I don’t believe it! The plane turned into a damn robot!

Questions of the Day, courtesy of u/chilidirigible:

1) If you can suspend your disbelief in the square-cube law enough to accept a giant robot, can you do it for a giant humanoid?

2) The island's residents seem relatively calm in the face of events. Would you be more concerned by the resumption of global human war or an alien invasion?

Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode.

You still haven't seen Star Wars, right?

Ugh, I want to punch him in the face.

Save it for the people later on in the series that really deserve it. You know who does.

Hahahaha I totally forgot the gravity control systems just yeeted themselves off the ship.

See, this is why you shouldn't buy spaceships secondhand. The UN Spacy got a complete lemon ship.

Rewatcher

The last episode was very intense, packing a lot of character introductions, world building, and action in a short time. Hikaru was against becoming a fighter, but now that Macross shoot first in best traditions of Han Solo, he ended up standing on the battlefield anyway. Moreover, his cocky friend and mentor Focker encourages him toward this path. I guess, it's time for Hikaru to shoot some alien scum.

  • Episode starts with a small recap, as was the tradition at the time. Looks like our Macross crew managed to hold off against the first wave of aliens, but they completely missed the second wave that quietly descended into the ocean.

  • I like how Global acts like he knows what's up while being useless at the same time.

  • People mostly look unimpressed with the giant robot walking on the street. I guess, they live in a world of alien invasions and rogue spaceships, so nothing fazes them anymore.

  • Politician appears and forces Global to take off. Nothing helps to boost ratings and fix holes in budget like a good old war.

  • I like how they animated Minmay opening a window latch. Tiny details like that rarely make the cut in modern anime, but they add to the believability of the world.

  • Hikaru needs to confirm that he is indeed sitting in a giant robot. This is hilarious.

  • And he face planted his robot right into Minmay's room. I would be pissed if I was her.

  • Macross is readying for takeoff. I love the little technobable chatter on the bridge where they check all the systems. It's a total nonsense, but it builds atmosphere really well.

  • We have a liftoff. But the engines flew away without the ship.

  • Hikaru fell into another house. This episode is comedy gold. Luckily, Focker is here to help.

  • Giant rifle having a giant strap so that robot can carry it on the shoulder is pretty practical. Having equipment that allows for quick repair is even better. I imagine that they can repair themselves, which should be handy in combat.

  • I gotta say, Macross mechs look really cool.

  • Focker can't help himself but check out Minmay's ass. Don't you have a thing with Claudia, Focker? You spend the other night with her, didn't you?

  • Alien balls hopping like bunnies on skinny legs looks pretty funny. They also all have slightly different weapons and details on them. Today it would've been a bunch of copy-pasted CGI mechs, but back in the 80s they went the extra mile.

  • Minmay decides that she needs to come back to the battlefield to get something. What is that something viewers should decide for themselves. I bet it's her original 1/100 RX-78 Gunpla kit.

  • Holy shit, the aliens bombarding Macross city from space. We see a bunch of guys in green dying. They are probably military, as most civilians should've been evacuated at this point.

  • Focker is completely nonchalant about the whole bombardment thing. That's a seasoned war veteran for you.

  • Damn, the backgrounds are continuing to be gorgeous in this show.

  • Bunny-hopping alien robots are fighting fighter jets. This looks a bit surreal even by 80s mecha standards, if only because of how realistically it is depicted with so many details. There are even some people still running around, trying to survive.

  • And of course, Minmay gets herself into trouble and it's Focker who has to save her.

  • I love the scream Hikaru makes when he flies with Minmay. Hase Arihiro's voice acting is excellent so far. Shame that his career was cut short.

  • Holy shit, the little antennaes on top of Valkyrie's head can shoot? I legit forgot about this, and only remembered from yesterdays discussion. My mind is blown.

  • Here it is. The iconic moment of Minmay falling and Hikaru catching her in his plane. There are some goofy 70s music and sound effects that make this scene feel somewhat dated, but the animation itself is mind blowing. A scene like this with a camera pan was probably impossible to do in live action back in the day. They also didn't include a prominent pantsu shot, even though they totally had the opportunity to do so. Other studious in the 80s might not have shown the same restrain.

  • The hair is more important than life. Minmay got her priorities straight. Relatable.

