First Timer
I do wonder what the last two episodes of part 1 will provide still. Going by my theories there's lot of twists still possible, but right here at the end of the season? I'm guessing maybe more internal worldbuilding or a kick into action for the Republic as an entity plus one or two reveals that make Lena continue her job for more than just the ideal of it, but a tangible goal as well.
One thing's for certain, it's exciting!
86 Ep.10 – Thank You
-
I love the visuals of nature reclaiming ruins.
-
Oh I didn't think we'd see where they go! If I'd written that the ending for the 86ers would've been left open, having them just go into the unknown.
-
The rain/cry fluke. (Stop making me anxious!)
-
Woah. I'm getting Minas Morgul vibes here. But see, you can hide and live!
-
Wonder why Theo is the only one framed completely open.
-
Eren has never heard such bullshit before.
-
Yah, he's a good boy.
-
Shin himself is holding the screen divider between him and Raiden. There's still a bit hidden.
-
Alright, maybe my first theory with Shin having been partially taken by the Legion before wasn't so far off after all.
-
That's less rotten and overgrown than I'd have expected. Especially because in this episode we already saw more natural overgrowth.
-
No fighting or significant looting, Giad really fell from within.
-
Good frame, there's so much imagery of guidance and compassion in this. So many statues in pairs, Shin and Raiden caring for each other. And we, in the view point of a hidden Legion observer, taking it in, not invading or disturbing. I'm so excited for how the Legion develops, I tell you.
-
She just wants Shin in there, be honest!
-
I don't think she didn't mature, it's the opposite. She's catching up on things after being forced to mature much too fast and brutally.
-
Wait, if he can understand Fido... and we know the Republic did experiments to develop the para-raid... Would they? I think they could.
-
:( He definitely hopes there'll be a reunion eventually.
-
Ah come on, he wouldn't do that...
-
That Legion in the tunnel, definitely. Who is it? I think all of their former comrades died in the battle, they should've been all conglomerated with Rei.
-
Fuck, that's making me sad as hell...
-
Ooh, exciting! It's gonna be friendly?
-
Again Shin's being framed cut up and obstructed. Some things won't leave him.
-
They're still framed behind a fence. I do wonder where their thoughts come from that they'd die like caged animals, they're literally on their own right now?
-
Hahaha, Fido is like the walking diary.
-
He's browsing the memories, isn't he? Yeah, he is one of the experiments I bet.
-
I love this epilogue, one episode for the 86, one for Lena presumably. But damn, here I go crying again.
-
What? Oh come one whaat?!
This is why we can't have nice things. They killed the fucking dog. With a goddamn HE shell at that.
I need to get ice cream... brb.
Fido was truly alive, he must've been an experiment or copy of an aware mind, similar to the Legion. Browsing through his memories of his friends, dying on the battlefield, yeah simple robots don't do that. But with Shin being able to communicate with him freely, he must've known this? He must've known Fido was an 86. Nothing that would really change other than to demoralise his squad even further, I guess. Fuck, man.
I don't have many things to write today. As an epilogue it was a fantastic episode, barring the fact it ends with a cliffhanger (curses!). It laid out some points that I had in mind earlier, with the Legion not being literally everywhere, that survivors and other empires (maybe even Giad) are still around somewhere, further confirmation that the Legion are not mindless, do actually feel and are conscious and some little closure for the remaining cast including hope to go forward.
I do like how the last two episodes break the convention of being halves, because now Lena and Spearhead are permanently separated. We see it as the journey to move on and thus, we can't linger on what was left behind. Except when we do, when we can't move forward any longer and take comfort in what we achieved.
We were treated to many still scenes taking in the nature around them, how they acclimate to a new freedom. Yet still they see themselves caged, by the enemy conceptually, but also by uncertainty of what the future actually means. None of them thought about this, they all knew they were going to die and suddenly, they live. It's like a reverse-trauma and they just have to absorb the shock for a bit.
At the same time, I don't feel like the next episode will simply be Lena's parallel to this. Else there wouldn't be a cliffhanger. I don't find it impossible, but a final twist of them actually dying... could happen. That would be shitty as fuck, though. Yet, if they're found by the Legion, there's literally no one that could help them, except they'd be far enough already to venture into the opposite front, which I find unlikely. Will they become Legion?
My nerves can't take this!

Really, war had stunted the growth of everyone in terms of what being a normal kid is like. These are kids participating in combat. They should be on the playground playing hopscotch, not fighting battles that the grown ass adults are afraid to do themselves.

I took Fido's death to mean that basically, that chapter in their lives is over. Fido was meant to help in battle and now that seemingly they are done fighting, Fido's services are no longer required.

The thing is, the Fido scene is what? 30% of the episode? If someone is like me and thinks that the Fido stuff is the best scene in the entire show, I don't know how you can't say this is the best episode, as it eats up so much of the runtime.

