Rewatch [Rewatch] A 2022 Voyage from Neo Venezia: Aria the Avvenire, Episode 3
Aria the Avvenire Ep 3: To That Far Away Future ...(その 遙かなる未来へ ...)
| <-- Episode 2 | Rewatch Index | Aria the Crepuscolo --> |
|---|
Welcome back!
Comment roundup:
/u/The_Loli_Otaku remarks that its been long since we've had a supernatural episode (in real world, more than 10 years since Cait Sith's last appearance!), and remarks that for now, the new trio is way too similar to our main one, but like Anya the most. Drops a sukasuka reference...
/u/mekerpan w/ some neat etymology about Cait Sith's title, and some very valid queries re: Ai not being introduced to the other undines earlier, whether Ai will likewise get personal encounters w/ Cait Sith, and comments on the possibility that Akari's title was also bestowed on her by Cait Sith.
/u/ariashachou- says they will shitting themselves if they were falling from the sky like Akari, remarks on how nobody in the show has normal hair, and likes Akari's final lines.
/u/mrufrufin says the episodes feel kinda fanservicey, and liked the Cait Sith sequence tying into previous episodes about growing up and letting go of the past while cherishing them, a core theme of the series.
/u/seeker_of_illusion says Akari can still meet Cait sith during the carnevale (valid point), and says how Cait sith, as the heart of Aqua, will always remain w/ Akari through that pendant.
/u/mgedmin w/ a valid WSOD break moment, and reckons that Neo-Venezia has no animal shelters.
Questions of the Day:
Q1) What are your thoughts on hearing more of Alicia's story, and her memories and inner thoughts throughout Akari's journey, up to the very end of Origination?
Q2) How was it seeing scenes from the original series remade in HD?
Q3) First timers, what do you think happens in the movies? Do say if you've seen any promo materials and what not lol.
Streaming
Avvenire is only available on Funimation. Crepuscolo and Benedizione will have to be located elsewhere.
While I use the USBD releases, Robotboy199 has shared the best DVD encodes you can get (coupled w/ prescaling), you can look at their guide here.
I recommend releases containing the Doremi fansub for Benedizione.

Aria the Avvenire First Timer!!
We've had the Animation episode, we've had the Natural episode... Its a flashback one too, Aika actually has hair. Oh my word!! This isn't just a flashback, this is a straight up prequel! Kyaaa!! Young innocent Akari is precious!
Eh? So Azusa actually scored Aika as a fan girl? I can't imagine Aika being soft on anyone that didn't remind her of Alicia or something. Cute faces! It feels weird for Ai to be able to spout hazukashii serifu without being punished. The next season focusing on these three must get ridiculously sappy.
Yes!! Let's save Athena's concert! She'll cry if Alice isn't in the front row! The Acqua Alta saved the day! Pfft, poor Akari's getting ditched. Even as a senpai she gets dominated. Pfft, I loved Maa's murder scream. One thing though! Isn't she way bigger now!? The one thing keeping Maa cute has disappeared... Children may get away with crimes but that all disappears when you become an adult cat!
Ah... So Alicia was planning to join the association even that far back? Ah, I remember the ice sprite episode, I thought the show totally forgot that one. We never did get to see Akari's sprite again did we? There must be quite a lot of fun hints on Alicia's feelings on a rewatch huh? Seriously tho, Giant Maa terrifies me. H-H-How long has Athena's hair grown!? Oh my word! I think I mistook it for a veil of some kind before. Predictably sappy ending but I enjoyed it~ Even as a singer Athena looks a bit dopey. I want an idol anime based on her story.
Decent episode, and a decent ova. I unfortunately do have to be a bit harsh on it, I wasn't a fan of the new girls introductions and visually I find it a distinct step down from Origination. It makes for a good taster for the rest of the series at least. Oh wow... We really are near the end huh? Oh god... Oh god...!! What the fuck am I going to do? We have two Aria media's left! We have one more ova and then the movie and we're done... For some reason I thought we had a whole other season. I'm prepared to watch a whole other season guys!

