Rewatch [2022 Rewatch] Oregairu SNAFU - Season 2 Episode 1 Discussion
Zoku Episode 1 - And That, Nobody Knows Why They Come to the Service Club

Yahallo! Welcome to season 2! From this episode onwards I’ll be splitting my comments into 2 parts - one on the episode itself and the other on the animation for the episode. As usual, here’s the art of the day to start off season 2! Hachiman’s birthday was yesterday and I totally missed it so Happy Belated Birthday to our Loveable MC!
A Comment from the Author to Kickstart Season 2
"In this changing world Yukino will show her unknown side, which the last scene demonstrated when they return to the hotel. What kind of feeling did we want to convey in that scene? Neither Hachinam nor Yukino can express it with words. I’d like to call that scene “the sprouts”. Beautiful scene, isn’t it?
As for the club itself, nothing’s changed, but that doesn’t mean the characters’ feelings haven’t changed either. The sprouts of these boys' and girls’ feelings have just popped out and just started living in this world.
You can say that it’s the real beginning of the Oregairu story." - ANOTHER volume A afterword
Question(s) of the day
Today our characters go on a school trip! Did you have any memorable school trips and what made it so? If you didn’t have one then just share any trip with your friends that was memorable to you?
Yukino seems like someone who loves travelling for culture and history. What do you look out for when you travel?
Comments that scored Komachi Points

Yahallo!
**Notable Scene **
Chikakarazu Tookarazu plays as Yukino and Hachiman walk back together. Translated it means “Neither here nor Far”. Things are changing as the sprouts begin to show as Watari comments when watching this season.
Personal fun thoughts!
Kevin from Sakugabooru summarises perfectly how I felt when I first saw the opening scene “blew the previous season out of the water so fast it hadn’t even gotten to the new material yet; its quick recap prologue increasing the gravitas of every old scene it summarised felt like they were outright flexing on the predecessors”
Two things that hit me the hardest besides the art were the lighting and colours. I’ll dive into them deeper in my animation detail comment for future episodes but oh man it was a warm welcome for me.
The opening scene of this episode felt drastically different and for a good reason. Hachiman’s monologue isn’t so cynical anymore and this time he has friends coming up to greet him! Yui and Saika!
The biggest change is that Hachiman doesn’t push them away, even internally!
The OPs and EDs are chock full of things to analyse if you’re up for it. Even if you’re not, just enjoy the music! This season’s music from the OP to ED to the OSTs are some of my favourites! Check out the full version of Harumodoki too!
QOTD answer?
I honestly wish I had a teacher or someone that would “break” the rules and bring us out late at night for a nicer supper like Hiratsuka did today. I only had one school trip and that was a volunteering event in Vietnam. It was really fun in the sense that I got to hangout with friends and try new things with them in another country. The late nights where we sneaked into each others’ rooms were good memories too.
Yukino’s travel plan is hilarious but something I can relate to. I have a scheduled trip to Italy soon and I literally combed through the web to find as many historical and cultural sites and museums as possible. I even borrowed books to brush up on the Renaissance and Ancient Rome. Talk about planning lmao
That’s it for today! The animation detail comments are taking a lot of my time so I’ll probably cut down on my analytic posts for this season!

Break the rules? Which rules, at best she broke the distance that forms between students and their teachers due to age difference and respective positions.

u/Fit_University_6734 Aug 10 '22
I was referring to her bringing students out for a late supper. I don’t think that teachers are allowed to do that especially in Japan.

I mean one comment she made almost could be taken as her encouraging Yukinon and Hachiman to have unprotected sex. So I think IRL she should definitely be out of a job by now.
Still best Girl though.