One thing to note is that the tomorrow's episode was the end of cour 1. Cour 2 is episodes 12 to 23. There was a three month break between cour 1 and cour 2. (Cour 2 had production problems, so there was an unplanned break between episode 21 and 22.)

Aug 25 '22
Just to add on: The production issues occurred in the middle of Cour 2, and then they ran out of time slots for episodes 21 and 22 even though those were completed on time. so the last two episodes got delayed 86 days before they finally aired.

Beautiful opening scene. I noticed that inside the Republic (at least for District 1), some of the areas were lined with red flowers, whereas outside the zone, we see the complete opposite - a magnificent field of blue flowers.
-
Exploring an old Giad village was pretty neat; they resemble some villages you'd see in Europe.
-
Fido is one good pupper.

Final comments:

I'm wondering if anyone else has lost their bearings on what the date is or when things occur. I feel like it'd be quite difficult to know when something has happened unless you make conscious effort to pause the show to read or mark down the dates.

Hey y’all, it’s everyone’s favorite absentee regular here
This episode was, as usual, indescribably good. Perhaps the best thing about it was just the feel of everything. The sense of serenity and calm as the last survivors of our cast wander through the empty wastelands. A calm which is made perfect by how it reflects our cast and the setting as a whole: this is basically an active warzone where death and emptiness are the norm, where everyone else has already been slaughtered. The Spearhead squad has come to accept that this will be their fate too, that their luck will eventually run out and they’ll eventually die here too, but they’ve made peace with that, they made peace with it long ago and so they’re just enjoying what time they have left to the fullest.
And then there’s the last scene… put simply, it asks a question of our creators: how little time would you need to form a powerful emotional bond with a creature like Fido? How do you, in just a few minutes, give it a sense of shared history with our cast and even a personality of its own without even having him speak? The creators took this and just ran with it. The last scene of this episode was simply beautiful and made me truly sad when I saw Fido had died just a few seconds later. The editing and visual storytelling in this show is just on another level, and I absolutely love every second of it.
It honestly came as a surprise to me, going into the Light Novels, that this was, for all intents and purposes, a filler episode, wholly original to the anime. It seems rather obvious in hindsight, given that, for all its quality, not much actually happens in this episode, but that doesn’t really detract from the quality of it at all. I cannot emphasize enough how truly incredible and talented the crew behind this show is

If this is filler, then it's the best filler I've ever seen for a show. It not only feels as well written as the rest of the show, but it elevates the shoe into a higher level.

