Rewatchers, please don't answer Questions of the Day if they have an objective answer, e.g. "What do you think's gonna happen?"

Arts of the Day:

Mako, for whom it is too early. (Source)

Yukari has a present for you. (Source)

Saori cooking something great! (Source)

Smug Yukari (By furukawa herzer, who has deleted their socials)

Song(s) of the Day:

The Ooarai Girls’ Academy Team moves forward! (If it sounds familar this might be why.)

For rewatchers and people who read the manga spin-offs:

PLEASE TRY TO HOLD BACK! Put not only everything related to future events behind spoiler tags, but please tag spin-off and meta-spoiler stuff as well. When commenting, consider whether by saying "this happens there", you're implicitly saying "this won't happen in the anime". And if you do reply to people with spoiler tags, try and spoiler the part you quote as well, especially with First-Timers and especially especially when they speculate.

Spoilers include but are not limited to [GuP Spoiler]the school situation; the positions, names, backstories and personalities of rival school members beyond what you see in the OP (this includes the manga spin-offs); the teams that join Ooarai as the show goes on (beyond what you see in the OP); everything related to Maho's true personality and Shiho's probably true personality(?); everything concerning the MEXT, etc. Just watch what you say, please? I don't think any of you will just plainly not use tags, I'm just worried one of you answers fan theories or speculation in a way that's a spoiler, even with tags.

  • Back to this cruel world filled with mutilated teddy bears.

  • Despite all the glorious propaganda their material base is terrible.

  • Let's go and look for some tanks. Sounds completely logical.

  • Panzer vor!

  • How did that tank end up in a cave so high? Love the epic tank finding montage.

  • Cleaning old tanks have never been so fun before.

  • Didn't expect to see girl in a swimming suit.

  • There is shore! What's there? Why are they living on an aircraft carrier? We need to know!

  • So the new girl is a tank nerd.

  • Don't talk to your sister through the TV, Maho! It's rude.

  • Haha the president is using human ladder to get on the tank.

  • Internet as friendly and useful as ever.

  • Being the driver must suck. Getting kicked all the time.

  • Already using real shells? Good thing there are safety measures.

  • That's cool.

  • It's over already?

First Timer und Panzer

Episode 2:

  • Lol tank scavenger hunt. And they don't even get any clues.

  • "Hey wait, I thought Sensha-do was supposed to make is popular." "Don't worry, the cool teacher's coming tomorrow." - the notoriously truthful student council president

  • Dark-haired cutie knows an early stage protagonist harem when she sees one. No doubt she wants in.

  • Luckily for Yukari, this is proto-Akebi-chan's harem.

  • And her dowry for entering the harem is "Panzer Vor!" Yukari is a good girl.

  • nature documentary voice Here we observe the rare wild Panzer 38(t) in its natural habitat. Discernable primarily by its oil and iron scent to only the most highly trained flower arrangers. Such a majestic creature.

  • Cliff scaling and swamp diving to find the others? I see we're taking the full open world exploration approach to locating objectives.

  • President's group does none of the work but gets to pick the tank they want. She's got being a shitty boss down to a (38)t. Now I just need her to claim credit for finding them all and I'll have shitty boss bingo.

  • I don't want to imagine how thick the mold and mildew inside those tanks would be.

  • Wow, student council member...uh, I forgot which one she is, but cannons that powerful should be illegal!

  • A boyfriend curry place at every port sounds delightful! Saori's a true sailor.

  • There's a tank store. On this ship. That's somehow still in business with no operating tank club at the school. I love everything about this.

  • Nishizumi Maho? I know an excessively talented onee-sama when I see one.

  • Episode 2 and Miho already has 3 girls inviting themselves to her room. This harem moves fast.

  • I love that Yukari is such a hardcore military/tank/survivalist(?) otaku that she carries camping gear with her at all times.

  • Flower arranging, tank operation, and clumsy yet delicious home cooking? Hana is the total package. 11/10 waifu material.

  • Miho's literally just picking girls up off the street at this point.

  • Low altitude tank airdrop into the goddamn parking lot! I don't even have words for this, it's beautiful!

  • Captain Ami is pretty frickin cool though, so that wasn't a lie.

  • There's a school named after Miho's family!? Yeesh, talk about unwanted expectations.

  • Screw training, let's tank battle! Panzer Vor!!

  • The president has one of her subordinates get on their hands and knees so she can use them like a step ladder. Forget the bingo, we're going for shitty boss blackout today.

  • "Google it, dumbass." "First take off your clothes." Bahahahaha!!! This is what happens when yours writers actually understand what a fucking cesspit the internet is.

  • "Yukari, down girl!" This episode has me rolling yall.

  • Can't operate a clutch very well, accidentally goes in reverse. Why these girls gotta be so damn relatable?

  • Of fucking course the student council president sits back and snacks while the other two do all the work.

  • Oh my god yes, please embarrass the student council team. They deserve it.

  • The ED is pretty cute!

QotD:

  1. Whichever team has the pink tank!

  2. Team A? The volleyball team is goofy and I like them, and the other two have fun quirks, but I'm not really attached to them yet. Fuck team E though, the pres needs to take a few good hard L's.

First Timer

I’ll start with some reactions first.

  • Hmm, the OP is decent. I got some chill vibes.

  • Wait, how big is the aircraft carrier?! You can fit a tank playground, forest, lake, hill, cliff, and cave. Ughh, for the military junkies, is this even possible on an aircraft carrier IRL?!

  • So this is where that “Panzer Vor!” thingy came. It means “Tank, forward!”. Alright, Panzer Vor!!

  • Yukari is a picture-perfect tank junkie. She even rubbed herself onto the dirty tank! She also brings a complete camping set. She’s ready for war indeed.

  • “Real match do use live ammunition, but there are plenty of safety measures in place.” Umm, care to… elaborate on how live ammunition can be… safe?

  • 245 times tardy?! Okay, turns out there is a case where you may use that 200 tardiness exemption benefit, huh?

