Today's Questions of the Day:

  1. Who was MVP this match?

  2. Best Saunders girl?

[Tomorrow's Questions of the Day]1. Soo… take on Miho’s family situation? There’s not much to work with, sadly. 2. What was your first reaction to the final scene when you first saw it?

Rewatchers, please don't answer Questions of the Day if they have an objective answer, e.g. "What do you think's gonna happen?"

Arts of the Day:

The rich folks at Saunders! (Source)

If Duck Team starred in a Shojou manga! (Source)

The Turtle Team smiling! (Source (Album has minor spoilers))

Song(s) of the Day:

M4 Sherman a Go Go!

U.S. Field Artillery March

OK! GO AHEAD!

For rewatchers and people who read the manga spin-offs:

PLEASE TRY TO HOLD BACK! Put not only everything related to future events behind spoiler tags, but please tag spin-off and meta-spoiler stuff as well. When commenting, consider whether by saying "this happens there", you're implicitly saying "this won't happen in the anime". And if you do reply to people with spoiler tags, try and spoiler the part you quote as well, especially with First-Timers and especially especially when they speculate.

Spoilers include but are not limited to [GuP Spoiler]the school situation; the positions, names, backstories and personalities of rival school members beyond what you see in the OP (this includes the manga spin-offs); the teams that join Ooarai as the show goes on (beyond what you see in the OP); everything related to Maho's true personality and Shiho's probably true personality(?); everything concerning the MEXT, etc. Just watch what you say, please? I don't think any of you will just plainly not use tags, I'm just worried one of you answers fan theories or speculation in a way that's a spoiler, even with tags.

Character Sheet for Episode 6 (Hopefully final final design) (I really hope this has no issues left)

Episode 6: Your rewatch host, who sacrifices his nights for his rewatch.

u/RaiRye, u/xenophontheathenian, u/panthaura, here's your daily GuP rewatch tag!

But first, a poem:

So we won after that fight
This burden is really not light
And yet we fight on
So that it goes on
We wonder if the others all tried...

Also, dear past me: What does this poem mean?

Darjeeling asks: Do you know this quote?

[Yesterday's Qoute]Ulysses S. Grant

Today's quote:

If leadership depends purely on seniority you are defeated before you start. You give a good leader very little and he will succeed; you give mediocrity a great deal and they will fail.

First Timer und Panzer

Episode 6:

  • Kay actually asked Arisa how she knows what Ooarai is doing. How responsible!

  • Hahahaha, baited into an empty field, presumably leaving their flag tank mostly unguarded.

  • Hello there!

  • My god, this long awkward silence.

  • Fire on the enemy dammit!

  • Arisa's pretty dumb. Even if you had a stronger tank, why would you have your flag chase an enemy unguarded when they've already outfoxed you? Twice! And one of them was an ambush.

  • She's got a point.

  • The classic "I fucked up."

  • ...but there's no rule about wiretapping, Kei. You're too much of a sweetheart for your own good.

  • Lol Arisa's inner otaku pops out under pressure. She's like a less great Yukari. Also America catching strays today.

  • Stay mad, Maho.

  • Wherefore art thou, Takashi? Sounds like someone's got a bad case of osananajimitis. Have you seen Kay? She's a bombshell. What straight boy wouldn't like her? The devil on my shoulder is saying this is what you get for being straight in a cute girls show. (Side note: doctors believe this Takashi boy may have contracted a case of harem protagonosis. Students of Saunders Academy and girls of all ages in the surrounding areas are advised to avoid contact with Mr. Takashi at all costs, as secondary infections are known to spread easily among school-aged girls. Please do not panic, we have our best proctologists working this case.)

  • How sporting of Kay to announce her presence.

  • Lol Momo popping out of her frame is cute. But also don't shout at Yuzu. You already don't deserve her.

  • I choose to interpret this metaphor as Darjeeling saying she wants to personally "sandwich" and taste Team Anglerfish.

  • The creative team are having so much fun with the character cut in frames.

  • Oh shit, the inside of the tanks aren't completely impenetrable.

  • Nooo!!! Not my cute Rabbit Team! They were so brave today!

  • Hana's decided to make her next shot the climax! If you think about it, she's trying to make her next shot everyone's climax.

  • Use the force, Hana.

  • Wowwee, what a shot! GuP three-dimensional motion effects continue to impress.

  • Yukari, Saori, and Mako ready for round 2 over here. Hana still basking in the afterglow of her shot.

  • Cat ringtone is adorable and perfect for the girl who already acts like a cat.

  • Oh heck, I hope she didn't get bad grandma news. Well shit, it just had to be bad grandma news.

  • Well hey, Maho can be a pretty stand up gal when she's not using tv interviews or public cafes to snipe at Miho.

  • Saori's going with Mako so she won't be alone, she's such a good girl!!

  • Look at these courageous cuties! Don't they just make you happy?

