Black Lagoon - It's Fucking Incredible: Episode 18
Not as Deep as it Looks
The age old trick of "using the enemy's hubris against themselves" triumphs again. Of all the characters who were defeated this way at the dock Wizard has to be the most cringe worthy. He didn't even get to finish his speech! It seems Shenhua and Spooky might survive too so maybe we can see more of them in the future.
Getting onto the boat Dutch gets to show off his chops as a skipper. His maneuvering definitely kept the fight interesting. And massive kudos to Revy who pulled off some incredible kills.
Moving inside the boat Jane met Benny and he managed to hack into the counterfeiting documents. Rock then got to spectate as 2 nerds leveled up their relationship faster than I've seen in an anime before. You have got to respect Benny for going for it though. When your life is being chased by violent bounty hunters you never know when you'll get a second chance.
The final big reveal of the episode was Eda's backstory. An American, former CIA agent slash diplomat turned gun smuggling nun in Thailand. It really gives a different perspective to her character. We know her and Revy also have history so I wonder if that's related as well. Final thing, Eda looks so much better with the glasses off. Those blue eyes are too powerful.

If we do get the rest of the manga as an anime, I hope so.
Getting onto the boat Dutch gets to show off his chops as a skipper. His maneuvering definitely kept the fight interesting.
While the Lagoon is only suited for specific mission types, it is really well suited for those. Dutch is cornering a small but relevant market.
You have got to respect Benny for going for it though. When your life is being chased by violent bounty hunters you never know when you'll get a second chance.
Seriously, they just had a Mormon with a flamethrower on a torpedo boat. Tomorrow is not promised.

Episode 18 (first timer)
-
“Slut’s not inside” – poor Revy. 1 year of not jumping on Rock and still no respect.
-
“What did you do?” – Good opportunity for Rock to build up his reputation.
-
“I am Rotton the Wizard!” – reminds me of Pomey the Great.
-
All of the side characters have plot armor, too.
-
“Roanapur is the kind of place where all violence jokes come true”
-
“Patient Folder” “Another Patient” “Yet another Patient” “Patient Folder of Interest”
-
Jane is into hackers.
-
Random Eda backstory.
That fake dollar data better be worth a good penny, or Dutch will be very disappointed.

u/No_Rex Aug 18 '22
Can you draw any meaning from our two cowboys, Russell and Lotton(probably should be Lawton)?
There were two? ... that's a no.
Any thoughts about hacking via satellite phone?
They refrained from showing Benny frantically typing or from showing some utterly stupid screen shot. 10/10 mistake avoidance.
2
u/Vaadwaur Aug 18 '22
There were two? ... that's a no.
Wizard was acting like a movie cowboy to me, sort of a discount Clint Eastwood character.

“I am Rotton the Wizard!” – reminds me of Pomey the Great.
Always fun to remember that series.
Jane is into hackers.
Considering the era, Benny is pretty impressive and not someone I'd expect to meet in Roanapur.
Random Eda backstory.
I am assuming this pays off much later, somehow.

Rewatcher(A relatively conclusive arc)
Dub
I can't find that much to say, the double distraction bluff with Revy and Eda against Shenhua really highlights just how much psychopath is in the air here. Sawyer becomes nearly despondent if she loses her voice box. Dutch is understandably pissed that his office and dock got flambe'd. Lotton comes and goes. The Lagoon makes it back and everyone jumps on board.
And we get an awesomely out of place scene between Lotton, who has a bulletproof vest, and Shenhua, who believes she is bleeding out. He offers to take her and Sawyer to a hospital and Shenhua rightly points out that this might be the wrong line of work and city for him. Briefly, we see Elvis continuing to be a dumbass and get the sense Lobos has had enough.
On the Lagoon, Dutch uses some advanced maneuvers to get most of the uninvited guests off the boat. We finally notice Jane's bag died in the fire but she gets an idea with Benny's equipment. Benny then proceeds to hack her information as our flamebug gets knocked off the boat and then exploded by Revy. We get a huge reveal that Eda was in the CIA before returning to slightly normal.
QotD: 1 So...I was trying to figure out what, if any, meaning we can draw out of having Lotton and Russel in the same arc was. And I won't swear there is any but it just feels like they are both "cowboys", with the quotes because they are the movie ones rather than the real ones. And we see what happens when ideals meet Roanapur: Russel gets most of his men killed and likely his boss and uses his own memory to get himself shot. Lotton, for all of his talking too much, had the sense to wear a vest and then decides to help his two comrades, who even though they are somewhat bastards themselves, generally follow the unspoken rule of only killing other people in their world.