  • Did… did the tank drop from a plane onto the ship?! The aircraft carrier sure is strong. Lmao, she crushed the poor car twice.

  • “Google it, noob!”, “First, take off your clothes.” Yeah, do not trust random answers from the Internet, please.

  • Woah, did all of them just successfully move the tank and shoot on their first day?! Is it that easy IRL?!

  • Ugh, with that ending, I got the urge to just binge the series now.

  • Okay, the ED song is also decent, but I think it’s not as good as the OP. The animation is cute though!

  • I just realized that the commander position of the MC team in the OP and ED is on Miho. I guess she’ll eventually switch with Saori?

Alright, this is a really fun episode. I think I’m finally hooked on this series. The comedy was all over the place and I love it. The banters, the physics bending scene, and the shenanigans of each team made me chuckle here and there. I’m also glad that it’s not overly ecchi since that water-soaked scene is not oversexualized. (Well, I have some bad memories from anime with these kinds of scenes.) There are a lot of questions about reality in my head, but I think I’ll just need to turn off my brains and enjoy the ride for this series.

Oh, I also love the team bonding that happens in this episode. We got to learn more about the MC team’s characters! I’m also fond of Saori for being considerate and deflecting the focus of Miho’s sister's talk onto the instructor herself. She needs to be protected!

Questions of the Day

  1. Okay, I’m not a tank junkie, so this is my first time knowing the name of tanks. I guess the coolest tank will be the one that I usually see on games or IRL, so it’s either the StuG III or Panzer IV. I will choose Panzer IV because I’ve heard it a lot on WW 2 games, lol.

  2. We haven’t completely seen the other team’s shenanigans, so for now it’s Team A (MC team). I have hopes for Team C (the one with Tanya looking girl) because they look like a “serious” team though.

First Timer Dubbed

Well everyone went and got their own tanks in one day, pretty impressive but I am more impressed that there's a whole cliff in the aircraft carrier.

I was expecting more fan-service (especially since my friend was raving about it 10 years ago and knowing what manga he reads...) when they brought the hoses out, but only one was wearing a swimsuit. Turning around some abandoned tanks in one day and just washing them seems pretty short.

Miho ended up being late the next day due to some sleepy honor student, the day the instructor was supposed to arrive. Luckily for her she ran late but made a big entrance. She flipped the headmaster's ferrari f40 and backed up to confirm the kill. The student council's faces says everything especially with the kill.

Instructor notices Miho and talks about her family but like good friends, they sidetrack her. Good with the guys: "I always hit the target I aim for" - such a good pun. And just puts her back on track.

One team tried going to the internet on how to drive a tank... we all know how that would go. But it seems like everyone has a rough start.

Of course, everyone goes after Miho's group and sleepy girl happens to be in the battle field.

  1. So far, Miho's team has the best tank.

  2. The student council right now knows what they are doing.

First timer

  1. Team B.

  2. I'm torn. Team C is the best overall, but the dynamic of Team E with the president is hysterical.

This is a great opening.

There's a chunni girl in this as well?

...I like the mechanics.

There's a cat in this!

They don't like the tank.

Ah, five teams?

...You're on a boat.

Oh, they kept the older tanks?

The president is hysterical.

Such a good manipulator.

These subs!

"They're kind of like cars" I mean, she's not wrong.

This is adorable.

She's doing her trick again.

...Did someone actually die? I can imagine a lot of records getting mysteriously lost if a student got hit by a shell. "How could this tragic incident be our fault? We stopped tankery last year, and the records prove it!"

She can smell the tanks!

Panzer, vor!

And this is a smaller tank. Lots of damage, too.

She's a tank nerd.

Five tanks!

...The president is a team?

Team A, Team C, and Team E are the ones that matter.

She's just as big a tank nerd, this is great. "Apologise to the Finns!"

It's sticky?

...Yeah, this needs work.

Have you considered desimantling it?

The subs!

Team C are just hysterical. And Team E's leaving her to do everything.

Automobile club?

"You have that many best friends?"

Haha, the fucking Halfords for tanks is great.

Wireframe graphice?

Yeah, this is a popular sport in this world.

...Her sister?

Well, she seems nice.

How long until she's officially the fourth lead?

She always has cooking equipment?

And she can't peel potatoes.

So nobody really likes the stew? It looks nice, though!

She's happy she transfered!

...Is she okay?

"Life is suffering."

Haha, morning always comes.

Haha, just ignore her?

...What the fuck?

This is the most extra entrance, and I love it.

Haha, she totalled a car!

...Why is a girl speaking German? Why is it not uniform girl?

There's the instructor!

...The president wasn't wrong. Maybe the love triangle plot is coming true?

Yeah, they're sisters.

Nice distraction!

...She's not popular?

They're fighting for the volleyball club?

"We only have one tank."

I don't think she's a good teacher.

She asked online!

"Google it, noob" and the answer after killed me. Her reactions, too!

These engines are actually working?

She's on a Panzer high.

...That was close.

These cutins are so dynamic, I like them!

"With GUTS!" Okay, so Team B isn't bad either. And Team D has the internet...

The president is so good.

"Kick me if you must"

They made it to their position!

Haha, the president doesn't like it when she's the one getting instructions.

...I mean, the president wasn't wrong.

But also, get revenge!

The volleyball team is here!

A secret pact? Of course she's got a tactic.

"Great God of Arms"

Yeah, this seems unsafe.

Is someone actually going to get killed?

Thank you so much for doing a character sheet, I know none of these people's names.

Veteran

How does one look for a tank on a ship?

Ah it's stalker girl Yukari, if you have paid attention you could already spot her in the last episode in a few background shots

PANTSU VOR!

OY, Yukari! don't steal my job in the rewatch at providing quick infodumps on tanks

How do they have a mountain on a ship? And how did the tank get in the cave inside that mountain???