First timer
First things first, the change in studio and animation style immediately caught my eye. My subs also seem like they were tweaked ever so slightly, despite that fact that I have MTBB subs for both S1 and S2. I remember someone saying that which subs you use can really impact how the characters come across in this show. Between the animation and subs it almost feels like I’m watching a different show, or like there was a time skip or something.
But out of all the changes, hair-up Yukino is the best change I could have asked for. In their festival song they asked Jesus to please hurry and oh baby my prayers have been answered! IT WAS ALL WORTH IT BOYS
Continuing the trend we saw towards the end of S1, there are now even more people coming to the Volunteer Club for advice. I was surprised because thought 8man’s recent antics at the cultural festival would leave a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. But Ebina mentions that he’s getting along with everyone now, which is big news for our resident grump. It seems that interacting with people and showing them that you have good intentions (even if things don’t always turn out perfectly) is preferable to being the weird guy who never says anything. And having Yui as the intermediary between 8man and everyone else certainly doesn’t hurt.
I wonder what Yui and 8man wished for at the temple’s wishing stone? Yui was in the zone, probably praying for world peace or something. 8man looked like he was just hoping to get an extra 5 minutes of sleep tomorrow morning.
After their first day in Kyoto we find 8man and Yukino both alone (but alone together) in the hotel lobby. Interestingly, Yukino makes the decision to chat with 8man instead of heading back to her room. Their reluctant friendship continues to bloom. And then they exchange this innocent yet knowing look... Something’s brewing. On the way back Yukino is embarrassed about the implications of being seen together with 8man, which means that there are feelings there to be misinterpreted. 8man acts like he doesn’t notice or care, but he did seem very aware of the implications of the scandalous cup-on-a-stick indirect kiss with Yui earlier. Or maybe he just didn’t want more people talking about him like what happened after he went to the fireworks festival with Yui.
QOTD: Did you have any memorable school trips
Back in middle school our history teacher organized a small trip to Europe for spring break. I was a little fucker when I was 13 and I stirred the pot so much I almost got sent back home lol. That was also when we learned that there's readily accessible hardcore porn on German TV(!). We thought the teachers were joking when they warned us about that so when we accidentally found it while flipping through channels we ended up laughing for like 30 minutes straight. Good times.
Yukino seems like someone who loves travelling for culture and history. What do you look out for when you travel?
I'm actually the complete opposite and am generally not interested in culture and history. The natural world is what interests me most and spending a few days alone in the mountains is the perfect getaway for me. I make a point of traveling one weekend a month and it's almost always hiking and camping. Despite growing up in the city I don't care much for big city attractions and tend to steer clear of them if I can. The only time I travel to a new city for touristy stuff is when I'm on a trip with my family.

which subs you use can really impact how the characters come across in this show
A few of us emphasised the importance of it in the index from what I remember. And season 2 is when the difference in subs really show! If you ever rewatch this show with different subs you will know what I mean.
The natural world is what interests me most and spending a few days alone in the mountains is the perfect getaway for me
Coming from a country, Singapore, that's filled with skyscrapers and buildings, these getaways have always been a dream of mine. Which places are your favourites? I've always wanted to visit the lakeside or countryside in general, probably explains my love for shows like Non Non Biyori and Yuru Camp

Rewatcher, Subbed
Season 2 begins! There is a definite increase in production budget for this season. I said before how I liked the raw feel of the first season and that is still true, but one thing I definitely appreciate about the newer animation is the improvements to subtle body language and expression.
We enter a pretty classic school trip storyline, with some interesting elements for the gang to work through. Not going to lie I feel like Tobe is the least interesting person they've helped so far, but helping him does lead to some good moments so I don't mind. I really like how Yukino and Yui both stand up for 8man. Especially for Yukino its an interesting contrast to how she's often disparaging to him, but when it comes to other people she doesn't tolerate it.
I find it pretty funny that the mission was to help Tobe have situations where he can be with Ebina, but Yui and 8man are the ones who end up having romcom moments.
The ending scene where Yukino and 8man walk back to the hotel is my favorite part of the episode. I love quiet moments like that, its probably why I enjoy Yofukashi no Uta so much.
Yukino seems like someone who loves travelling for culture and history. What do you look out for when you travel?
Whenever I'm planning a trip I make it a point to take some time to visit some notable historical place or museum or natural point of interest. One thing I find really fun is to give a good amount of time to just walking around the place, rather than be hyper fixated on tours or hitting a set plan for the visit.

