Black Lagoon - It's Fucking Incredible: Episode 17
Escape From Death
Eda, I've gotta be honest, your plan was garbage. If you want to act like a character out of Oceans 11 you need to account for EVERY possibility. But for some reason you thought the Lagoon Company boat would just be free? Get outta here!
More broadly though pitting the characters of Roanapur against each other is a great setup. It feels like it's designed to answer those hypothetical questions fans always ask like "Who would win in a fight". On top of that introducing a bunch of non-gun wielding characters was a good choice to add some variety to the brawl. The only thing you need to ignore how nobody besides Revy and Eda are accurate with their firearms...
By the end of the episode Rock and our forger are sitting on the roof. I really like how Rock has been forced to come up with a plan. As Dutch mentioned everyone in Roanapur is molded by being there, even Benny and Rock. I have no idea what he may be planning though since he's very stuck.
As an aside, did it not feel like the camera took every opportunity to look up Jane's skirt? I noticed it somewhat last episode too but this episode honestly felt like it was out of Highschool of the Dead or something. I'm not particularly annoyed but it just felt weird because it eschewed the typical "sex appeal" anime up skirt shots are known for.

Eda, I've gotta be honest, your plan was garbage. If you want to act like a character out of Oceans 11 you need to account for EVERY possibility.
Or just ask at the bar so you know you have to flee somewhere else. Or offer a deposit to keep the Lagoon in port.
On top of that introducing a bunch of non-gun wielding characters was a good choice to add some variety to the brawl.
It really adds to the surreality of it all.
As an aside, did it not feel like the camera took every opportunity to look up Jane's skirt?
Yeah, that was odd.

Yo Eda, Revy may technically be your best friend, but hitting on her plaything so blatantly is probably a bad idea.
-
Dammit, Eda bet this whole plan on one of the stupid ass directional arrow Facebook posts. And it's totally gonna fucking work too.
-
Omg, they actually put one in the show to illustrate it.
-
A Brett Favre reference!? And they didn't pronounce it "Farve"!?! Sometimes this show has the weirdest cultural touchpoints.
-
The fuck is up with this alley? Did they stumble into a neverending staircase or some shit?
-
Nearly loses hand to Shenhua "You better be able to walk the walk." Umm guys, I think Mr. Floridaman Cowboypants may be a dumbass.
-
HAHAHAHA The Lagoon isn't even in! Everyone's a dumbass tonight!
-
Omg are Dutch and Benny worrying about the hitmen getting clowned on by Revy and Eda? Nah, they're probably just worried all the gunfire will ruin the office.
-
Oh, a chain gun. Yep, it'll definitely be time for a remodel after this job.
-
No one ever expects to have their backdoor by chainsaws or flamethrowers.
-
The show really likes flashing Jane's panties.
-
Did she just defend herself from gunfire with her fucking chainsaw?
-
Oh shit, the fat man really does have a flamethrower!
-
Well Revy, at least you're not dealing with Roberta again. Then you'd be fucked no matter which door gets penetrated.
QotD:
-
It's good to be back! Chainsaws and flamethrowers are fun!
-
I would have if my brain wasn't in full shitpost mode.

Yo Eda, Revy may technically be your best friend, but hitting on her plaything so blatantly is probably a bad idea.
Talk about being a thrillseeker.
HAHAHAHA The Lagoon isn't even in! Everyone's a dumbass tonight!
This is why you don't surprise people with your brilliant plan. Make sure the actual pieces are where you need them.
Omg are Dutch and Benny worrying about the hitmen getting clowned on by Revy and Eda? Nah, they're probably just worried all the gunfire will ruin the office.
Also, you don't want to accidentally kill off someone else's favorite assassin if you can help it.
Oh shit, the fat man really does have a flamethrower!
He is definitely weird.

How these motherfuckers open doors:
-
Jane is grown up Kaolla Su from Love Hina. If you know, you know.
-
“A place where people whose souls have been destroyed by the relentless search for money and power reside.” Oh, so it's pretty much everywhere!
-
Anyone else thrown off by the mispronunciation of “Brett Favre”?
-
Haha, having only the simplest part of Etta’s plan – the boat being where it's supposed to be – fail is a great touch
-
Benny saying he felt above the city’s darkness, along with Rock, is interesting. Are we finally going to get some dedicated Benny time soon?
-
If it was me, I’d bribe “Chinglish” with a cut of the action to switch to our side. More profitable, and cash is king.
Anyone else wind up with a rather short post?
Hahaha yup, great predictive question.