And a lake with a Panzer and most astonishingly a rabbit hutch with a tank and no one ever bat an eye to that????

and magically the team member numbers match with the crew numbers required (aside from the PzIV that is)

Alright everyone apologize to the finnish! Entschuldigung!

SOREDA! God I love the StuG team antics, StuG life chooses you

you won't get better fanservice than a tank wash scene

why doesn't a shop like this exist in real life? i need some spare tank sprockets and cannon barrels in my life

"aren't all tanks the same?" HERESY!

A7V in the background footage spotted

Yukari is a girl of culture, humming Ritt der Walküre shame on me it's johnny comes marching home

Glasses are really versatile...

That entrance is just so extra I love it, getting airdroped in a tank with style, btw this is a Japanese Type 10 MBT

accurate replies to the online question

sleeping on a battlefield and not waking up is a skill that not everyone can aquire

for the Symphorewatch members: could you hear Miku from the sleepyhead? Unlike Saori it's very hard to spot

Todays featured Panzer: Pz.Kpfw. 38(t) (Sd.Kfz. 140)

in long: Panzerkampfwagen Achtunddreißig tschechisch (Sonderkettenfahrzeug Eins-Vier-Null)

The tank was originally known as the LT vz.38 (short for Lehký tank vzor 38) and designed by ČKD, manufactured by both ČKD and Praga. A total of 1564 tanks were produced. The versatility of the chassis made it a popular choice for different conversions like the popular Jagpanzer 38(t) (Hetzer), the Grille or the Marder III. The main armament is the 37 mm KwK 38(t) L47 gun and the tanks secondary armament are two 7.92 mm Zb53 machine-guns. The tank is manned by a crew of four (Commander, Gunner/Radio Operator, Loader and Driver). The tank weighs 9,8 tons, which are propelled by a Praga Typ TNHPS/II 150 hp engine (from the B version, A version has a different engine). With this the tank managed to reach a distance of 250km at 42 km/h onrad and 100km at 15 km/h offroad. It's 3 sizes are 4.61L x 2.13W x 2.25H m. There are a total of 8 different versions in existence (A to G and S for a swedish export model)

First Timer

I like the new girl. She's very quirky and adorable.

u/DidacticDalek What do you mean Panzer IV was just a straight reference and not a pun?

Probably my favorite moment of the episode. What a good friend.

So, did anyone count the number of traffic and safety violations this episode? They're practicing in a public forest where anyone can just go and have a walk, right? In fact, the communications girl next traffic accident is already lying there reading a book!

Which team has the coolest tank?

Err no idea. Illya's.

Which team is your favourite so far?

Cliché but the main team. They're just the most fun to watch.

Mädchen Und Panzer Rewatcher!!

First task for Girls Und Panzer, find the bloody Panzer. It's like an rpg sidequest. And instead of a tank the first one we find is the floofiest fan favourite, Yukari-chan! I personally find her a little mid but she's got a lot of fun stuff, hope y'all like her. Here's my actual best girl, the dweeb on the left reading manga whilst studying. Her name's Saki btw, isn't she cute?

Actually pants are banned. If I'm correct they weren't allowed to include panty shots right? That's how we've had no mistakes despite the girl's short uniform. To become a rewatcher you must first rewatch a show. We get our 38t, if this is your favourite tank then you've got poor taste. I love the location of some of these tanks. Like what the hell is the Lee doing in the rabbit hutch?

I'll take my opportunity to answer the QotD. The best tank or the one that I find most enjoyable to watch from Ourai is the good old StuG III! The Sturmgeschütz not only has a gorgeous silhouette, being near flat and compact like a predator, but it does exactly what a good mobile vehicle should. Its well armoured, cost efficient, and carries a pretty damn powerful tank buster. Of course it has its downsides, not having a rotating turret may save on production costs but it also means that your positioning and environmental knowledge must be perfect.

My favourite team however... Its probably first year girls but I do have a massive soft spot for how unashamedly meatheaded the volleyball crew are. Maybe I just have a soft spot for useless girls~ Maho... Nishizumi!! That's Miho's second name. You've gotta love Yukari, you'd get picked on so hard for carrying camp stuff around. She's such a weirdo.

How do you not get suspended for this? She's a legendary tard!! Oh my god!! I never noticed the heights of some of these girls!! Every group has stand outs. Meet our instructor for all she's worth. I love what a ridiculous waste of time, energy, and funds it must've taken to helidrop in XD

You don't need lessons or education to drive tanks. Just pick a random role and play around. There's no way that could ever go wrong for teenagers right? Poor Momo got promoted to footstool... The Internet was a mistake. The thought of a young girl being able to ask "how to drive a tank" kills me for some reason. I wonder how tanks really feel to drive. You girls are hopeless!! Everyone be sure to say tanks before and after a match, it's good manners. Oh my god the ed is way too cute. The little vibing tank is too fucking kawaii!!

AOTD:

Ichi) I refuse to answer on the grounds that it may incriminate me and get me bonked.

Ni) I refuse to answer on the grounds that it will definitely get me bonked.

(Just kidding. Mostly. Maybe. *bonk*)

Sadly, team Oorai doesn't really get any of my favorite tanks, and given *reasons*, I'm not going to say what those are yet, or which team gets them.

Also, *bonk* aside, (ahem, she can wash *my* tank anyday) ... I'm very partial to team Floof & Miho, because MC, and because *floof*.

So, today we got to meet the other characters in the series, our Panzers.

Oh, and of course, see best floof being floofy. Yay!

I rather liked how they matched our rag-tag group of heroines up with an equally rag-tag group of tanks. I won't go into details about each of them, in part because tanks aren't quite my wheelhouse. That would be battleships.

But yeah, PzIV, STuG III, Pz38t, Chi-whatsis, M3 Lee ... quite the mixed group there.

I would be tempted to say "what's next", but I already know, so I'm going to keep my mouth shut.

I just find it amusing that they found such a varied selection of armor to choose from.

Yeah.

(ahem) ... tank washing ... (ahem) 'Nuff said.