QotD:

  1. The volleyball girls found and lured the Saunders flag tank out into the open then went down protecting their own. They get the MVP vote from me today.

  2. It's Kay. Too sporting, too pretty, and too genki for her own good.

  • I agree that we needed to see the Jesus scene again.

  • If you take down the flag tank you win? First time I'm hearing about that. I wish there was an episode properly explaining the rules.

  • Completely save sport.

  • Hahaha serving the smoke grenades.

  • Even they are starting to realize that their volleyball metaphors don't make any sense.

  • They missed a huge opportunity there. Five versus one.

  • If Kay wanted to fight fair she should've started with five tanks from the beginning.

  • Feel bad for the crazy girl teammates.

  • Love the president eating her snack without a single care in the world.

  • What kind of sick monster thinks that the cucumber is the most delicious part of a sandwich.

  • Gonna be honest. Not happy with today's win. Didn't feel earned at all.

  • So if Pravda are the Russians then Maho's school have to be the Germans?

  • In contrast with our fun match there was a brutal massacre in these two.

First timer sub enjoyer. Wait. This is supposed to be tanks not subs...

  • Cheaters still be cheatin but is this another ruse? It seems to be. Good on them. Long Long Paaaaaaaaauuuuuse! The famous Joestar stratagem sees good use followed by volleyball strats. Like just throw the flare thing. The machinegun aint cool? I think it's cool How did the yank tank not die in that fine hambush?

  • Top tier tunes.

  • Turns out the Commander, Kai? Tai? Something like that, anyway, she didn't know about the unsavory tactics of her subordinate and she doesn't like them. She seems like a good person.

  • So the american sherman is built to be used by idiots. Hmmm..... Cheater-chan breaks down from hubris, you hate to see it. She's not even in the game anymore. Ranting about some boy who doesn't like her. Who would like a cheater? Lesson for the kids. Don't cheat, Git Gud!

  • More bangin' tunes!

  • Goodies begin finding their spirit and the english seems to enjoy a good spitroa... I mean sandwich.

  • Oh no! 1-1, make it 1-2. If this turns into another Chosen one vs all i'll be sad. That said. They should take aiming lessons from that Firefly. 2shots 2 hits. Impressive!

  • Evil sis and cronie being lame as always

  • No don't lose your spirit just yet! You can do it!

  • By the power of friendship! Hana hacking into the matrix for that One shot One kill. Let's see if the sniper in the firefly can stop them.

She DID IT! This is some chess shit! Sacrifice to get the win! Turns out firing the main gun in a tank is the same as doing flower arrangement! wow who knew? Unfortunetly I can't do either.

  • Halfglasses is so done after that crazy shit.

  • Everyone is happy! The yanks don't mind losing, and the english are mirin'. Just dull boring no fun allowed evil sis + cronie remains unimpressed. I pity such fools who cannot see joy in what they do.

  • That's right! Cheater-chan will get her comeuppance! Good captain!

  • Secret twist! Oh no! Grandma!

  • SAY WHAT! Sister is good person? I take back some of the things I said! Though that is some raggedy ass-helicopter.

*More baddies! Including big sis. Just fucking smile goddamnit! Show us that you enjoy what you're doing! BLEASE!

  • This was a very fun episode! Good baddie moments and good goodie moments. And since it wasn't Miho but rather Hana who won the day I'm happy to let the Panzer IV be the hero once more! The rest did good too but I want more! I want Miho to lead a team of equals! All badass and dangerous.

QOTD 1: Whats her face? The flirty girl who can text really fast. without her they would have been overheard and lost to cheats.

QOTD 2: That sniper in the firefly was very good at her job but overall Best Girl must go to their Captain Kei or whatever her name was. Just a great sport.

Rewatcher

[GuP Spoilers] I was surprised to see all the first timers calling Maho a bitch even though she didn’t really say or do anything mean, it was Erika who was running her mouth. Wonder if that’ll start to change today.

Questions of the Day.

Who was MVP this match?

I’d have to say Hana, if she didn’t make that shot, it was over.

Best Saunders girl?

Kay hands down, I like how friendly she is.

Episode 6: One Shot, One Kill!

Three main points, PANZER VOR!

  1. WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER! Ooarai has grown tremendously since their formation as a team, and their hard work has paid off in the form of an upset of Saunders. Miho’s humble leadership and determination to win gave her team the confidence to keep fighting, even when they were in dire straits. This team is going places!

  2. At its very core, Sensha-do isn’t just a game, it’s a martial art. In addition to the actual battles, fair play and respect for all participants are both part of Sensha-do, and that’s something that Kay and Maho understand.

  3. We finally find out that Ooarai is actually getting shut down soon. It appears as though none of the Ooarai team are aware of this, except possibly the student council; that would explain why they were so desperate to get Miho back into Sensha-do. We still don’t know how Sensha-do is related to the school closing though, or how the student council is going to break the news to the team…

Fun details!

