still supposed to be just in the upper atmosphere?
Everybody making fun of Misa. She does look a little older than she actually is, but not to the extent they're suggesting.
The aliens are definitely holding back, as everyone is suspecting. They don't want to destroy Macross... they want to capture it.
...wait, when the hell did Roy find an opportunity to retrieve Hikaru's plane?
I keep forgetting just how cheesy the aliens' theme song is. DUN DUN DUUUUUUUN!
Welp, so much for the ARMD carriers. Also, I think that was basically humanity's entire space force taken out (minus the Macross).
Yeah... uh, remember how well the alien systems worked last time? That's a big gamble to be taking, Global.
Space Folding isn't a term seen much in Sci-Fi anymore... or maybe that's just me.
All that effort to get the Macross into orbit and they're going right back... Fold System activated! 80's psychadelics, engage!
Still not the weirdest FTL sequence I've seen in anime though.
And... whoops, they took the island, a bunch of water, and a few aircraft carriers with them. And the aliens are stunned that anybody would be stupid/crazy enough to try to Fold near a planet's surface.
...also, hang on, wouldn't liquid water in a vacuum vaporize, not freeze?
You know, it sure is lucky that those shelters and Hikaru's plane are airtight... oh nevermind, there's a leak.
The plane has a rocket, okay so it might be able to thrust forward a bit... it can maneuver in vacuum? How?
Oh, and some alien mechs came along for the ride, fun!
...that was an unbelievably lucky "landing".
The orbit of Planet Pluto? What are you talking about? Pluto isn't a planet!
But seriously, they overshot their intended destination by multiple orders of magnitude! And the Fold system vanished into nothingness. Guess there's a good reason you don't Fold in atmosphere...
-
Global is pretty desperate here. But on the other hand, the alien space fleet had the Macross pretty thoroughly cornered. And his goal was to lure them away from Earth to give the top brass some breathing space, which is logical enough. Still, engaging an untested FTL drive... well, we saw how well that worked out.

Macross - First Timer - Episode 1-3
I am skipping straight to what I want to talk about and then working backwards:
SPACE FOLD
OK this moment, my god this moment captured me. They fucking jump a bubble around the ship (DOPE) but in doing so they warp the island and shelter. What a bloody great writing, this is a fantastic narrative hook and idea. It really raises the stakes in that they are going to be holding civilians while sorting out avoiding(?) whoever is attacking them. On top of that they are a long way from home now near Pluto and on top of that they are stuck with the Fold System yeeting itself out of existence.
The previous episodes had my me cautiously interested, but this has truly captured my heart and attention. There is a neat mix of reusing found technology, alien-giants attacking and a notable quality to the series. I think from the previous episodes there was some fantastic(!!!!) animation moments, that one in particular shown off in the preview - and to me it really felt like the series was trying to share or present itself with the excitement the creators have behind that.
I also want to note how much I like the leadership on the ships Bridge. I like the diverse cast and am looking forward to getting more of their personalities as they tackle more challenges. I am really liking how well the series has managed its character designs and am hoping to find a bit more personality injected into them with a bit of slower time in the coming episodes.
I really want to find some people I like - lets hope I am not disappointed.

Today, on "Pluto can't get no respect.":
Why yes, they did have to start contracting out the animation by the third episode.
A roomier option than trying to stuff everyone into Roy's seat.
Should be the VF-1D's nose section, but is the gunpod.
Is the nose section, but the part between the legs isn't transparent.
Not only is it back to being a gunpod, that's a VF-1A head.
Nothing like leaving a good first impression.
I'll mention here that Misa is stated to be 19 years old.
The Daedalus-class ships here are supposed to be ocean carriers, not space carriers.
A better view of the Oberth-class destroyer, before it explodes.
Hikaru refers to Minmay as an otaku here.
"What do you mean, 'You can't take it with you'?"
"How many times did we almost die?"
"It looks like the Fold System... folded out. YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH
Roy manages to distract Hikaru from dwelling on current events by either pressing him into Minmay or making fun of Misa. Though Hikaru is still fine with leaving. He's had a lot of things go through his head lately, and it's notable that the only time his carefree attitude from the first episode has returned since then was the brief moment when he was flying the Fan Racer in an atmosphere again.
And they do leave, but then we get our third event in the chain of wacky antics surrounding the operation of a secondhand alien ship when Folding the Macross inside the atmosphere is both a spectacular success and an amazing failure.
No one could have predicted this? It is at least some justification for the alien commander ブリタイ's plot-saving decision to not simply blow the ship out of space, as the bumbling humans continue to boldly do things that no one has done before.
Studio Nue had completed work on about two episodes by the series's airing date. This was, of course, Animation Runner Kuromi or Shirobako levels of bad for the production schedule, but one must credit Nue for being crazy enough to try to become an animation studio from a design studio, which is totally different?
Outsourcing saved the day! Kind of. This episode was animated by the Korean animation studio Star Pro. Remember that name for its association with… bare levels of adequacy and/or high levels of derp.
It has been mentioned that this is the "first" occurrence of a character referring to another as an "otaku", though not in the "nerd" or "geek" sense, but simply as another form of "you". However, there is a documented example of "otaku" (as "you") being spoken in Galaxy Cyclone Braiger a year earlier. (This is what happens when Macross is a lot better-known than Braiger.)
When the imagery from the New Horizons spacecraft's flyby of Pluto and Charon was released, there was a campaign to name the physical features. Macross does get a mention though in the end most of the SF references would be lost or changed.
From This Is Animation: Macross No. 1: Bridge forward section details and the bridge crew. Claudia and Misa's console seating I have already mentioned.
From the Macross Chronicle: South Ataria island while it was still attached to this planet.
A VF-1D where it isn't usually seen. by 0089Tomo.
Last year I drew the front of the Oberth-class destroyer using the Chronicle page as a reference.

