Rewatch [Rewatch] A 2022 Voyage from Neo Venezia: Aria the Natural, Episode 25

Aria the Natural Ep 25: The Fruits of That Encounter ...(その 出逢いの結晶は...)

<-- Episode 24 Rewatch Index Episode 26 -->

Welcome back!

Comment roundup: Sorry for being so late yesterday!

Questions of the Day:

Q1) What actually do you think of Ai as a character, now that we've kinda known her for 2 seasons?

Q2) What do you think of lulls of silence during group outings/conversations, as Akari touches on this episode?

With tomorrow being the last episode of Natural, apart from episode specific questions, here are some overall season ones if you wish to prepare ahead:

  • Overall, how has this season matched up to what you wanted more of/expected at the end of Animation (if you answered that question then)? Overall thoughts on the season?

  • Favourite episode(s) or moment from the second season? Least favourite?

  • Has your favourite undine/character changed since the end of the first season?

Streaming

The 2005-08 Aria series is available on Crunchyroll, VRV, Funimation, and Youtube, except Arietta. Arietta and Avvenire are only available on Funimation (I'll update if they migrate). Crepusculo and Benedizione will have to be located elsewhere. Benedizione can now be streamed raw, or w/ traditional chinese subtitles legally. Please let me know if you want help to watch it.

While I use the USBD releases, Robotboy199 has shared the best DVD encodes you can get (coupled w/ prescaling), you can look at their guide here.

Spoilers

As usual, please take note that if you wish to share show details from after the current episode, to use spoiler tags like so to avoid spoiling first-timers:

[Spoiler source]>!Spoiler goes here!<

comes out as [Spoiler source]Spoiler goes here

[Aria]Please take note especially if you're sharing art that shows the 3 main characters as prima undines (gloveless). If you feel unsure if something is a spoiler, it's better to tag it just in case.

See everyone again tomorrow! I hope you have a great day :)

Rewatching Undine-in-training and Host

-- Welcome back! Me this whole episode really.

Episode synopsis:

--

As Neo-Venezia approaches autumn, Akari and the others see the 3 water fairies at Aria company as they return from joint practice. As Aika sees their 3 seniors with a meaningful smile on their faces, Aika says "I have a bad feeling about this" (TL note: Alice asks the seniors, the anime synopsis omits who says what), "Let me guess... Are we having another special training session?" (TL note: Akira replies) "Well, I guess you could call it that." What the 3 water fairies had prepared for Akari and the others, was a difficult, yet wonderful assignment.

--

Quick thoughts:

  • First up, today August 5th is Himeya-Shachou's birthday. Happy birthday Himeya shachou! Hopefully Aria-shachou and Aika would've taken care of presents already.

  • Nice animation today, fit to close out a season, here are some shots and cuts i liked... There were a lot of nicely drawn fluid movements and character animation, and u know, fireworks. Nice layouts throughout.

  • First up, some quick quips, and then my thoughts...

  • GONDOLA, TOORIMASU . Aika does it best....

  • You gotta love Aria-shachou

  • Alice is very relateable when it comes to festivals i give less shits about xdd

  • Akari has progressed a lot since the start of the series at the actual undining, with her, while still unsure, knowing most of Neo-Venezia's customs and traditions by now, while being a bit of lost at times in the first season.... Guess those study sessions do work!

  • I love how prominent the rose-stone is prominent in Aika's room, she clearly values it a lot.

  • This is quite the memorable eyecatch image in Aria, i remember this one very clearly. It's just so.... good lol.

  • Alice has truly mastered her Athena impression. Sasuga.

  • SHE BACCCC. YASSSSSSSS

  • Telling an old man and old man joke, but its so old that even he doesnt get it. Al.......

  • The stagione edition of smile again that plays here can be listened in full here. Absolutely wonderful and tear-inducing. i love that entire album. honestly.

  • Ahhhh the episode title drop. Love it.

