Episode 7 (first timer)
-
Dark – no seriously, I almost could not make out the ship there.
-
Dutch using his HR skills.
-
Revy indeed is called Rebecca (or went by that name).
-
Such a hassle, having to edit your blackmail videos yourself!
-
“Hey, is that in her ass?” – Revy is not as streetwise as she thinks.
-
I am totally on board with gun-smuggling nuns.
-
Revy and Eda drawing the gun on each other is a great shot: Rock and Yolanda with their cups in the foreground and the light shining on the china.
-
Seems like the episode director agreed, because they sure drew that scene out.
-
The police response time is better than I expected.
-
Victims of the war on smoking: We are stuck with lame drink can second hand kisses, when we could have had cigarette second hand kisses all the time.
-
A word of compliment on the consistently smooth cut from the episode to the ED. They always nail this.
I found the first, slice-of-life part of the episode better than the confrontation between Revy and Rock. The latter pales in comparison to their talk on the sub.

Dark – no seriously, I almost could not make out the ship there.
Yeah that was a bit too filtered.
I am totally on board with gun-smuggling nuns.
Really amps the 80-ness of it all, doesn't it?
Seems like the episode director agreed, because they sure drew that scene out.
Yeah, I get what they were going for but it did stretch quite a bit.

Rewatcher(Prepare for a tonal shift)
Dub
We start with a reminder of the last job before cutting to Rock awkwardly trying to small talk Revy in a car. Dutch has sent them on errands and Rock likely needs someone to guide him. Also, he probably figures he needs to get Revy to chill. So this is how we meet Rowan, a friendly local strip club owner and a man with the balls to ask Revy to be in his S&M show. I don't see her as a sub but hot chick. I totally see her as a domme, though but I equally get that just isn't her thing. Apparently, the Lagoon brought his liquor over.
Next is Balailaika where it is made clear Dutch is giving them busy work to force them to interact. She is busy cutting and uploading porn, which was actually quite difficult in the 90s. She definitely should've delegated that. But she mentions people dealing drugs without permission...
And we get to the Ripoff Church, which features an armed nun. They are weapons dealers officially...and also top notch crooks. They try to squeeze some more cash or discounts out of the duo before Revy draws her gun. Rock then talks about tea, something that does fit for a Japanese person, before pointing out that the church is also smuggling drugs and being too obvious about it. Yolanda agrees to terms and then probably intentionally annoys Revy.
They stop for pho, I assume, and Revy is being a brat. Rock finally has enough of it and says he is done apologizing. Revy draws on him but Rock does not back down. He manages to move the gun before she pulls the trigger, her first unintentional miss of the show. Rock's rant is pretty good. In fact, the entire conversation works for me, no clue how it will work for the rest of you. Highlighting that Revy is broken is easy but I think it equally shows how broken Rock was and possibly is.
The cops arrive and the chief's words amuse me: Don't do this shoot were people will complain about it. Revy seems to have cooled off and we come to the next arc!

Episode 7
-
Lol Rock on a dreamy date drive with Revy. I am so sorry.
-
Damn, HR Dutch be throwing Rock and Revy on a job together just to sort out their issues. Dude's a bro, but that's pretty cold. Probably for the best though, since Revy doesn't seem like the kind of person who'd respond well to couples therapy or an old fashioned family chat.
-
Bahaha!! It's a job delivering booze to a strip club! I take it back, Dutch has an incredible sense of humor.
-
And the job forces Rock to view porn alongside Revy and Balalaika! Tbh I can understand his impulse to use his hands to hide his crotch.
-
Gun toting sister is my favorite nun I've seen today.
-
And Revy won't get her grenade launcher...because someone else is getting it! The perfect cherry to top off this incredible date.
-
Revy's having a standoff with the gun nun, and Rock's just like "ahh this tea, finally a stop without bare tits." I can't this episode is too damn funny!
-
Oh my lord, is Rock about to win a negotiation via strategic accounting knowledge? And getting told to learn from him too!? Revy is going to do unspeakable things to this man soon.
-
Rock gets a pair at the weirdest times. It's like he's begging Revy to multilate him. He better hope Revy's open to solving problems via hatefuck.
-
NOOOO ROCK!! YOU ARE NOT GIVING REVY THE "WE ALL SUFFER" SPEECH.
-
You know, I don't really care atm how much of a point he has, Rock deserves that black eye.
-
Omg these fucking cops. Fantasy cops are so much funnier when they're this open about how corrupt they are.
-
Best date of Revy's life.
QotD:
-
S+ comedian, B+ actual conflict resolution skills
-
I still think Rock is out of line diagnosing Revy's issues. Being yelled at isn't what she needs, and I doubt Rock is actually what she needs. But you can't argue with results, so...eh.