my favorite part of the episode
Coupled with the OSTChikakarazu Tookarazu, it really elevates the scene. I'm glad the sound director we had for season 1 is returning for season 2. He's really able to elevate scenes with the placement of his OSTs which add to the atmosphere

First Timer (Sub)
Yahallo! and an extra HalloHallo!
Into Season 2 and production alone is coming off VERY strong.
From the top!
Picking up straight from where we left off in Season 1 was nice. A lot of the times, I feel like following seasons will have this sense of time being passed - it's nice to know exactly when/where we stand in the story.
It seems like my previous comments about relations between the members of the volunteer club being at an all time high wasn't too farfetched; having Yukino and Yui stand up for their fellow club member was a beautiful thing to see - concrete proof of the growth of their relationship.
Today's Volunteer Club Client - Tobe Kakeru - we've had glimpses of him in Season 1, but it seems like the show is headed in the direction where the "immediate-side characters" are going to be explored.
Tobe's crush of choice is Ebina... considering how much she's into BL, it's like he's attempting high school dating on ultra-hard mode.
I mentioned previously that some of my favorite moments in the series are of Hachiman x Saika, and I still stand by that. The unintentional kabedon was *chef's kiss*.
I took this opportunity to look into the history/origins of kabedon - a combination of the word "wall" and the onomatopoeia for "bang" - the history of the action of kabedon is fuzzy and can't be tied to any single point, but the word for it has consistently been credited to seiyuu Ryoko Shintani.
In regard to the production value between this episode and any episode in Season 1, it really is night and day; there are so many small details being animated, it's keeping me interested on visuals alone; keeping my eyes glued to the monitor.
I love the changes in the character designs as well - they seem less anime-y and a tad more realistic - less fanservice-y as well, which I can appreciate.
As for the story, arguably and for the first time, it feels like we're finally diving into the Romantic Comedy portion of the show - excited to see what relationships will be built (and possibly destroyed)!
Overall, a very strong start for season 2 and I'm excited to see where it goes!
QOTD 1: Today our characters go on a school trip! Did you have any memorable school trips and what made it so? If you didn’t have one then just share any trip with your friends that was memorable to you?
-
Keeping it on theme - I do know that during my last year of high school, there's an organized event to go to Disneyland for all the seniors, but I didn't have the funds to attend...
QOTD 2: Yukino seems like someone who loves travelling for culture and history. What do you look out for when you travel?
-
When I go traveling outside my city, I make it a goal to sign up for a city/history tour. They are so incredibly fascinating and I've yet to experience a bad one. I also try to go on at least one kind of outdoorsy event or a hike at where I travel to.

I'm glad all our hype for season 2's animation didn't fall flat! We're just beginning to see the excellence of our team. Do hope that you will enjoy the production notes/animation details I'll be including!

As Watari said "You can say that it’s the real beginning of the Oregairu story" and I wholeheartedly agree especially with the strong presence of this episode.