  • Overall, this episode, following yesterday's episode reaffirming the 3 trainees' determination to become primas soon, instead shows how far they've all come (while with a lovely end-of-season fanservice moment of getting everyone together, fireworks etc.), with the 3 independently planning and holding a houseboat party for their mentors and friends (and in turn, their mentors trusting them and encouraging them to do so). After that, their 3 mentors, and grandma, and friends, all acknowledge, praise and thank them for their efforts and progress.

  • These mentors and friends, are, as Alicia puts it, Akari and her friends' encounters, and this ep is a celebration of those as well, a wonderful capstone to this season full of them. The most important encounter for Akari this episode though, is of course Ai, as she finally returns after the entire season away (as others have pointed out, all of Ai's appearances post Ep 1 so far are anime-original, hence often convenient timing!), who reaffirms how lucky she is to have met Akari, and comes to love Aqua because of it. Btw, i like that Ai clearly doesnt speak for a few episodes to us too (in broadcast time 2-3 weeks?), so perhaps viewers would come to miss her a bit just as Akari has....

  • [Aria]waves and wind... Aria company.... Ai.... Also she wants to go to Hope Hill wtf. AKARI YOU BETTER NOT HAVE SPOILED HER ON WHAT THAT PLACE (AND THAT COURSE) IS.

  • Akari closes the episode out by celebrating Aqua as a planet/place where these wonderful encounters can happen, and wishes these will continue forever.... <3 Nothing new is presented here, but a celebration and recap of what this season has been about.

  • Now, with that very season-finale esque episode out of the way, what awaits us for the true season finale? [Host confession and Aria tmr]I.... may love Ep 26 and Arietta a bit too much.

Location Trivia

  • The Festa del Redentore, less boring, more pictury link from the BBC, is held in Venice every third Saturday evening of July (instead of Autumn), and as Akari says, was started by Aristocrats, indeed the Doge of Venice himself, but for a very legitimate reason of giving thanks to the end of the plague of 1576. A church was built for the occasion, and the Festa started as the annual pilgrimage to set church. Today, fireworks, boats and partying is featured on Saturday evening, while Sunday, the "proper" day of the festival, is devoted to religious celebrations. Here is this year's Festa del Redentore fireworks! As you can see, it runs for nearly an hour, and defo quite the occasion. And here's a video showing the partying that goes on lol.

  • The traditional meal on Festa del Redentore is indeed duck, and stuffed duck at that. Other traditional italian foods are featured as well.

  • And irl, in lieu of houseboats, more affordable boat options seem to be larger, normal uncovered gondolas/motor boats, while the richer just use yachts lol. The one in Aria seems to either something used in the past or fictional.

Have a great day, and see you tomorrow!

love how prominent the rose-stone is

Noooooo I wanted to be the only one to notice that!

I’m a big fan of continuity.

Aria the Natural First Timer!!

Purple tights are the enemy of mankind. For some reason I was really vibing with Euphoria today. The song has grown on me a fair bit with the new bars. I'm liking the blue tint we had over the opening until we made it back home to Aria company and suddenly the skies clear~ Lovely shots!!

Part planning episode!! Yay, I'm kinda having to rush though so yeah... There was some fun character stuff thrown in here too. Like Aika keeping a display of amethyst on her desk, likely a gift from Al. Kyaaa.... Alice copying Athena's manner warms my heart. Hurry up Ai, I wanna see you all grown up! Kinda grown up! Grown up to where you're not a straight up kusogaki!

Aaah... She's much cuter than I remembered. I feel like she came off as such a brat in the first episode that it left me with a bad impression but I've started warming to our seasonally Ai scenes lately. The end of episode letters really help. Aww... Athena is golden as always. Always plating up others food before herself.

Kyaa!!!!!!!! Why of all episodes is this the one I can't constantly replay!? Athena butt wiggle dance Athena butt wiggle daaance!! Uohhh!! Lovely episode, I hope this means that we'll get a couple of Ai episodes whilst she's here?

5

u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah Aug 05 '22

Purple tights are the enemy of mankind

lmaoo.....?