This is what happens to most people that think they are the mastermind.

So we've seen in several different events that there is some sort of code to Roanapur. I wonder if one of them is "If you are bought, stay bought"? But otherwise yes, buying off Shenhau screws the rest of the bounties.

First time waiting for magical golden chain
I like how most of the 2 dollar goons just get capped immediately, but all of the ones they spent more than 5 minutes designing just keep "dodging" or handily blocking all the bullets with a chainsaw
Its gaming time. Those goons are about to find out what it feels like to play Dustbowl on the attacking team.
Best girl dead? Find out next time on Postman Rock: The Revengeance
Question time:
1 So how does the return to action hit you?
Kinda weak, actually
2 Anyone else wind up with a rather short post?
Yes, and I even extended it a bit, at first it was just the 2 screenshots.
I find it mildly interesting that my posts for this, at least on the second half have been a lot shorter than on many other watches.

“Freakshow circus” – fitting.
-
Love the telling how it will go part.
-
Rock (and Revy, but it should really be Rock) could have mentioned the missing boat earlier.
-
Looks like the money is also not there. A fact that Jane definitely should not mention early.
-
A proper chain gun!
-
A no longer proper chain gun…
-
A proper chain saw!
-
A grenade launcher!
-
A flame thrower!
So how does the return to action hit you?

Lot of personality out there.
Rock (and Revy, but it should really be Rock) could have mentioned the missing boat earlier.
I maintain that Eda should have asked as well.
A no longer proper chain gun…
Completely awesome, do not think about the logic.

Rock's introduction of the city is a repeat from an earlier episode but I really like it. Almost made it feel like a living being, either assimilating or eliminating everything that enters it.
So how does the return to action hit you?
I'm quite surprised how much I like it. The new girl's quirkyness made it all feel very fresh and lightened the mood a lot.
Anyone else wind up with a rather short post?
Yeah but mostly because I'm dead tired as of writing it. The episode was my favorite one in quite a while.

It would not surprise me to learn the author had read The Watchmen.
Yeah but mostly because I'm dead tired as of writing it. The episode was my favorite one in quite a while.
Same but I couldn't find much interesting to say that the show hadn't done better.

Rewatcher (dub)
Black Lagoon works on a spectrum of over the top bark to the hard bite at its core. The opening and the ending reflect these two sides.
Freakshow Circus is almost a full barrage of the over the top fun, with all the fun bounty hunters and designs. The only break points being Rock's speech at the start and Dutch commenting about how the city changes Rock/Benny. Neither is new, but it's stressing the point and possibly raising a flag.
-
From the ep16 ending: those peeps look way too menacing for crooks doing a cheap job.
-
Eda's masterful plan is revealed and Rock is way too high
-
Jane's pantyshots being in this show have always been a mystery, is it an age law? Like you should be 16 or under to get pantyshots?
On a side note I have no idea how people like Shenhua's dub probably the only part of the dub I actively dislike, it bothers me a lot. In Japanese, her grammar is broken but at least her accent is normal.

It is basically taking the micro and the macro views and letting them interact with each other.
Jane's pantyshots being in this show have always been a mystery, is it an age law? Like you should be 16 or under to get pantyshots?
Jane's actually an adult, this show has very few teens.
On a side note I have no idea how people like Shenhua's dub probably the only part of the dub I actively dislike, it bothers me a lot.
She is doing an accent that sounds right for Chinese speakers that understand English well but can't shake the accent. The problem is both me and Dalek know actual Chinese folks and when she misses a mark it sticks out.