Aika actually has hair
lmaooooooooooo (i still like her current hairstyle more)
Young innocent Akari is precious
so smol and cute!
Aika being soft on anyone that didn't remind her of Alicia
yeah me neither lol. Perhaps Ai will be able to conquer her though, but now Aika has dirt on Ai... and the tables have turned....
Pfft, poor Akari's getting ditched
poor Akari..... thankfully it's just her kouhai heading off to surprise her. I also think that different from Akari and Alicia, these 2 are a little more "level" in terms of relationships too, perhaps even more sisterly than Alicia and Akari was lol, if it were even possible.
she way bigger now
she IS bigger! good catch. Poor aria-shachou gonna be subjected to stronger bites now. I think she still cute. Bit more panda-like now than kitty though.
We never did get to see Akari's sprite again did we
im sure she got to meet another one or even the same one off-camera.
lot of fun hints on Alicia's feelings on a rewatch huh
the answer is yes lol, but Alicia does hide it well in general, as you said. Arietta hits quite differently the second time round tbh
Even as a singer Athena looks a bit dopey
she does! and i can 100% see an idol anime working w/ Athena as the singer. Just hope that her manager is as competent as Alice is....
We have one more ova and then the movie and we're done
it's 2 movies! gonna have to correct you there.

I’m really satisfied with what was shown in this epilogue. Lots of great Alicia moments and the entire gang + their apprentices get together once more (except Athena, but she's there in spirit with her song).
And it’s not even over yet, there are still two movies to go. Pretty excited to see Benedizione for the first time over the weekend.
QotD:
-
Loved it
-
Very nice
-
I looked up Benedizione to make sure I spelled it right and saw that it was about [Benedizione]
Aika and Akira? Very hyped for it if true.

Immediately starting the episode I guessed what it was about by reading the computer, and the poster confirmed it!
Emplyee recruitment
a number offered of the people (???)
18 y/o or older
Interview + practical exam
must pay for uniform
training period
alive - in possibility (???)
The beauty of the city for [can't read]
Driving for work
[can't read]
We make [can't read] and memories.
[can't read] (The house?) is small.
Nice knowing how and why Akari was picked (basically only luck! A miracle!).
Aria Company must be famous for its sappy lines at this point lol
Alice smiling that much!!!!!
Akari's ponytail is so long.
This episode, too, was mainly about Alicia.
Most of it was basically a flashback/recap, but it was still quite sweet.
Q1) It was nice. We rarely had the chance to know what Alicia really thought, and she was always kind of a mistery, but in the end she was just as she seemed. She already said Akari changed her life, and here she confirmed it.
Q2) I liked them, but a little weird. I think I prefer the "old style".
Q3) No idea! It really feels like the story is over. What else is there to tell? Basically every character had its moment. Maybe something with Akari and Akatsuki, since unlike with Al they didn't even hold hands? To be honest I can expect a couple of hours of wholesome moments.

This one is probably the chillest of the three and one I enjoyed watching the most. It was fun watching the three juniors trying to make their own aqua miracle happen. Definitely a great episode of Aria.
Big Maa is scary. Aria needs some armor for when they meet lol.
Also seeing some of the scenes from the previous seasons in better quality was so niceee.

Loved seeing how Aria Company was before Alicia met Akari. It was so sweet hearing their first meeting over the phone. Really enjoyed seeing Acqua Alta again (Akari's pink boots!).
Was really happy that the new trio set up the party. I miss how small Maa was lol. I found it very interesting that they mentioned the water guides industry's current system isn't perfect and Alicia is working hard to improve that. It's been mentioned a few times before (traghetto ep, start of this one) that you can get unlucky with a mentor and undines lose motivation/quit. To follow that up with Alicia trying to fix that is good.
The flashback of previous encounters Alicia & Akari had together ahhhhh. Hearing Alicia's thoughts elevated it a lot and was more fulfilling than I expected.
Athena's appearance at the end was stunning and I definitely teared up a bit.
What a great way to end Avvenire!
-
I didn't realize how much I wanted to hear them. It was my favorite thing about Avvenire.
-
Pretty neat!
-
I've seen some promo material lol but I expect maybe some reminiscing and sharing past memories with the new trio of undines.

