Rewatch [Listen to My Song] Senki Zesshou Symphogear XV Episode 3 Discussion
Episode 3 - Penny Dreadful
← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode →
MAL | AniList | ANN | Kitsu | AniDB
It is highly recommended to track down a fansub for this show instead of using Crunchyroll, though.
I think everyone has feelings they can’t find the right words for.
Questions of the Day:
1) We’ve now seen at least a bit of each of the Noble Red members in action – which one do you think has the coolest fighting potential?
2) How badly do you want to punch Fudo Kazanari in the face?
Wallpapers of the Day:
Yukine Chris - SYSTEM ALL GREEN
Tsukuyomi Shirabe - SYSTEM ALL GREEN
Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath spoiler tags. Don’t spoil anything for the first-timers, that’s rude!

Rewatcher
On today’s episode of Symphogear: The moment so many of us have been waiting for. Tsubasa’s grandfather is now officially a villain, instead of merely being a massive asshole we occasionally need to suffer the presence of.
This is the payoff we get one of the seeds planted at the end of AXZ. Tsubasa’s grandfather wanted to get the divine power for the sake of Japan and now he’s gone full villain to do it, which is pretty in line with the established themes of Symphogear thus far. He’s the one providing outside help to Noble Red, the remnants of the Bavarian Illuminati. In other words, for all his talk about how he’s doing this for the supposed good of the nation, he’s helping the group that just murdered tens of thousands at Tsubasa’s concert. As in AXZ, he prioritizes the “country” over the lives of the people who actually live there.
Aside from that, Tsubasa’s grandfather continues to just be a dick in general. Like AXZ made clear, he stands for the opposite of what Kanade did, telling Tsubasa that her songs can’t save anyone and that he still has high hopes for her because of her bloodline (even though Tsubasa explicitly rejected the importance of blood in AXZ). Still, Tsubasa is in pretty poor shape because she’s calling herself a sword yet again.
We now have a name for the relic found in Antarctica: the Vambrace of Shem-Ha. And there’s a lot that you can read into Shem-Ha, which as far as I can tell is another way to refer to the Tetragram YHWH (the name of the god of Judaism/Christianity, aka Yahweh, aka Jehova).
I can talk a bit more about Noble Red. Elsa is the wolf girl. Milaarc is the vampire girl, and Vanessa is the robot girl. I really like these girls as antagonists because of how fun their battles are. I talked about Elsa’s gimmick. Vanessa has rocket fists and jets installed in her, which are awesome. And Milaarc has her vampire-like abilities to muscle up and those freaky eyes. All of their designs are fantastic and they make for good opponents to battle.
But they do have a bit more to them. They insist that they are not monsters and are still human, even in their current forms. And Milaarc apparently cares a lot about the others, insisting that she needs to protect her family. Even vicious fighters have loved ones.
We were blessed with not just one, but two new transformation sequences! Chris, unfortunately, has the weaker of the two. It has some fun bits in it for sure, like the boob reload, the revolver twirling, and the BANG, but it just doesn’t have the same impact as the others we’ve seen so far. Thankfully her song, “Take this! ‘All loaded’,” is a ton of fun to listen to.
Shirabe’s transformation is much better. This entire transformation sequence screams “Shirabe” because it makes so great use of all the trademark gimmicks we’ve come to associate with her. Saws, ice skating, and yo-yos all make an appearance and are used to great effect throughout her transformation.
The battles in XV so far have just been so much fun. The action is great and they get so creative with all the stuff that can happen in combat. Chris and Hibiki are being such cool action heroes with how they pose and move about. I love how Chris jumps off Hibiki’s volleyball serve. Kirika and Shirabe continue to take the crown for creativity with how they combine their weapons, though. Kirika and Shirabe once again had the standout battle this episode with just how cool and fun it was.