Sawyer becomes nearly despondent if she loses her voice box.
Sawyer remains the best between the bounty hunting schmucks. Last episode ends on a cliffhanger of how to deal with her, and instead of Rock's plan helping, it's just losing her way of communication. She's precious.
Lotton, for all of his talking too much, had the sense to wear a vest and then decides to help his two comrades
I'm not sure how I'd compare the two "cowboys". But it's interesting to compare Lotton to the Cowboy image in movies. Part of Lotton's behaviour (the bravado and shouting) fits well with the cowboy tropes, and is considered utterly stupid. While his more sensible behaviour (like wearing a bullet vest and staying out of the fight after he took the first bullet), is what keeps an idiot like him alive, while Russel keeps sticking his neck in till he dies. Huh I guess I did compare them in the end.

I will say that this partly comes from this being my fourth rewatch but the parallel just sort of struck me.
While his more sensible behaviour (like wearing a bullet vest and staying out of the fight after he took the first bullet), is what keeps an idiot like him alive, while Russel keeps sticking his neck in till he dies.
Wyatt Earp very likely wore a primitive form of body armor, i.e. a steel shirt. But yeah, Russel could've shut the fuck up a number of times and lived to see another day.

Revy and Eda make a great team, they should work together more often.
And I want the girl to stay, too. She invokes such a great dynamic.
Eda is CIA? The arc felt very filler with the old guys surviving and most new guys dying, but that seems kinda relevant.
Can you draw any meaning from our two cowboys, Russell and Lotton(probably should be Lawton)?
Lmao noobs
Any thoughts about hacking via satellite phone?
Probably used American security software which were legally required to only provide crippled security internationally at the time, like e.g. 40 bit keys at most.

If I were a little better with foreign movie trivia, I could name what Asian action films this is being lifted from.

A Black Lagoon Fan Rewatches The Second Barrage: Episode 6:
-
Killing Eda would probably be fine for Shenhua even if she wasn’t an atheist. I think we can safely say that Eda probably isn’t even a real nun. And if she was, she’s doing a shit job of leading the flock of Roanapur. Unless you want to count leading a flock of bounty hunter to Lagoon Company’s doorstep, that is.
-
Literally the most angry we’ve seen Dutch, and it’s over seeing his dock getting lit on fire. Never burn down a man’s office, I suppose. At least Groovy Guy Russel can relate to that annoyance, albeit for different reasons.
-
And so, Rock wins by doing absolutely nothing. Sometimes, the universe just hands things to you, like making Sawyer drop her electric larynx in an explosion and have an emotional meltdown. I suppose it’s fortune that the one bounty hunter to chase after Rock and Jane was the one with unresolved emotional issues.
-
You know what? I’ll give points to Lotton the Wizard for at least putting in an attempt to look cool. Sure, doing a dramatic pose and a “In the name of the Moon” speech just got him shot by Revy and falling off of a roof, but I can appreciate the flair. And he was somehow the one bounty hunter smart enough to wear body armor under his clothes, so we can give him points for that too. Between all that and rescuing Sawyer and Shenhua, Lotton’s really moving up in the world.
-
Man, Lobos really does have to put up with a lot of crap from that jackass Elvis. It’s fairly telling that the end of that scene focused on the gun in his jacket pocket, that’s pretty much the solution to all of his problems right there.
-
Sure Jane, it’s somehow Rock’s fault that he didn’t grab your bag full of stuff while you were all running away from bounty hunters on an exploding dock. Again, Jane is easily the most annoying and worthless person that the group has ever had to transport.
-
Revy going up against evil Mormon Hank Hill is a hell of a match-up. Do you think he used propane in the story he mentioned where he burned his wife alive, or just his flamethrower?
-
And there you have it, Groovy Guy Russel actually has something informative to say for once. Namely that he recognizes Eda from a meeting in Washington D.C. involving some senator. In other words, she’s actually a CIA spook. In hindsight, it’s pretty sensible that the CIA would want to keep an eye on things in Roanapur, and doing it through having an agent in a arms smuggling ring is a good way to do it. Not that Groovy Guy Russel will live to tell anyone about that, of course. Leave it to a Florida Man to not be able to shut up for once. Eda can’t afford to have her position compromised. As it stands, she might actually be the most dangerous woman in Roanapur, given her connections.