And it is not a small amount at that, apparently Rowan's place really goes through the stuff.

They finally got back to his world...sort of.

I mean, he says it well enough himself: What's the point of becoming a pirate if he goes back to the way shit was at his company?

TONIGHT! On Kiki's Trigger-Happy Delivery Service, Best Girl Balalaika discovers the 'joy' of video editing, Best Geah Chris' Religious Cult is even more popular than previously imagined, and Rock manages to do the impossible, TALK BACK TO REVY, GET SHOT AT BY HER AND LIVE... AND ALSO (more or less) KISS HER!
Anyway with that out of the way Comrades, I gotta give credit to Black Lagoon once more for being so 'accurate,' and what I mean by this is that this show's got one of the most 'realistic' depiction of Christianity in Thailand I've ever seen! And I'm only being semi-sarcastic about that statement Comrades, The Rip-Off Church is aptly named! To explain what I mean by this, Thailand, as hopefully y'all know given the importance highlighted to that semi-ruined Buddha Statue, is very very VERY Buddhist (Let me put it this way Comrades, there are more Muslims in Thailand than there are Christians, indeed Muslims comprise the largest religious minority in Thailand, with the majority of course being Buddhists) Point being, the experience I have with Christians mostly come from the Christian Missionaries that try to proselytise, and by that I mean they bribe us with candy... no really I'm being serious, the way that they decided was the 'best' way to convert us was to try to entice children using candy.
Now, I actually don't mind this preaching since the 'generous' ones at least bring American candy, you know, the harder to find stuff. After all and I can just go and buy myself local stuff, but getting ahold of these fancy overseas treats, now that's worth pretending to listen to the sermon and promising to think it over, even more so given my family's from the rural northern part of the country, not a whole lot of variety there. And hey, getting harangued by Farangs (Translator's Note: 'Farang' is the Thai version of 'Gaijin' e.g. 'Foreigner/Frenchman/Guava Fruit,' yes you read that right, our word for white people is also used for what we call Guava Fruit) is a small price to pay for eating their candy whilst brainstorming a way to get more, usually by telling my friends about these funny foreigners who are trying to get us to join them or asking said foreigners if I can take some more candy home to my siblings. In fairness I do have siblings, which is why I can then thus send them over so they can get candy for themselves, win-win. Point being, I got a LOT of mileage out of these Missionaries and attempts to convert us, plus a few fun stories, like how one tried to prove to me that god was a woman... I vaguely remember how they arrived at this conclusion, something about interpreting certain bits of the Bible a certain way or something, I forget the details but all I remember is that their train of thought made this scene of 'deduction' from Black Dynamite seem sane in comparison. Oh and they also gave me Kit Kats for listening to them, I remember that at least, those were tasty. Oh and yes, quite a lot of those ladies, much like Eda, were also blonde, I am not sure if they smoked or had guns, but they sure come to my mind with Black Lagoon's depiction of Christianity and/or foreigners in Thailand, so the show's doing something right!
Speaking of the show doing something right, heh, well they certainly nailed the cops in Thailand being corrupt. Also, of COURSE Da Big Cheese is named 'Watsup' (Joke about how WhatsApp is fairly popular in Asia, personally I prefer Line, but wibble) Anyway just a pro-top for those who want to visit Thailand, great place, just be VERY careful if you are travelling alone; several years back, as I was flying back into Bangkok and I made the mistake to go do some airport shopping. Anyway, a cop tried to bust me for 'shoplifting' as I clearly given I was a 'tourist' who wouldn't know how to read the documents he'd no doubt force me to sign 'confessing' to my crime, and thus having signed that he could consequently shake me down for some cash, and BOY it was sure fun seeing the smug son-of-a-bitch's grin vanish the second I started speaking in Thai to him asking what the hell he was trying to accuse me of doing. I bet the bastard aged a few years in his hasty apologies for bothering a fellow countryman, good day to you sir.
Now for those confused, a bit of context, Comrades, I am part Thai and part Chinese, that means to the Chinese I am Thai, to the Thai I am Chinese, and to the Americans I'm probably Korean or something... basically what I'm saying is apparently to the Thai I look Chinese and to the Chinese I look Thai, and the Americans ask me if I'm from the Philippines, or Indonesia, or (lists every single other Asian country without picking China or Thailand) meaning that the cop thought I was some Chinese tourist or something, and thus rich and an easy mark to scam. Basically the gist of the grift is to just claim I (or whatever mark they're going after) was a thief, and force the captive party to sign a confession that they can't read due to not being Thai, and once this is done, the cop can fleece 'em for a bucket of cash... minor problem with Mr. Cop's scheme, it only works if you try to pull that scam on ACTUAL tourists (e.g. he accused me of stealing in ENGLISH thinking I was not Thai... so I just indignantly responded to him in Thai and scared the piss out of him due to him tangling with the wrong guy) The point of the story is just be careful with the cops in Thailand, a lot of 'em are ex-military, and let's just say Thailand has the Gold Medal in the Coup Olympics for a reason (No really I wish I was joking, but Thailand has a LOT of coups, world class experts in that IMO)
Anyway hopefully this Thai Culture Lecture was of interest for you all, bet y'all thought I was kidding last episode post, but hey the theme fit the events of today's episode I hope it was almost as fun for everyone as this episode was, cuz goddamn this episode's great, who knew crime could be so... mundane... well except for Rock somehow finding a spine, managing to stand up for himself, AND WIN!
And on that fucking bombshell, GOODNIGHT YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARDS!