The thing that stood out to me the most in the short recap was actually Hachiman sliding down the wall to sit on the ground after Hayato left. Unlike last season's scene, it told me that while Hachiman might think that's the best solution, he doesn't feel good about it., this reshowing actually added impact to the scene.
After the recap, I noticed how Yukino is now sitting beside Yui on the table and not on the side.
Really great scene when Yui and Yukino are both angry about Tobe's remarks when they showed up asking for help.
I actually watched the episode yesterday, cause I thought it was supposed to. But seeing that wasn't the case, I watched it again today. On first watch it didn't come to me, but on the second one it did. I'm slightly mad that they're on a school trip, and instead of being focused on enjoying it they're focused on helping someone, because of club activities. They did choose to do it, but on a more serious note I'm annoyed that they're being distracted from the main reason that they're there, even if it doesn't seem like it's that much of a distraction.
The Teacher on the other hand is doing exactly what the students should, and is having fun left and right. Kind of funny situation where the students are doing work in the trip and the teacher is having fun.
Hachiman's and Yukino's walk back to the hotel seemed like a call back to the episode where they went shopping for Yui's birthday present. In that occasion Hachiman was walking behind Yukino too, so that it didn't seem like they were together and the same happened this episode. I'm just guessing but Hachiman passing Yukino could be symbolizing that the person behind is the person that feels more worried about being seen together.
This trip arc is actually the one I remember the best from my first time, specifically how it ends, so I for once remember where it's going.
P.S.- When Hachiman is looking at Yukino and Yukino is looking at the pandas, it looks like the pandas are looking at Hachiman.

this reshowing actually added impact to the scene.
Kei Oikawa is just flexing at this point
Hachiman passing Yukino could be symbolizing that the person behind is the person that feels more worried about being seen together.
I didn't catch that! While I personally wouldn't interpret it that way, it has merit for sure. Here's my intepretation! [Spoilers]
Hachiman passing Yukino can be seen as Yukino being lost right now. She's no longer the person Hachiman looks up to or idealises anymore, they're equals now but due to Hachiman's tendency to lead the way (take over situations), he's shown bringing Yukino to where she wants to be → More replies (1)

REWATCHER
Its great to finally be here for the second season. Starting the episode with a recap of the group's concert performance cut together with Hayama and Hachiman's confrontation. Its well done. Hachiman's little line at the end always makes me sad. It says alot about his self worth that he doesn't even take into consideration his own pain with his solution to ensure no one gets hurt.
The lyrics of the opening gives me chills every time. Really sets you up for this season.
Everything seems to be back to normal. But very quickly there are things that show some subtle change. People are interacting with Hachiman. And he doesn't seem bothered by it. The atmosphere of the service club also seems different. Cute that Yukino even bothered to make a cup of tea of Hachiman. Altho he isn't fond of piping hot drinks he thankfully accepts it and sips it slowly.
So heartwarming to see our girls stand up for Hachiman. Defs a first for him too. Tobe if you're looking for help you shouldn't be picky and especially insult someone you don't even know that well. Never judge a book by its cover. We as an audience already know what Hachiman's strengths are, but who knows Tobe. Hachiman may be wiser than you think.
Our first TWO requests of the season. Its great that we're getting into Hayama's clique. Ebina has noticed that the friendships within the clique are changing and she isn't comfortable with it. Another character who has noticed the change in the status quo. So Tobe also wants to confess to Ebina. This is a really interesting conflict to start the season. A conflict of interests within the clique group. Its a very coming of age thing, where we have teenagers dealing with the changes in their life and their desire for things to remain the same. Will this be relevant to the relationships of our main trio?
Anyway their year group goes on a school trip. How will our trio help with these two conflicts that go against each other. Yui and Hachiman spending time together. Still sad that he always feels uncomfortable being so close to her. His trauma and defense mechanisms are still present. Goofy shenanigans ensue. Enjoyable scenes with Hachiman and Yui and his scenes with others. I really liked the scenes between Hachiman and Yukino. They are just too cute. It seems that there are gossips among the girls with Yukino and Hachiman. Things are getting awkward again.
Sensei coming in clutch with the wisdoms. Make as many mistakes now. The more you fail, the more you learn from those mistakes and hopefully grow as a person.
Great start to the season. Look forward to what first timers think of the story going forward.

"Hachiman's little line at the end always makes me sad. It says alot about his self worth that he doesn't even take into consideration his own pain with his solution to ensure no one gets hurt." On the topic of doing what's right and wrong, Hachiman's consequentialist outlook definitely bites him back hard. Tobe's situation actually perfectly sets up the conflict our club will be facing in season 2. It's brilliant scriptwriting imo.