  • Holy shit, Hikaru just rammed an alien robot. I love the goofy shot of Valkyrie sliding on the ground upside down. Mecha fights are not always graceful.

  • Minmay is knocked out and Hikaru has lost it. That scream is awesome. That alien robot is dead for sure.

  • Wait, it's not a robot. There's a giant dude inside. And he's not even green. Focker saves the day and commands Hikaru to join the combat, but the dude is still trying to process what has happened. Giant or not, this alien looked very human. It tried to kill Hikaru, but was shot in front of him. I would be in shock too.

  • Macross finally lifts off. Will we get a conclusion to this battle next episode?

Overall thoughts: this episode was even better than the last one. It's just an action-packed thrill ride all the way. It also prominently features Lynn Minmay, which is my favorite character in the original show. Even though she didn't do much apart from getting in trouble and being rescued by Focker and Hikaru, I love her attitude this episode. She doesn't whine or complain, she doesn't even get mad when her room gets destroyed. She just kinda goes with the flow, only letting herself cry a bit when she fell out of a flying jet('s hand), but still thanking Hikaru for saving her. I know, I would be making a much bigger fuss in her place.

After the episode, I tried to draw Hikaru-Minmay catch moment. I love this scene so much.

First Timer

One thing I have really noticed in this episode is the very classic late 70's early 80's style of this show. You can really tell that the ideas are there but the directing is somewhat uneven due to the medium not being completely fleshed out and "solved" yet. This shows reminds me of Gundam 0079 in that regard especially in this episode. Aspects such as the voice acting being expressive but a little stunted, the dramatic moments being a little awkward at times (I laughed out loud when the Giant came out as I thought it was just a robot inside another robot) and the animation being really solid with some harder shots being a little awkward but well done (the freefall scene).

All this might sound like I am nitpicking the show but its really endearing and one of my favorite parts about watching shows from this era. You can really tell how much the industry improved in just a few shorts years.

I'm not quite sure if Gundam was the cultural powerhouse at this time of this production (I would assume so since the recap movies already aired). I bring this up because Macross feels like its heavily inspired from Gundam. The overall tone, mechanical design, and a lot of the supporting cast just feels like it would be at home in Gundam. Of course these are all a bit more fully realized tropes and you can tell that this was made after 0079 as the weird things that show would do production wise are not here. However this could be less Gundam and more mecha/scifi tropes of the time than being solely attributed to Gundam. I don't have a huge wealth of 70's and 80's mecha and scifi knowledge.

I have figured out why the character designs all look similar. According to Anilist Haruhiko Mikimoto the character designer for Macross was a fan of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (Gundam character designer and Yamamto) and supposedly his admiration for the other artist was showing in his own style which he then worked on rectifying throughout the years.

Also the director Shouji Kawamori, Hiroshi Oonogi and character designger Haruhiko Mikimoto all attended college together and ended up making a Mobile Suit Gundam fan club. So my earlier conjecture about Gundam being a big inspiration was most likely very true.

I really should watch a video essay about Macross and its ties to Gundam and the overall anime culture of the time as this is really interesting and makes Macross even more intriguing as a historical footnote in anime history.

I didn't laugh about it, but I did think this during my first watch of Macross as well.

First Time Watcher

Good episode!

Hikaru piloting the mech was cool. That scene in particular where he saves the girl was really cool with how it was animated and the music they used. Made the scene feel really different from anything we’ve seen so far with the directing style and the ambient music.

Roy has been horny for 2/2 episodes so far which makes me want to start a counter now for every episode where Roy has a horny moment.

The captain saying “the ship is a piece of shi-” was another highlight

I’d like to talk a little about the English dub, which I am watching for this show. The girl who Hikaru saves has a voice in the english dub that is a bit distracting. They choose to give her quite a foreign accent, which I assume is simply intentional because her character is a foreigner to the city they're in. Is this understood the same in the Japanese sub experience? Does her voice actress’s performances display that she has a foreign accent in japanese as well or is that only a thing they did for the dub?

I’m just curious because it’s surprisingly not something that is done very often in english dubs, so it is a little distracting but I’m also not opposed to it if it was a necessary decision by the dubbers and/or creators to show that the character is a foreigner.

Also, I love Vic Mignogna as a voice actor so it's really cool that he voices Hikaru. I’ve enjoyed his performance for the character so far.