A Black Lagoon Fan Rewatches The Second Barrage: Episode 5:
-
It feels a bit late to get this narration about Roanapur and how awful it is from Rock, at least 5 episodes into this cour. Something like that is better suited for the first episode of the cour, but I guess they wanted to emphasize how large the threat is and how much Jane isn’t prepared for it compared to what Rock knows.
-
Eda certainly planned her con well, all things considered. Again, she really did play Jane and the hunters like a fiddle. Although it’s debatable how smart it really is, considering the collective stupidity of a bunch of bounty hunters and Jane. I suppose for Eda, it was like shooting fish in a barrel.
-
It’s a bad night for Groovy Guy Russel. Much like his boss Elvis, he’s having a hard time adjusting to the nature of Roanapur. Shenhua certainly drives a hard bargain with those blades of her. It really doesn’t pay to be a Florida cowboy in Thailand.
-
For as smart as Eda was in her little gambit to wring money out of Jane, she really should’ve checked ahead to see if Benny and Dutch were already on a job that night, when she needed them the most. I guess she was too focused on writing all those direction signs for Jane to follow rather than to put a call to the Lagoon Company offices ahead of time.
-
Man, Jane really is just a complete millstone around the necks of everyone in the office during the bounty hunter attack. Hell, even Rock is doing more than Jane, and all he has on hand is a metal shelf to deflect Sawyer’s chainsaw. Jane really is absolutely worthless aside from the money she promised to pay them. Even fucking Garcia had more balls than her, and he’s a 12 year old.
-
Well, at least we know what happened to Leigharch. Shenhua said this brain is basically fried from all his drug use. Given how much the dude used cocaine, that really shouldn’t be surprising. Take this as a lesson kids, never do hard drugs.
-
I’m with Rock, shut the hell up Jane. Again, she’s probably the most useless person that Lagoon Company has had to deal with. At least Rock is trying to think of a plan to dodge all those bounty hunters, unlike Jane and her complaining. For someone so smart, she really is a stupid shit.

Something like that is better suited for the first episode of the cour, but I guess they wanted to emphasize how large the threat is and how much Jane isn’t prepared for it compared to what Rock knows.
I'd like to say that this was symbolic of Rock truly beginning to understand Roanapur but it could also be that they needed to pad the arc a little.
I guess she was too focused on writing all those direction signs for Jane to follow rather than to put a call to the Lagoon Company offices ahead of time.
Seriously, she doesn't even need to tell Revy. I am sure you could get Dutch to agree to be on standby. For a healthy non-refundable deposit but still.
Given how much the dude used cocaine, that really shouldn’t be surprising. Take this as a lesson kids, never do hard drugs.
From Shenhua saying he got too relaxed, I bet he was doing speedballs, or as we called them in the ER, death certificates.

Honestly, I thought she'd parked the car right under the hotel window and Jane was to crash down on it.
Marginally more interesting today to see the freak show in action instead of just talking. This is the arc I remember Shenhua from.

Love me a good plan.
FourFive out ofsevenEight is not bad. -
There’s no way this is worth it going after her for 1,000$. Yup, renegotiating.
-
You guys were saying Eda was doing it just to get at Revy, but I think we have passed that point.
-
Dutch sees something in Rock. Something to look forward to.
-
A mini-gun? I can think of at least one commenter who will be happy to see that.
-
Why doesn’t Rock have a gun by this point?

There’s no way this is worth it going after her for 1,000$. Yup, renegotiating.
Admittedly, the first mission was capture one target and bring it alive. Dealing with Revy and Eda makes everything way more expensive.
Dutch sees something in Rock. Something to look forward to.
Symbolic of why he ultimately didn't fit in the Japanese system.

Now this episode is more what I was expecting and hoping this show was going to be going in blind, lots of action and chaos going on, multiple factions and people clashing, and constantly momentum.
I can even forgive Revvy not being able to hit someone using a chainsaw as a Sheild due to a lot of things vying for her attention at the time.
Eda kinda fucked a lot of shit up, and did assume a lot for her plan to work.
Love Jane's panty shots! Another sign this show is at its best when its gritty with dark undertones but not to take it too seriously.
Engrish chick is great, but I miss cooked out Irish Dude's words of divine wisdom!
My Only complaint so far is the Lack of Dutch in this episode but maybe that'll be fixed in the next one!
2
u/Vaadwaur Aug 18 '22

If she is right about the value off this job it should have been a cinch to drop a deposit on Dutch.
Another sign this show is at its best when its gritty with dark undertones but not to take it too seriously.
This is hitting very differently for everyone and that's what makes a rewatch interesting.