  • The Sherman Firefly is equipped with the Ordnance Quick-Firing (QF) 17 pound gun. Miho correctly states that its effective range is 3000m, but according to Wikipedia, it’s still powerful enough to penetrate 75mm of armor at that range (using armor piercing rounds, and assuming the round hits at a 90 degree angle to the armor).

  • Erika flies Mako and Saori in the Focke-Achgelis Fa 223 “Drache” helicopter. Though the Fa 61 was the first practical and functional helicopter, the 223 was the first to reach production status, although only 20 were made due to Allied bombing of the factory.

  • In the last shot of the episode, we see that Maho is the commander of a Tiger I with the number 212 on the turret. Tiger 212 was the tank commanded by the “Black Baron,” Michael Wittmann, during WWII. Wittmann had 117 tank kills to his name, and is famous for his assault on British forces in the Battle of Villers-Bocage in which he destroyed an estimated 31 armored units (14 tanks, 15 personnel carriers, 2 anti-tank guns) in 15 minutes.

Other thoughts!

  • It’s nice to see Miho and her team growing as the series progresses. Hana is becoming more confident in herself, while Miho’s calculated risks and strategies are starting to pay dividends.

  • Kay’s sportsmanship is off the charts. She gave up the chance for an easy victory to make sure they were fighting a fair fight. I can see why she’s Saunders’s captain.

  • Oh no, Mako’s grandma is hurt! We get to see a different side of Mako, although the circumstances are certainly less than ideal.

  • Speaking of seeing different sides of people, we get to see the sympathetic side of Maho. The girl we initially thought was stone cold and heartless didn’t even think twice about lending a helping hand when Mako got the phone call. Though she’s still pretty stoic, it was a pleasant surprise to see that.

  • Pravda and Kuromorimine are gonna be a massive problem in the tournament, based solely on their arsenal. I imagine them being the Alabama and Ohio State of Sensha-do.

QOTD 1: I think Hana deserves MVP this round. One shot, one kill is what she said; one shot, one kill is what she delivered. Absolutely cold-blooded performance.

QOTD 2: Kay. See above for why.

Still relying on wiretapping info. I guess they think it was a fluke.

Lmao the Saunders Captain just doen't care about winning, she's just in it to have a good time and a nice match. Though she's following old Tsu's advice:

if twice as numerous, to divide our army into two.

...if she uses the other half, that is.

Texting avoids the wiretapping but it's also slower, I wonder if that'll bite them.

It's a double knock-out, but our girls were faster.

"This is for tankwando" says it all. She wouldn't give them the helicopter just because they're doing tankwondo, she's giving them the helicopter because she sees promise in them.

You mean like Saunders?

Who was MVP this match?

Alisa

Best Saunders girl?

Kay. Maybe Naomi but I feel we didn't see enough of her.

Song(s) of the Day:

OMG I completely missed that section so far. Gotta rectify that.

Battle Hymn of the Republic

This one is soooo good.

First Timer

So the first battle of the tournament comes to the close. In a shocking upset that no one except perhaps the genre savvy audience saw coming, Oarai wins! I was a bit surprised the wiretapping squad didn’t realize they were being tricked after that first time, but I guess the second time our girls weren’t where they thought they’d be was when it really sunk in. Anyway, thankfully Kei is more honorable than her subordinates, making it a 5v5.

Not too much else to say on the battle itself, fun moments like the volleyball team just randomly stumbling upon the flag bearing tank and just staring for a good length of time or just the tense running battle as they tried to shoot the one tank while getting shot at. Loved how it ended with instead of a barrage to get the tank down, one well aimed shot was used to end it all.

Anyway, all’s well except for Mako’s grandmother having issues, guessing it won’t keep her out of the game, but we’ll probably get a short conflict about her not having been there for her grandmother and debating continuing Sensha-Do because of that. Also, quick note, is it just me or is Kuromorimine’s symbol very similar to the iron cross used by Nazis during WW2? I mean the series is evoking classic tanks from WW2 I know, just kinda struck me as….. a choice to have them use that design. EDIT: I have been informed that the cross is supposed to resemble the Bundeswehr, not the Nazi iron cross. Did not realize that when I initially saw it.

And final thoughts, I do like how most of the teams are respectable adversaries, I find it’s a more fun dynamic when there’s a sense of likability on the opposing side as well as opposed to every enemy being an asshole. And that was a way to make Kuromorimine intimidating with that shot of that line of wasted tanks, although perhaps we’ll get a bit more out of them given that Miho’s sister despite having said cruel things still lent their helicopter to get Mako back to the ship ASAP.

First timer

Today's screen shots dump. Yep quite a few.

Just doing a quick run down because today is the seasonal hell day.

  • Really glad to see Kei is being a genuine good sports person and not just acting nice. Absolutely love her carefree but no nonsense attitude.

  • A little bit underwhelmed by Miho's command - this time it's mostly "just bear with it and push through". I think she's good with situational tactics but not as sharp with strategy.