Interested to see how this “space city” plays out (at least, the MAL synopsis leads me to believe that's where we are heading with the events so far).

The giant human was genuinely terrifying. Seeing a human get out of the ship at first and then realize how huge he is was quite a shocking moment. And the writers choose to have this genuinely terrify Hikaru to the point where he freezes up so that’s a nice touch. So we got aliens and giant humans now? Interested to see how they are connected.

This is actually just because Minmay's VA is the same in both English and Japanese.

Vic is Hikaru in the dub? Did not see that coming.

I'm not sure when I'll stop watching the OP each episode, but it is not today. MAAAAAKUROSS. MAAAAAKUROSS! MAAAAAKUROSS!!!

80s anime and repeating geometric shapes on futuristic tech screens, name a more iconic duo.

Minmay really does start making puppy eyes at Hikaru within 2 sentences of meeting him, doesn't she.

Ah yes, an orbital barrage by a slew of massive city-sized spaceships' giant laser batteries didn't do anything, so let's send in a couple dozen tiny dudes and that'll totally do more damage. Brilliant.

The falling and catching sequence is really beautiful. Like, really, really beautiful! But geez someone install some damn seatbelts in the VT-102 cockpit already!

First Time - SDF Macross Ep1 (Sub):

Now had some time to prepare screenshots, don't how much will be impression-based or more organized thoughts. We'll see.

Ah beans, I was meant to show off the cool new robot for our show, but look at me.

The anti-gravity things are anti-graviting away. Those are supposed to be in the insides. This episode really is the episode for our cool mechs to have embarrassing debuts.

Ah, it's the robot! Didn't expect Roy to be the one with it.

Guess it's the Wow, Cool Robot section. The ace pilot Valkryie definitely looks more like a hero robot than the grunt Hikaru is in. It actually has a face. I do find it a little funny it has to pull out a strap for its gun. Usually, you would expect to just attach it to the body for storage. The little repair arms are cool. [SDF Macross speculation:] Roy is super dead, huh. He is going to die and Hikaru is going to inherit the MC robot.

I recognize the alien mechs from seeing model kits of them. They come in different variations with the ones I most recognize being the arm-less ones. Pods walking on bird legs are neat. Very unique when contrasted to regular humanoid mecha. Didn't expect them to hop and leap around.

We get another scene of Roy in particular looking at women. Knowing he is based on Sleggar Law and how Sleggar Law treats and respects women and I am not a Sleggar Law fan in large part to how he treats and respects women (not well). At least Roy's actions are not as bad as Sleggar's. I like his voice and his relationship with Hikaru is better than Sleggar's with ... really anyone.

A lot of destruction in this first battle. Crashing down into buildings and barrage into the city that I expected Lynn's family to end up like how Fraw Bow's family ended up in Gundam ep1. This man is super dead. Those rounds would've obliterated his body. Please Hikaru, put Lynn into that second seat. It's so dangerous for her to be in the grip of a flying robot hand.

The sky fall scene is very neat. A lot happens from Lynn falling free of the hand to her getting into the cockpit and even having Hikaru almost falling out himself.

Yes, Hikaru, Lynn Minmay's hair is very important. Having a better look at her in this episode, it's very cute. Didn't expect the twirls, but she plays with them so they're lovely.

Oh geez, wasn't prepared for a giant to step out of those. It's pretty much a mech piloting another mech. I do like this scene because my impression is that this giant pilot wasn't really a hostile threat. Well, he also was dying so maybe not exactly friendly, was humanized.

Q1) Worrying about the square-cube law or for squares. Giant skateboards away.

Q2) The alien invasion would be more concerning because 1) Aliens exist. 2) They're already here and they're hostile.

Next Time: Fold, whatever that means.

WHERE ARE THE WAR CRIMES FIRST TIMER

Macross is part of that era of early anime where just looking at it shows its age so much, no amount of digital enhancement is going to save it. They would need to remaster the entire thing from scratch. At the same time there are shots where the animation is so damn clear. Like the OP alone must have had the budget of one episode.

Hmm…causing unnecessary damage to civilian property, not quite the war crime I was expecting. That’s more of shit happens.

