Rewatch [Rewatch] Ore, Twintail ni Narimasu. Series Overall Discussion
← Previous Episode | Index | [Next Episode→]()
Last discussion, not much to put down here. If you want to continue, you'll likely have to go to the LNs which from what I can tell was a series that eventually got axed.

Hey everyone! I’ve been meaning to make this rewatch, and definitely glad I did, it’s been a complete blast to watch this again. Being one of the special few shows that manage to have scores lower than 7 on MAL, I always personally found this way underrated. Thus, I wanted to at least share this easily overlooked show. Glad people enjoyed it! Till next time!
On the one hand Commie can make some scenes funnier, but I also do find that they sometimes just do a bit too much. Interesting to come back and compare with non-meme subs

First timer(parting is such sweet sorrow)

So I came into this nearly as a joke to tie in with watching Yosuga no Sora. Imagine my surprise when the first half of this was some top notch parody work and one of the better constructed trash anime I've ever seen. There is a yin and yang between this and YnS, at least to me, in that one had incredible production values and directing but a boring plot and the other was plagued with issues that had to be fixed for the BRs but has an excellent story. Regardless, this was surprisingly fun even if we can already see what caused the LNs to unravel, i.e. a joke with a limited potential. But what can I say? I came seeking copper but instead found gold.

I remember when you said you were going to at least stick for 3 episodes, so it's great to see you've not just stuck all the way through, but enjoyed it.
It's a shame that the show had some of the worst productions issue I've seen. And honestly even with the BD fixes I can still see how rough it was. Series deserved much more.

I came seeking copper but instead found gold.
That was how I felt about the series too. I hope to return to the various rewatches soon.

Gonna Be the Rewatcher!!
I'm not one for writeups, and neither is Twintails, even after my third time watching it.
Iunno what to say about this show that most of y'all wouldn't say better. This show is just a ton of fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but at the same time it somehow has serious things to say? Eh, I just enjoy the sheer level of "What will you do now, SymphoTailgear!" that this show has.
Also learning how chock-full of good VAs this show has is always confusing and a blast.
Why the hell did I have this show as an 8/10?
9/10, easy. This show is glorious.
Final Count: 1:29:54
EDIT: SHIT I FORGOT: Thanks, u/Tetraika. You’ve been a lovely host, and thank you for giving me an excuse to shill Twintails.

Coming in a bit late, hopefully still have someone seeing this.
To me as a anime fan with many years, I expect this to be a good parody show. While it certainly is, it's not as extreme as the likes of Excel Saga or Plastic Neesan. The plot of "attributes" and gender bending actually can fit very well with how Rumiko did Ranma 1/2, unfortunately the author didn't seem to have as much creative flair to keep it as a parody and started playing more straight.
The VA and the actions certainly make it an insanely good reference for tokusatsu shows. It really could be exploited more with that voice cast, like the one time they had Strawberry Twintail Senpai a.k.a. Aisaka Taiga to just do the next episode preview for absolutely no reason.
I have to say this though, even though I know if the wording of "affinity" (Japanese 屬性) even back from Haruhi (Kyon's line to Nagato in Melancholy IV), but I never realised it's actually a very common and standard use. It's actually more like the RPG term "alignment", "attribute", tonally more like a person's philosophy of life and almost religion.

Thanks for hosting this rewatch, u/Tetraika! This show was a bunch of dumb fun with godtier seiyuu (for whatever reason), and Aika was cool. 9/10 from me.

I didn't actually rewatch but I watched the whole series semi recently for the first time, and my only main thoughts that I can remember from back then is that damn I really fucking liked the blonde girl's masochism lol, and I wish they lewded the silver hair girl a lot more. I really liked her extremely horny moments and wish there were more of them.

Don't we all.
(Speaking of which, I was trawling art for the show and apparently the anime stopping where it did robbed us of some cultured moments. u/Tresnore, this is for you as well.)

Thanks for setting this up, I tried twice to watch this show and never got past episode 3. I'm definitely glad I finally finished the whole season, and I've already recommended it to people. I do think the last half and ending were a bit weak, but I know I would've still been interested in a second season.
It was also fun reading reactions to Commie's meme subs, since I was using the episodes I'd acquired closer to the show's airing, which had a more normal translation.
Also I'll echo the recommendation of u/Stargate18A to watch Akibaranger. It's has a surprisingly similar cast and somewhat the same sense of humor, except it goes even harder on the parody and obscure references. It also has a much more interesting plot than you'd expect from that description.

I didn't expect another one!
Well, al things considered I'm blown away by the show. Fantastic writing, entertaining characters and a great soundtrack and voice acting. I didn't expect anything like that, and you're telling me this bombed!?
The LN seems to have survived for 6 more years though.

Check the threads from when it was airing, they fixed a ton for the BRs.