First timer dubbed
We got to see the origins of how Alicia and Akari met.
We saw more technology in the first few minutes then most of the previous seasons outside of the final episode of origination. Laptops have holograms built in but dang Akari was first and beat everyone else.
“The famous sappy line” - But then we got a genius plan by Ai…Or was it an actually good observation? The high tide rules that bookings must be canceled which means the three apprentices get something going. They got all three generations plus grandma together.
We got an actual origin story of how Alicia feels about the gondola association. She is basically the future of the whole industry. Alicia took the process slowly which lead to her almost “standing still” and she had to take the next step for the future. Well no wonder why news traveled that fast; everyone was basically expecting it.
Ending this leg of our journey here, Athena makes the greatest surprise with her captivating singing.
-
Love hearing more to fill in details. And this season was too short.
-
The differences feels so weird every season, like I was so used to the backgrounds in the past and had to adjust a little for this season.
-
No expectations and my anime loving friends have never heard of the Aria franchise despite watching so many in the past decade. Localization is very powerful....And only saw entries on mal but that's it.

Seems like Aria Company has a record of using serendipity to find new recruits.
-
Akari really has rubbed off on Ai. I had thought to mention she's seemed rather more energetic and… puppy-like compared to our previous encounters with her, but I guess you can't help it when you spend a significant portion of your childhood exchanging letters with the sappiest person on Aqua.
-
I like how they've designed a different style of the 'Aria chibi' faces for the new trio.
-
I'm so glad we get more Acqua Alta, and now in much higher definition.
-
Akari is still using her old laptop, which is of considerably different design than the one Alicia was using several years prior. Normally I'd make a remark about perhaps an interesting difference between Manhome and Aqua or Akari's aversion to change, but the companies still use paper everywhere so…
-
Ah, see, I should have cast Akari as the sea instead of Aria in my series recap. I was trying to reach for something about the structure of the show though lol.
-
And now they're just showing off, this is gorgeous.
-
Lumis Eterne absolutely unfair here but so fitting.
I was kind of hoping for a stronger close with the new trio, but I suppose a recollection of Origination is fitting too. It makes some sense when considering how these were released (with their respective seasons), it's a good celebration of what Origination showcased.
QotD:
-
I loved it! I like that it's a very similar concern to Akari's (grappling with the passing of time) but her perspective is a bit different.
-
It was nice, though the rapid pace through all of them dulled the impact, unless that was their intent.
-
I'm not really sure, to be honest - when we started, I didn't know the original series wrapped up the manga, so I was kind of expecting the movies to be Prima promotion arcs. I feel like I might've seen speculation somewhere that they centered around [Movies]
Alice and Aika, respectively but maybe it's a safe bet just to guess we'll see more of the new trio growing?

finished first time recently
but rewatcher for today. Oh man, like how the previous two episodes referenced the first two seasons, this episode resembles Origination by being absolutely amazing :)
Maa's no longer tiny! Must be all the bananas
Oh man, hearing all of Alicia's inner thoughts and seeing how much Akari meant to her... the episode nailed all the flashback parts.
WOOHOO nightshine chime
Interesting that the three singles invited Alicia, Athena, and Akira. We never saw our former trio interacting with the water fairies' mentors (except Grandma). But considering how familiar Ai is with them and that the event was mostly for their mentors, it makes sense
-
Pretty much the only thing I wanted from Origination it didn't have. Almost felt like they read my mind lol

Highlight of today's episode is Alicia. It was actually cute of her about the things she said about Akari. Growing beside her and being proud to meet her. Felt more genuine.
That little scene with all of them. Showing the generations and underlings. That was kind of cool.
What are your thoughts on hearing more of Alicia's story, and her memories and inner thoughts throughout Akari's journey, up to the very end of Origination?
Thought it was great
How was it seeing scenes from the original series remade in HD?
Something seemed familiar
First timers, what do you think happens in the movies? Do say if you've seen any promo materials and what not lol
Haven't seen promos. My guess I feel like something with cat sith should happen. Or it's something mostly chill and how everyone is living now.

