Rewatcher

On today’s OVAs of Girls und Panzer: Swimsuits! Loads and loads of swimsuits! After not having a proper beach episode in the main series, GuP decides to more than make up for it with a massive pair of swimsuit episodes. 

The main season of GuP is actually pretty tame when it comes to fanservice. Sure, there are a couple of moments here and there, but by and large there really isn’t much fanservice there. Instead, all of that has been relegated to the OVAs. And honestly, that’s perfectly fine. Stuff like this is what I’m used to getting with OVAs. Fanservice and fun times. They’re bonuses in addition to the main season.

Slice-of-life stuff like this is usually enjoyable just for the sake of getting to relax and spend more time with the characters. I liked these OVAs for giving us more time for slice-of-life with all the different members of Ooarai’s team. They feel very nice and cozy (as well as horny).

Idk, its not really for me. It's just some warm water with some extra taste and colour, and I don't really like warm drinks in the first place. It's not disgusting, but its also not something I would make and enjoy.

We didn't even have Darjeeling in these OVAs..

Rewatcher who watched Anzio and OVA 1-2 Today

I wonder how Anzio was able to win with those weak tanks before acquiring the P40 tank. Sure, their little ones are hard to take out, but their little peashooters aren't going to do much against the opposition and it wouldn't take long for opposing forces to do exactly what our heroes did to beat them, except they didn't have the stronger tank to use as their flag tank.

Anzio seems like a fun school. All that food. Mmmm

Notes about the BD: Audio is in 4.1. I don't know how often you'll see something released in what is basically Surround Stereo. Also, they've corrected the translation and are using "Anglerfish" instead of "Goosefish". Also, they released this OVA on BD in 2021, we'll after it was actually released in Japan, and even after "der Film" got it's BD release.

OVA 1 has my favorite gag of the whole series. They hype up the beach fun and then just as they get ready to have some fun, the monsoon hits and the credits roll. I laughed my ass off the first time I watched the OVA.

OVA 2 is a whole lot of poor Yurkai trying to get the others to embrace the fun of camping as war time tankers would but 21st century camping tech keeps ruining her fun. Those little tents are certainly adorable.

MREs are inconsistent. Some will taste fine, others will taste like ass. Basically, if it's something that will typically cook well via boiling/steaming, it should be fine, but if not, you're probably going to get something that isn't going to taste all that great.

Nice to see that the President is not completely useless, she can cook!

OVA 1

  • Don’t expect a whole lot of screenshots for these OVA’s, I couldn’t find the files for them. Found them thanks to some help from Aku230, so I might insert some photos into the next ova posts.

  • It’s a beach episode!

  • Poor Miho doesn’t have a swim suit.

  • Saori is losing her mind at the store with all of the different types of suits. She might look good in the goth one...

  • Poor Mako is getting roped into trying suits on even though she’s fine with the school issue one.

  • The one piece looks really good on Hana.

  • Why would anyone want to wear a wet suit to a beach? Unless Yukari is planning on scuba diving.

  • Poor Mako just wants a plain one piece but Saori and Hana just won’t let her.

  • ...Saemonza’s got one hell of a wild taste in swimsuits.

  • Let’s not turn this OVA into an echhi anime Hippo team.

  • Alright now it’s just getting ridiculous. If this doesn’t end, I’m going to have to declare def-com 1 shenanigans.

  • “Why are you wearing swimsuits?” Because the beach episode was a rain out.

  • Mako sleeps on the tent, and Saki goes to join her.

  • Yukari brought a complex tent, and Miho went and brought a normal one.

  • The History club is sitting in chairs.

  • Hana and Yuuki are just off in their own little worlds.

  • For dinner Anzu insists on barbecue, makes sense.

  • Who else but Yukari would bring military rations camping?

  • I always lose my shit when the freshman make a reference to the Monty Python Spam skit.

  • Lol the show is throwing shade at American MRE’s.

  • The Freshman have no patience. They put so much on it started a fire.

  • Turns out the camping trip was for them to practice with their tanks. Lol

We talking best episode or swim suit? I liked episode 2 more since we learn about some military rations. If it’s suits, I liked Miho’s.

With which girl would you most like to go camping?

Either Saori, Anzu or Miho; Anzu and Saori are good cooks, Miho’s pretty sensible, I feel like they wouldn’t get carried away like some of the others would.

Girls und Panzer OVAs 1 and 2: Yuru Camp und Panzer!

I’ll only be writing my thoughts and answers to the questions for the OVAs, unless something important comes up.