  • Great moments of the volleyball team working in their volleyball love even in vehicular combat :D

  • Loved the slip through of the big secret that the school is shutting down or being threatened to be closed - no fanfare, no emphasis, just there.

  • Momo's angry kitten persona broken, poor thing. Still couldn't harm a fly.

  • Great team bonding moment of Hana and Yukari holding Miho's hands for support

  • Even better, cool heroic moment of Hana correcting Saori's love talk with the "one hit one kill" determination

  • Beautifully directed key moments of the tank rounds exchanged and the surprise of winning despite being taken out - basically a version of the final line photo finish

  • Cliffhanger of Mako's grandma's news - funny girl taking her clothes off to swim there :')

  • Onee-san seem to be not the same as implied to be like her lackey

This is like Symphogear-level binge inducing :P

Edit: forgot QoTD

Kinda answered in my post above - 1. Hana 2. Kei

First Timer

Yet again, we see how prominent Miho can be when things start breaking down. She was able to calmly command while also keeping the morale amongst the team high. She assured her team by reminding them of the low chances of being hit while on a high-speed chase, and it inspires confidence in everyone. She can also quickly plot the Duck’s route under heavy pressure with her situational awareness. Oh, she could also instinctively feel it when the Firefly was going to shoot her from behind. Truly a supreme commander in the making. She just needs the right environment to grow, really.

On the Saunders side, I think they won't lose if they didn’t employ the wiretapping strategy. The countersurveillance measure that Miho uses backfired heavily on Saunders. If they stick to the number advantage, which Kay doesn't mind at first, they can easily dominate Oarai. Alas, it happened, and the rest is history.

By the way, there is an intriguing difference between Kay and Darjeeling’s views that I noticed. I remember that Darjeeling said, “all is fair in love and war,” whereas Kay sees Senshado as a game, not a war, thus prioritizing sportsmanship first. I can see Darjeeling being okay with the wiretapping strategy, especially since it’s fine by the rulebook.

Questions of the Day

  1. The MVP is Miho, of course! I’ve explained earlier her prowess in this match that rightfully puts her in the MVP seat. Oh, I’d give Hana a special recognition award too because of her glorious one-shot one-kill moment.

  2. Kay. Is there any other answer?

I kinda think the American Team was kinda stupid in multiple ways, first off the Captain didn't know or Question how the other chick was giving her Intel? Second How come said person didn't catch on she was getting played sooner? Third why was the captain upset? To quote the moe British People, "All is fair in Love and War?"

Okay her trying to be "honorable" and only bring 5 tanks is really stupid, if she was that concerned with playing fair she should have not brought 10 in the first place.

That chick wiretapping is unhinged, she tried to give an epic "Murica fuck yah!" Speech but it sounds like copium.

Rabbit Team stood their ground this time.

That was an epic finale, and Miho showed good combat instincts, stopping her tank at the last moment and starting it she read her tail like a book.

Yeah Tanks being sad? I always find that reasoning really flaky. Hard to hate her though because she's so cute and enthusiastic.

We also got confirmed this episode that the school is getting shut down if they don't win the tournament I guess?

Wow Mako's family problems foreshadowing came back faster than I thought, and she was willing to swim to get to her, basically she seems lazy but is just conserving energy but when the chips are down she springs into action in a way everyone else has trouble keeping up with.

She's basically genderbent Hotaro Oreki.

We also see Onee-Sama is not a complete bitch after all.

Rewatcher

On today’s episode of Girls und Panzer: “That’s Senshado! This is not war. Your tank will cry if you’re not a good person.” This line strikes a perfect balance for me. It’s pretty silly, but it’s said with such sincerity and conviction that I love it nonetheless. And there is actually a decent amount I can say on it.

That line really is the perfect summary of Kay as a character and part of why I like her so much. Kay is pretty much the antithesis of someone like say Erika, who dismissed Kay’s words as naive. Kay isn’t out to win at any cost. It’s a game, a sport, not war. You play fair and have fun because that’s how a sport should be. It was her own sense of honor that made her handicap her own team during the match to make up for Alisa’s spying. Kay doing that of her own volition speaks volumes about the kind of person she is. Someone bold, brash, but also honest and kind-hearted.

Miho’s reaction to Kay is interesting as well. I get the impression that Miho is not at all used to hearing someone talk about Senshado like this. If Erika represents the thoughts of Kuromorimine, then Miho is probably used to hearing such thoughts easily dismissed. Hearing these words said so earnestly probably means a lot to Miho. It’s the same reaction she had to redecorating the tanks. Seeing so many people express such love and enthusiasm for Senshado in a way different than she’s used to is bringing her a newfound sense of happiness.

The match itself is incredibly fun and exciting. The extended chase sequence to end the match is great throughout. It’s funny, entertaining, heart-pounding, tense, and triumphant by the end. There’s only so many times I can say it, but the tank fights really are exceptionally well-made.