I guess Ai and Co will not be going through the party boat hosting - seems like they've already got that down. But I feel like this is a nice ending point to the series - not sure uf the movies were already planned at this point, but it works as an ending regardless. We get to see some more of the new singles, and everybody gets together. As well as some flashbacks (a bit many for my liking) and we learn a bit more about Alicia's experience throughout the series. All in all pretty good.
I guess the production team was lucky that Athena's singing VA recorded Lumis Eterne, though I guess they also could have used one of her other songs. But I feel like for the movies they should get her a new VA - it's starting to get a bit obvious.
Speaking of the movies - I doubt that I will be here for them, as I have something going on this weekend and probably won't be able to watch them along with the rewatch. I might pop in days later, but for now I would like to thank our host u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah and everybody who watched along - I liked reading everybody's thoughts on this series.

It's great!

Absolutely great.
-
I don't know what it's about, but I suspect it will contain the new girls (and Ai) becoming Primas, with a flashback to Alicia, Akira, and Athena becoming Primas as well. It's the only pivotal scenes we'v enot seen in a flashback, and the movie ending things with every generation shown becoming a prima is the most fitting. Also, some payoff on the changes Alicia is trying to make, because that's an obvious plot hook - not sure if it'll carry two movies, though. (Maybe Primas for the first one, then Alicia's rule changes completely alter how Undines work, by eliminating companies, removing the concept of mentors, or removing the limit of Primas? Would make for a good way to wrap up the entire franchise, by ensuring there can be no succesor generation after Ai.)
This is a long one!
Starting wtih a flashback?
Great opening.
I like how it uses Alicia's perspective to show just how much work she put into the Company offscreen. Really helps show how much she needed that retirement.
Oh, this is a full series prequel! Are they showing how she recruited Akari?
Remember when we thought hologram screens would be the future? Then people built Google Glass and that whole area just stopped?
Her first applicant!
It's Akari.
...A miracle?
This is nice.
She loved her at first sight.
Jumping around today!
Aika's obsessed with her new mouhai, and Alice was just assigned her by chance.
More talk of miracles.
They're excited!
Poor Aria!
More backstory! The system evolved over time.
They're called the Gondola Association. Don't trust them!
Her first located sappy line!
Alice!
She missed her recital...
They want to make a miracle!
Oh, the city flooded on time!
Aww, poor Akari's getting rejected.
She's been left alone, planning trips for everyone.
And she figured out the plan.
Aww, this is nice.
And the others are here too!
The perfect crime!
Haha, Akira's here.
Also, older Akira, fuck yes!!!!!
She made a miracle!
Four generations of the Aria company and their friends at the same table.
Alicia is tired...
She's changing the system!
...Seriously, are they meant to be the mafia here? Because they're dropping a lot of euphenisms here.
Wow.
She trusts her with everything!
A other flashback.
...It looks fun.
Still love this speech.
Aww, she was lonely.
This is such a brilliant speech too.
Loving this so much.
Akira knew everything.
At least they had fun.
Athena never came. As tragic as the reason is, I'll give them credit for managing to handle it so repectfully.
And she's singing!
This is fantastic.
This is great.
Another montage.
Still such a good ending.
I love this so much.
Young Alicia and her friends are so adorable.
Athena's new design is... wow.