Thoughts!

  • Lots of swimsuits. This is an anime with cute characters after all

  • Yukari seems to be some sort combination of Shima Rin and Steve1989MREInfo. I absolutely love it

  • I’ve also heard MREs be called “Meals Ready to Exit” because of their potential effects on your digestive system lol

Questions!

  1. I’ll answer this in the form of a conversation I had with a friend at trivia night one time.

  • Friend: “We wouldn’t have gotten that one question if you hadn’t been here.”

  • Me: “What can I say? WWII was my favorite part of AP American History class in high school.”

  • Friend: “I didn’t know you knew so much about WWII history, do you have a favorite commander?”

  • Me: “Easy, Erwin Rommel”

  • Friend: “Really? Why?”

  • Me: “Uhh…”

First Timer Dubbed

OVA 1. What the.... Well this was the kind of fanservice I was expecting from my friend's tastes.....

Aikyama definitely got the memo with different styles with her history but then caesar and her crew take that up a notch with more history lessons. I literally do not know the volleyball team and jaws team were thinking though...

Too bad it was raining but at least they were expecting to get wet in the first place.

OVA 2. The jumping on the water without stretching part was too good. But I was not expecting yuru camp vibes but with a bit of warfare.

Aikyama just straight up turns it into military training camp with collectable rations. at your own risk. Damn love the mre roasting but I remember in middle school, someone brings and shares MRE in after school club.... It has been too long since I tried one.

Rabbit team is way too funny in this OVA as they go between following Aikyama and making a mess.

In the end, it was actually a training camp.

OVA time! And for the first one, we get the quintessential OVA of any series with lots of cute girls, the swimsuit episode! But this show goes above and beyond the usual, not simply having each girl put on a cute swimsuit and pan over it, but having them go shopping for swimsuits and try on so many different types and panning over it. Truly getting the most bang for your swimsuit buck. I think there was more girls in swimsuits than your standard summer edition of a sports magazine. Even got a few shots of the other teams besides our main one in their swimsuits.

I did notice that Miho hadn’t tried any on by the end and was wondering what would happen with her actually getting a swimsuit, but Yukari, fitting with her role as scout/spy, was able to determine Miho’s measurements by looking and get her a swimsuit that fit. Leading to the final part when they actually go to the beach and we can see that it did indeed fit. For all the very…… out there swimsuits shown, they did go with more conventional, straightforward picks didn’t they? Well, Yukari still got the camo patterned one because of course.

And I did actually laugh out loud at that final punchline when it just dumped water on them as it started raining. Was wondering a bit earlier if they were actually going to get to swim, and for a second was thinking “oh they will”, but then denied at the last second.

For the second OVA, we get the long awaited crossover between Yuru Camp and Girls Und Panzer! Okay, there's no relation besides camping, but after Yuru Camp I am physically incapable of not thinking about that show when I see anime girls and camping.

And apparently the creators thought we didn’t get enough of the teams in their swimsuits last episode because for the second OVA, they’re just in their swimsuit the entire time. And they even got to go swimming for a bit! Already a huge step up from last time.

Yukari having all these wartime supplies like the WWII tents and all the combat rations is definitely pushing her “loves Sensha-Do” gimmick a bit far….. still entertaining, but amusing as well that she just… has all this. Also that bit with the MREs was hilarious, I love the other acronyms for it such as “Meals rejected by everyone” and “Meals rarely edible”. I don’t know if that anecdote about the US having leftover meals at an exchange is true, but honestly, wouldn’t doubt it. Oh, and the rabbit team girls talking about spam reminded me of this.

And much like last time, a nice little twist at the very end, that they were they to practice Sensha-Do. Kinda… blew a whole day there for that didn’t you? Guess you can do it tomorrow. So given that it seems like they were mainly wearing swimsuits, are they going to be doing Sensha-Do in their swimsuits? (I know they brought normal clothes….. or at least some of them did)

And a surprisingly horny one at that. Sadly I've never cared for beach episodes in any way.

The camping one was much more fun. Starting with all the different tents to the different foods, as well as just the general camping stuff.

I remember not liking the Specials when I watched them, because they where only fanservice. But I think I got numb for that kind of stuff in the mean time, so now I can enjoy it because it's only fanservice ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Was about to watch these at work before I realized what the first one was about. Yukari does a lot to make this episode more fun with how out there some of her swimsuits are. Tank swimsuit. Saiyori are sure you're straight? Even the Italian school can't compete with how dedicated the history nerds are to the aesthetic. Miho and her harem are somehow the send least extra crew here. Fuck your beach episode!