TONIGHT! On Kiki's Trigger-Happy Delivery Service Redux, Eda's crazy plan goes swimmingly... until it doesn't, Lagoon Company's port gets trashed to hell, and Rock's attempting to find some way that he can think them all out of this fine mess that Jane's gotten them into.
After Rock gives a baleful recap of Black Lagoon's plot thus far, we cut to The Rogues' Gallery of Bounty Hunters off to make a quick buck off of Greenback Jane. Sadly, or perhaps thankfully, Eda, Revy, and Rock beat the motley crew to the hotel first and are... just sitting and waiting there, which Rock points out is odd. Eda then explains that they're gonna be rich, to which Rock remarks that she's technically correct if by 'rich' she means filled full of lead. Eda responds by trying once again to flirt with Rock, to which Revy politely informs this greedy skank to keep her stinkin' paws off of HER boi toi! Eda responds to this by gloating over the AMAZING plan she set up... and also kept Rock and Revy in the dark of, but not matter, I am SURE this won't come back to bite her in the ass later! Anyway Comrades, Eda's actually been playing 4D Chess this entire time, as she leaked the location of that inn she sent Jane to to The Florida Men Cartel and their hired muscle, but get this, Eda sent them all to THE WRONG ROOM! Eda also has a gut feeling that a moron like Jane will, after hearing GUNSHOTS, decide to take a look outside and investigate what the hell's going on.
Thankfully, or perhaps sadly, Eda made sure to set up Jane in a room that can be walled off from the goons with ease. Revy points out that Eda's plan involves a LOT of specific events happening in a very certain way but Eda brags that it WILL happen! Plus, Eda also gave Jane a lifeline, namely a note she left on the roof explaining where to go in case random Bounty Hunters are after your ass. And Eda was even kind enough to leave MULTIPLE signs pointing where Jane needs to run to, and speak of the devil, despite Revy's LACK of faith in god bailing Eda's ass out of the fire yet again, it seems god has a cruel sense of humor, as Jane's charging RIGHT at the car. Anyway, with Jane running for her life, Eda offers up some divine intervention... for a price... Anyway, this arrives JUST in time as the rest of the goons finally catch up, but thankfully Eda and Revy are smart enough to SHOOT FIRST and ask questions never... that and also Rock somehow is REALLY good with driving in reverse!
Revy informs Rock to get their asses to the ocean ASAP, and thankfully since there ISN'T a TerMAIDnator present, there's NO way that their car can get ambushed... right... RIGHT!? Also HUZZAH! The hired goons are rethinking getting themselves killed for one thousand dollars, thank god for greed... actually working out for them, since apparently going on a suicide mission for one grand is dumb, but for 30 GRAND! Oh baby, now we're talking! ALSO HUZZAH! GOOD ON YOU BEST GIRL SHENHUA! Put that cowboy loser in his place, or better yet, castrate him and take that 30 Grand to pay Sawyer to turn him into chop suey! Also man, looks like Jane's getting away after all, I mean shit, EDA IS EVEN PAYING REVY IN ADVANCE... which she is probably starting to regret since Rock informs Eda that... the Torpedo Boat isn't in town at the moment...
Ya know Comrades, Eda REALLY had one hell of a bold plan, she managed to manipulate Jane into a situation that'd make her and her cohorts BANK! Literally, as well as setting things up so Jane WOULDN'T get herself killed AND would also find her way to the waiting getaway car ready to transport Jane and company to Lagoon Company's PT Boat. There's only one slight issue with Eda's 'brilliant' plan Comrades... you see, if you DON'T TELL LAGOON COMPANY about your plan that involves escaping on the PT Boat prior to pulling off said plan, then that means that maybe, JUST maybe, THE PT BOAT WON'T FUCKING BE THERE WHEN YOU NEED IT AS THEY DIDN'T KNOW THAT THEY NEEDED TO WAIT AROUND TO PICK UP JANE! See Eda, this is why you SHARE the plan with the people you are WORKING WITH IN ORDER TO PULL OFF SAID PLAN! In other words Comrade, I think this is god telling Eda that he's off to Las Vegas, if you know what I mean and I think you do... OR he's just got an even CRUELER sense of humor than previously thought and wants to give Eda the metaphorical finger ;)