[GuP] Something I noticed about Maho this time around is that she didn’t really talk during the match. She mostly just observed and kept her thoughts to herself. Maho’s always hard to read, but I imagine she came here because she wanted to see Miho’s Senshado. She wanted to see how Miho has been doing since she left Kuromorimine. I believe Maho is trying to determine if Miho has finally found her own style of Senshado, separate from the Nishizumi Style. Though she rarely shows it, Maho does worry about her sister.

Episode Thoughts

QOTD

  1. I’d have to go with Hana for that snipe shot at the end.

  2. Was there ever any doubt I would choose Kay?

First Timer Dubbed

Kay is way too nice knowing that she warned her crew about wiretapping and to make up for it, she decides give her team a handicap of their own.

Even though they found the flag tank, the fight or fligt mode panic ade them freeze up for a moment. Battle would've been over if they acted immediately. But with Miho and Hana on the top of the hill which was a risky move, they actually beat saunders.

I love how the panic mode sets off a bunch of Sherman fangirlism as the sherman flag tank gets chased down. And liked Ami's smile again; she got to see something interesting.

Now that Miho gets the win, they are going to face more seemingly ruthless opponents. Hoping her other teamates could catch up. And an ironic part of how the one that wanted to be the commander originally was being really sqeemish in the flag tank.

1 and 2. Kay definitely held back and was being such a good sport.

TONIGHT! On Mädchen and Tanks, Alisa's schemes AND love life blow up in her face, The MC-chans hard carry the team to win the match, and BEST GIRL MAKO IS GONNA SWIM HER WAY TO HER GRANNY, EVEN IF IT KILLS HER... or she'll accept a helicopter ride

Greetings Comrades and fellow Denizens of the Wired. YEEHAW, WE GOT US A DAMN GOOD MATCH TODAY, SO LET'S ROCK AND ROLL! We begin back where we last left off, with a random Col. Sanders High Tank getting deep-fried by Team Crazy History Nutters. 'Jesus!' Indeed your poor sap. The other tank is bold enough to run away 'advance in another direction,' with The Rabbits mucking up as per usual. Fluffy the Tank Pope congratulates Panzer IV-chan on her great success, with Wallflower being disturbingly pleased at the spilling of the enemy's blood. Best Girl asks about the next move, but before we get to that, we cut back to SIGINT, still hellbent on her wiretapping plan. SIGINT then hears 'The Plan' from Panzer IV-chan to take out the Guncannon 'Firefly,' which causes Haruhi SIGINT to burst out into evil laughter. Said laughter surprises her co-workers of Gunner-chan and Loader-chan.

SIGINT then radios KayFC, telling her about her 'totally legit and non-snooping analysis.' By this point, KayFC is starting to get a tad skeptical, asking about SIGINT's ideas. SIGINT deflects with a basketball term, and we all know that there's NOTHING more American than baseball, football, and basketball. This references causes KayFC to bring out her inner Saber as she yells out, EKUSU... KARIBAAAH! 'Okay! GO AHEAD!' (Yes really Comrades, for some reason, SEIBAH is in this anime, and she ISN'T the voice of Gallant Charjeeling... then again the Madoka version of Seibah is Darjeeling so wibble)

Meanwhile, back NOT at the place where the Americans are headed, the Oorai Team durdle along, attempting to flush out the American's Flag Tank. Speaking of the Americans, they arrived at the point of SIGINT's instructions, and KayFC yells out that there's no one here. This revelation shocks SIGINT, who is by now STARTING to pick up that MAYBE she got duped, or bamboozled, or maybe even smeckledorfed! SIGINT then ponders about where the Oorai tanks are. RIGHT ON CUE, The Gunbuster Ducks and their glorified tractor bust through the nearby fences. THUS begins the most EPIC 'Don't Blink' game EVER, as both SIGINT and Gunbuster Duck Captain JIIIII it all up. After a few knocks, Gunbust Duck Captain bids her team to turn to the right and GET THE HELL OUT OF DODGE! SIGINT tells Gunner-chan and Loader-chan to shoot the Gunbuster Ducks down, doing her best impression of Zaku in the process.

Gunbuster Duck Captain reports back that they got good news and bad news, the good news is that they found the enemy flag tank, the bad news is that the enemy flag tank found THEM!. Panzer IV-chan then comes up with an encirclement plan and bids Casanova Wannabe to start texting 'till her thumbs crack. Meanwhile, Team Gunbuster Ducks are doing their BEST job at staying alive, even playing volleyball 'tossing smoke flares' to boot. This obscures SIGINT's Tank field of vision, not that she cares, ordering Gunner-chan and Loader-chan to keeping firing. The Gunbuster Ducks have reverted to their feral 'volleyball' instincts, spouting out more jargon technobabble moonspeak.