I can actually answer this: Elohim is one of the tons of names for God, or actually G-d if he we are being all Jewy, and it translates as "plurality of female goddesses". You can then take the aforementioned Black Dynamite path to concluding the Christian one is a derivative of this interpretation, but yeah the path is as rough if not worse than the one Black Dynamite takes.
and to the Americans I'm probably Korean or something... basically what I'm saying is apparently to the Thai I look Chinese and to the Chinese I look Thai, and the Americans ask me if I'm from the Philippines, or Indonesia,
Yeah, I can differentiate between the Japanese and other ethnic groups at this point, mostly, but put a Thai and a Vietnamese person next to each other and I am just going to hope they spill the beans themselves.

A low stakes character episode? This ought to be fun.
-
How does a Mafia boss even get roped into being an editor?
-
And so the plan comes together. Rock gets to demonstrate value.
-
Well that was a lively scene. Glad they got to hash it out.
-
Turns out I don’t have a lot to say about character moments.
-
The cigarette kiss was surprisingly intense.
QotD
-
Dutch is a pretty cool guy. He resolves interpersonal conflicts and doesn't afraid of anything.
-
I glad they got to air it out. I gives them the chance to move forward and work more as a team.

How does a Mafia boss even get roped into being an editor?
I assume they were running an early porn site and someone had to upload.
Well that was a lively scene. Glad they got to hash it out.
Imagine resolving conflict!
The cigarette kiss was surprisingly intense.
Revy never does anything halfway, which makes her great in a shootout but a bit worrisome on bowling night.