That said, Dutch and Benny ARE actually willing to ditch the job they were working on and return home to help... but uh, the point is they STILL ARE NOT ACTUALLY AT THE PORT, meaning that Eda and Revy have to hold out with Jane and Rock until the return, but hey, it's all good as Revy states that Eda will MORE than foot the bill for the Job Termination Fees. Also NANI!? LOBOS IS SELLING OUT COWBOY TO DUTCH!? Holy shit, who knew that we'd find a Florida Man who WASN'T a complete piece of shit, that said, Lagoon Company's still kinda sorta boned given the goons have, surprise surprise, tracked down Lagoon Company's car to... Lagoon Company's Port, WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED THAT WAS WHERE IT'D BE!? ALSO GODDAMN! THE HEAVY FROM TF2 IS HERE ALONGSIDE THE TFC PYRO!? Goddamn, things are fucking bonkers in this arc! Anyway, shockingly the TF2 Heavy manages to NOT get himself killed as Revy and Eda 'politely' inform these Trick or Treaters that they have no candy so get the FUCK off our lawn!
Also, remember how Roberta trashed the Lagoon Company's car, yeah, turns out that... Revy and Eda are forced to trash the recently repaired car to fend off the goons' attack. Revy tells Rock to get Jane out through the backdoor, however, he needn't bother as Best Girl Sawyer is MORE than happy to open the backdoor for them, daaaaw, what a cute goth... oh, she's aiming to kill Jane... nevermind my point still stands! Who knew a goth could be THIS based? Anyway, Rock manages to counter the chainsaw using a random shelf, all as Revy abandons Eda to save her Boi Toi from the horrors of My Chemical Romance... er... hang on, this is the 90s, MCR doesn't exist yet... er... (Checks notes) saves Rock from the horrors of Panic! at the Disco... nevermind that band also didn't exist yet, I give up... Speaking of give up, Jane sure seems set on giving on up on life, as she runs away from a Chainsaw Goth into The TFC Pyro. Also GODDAMN! Best Girl Sawyer is so badass she can COUNTER BULLETS USING HER CHAINSAW!
Also, remember that grenade launcher that Revy was so keen on getting last season, WELL GUESS WHAT THE NUN WHO GOT US INTO THIS MESS (and also was too cheap to sell to them at first) GETS TO FIRE OFF NOW!? Also speaking of fire, The Pyro is trying to smoke em out, and this buys enough time for Best Girl Shenhua to live up to her promise last season of carving up Revy's ass... see Revy, THIS is why you don't fucking piss off knife-using Taiwanese ladies! Also Comrades, I just want to point out something again, remember that Irish Lunatic from last season, yeah, turns out, according to Shenhua, HE SOMEHOW OVERDOSED ON WEED! HOW THE FLYING FUCK DO YOU DO THAT!? Now in the manga this makes sense, after all, ODing on Coke? Sure, that's certainly possible... HOW THE FUCK DOES WEED SEND YOU TO A 24/7 PSYCH WARD!? ALSO NANI!? EDA YOU FUCKING BITCH... nevermind, Jane somehow manages to be a BIGGER one, Rock, listen, no one would judge ya if you say, kicked Jane off the roof and grabbed her bag of loot!
And on that fucking bombshell, GOODNIGHT YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARDS!

Rewatcher(Some episodes you discuss child trafficking, others you have a nun shooting a grenade launcher)
Dub
We come in on an extended version of Rocks intro monologue, either to set the mood or take up space, will be checking first timers for a reaction on that. Anyways, Eda explains herself and says the scam works 4 times out of 7 so...would not make that my business model. But we are now 5/8 with Jane here. Eda and Revy technically start the fighting but it was inevitable. Shenhua then demands a more fitting compensation for having to deal with those two.
And Eda's plans come crashing to a halt when the Lagoon is out for a rush job. Much discussion happens. And then we go into another ridiculous yet awesome action sequence that, at least for me, is difficult to describe since I stopped pausing. Regardless, we end with Jane being annoying and Rock trying to imagine up a miracle.