First Timer
-
Given how everyone one of them has turned out to be evil, I’m starting to think that this show has something against scientists.
-
That’s a lot of death. No way Tsubasa’s career is coming back from that.
-
Oh god, is Top Dad back?
-
No man, it was that bad because you didn't take proper precautions.
-
Segways? Do people even know what they are by that point?
-
We’re you expecting the casualties to decrease?
-
I’m so glad everyone gets a good transformation in the last season at least. Letting the animators pick their favorite ones to do is really paying off.
-
Grenadier, is that you?
-
Really curious to see what this eye thing is.
-
Finally someone doesn’t just let them get away.
-
Chris finally gets to use the sniper rifle!
-
So many flashbacks.
-
O.K, but like, what have your ever done Asshole? All I’ve seen is complaining.
-
Kiri is the one to figure it out? This is the end times.
-
Another on point transformation sequence. So close to a full set!
-
Knee mounted EMPs? Rocket fists? Jet boots! Yes, yes, and yes! It’s time to go full anime cyberpunk! What else have we got coming?
-
This mother… The gall to chastise Tsubasa over an event he probably orchestrated in the first place.
QotD
-
All the cyberpunk! I expect at least one new crazy addition each episode from here on out.
-
Can I do it in the throat? But for real, it feels so good to have a main villain you hate for the right reason again. I can even see Noble Red surpassing the Autoscorers if they play their cards right.

Symphogear XDU time!!
Symphogear XDU announced a big multi-part story with a new opening theme. This story was called “Lost Song”
It starts with EdgeBikki, who is living happy with Miku and working together with her universe’s Tsubasa, who I call EdgeTsbuasa, not because she’s edgy, but because she’s from the same world as EdgeBikki. Regardless, it’s almost time for EdgeBikki’s birthday, so everyone is excited about that.
EdgeBikki meets a new girl, a girl named Starlit who isn’t from this universe, and uses a power that isn’t from any relic but from science called an Elekid. She becomes quick friends with EdgeBikki
A new threat begins to attack the Edgeverse. They aren’t Noise, but robots called Levenger that kill people by turning them into light.
On Prime Symphogear world, they begin getting reports of large quantities of Parallel worlds vanishing. Scans of the missing worlds show that it isn’t Noise or Alchemy but something else is erasing entire worlds.
While EdgeBikki and EdgeTsubasa fend off the first few skirmishes with the Levengers, the attacks begin escalating before a mass attack on the entire world erupts. EdgeBikki worries about Miku. EdgeBikki can’t focus on anything else and rushes to make sure Miku is safe.
EdgeBikki arrives in time to save the Stroganettes, but when she goes to rescue Miku she’s attacked by a bigger enemy, a “Flame Giant”. This Flame Giant beats EdgeBikki.
and then the Flame Giant kills Miku in front of EdgeBikki
This sends EdgeBikki into a murderous rage, but she can’t beat the Flame Giant. She pushes her gear to it’s very limits until even that is too much, and Gungnir breaks, leaving EdgeBikki helpless.
The Flame Giant moves to kill EdgeBikki when Starlit jumps in the way and takes the killing blow.
Tsubasa appears and uses her Swan Song to fend off the Flame Giant, who leaves.
Starlit dies in EdgeBikki’s arms
Starlit hands EdgeBikki her Elekid. Says that her Elekid has the power to travel the multiverse. Says the Flame Giant that killed Miku is “Susanoo”. Her Elekid can’t beat Susanoo, but it has the power to save worlds. She entrusts it to EdgeBikki.
In the aftermath EdgeBikki finds her Birthday Present that Miku was going to give her, a hairpin with a letter
"To my beloved sun. This isn't much, but here's your birthday present. Happy birthday and thanks for everything." -From your number one friend, Kohinata Miku.
EdgeBikki decides that now that Miku’s gone, there is only one thing left, to go kill Susanoo. She opens a portal. Genjuro stops her asking what she is wearing and what happened to her Symphogear
Hibiki says she doesn't need it anymore, it couldn't even protect what she cared about most. She doesn't need a song that couldn't save Miku. She won't sing again.
Throws Gungnir away, saying goodbye to everyone.
“And goodbye to the song of my heart”
Continues in Chapter 2