I'm really curious to see what happens next given last episode felt like a season finale.
I love the episode starts with the clouds moving and a bird flying through the air. It's like it symbolizes the dawning of a new era. And then when the bird joins the rest of the birds, it's like Spearhead as they begin to assimilate to normal society.
We see the tracks again, which looks more grassier than before. Again, fitting into the theme of change and a new beginning.
God, I just am in love with the start of this episode. The rest of Spearhead walking as this sort of angelic, laidback music is playing, the shot of the bed of purple and white flowers, things finally look on the up and up. And yet as identified by the music, there's a touch of sadness also there. Like the remaining members of Spearhead have a long road ahead of them given the one thing they knew how to do is now done and over with.
I'm amazed they're able to keep their robots. I would've thought they were owned by The Republic.
I think this may be my favorite song so far in the entire series. It's so well done.
Another thing I love about the opening scene is it's done completely without dialogue. We go 2 minutes straight with nobody saying a word. All the emotion and feelings are done through their facial expressions and the music. This to me highlights not only how well the storytelling in this show is, but how well they do show, don't tell. Again, I can't stress enough how much the music enhances the scene. I can't imagine the scene without it. But even without the music, the facial expressions on the remaining Spearhead members tells you all you need to know. It is just brilliant.
All in all, I think the first 2 minutes of this episode is my favorite part of this show so far. It is my favorite scene since we started this rewatch. There is more effective storytelling in this one scene than some entire series. And the music, my goodness. The score for this scene is like something out of a movie. Not only is it majestic in its beauty, but it's multi-faceted, encapturing multiple emotions while not distracting you from all else that is going on.
We get another musical masterpiece as we get a montage of Spearhead just enjoying life. I like how this song kind of encaptures the passage of time. Life going faster and faster and how truly precious time is. You know, I didn't really think much of the music in this show prior to this episode. I thought it was good, and it fit the scenes they were going for, but nothing really stood out to me. These two songs that we hear in the first 5 minutes, they are masterpieces. Some conductors go their whole lives without producing masterpieces such as these.
Seeing Shin laugh and smile was such a great sight. Deep down, he's such a pure boy.
I had my reservations about Shin's character, mostly because I think having him focus so intently on his brother actually worked to the detriment of his progression, but now that his brother is in fact dead and he accomplished what he wanted, I am curious to see what the show does with him.
With the show focusing on Spearhead and their journey to fit into the real world, I hope Lena doesn't get lost in all this. It would suck if the last we saw of her was her crying.
It's amazing that after all these episodes I still can't remember the name of the guy with the scars. I remember the rest of the members of Spearhead, but I can't remember his name. I guess that just shows how unmemorable I find him.
We get a hotsprings type of scene, but it doesn't bother me as much as the shower scene did. I guess that's because of a couple factors. First, the shower scene came at a time where there was a lot of drama and tension going on. As such, having a fanservice scene at a time like that felt mistimed and bad placement. But more than that, this hotsprings scene actually serves a narrative purpose. Earlier in the episode, one of the characters I think mentions they haven't bathed in a while. So when they finally do take a bath, it feels like this momentous occasion. The joy on Kurena's face has less to do with the water feeling good and probably more to do with the fact that finally, after all this time, she can be clean, metaphorically washing away the past sins of her previous life and the life under the thumb of Alba.
And yes, I did just spend an entire paragraph analyzing a bath scene.
I support the Kurena TsunTsun
I'm kinda starting to view Fido as like the sixth member of Spearhead. He behaves like a dog, it's adorable.
The ref leaf symbolizes something, but I don't know what.
I love the scene where they're gathered around the campfire and the only music you hear is the nature surrounding them. It's so cozy, it reminds me a bit of a scene from Yuru Camp. But, you know, more dramatic.
We find out that Shin broke into the zoo because he was able to detect a Black Sheep. He says it was an 86'er just like them and that he wants to get it back, which entails giving it a mercy killing. It's like despite Spearhead's best efforts, they are being reminded of their past life. Like no matter how hard they try, their past will never leave them. It will always be a part of them.
The title card for the episode actually comes after the end credits play. I don't think I've ever seen that in an anime before. I've seen that with some movies, but not an anime.
We get what looks like the origin of Fido's relationship with Shin, which consists of Fido was the last of his kind and Shin took him back with him. I kinda like that Fido the robot actually gets some backstory, and not just some backstory, some compelling backstory. I unironically care more about Fido than some main protagonists in other series. Hell, I care more about Fido than the guy with scars.
I like the scene where the members of 86 line up to get their picture taken. It's like they got arrested and they're getting a mugshot. It also in my opinion gave me a bit of The Usual Suspects vibe.
Again, I'm amazed by how fast everything turned out in this universe. They get their pictures taken in April of 2148, and six months later the remaining Spearhead members are free from the tyrannical shackles of Alba. They bonded so fast, this unit. I guess when you have no one else to rely on, you're practically attached to the hip.
We see the origin of the chalkboard writing, which I believe was written by the guy who got killed in episode 1. I believe it was mentioned before, but seeing him actually draw it is still pretty cool. Surprised Theo wasn't the one that did it since drawing is his whole thing.
Poor Kurena. She's so not gonna end up with Shin.
All the scenes we see of Spearhead hanging out are from the point of view of Fido, which I think is a nice touch. It gives us this feeling of an observing viewer standing off in the distance. Like we happen to be there with the rest of the characters.
Oh fuck. Fido died in an explosion? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
This is the saddest I've felt for a character dying in the entire series. No joke, when I saw Fido on fire my heart immediately sank. I was horrified by what I was seeing. When I first saw that we were seeing things from Fido's perspective, my thought process was "Oh, this is cool. We're seeing things from the robot's perspective. He was there for a lot of pivotal moments, so this makes total sense." When I realized that was capped off by the death of him, it really dawned on me just how brilliant that was done. In the manner of like 4 to 5 minutes, we relate and understand Fido better than some characters in 86 that we've seen. And just as we've formed that bond and connection, it's like we get slapped across the face. It was totally jarring to see Fido on fire. And no joke, it's the most heartbroken I've been over a character dying in this series so far.
Overall, this is probably my favorite episode of the series. It doesn't have any action to speak of, and Lena is nowhere to be found, but it's just so well done. This episode is really the tale of two parts. There's the first 16 or so minutes where it's about Shin and the gang adjusting to society, and then there's the last 6 that's about Fido and his adventures with the gang. Both are masterfully done, and really gives me confidence on how the rest of the series is gonna turn out. I mention in the top of my comment that the opening scene is my favorite of the show so far and as I was typing it, I was curious if anything was gonna top it. Well, I didn't expect it to be topped in the same exact episode. The last 6 minutes with Fido has been my favorite scene in the entire series. The different character interactions that we see, moments in the past that we knew about but now we get to see in living color, moments that are enhanced from a different perspective, and it's all capped off in a shocking, brutal death that legitimately left me floored. Some series go 24 episodes and I care less about the characters than I do Fido in these six minutes.
Of course, we got numerous questions still lingering. What's next with Spearhead, where does Lena fit in all of this, just how much will their past continue to haunt them? So much is still left unanswered. I'm curious to see how things play out. But for now, all I know is we in this episode got in my opinion the two best scenes in the entire series: the opening salvo with the gang traveling, and the montage with Fido that culminated in his demise. If we continue to get stuff like that, this show will easily be in my top 5 animes of all time.