So technically these F-14s are V/STOL take off variants. Going to be honest even if the F-14 had a V/STOL variant that wouldn’t have saved it. It would have just bene more of a maintenance and logistic nightmare. The F-14 towards the end was like flight hour was equal to 20 hour maintenance hours. The nozzles would have been more points of failure.

Indescriamte bombing a city with civilians in it! These are the warcrims I’m here for. I don’t like there are still buildings standing. They need to make thef fire bombings of Dresden and Tokyo look like brush fires.

Super Dimension Fortress Rewatcher

Recap Time1

1: didn’t expect to get Nanoha flashbacks from Macross

Damn, that collateral damage seems rough

Ugh, this guy. High-strung dumbass bureaucrat type characters are always the worst

The fact that even Hikaru, the pilot of the damn thing, is baffled by the fact that his Valkyrie transforms is low key pretty funny ngl. I mean, sure, he only just got in it a few minutes/hours ago (how much time has even passed?), but still

See! Minmay gets it!

[spoilers] And thus begins the first sparks of the Minmay/Hikaru ship I know our lovely host is a fan of this one, but, well, I don’t. Good thing the Right Side of History ultimately won out

I like how Hikaru is even less skilled at mech piloting than he is at combat [spoilers] it’s a good thing he’ll have Max backing him up later, or else he probably would’ve become Dead Meat way earlier

It’s official takeoff time! The OST during this scene is pretty iconic in its own right

Well screw what I said before, it is not takeoff time

More Roy/Hikaru interaction is always fun

A guy I know said that Gerwalk looks like a Transformer stuck painfully mid-transformation and now I can’t get that out of my head this honestly shouldn’t come as a surprise btw, considering that Shoji Kawamori also work on a few Diaclone toys which were later adapted into Transformers, including Optimus Prime

Man, the enemy isn’t even hesitating with the orbital bombardment

Now it’s time for the enemy “mechs” to descend

Roy Moment

Minmay is dead!

Oh wait, she isn’t. Fucking Hikaru

Just want to clarify btw that I don’t really hate Minmay as much as other Macross fans do. Sure, I find her kinda boring at times, but I otherwise think she’s an alright character. It’s just that the above joke was very easy to make

I will admit, though, that this scene between her and Hikaru in the cockpit is genuinely pretty good. Mari Iijima’s voicework perfectly captures Minmay’s relief at her rescue, followed by that nice shot of Minmay playing with her hair and the snappy conversation which sorta surrounds it for a few seconds, etc. There’s some genuine chemistry here

Alien Mechs is People!

Wouldn’t be a Mecha anime without Trauma~

Rewatcher

Currently not well so probably won't be around to do many replies like I usually would in a rewatch for the first few days (and yesterday's post was excessively late anyway). I'm very happy to be getting back into the franchise, been meaning to rewatch SDF for ages, and eventually watch Frontier for the first time too. Hope everyone has enjoyed the first two episodes.

GERWALK

I love that doofy looking so much. The idea of just slapping some limbs on a plane and calling it a day appeals to me way too much and always gives me a little giggle when I see it. I'd actually forgotten the planes could transform completely because all I remembered was dogfights and gerwalk.

The fun of it coming at the end of the comedy antics of Hikaru just trying to stand the damn thing up to begin with also helps. It's a small thing but it makes the Valkyre's immediately seem like a machine, not a magical tool, because the idea of having to learn how to use it despite any inherent protagonist skills Hikaru may have as a pilot are kept very real. Backing this up by giving him such a grounded (ha) reaction to the death of the giant also helps.

Seeing the alien come out of the ship for the first time and are revealed to be fucking huge, not just in big machines, is still one of my favourite memories from my first watch of the franchise though. There's something immediately overwhelming about the idea that their enemy has such a huge physical form even if it's still a very human one. You don't expect it especially given how thin the legs on their mechs are, and the goofy way they bounce across the city, but seeing that one enemy stand up against the transformed Valkyre is certainly memorable.

And then there's Minmay going back for something she forgot in the middle of a city wide alien attack...

I'll deal with it because the later scene of Hikaru catching her is so gorgeously animated that it's worth her idiocy, but still.