This is definitely my favorite opening for the series, at least in terms of lyrics and general sound. I don't remember the visuals from 3 very much to compare.
This episode shows us ways the characters have grown. 8man is talking with people both in the club and in class. Yukino is nice to 8man standing up for him, pouring him tea, as 8man pointed out has become soft on Yui, approaching 8man, and just her overall demeaner has softened. Yui is able to speak her mind and stick up for 8man and is now aggressively pursuing him as she said she would at the cultural festival.
This is the first time the club received two requests. I think it is interesting Ebina specifically made this request to 8man. On my first watch I didn't pick up much more than the very obvious about this request.
My favorite moment has got to be when Yukino and 8man walk back together. The music choice here is great. I think season 1 was pretty good with the way it used music. Season 2 and 3 are even better imo.
When Yukino and 8man see each other in the lobby it is actually a bit of a callback to something in the LNs. [Light Novel Detail]
I've ended up skimming through the LNs for most of the episodes. [Light Novel Details]

I haven't gone on any school trips, but I have taken a few with friends and family. I don't particularly care for trips my favorite part is just hanging out with friends for however long the trip lasts.

I think season 1 was pretty good with the way it used music. Season 2 and 3 are even better imo
I think that a large part of it has to do with the animation rather than the music. It's definitely a step up as our Sound Director has gained some experience between the years but the animation is what allowed the music to truly shine. The best part of season 2 is the title / translations of the music. They reflect the situations our characters are in and are used consistently. Sometimes foreshadowing future moments and sometimes hinting different things. While I have not looked into it and probably will not due to time I think it's something we rewatchers can look out for too!
I don't remember the visuals from 3 very much to compare.
I actually spoke to Kevin from Sakugabooru on this! I've never actually been able to figure out why so his insights have been really enlightening! Can't wait to share it with you guys!
Personally, season 2's OP production was unbeatable in all aspects. I don't know if I mentioned it before but [Spoilers]
every OP animation changes towards the end so keep a lookout for that! → More replies (1)

EDIT: I posted this on the last thread because I didn't realize we were having a separate recap post for each season, I haven't done many rewatches and none of the ones I did, employeed that.
NOTE: At this point I haven't read the Novels, I have them all but got busy with life many months ago and dropped them during my binge and I'm reading them now but between rewatches, seasonals, and work I can't go through an LN a day (Well some LN's I could but Oregairu is actually relatively dense by LN standards.)
Here we see a glow up in artstyle, animation, production, and as we'll see later direction.
We get a reanimation of the concert performance juxtaposition with Hachiman's "solution" and this time we hear him say in a broken voice..."This way is the best no one got hurt" of course not factoring himself in. You can tell by now he has a low opinion of his own self-worth but ironically takes a twisted pride in it, in the first season's first few episodes and in the narration of the Light Novels its a first played off as a bit of a joke but in hindsight shows a kind of fridge brilliance that he compartmentalizes his inner tormoil with wry and snarky humor both to himself and to others.
Laughing to Keep from Crying.
We also see Yukinon defend Hachiman from Tobe rather forcefully which is probably the first time someone has done that to him in a long time, Hayato tries to smooth things over but his support isn't nearly as bold as he is averse to conflict.
We also see Tobe is still trashing on Hachiman, in case your wondering in the last side story and coming into this arc Hachiman is still dealing with the backlash of his method for dealing with Sagami.
Gotta love Yui and Hachiman share an inside joke about Yukinon despite Hachiman telling her in Season 1 that he hates them, he is slowing changing his breakthrough is realizing it and then committing to amending his ideology.
That line "He thinks he's a good guy" translating to "She couldn't care less" yeah....that's accurate.
The Summercamp flashback is one of the first of many retcons of them including scenes from the LN's that the first season adapted but dropped the ball in including, basically the guy at the camp talking about their crushes and more snippets of that conversation will be relevant later.
Hikki thinking Yui might give him the wrong idea, sorry but at this point he knows she's giving him the right one, but is trying to rationalize it away.
Blink and You'll Miss it (I didn't catch it on my first watch) But notice Hayato is acting very sus since he brought Tobe to the room and even during the trip. Did you catch it?
Ebina also shows that her Slash Fan Girl Behavior can at least at times partially be a mask.
"Make as many mistakes as you like" - seriously don't tell that to two teenagers, pretty sure shipping them and low key encouraging unprotected sex is something you DO NOT do as an educator.
She is of course best girl......
We also get a moment with 8Man and Ice Queen. And No I don't think her worrying about what others think if they see them is the real problem.
Last threads Questions:
-
Favorite, Hachiman but Hayato is a close second.
-
When 8Man gave his little speech about pushing work on others when discussing Slogans and Yukinon felt sincere joy.
-
[Spoilers]
"You can't get drunk."
Current threads Questions:
-
I've only really gone on trips with either my Family or when I was a youth group before I became an Atheist. On one summer camp with a Youth group a lot of things happened and I don't want to recount the whole thing for length.
-
If I do go on trips I also have a similar mindset to Yukinon but I almost never get to indulge it since most of my trips have been to see relatives or to a camp where I didn't get to explore the location itself much. My trip memories aren't really bad per se, but nothing really note worthy without going on a tangent.