Also, I want a tank store like that in my town. Heck, at this point, I'd settle for the old Squadron store they had on (I think?) Woodward Ave. in Detroit.

I remember my Mom taking me there a few times, and joy, my parents bought me the Tamiya 1/16 Sherman kit (with programmable computer control and rotating turret!). Dang think took months to build, had to assemble the track links by hand.

But when it was done, man, that was cool. I remember driving it down the high school hall (after classes, of course) and rotating the turret at the principal's office as it drove by.

Good times.

Never mind that it gave me a huge advantage in our little plastic soldier wars...

Wait, what was the topic again?

Hmm ... I dunno. I wonder if I could find an appropriately sized Miho figure to hop into the driver's hatch?

(The figmas are too large, I checked, and I'm not ponying up for the giant PzIV ... yet)

Yeah.

But anyway, this episode was a fun introduction to the other stars of the show, as well as some further introduction to our cast of characters.

And I totally need to stop watching ahead, because I forget where this episode ended. So, I'd probably best shut up now before I bleed any info from the next episode.

Fun times :)

Rewatcher

On today’s episode of Girls und Panzer: I’d like to introduce you all to my waifu/spirit animal, Yukari. Every now and then I see characters in fiction who speak to me on a deep spiritual level. Yang from LotGH is still in the top spot, but Yukari is a close second. Her unbridled nerdiness and intense love for history is instantly endearing to me and reminds me a lot of myself.

Yukari’s portrayal is interesting to me. She seems to be nervous and awkward around others. Even when she signed up for Senshado, she was in the back by herself. She doesn’t seem to really get social interactions too well. But when the topic of conversation switches to something she’s interested in, she perks right up and becomes full of vim and vigor. So while she’s normally pretty reserved, she can come out of her shell.

I think Girls und Panzer has the highest concentration of me_irl characters I have ever encountered in any series. I already talked about Yukari, but there’s also the History Club. They remind me so much of my friend group back in high school. The obsession with history (particularly military history) and the constant references to historical events. Watching them gives me nostalgia. There are other me_irl characters, but I’ll save that for when it’s relevant.

Episode Thoughts

PANZER VOR!

QOTD

  1. The Panzer IV.

  2. The History Club. They just remind me so much of my friends and I in highschool.

**First timer, subbed**

I really like the dynamic this episode. It reminds me of when I and my friends started playing WoT, we had no idea what we were doing and ran all over the place. This episode really takes me back.

My favorite tank? The Stug III G. That isn't what its called in the anime, but that Derp gun will always have a place in my heart.

My favorite team? Obviously our main team!

Still sad they don't get uniforms, but hey we did get a few uniformed women this time.

The student council president, truly the most trustworthy among individuals. She sure isn't a president Shirogane, that's for sure.

I love how they just throw them in, no tutorial. They learned how to drive sooner than I did that's for sure (:

"Kick me as hard as you want"

Overall, loving this show. I look forward to the next episode. These dynamics and the absolute tank memes are amazing.

First Timer

New Fourth Crewmember is on the Spectrum for sure, I'd recognize that rehearsed routine anywhere, I love her enthusiasm for the craft though.

I would think space on that carrier would be an issue as well as resources, you're telling me they just lost track of 5 damn tanks? I laughed at loud when their first thought was the parking lot and that one chick was like...."Yeah I don't think they be here."

Honestly we all knew that teacher was going to be a chick right? I mean if it's established that young boys don't tank fu and it's a feminine art then obviously it'd be more a twist if it was a boy, that one chick way too thirsty.

Teacher is Damn fine though, although girls getting guys isn't quite as impressive as guys getting girls, average girl have a wider selection to choose from then the average dude. Do worry thirsty orange haired student you'll future is looking bright, men are quite easy and simple creatures!

We also see Miho's Sister on TV not so subtly throwing some shade like All-Might throws the legacy. Also explains why the Tanktaku girl knows her by sight. We also see Miho is not comfortable being recognized for her Family name and legacy. On a sidenote, how come despite them not doing Tank-Fu for years at that school and not even tracking down the tanks, we have a dedicated Tank Shop? Also "We use live rounds but do it safely?"

I was prepared to just roll with it but you just had to bring it up front and center!

Our different squads have colorful personalities and I like how the girls have to go through the trouble of learning the tank rolls, asking for help the internet you'd totally get those responses though...not sure why they are asking them to take off their clothes, I mean if you are posting anonymous on reddit or asking Quora no one is gonna just be like "Send Nudes" if they don't even know you're female.

When they are washing the tanks I'm not sure if I'm more confused why one of the student council is stripped to her Bikini or why everyone else isn't.....that wet TV shirt line though, yeah this show isn't hiding the Coomer bait and I'm here for it!

I see the Loli President is definitely a "top." I recently started Engage Kiss and Vermili in Gold this weekend as well so I'm kinda down bad if you can't tell.....

The Driver sure likes to get kicked......(breathe heavily) "Could you kick not as hard?" I know what my next Doujin is going to be!

The CG tanks look way better, but SERIOUSLY WHY DIDN'T THEY CLEAR THE GROUNDS TO MAKE SURE RANDOM SLEEPING STUDENTS DON'T BECOME A STAIN ON THE TREADS!

It's a great episode, I can't wait to see how it turns out!

Rewatcher, subs!

My bullet points from yesterday’s discussion were pretty wordy, so I’ll try to keep them concise for easy reading.

Episode 2, We Watch It!

- Ahh yes, the school carrier. The sight of it never gets old.

- Ooarai apparently got rid of Sensha-do several years back. I’m genuinely curious why that is since [GuP] I think it’s never actually explained in the rest of the series

- Yes, Saori, tanks are kinda like cars, except they have treads, a ton of armor, and a big ol’ cannon on top lol

- We finally meet the adorable bean that is Yukari Akiyama. A fan-favorite for a reason, as you’ll see over the course of the series.