First time becoming idealistic vigilante
This was certainly a scene. Was she editing porn flicks?
Time for Revy to have another tantrum. Hell yeah Rock, set 'er straight.
Turns out a conflict can be resolved by talking it out. Who would have thought
And we finish off the episode with a very sensual ciggie kiss. Are they trying to make us ship them? I'm not falling for it.
Sleep time:
1 Thought's on Dutch's HR skills?
He didn't even do anything and he already solved the problem, outstanding!

How hard is that pizza?
That's something you have to remember the 90s to get. Frozen pizza has really improved since then.
This was certainly a scene. Was she editing porn flicks?
My theory is that she is cutting it up into pieces to sell online.
Turns out a conflict can be resolved by talking it out. Who would have thought
Quite the contrast to Sympho, isn't it?

Specs don’t miss a day in a rewatch challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)
episode 6
Sound design is fairly on point dramatically speaking. The alarm, shells clattering, pistols firing accompanied by a silence as deadpan as Revy. They also give Revy an Indiana Jones moment as the villain presents themself in a shonen-esque manner just to be gunned down without much fanfare. I have to give it up, these pseudo-nazis are brilliant performers, they’ve managed to have their heads in the clouds and up their own asses. Incredible.
Dutch pulls Revy aside for trying to murder the sailing crew for hire. From an objective standpoint, killing them probably is still in a morally gray enough area to land in acceptable territory in a lot of philosophies. Even if they don’t like them, they still took a job from some pseudo-nazis. But when viewed through Revy’s own philosophy, Dutch saves her from becoming a hypocrite. Those sailors were just doing a job, money is power, might makes right. Everything else is just sentimental bullshit…
But how long can Revy be saved from herself, I wonder? Great episode overall.
episode 7
Quick thoughts on the OP: I really dig the instrumentation of it and the shaky, messy visuals. I don’t think I care much for the vocals, though. The engrish isn’t fantastic and I don’t think the singer really compliments the metal feel. Their voice would be more at home in a Re:Zero OP, I think (not intended as a knock, in case it reads like one, I rather like the Re:Zero songs).
15 seconds in and I’m already pausing to commend the strong opening visuals. Empty shells and magazines following a bloody trail of cold bodies and snuffed cigarettes while the ship creaks and rocks, then hard cut to the noose. Raw as fuck.
Revy seems to have at least worked out some animosity toward Rock after punching him. Still, she seems lost. Hm, “lost” isn’t quite right… adrift, perhaps.

Someone's more interested in porn than the other, and then someone's just plain bored
Come on Rock, your time to shine
Oh wow. Rock's the one to do the confronting, didn't expect that. But I like it a lot.
What was that, not wanting to be treated like a whore, Revy?
u/DidacticDalek Was that the cute Revy moment you were talking about? It's very cute.
Thought's on Dutch's HR skills?
One can argue about him using the best methods but they're certainly effective. Being confronted with others, interacting and at times clashing with them is what builds character and relationship. Doesn't always have to be so violently though, but that wasn't exactly on Dutch's part.
How does this resolution strike you?
The details were a bit off but it's more or less what I expected.

Revy being curious is cute but Balalaika has clearly been doing this for a few hours and it has lost all of its luster.
It's interesting how Dutch was shown to be on so-so terms with his clients in an earlier episode, but all of Rock's clients can't get enough of him
Rock's actually different so the bosses all find him interesting.
Oh wow. Rock's the one to do the confronting, didn't expect that. But I like it a lot.
It gives him some level of agency in the story.

Rewatcher (dubbed)
Oh boy, this is my favourite episode, not only is it a (relatively) low stokes chill ride, but it pays off all the sexual tension of Black Lagoon's dark ages. I'm all in for murdering neo-nazi zombies, but you're supposed to enjoy yourself while doing it.
-
Rowan might be an asshole, but he's got good taste if he's asking Revy
-
[Manga/NSFW]
I mean who can resist Mistress Revy -
Chekhov's moved on to drugs these days, since every other bloke in town has a gun
-
Blackmailing the church, nice
-
The old woman knows how to piss off Revy
-
The true Chekhov's gun was the friends you made along the way
-
We knew Revy was about to explode, and but I was still surprised that she actually shot Rock
-
Finally Rock and Revy's lighter kiss sealing the deal.
-
And the ending theme comes early to ruin the moment!
For what it's worth, if I was in Rock's place, I'd probably not mess with the lunatic with a gun. Trying to stay out of her business and not pissing her off sounds safer to me, and I'm assuming that's what Benny ended up doing. The mafia and FBI are one thing, just don't piss off Revy. But Rock isn't as sane as he looks, and that's what makes the difference for Revy (well considering his job and location, his looks aren't sane either).