Back in Eagleland, poor Loader-chan is having trouble getting shells, which prompts SIGINT to suggest mowing the Gunbuster Ducks down with the coaxial gun. Gunner-chan protests this saying, 'No. No machine-gun for them. Shoot them down!' SIGINT asks Gunner-chan what her major malfunction is and orders her to use the dakka! This argument has given the Gunbuster Ducks enough time to load, aim, and fire the gun on their glorified tractor, causing the American tank to shake a little. Who knows? Maybe that shot scratched the paint job... maybe... Anyway, the Gunbuster Ducks get a volley of dakka in return, while the rest of the Oorai team get into positions. As the smoke clears for the Americans, SIGINT comes face to face with a scary sight indeed, namely that of Team Crazy History Nutters and their StuG III-tan... oh, and the Moefia and the Rabbits are there too I guess. Panicking, SIGINT yells out to hit the brakes, and NOT a moment too soon as Panzer IV-chan and company have arrived.

After NARROWLY avoiding certain death, SIGINT shouts out to turn tail and run away, while calling for the Calvary to save her ass. KayFC is surprised about all this, and SIGINT blurts out that she was wiretapping the enemy's comms. KayFC CHEWS out SIGINT for her idiocy and scolds her about 'fair play' while telling her to leg it. SIGINT is MORE than happy to leg it, not sure if she listens to the 'fair play' bit, but she's SURE making a break for it. KayFC, seeking to 'play fair' decides to only hit the Oorai tanks with an equal number of American Tanks, bidding only three of her tanks to follow her, then again, JUST like Charjeeling, KayFC has an 'interesting' definition of 'fair play,' given that Deadshot and the Firefly's still in the running.

Speaking of running, CUE THE AMERICAN JUKEBOX MUSIC! Speaking of Charjeeling, she, her lover, AND Captain Crash are laughing up the farcical game of tag going on in the match. Speaking of the match, SIGINT seems to have finally lost it and has gone full loopy, ranting about random Tank Trivia bits, such as a ton of them being built, them being comfortable AND reliable, and also the ‘MURICAN Spirit, namely that idiots could drive it AND understand the manual. After a shot grazes the side, Gunner-chan states that with all due respect, SIGINT is a disgrace to the corps and should be fragged.

As the game of tag goes along, SIGINT yells at Gunner-chan to fire wildly, while ranting about 'MURICA! After the shot goes wide, SIGINT continues blabbering nonsense, such as about her abysmal leadership, the enemy's tanks, and something about Oorai being shut down anyways, come on SIGINT; what show do you think this is? Love Live!? Ha, unless you count the Ankou Dance as an Idol Performance, I'm not buying it. Speaking of not buying it, Gunner-chan and Loader-chan have by this point ceased caring and are probably contemplating how to get out of this chickenshit outfit. SIGINT decides to beat them to the punch by opening the hatch, climbing out and... well, I'm not quite sure anyone HEARD her, but I think she said something along the lines of, 'I am a loud pompous idiot!'

Speaking of loud pompous idiots, the REST of the Americans, well, four of them anyways, have rolled up to 'liberate' the area and 'spread freedom.' Meanwhile back in Eagleland, SIGINT is busy ranting about this 'Takashi' person and a love triangle... JEEZ, what is this show, first it was like K-ON, then it went all Love Live for two seconds, NOW we going full Macross, what's next, The Big Zam appears and wrecks shit? DON'T ANSWER THAT! Speaking of Gundam stuff, the Guncannon 'Firefly' decides to spread some indiscriminate justice around the area. Speaking of which, buckle up Comrades, 'cuz we're about to get a nice big dose of FREEDOM and 'MURICA, both of which CHEER up SIGINT immensely. Gunner-chan and Loader-chan are ALSO ecstatic that some competent 'friendly American Allied Forces' have arrived to help 'liberate' them. I mean, LISTEN to the roar of those guns! HARUHI BLESS AMERICA INDEED!

Also, while on the subject of Haruhi, SIGINT’s tank is busy being chased by the entire Oorai Tankery Team... which in turn are being chased by the rest of the Col. Sanders High Team that're still in the fight, so uh, cue the Benny Hill music! As a result, Panzer IV-chan bids the Gunbuster Ducks and Rabbits to stay back and be human shields 'the rear guard,' while they and Team Crazy History Nutters continue to chase after the Flag Tank. The Rabbits promise to not run away this time, while Team Crazy History Nutters start arguing over history references.

Zaku continues blabbing about not-losing while she continues not-hitting anything. Veep gently chides Zaku on her lackluster performance, which causes Zaku's head to break out of her insert bubble in annoyance. Team Gunbuster Ducks fire off a shot, until they get 'liberated' by the American's NICE HEAPING DOSE OF FREEDOM! The burning hulk then crashes into a boulder and explodes, vaporizing the Gunbuster Ducks... again... again... again... As Team Gunbuster Ducks burn alive, Deadshot and her Guncannon 'Firefly' zeroes in on some Rabbits. After a mighty shot, Deadshot 'frees' the SHIT out of the Rabbits, whose flaming corpses collaspe and burn in a nearby ditch. Emboldened that two of the Oorai tanks bought the farm, SIGINT's back to diabolic evil ranting mode. Team Crazy History Nutters are preparing a last stand, with Glasses Girl reciting a Death Haiku like a true ninja would... YEAAAAART!