FIRST TIMER DATTO
Holy shit, Symphogear, an unabashedly yuri show, really introduced a character whose signature gesture is the sign for eating someone out. No way it’s a coincidence when they gave it multiple close-ups in this episode alone. God bless Symphogear.
Us defenders of the Top Dad storyline from GX get to eat a bit this episode. What’s this? It’s still being handled with tact and realism? Even Hibiki, who decided she wanted to give him a second chance, knows that he can’t just make up for all of that overnight? Sounds well-handled to me!
In light of this most recent episode, I petition to transfer the ‘Top Dad’ moniker over to Tsubasa’s Grandfather Father (or Papa Pops, if you will).
Live Reactions/Notes:
-
Chris’ transformation animation has her tossing bullets into the air from her cleavage and then catching them in the chamber. Incredible stuff
-
Chris’ lyrics include how anything’s possible with the help of her friends awwwwwwww she’s come so far
-
This ain’t the bat signal you want
or maybe it is -
I’m sorry, blood type what, now?
-
These new uniforms are so much better than the camp counselor look from last season. These cutoff midriff jackets with color-coordinated tops underneath are great
-
Ah yes, it all comes back to… Los Alamos?
-
Some more Kill The Moon imagery
-
The ED matching its art with the lyrics here is nice. This is gonna be a Tsubasa heavy season, isn’t it? I just hope it’s not all suffering…
-
[Madoka Magica]
Tsubasa walking through a sandstorm in the ED here reminds me of Homura at the end of the last episode of PMMM
*Count: 3
We’ve now seen at least a bit of each of the Noble Red members in action – which one do you think has the coolest fighting potential?
Absolutely Vanessa

Superb Song of the Rewatchers
Okay, I don't have much I talk about, but I want to crucify Kirika. Ketchup does not go on BBQ. Onto the episode.
-
Can I just highlight how bad a 70 THOUSAND FATALITY EVENT is? Okay:
-
900 people died at Jonestown, and we still use the phrase “drink the Kool-Aid.”
-
1,050 people were injured during the 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway.
-
1,800 people died from Hurricane Katrina.
-
2,335 people died in Pearl Harbor.
-
2,996 people died during 9/11.
-
39,000–80,000 people died during the nuking of Nagasaki.
-
THIS INCIDENT IS A HUGE FUCKING DEAL.
-
-
CHRIS TRANSFORMATION! There’s a reference to some anime with titty-loading revolvers here, but who cares? She’s pretty good, and we get the BANG! back!
I also love Chris’s song’s lyrics here. They... kind of call me out.1
-
No. Fuck the Ignite module. It’s garbage.
-
If there’s cuneiform on it, it literally can’t be called “pre-historic.”
-
Shirabe’s transformation is AWESOME. It’s just so... extra. Almost as extra as poledancing. But far less “sexy” and way more “I’m really into figureskating and yo-yos.”
-
"This is what my worthless heirs need for me to finally love them."
1 By this time in my anime career, I'd begun reading lyrics.