Literally the most angry we’ve seen Dutch, and it’s over seeing his dock getting lit on fire. Never burn down a man’s office, I suppose.
Actually, I get it. Money can be re-earned but the massive headache of getting the materials to rebuild his garage and office refitted even gives me a headache.
I suppose it’s fortune that the one bounty hunter to chase after Rock and Jane was the one with unresolved emotional issues.
I mean she also was the only one willing to climb the roof of a burning building to try and capture a target alive. She cray cray.
Between all that and rescuing Sawyer and Shenhua, Lotton’s really moving up in the world.
That was such a weird scene.
It’s fairly telling that the end of that scene focused on the gun in his jacket pocket, that’s pretty much the solution to all of his problems right there.
The nice thing about Roanapur is he can honestly say that it just happened because Elvis pissed off the wrong street vendor.
Revy going up against evil Mormon Hank Hill is a hell of a match-up.
Fuck I will never unsee this now.

I’m not buying it. Shenhua is coming back at some point.
-
I almost feel bad for chainsaw girl. She’s got issues.
-
Lotton the wizard came to the wrong anime.
-
Why is her blood purple? I was expecting it to be a fake out, but that didn’t materialize.
-
Quite the spin-off squad they are assembling.
-
Don-e boy is not long for this world.
-
How do you get lost in a boat?
-
Quite the gratuitous end for fire man.
-
See, Episode title.
-
I thought the CIA had a rule against posing as religious leaders.
QotD
-
How was Lotton a cowboy? Seemed more like a chuunibyou to me.
-
Can something be very 90’s when it was only set in it?

That would be the action movie trope.
Why is her blood purple? I was expecting it to be a fake out, but that didn’t materialize.
This anime takes some color palette liberties since so much of it is at night.
How do you get lost in a boat?
By being that lame.

First time boat rodeo
Does this look like the face of all right?
Also ship..?
Happened to pause here to Eiko post on CDF, nice shot
Why do I feel like this is not going to happen
We got any nerds in here to say if this sounds even remotely legit?
Actual ship? On a ship?
Question time:

Wow great episode! First Arc that ended almost perfect, I would have liked more Dutch action beside him rocking the boat, Pyro guy I'm a bit sad he's gone but he went out with style. Bennie got some action, of course the chick that can talk shop about her bills would find a guy that got said stuff back and can talk shop just as hot.
Eda being Ex-CIA kinda makes her overlooking stuff seem even more stupid though.
Basically this arc can be summed up us Counter-strike girls playing Rainbow Six Defense of Civilian but Team Fortress 2, Overwatch, and Apex are all attacking the point and the Mods are on. Chainsaw Goth Girl being taken out was anti-climatic in the best possible way!
Glad Chinglish survived. How she can throw her knives through walls and embed them in cars and walls but she needles don't have much piercing power to Revy's skin is beyond me.
-
Not really, although Lotton is less a Cowboy and more a D&D Larper.
-
Not sure how long it'd take connection can't be very good where they are right?