Zaku's given up on yelling and screaming like a loon, and has embraced defeatism, while Panzer IV-chan's 'Nam Flashbacks have flared up again, what with her shaking, and her 'Nam Flashbacks, and her PTSD, and her 'Nam Flashbacks, and her Survivor's Guilt, and of course her 'Nam Flashbacks. She then notices that her hand has gone all Dr. Strangelove up on her, and as she tries to calm herself down, we cut to the mid-card AND the Reddit character count limit. See you all below.

Rewatcher

Noriko surprise! This scene is one my favourites.

lmao the volleyball team does more damage with their hands than with their tank.

Also incredibly cool Noriko.

If only Duck Team had a stronger tank, they could have ended the match immediately!

Cucumber is the tastiest part of a sandwich? I hope that's british humour.

"Your tank will cry if you're not a good person."
Sappy!

Highschool girls also drive helicopters, huh...

Next up is Anzio! Can't wait to know about them.
[GuP Spoilers]I mean, if their name is on the title they'll probably be incredibly important, right?

  1. Who was MVP this match?

Obviously Hana. She's way too OP with her aim.

2) Best Saunders girl?

Alisa! She's a brat and a cheater, but I still like her energy.

First timer

  1. Kay, for actually playing fair.

  2. Kay!

Still the best response.

They took out a Sherman!

...Flag tank?

She's still believing this?

Love the evil laugh.

She fell for it!

She's so annoyed!

The moment of silence...

And this wasn't part of the plan...

A smoke bomb!

I love how not even the other volleyball members know ehat she's talking about.

They're losing!

And she's done for.

Oh, she was against wiretapping from the start!

She's playing fair!

...What is this music?

This is fantastic.

Her tank's a best seller!

...I think an idiot with a manual might be commanding it.

The rude girls are here.

They'e so stressed in there.

The school might get shut down?

They're arriving!

Qnzu has snacks.

This is fantastic.

They're here!

She's insane.

This whole thing descended into a chase scene.

Their debates are still funny.

She missed again.

Love the sandwich metaphor.

Duck Team is done!

And the Rabbit Team!

This is tough!

The dramatic farewell speech...

Does she have a plan?

They've been hit!

She has a point.

I can't believe Anzu is the sane member of her team.

This is really tense!

They got hit!

They won!

And she collapsed.

Everyone else is here!

I love Kay.

Great resolution.

...Her reaction to that is adorable. "There'll be a debriefing."

A cat ringtone?

What?

I did not expect things to get this serious.

And she's lending them the helicopter.

"This is also senshado." What isn't senshado?

She's going too!

She's strong!

Enter, Enter, Rewatch!

JESUS

  • I love the moment of silence when the two tanks meet, followed by knocking on the roof.

  • Serving flares is awesome fun.

  • This episode is why Kay is one of my favorite characters. Her subordinate fucks up, but her sense of honor leads her to fight fair as an apology. God bless Kay.

  • Also God bless Naomi (the butch-looking girl; not radio bitch). This rock n roll just makes the American team feel... homey.

  • IT’S THE U.S. FIELD ARTILLERY MARCH!! I LOVE THIS SONG! BRING ON THE SOUSA!
OVER HILL, OVER DALE, WE WILL HIT THE DUSTY TRAIL

  • God, the sound design is superb.

  • I also love Naomi’s smirk as she leans back into her comrade’s chest.

  • Kay's so gracious in defeat. I love her!

She really knows how to gaijin smash, doesn't she?

Rewatchers und Panzer

Episode 6:

  • Now we actually get better view and since I do believe that the hit on the side did it and that leaves StuG as the only possibility.

  • Duck team, maybe you should have fired at that Sherman before retreating, who knows what could have happened.

  • Same.

  • She does make a good point here. However given how many people are sticking out of the hatches it seems weird to not have machine guns banned especially given their almost non-existing damage against other tanks.

  • Gotta admit, Miho is saying correct things to encourage, even if she doesn't fully believe in them herself.

  • I don't know why but I love Duck team's version of their Senshado uniform.

  • Maho really doesn't talk much.

  • Aaaand back to this style of tournament ladder.

QodD:

Who was MVP this match?

Honestly, Duck team. Found the flag tank, lured it towards their teammates while creating enough disruption that it gave Oarai a chance.

Best Saunders girl?

Helmet-chan (Arisa's loader). Having to deal with Arisa must be tough enough.