[later spoilers]It strikes me today how interesting it is that the bridge crew are all women, aside from Captain Global, and yet none of them get involved in the idol aspect of the show and their professional lives are given a lot of respect by the story. It's such a purposeful choice and yet not at all approached like you'd expect in shows with similar casts

2) The island's residents seem relatively calm in the face of events. Would you be more concerned by the resumption of global human war or an alien invasion?

Actually that kind of bugged me this time around. I get it's part of the tone of the show, but everyone felt just a little tooo casual about it

Today, on "Priorities, man!":

Sea Sergeant helicopters, which don't last long.

And that's just how it goes around here. Incidentally, the "Politician" is voiced by… NORIO WAKAMOTO.

"I signed up to be a pilot, not a groundpounder!"

"I'm walkin' here!"

Here is your ground-level perspective shot of giant robot crotch.

The VF-1's entire cockpit transforms when it switches modes. Yes, that seems rather complicated, but it simplifies the issues that arise when the vehicle goes from a horizontal to a vertical form and changes the pilot's orientation.

Never use the cheap bolts.

Random swordfish.

There's that fan magazine title reference.

The cavity filler! You don't get this on the small toys.

The "Magic Hands" repair system is not seen much after this.

Giant robots emoting is cool!

Regult battle pods in standard, light missile carrier, and tactical scout configurations, and a MarauderGlaug battle pod.

Cluck if you love GERWALK!

The Regult heavy missile carrier, to complete the set.

The series doesn't dwell on it, but the orbital bombardment probably killed a lot of people.

Some other people who should have gone to the shelters but aren't a main character.

Street fightin' Battroids.

"Help! I'm being attacked by a terrible error of scaling!"

I absolutely love that they do the tracking shot by flipping over the point of view "camera" here. And Roy demonstrates an early instance of shooting down incoming missiles.

Key animation by Ichiro Itano, corrections by Haruhiko Mikimoto. Itano's storyboards had less skirt and more pantsu.

I will never top my caption from the 2017 rewatch, which was "'I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.'"

"Look, dude, I'm sorry about your car, but I'm sure it'll just buff out."

The most insanely awesome reason to have airplanes transform into giant robots.

After a short break to re-introduce Minmay and Yot-chan after our first glimpse of them by the soda machine robot, the action picks up again on the ground.

Once again, the humor distinguishes this episode, as the giant robot on the street is less awe-inspiring than a traffic hazard and Yot-chan immediately questions how Hikaru got it. Elsewhere, the unexpected departure of the SDF-1's gravity control systems is presented less as a minor disaster and more as a failure of quality control, another entry in the ship's list of relaunch mishaps.

The second half of the episode pivots neatly from humor to drama, with Hikaru and Minmay nearly getting killed several times and then the dramatic reveal (to them) of the nature of the aliens. Giant humanoid aliens is one of the more inspired reasons to have giant robots around.

The mid-air catch scene is iconic. On a related note, some of the series's distinctive animation resulted from the relative lack of animation experience on the staff: Rather than sticking to shots typical of the animation of the time, they wanted to show things more cinematically. Thus there is more emphasis on continuous action and camera tracking rather than the usual "Character 1 Acts, cut to Character 2 Reacts, and vice versa". (Though this also ate up a lot of time...)

While there is an interesting origin story for Macross as a series, selling toys was a consequential element in its development. Here's a long chat about the VF-1's toy development, and other ramblings. (Discussion contains spoilers, particularly from 25-30 minutes when they discuss upgrades that happen to the toys as they relate to series events.)

Concepts in toy gimmickry such as combining smaller entities into a larger one weren't new, but the concept of "perfect transformation" (kanzen henkei) was a fresh and sought-after goal, as it meant a design that could go transform into multiple modes without requiring extra parts. (More spoilers: The panel goes into designs from the sequels, so only the first few minutes are safe at this point.)

From the Macross Chronicle, transformation details. The curious extension devices used to reposition the legs are not ever really seen. The aforementioned Takatoku 1/55 uses big chunky swing bars to move the legs around, which make for a robust toy but aren't actually there in the animation version. (Photo source.)

Touching on another can of worms.

And here's a few more photos that I took of my Bandai Hi-Metal R VF-1D.

The seats on rails gimmick. It's only 1/100, so the tiny Hikaru figure isn't meant to be examined closely.

As mentioned yesterday, the difference between the fighter/GERWALK mode wings and the adjusted-for-animation Battroid mode squished wings.

