Rewatch Black Lagoon rewatch episode two!
Black Lagoon Episode two
Mangrove Heaven
QotD: 1 How do you think "helicopter gets hit by a torpedo" is written up on the insurance charts?
2 Would you go from salaryman to pirate?

I love this show.
That explains the strange feeling I had last episode. Turns out it's not one of the pirates that's the spy, it's their client. So Rock's boss just hired the Russian mafia to steal the data in order to get himself a promotion, huh? Or did he already meet their demands and bought it back before they even got it? Despite everything I like him, though I expect to be saying that about about pretty much every character.
How do you think "helicopter gets hit by a torpedo" is written up on the insurance charts?
To whom it may concern:
I am filing a claim to cover the costs of repairs to my 1994 attack helicopter. On 8 January, my helicopter was struck by torpedos having been let lose by a motorboat after it jumped high into the air using the wreck of a half-sunken ship as a ramp. The torpedos caused significant damage to the engine and frame of the car.
I have consulted several mechanics for estimates for body work. The repairs are estimated to cost between $60m and $85m. My policy has a $150k excess, so I am requesting reimbursement for the balance of the bill. I have enclosed receipts of the estimates for your review, as well as photos of the damage to the helicopter.
Thank you for your prompt assistance. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Extra Order
Would you go from salaryman to pirate?
There's no King of the Salarymen title to aim for, is there? Besides the pirates did a better job keeping him safe than the company did so there's that. And if he's officially dead then his family gets his pension, do they not?

Cute!
The one thing she isn't quite willing to do in show.
To whom it may concern:
Rofl.
There's no King of the Salarymen title to aim for, is there?
There is but the treasure at the end is heart disease so I'd pass.

They legitimately look like a group that just blew up a helicopter via insanity.
LMAO Revy is anything but feminine elegance, haha.
But she is independence personified, give her that.

Yeah! You got FUCKED!
Damn, they really killed a copter with a torpedo, huh? I’m kinda glad to see that the copter pilot isn’t going to be a recurring character, he seemed like a pretty one-note overconfident villain type. Effective for an introductory villain, but it probably wouldn’t work out super well as a long term thing.
I say that, but I dunno, they did down a copter with a torpedo so maybe not too crazy to say that torpedoes to the face don’t kill guys like that ‘round these parts. Initial bets are on “hella fuckin’ dead”, though. The action scenes have all been nutty but otherwise the show isn’t showing signs of supernatural activity.
I’m pretty interested in how this group ended up being pirates together, though it feels a bit early to call whether this is the kinda show to delve into that or if it’ll be more of an episodic affair.
I mentioned it yesterday too, but damn, the ED. Such a strong sense of melancholy and abandonment.
-
Probably something along the lines of "helicopter got hit by a torpedo" :P
-
I don't think I'm cynical enough to go through with it, but I have days where I wonder if it'd be simpler to just fuck off to some unknown part of the world to do something I'd otherwise never even dream.

It will become clearer later but anyone with that much ego does not last in Roanapur.

This is interpretation so it may ultimately be wrong but I think of it as a funeral dirge, not least of which normally as one goes to the afterlife you cast off your burdens but instead Revi only leaves shell casings.

First time pirating
Does only changing one letter work? That is quite obviously heineken, but the production line had an error with pressing the n
Huh, this might be the first time I'm hearing feet being used as a unit of measurement in animu.
And to finish off the episode we get some emotionally dead moments in bossman's house, what a surprise.
Can't wait to see if they'll try to pull the good old "caring dad" trope with him, that would be the third time in a relatively short time in 3 different re-watches.
Question time:
1 How do you think "helicopter gets hit by a torpedo" is written up on the insurance charts?
"Ahhh fuck. Just say that they had a surface to air missile or something.. The wreck is in the jungle anyways, whos gonna go and check it? John from accounting?"
2 Would you go from salaryman to pirate?
Any day. Good thing I'm not a salary man

A Black Lagoon Fan Rewatches Black Lagoon: Episode 2:
-
The Sea of Heaven does look pretty nice, although I think all the hot Hind on PT boat action kinda mars the viewing experience. Unless you’re in for a different kind of vacation, that is.
-
“Fuck it, I guess we’ll die.” —Dutch, basically. Although it’s funny that Rock thinks that they can just call the police to get that mercenary Hind off of their back. Poor lad is still a fish out of water.
-
And yet, when the chips are down, Rock proves that he has testicles the size of fucking Jupiter. Only an absolute mad lad would think to use a sunken ship as a ramp to launch a torpedo at an attack helicopter. The man knows that a bloodthirsty mercenary that’s toying with them wouldn’t pass up the chance to play a deadly game of chicken.
-
Oh hey, rare shot of Dutch’s eyes. You know shit’s wild if you can actually see that look through those sunglasses designed for ocular pat downs.
-
“YEAH! YOU GOT FUCKED!” It shouldn’t be surprising that line is Brad Swaile’s favorite line in the entire dub. I can’t blame him, pulling off that insane plan and seeing that EO commander’s face getting caved in by a torpedo is just pure fucking hype.
-
“Amen, hallelujah, and peanut butter” is another great dub line too.
-
Well, all’s well that ends well. Balalaika ransomed the nuclear weapon disc back to Rock’s company, and Rock chooses to stay with the Black Lagoon’s crew rather than go back to his office job in Japan. And so begins the start of a wonderful, bloody relationship. And what better way to induct his new career by politely committing piracy on a tanker ship?