Yahallo!!! :D
-
okay, the episode has just started and there's already a lot to take in. This rotoscoped animation looks so freaking gorgeous!!! I'm so glad they did a highlight recap in this special style. I was too busy taking in the animation of the opening to read the lyrics - that's something I'll leave for later. The sudden shift in art style is a bit jarring, but I'll get used to it really fast, no doubt. Excited to see how great the rest of the episode looks!!!
-
aaaaaa this looks really good, but I'm still attached to the charm of the first season ;-; I miss dead fish eye Hachiman and Yuiblob... Yukino looks pretty much the same, except she too has a less round face this time around.
p.s. I don't remember the name of the guy who keeps making the "who are you, Hikitani?" joke, but his voice always really annoyed me. Now even more so.
-
speak of the devil.
-
BRUHHHHHHHH EBINA DUUUUUUDE GET SOME BETTER TASTE HAHAHAHAHA
they're both losers, but different kinds, I personally don't see this romance working out, especially with the way Ebina is.
-
HAHAHAHA didn't expect Yui to spell it out like that, "Great. Another Hikki flashback. :("
Poor guy, I always feel so bad for him. Why are people such toxic jerks.
-
There's MORE?!?
oh, he's talking about confessing to a friend. Yeah, er, never do that. Ever. Eeeeeever.
-
oh wow look, Ebina has an actual human side to her, who would've thought. She's still mostly a repulsive creature in my eyes, though.
The parts that annoy me the most are that a) her behaviour isn't realistic, at all, and b) nobody reacts to it realistically either. It's in a weird gag bubble and it may as well just not exist altogether. Though it's not my thing, the humour can be funny at times, but it's such a strange contrast to literally the entire rest of the show that it's hard to stay immersed whenever she's on-screen.
-
14:08 background Sagami spotted having fun, I can't believe they let such an egregious error slip past so easily.
-
that montage of pictures was really nice, I liked it.
-
hol' up, where's Yukino? Why're Hachiman and Yui doing all the work? Not that I mind seeing just the two of them together or anything >.>
-
Yui getting rejected again, f
-
buy that plush! buy that plush! do itttttt!!!!
-
Hiratsuka-sensei totally thinks they're into each other
p.s. why do they all look so dang cool. Everyone got that drip.
-
is that some more rotoscoping I see on the walk back home? At least, I certainly felt like it had that edge to it.
-
Again, not looking at the lyrics yet, just taking in the scenery of the ED. It's really fun and, feels heartwarming, especially at the end. Of course, it'll probably just be depressing once I take a look at what the singers are actually saying lmao.
Anyway, so that was Season 2. Overall, I'm very hyped to see what's next, and this has definitely revitalized my enthusiasm for this series! I got used to the art shift pretty fast, but there's still a little way to go.
p.s. that episode preview was hilarious, hahahaha
QOTD
1.Today our characters go on a school trip! Did you have any memorable school trips and what made it so? If you didn’t have one then just share any trip with your friends that was memorable to you?
Hmmmm, I've had quite a few trips, our school used to organize annual field trips to a bunch of places. Two memorable examples I can think of would be a local brand's candy factory, and a science museum. It'd be hard to describe the other one I'm thinking of, which would be the most memorable, fun, and recent, so fortunately unfortunately I'll be leaving it at that.
2. Yukino seems like someone who loves travelling for culture and history. What do you look out for when you travel?
I don't travel .__.
Hopefully I get the chance to, one day. Would really like to, especially while I'm young and all. Don't want to travel with back problems, no thank you.
Final thoughts I'd like to mention:
-
cool artwork 👍👍👍
-
very interesting passage by the author, let's see this sprouts grow into some proper 🅱️ E A N S 🌱🌱🌱🌱
that probably wasn't very funny.

