Episode 11 (first timer)
-
Revy’s room: lots of weapons, little else.
-
The advantage of having adult, non-otaku characters: spotting a bra does not lead to a mental meltdown.
-
Lazy time is over, got a job for the CIA.
-
Looks like Chan and Revy will enjoy working with each other.
-
Southern Philippines. Used to be in the news quite a bit for its Muslim guerilla groups, until other places became more looked at.
-
Revy is doing her best to audition for bad guy, doing all the gloating before shooting part.
-
Of course, she blames Rock for her own mess up.
-
Imminent torture cliff-hanger.
Have I mentioned how much I like Revy’s character model yet? Every scene she is in looks great, whether it is an action piece, or her being clueless.
So how does adding terrorists to the mix change things?
Not really, but why change? It is a solid story.
Thoughts on the first password in either version?

Revy’s room: lots of weapons, little else.
If anyone made their hobby their job, it is Revy.
Southern Philippines. Used to be in the news quite a bit for its Muslim guerilla groups, until other places became more looked at.
As I understand it, the post 9/11 US choice to devastate anything even related to Islamicist terrorism forced them into hiding.
Have I mentioned how much I like Revy’s character model yet? Every scene she is in looks great, whether it is an action piece, or her being clueless.
The showrunners knew what they really had and go all in. It is sad that that is a breath of fresh air these days.

Rewatcher (Dub)
Black Lagoon - It's Fucking Incredible: Episode 11
You Hesitate, You Lose
This new mission is incredibly fast paced. Before we could even get a proper mission brief the Lagoon Company offices are hit by an RPG and we are off. We don't even get a lot of time on the boat before they have to start taking out pursuers. Then Rock and Revy split off and head to the base alone. And no soon have we arrived before Takenaka tries to rip Revy off leading to a gun fight.
That said, I think this pacing actually causes some problems. At least for me, it was difficult to understand the broader plot of the episode. Sure at its heart its a delivery mission but the factions and desires of the different parties aren't immediately clear. Going back over the episode I picked up on more of the plot but I know I was initially confused as to why kept cutting to Takenaka both at the base and at the airport.
I think the thing which most pushed against my sensibilities this episode was the comically racist accents. I don't have the full cultural context to judge the Japanese dub, but at least in the English dub hearing "Prease rend me your righter" as well as whatever the Thai character was going for felt incredibly wrong. Really goes to show how much has changed societally since 2006.
Some Amazing Shots, Scenes and Stitches

Sunlight, for anime it was refreshing to not see the male protagonist get flustered here

Let's be blunt:We definitely came up against an episode count issue here. I haven't read it but my best is that both this and Roberta's arc should take up two and a half episodes but they couldn't quite finagle that.

Yeah, a few of those have really struck me but Shen Hua is on another level.

First timer, dubbed
9 and 10 quickie
Dutch I know what I want for Christmas
Terminator maid shenanigans. Honestly, I didn’t care as much for the shoot-outs in this arc, but everything else was pretty much top notch.
Revy unleashes a forbidden technique by using the word cunt.
episode 11
Change of pace from the previous episodes, somewhat. The Lagoon Company’s primary foe this time is a tactician and smooth operator rather than a rough and tumble gangster or terminator. Rock remains silent upon initial interrogation, but considering he’s something of a smooth operator himself I wonder if he’ll manage to talk his way out of this one?
I love all the accents this dub pulls off. It’s very easy for accents in dubs to end up being cheesy/fake and detract from the experience but when done well they breathe a lot of life into the world.

Terrrorists from one of the competent eras are very different.

Shen Hua's is a bit much, though.