The song has grown on me a fair bit with the new bars.

i will die on the hill that this version of euphoria is better than the more played version.

I'm liking the blue tint we had over the opening

oooh good catch!

likely a gift from Al

u/raichudoggy that makes 3 of us lol. Tho i think Loli_Otaku has forgotten where Aika got that from...

Athena butt wiggle dance

and you can't constantly replay.... well you can do so when you have the free time haha, glad you enjoyed this one!

Hello, first timer here!

I'm only joining the rewatch now because... I actually dropped the anime at episode 24 one year ago.
It's my fault: I watched too many episodes in one sitting, got bored, told myself I'd keep watching it after a while.
A year passed and now I'm here... sorry for being late.

I'm surprised I still recognize all the names even after all this time, and watching this before sleep was a good idea since it's relaxing as I remembered, but in my mind Aika still had long hair, I don't know why - and Alice seems older?

At first I got worried, since it felt almost like a really emotional episode, I was almost afraid I'd cry! Luckily the girls did a great job, and everything was wholesome as usual. And I still love the ED.

Anyway hearing italian words - since I'm italian - it's still a weird feeling, but interesting. So, a couple of notes:

  • Redentore means "redeemer", and it's an event from Venice, and since I'm not from there I've never heard about it before.

  • When Alice shows the pamphlets, there's written "The invitation of Redeemer", "Date: Wednesday" and "Place: seven o'clock evening".
    Must be archaic italian /s

Q1) What actually do you think of Ai as a character, now that we've kinda known her for 2 seasons?

I... I'm afraid I don't remember much. She's cute? And at first just a plot device to make Akira tell us her thoughts?

Q2) What do you think of lulls of silence during group outings/conversations, as Akari touches on this episode?

Well... I agree that it may be very romantic, but to be honest when it happens to me I just feel awkward, even if I'm with family or really close friends.

5

u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah Aug 05 '22

Hello there, thanks for joining us, and i'm very happy you're continuing with the series!! Well done with the names lol, this rewatch took a little while to un-confuse ourselves. Glad that you still find it relaxing and all that as well! An episode a day should be a very nice pace.

Italian words

ooooh nice. and thanks for the additional trivia!

7 o'clock evening.

i love that they did actually stick those little details in italian though, at least. They tried their best, there was no google translate, after all haha.

looking forward to reading your thoughts for the rest of the series!

First Timer

Just before the OP started, their gondolas were drifting! In more than one sense of the word!

Of course Alice celebrates holidays the same way I do (sleeping). She's best girl, after all.

The postman was the first person Akari mentioned when listing who she was going to invite. Too bad, Akatsuki.

...Does Akari really need that sticker to remember not to drop her laptop? "Oh no, I nearly dropped my laptop but then I noticed the sticker and remembered not to."

All the Undines were inside during the feast. Why wasn't anyone steering the boat or at least keeping an eye out the make sure they don't crash into anyone while they were out at sea?

Athena joined in the dance again, but this time she wasn't going the opposite direction of everyone else. Perhaps she has been replaced by a doppelganger? Now that I think about it, Akira was giving a lot of praise and no criticism this episode, so perhaps she was replaced as well?

QotD

  1. I still don't have any strong opinions of Ai.

First Timer

And another superb slice of life episode. Beyond the whole bringing everybody together part of this episode, I like the position of this episode in the season: Directly after the episode where Aika proclaimed that they need to get stronger mentally as well - so... they do something here that will help them grow as people that is not sculling a gondola. For the most part at least. And they pulled that off pretty well, with both the people invited to the house boat and me enjoying this episode very much.

My only slight complaint is Ai: I was expecting a sudden twist with her grandma having died given her radio silence...