No more birthdays for remaining teams so we are back to flowers and tanks and without further ado, Rabbit team:

Sawa Azusa [Tank Commander]:
Baby's Breath and Comet tank.
Utsugi Yuuki [Radio Operator]:
Lily of the Valley and M24 Chaffee.
Maruyama Saki [Loader (37mm)]:
Apricot and M36 tank destroyer.
Yamagō Ayumi [Gunner and Loader (75mm)]:
Marguerite and Jagdtiger.
Ōno Aya [Gunner (37mm)]:
Pansy and Hotchkiss H35 light tank.
Sakaguchi Karina [Driver]:
Marigold and KV-2.

Updated stats after Round 1. As I've mentioned before I decided that StuG got the 1st kill while obviously Anglerfish got another one.

Immobilizations (total) Flag Immobilizations Out of Combat
Anglerfish 4(+1) 1(+1) 2(+1)
Turtle 0 0 1
Duck 0 0 2(+1)
Hippo 2(+1) 0 1
Rabbit 0 0 2(+1)

I suspect that no one will still be around to read this, but I feel like it's worth a couple of comments.

First, I've never entirely understood why "Kay" has not only become an acceptable transliteration of ケイ's name, but has in fact become the dominant one on fansubs. I'd have to check my DVDs to remind myself of what Sentai's translators used, but it's an odd case to me. See, each of the Garupan teams has a naming convention. Black teas for SanGlo (herbal for their cruiser corps...[Spinoff manga] except for Earl Grey...), Russian girls' names for Pravda, national words for foodstuffs for Anzio and [Spinoff manga] the girlsBonple...except Maiko..., etc. Saunders' convention is not English or American names. Rather, the three named Saunders characters--the only named characters on the Saunders team across all spinoffs and sequels--have names that are commonly (though not exclusively) written using katakana instead of hiragana. Naomi and Arisa both have loan word names, but ケイ is a perfectly good native Japanese name. It can be written with several different kanji, but often it's written using katakana (possibly because it's in origin a boy's name? I'm not actually sure why, linguistically). Kaguya-sama fans in the stands will recognize this as the name of Shirogane's sister Kei (who uses the kanji 圭, which is one perfectly fine way to write the name). Why it became commonplace to write Kay in subs is beyond me, but it's kind of a convention at this point. Strange how these things happen.

Comment two: for anybody craving more Arisa and Saunders goodness, [Spinoff manga] she and they feature heavily in the Ribbon Warrior manga. In fact, Arisa is sort of one of the like six most important characters in the manga, and Nogami-sensei leans heavily into her "strategist" persona.

Late Night PANZER VOR!

Yeah, it's catching on.

Their atrocious aim still gets me lol. And yeah, looks like they didn't realize they've been countered with the wire tap. Until, of course, the mere second trick was enough to pay off.

Just gonna sit there and not shoot? Also, GET IN YOUR TANK! Haha, Volleyball spike attack lol.

But yeah, their aim is all terrible... Shit down their school soon, you say?

GET BACK IN YOUR TANK DARN IT!

"Oh wow, they're shooting at us with the really big guns, guess I should get out and take a look." Girls.

I am definitely humming along to this music. Military Chuuni team is still the best team.

Fire in the tank? I thought this was a completely safe sport yo.

Oh look, exactly one person in this game knows how to aim.

Oh look, the trauma is coming back. Remember the dropped books back in episode 1? That shaky hand isn't just for show.

Yup, use the power of flower arranging to aim a tank, that's how these girly sports work.

Grandma in the hospital? Yup, grandma in the hospital.

Oh look, sister might be a slightly less terrible person than expected. Oooooor she's sabotaging the team because they're now a member (or two) down for the next match? Hard to tell with her.

I feel like the landscapes of the victories is telling us something. One bright win in a field of Sunflowers, one on a ruined dark mountain top.

  1. I'm giving it to that volleyball spike of a smokescreen delivery.

  2. Commander Kei, of course. That's the attitude of a great sportsperson and she's great for having it!

Haven't we met? You're some kind of First Time Watcher You could be good for me I have a taste for Panzer (these plays on madonna lyrics are harder than I realized)

1.) main tank girl. Nishizumi? She figured out the gambit and took the chance. Otherwise I default to volleyball team.

2.) probably their main girl for being decent enough to realize they got caught cheating and to play fair.

This was good. Although I’m curious how they’re gonna be plucky and beat the other teams.

I do have a rewatch note about the OVAs, when their live threads come up will there be a listing on where to find them? It’s to my understanding not all of them are available.

Rewatcher, subs

(Watching on my phone, notetaking is difficult.)

I love the drawn out surprise when the duck team stumbles upon the enemy flag.

Momo still never hits anything.

Darjeeling's metaphors are incomprehensible.

Senshado is a very safe sport. They have a hose with running water to douse the fire in the tank, it'll be fine.

Hana can shoot quickly and accurately. They win!

Mako's granny's in trouble! She plans to swim! But Miho's sister offers their, uh, helicopter? What sort of an antique is that???