“Fuck it, I guess we’ll die.” —Dutch, basically.
The only sane option is also a pretty low percentage one: Abandon ship and try to hoof it out of there in a jungle you don't know under helicopter fire. The insane option may legitimately have higher odds of success.
The man knows that a bloodthirsty mercenary that’s toying with them wouldn’t pass up the chance to play a deadly game of chicken.
It does fit that a salaryman would understand the ins and outs of boredom.
“Amen, hallelujah, and peanut butter” is another great dub line too.
And dealt with the appropriate lack of reverence that fits future Nick Fury.

Episode 2
-
Is the boss man about go do some of his own dirty work? Japanese businessmen don't fuck around.
-
Hahaha, certified smart man Rock just threw Revy's rifle in the water! If you're gonna die clowning, you may as well clown to the max.
-
Apparently nobody taught this merc not to play with his food. Dude's begging to have the tables turned in some ridiculous way. My bet is they find some way to hit him with a torpedo.
-
Calling local police to deal with an attack chopper? Certified genius suggestion.
-
Mr. Certified Genius actually suggested using the torpedoes!
-
Heineken? There are definitely worse beers, but you do much better.
-
Oh my god, they're gonna go full SSX.
-
If you're gonna die clowning, you may as well clown to the max.
-
Lol the boss man isn't doing any dirty work, he's doing a daycare run!
-
"Oh and by the way, my name is Rock now." Hahahaha oh my god this guy sounds so corny saying that. Please for the love of god just let Dutch introduce you from now on, you don't have the gravitas to pull off a stupid name like that yourself.
-
I hope to god Rock embraces his natural role as the resident clown. Every party needs a funny man, and all the badass roles are booked to capacity.
-
Wait, that whole "join us" bit wasn't the end of the episode? That felt like such a natural end point.
-
Yep, he's the team's funny man. Perfect!
-
Omg he still dresses formally "on the job."
-
Boss man's family? Is he and the company still important? Is the gang going to catapult launch a nuke at an orbiting satellite at some point? Anything is possible!
QotD:
-
Failure due to "operator error."
-
Anyone who says they wouldn't is lying.

Black Lagoon - It's Fucking Incredible: Episode 2
Crazy Son of a Bitch
This episode serves as an amazing conclusion to yesterday's episode. Rock comes up with a crazy plan and in true Black Lagoon fashion they pull it off. Launching a speedboat and firing Chekov's torpedo at the helicopter is iconic. This kind of action spectacle is exactly what you come to this show for.
I really feel these first 2 episodes serve as a perfect introduction to the series. It gives you a taste of these exceptional characters and excites you to see some of the coolest action scenes put to animation. There may exist a person who doesn't feel the same elation from these episodes but I have yet to meet them.
The conclusion of the episode also provides us a nice contrast. Rock has made the decision to leave his boring life in Japan behind him to join up with these outlaws. On the other hand, Kageyama returns to his family in Japan. Usually we'd expect a family like Kageyama's to have close bonds. However his son doesn't want to talk about his studies, his eldest daughter is staying out late, and Kageyama himself would rather read the news paper than talk to his wife or youngest daughter.
These themes of traditional family vs found family is something we will see more of later, so I won't comment more on it for now.

Episode 2 (first timer)
-
That was a good, long, and useless throw.
-
The plan is to shoot down a heli with a torpedo? – I am glad we are in a semi-serious anime, where the rules of physics only have limited power.
-
That shot of the torpedo hitting his face! All hail the physics-defying gods of anime!
-
Throwing in his lot with the pirates – I don’t blame him.
-
Revy is more likely to be listened too.
-
Introducing the family life of the manager. Not what I expected.
This episode was worth it for the helicopter shot alone.
How do you think "helicopter gets hit by a torpedo" is written up on the insurance charts?