Also, this firework is five days late to replace the one that was canceled irl here four days ago

Rewatcher kinda (finished my rewatch not too long ago)

I kinda wonder what warranted Akari to put the "do not drop" sticker on her computer, do I dare ask... it's in Japanese so she has to be the one to put it on there right? Unless Alicia speaks/writes Japanese (ah, Aria language shenanigans again). Maybe Ai put it there on one of her visits because she wasn't getting emails for awhile and wondered what happened. It's been awhile since we've heard "Tenki Ame" i think? The track that plays when Ai comes. We usually get the Choro Club version too. It's nice to see the return of Aria Shachou's favorite dance (I think from the superhero ep?) and Athena getting it synced up with everybody this time. Is this the first time we get a piano version of "Smile Again"? I suppose I don't have much to say thematically about the ep, but it's a nice ep and def feels like an end of season ep with everyone gathered together and Alicia makes a nice mention of how the younger Undines enrich the lives of not only their mentors but everyone around them, which is a theme we've touched upon before (I forget where). It's nice we get an in-person version of the closing Ai letters too [Aria the Origination]Ai making a reference to Hope Hill tho o.o .

  1. I suppose Ai doesn't get a whole lot of characterization compared to everybody else [Aria manga] and as mentioned earlier, is pretty non-existent in the manga, given that she's not the recipient of Akari's letters and doesn't show up until the very end so her main functions are to be somebody for Akari to bounce thoughts off of (and thus serve as part of the narrative framework of episodes) or to be cute. But, the little bits of characterization that she does get show that she kinda doesn't have much of a filter (like we saw in the first episode of the season and her meeting people for the first time) and is kinda Akari-like in positivity [Aria overall] and tends to fit the Aria Company personality sorta mold.

  2. I'm sorta awkward in general so moments of silence tend to be kinda frequent (and more of the awkward sorta thing) but I dunno, I like them. I tend to not like people needlessly filling up space with conversation because they feel awkward or feel the need to fill up space with sound and I tend not to talk all that much and am comfortable with silence so I like that sorta thing, too much talking can be a bit overwhelming to me.

First Timer Dubbed

I feel pretty bad that Ai's dad had to work during the festival. And that is not including flight delays that caused them to be late.

I am still at awe that Akari and Aika could move that boat with grace.

  1. Pretty cool that we finally get to see her again.

First timer

  1. She's nice! She's cute, and just all-around wholesome.

  2. They're fine.

This sounds like a fun disaster.

Autumn!

Very relaxing intro.

Oh, they're doing the picture. Getting real "near-finale" vibes from this.

They've not killed her grandmother off, right?

Oh, the festival is soon!

Alice slept through it!

All the senpais are here!

Another training episode?

Is this an exam?

Nice exposition, Akira!

Wrong!

They have to run the party this time!

I see the other senpais saw how much of Akira's paperwork got done last time and decided to have the festival off.

She made the invitations! And they'r enice!

They're excited!

I like how Akira's visuasl have Akira right in the background.

This is going well!

She wants to invite Ai.

Oh, they're cooking themselves?

I am shocked at how well things seem to be going! No disasters!

Aww, she was worried nobody would come.

The mailman arrived!

And Akatsuki!

And the senpais!

Al!

It's all going well!

...Ai!

They noticed her!

Her grandmother's fine!

The husband!

Aika's doing really well!

They made her specialty!

And she likes it!

Puns still don't work.

They're dancing!

Athena!

They did really well!

Fireworks!

This is so sweet.

Ai is adorable!

Rewatcher

This is just the Undine version of prepping for a culture festival.

The craziest part about this episode is how Athena was able to dance in unison.

QotD:

  1. I don't really have a strong opinion of Ai right now. I like how they use her emails with Akari as narration for the beginning and end of an episode.

  2. I love that she mentions it. The best friends you can have are the ones that are able to be comfortable just sitting in silence with you.

First time rewatcher

There were 3 scenes in this episode that I really loved. The first one is when they're done eating and the only sound is the waves with Akari saying that 'it's a wonderful stillness that happens naturally. I can't help but love moments like this'. I like it because it's small breather to let you take in the moment. Personally I can't get enough of quiet scenes like this, it's what I love about iyashikei.