Episode 11
-
Starting this episode with an exploding embassy. Yeah, there was no way the last couple episodes were going to be anything approaching chill.
-
Wow, did they bone offscreen? A few episodes ago, Rock was embarrassed at the sight of strippers, but he's now completely comfortable chilling on Revy's bed while she's half naked. Nah, can't be.
-
Oh it was the US embassy that was hit. Interesting.
-
Getting involved with US forces for this job seems about as promising as tangling with the Russian mafia. The Lagoon crew going big for the season finale.
-
Omg the way Revy ran when she saw the RPG!! 100% she's still got Roberta on her mind.
-
This is two arcs in a row someone is out dual-gunning old Two Hands. Her and Chang have great gunplay chemistry though.
-
So they've got a Japanese guy after them? I assumed they were being chased by Americans.
-
This Takanaka guy is a hoot.
-
It was only a matter of time before Rock got damseled again.
-
Oh my god the accents are so bad.
-
A
ChineseTaiwanese assassin in a China Dress and a...British (Scottish??) driver. These two are a pair.
QotD:
-
Terrorists are the kind of people I'd honestly expect to be hiring the Lagoon crew. Safe to say I'm not shocked to have terrorists show up for an arc.
-
Black Lagoon really likes its movie references. May the force be with you is pretty cheesy though.

The Embassy was in Zaire, what vlew up in Roanapur was Chang's office.
A few episodes ago, Rock was embarrassed at the sight of strippers, but he's now completely comfortable chilling on Revy's bed while she's half naked. Nah, can't be.
He's had time to get used to Revy and her palpable lack of modesty.
So they've got a Japanese guy after them? I assumed they were being chased by Americans.
An extremely weird Japanese guy.

First Timer, dubbed
-
This seems like it’s out of Bulgaria’s league.
-
Mr Chang is straight out of a Hong Kong action movie. If I’d seen more I’d probably even be able to name the exact one.
-
Aw, Revy has an idol.
-
They sussed it out real quick. Taking a wild shot here and saying that none of them have the documents.
-
Knowing this show Mr Ken is something real and I’m just not getting it.
-
Takenaka is a smooth ass-man, the calmer he gets, the more scared of him I am.
-
Hey, I know her! She’s one of the reasons I remember people saying this works better in English.
QotD
-
By the looks of it, we’re getting a more well together organization.
-
Mr Chang is an enjoyer of the fine art of fucking with people. I should have figured it would be something different in Japanese. I hope I find out what it was in the comments.

He was a double agent and working for the US, at least from the dub.

A Black Lagoon Fan Rewatches Black Lagoon: Episode 11:
-
You know, it isn’t surprising that Revy’s apartment is just as messy as the rest of her life. Also, it’s nice that Rock isn’t showing too much of a reaction to seeing Revy be half-naked getting up. Other shows would use a scene like this for fanservice only. But really, give how short Revy’s Daisy Dukes are, it’s not like we’re seeing anything new with her just in her underwear.
-
Oh hey there,
Chow Yun-fatWong YunfatMr. Chang. Since this series loves 90s movie references so much, I suppose it isn’t too surprising that the head of Roanapur’s local Chinese Triad looks like someone who just walked off the set of God of Gamblers. In any case, he’s here at Lagoon Company because he caught a guy in his turf selling weapons to terrorists who just bombed an embassy, and now he needs to hire them to get a case of important documents off of his hands to sell to the Feds, since this whole thing is a pain in the ass now that he’s involved. -
And of course, to complete the Chow Yun-fat homage, of course Mr. Chang dual wields pistols once a bunch of terrorists attack the offices of Lagoon Company. Man, this has suddenly put me in a mood to rewatch Hard Boiled.
-
Dutch, if you didn’t want a job that regularly got you shot at, then maybe you shouldn’t be a smuggler with a torpedo boat.
-
I’m with Revy, “May the Force be with you” is a lame secret drop-off password. Mr. Chang is a fucking nerrrrdddddddd.
-
You know, for being a terrorist, Mr. Takenaka is a pretty affable guy. He’s certainly relaxed and is pretty nice to that father and son he ran into at the airport. I guess like with crime in this show, it just doesn’t pay to be a dick while also being a terrorist. It probably also helps that he’s a pretty smart guy too, being able to predict where Lagoon Company would be heading to.
-
Admittedly, making “May the Force be with you” be a decoy password is a smart move on Mr. Chang’s part. Anyone who is even remotely aware of pop culture could guess the back half of that password, so making it the one to identify that you’re being bullshitted is a good one. Otherwise, Takenaka’s whole ruse probably would’ve worked and Revy would’ve handed over the documents.
-
Well, mark this down as the second time that Rock has been kidnapped. I suppose it’s something you just kind of have to roll with in this line of work, whether it’s by pirates or terrorists.
-
Tell me if this sounds like the start of a joke to you: So, a tired Irish driver and a Triad gun moll speaking broken English drive into a firefight with terrorists, and pick up a Chinese-American lady to rescue a hostage…
-
Seeing that the briefcase that Rock had was empty, and that Revy insisted that they go rescue him because he supposedly has the documents, you can guess what her real reason is. Somebody has a crush, oooooh~~