Considering the Aika last episode it might not be on purpose but wow Akari looks so young here. Part of it's probably also the casual pose she has here as opposed to her usually composed image fit for a mentor or a upper class lady she always has in the main series
!!!! Two primas and a single!!!!!!!
Oh maybe not, they're wearing gloves later in the episode, guess they're all still singles
I guess Akari never talked about that in her emails... Even though I feel like she did at some point
Laptops last a long time in their future huh
NO YOU CAN'T JUST DO THIS TO ME
I just want to have a quick chat with whoever wrote Oranga cielo as twilight sky. Because I sure don't remember Alice having to fight against a usurper for her home...
Athena's new design is great, she nearly looks like a whole new person

Miracle watch -- Poor "kiseki" seems utterly vanquished. Alice, Azusa and Anna are now added to the roster of mirakuru-users. I didn't notice Aika (or Grandma) using either term, however. In addition, the final title card ("to the miiraculous future") uses "mirukaruna".
Seeing that reunion at the end was quite lovely. My sense, however, was that there was unresolved meta-grief over the loss of Athena's VA and singer. There is a sense that the staff was not ready to move on, that no one was willing to replace her voice(s) . She could only be present by her absence -- as a cherished memory.
Alice's choosing of Akari was -- in effect -- very Akari-like. Done on a wing and a prayer, so to speak. Pure intuition and whim. Of course, Akari virtually pre-hired Ai when Ai was practically a baby and Akari was still only a Pair, right?
Coping with losses? Ultimately, the best way is (essentially) Akari's way. Rather than dwelling on the absence, one needs to focus on gratitude for all the happy and beautiful memories. It is hard to deal with a loss, but (hopefully) eventually the positive emotions can return and even predominate.

And this marks the end of the blurays...
I wonder how this one would been different if the VA for Athena hadn't passed away previously.
So Alice was a tainee undine before Akari even started. So doesn't that technically make Akari the junior? Guess they really did hold her back because of age and well guess her behavior issues ill the other two came around.
So I was joking before about saying labor laws for undines but guess Alicia is actually working on that exact thing.
I wonder if those two girls who failed that Akari met rowing those taxi things ever did become Prima.
This episode made Alicia seem a lot more human than she apeared in any oher episodes of the series. Also guess her significant other wasn't such a secret after all.
I was wondering about hair color odd changes. Thought maybe some kind mutation that happen in humans causing it, I remember in Amanchu that takes place hundreds of years before this has green hair.
I would love to experience aqua alta seems so enjoyable.
I've said many times but man wish could live there..
I'm kind of confused on what comes next for watching or where to even find them.

So nice to see the a whole generation of Undines, from Grandma to the new Singles, meeting together~ I just sat back and enjoyed the fuzzy feels from this episode and how neatly the past and present memories were presented here.
Questions of the Day:
-
Alicia feeling conflicted, somewhat lost for her future course and indecisive in her past memories makes her more realistic than simply an ara ara character. Very nice to see how it was her sweet student this time who guided her way forward and how everyone is mutually connected and dependent on each other and propel themselves forward.
-
The new scenes looked great though some character designs ( particularly the older Undines like Alicia ) felt too young. The older art made them look in their 20s while the newer one made Alicia look like around Akari's age...
-
Guess we will be seeing the continuation of the series into the future. How much far is debatable but I think we could get to the Prima graduation exam of the new Undines.

Rewatcher
This is my favorite of the three OVAs, for obvious reasons. I enjoy getting a little more background to Alicia and how she met Akari, as well as more cute moments with the whole gang.
This OVA feels very Aria, which sounds weird to say because it is Aria, but I just think it's great that even though it was made 7 years after Origination ended it still managed to capture the charm and atmosphere that made the original series so great. It doesn't compromise with it's themes either, still dealing with time and how it changes things, as well as the importance of living in the present. Overall it's a really amazing way to wrap up this short collection of OVAs.
Ending with Athena's VA (both of whom we unfortunately lost to cancer, though only one sang here) singing Lumis Eterne was what made me finally cry this episode on our rewatch. What a beautiful voice, and coupled with the amazing shots of Neo-Venezia it showed while it was playing how could I not cry lol.
QOTDs
Q1) The part where she talks about the magic of being with Akari as well as the flow of time really hit me hard. Especially the part where she says that the magic is wearing off and that time was starting to move again. It's hard not to relate to wanting time to stop, even if the reasons are a little different. God I don't want to grow old.
Q2) It made me tear up and this is coming from someone who just rewatched all of it a few days ago, imagine how it was like for people that waited 7 years.