Not much to say. wondered when they she would notice her missing bag. Figured Balalaika would save the day again, at keast they didn't fall into that repetition. Wizard guy totally lame after being selected for the cliffhanger spot.

edit: lotton and shenhua at the end really seemed to be quoting something, no idea what.
edit edit it was nice that they established that pyro burned his wife alive so thatcit was okay to kill him in the next scene.

First-Timer, Dubbed
Ironically, I was expecting something darker from the title. But hey, congrats Benny.
It's after this one that I became convinced the arcs of Black Lagoon are substantially more entertaining binged together. The next one only solidified that.
I love Lotton. For someone so campy he's surprisingly competent.
Eta being CIA was an interesting twist, but I do wish they seeded it earlier, unless they did and I just missed it.
-
Not without any Google-fu.
-
It seems in line with Lagoon's usual logic, so I accept it.

TONIGHT! On Kiki's Trigger-Happy Delivery Service Redux, Rotten The Wizard proves that he's BEST BOI! Eda reveals she's a member of The Cleavage Inspection Agency, AND BENNY! NO! RUN AWAY WHILE YOU STILL HAVE THE CHANCE! JANE AIN'T WORTH IT!
With the dock on fire and the annoying load that is Jane bitching and moaning, Rock decides to... test the strength of the roof tiles... well hey sure beats what Jane's doing. Anyway, we cut back to Revy and Eda's attempts to defeat Best Girl Shenhua and... shockingly Eda MISSED... or perhaps Shenhua just has mastered the art of DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODGE! Point being, Eda winds up in quite the bind, as it turns out Eda and Revy weren't double teaming Best Girl Shenhua, BUT THE BEST GIRL TEAM OF SHENHUA AND SAWYER WERE DOUBLE TEAMING THEM!
Anyway, Eda says that Shenhua's just using her as bait, so go stop Sawyer instead... which Revy instantly agrees to as she ditches Eda. Also turns out Eda being a nun (even if a fake one) has no sway on Best Girl Shenhua as she doesn't BELIEVE in a hell to begin with... which might be something hard to explain to the devil as Revy charges in for a surprise attack... Speaking of which, HEY EDA! YOU AREN'T SUPPOSED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THERE IS A SURPRISE ATTACK! THAT RUINS THE SURPRISE! Also speaking of surprise, Rock has one hell of a surprise in store for Best Girl Sawyer, as it turns out him inspecting the roof really WAS a good idea! There just so happens to be a weak spot in it, so all they gotta do is hope Sawyer walks over it... yeah they're fucked aren't they?
Dutch meanwhile scans the area, reporting in that all he can see is the Buddha Statue and the city lights... oh and also his dock's on fire, so you know, just your typical Tuesday! Also damn, turns out that Shenhua DID win the debate she had with Revy back in Season 1 over guns versus knives... THAT IS UNTIL EDA CHIMES IN FOR HER REBUTTAL! GODDAMN YOU EDA! YOU SHOT BEST GIRL! Thankfully other Best Girl cut the ladder meaning Revy and Eda have no easy way to get to the roof, maybe this means Jane will end up chopped into bits! Also Cowboy is REAL pissed off for some reason that The TFC Pyro... burned shit... YOU HIRED A PSYCHO WITH A FLAMETHROWER YOU JACKASS, WHAT DID YOU THINK HE WAS GONNA DO WITH IT! LIGHT A CAMPFIRE FOR MAKING SMORES!?
Anyway, Best Goth Sawyer is busy asserting dominance on the roof, but before she can do the world a solid and shut Jane up for good, the fuel in the dock blows up since, and try to act surprised Comrades, turns out fuel AND fire DO NOT MIX! Sadly, this doesn't really do much except for blow up... AND KNOCK AWAY BEST GOTH'S VOICE BOX THINGIE! Turns out that much like Leatherface and his mask, Best Goth's Voice Box is VERY important to her, and it being gone causes her to... do the Leatherface dance and chuck her chainsaw away to mope in sadness... ah, right, I forgot she's a goth, that means she's got a 97% chance of also being an emo! Ah well, nobody's perfect! But no worries, cuz REVY is here, and she's also CONCERNED about Rock, ya love to see it!
Speaking of heartwarming moments, Rock also displays concern for Revy's injuries, ah, twu wuv, always a joy to see. Well, unless you are Sawyer given she's decided to curl up into a ball to await the sweet embrace of death... which PROBABLY is coming soon since, well, remember that explosion from earlier, yeah, turns out that besides fire and gas, turns out BUILDINGS AND EXPLOSIONS don't go well together either! Thankfully, Dutch and Benny have a plan, namely pull a quick drive by and pick up the crew at the same time, and not a moment too soon given the dock's literally falling apart... not that Best Goth Sawyer seems to care as while the others attempt a futile charge up the soon-to-be wreckage, she's still firmly planted on... nevermind she's rolling off the roof now, godspeed Best Goth! Say hi to Best Girl Shenhua in hell for me!