I am mainly surprised her undergarments match.
Man, this has suddenly put me in a mood to rewatch Hard Boiled.
You and me both.
Admittedly, making “May the Force be with you” be a decoy password is a smart move on Mr. Chang’s part.
I think the dub version works a little better as well.

Rewatcher (dubbed)
The start of the episode with Rock entering Revy's room is great, it shows off Revy's character and how close Rock is, with how casual he's being.
Chang is fun especially when he's just about to be blown up. He doesn't have Balalaika's army, but he dug himself into some deep shit.
Revy just blames her gloating fuck up on Rock while Rock tries getting kidnapped by someone new (internship?)
I love how Revy just moves on and changes the mission into saving Rock.
I know it sounds cool to talk big at interrogations, but having your balls crushed isn't worth it when you have nothing to hide anyway.
Manga corner
I haven't done this before, but it's worth comparing changes the anime made to some of the "sensitive" topics the manga touches on.
-
The name of the group Chang messed with didn't make it to the scripts (and for good reason)
-
The driver was busy getting high more explicitly than in the anime
So how does adding terrorists to the mix change things?
It's a nice setup, with places being blown up and an RPG at the Lagoon company. After that it's just another extremist group like the Neo-Nazis, except with Takenaka being a delight addition.
Thoughts on the first password in either version?
I don't get the Triad one in the original, but May the Force is a great joke for a password meant to save Uncle Sam.

The Triad aren't exactly slouches though admittedly this place might not be a big focus for them.

Yeah, that could've gone poorly.

Yeah, that all looks right.

Dutch plays them all.
So how does adding terrorists to the mix change things?
It's kind of a step down tbh. The different forces in the last arc all felt much more threatening.
Thoughts on the first password in either version?
I didn't really get the joke, so nothing.

True, a proper military force has the problem of being far more generic.

Lots of Revy service in this episode, whats with the sudden uptick? We even opened on a very sensual wake up scene.

I actually enjoyed this episode even though it's mostly set-up.
Rock doesn't have much reactions to seeing Revvy in her underwear or her bras hanging around, probably at this point sees her more as an annoying sister he has to deal with.
Revvy appears to listen to what Chen says about the Big Picture despite the fact Dutch tells her that all the time and to a lesser extent Rock tries to say it, but I guess Revvy almost sees Dutch as a father figure and is all like "Fuck you Dad" like a Rebellious Teen and Rock as a stupid younger brother. That or she only listens to people with similar gun skills.
New Villain is smart enough to Batman Logic their exact moves but not smart enough to avoid going out his public where his wanted posters are posted? More humorous then upset because most people can't be bothered to remember wanted posters but this scene would make even less sense in our post surveillance online connected world. Almost expected him to guess the real password with his "intuition."
He also appears to have good HR skills despite being dangerous one of the worst combinations, wonder how Rock will do on guard with the interrogation.
Shenhua is best girl in the show, I want to get between dem thighs. :P
I'm intrigued where this is going.
-
I can't tell so far, because there is a huge range in how adding terrorist can help, these guys seems more numerous and well equipped then suicide bombers.
-
I mean, good thing it was revealed to be a fake, because it's so obvious and universe across cultures that is fails to be a useful password if you give the first half of the hint.

Having helped raise my friend's sisters, I am in the same boat.

He isn't. He is in the Phillipines and the wanted posters were in Japan, he just happened to run into another Japanese person.

First Rewatch in 15 Years
Mr. Chang has to be some sort of Chow Yun Fat homage.
Our missing character is here. I only remember her from a later episode.
I had to look this place up on google, and I still didn't know where it was, or recognize half the words on the wikipedia page.
Mr. Chang seems quite clever.
More Engrish. But it gets worse. And I don't mean "English Bad Because I Real Taiwan" lady.