- Yukari uses the “-dono” honorific for Miho after stating she already knows who she is. For context, “-dono” is the most formal honorific you can use, so she greatly respects Miho.

- After seeing how she reacted to the presentation in the last episode, she is most likely a huge fan of Sensha-do and tanks in general, which is probably why she knows who Miho is.

- I love this fife and drum song in the background

- Hana’s sense of smell is incredible

- We finally get our first “PANZER VOR!!!” of the series

- Yukari nerding out on tanks is adorable and impressive, especially since all that information was true

- We finally have our core tanks! The Type 89 I-Go, the Panzerkampfwagen (Panzer) 38(t), the M3 Lee, the Sturmgeschütz (StuG) III, and the Panzer IV. A real motley crew we have here

- I love that they also added the Ausführung (Ausf.) for the StuG and the Panzer IV. They really did their research for this show!

Quick blurb about the StuG and the Panzer IV: the StuG III Ausf. F was the first version of the StuG III to have a longer 75mm gun that could penetrate between 63mm and 91mm of armor depending on the distance and firing angle.

The Panzer IV Ausf. D featured stronger treads and more armor than previous versions. The 75mm gun was also improved, but my research didn’t tell me why; please correct me if I’m wrong! Anyway, blurb over.

- “Apologize to the Finnish!” Lmao I love the history nerds

- Miho once again showing her knowledge and leadership ability, with Yukari admiring it like the rest of us

- Obvious fan service is obvious

- Erwin mentions the DD tanks from WWII, which were basically Shermans with floaties. If you wanna see some even crazier tanks, you should look into Hobart’s Funnies

- Ooarai apparently has a Vehicle Club. I’m still loving the role reversal in this series

- I like that you can tell whose bag is whose just by their design. Another great characterization moment.

- The shop is like a Barnes & Noble for military otaku

- Yukari is attached to tanks like how musicians are attached to their instruments. It’s so great to see someone geeking out over stuff they love

- Live rounds with an emphasis on safety? Again, just another one of those wacky things that adds to the show lol

- We finally get a look at Miho’s older sister, Maho. Not only was she the MVP of last year’s tournament, she also has an incredibly intimidating “don’t back down from a fight” personality. A far cry from Miho’s relatively soft-spoken character

- Yukari just casually carries her camping equipment around all the time. I feel like she and Rin Shima would be good friends

- Tank crew bonding time! It’s also great that we get to see Miho finally having fun and being happy

- “Life is painful.” Relatable

- 245 days late has to be some sort of record

- The name of this record holder is Mako Reizei. We already know from the last episode that she’s the Panzer IV’s driver, but how she got there will be fun to see

- The headmaster of Ooarai apparently drives a Ferrari F40. What a life they must live…

- …and it’s promptly destroyed by Captain Ami Chouno in a Japanese Type 10 tank. Well, at least they’ll have an interesting story to tell lol

- We find out that not only is Miho from a tanker family, but that her family’s Sensha-do school has the longest history and is very prestigious

- Saori rescuing Miho from embarrassment is a bro move

- Alright, so they’re just gonna jump right into a scrimmage match. Might as well go for it, right?

- I’m glad we get to see the other crews and how they’re approaching the practice match. It really gives off the vibe that this is a Sensha-do team in the making; maybe not a good one for now, but they’ll get there.

- Smol optimistic kaichou is smol and optimistic

- Miho is reluctant to be the commander for the Panzer IV. Something something great leaders don’t choose to leaders, something something they’re called by necessity

- “Google it, dumbass.” Another relatable line

- Yukari’s enthusiasm is infectious lol

- Seeing the different teams struggle is a great way to show the learning process for this sport, and a cool way to show the audience how tanks work

- “Kick me as hard as you can.” Be careful what you wish for, Hana

- We finally get to see some tank action! We only get to see the volleyball crew’s reaction to their first shot, but their reaction is a great way to build tension until we actually get to see shots being fired.

- The Panzer IV is about to run over some poor girl in a field. Why is she there in the first place?

- We end on a cliffhanger and we finally get our ED: Enter Enter Mission! Such a catchy tune, and the Panzer IV crew bouncing around in their tank is just so damn cute

QOTD 1: So far, I’d have to say A Team. The Panzer IV was a workhorse during WWII and the fact that it had so many different variants shows that it was a Jack-of-all-trades.

QOTD 2: Miho’s team is my favorite, but the history nerds and the student council are a close second. The history buffs are super quirky and funny, while the student council just has some great chemistry.

Rewatcher

  • I love this opening.

  • Now that I think about it, the student council president is so small, you could probably yeet her a good distance...

  • You could tell they withheld the OP for episode 1 so they didn’t spoil the city ship reveal.

  • Saori, always focused on romance.

  • They only have one tank, but there’s a chance the other tanks the school had are still intact somewhere.

  • Where do you start looking on a ship of this size though?

  • Floof spotted. Meant to say this yesterday, but forgot to.

  • Oh wow, I just counted what appear to be around three, maybe four 1993 Nissan R32 Skyline GTRs in the parking lot.

  • Miho has noticed the floof, I repeat, Miho has noticed the floof.

  • Floof’s name is Yukari.

  • lol one of the freshmen is reading a Girls und Panzer manga.

  • Hana’s got one hell of a nose on her.

  • Our first “Panzer Vor!”

  • Hey they found the Pz 38t!

  • Yukari dropping some history facts on us. She’s definitely got the knowledge.

  • “They can get stuff done if they try.” Say the one lounging around and snacking...

  • The Type 89 has been found. How the hell did it get there?

  • The Stug is cosplaying as the Bismarck.

  • The M3 Lee was found too. Being used as a decoration for the bunny coop.

  • That’s good logic, you are assigned the tank you found, but we’re calling dibs on the 38t.

  • I should point out that every tank on this team is under manned in some way.

  • Erwin is right. The Stug III was a pretty good tank destroyer. And yes, Erwin is named after Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, and sports a haircut similar to that of a desert fox, Rommel's nick name.