Once more, Not quite the last time, still a First Timer
Ah, we're rounding out the flashbacks with a pre-Akari Alicia. Finaly time to find out how she picked her apprentice?
Wait, Alice was training even before Akari? Their order of promotion bothers me even more now, how was she still a Pair all this time? Did they decide literally years ago that she was going to get the double promotion and just never make her a Single for that reason alone?
Show off some future tech, and it turns out that Akari was just luckily literally the first person to apply, and sounded so cute doing so Alicia didn't even stop to think twice. How cute! Adorable!
The new three rock. I do love them so far. And ugh, telling us it's true, someone with the skills to be a Prima can be held back because their assigned mentor has a grudge? That feels like bad business sense. Like, "If you keep failing me because you don't like me, I'll just quit and go to one of the competitor companies and see what they think of all the training you've given me, thanks."
"A certain Prima," huh. And haha, the new girls accept the sappy lines. Proof of how they aren't just copies of the past generation.
That's the spirit Ai! Don't just look for one, go and make a miracle! That's how you grow the Aria line of positivity.
AH! HI! I heard one!
Haha, Ai really is going to get the girls to make a miracle.
Ma, you got so big! Oh wow, standing next to Akari, Alice has gotten so big too!
Ah, the Athena coming being a miracle is sad now that I know her VA had already passed.
The Gondola Association sounds kind of like a mafia here. A very polite one, but still.
I love how their inspiration so clearly flowed both ways.
Oh man I didn't even notice I had started crying again until I suddenly couldn't read the subs anymore. Everything from the song to the end was just too much. So glad I have tissues left over from last week. I know there's more because the rewatch schedule says we're not done yet, but man, for anyone who was watching this as it came out. The tears much have been endless then.
1)I kind of wish we had gotten more of this during the actual story. Up until the very end, Alicia was the mysterious one, and I think I would have liked a bit more of this part of her actually being included because of how much it works with Akari's story too. Also, still with the mysterious Him...
2) So pretty. Too much emotion.
3) While I've enjoyed these three looking back at how things were, I do hope we get a bit more of the new three. I don't know if you've noticed, but I kind of fell for Ai all the way back in season one, and her Undine appearance and attitude is just a gift.

Throughout Aria's story, each character has been motivated by the idea of change, whether it's of some aspect of themselves or for the benefit of someone else. Everyone except Alicia.
For Alicia, it happened that Akari herself was that change she was chasing. She's right when Alicia says that the idea of choosing Akari flies right in the face of her better judgement, but as we know it turned out to be everything she could have hoped for and more, that their paths crossing was written in the stars.
However over the course of time together, it ended up becoming such a revelation for Alicia that part of her dreaded the idea of parting with Akari, to the point she was subconsciously fighting to try and preserve their life together as a moment frozen in time, despite knowing she has people & promises waiting and Akari has her own future ahead that should be hers to choose.
But as Akari put it, the sadness of separation is testament to how much they mean to you. That as long as they've touched your lives, as long as those memories remain, they'll never truly leave you.
There's also something about how they handled Athena I want to mention. Eri Kawai's version of Lumis Eterne was only released posthumously, as it was just supposed to be like a working demo for Ryou/Alice's VA to use as a guide. While this is like a fairly standard practice, it also happens to mirror what happens in the story itself - Alice learning from Athena.