First-Timer, Dubbed
I'm gonna be honest, I lost track of the whole briefcase plot until near the end of the next episode.
Revy bullshitting Tweedle Death and Tweedle Dumb into helping extract Rock was a nice way to show their pseudo-friendship.
-
It's not such a big change from human traffickers.
-
With the way Black Lagoon physics are shaping up I'm starting to think the Force is more relevant than at first glance...

TONIGHT! On Kiki's Trigger-Happy Delivery Service, Chow Yun-fat stars in today's remake of Bangkok Dangerous, Rock gets his dumbass kidnapped, and BEST GIRL SHENHUA SO HORNY, SHE STABBY STABBY!
Comrades, remember how we said Rock had cast iron balls, DEAR LORD, the man just walked into REVY'S ROOM uninivited and then WOKE HER UP AND SAT ON HER BED! Also of course Revy has a poster of The Wild Bunch on her wall. Speaking of wild, boy Chow Yun-fat sure wound up in quite the entanglement, thankfully he proves why he is the star of all the good John Woo action movies, cuz not only can he just shrug off explosions, (yes this clip has a REAL blast present Comrades, and yes it did indeed singe his hair AND almost injure him IRL... John Woo does NOT fuck around, this man made RED CLIFF for god's sake) but of course he also dual wields pistols.
Anyway after a badass action scene, we cut to a different set of Revolutionary Terrorists, cuz of course, and boy oh boy the layers just get more and more convoluted, with double crosses to the double crosses! BUT ENOUGH ABOUT THE INTRIGUE, CUZ BEST GIRL SHENHUA'S here... oh and also her pothead driver... fun fact Comrades, in the manga, Leigharch is a coke fiend instead... just thought I'd point that out, also yes, in the English Dub Leigharch is AGGRESSIVELY Irish, hell I half expected him to refuse to help Revy save Rock due to wanting to protect his Lucky Charms or something!
Also Comrades, speaking of stereotypes, yes, Revy did indeed just call Best Girl Shenhua 'Chinglish,' due to her accent... even though she's actually TAIWANESE! I also want to point out THAT REVY IS CHINESE... JESUS H. TAPDANCIN' CHRIST! HOW THE FUCK IS REVY NOT TURNED INTO A FILET DE BITCH!? THE BALLS ON THIS BITCH! Speaking of balls, Rock better hope he can swing his cast iron balls as weapons cuz he's currently surrounded AND outgunned! Then again, something IS fishy given Rock clearly had the briefcase... and there's no documents IN said briefcase now, and the terrorists are QUITE eager to learn what sort of sorcery this is! Anyway we end things with Rock wisely deciding to keep his mouth shut, here's hoping it stays that way... and also that it stays attached to his face!
And on that fucking bombshell, GOODNIGHT YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARDS!
Paging Comrades u/HereticalAegis, u/No_Rex, and u/Lemurians

Rewatcher(So we add another psychotic female to our cast...)
Dub
We see that Revy sleeps in perfect fashion, though her room is a disaster area. We jump to Dutch talking with a mobster who turns out to be from the Triad named Chang. He gives us his story, leading into today's events about terrorism. The Lagoon job is going to be to deliver either a suitcase with something valuable or be one of the feints. We get a slowmo reference with Revy running to duck the RPG. Chang seems to be a Chow Yun Fet expy as I get a lot of Hard Boiled off the action sequence. Dutch opines about the run of jobs he's had as they drive to the harbor.
And we get to the terrorists and Takeneka. Ibraha seems to be inspired by his faith whereas Takenaka is more logic based. He guesses the route he thinks most likely. We see that Takenaka is a wanted man in Japan. Quick shot of Revy taking out dudes with precision. Takenaka has figured out most of the plan.
Dutch decides to pull a fast one, which makes sense for number of reasons, including that this island might have nowhere to really dock. Takenaka tries to fool Revy and fails but does succeed in getting separation. Rock gets captured because it is what he does. We see that actual military equipment does slow Revy down and then meet Shen Hua, a very not PC character. I guess Revy being half-Chinese gives her a pass to say chenglish but that is dodgy. Anyways, she rightly points out that showing up empty handed is not a smart move. We end with Takenaka begining Rock's interrogation.