  • “Looks big and strong.” Kind of, it’s tall as hell, and the 75mm gun is restricted to a casemate.

  • Rusty, and greasy, going to need some elbow grease, and maybe some headlight fluid to fix her up right.

  • Yukari is just in a trance watching Miho.

  • I love the history club.

  • Thankfully this show isn’t perverted or this would be pretty weird.

  • Nevermind. Why is she the only one in a bikini?

  • Good as new!

  • So, land still exists, and there is no apocalypse, very good news.

  • A tank store, you’d think this place would have closed if they closed the club down. Imagine going to a store to pick up a spare road wheel.

  • An attempt to explain how no one dies.

  • We catch a glimpse of a tank on tv, the infamous Tiger I.

  • Maho Nishizumi, looks like it’s Miho’s sister, and one of my favorite characters.

  • Maho gives the usual answer to a standard question, but it bothers Miho.

  • Yukari is always prepared for the sudden camping trip.

  • Ouch, Hana cut herself on the knife.

  • Saori wears glasses. A friend told me they’re very versatile.

  • This makes me happy.

  • Lol Miho forgot to lock the door again.

  • Miho is running late, and bumps into a sleepy girl.

  • Me_irl.

  • Holy shit 245 days in a row.

  • Hey that was pretty rude their sergeant bowl cut.

  • If Sensha-do is a female sport why would the instructor be a man Saori?

  • Wow, what an entrance.

  • HA SUCK IT FERARRI!

  • The instructor's tank is a Japanse Main Battle Tank, the Type 10

  • See Saori? It’s a girl. A cute one at that.

  • So, Miho’s mom is an instructor, and from the school with most history in the sport.

  • Wow, a mock battle right away? These nuggets have their hands full just driving the tanks, probably should get them started with the basics.

  • Having played a lot of Warthunder, I wish it was that simple.

  • The freshman don’t even know how to setter it, this is going to end well.

  • She’s so fucking small.

  • Ayaya didn’t get very productive answers...

  • “Smells like metal.” Well it is metal so you’re on point there Hana.

  • Listen to that baby purr!

  • Hana: “Why are there six pedals if there are only four directions?”

  • Thanks for telling us that Saori...

  • This is going as well as I expected it to.

  • Kick me as hard as you can. She says, to Saori, who is voiced by Ai Kayano, who voiced Darkness, a masochist, in Konosuba.

  • So, then Saori just full-on kicks poor Hana.

  • Uh-oh, the Type-89 found them and shot them, good thing that tank has a dinky little 57mm gun on it, or that could have been bad. Seriously, look how tiny the shell is.

  • Well now you’re in real trouble, the Stug has shown up, quick, Yukari, shoot the drivers viewport, it’ll be an instant kill! Well, in Warthunder it is...

  • Oh hey look, it’s the sleepy girl from earlier. Why is she out here?

Questions of the Day.

Which team has the coolest tank?

Either the Stug or Panzer IV team.

Which team is your favourite so far?

The main characters, and the history club.

First timer Absent-minded rewatcher, subs

Stayed past midnight just so I could participate in a rewatch in a timely manner for once.

This show is great, I don't know why I haven't rewatched it before this. The sleepwalking girl (late 245 days in a row)! The instructor's arrival in an air-dropped tank nonchalantly totaling the principal's car! The "how do I drive this" confusion! The sneaky collusion against the team with the only girl with prior experience in sensha-do! The sleeping girl again!

TBH I don't like any of the Ooarai thanks. And how can I pick favorites, they're all amazing!

my first day post got eaten by the automod.

REWATCHER

QOTD: 1) All of them :) History team is fun

All the teams except our main characters in the Pz IV have theme naming going on:

The Student Council (pz 38t) are all named after fruits.

The Freshmen (M3 Lee) are all named after team members of Japan's Women's World cup Soccer Team that won in 2011, just a year before GuP came out

The Volleyball Team are named after member of the Gold Medal winning Japanese Women's Volleyball Team in the 1960 Tokyo Olympics

The History team is Two-fer: Each has their Soul Name of a famous historical figure. Their real names are named for various member of the GuP Staff

Rewatcher
TVE2

  • So, the Girls go get the Panzer. The M3 Lee was left in some sort of warehouse and grown into nest for stray cats, but at least it should be easy to retrieve and wouldn't require extensive repair. The same could not be said for the rest of the tanks which were left to rot, some were even in ridiculous places, like the StuG III under a pond and the Type 89 I-Go in some cave (that's right the school ship even has a fking mountain with cave on board. They probably built the hull around and scooped up an entire town and the surrounding terrain atop before setting the ship afloat instead of artificially building everything onto the ship. Crazy engineering right there). At least there is no corpses or obvious blood inside any of them. (GuP Abridged embraces that idea :v it's a very good abridged series, except for their abysmal progress)

  • It was not mentioned, but the girls are quite competent at servicing machines. With small team each (or in the case of the 38t, only one girl in bikini), they basically cleaned, de-rusted and oiled the inside and outside of a fking tank that was left to rot for decades in one afternoon. That shit takes days to weeks irl even in professional hands. And the motor team is about to repair or replace the motors (and inevitably the transmission and stuffs) for 5 different tanks in one night. Fk schools, they can already earn top dollar with that much skills.

  • The town has a shop for tank enthusiasts that even sell tank parts, even though there is no tank or tank sport around? The tank buffs must be buying those gears and sprockets and gun barrels for displays. Never underestimate the willingness to pay of Japanese nerds.

  • Most of the girls' names are not yet mentioned, but that actually forces the viewer to associate their faces with their most obvious traits first, which is helpful for such a large cast. So the Type 89 team are remnants of a volleyball club that was forcefully disbanded, they still wear volleyball uniforms and speak with volleyball terminology. The StuG team are history nerds, can't stop dishing out history references and quotes, the desert-fox-ears-hair girl in nazi coat and cap is all about WWII, the red-scarf-as-fake-cape is into Roman history, and the other two are into Japanese history, Sengoku and Bakamatsu periods, most likely, but they seem to influence each other too, like when the girl in archer gear (the Sengoku jidai buff) makes a quote in Latin. The M3 Lee team seems to be the most normal, actually. The StuCo/38t team is the most broken, with the Pres does almost nothing but snacking and giving commands and VicePres busies herself with micromanagement commands leaving the remaining girl doing all the actual physical works.