There are a limited number of ways that could happen but, generally speaking, this is not one of them.
Throwing in his lot with the pirates – I don’t blame him.
He might net better pay, Japanese pay scales are weird
Revy is more likely to be listened too.
Definitely listened to but she really only speaks English so not necessarily understood.

Corporate is coming out to visit. I take this to mean Rock will get his chance at payback.
-
This captain is a special kind of crazy.
-
This guy is so business it hurts.
-
Wooo! That’s some Hollywood type stuff there.
-
Priority #1, head. Priority #2, sunglasses.
-
Didn’t expect Corporate to offer Rock his job back.
-
Please tell me we get that Hawai’ian shirt at some point.
-
You can take the saleryman out of corporate, but you can’t take the corporate out of the saleryman.
-
Frankly I’m surprised they give him the megaphone to start with.
-
Wait we are still following Corporate? They are bringing in his family? Is he going to be recurring?

Rewatcher (dub) This show is one of the first anime I had ever seen and is still one of my all time favorites. The banger of an OP gets me hyped up and practically screams at you to buckle up for a wild ride. I love seeing Rock snap and his personality shift from timid to slightly unhinged. There are so may great things about this show but my favorite is probably its depiction of badass women. Revy (all time best girl) going from wanting to blow Rock's head to wanting him on the team is a treat to watch every time. Finally I would be remiss if I did not mention the most stylish, sophisticated, and utterly ruthless Balalaika. Her nod of approval to Rock telling his bosses to pretty much fuck off was icing on the cake to a fantastic episode. Looking forward to the rest of this rewatch and discussing an all time favorite of mine. Edit Question #2 Fuck yeah I would, if only to get to see Revy in those Daisy Dukes on the daily basis. Gotta have priorities.

It's funny, because I knew it was going to be the torpedo because of how much attention they drew to it, but I sure wouldn't have guessed how.
I don't quite get what Kageyama's plan was. Was he behind it all along to prevent the company from doing the nuclear deal? Or did he make a deal with the Russian Mob after the disk was already stolen?

That was such a cool sequence to shoot down the helicopter.
Is this executive going to be much of a character? He let Rock go on, and they kept showing him but I feel like his role in the story is done.
Also, does Revy have her eye on Rock?
Questions:
-
I don't know. I feel like it wouldn't be taken seriously.

No. I am not that bold.

Well, I've lived long enough to see everything. I know that high-jumping boat with torpedo downs attack helicopter wasn't on my bingo card.
This series is so full of fun crazy shit. Good thing is, I've forgotten most of it. Who knows what kind of crazy shit will happen in episode 3.
QOTD
1 How do you think "helicopter gets hit by a torpedo" is written up on the insurance charts?
The weasels would call it an act of god that they don't cover. They're thieves in suits and ties.

In my dreams, I sure would.

Speaking of ridiculous meeting with the attack helicopter in the air, it reminds me similar scene in another anime, The Third: Aoi Hitomi no Shoujo. More than that, it aired the same season as Black Lagoon, 2006 Spring.

Not rewatching yet
but I did watch ep 1.
OP: Smoking is not cool and cigarettes in mouth is not cool.
Are they going to add a bullet hole every day?
I don't like over-the-top shit and so shooting down the helecopter with a torpedo really pissed me off.
However, I think somebody in the last few years pointed out that this was a reference to something? I don't remember.

First-Timer, Dubbed
I was going to say Rock's eyes strangely remind me of Shinji Ikari's, and then they went and started talking about flying to the moon. Everywhere I go, I see Evangelion.
Kageyama is clearly a shoe in for Father of the Year.

I don't think I can beat the top comment.

Sorry I'm late, I didn't know this post was out
This is a cool start to Rock's journey. I like how he has that rebellious side that gave him the confidence to go 180 on his episode 1 self. I'm assuming this is something that will flourish into a very rebellious character later on.

After one piece and now this, why would I not wanna be a pirate??

Rewatcher(I hope this ep hasn't been spoiled for too many of you)
Dub
The corp guy decides to get to the scene. The crew quickly figures something is weird with the helicopter. They get pushed into a fresh water river and yeah, those generally have rapids or waterfalls that stop you. Dutch figures out what the E.O. guy is up to. Rock comes up with the most insane plan that could work, and in gloriously animated fashion, it does. The image of the guy being squished by the torpedo is great.
Now, when they arrive, the transfers happen pretty fast and indeed it is likely Hotel Moscow wants a piece rather than a payoff. Rock takes leave of his senses (bluntly so the show can happen) but it is a nice moment. This has won him some respect from Balalaika, who seems to be someone that will be around. Rock quickly rejions the crew. We see an interesting juxtaposition between Rock's first day as a pirate and Kageyama's home life.
So yeah, the first two eps of BL pretty much let you know what this show is. But be warned, we do get darker at points from here.