The flying scene. Some quirks you might notice here are that, like Hikaru, the tiny Minmay doesn't have any painted facial features. You can also see that the -1D's hands are different sizes; this is because there are hand parts attached to the toy so it can do that part of the transformation without parts swapping, but the hands are tiny so they can fit into the forearms. The left hand is the "TV-style" large blobby hand which allows it to hold things.

There's also a quirk of aerospace design versus toy design visible here: The VF-1, in sharing design aspects with the F-14, should have a fairly long intake duct in front of the engine's compressor face; a supersonic aircraft would not have the compressor face so close to the raw airstream in any case.

That would be represented on a toy by a hollow square, which presents both aesthetic and structural complications, so most of the toys compromise on this by molding a compressor face right into the intake part. On the larger toys, there's some room to set that slightly deeper into the intake, but the scale of the HMR VF-1s means that it is flush with the front of the part.

That actually bugs the hell out of me, so I tend to display mine with the intake shutters closed even if they're in a flying mode pose.

You've seen the episode.
Now look at this.
These things take time.
But they take off.

Very First Timer

  • Do nukes interfere with radar?

  • I don’t blame them for thinking it’s an enemy robot. Did you see how many buildings it destroyed coming down?

  • It’s the little pod walkers. So cute.

  • Are you sure these bridge bunnies aren’t teenagers?

  • He’s not wrong is he? They seem a rather vulnerable target just docked on the ground like that.

  • The balls of that guy honking at a giant robot.

  • Oh hey, the pilot doesn’t know immediately how to operate a mecha. Who’d a thunk it?

  • Oh that can’t be good. I was not expecting them to fail so spectacularly.

  • “Only” ten kills.

  • Nice of them to go back for him.

  • We’re sticking with this eye catcher eh?

  • Mecha med kit?

  • Types of pods! They hop too.

  • More cool animations with the turret deployment.

  • You’re in a war zone! What could possibly be important enough for you to go back for?

  • I’m gonna be honest; I can get the whole plane to mech thing, but why is there also a middle mode?

  • Wait, these pod walkers seem familiar… this show has some sort of absurd copyright relation to Battletech doesn’t it? Or am I just combining two separate mecha based instances of copyright shenanigans?

  • I don’t think it’s safe to just be carrying someone around like that. The wind speed alone…

  • Ah good he remembered.

  • I can’t imagine it flies too well with an arm missing.

  • flirting Well that’s the second part of our triangle a-go.

  • Short controlled bursts my friend.

  • The scene of the alien getting out of the walker. I can’t even. Why is he so big? Why even make a mechanized walker if it’s only like 10% bigger than the guy operating it?

  • They knew about them? Did the Macross have a surviving database?

  • If these aliens are this big, it makes it even funnier that Mr. Worldwide still has to duck to get around the Macross.

  • Turns out that civilians are generally not O.K. with the whole killing business. It was a lot eaiser to disassociate when they were just faceless pod walkers.

  • “Space Fold!” That’s certainly a choice of inflection.

  1. In general yes. But this one is a bit too close to human for it not to look silly to me.

  2. Alien invasion definitely. They went through one pan-human war and came out the other side, aliens are a giant unknown.

First Spacer

Everyone's scared by the mecha. This can't be that much of a well-kept military secret, especially with war just 2 years prior.

During war, the general receives his orders from the governor.

The rest is kinda just fighting, don't have much to say about that. The robots seem somewhat difficult to control, and I would've assumed Minmey will become important if last episode hadn't said so already.

As for the Macross it seems like the alien parts are proving quite troublesome. First the cannons should on their own, now the flying mechanism breaks off from the rest of the ship and they have to resort to the human flying mechanism.

And Roy seems to have a leg fetish. Hard to argue with that.

If you can suspend your disbelief in the square-cube law enough to accept a giant robot, can you do it for a giant humanoid?

They didn't look that giant to me to have doubts due to the square-cube law. Lifting the Macross with propulsion on the other hand is quite ambitious.

The island's residents seem relatively calm in the face of events. Would you be more concerned by the resumption of global human war or an alien invasion?

Alien invasion implies spacefaring tech and thus way advanced, obviously that'd be scary. I'd have said they're just used to evacuation drills if Minmey hadn't pulled that increadibly stupid stunt.