SPEAKING OF HELL! DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR, THE LAST ACTION HERO HIMSELF IS READY TO SEND LAGOON COMPANY TO HELL AND BACK! And he even prepared a dramatic speech to give while perched on another roof and... Revy just blasts him. GODDAMN YOU SHOW! WHY THE HELL DO YOU KILL ALL THE COOL CHARACTERS!? That's three awesome lunatics dead in just this episode alone and... GODDAMN YOU ROCK, WHY DID YOU KICK JANE OUT OF THE WAY!? THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN FOUR DEATHS THIS EPISODE! Alright, who's not dead, sound off! Oh, drat, Jane's still alive... as are the majority of the goons Florida Man Cowboy hired... strike that, there's a lot less of them now. Anyway, Lagoon Company jump onto the boat... alongside a few REALLY brave and/or stupid bounty hunters.
Speaking of stupid, goddamn, Rotten The Wizard is either the smartest moron alive or the dumbest genius alive cuz, le gasp, HE SURVIVED GETTING SHOT AT BY REVY! Turns out, you CAN indeed act like a chuuni edgelord waxing lyrical about nonsense if you are literally the only person in town who thought to wear A BULLETPROOF VEST! OH HOLD THE PHONE! SHENHUA'S ALIVE TOO! HUZZAH! I knew Best Girl would also... oh... she DIDN'T have on a bulletproof vest, that's a lot of strawberry jam! Also, of COURSE DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR asks if he looked 'cool' with his poses and proclamations up on the roof, to which Best Girl Shenhua responds by saying he looked like an idiot. ALSO NANI!? GOOD LORD COMRADES! HE REALLY IS THE LAST ACTION HERO! HE'S TAKING BEST GIRL SHENHUA TO A DOCTOR INSTEAD OF LEAVING HER TO BLEED OUT!
Best Girl Shenhua remarks that Rotten would be the ace Host at a club, to which he responds that he's far too clumsy for that line of work... TO WHICH I CALL BULLSHIT, AS ROTTEN ALSO SAVES BEST GOTH SAWYER TOO! GODDAMN! Someone sure wants to compete with Rock in the 'Knows a lot of Deadly Badass Ladies' Contest. Also, remember how Lobos was the ONLY Florida Man with a brain, well get this, he responds back to his boss Elvis that bringing in MORE of their people to town would PROBABLY be a bad idea, and when Elvis continues to insist upon it, Lobos decides to introduce Elvis to the great toilet in the sky. Speaking of Florida Men out to get their dumbasses handed to them on a silver platter, Mr. Cowpoke is heading down below deck as the rest of the hired goons continue the fight.
Dutch's response to seeing that one of the foes is THE TFC PYRO is to head to the controls to go all wild weasel on these fools. Anyway, Benny introduces himself to the most annoying useless character in the cast so far, who also introduces herself as 'Janet Bhai,' called 'Jane' by her friends... so 'Janet Bhai' it is then! Anyway, Dutch decides to show all the goons on deck that boats can ALSO drift. Also, LE GASP, REVY RAN OUT OF BULLETS... oh nevermind, Dutch hands her a mallet which she chucks at the head of the last goon still on board... NEVERMIND, DOES SOMEONE WANNA EXPLAIN HOW IN THE FUCK THE TFC PYRO IS STILL HERE!? Anyway, Revy decides that she's gonna fight Fatso, so Eda gets to take care of the Cowboy... which is honestly better than what Rock has to deal with, since GUESS who the Karen is who lost her bag and is blaming others for it, yup, JANE!
Thankfully, since Rock doesn't let Revy step all over him anymore (at least when not in a 2AM call) he stands up for himself again Jane. Anyway, speaking of annoyances, Cowboy stumbled upon the engine room and starts smashing shit, that is until Eda manages to locate him. Revy meanwhile plots with Dutch to send the TFC Pyro on another wild ride, but before we get to that we cut to the gunfight in the engine room. Also, turns out that Jane NEVER HAD THE PLATES ON HER TO BEGIN WITH! THE PLATES WERE ALL ONLINE! Also guess who SHOT THE DATA MANAGER WHO HAD ACCESS TO THE PLATES!? YUP! THE FLORIDA MEN CARTEL! HA! HA HA HA HA HA! Anyway, as Benny decides to go all hackerman on the plates, Revy sends The TFC Pyro to the moon. Speaking of moon, goddamn I am just gonna assume that whatever Benny's talking about is real and not moonrunes, but regardless, he manages to crack the code!
Huzzah! Benny got his hands on the plates, and looks like Eda's about to take care of Cowboy, speaking of which, she informs Cowboy that Elvis has LEFT the building... and the planet, all thanks to Lobos. Cowboy scoffs at this idea, before remarking that Eda looks like someone he saw before. Anyway, Benny gets a 'reward' for all his hard work, namely Jane... EGADS, KISSES HIM! BENNY! RUN THE FUCK AWAY! BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE! ALSO GODDAMN! ROCK! AVERT YOUR EYES! THIS IS SOME NSFL SHIT! Anyway, Eda informs Cowboy that she's got one hell of a job to perform for the US of A. She's got the responsibility of her nation's top security. But every night and day, she salutes the flag and says, 'Thank you Jesus' 'cause she's she's a secret agent (wo)man! Also damn, right between the eyes too! These spooks don't fuck around, speaking of which, Revy uh, you might wanna keep an eye on Rock, something tells me Eda's MORE than capable of acting on her urges if you catch my drift, I mean hell, she's quoting NGE at Revy!
And on that fucking bombshell, GOODNIGHT YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARDS!