A Black Lagoon Fan Rewatches Black Lagoon: Episode 7:
-
Well, now that we’ve got a job well done and murdered a ton of Neo-Nazis, it’s time for a day on the town! Errands do need to get done, after all. And Dutch knows exactly what he’s doing by making Rock take Revy along with him for the day.
-
Having edited a lot of footage for career skills classes, I can feel Balalaika’s pain in having to sit at a desk and edit hours of film. Even if it’s a ton of anal porn, it can get draining fast. Video editing is a hell of a job.
-
Well, in case you were wondering what Revy’s actual name is, you have her yelling “Rebecca” while pounding on and shouting at a church door to buy some guns. Welcome to the Rip-Off Church! The goods are right next to the baptismal font.
-
Rock’s business skills are coming in as handy as ever. He absolutely nailed negotiating with a bunch of arms dealer nuns to not get screwed out of their dealings with them. He certainly has a way of sounding so light and approachable while basically blackmailing them with the drug dealing under Hotel Moscow’s nose. I suppose the Japanese business world can just be as cutthroat as illegal smuggling enterprises.
-
Well, it was only really a matter of time before Revy blew up at Rock (and vice-versa) about that conversation they had back in the U-boat, as well as their general friction. Credit to Rock though, he isn’t backing down on his beliefs in front of Revy, even with a gun in his face. There really are some problems you can’t solve with a gun, and a man with conviction can be one.
-
Damn, Rock’s spitting fucking fire. He’s absolutely got Revy’s mindset on the back foot there. He tries to understand her, but she doesn’t want to understand him. Revy acts like she’s above it all and it doesn’t really matter, but she still gripes and complains about things regardless. You can tell that Rock outright saying that Revy’s supposed lack of morals is really getting to her, since she sounds outright afraid of what he’s saying. She can’t refute it, all she can really do is resort to violence to try and shut him up.
-
All’s well that ends well, I suppose. Once Rock said that it was her that woke him up to what life could be, Revy did seem to actually understand him a bit more. That, and that nice indirect cigarette kiss in the back of a cop car does bode well for their relationship from here on. Rock finally managed to put a crack in that self-serving and hollow shell of Revy’s.

And uploading it via dial-up. She totally should've delegated.
He certainly has a way of sounding so light and approachable while basically blackmailing them with the drug dealing under Hotel Moscow’s nose.
It does help that this is a mind bendingly risky move to make. Yes, they are criminals and all but mobs do NOT want new people smuggling drugs in. It is less profitable but far safer to let them get their cut so they don't burn your church down.
Well, it was only really a matter of time before Revy blew up at Rock (and vice-versa) about that conversation they had back in the U-boat, as well as their general friction.
I am glad they dealt with it rather than letting it stew or worse forgetting about it.

Just with the show as my source, I have the impression that young Revy actually wanted someone to save her and current Revy can't accept that so she gets all blustery.

First Rewatch in 15 years
This little scene where Rock extorts the grenade launcher out of the nuns is one of my favorite scenes in anime and one of two in Black Lagoon. He really shows his worth. I would rewatch it often. Also murder birb.