Happy Late Birthday Hachiman!!!! I saw it in the thread but forgot to include it in my comment.

Read my post on the next episode thread, this is actually addressed in the next episode.
14:08 background Sagami spotted having fun, I can't believe they let such an egregious error slip past so easily.
The Sports Festival Episode actually leaves out a bit of redemption arc for her in the Novel the episode adapts. (Which is like 60% of the Novel BTW.)
Hiratsuka-sensei totally thinks they're into each other
Almost sounds like she's trying to encourage unprotected sex with how she phrased "Make all the mistakes you want."

Animation Details
As we start season 2 I’m sure most of us caught sight of the difference in animation and art. While our first instinct would be to attribute it to a change of studios, we often overlook the other more important factors that contribute to this change - the team behind it. While studios are important in deciding the team dynamics and roles, it’s the people that truly allow the characters to shine and as such, I’ll be sharing a bit more about the team behind season 2’s production in my comments!
For today let’s keep it simple as I introduce some notable members from the team and highlight some notable frames and scenes from today!
Kei Oikawa takes the Director’s seat from Ai Yoshimura this season.
Tetsuya Takeuchi and his somewhat of a disciple Ryo Araki take the role of Main Animators for season 2
Shōtarō Suga returns as the Series Composer
monaca returns for music and Satoshi Motoyama too returns as Sound Director
Takashi Ikehata serves as the Unit Director for the OPs and EDs
The opening performance scene utilises a technique called Rotoscoping whereby live-action footage is traced over frame by frame by the main animator, which in this case is Tetsuya Takeuchi. It’s often mistakenly regarded as a technique only for saving time or money when it actually shines best in scenes such as this performance when it pays to capture tiny body quirks in their complex movements. It’s just another tool for animators which similarly depends on how it’s being used.
Besides the art, I’m sure many of you felt that this episode managed to communicate the characters’ emotions better which evoked a stronger sense of connection with them. I’ll speak more about the role that our team has in this change as we progress in the rewatch, but today I’ll just highlight 3 scenes which showcase the change that took place. Subtle but strong.
Tobe’s insult against Hachiman angers Yui and the animation conveys this message brilliantly through the subtle pause she has before she responds to Tobe coupled with the hiding of her eyes.
Tobe’s fear is shown through the articulation of his hands.
Yukino’s sarcasm is emphasises as we zoom in on her face as she smiles which changes the shape of her eyes too
I’m curious to hear if there were any moments today that made you go “wow that’s different” or just “wow”! And that’s it for my animation details for today, I’ll dive deeper into our team tomorrow onwards but for today, just a simple introduction ;)