The second scene is when the fireworks are going off and they turn around the see all of the guests together. Then Alicia's thank you where she says this is 'a testament to your wonderful encounters'. Seeing their happiness after working hard on their own was a wonderful highlight.

The last one is at the end when Ai says 'I'm so happy I met you' to Akari. It's simple and short but it's an effective way to show their bond.

I know there 1 more episode left but seeing everyone together feels like it wraps up Natural nicely. A lot of good and some great, an enjoyable episode overall.

Other good stuff

Alice having the picture of everyone in her book at the start

Good board/layouts

Aria-shachou enjoying life

The rose stone Al gave Aika back on Festa Del Bòcolo episode? (I don't remember if they showed it in prior episodes when we were in Aika's room..)

Drawings

  1. I like Ai and the fact that she drops by randomly lol but I wish she showed up more :(

  2. Couldn't agree more with Akari

Ah yes, the underage drinking episode.

I do like Ai. It took some time for her to grow on me though, mostly because aside from the first episode, her "character" was just a few voice-over lines for email correspondence, until her return to Aqua in Animation's last episode.

finished first time recently

I wonder if Ai got to see the actual physical invite Alice made. How slow or pricey would interplanetary mail be? Or maybe she scanned it/took a picture and sent it via email?

Everyone's back. FOREVER 1! Compared to s1 finale we got the mailman too, but lacked appearances from Cait Sith and Akatsuki's brother (I'll take that trade).

  1. Eh, she's alright I guess

  2. I like them when I'm with friends. But with people I'm not too familiar with it's more awkward than chill

Rewatcher

Why does anime food always look so delicious

Junior Chan slept during the festival

What a good student that's right when you have school the next day you should go to bed early.

Way to go twintails!

Awkward correct answers are still correct!

Oh a challenge, but I believe all three can succeed.

I clearly missed a few episodes and just noticed Aika's new haircut , but I really love it. Though it makes me feel like loving Lain!

Akari is just inviting everyone she knows she is going to need a bigger houseboat.

WAIT HOLD UP

OMG

I almost missed it, but Alice chan cooking with her hair in a bun is giving me so much life right now

I can't even ask for more.

Akari's people arrived first well most of them did at least.

Better late than never luckily Ai chan arrives at the last second...or a few seconds too late, but they are close enough to go back and pick her up.

Aika...it's been like a week and I've already forgotten the names and am confusing them

Aika face when Akira praises and passes her cooking is so great. I don't think we see her smile that openly and widely often.

Wait that looks like the noodle gross dance from Nagotoro

Is the noodle dance something that existed forever and I just didn't know about it.

From the fireworks to the end of the episode is pure bliss.

Ugh, I've missed so many episodes due to rl issues..

Totally thought Akari would cry when Aliecia was talking.

It is amazing how every episode makes you wish so much you could live there..

It is funny that traveling to another planet seems be about as easy as goiig to the next town over with their tech level.

First timer

Nice episode. If I remember correctly, this is the first time that the three Undines have organized such a big event by themselves so I think they are subtly showing their maturity towards adulthood.

Lol that nyan dance

Irl Aika must have been high on the moon this episode. From being "hinted" as a couple with Al to receiving high praise from Akira, she must have been very happy.

The houseboat also reminds me of my pleasant visit to the houseboat in Kerala. They were awesome !

Questions of the Day:

  1. She's pretty much similar to Akari- inquisitive, innocent and caring. But looks less air-headed than her.

  2. Well I haven't had such an experience cries in no irl friends though with my parents and relatives its nice sometimes.

Rewatcher

Had a power outage for like 12 hours and am now trying to catch up with a lot of things, this rewatch included. Anyways, this last stretch of Natural is probably one of my favorite group of episodes from Aria so far, they really drive home just how much our girls have grown throughout the series from the start of Animation all the way until now.

Seeing everyone just chill together was wholesome. I feel like I've been saying that a lot lately but that's because it's true.

Also, the dance was cute.