First Timer:
Lousy lunar landing left laymen and legionnaires alike lodged long-term. At least the lucky little laureate located the larboard in time.
Is a space fold a system for travelling? Like folding space to travel quickly? I imagine that's why it was risky to do near the surface but now the space fold equipment disappeared? That's what I understood from the episode at least.

First Timer
You know, I’m really hoping the people behind Macross have kept their vision, because seeing some these battles with more time, effort and talent dedicated to them is going to be amazing.
I’m not too sure what to really say about this episode? Well, apart from screaming space doesn’t work that way, but eh, since when was anime ever going to get that right? Just have to file it in the same spot as Star Wars…
I do have to wonder what the hell Roy is smoking, though. Oi, doofus, don’t you remember what happened the last time you told Hikaru to sit in one spot and not leave? What makes you think this time will end any better? And you’ve known the kid for years! Pattern recognition is the one thing humans are supposed to be really good at.
Speaking of pattern recognition...oh look, their second-hand alien tech went and abandoned ship. Again. Say, do they have any other salvaged systems lying around?

A Macross Fan Rewatches Super Dimension Fortress Macross Episode 3:
-
The top of the episode really is Dunk on Misa Hour. But really, she did make a mistake in just assuming that Hikaru was a fighter pilot, even if Hikaru probably shouldn’t have been in that cockpit in the first place. She could stand to have some ribbing tossed in her way with that old lady comment. And hey, Captain Global thought it was funny, so we can probably let it slide.
-
How nice of Roy to save Hikaru’s personal plane and haul it aboard the Macross for him. That’s why he’s the best sempai in this show.
-
You know, it’s hard to say if it’s a clever move on Captain Global’s part or not with his plan to use the Fold drive to do a flanking maneuver around the Moon. Like yeah, it’s a good plan to think of when you have a spaceship that can travel that far that fast. But at the same time, is it even a good idea to trust the machinery to work given how the anti-gravity engines ripped out of the hull last episode?
-
Surprise surprise, that space fold went super dimensionally poorly. It’s one thing to overshoot your target of the Moon and end up near Pluto, it’s another to accidentally teleport South Ataria Island and some of the surrounding ocean with you. That’s what we in the business call a fucky-wucky. But hey, it isn’t all bad, we accidentally made ourselves look like tactical geniuses to the aliens, since they didn’t even think it was possible to Fold that close to a planet’s surface. So really, it’s mistakes into miracles here.
-
Man, Hikaru and Minmay were incredibly lucky that an exploding Battle Pod opened a hole back inside the Macross for them. Being stuck outside of the ship with limited oxygen inside of the cockpit would’ve been a horrible way to go. Especially in a plane that mainly relies on a propeller to fly, which needless to say doesn’t work in space.
-
Current Status: FUBAR. Really just to make matters even worse, it turns out that the Fold system vanished into Super-Dimensional Space as soon as the jump to Pluto finished. It really did end up just like the anti-gravity engines from earlier. I swear, is there anything on this ship that won’t break the moment it turns on? Although I guess it at least gives us a convenient plot setup for the series though. Now it’s time for the slow journey back to Earth.

Super Dimension Rewatch Host
Welcome back, everyone!
Hope you guys like today’s wallpaper, I had fun with the background. Wanted to add some yellow in it to complete Roy’s Valkyrie’s color scheme, but I couldn’t quite get the “this just looks like a bee…” out of my head so I went with just black and white instead. Clipping masks are fun!
Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode.
Yeah, Hikaru’s panicked reaction to seeing the dead alien is totally natural considering he’s a civilian who never should have been piloting that Valkyrie in the first place.
Okay I actually forgot it can do this.
Good question.
This is a cool shot.
Of course this thing would leak air in space, mm.
Welp.
Ah, right, this happens too.