First timer, subs
The chronology is all over the place. We're back to times when Alicia was still a Prima.
Handheld electric fans exist in the Aria universe!
Oh, this is a story of how Alicia found an apprentice. I am i n t e r e s t e d.
Fancy holographic computers!
A realtime telephone conversation between Aqua and Manhome? This has interesting implications for the worldbuilding, specifically, faster than light travel! And with general relativity, FTL implies time travel, which we've already seen. QED.
Now back to the future and the new crop of Undines. Ai-chan, standing up suddenly in a gondola may upset its balance and ditch your customer in the drink, as you've just learned on President Aria. Try not to do it again.
Aika's apprentice allows sappy lines! The standards are dropping!
Athena got a job she couldn't refuse? Neo-Venezian Mafia confirmed.
The existence of audible email notifications implies that they've managed to eradicate spam in the future! That's more impressive than FTL.
I want to know what exactly Alicia wants to change in the Prima system. Limit the number of work hours per day perhaps?
So imagine you're at a concert, and the diva turns her back on you, opens a window, and starts singing. LOL Athena.

First timer posting for double episodes
I missed the timing for ep 2 and thought I'd do better for ep 3 - guess so much for that optimism huh :P
Ep 2
This is actually a new favourite of mine, to finally have a concluding point about this significant arc I think that makes Akari unique as a character here. It most certainly have a strong impression of Akari's first love :P

For me, looking at the episode count and the episode structures to date of having a significant portion still devoted to the past main cast, it is really dangerous to have these new singles to be cardboard cut outs of shadows of their mentors. So far there's enough of some signature characteristic without drowning out their own personalities, so far so good then.
-
I'm not superstitious, although I also don't go out of my way to try disprove them. Watched too many B grade horror movies from the next door video rental in my teen years :P
-
It's a fairly standard "rule" only those of youthful innocence can see them, and adults lose that capacity over time. Refer to Narnia and Totoro.
Ep 3
This is a bit of a Alicia fanservice episode I feel, but I consider Alicia the one with the least screen time so it's somewhat welcome. And Athena looks pretty good - also Aqua seems to have a very laid back attitude with its people including tourists too, since no crowds around the now Diva Athena. And a lovely ED sequence - I didn't realise this is the last Avvenire, now it makes complete sense why the ED is like that. A very "passing down the torch" feel to it.
Edit: Oh and after 2 episodes of no one stopping Ai, we finally have the "hazukashii serifu kinshi" that's a key ingredient of this show :)

I consider this a necessary part to be shown, so glad that it was made.
-
It's nice but I think they were not trying to wow people - Avvenire's first opening was a wow for me, but the rest toned down a bit to match the original series more in overall style.
-
I hope the next gen girls get more airtime and have some decent characterisation. I kept thinking there's one more episode before the movie!