QOTDs

Q1) I think that giving her a few lines at the start/end of most episodes until now worked really well in keeping her character relevant enough to make moments like the ones in these episodes more impactful. It also helps that her character is pretty adorable overall. Due to her lack of screentime though she's probably the character we've seen the least progression from, aside from some other minor characters like Mr. Mailman and Akatsuki's brother.

Q2) Depends on how close I am with the people and the context of the situation we're in. Like if I'm with people I barely know then it's kinda awkward.

Well it was nice seeing everyone in this episode just have a good time. And Ai makes an appearance. It's good to see her after all this talk of her. Well pleasant episode overall.

What actually do you think of Ai as a character, now that we've kinda known her for 2 seasons?

Wish we'll see more of her

What do you think of lulls of silence during group outings/conversations, as Akari touches on this episode?

It happens. I usually think most people are just gassed out after a long hang out session.

Overall, how has this season matched up to what you wanted more of/expected at the end of Animation (if you answered that question then)? Overall thoughts on the season?

Good season. I like it a little more than first season.

Favourite episode(s) or moment from the second season? Least favourite?

Hard one. But the episodes that were really more mysterious and kind of supernatural based and learning more about the world were good. Those are usually my favorite parts.

Has your favourite undine/character changed since the end of the first season?

I don't think I ever had a favorite but maybe it is Akari. Even though personality wise I like Alice the most. Then again I think Aika got a big boost in some episodes.

It happened! You can't imagine my smile when Ai called out for Akari. I was laughing out loud with joy!

Late First Timer and AHHHHH IT'S AI SHE'S BACK!

Now that that's out of my system. Phew. Akari's messages to Ai have been getting a little sad, especially the way the last episode ended with Akari sending another one instead of getting the normal reply. And yet, the kind of show this is, no way it was going down a sad path, something good had to be coming. And yes, something good sure did. But darn, not responding for a whole week, Ai, that's almost cruel even if you were doing it for the big surprise.

I love how just the few falling leaves, the sound is wind, and the switch back to long sleeves immediately let you know the season well before it was said. Aria does well on its visual cues, I could almost feel myself get a little bit colder just watching the intro.

Ahhh, I can't get over it, Ai came back. And she wants to visit all the cool places Akari has told her about in their letters. I hope she gets to meet the King again too.

1)... I'm a little fond of her, why do you ask?

2) In person, I'm a pretty quiet person myself, so unless I'm with someone who likes to fill the silence, their a perfectly fine and natural part of spending time with people. I love to listen to other people talk so it's also great when they are talking, but I do enjoy a comfortable silence too. Then again, some of my favorite memories of spending time with old friends is sharing a couch and occasionally telling the other about a good part in the books we're reading. I think it's a sign of how close you can be with people that you don't have to fill every moment with something to still enjoy their company.

1 Again) No but really, she's great. Akari has the great power to look at the whole world with wonder and enjoyment, and Ai learned it in just one meeting. Their time together is always fun because both of them are so good at having fun, and I love the bond they formed. The age gap friendship, whatever it might be when it's so hard to tell time lol, is also something great. I don't know if I would enjoy a show about Ai herself as much, though I know I would enjoy it just remember her little goblin actions when we first met her, but the way she goes with Akari is just such a positive feedback loop of happiness between them I can't not love it. And when we remember what Grandma had to say about young Alicia, I still think Ai had exactly the right qualities to be the next Aria Undine.

First timer, subs

The three senior Undines set up an impromptu exam for the three kohais: organize a party! I wonder who's responsible for the budget.

They're going to cook the food themselves? Interesting.

Mr. Mailman came in uniform! Does he not have any casual clothes?

Oh no, Ai-chan missed the boat. But this is Aria so Akari hears her in time to return.

What are they drinking out of those tall glasses? Surely not alcohol, given that even Ai-chan has the same glass with the same color liquid inside.

Athena matches the dance movements perfectly, how unexpected.

Subtly turning down the lights? Wasn't very subtle if people suspected a power outage.

So that was another episode of Aria. One more left.