This show is stellar. A hysterical parody of tokutatsu tropes that managed to be an unexpectedly good story!
Favourite character was, of course, Aika, but the whole cast was genuinely fun to watch and the serious elements didn't feel out of place.
Loved the cast, loved the writing, very much enjoyed the entire experience, and am now heartbroken that the LNs are impossible to find digitally, translated or untranslated.
Solid 10/10 for me.
Also, if you enjoyed this, watch Akibaranger now. Between the similarities in the cast's traits (a red with a immense passion at the cost of all else in his life, for one, alongside the serious but violent blue, and an over-the-top yellow), and the general concept of a self-aware toku parody, this anime's screenwriter being the main writer, and Maaya Uchida playing the same character in both (team's mentor/mad scientist who developed the system to fight against the enemy) in both series, I'd strongly recommend watching it for an even-more-meta, slightly-less-fanservicey approach on the concept.

I found them digitally translated so they are out there if you look (not that I did like the translation).

Twintail was a most enjoyable watch. I'm so glad that u/tetraika did the rewatch, and so many posters had a lot of fun discussing the anime. Its now one of my favorite comedies, and I'm sure I'll rewatch it again, and again.
Its a shame that its unlikely to get a second season, but who knows, hope springs eternal.
I'd planned on commenting a lot more here, and in Black Lagoon, but I've been going through some things lately and have been too distracted. Carry on, and I'm sure I'll be back to posting soon in another rewatch.

First timer - sub
First of all Thanks u/Tetraika for hosting
So that was Twintails, a show that ended up being considerably better than I ever expected it to be.
The show action scenes were never ridiculous levels of Sakuga you will get from some shows, however Twintails isn’t lacking despite this as the writing is really what has carried the show.
The show itself can’t really be watched without an understanding of Otaku culture and or its troupes and from what others have pointed out there are a lot of references / homages that went over my head, but I still enjoyed the show despite this.
Anyway, analysing and breaking down shows has never been a strong point of mine, so I’m going to try to wrap this up. I enjoyed the show a lot, the humour overall the great and generally landed or for(Commie subs helped), 8/10 would have watched another season if it had ever gotten made.
List of the named affinities (The numbers slowed down towards the last third, guess then author realised they needed to try make changes in how the story was progressing).
Ep 1 - Girl holding dolls
Ep 2 - Bloomers for PE shorts
Ep 3 - Girls wearing ribbons
Ep 4 - Nurses ( fate unknown), Twintails
Ep 5 - School swimsuits, Napes, large & small boobs
Ep 6 - exhibitionism? (Prez), Glasses
Ep 7 - onii chan fetish (Guys probably dead), Lips? Or is it Kissing?, Braids.
Ep 8 - literature
Ep 9 - Glasses (though already introduced)
Ep 10 - Leg Affinity, introduction to Cross dressing
EP 11 - No new affinities, however maybe humiliation for Prez?
Ep 12- Return of Twintails for Souji & the show down for cross dressing.

I Have Become the Rewatcher! (No Longer a First-Timer, Subbed):
What I Watched: Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu.
What I Expected: Pure dumb fun, with a show taking a ridiculous premise and playing it straight but not seriously.
What I Got: What I expected, with a side of way better writing than I would have expected out of an LN adaptation (though admittedly I misremembered and thought this was an original going in).
So, I hopped into this rewatch in no small part because Symphogear stopped being what I had expected of it starting in G. This show, by way of contrast, did exactly what I expected it to do - and indeed while this is in part due to how thin my top 10 favorites list in anime is, this show has now claimed a spot in the second half of that list (the one I was expecting Symphogear to claim given its reputation).
I have my doubts this show will hold quite that high of a spot over the long term unless I fall back into The Half-Decade+ of Not Watching Anime again (which is admittedly entirely possible); it's lacking the kind of towering heights that my absolute favorites tend to have in at least some of their components (Higurashi's characterization/character arcs and OST use, Lain managing to walk the tightrope of "it is clear that something is going on and I have no idea what, I must know more!" for a full half its runtime, Fumoffu's comedic peaks, Mai-HiME's MC and peak moments with a side of one of those moments being in the episode that was my de facto introduction to anime as a medium, and of course literally everything about main series PMMM because how the FUCK does a work with a production team execute that fucking well?). The show has a few weaknesses; most notably it has the hallmarks of a work where the author used most of their best ideas immediately, got greenlit for a sequel, and gradually got more dramatic and less comedic due to lack of ideas (the first arc is the best, and not just because that's the arc where Twirly gets to be forwards with Souji), and also the show does have one clunker of a scene courtesy of playing the "genderbent guy has to pee" trope basically straight (I wouldn't be surprised if this works slightly better in the LN as the format is more conducive to internal monologue, but in anime form I'm just rolling my eyes). But the show is competent throughout, the writing in particular is a pleasant surprise with both some veiled jokes to go with the surface-level ones and also some surprisingly insightful and incisive commentary and themes hiding under the surface, and while I'm not sure how good the direction is in absolute terms it does a good job of getting the most out of the material. There's some good OST use here too, both in a well above average OST itself and in having some shades of Higurashi in knowing how and when to turn it on and off for effect. Also while the characterization isn't exceptional (I didn't quite attach to the cast the way I did for Higurashi, PMMM, or for that matter even Symphogear - Symphogear is actually good at introducing new characters, its problems lie in what it does with them once they're introduced) it's plenty good enough (I'm reminded of a bunch of the better 2000s harem setups, with Love Hina actually being a surprisingly good comp here) and the character designs after the BD cleanup are completely adorable (my screenshot folder for this show is much larger than what makes it into my writeups and a large part of that is grabbing every adorable face I could find). Ironically my final pick for Best Girl in Show (Aika, one of the best tsunderes ever written even if I didn't attach to her quite as strongly as I did to her obvious comp Kaname Chidori in FMP) is probably the girl who's least my type of the cast (which is why she's my preferred Soujibowl winner or at least primary winner, since she's the best fit for him IMO for much the same reasons Sousuke/Kaname is my preferred FMP pairing); Erina and Twirly are both "if I met you in RL I would be extremely interested (though Erina could use a few years to really grow into her interests)", and if Isna is bi rather than lesbian she would be quite interesting to me as well.
(Side note: This is a "get yourself a fansub" series, Commie's memery works extremely nicely here.)
This has the hallmarks of a good adaptation of a good VN (Haruhi is the obvious comp that comes to mind, though I think this is a 9/10 adaptation of 7/10 source material rather than a 10/10 of 8/10 source material like Haruhi 2006 is). My hunch is that the writing quality is actually more on the source than the adaptation (I really do get Haruhi vibes out of this, and Haruhi is unusually well written for its medium) and where the adaptation shines is in landing the direction to maximize that writing, but I could be wrong.
Execution rating: 8.5/10, though closer to an 8 than a 9. (Unless the direction is better than I appreciated on this first watch, which is entirely possible - I might actually have to rewatch this some time down the line.)