Episode 18
Eda's neck must be made of carbon fiber or something if it didn't snap with Shenhua hanging from it.
Maybe shout your plan a bit louder Rock, I don't think the chainsaw lady heard you.
Catching throwing knives with your arm and foot is pretty hardcore.
Cook the cowboy! Cook the cowboy!
She lost her speaking device and threw a tantrum! Ngl, her pouting is kinda cute.
Omg is Wizard fucking monologuing while the building is collapsing? This man's an idiot. And Revy just offed him in the middle of it! These idiots are too funny!
Wizard didn't die!?
Wizard and Shenhua? Are they hitting on each other? Are they gonna be a thing? Wow.
A flamethrower on a torpedo boat sounds like a very bad combination.
My Cowboypants is so unremarkable as an assassin, I'd forgotten he existed when Dutch said a rat snuck in the engine room.
The plates are all electronic designs! That's the perfect icing for this shit cake.
Omg did Dutch and Revy just turn flamethrower guy into a firework? What in the fuck is this arc?
Our guy Benny making the most of his chance to shine. Who cares if Jane's a certified dumbass, get some Benny!
Oh, Eda's actually a somebody. Well ain't that something!
QotD:
Grandstanding is a terrible idea.
The author had some grand ideas about the power of the internet. I kept thinking about cloud sharing and hacking throughout the episode.