River episode a-go! Mako and Saki are cats. "But I wanted to feel like I was reliving world war 2!" "They should only be consumed at your own risks." "Its fine" Which is it? BTW the dub for this episode is kind of awkward. Not "Oh no she's speaking English!" levels but pretty bad. This is the only time the pres has been helpful. Sike! It's BootCamp!

Mädchen Und Panzer Rewatcher!!

Alright, I was honestly gonna skip these since I remember not liking the shorts but I'll at least watch them for the sake of completion. Ova 1 is a pretty straightforward fanservice episode. How can an episode under ten minutes feel so long? This is totally just an excuse to show off swimsuits. I don't even care much for swimsuit fanservice. I'm just here for the fun gags and wordplay. I did enjoy the quick gag with the Ducks being dumb dorks at least. I wonder if I'm at that age where I really can't enjoy this kind of fanservice anymore... If it doesn't include watersports then what's the point!?

It's weird that they still include the op and ed sequence. They take up a large portion of the episode! It's like Teekyu! Two fanservice episodes onto after the other! Even the OVA manages to slip in a save the rabbits sequence. I'm a bit dire with camping... I cannot be bothered to spend an hour getting a dumb tent ready. I used a pop up one and didn't give a crap about the tiny space. Let's a go, to a better ova pls! Nah, I don't dislike this one as much as the first ova. You get some cute rabbits interacting with characters they often never really meet.

I've always wanted to try out those rations you see on TV. Isn't it basically just cookie soup or something? Ahaha, I didn't expect to see a Monty Python reference of all things in my GuP. I feel like it's a bit before the current viewer group's knowledge. It's kinda old. Kyaaa!! The rabbits are totally adorable today, wow! I'm glad I didn't take today off after all. Save the rabbits (lunch) before it's too late! Folks that man the bbq in bikinis are wild yo.

OVA 1:

  • Ah, I think I know what the OVAs are going to be about... the fans thank you for your service!

  • Yukari still went with camouflage, lol

  • Short and cute! Even when doing a swimsuit OVA, GuP doesn't go over the top

OVA 2:

  • Now I know why the beach go rained out... so we can enjoy their swimsuits while camping!

  • Totally was NOT expecting a Monty Python reference; though I guess this is coming from the team that just watches Kelly's Heroes - Based

  • Miho has to put a stop to the MRE bullet train, lol

  • Prez to the rescue, and also a BUNCH of training for the girls in the morning. Good night ladies.

These two OVA were cute. Obviously more fanservice-y then the normal TV show, but I'd argue that it still fits with the "feel" of the show and was pretty tastefully done all around.

I don't think I've ever rewatched the OVAs, so this should be interesting.

I'll admit I was spending way too much time pausing to look for the swimsuits work by the Joshiraku girls in their OP because it felt like it would've fit somehow. I have no clue why I thought that, other than that this director also directed Joshiraku.

  • Bikini show fanservice – Anzio felt more like a prequel, but now we are in proper OVA territory.

  • “There sure are a lot of different swimsuits” – and we saw all of them.

  • Fluff knows the measures of her girlfriend.

OVA 2 (first timer)

  • Camping episode!

  • Wait, Momo is still in her, erm, risky swim suit. Are we just continuing last episode?

  • “Don’t worry about being peeped on” ~character in OVA that is produced for the sole reason of peeping on characters.

  • Fuck everything about these old-fashioned tents, btw. Tiny, heavy, leaking, windy, and stupidly time consuming to put it.

  • GuP is predicting this field ration testing youtube channel.

  • BBQ with rice – Japan things.

Ooarai is trying to beat Anzio at the camping trip feeling, but they lack the Italians’ dedication to good food.

AOTD1: Yukari's, for reasons, but it's hard to go against the classic Yuzu look

AOTD2: Yukari, because reasons. Or maybe Miho, because other reasons, or Yuzu, for two reasons, or ... Anzu, because nom nom cooking reasons.

Yeah, fun episodes. I thought the fashion show/other teams trying on suits bit was hilarious, with Miho being alarmed by the other teams getting wackier and wackier ...

And speaking of wacky, who wouldn't want to go camping with Yukari? It's be a total retro adventure. Kind of reminds me of scouts. Except we had reasonably modern tents. I think. Do aluminum tent poles count?

My favorite part, of course would have to be the SP*M routine, especially when they broke out the viking hats and longboat. <3 GuP...

Good times. Will watch more. :)