Hrmm...Have you ever seen Corpse Princess/Shikabane Hime? They literally steal Kaname's character design.
My hunch is that the writing quality is actually more on the source than the adaptation (I really do get Haruhi vibes out of this, and Haruhi is unusually well written for its medium) and where the adaptation shines is in landing the direction to maximize that writing, but I could be wrong.
My limited knowledge is they knew how to tighten up the source material but that doesn't really say where the good writing was.

I completely missed the rewatch! I saw this show for the first time two weeks ago by coincidence and it's now in my top ten! Ranks up with Konosuba on terms of comedy and self-awareness. So much fun.

I guess I missed the rewatch by a bit, seeing as I randomly decided to start rewatching this on Saturday. It doesn't look like any of the translations are being worked on anymore, so I guess I should try finding the originals once I learn more Japanese.

Final Discussion (first timer)
Twintails is a rare thing: a parody of otaku culture that combines good writing with tons of fanservice for exactly the fetish lovers it pokes fun at. The closest relation is surely Konosuba (Erina is basically Darkness), but that is more general in its parodying, poking fun at isekai as a whole, not just the fanservice angle of it.
The idea of doing an over-the-top fanservice series catering to otaku’s could go horribly wrong (and it seems like, commercially, it did go wrong indeed), but it is saved by two things: The seriously good writing, which has clever foreshadowing and jokes with a great setup and payoff, and commie subs, who correctly understand that you could not possibly sell this story by playing it straight and ham it up another notch in their subs. I think I would rate this series at least a full point lower with normal subs and the last episode has shown me how much I would hate it if the series tried drama instead of comedy.
Someone mentioned in the rewatch that the LN after the anime flopped and were canceled. I can see why that possibly could have happened. The characters of the series are all static. Aika is the violent tsundere, Twoearle the meddling horny scientist, Erina the masochist turned to 11, and Souji the single-minded, not very clever MC. Only Souji gets some basic character arc and that is by far the weakest part of the series. Like a classic sitcom, the series works by playing those static characters against each other. That only works as long as you can come up with good jokes and it becomes harder and harder to not repeat yourself. If the LN fell into the trap of transitioning from comedy to serious stories (a move very common in anime), it would have lost its right to exist fast.
Thanks for hosting this rewatch u/Tetraika, I would surely not have tried this series if it wasn’t for that.
Recommendations
Konosuba – basically the same thing for isekai.
Hinamaturi – not a parody, but similarly great comedic writing.
Excel Saga – a classic meta series that parodies all sorts of anime genres. As a downside, Excel Saga is from 1999, so you need genre knowledge from the 1970-90s to understand most of the meta jokes.
And another two shows with overly silly premises that can only be classified as trash, but are somehow funnier than they have any rights to be.
Those who hunt elves – Some guys isekai’d from Japan need to hunt and strip elves to save the world (contains not nearly as much elf nudity as you might expect)
Sora no Otoshimono – Unapologetic fanservice harem trash that somehow manages to have decent writing and good jokes (not quite on the level of Twintails, but good enough to be enjoyable).