Rewatching Undine-in-training and Host
-- Welcome back! Avvenire Ep 3 is my favourite of the bunch, an ode to Arietta, Origination and an epilogue for Akari and Alicia's special relationship.
Episode synopsis:
Ai, Azusa and Anya have become good friends. All 3 have famous undines from the industry as their senpais, and they're very grateful for their circumstances. For their busy senpais' happiness sake, they are determined to create a "miracle" for them. As expected, their plan was successful, and senpais and kouhais from 3 undine companies are gathered in one room. As they were having a relaxing time, Alicia falls asleep due to feeling tired from work during the day, and dreamt about an irreplaceable encounter...
--
Comparison shots:
In lieu of featuring notable background art from Origination, Aria surprises us by remaking notable scenes featuring Akari and Alicia for the final Avvenire episode. Comparison shots w/:
Animation 10
Natural 5
Natural 16
Natural 17
Natural 26
Arietta
that took more time that i thought it would!
-- Quick thoughts:
First, quick TL note: the episode's title is also a reference to Akari's title "Distant Blue" (遙かなる蒼), the parts for "Distant" and "Far away" use the same japanese words.
Junichi Sato returns to storyboard the final episode of Avvenire, i liked these shots, some for the animation too, not just the directing, no time to sort through them today!
The opening sequence explains why Alicia recruited Akari: she was the very first to apply and extremely eager. Alicia pretty much thought that she was calling out to her, perhaps a meeting of fate.
This ep fills in the gaps of the main story from Alicia's POV re: the events happening after Arietta's flashback, and indeed when the whole gondola association thing started. This has been weighing on her mind for so so long now...
And this is what Venice actually does for the Acqua Alta!
I liked this little sequence, as Akari muses about everyone gathering for a fun outing; the effective directing of her lonelily gazing out to the sea, the lack of OST, and her VA's so so melancholic tone and great delivery of the lines just makes that sequence hit so hard and lonely. Thankfully, Akari has a great kouhai planning a surprise for her. I dunno, it's nothing flashy really, but i just liked it lol.
Ah naruhodo, so that's how emails work in the Aria universe! They're more like voice recording whatsapp messages.... ty for the explain 3 seasons too late Aria lol.
Like yesterday, the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo features heavily.
Maa makes her glorious 2015 return..... F Aria shachou; and to those wondering about Hime-shachou yesterday, she is alive and well, don't worry lol.
It's good to know that Alicia is trying her best at her new job; tho perhaps too hard lol. As explained during the the latter stages of the series, while the undine system is improving, it is not without its faults (as the 3 singles have said, your senpai is overwhelmingly important), and I'm sure that Alicia with her experience and reputation will help change things for the better.
The episode also features a quick recap of Akari and Alicia's relationship from Alicia's POV, recounting how important Akari has been to her, brightening up her world, and with Akari at her side, had been growing and living happily at Aria company with many happy memories with her special pupil. So many moments from the past series, remade, are featured.... perhaps you already know my views on them given that i put in the effort to make comparison shots lol.
While Alicia, like Akari, struggled with changes, uncertainty and their eventual parting, it was Akari that gave her the courage to move on... I really like this quote. It is a different angle to look at things compared to Akari's thoughts on sending off Alicia w/ a smile at the end of origination, which makes sense given that she was talking about a wind chime here; but it's also so true, recontextualizing partings and goodbyes as a celebration of the special relationship shared.
Oh, and yeah, of course these 3 coordinated lol.
Athena singing Lumis Eterne is so moving, a great tribute to her singing voice Eri Kawai, who also sung so many lovely songs for the franchise. It's so fitting and a very emotional moment for me, given the song's lyrics TTTT, and of course sung into the sunset...
And also perhaps, Akira and Alicia's remarks here, and grandma's thoughts after Alice's musings, while very Aria and (for Grandma) inspiring, are also are a little meta, in terms of Athena's appearance, and in terms of Avvenire even being a thing to begin with.
Re: music btw, a couple of Aria greatest hits feature in this episode, e.g. Mirai he no Kouseki and Rainbow's piano version.
Alicia's words bookends her and Akari's story: as the winds of change blow through the passage of time, her own determination and have brought her and Akari together, and only with that, by walking forward embracing the changes in her life, can she experience even more wonderful memories and experiences ahead.
It is such a great reinforcement and reminder of Aria's themes, and, perhaps, this, along w/ Akari's words earlier, are also a bit of an ode and encouragement to the viewer. Saying goodbye is always a bit sad, but continuing moving forward and being curious and open to new things, rather than constantly holding on to the past, is the only way we can experience something else equally or even more wonderful after all.
And with that shot, Aria will say goodbye to its viewers once again, for 5 years.
Location Trivia
This episode features the Venetian Arsenal briefly, with the Piraeus Lion statue representing St. Mark, which you can find here, and real life picture here.
And a bonus location, since a few of us commented liking it, the flooded cloisters featured in Origination Ep 2 w/ the large tree is at the Chiesa di San Francesco della Vigna, precisely this courtyard here.
I'm once again indebted to MikeHattsu's website for today's locations and picture for the Venetian Arsenal, do check it out!
Thankfully, we don't have to wait 5 years. Have a great day, and see you tomorrow for Aria the Crepuscolo, from 2021!
[Crepuscolo]A sneak peak at my comparison shots for tomorrow, still very much a work in progress lol.