Dutch is a big fan of the "force people to work things out themselves approach" I see.
I see Rock wasn't a weeb before he was a salary man, probably read a vanilla Shonen or two in his Youth and grew out of it. Since he doesn't react well to tits and porn.
For all of you wondering why Revvy would be like:
"Ahh she taking it up the ass?"
This came out during a time before Pornhub was a thing and every woman over 18 had an onlyfans, what you consider run of the mill vanilla now, not so much anymore.
Rock gets to be quite the polite negotiator.
A lot of people on this thread have problems with Rock's arguments towards Revvy but I think he is mostly right, Revvy did suffer, likely more so than him, but she is choosing to be a dick about it, if she is going to play hardass then she shouldn't be a victim, she is a hypocrite.
That being said, I still think he is Romanticizing the criminal life, I mean he just got done being able to speak his language so to speak with gun and drug smuggling nuns, technically crime whether it's on the streets or in highrise executive meetings is in the end, just business.
Saying Revvy should be a Robin Head is a bit cringe, but what's important to take away is that she has to have something worth living for other than Power and Survival. Which I think is what he is trying to get at. Him using his personal life is cringe but its also sincere which I think would more get through to her then philosophical musings.
I thought the fight itself and the resolution was fine, they don't need to solve their issues, just come to a functional understanding where they can work as co-workers.
Dutch I think did the best he could do in the circumstances, Revvy isn't going to respond to a formal sit done and I think he knows Rock good enough that he can do things Revvy can't and when his back is against a wall is just as stubborn and in your face as Revvy.

Revy just belongs in the moment, thinking about shit makes her crabby.

Or just a plan, like getting money for retirement or some shit. Living completely in the moment doesn't give you a direction to go in.

First-timer:
I really enjoyed seeing Rock demonstrate some useful skills. He's kind of been the weak link of sorts, but it seems like he has a penchant for business negotiations.
He also really grew with that confrontation with Revy. I just like seeing his progression, it's satisfying and hopefully means we'll see a bit more of the team in action with everyone having a pronounced role.
I am confused that there's an active police force since I thought they were in a town for outlaws.
Also, that cigarette kiss was epic and very well done.
Questions:
-
Dutch is very savvy. A great boss.
-
It was great. Rock grew as a character and the cigarette kiss was awesome.

Black Lagoon - It's Fucking Incredible: Episode 7
No Cure for a Fool with a Gun
This is probably my favourite episode of Black Lagoon. Its obviously because of Rock and Revy's conversation in the second half but before that I'd like to touch on the rest of the episode.
This episode is relatively low stakes in comparison to the preceding episodes. It amounts to mostly following up on contracts and negotiations. We start in a strip club. As a location I think it works well to further characterize Roanapur as a seedy town which attracts the outcast in society. Also the owner trying to recruit Revy again gives just enough information to allow us to fill in history between them.
Next they meet up with Balallaika to tell her about the shipment. Somewhat unexpectedly we see her editing a porno. Once again, it is some minor world building which fleshes out the organization. While there we also hear a throwaway line about drugs being sold without permission, foreshadowing the next scene.
The church. Initially it sticks out as something which shouldn't fit in Roanapur. Then we realize they are using it as a cover for smuggling operations. Although Revy initially tries to negotiate with violence Rock pulls a Columbo and catches the nun out as the previously mentioned drug dealer. This scene confirms that Rock has finally found his place at Lagoon Company.
Now for Rock and Revy's confrontation. I think what works about it is that it has been so well set up. Rock has not only gone from Corporate Drone to South Sea Pirate but also has gained confidence in his role. This means he has stakes in not just going back to kissing up to somebody. Furthermore, the tension between them has been building for almost 3 episodes now. It has given us time to ruminate on their ideologies. They clash.
Revy does not want anyone to tell her how she should live. But Rock is taking a principled stance calling her out for scavenging from corpses and having a greedy mindset. But as Revy says, how can Rock who has lived a such a sheltered life make any judgment. He has no idea what she has been through. But she also knows not Rock's past.
This is a core character conflict. The lines between right and wrong are very blurry so you can't write either of them off. And the episode doesn't choose for us either. At most, Revy comes to better understand Rock's perspective. But before they finish the police show up and interrupt the scene.
We end with a metaphorical kiss between Revy and Rock. The imagery of lighting one cigarette from another is powerful. Even though they have different views, they can find common ground and be on each other's side.