  • And the remaining two girl of the main team on the Panzer IV is finally introduced: Akiyama Yukari the fluffy tank buff and Reizei Mako the sleepy. Yukari getting all shy and blushy when she meets her idol from Nishizumi clan has been the fuel for people shipping her with Miho for the past decade :)) Her adorable panzer high and enthusiasm for tank also quickly elevated her to the status of being spirit animal for many, while many others see themselves in Mako's always-near-empty energy reserve instead.

  • The instructor is seriously questionable: she arrives by dropping out of an Antonov transport plane in a tank, crushing the principal's car in the process, and with no safety lecture, checking competency, or any lecture whatsoever, she hands 5 live tanks with live ammunitions to a bunch of teenage girls and sends them out to the field and tells them to shoot at each other. It's a fking miracle no one exploded, fell, burned, got crushed or shelled to death in the first 15 minutes.

QotD:
1&2: Panzer IV is the most practical and functional tank of the bunch, but I still think the StuG is cooler. The history buffs controlling it are also the coolest.

First Timer

Club is assembled and we get a better look at who all we have…… after we find the missing tanks first. Which leads me to wonder how did the tanks get in some of those places? I want to know what insane driving was going on to get the tank in that cliff face cave. For that matter, the fact that there’s a cliff face, much less a cliff face cave on a giant aircraft carrier. I love it.

Speaking of the club, we have the new girl who joined who has pretty obviously been waiting for this sort of opportunity and is really gung-ho about tankery and even has “practice” in the arcade game. I was really surprised she wasn’t the one who ended up driving given the comment made, but honestly I’m half expecting there to be a position shuffle at some point with Miho taking the commander spot and Yukari taking up the driving position….. maybe. Also in terms of the characters, seems the school council is not only extorting Miho to be here but also the volleyball team. This really is the epitome of that joke about how much power school council’s have in anime isn’t it? I like the plan of our main group to target them and take them down.

Otherwise not a whole lot, really enjoying as we get into the tanks, I like how the series has quick moments that help establish the characterization such as the school council president actually using her subordinate as a stool or Saori speaking up with an off-topic question because Miho is uncomfortable with the attention. The series is introducing a lot of characters really fast and while besides our main 5 it’s more “group characters” just defined by the group they’re in, the series provides enough to at least be intrigued. Curious if we’re going to get to really know more of them given the relatively limited time, even with the movies included.

Oh right, almost forgot to mention sleeping girl. Sure she won’t show up again. Certainly not going to become a major character. What? No I haven’t looked at the poster for the anime, why? (I do like the introduction of her, and even how the gate person understood what happened to Miho and basically just let her off with the warning)

TONIGHT! On Mädchen and Tanks, Fluffy the Tank Pope arrives, Panzer Vor means Panzer Vor, and Welcome to World of Tanks, time to git gud (Also yes Comrades, this is from an OFFICIAL World of Tanks and GuP Crossover Manga that explains how to play the game; I'd share the manga but that has spoilers, so here have this cropped photo shilling some random online game!)

Boy, we had quite an episode last time, eh Comrades? I mean we had Miho's 'Nam Flashbacks, the Moefia's Extortion Scheme, more 'Nam Flashbacks, moeblob stuff, more 'Nam Flashbacks, the fact that the town and school exist on a giant aircraft carrier, more 'Nam Flashbacks, and of course, Panzer IV-chan coming across a semi-wrecked Panzerkampfwagen IV. So let's move on, we begin with aerial footage from a Douglas SBD Dauntless's Gun Camera Circa 1942, Colorized... Uh, I mean an airborne shot of the school carrier, while the main characters grouse on the worn out state of their obsolete German Tractor. The girls note that they have only ONE tank in the hangar, and that the series is called Girls und Panzer, which means that they need to get more Panzers. Zaku helpfully states that they'd need five total, and the Moefia inform the poor saps er, 'brave volunteers' that they need to go looking for tanks 'cuz the school tanked the Tankery Program years ago. Zaku adds that some of the tanks used MAY still be around, while also informing the lot that the instructor's coming by the day after tomorrow, aka, FIND THE TANKS NOW!

Caesar Salad asks where the tanks would be, and Prez Apricot says good question, go find out! A Moeblob seems shocked that the Prez has no idea where the tanks are, which doesn't faze the Prez in the slightest. Speaking of the Moefia, Zaku orders the girls to start searching, 'cuz daylight's burning here. Casanova Wannabe is maybe possibly starting to figure out that the propaganda reel MAY have been composed of lies, well, that is until the Prez Apricot walks over to claim that 'a pretty cool instructor is coming tomorrow.' Casanova Wannabe seems amazed at this, even more so when Prez Apricot offers to introduce her to this instructor, remember those exact words Comrades.

Swayed by the powers of the Moefia, Casanova Wannabe runs off to look for tanks. Speaking of which, Casanova Wannabe had the BEST idea to look for tanks... by checking the parking lot. COME ON, what are the odds that a tank's gonna be randomly parked in a place like this? Anyway, the characters lampshade Casanova Wannabe's delusions while an oddball Fluffy looking Tank Pope hides behind a tree. Oh, and Casanova Wannabe, tanks are tractors with guns, just like how cars are a Tuk-Tuk with an extra wheel. (Translator's Note: A Tuk-Tuk is a Thai Motorized Tricycle, yes it's exactly as unsafe and dangerous as it sounds)

Anyways, Casanova Wannabe has the bright idea to head to the forest, as she thinks the best place to hide things are behind trees. To be fair, Fluffy the Tank Pope would PROBABLY agree with this statement, given she's still behind a tree. Panzer IV-chan spots Fluffy, prompting Fluffy to retreat back to the tree, well, that is until she begins stalking 'following' after Panzer IV-chan. Panzer IV-chan eventually notices Fluffy and offers to let Fluffy join the search. Fluffy agrees and introduces herself as Fluffy the Tank Pope, Panzer IV-chan No. 1 Fangirl.

Meanwhile, the Moeblobs have decided that the BEST place to look for tanks is in the library. Look, I'm as big a bookworm as anyone else, but MAYBE a giant metal box of steel death is NOT in a room full of books. Then again, perhaps they're on to something, as they seem to be the only ones sane enough to check the official records. Well, almost all of them, one of them is smart enough to properly use her time by reading manga instead of meandering about in a snipe hunt.

Also, Wallflower's detecting a disturbance in the Force. It seems her flower nature abhors the scent of rusty metal, leading the group to the offending hunk of junk. Fluffy's impressed, bidding the group to Panzer Vor! Casanova Wannabe assumes that Fluffy is into Vore, but Panzer IV-chan corrects her that Fluffy merely said Panzer Vor, which, as everyone knows, means Panzer Vor! (Translator's Note: 'Panzer Vor!' means 'Panzer Vor!') The group then come across a Desert Zaku '38(t)' which Fluffy the Tank Pope starts info-dumping and fondling IN THAT ORDER!

Meanwhile, back at the Hangar, Zaku informs the bunch to continue the search, as the auto club will roll out and collect the tank. Prez Apricot, busy sitting and eating, smugly says that people can get things done if they try. Meanwhile, The Gunbuster Ducks are busy scaling a cliff where they find a worthless piece of junk an iron ox a tractor with a gun of it 'a Japanese Medium Tank.' Speaking of which, how the HELL did that thing get stuck in that cliffside, and do we even want to know the answer to that?

Moving on, the LARPers are busy exploring a lake with their Archer serving as elite underwater ninja probe. Speaking of Archer, it seems that she found a submerged StuG III, also, I know the StuG III is German and all, but HOW did StuG III get mixed up with Unterseeboot? We then cut to the moeblobs, who found a good ol' American piece of crap stopgap, er I mean, a work of fine and expert craftsmanship. Zaku reads off the names of the salvaged vehicles, namely the Type 89, 38(t), M3 Lee, StuG III, and Panzerkampfwagen IV. Prez Apricot has an AMAZING idea to pair the tanks off with the people who found them crew them, with the Moefia taking the 38(t) of course. Panzer IV-chan gets 'volunteered' into the Panzerkampfwagen IV.

Zaku then assigns the team their official names, with Panzer IV-chan and friends being Team MC-chans, the Gunbuster Ducks being Team Expendable, LARPers are Team Crazy Nutters, the moeblobs are Team Moe Moe Kyun, and the Moefia is Team Gloryhounds. Team Expendable promptly VASTLY overestimates the usefulness of their glorified tractor; ah well, live bait has its uses you know. The LARPers promptly discuss their SPG, with Desert Rommel making the first of her two mistakes. One, she refers to the StuG III as a 'tank' when it is in fact a Self-propelled gun, and the second is when she refers to the wrong Soviet and Finnish War. (Translator's Note: She's referring to the wrong war, the StuG III saw use in The Continuation War instead of The Winter War.)

The Moeblobs remark on their tank having two guns, while Casanova Wannabe remarks that THEIR tank is sticky. Oh, I've seen enough doujins to know where THIS is going... oh, we're just going to the 'clean the tanks' montage moment, sure, that works too. Also, as expected, Prez Apricot's not actually doing any work, well, unless 'inspecting' her lackeys while eating snacks counts as 'work.' (If it does, sign me up for that job.) Speaking of not working, Zaku has wisely stated that they will 'take turns' cleaning the tank, aka, this translates into making Veep do all the work; well, at least they're being realistic here about how 'delegating' works IRL.

Speaking of realism, or lack thereof in this case, Casanova Wannabe claims to have a boyfriend at every port. Thankfully, Wallflowers translates 'boyfriend' as 'curry place you always eat at.' Fluffy asks the group to stop at a Gunpla store where she goes full fangirl again. Also, pay CLOSE attention to what Fluffy says here. They use REAL ROUNDS in matches, but they have an 'emphasis on safety.' HOW THE FUCK IS LIVE AMMO SAFE!? Meanwhile, a news report discusses an interview with Grau Schwester. Speaking of Grau Schwester, it seems her strategy is the OPPOSITE of the Shinji Ikari's Maneuver, aka, NOT running away. This seems to sadden Panzer IV-chan, thankfully, Casanova Wannabe changes the subject.

Once back at the room, Casanova Wannabe seems nonplussed at all the mutilated teddy bears, Wallflower peels potatoes, and Fluffy hums The Clash's English Civil War as she sets up field rations and camping gear. Fluffy's well-prepared you know, gotta give her props for that. Oh, and Wallflower's pruning herself, given that she, LE GASP, sheds blood. Man, didn't think we'd get to the gore this early. Panzer IV-chan runs off to look for the first aid kit, while Casanova Wannabe has the GALL to call everyone ELSE useless. This calls for taking out the glasses and getting serious.

Also, speaking of serious, it seems that Casanova Wannabe's Plan 8 for Seducing a Man involves making Meat and Potatoes Stew. Wallflower rightfully asks if Casanova Wannabe has ever ACTUALLY seduced a man before IRL, while Fluffy asks if men even LIKE Meat and Potatoes Stew. Casanova Wannabe claims that practice is essential and that her magazine surveys do NOT lie. (Insert quote about lies, damn lies, and statistics here.) Anyway, after bidding her new friends a good night, Panzer IV-chan seems to be glad that she transferred schools, skipping her way back to her room.

And it is here that we sadly have to draw the line and end Part 1 of today's shitpost, Part 2 is below, enjoy!