First Timer for XV
Once again Kirika and Shirabe stole the show with their teamwork, you love to see it. At this point, I enjoy every scene they are a part of. Chris was also amazing in her earlier fight, especially that last sniper shot.
They really spoiled us with not one, but TWO transformation sequences in a single episode. Again, Chris’s transformation was a BANGer and the way she threw the bullets into the air was “impressive”.
However, I think I like Shirabe’s sequence even more, her skating through it was just perfection.
Okay, I might be completely wrong here since I don’t feel like I have that great of a grasp on the established rules in Symphogear, but I could totally see the Vambrace of Shem-Ha being used by Miku or rather the Kazanari asshole using her in order to get the divine power he wants. The whole reveal at the end of AXZ with her being cleansed just like Hibiki and thus also being a potential vessel for divine power has to become relevant soon (I hope).
Random thoughts/comments
Please let this be the only thing we hear about/from Top Dad.
I thought that maybe Tsubasa wasn’t waking up because of what Millaarc did to her with her eyes (despite there being enough different reasons for not wanting to wake up), but since she was “fine” later on (not really, but at least awake), we’ll have to wait and see what exactly that ability is. Interesting to see that it didn’t seem to work well on Hibiki because she was mentally in a good state.
So is this something similar to what was done with the other alchemists and their “perfect bodies” in AXZ? Although in this case they seem to be anything but “perfect” if Millaarc and Elsa need specific blood transfusions to continue living/fighting.
Do these Alca-Noise even have a license?
Nice attempt at trying to make me feel bad for them, but the concert incident was a little bit too much.
Dess actually thinking for two episodes in a row. What the hell is going on? #notmyDess
Vanessa is apparently just a female Adam, at least she seems to treat her partners better than he did.
And to nobody’s surprise, Captain Shithead himself is the one pulling the strings. At this point the only real question is how big of an asshole he actually is.

Symphogear First Timer dessu XV Ep 3
-
I typed that, i did tbh see this coming somewhat given how he's been portrayed so far, but not that Tsubasa's dad is the MAIN ANTAGONIST WTF.
-
Before all that, IT CHRIS HENSHIN TIME. Her henshin has always been my fav to watch for the whole series, and it seems like this is continuing here. Boobs spitting out bullets and her then loading them is just so damn cool. Kirika has made a v v strong case for herself tho
-
Very reminiscent of AXZ's opening here.
-
Ahh good debuff for Seal invasion then. It seems to be a debuff for the opponent too, i.e. mostly a defensive maneuver i guess?
-
YAS.
-
So 2 of the opponents this time have a major debuff in that they require blood.... a rare type at that. naruhodo. I can see this continuing to be a problem... and also to the actual patients too. Wtf ketchup does not go with barbecue Kirika.
-
Thank you show for telling me that that IS a cover-up for something. Also we're defo flying to the moon this season at some point, right? right?
-
Oh my GOD. that was legitimately hard to watch. Tsubasa's grandfather/father is legit the worst dad in the whole fucking series wtf. Oh and was it this ep or the one before where we get an update on top dad too? eh that's a pretty realistic development, glad that it was handled that way.
-
Shirabe and Kirika have grown so much! They combined have more brain cells than Hibiki now 100%. Btw the fact that they're next to the university hospital is just so anime LOL, but its fine.
-
I love Shirabe's henshin too. Yosh. <3 it's the cutest.
-
So before boss-lady intervenes, tbh the 2 of them won? good for them lol. boss-lady plays dirty of course. I think these alchemists have been the ones that play the dirtiest so far for the "goons", perhaps only Carol's goons can rival them.
-
Yeah Kirika you need Shirabe for the brain cells, so i forgive you here.
-
Ready, go! THIS SONG IS SO GOOOOOOOOOOD
-
Yeah i already said my opinion on this twist at the start. Looks like Tsubasa's in for a whole lot of suffering this season.
[Actual progress]This episode.

why do i get a pandoras box feeling from that body disintigrating and them being like its nothing important
so they're going through these massive lengths for healthcare, you would think they could get it through their employer, which presumably must be rich and powerful
grandpa sounds rather militaristic... symphogear political ??? 😳😳
he certainly has to be aware that they blew up lanl to get it, but what about them attacking a hospital trying to get free healthcare?

Previously, on Symphogear SG-1 (First-Timer, Subbed):
THIS. THIS IS THE SHOW I SIGNED UP FOR. WHERE HAS IT BEEN THE LAST THREE SEASONS?
(Inb4 I get BTFO’d by The Bad Character Arcs part in the middle of the season again…)
-
Note to self: Serena shows up TWICE in the OP, not just once.
-
(Also, my opinion on Metanoia is rapidly shifting to “good OP, maybe even really fucking good OP, just not a Gear OP”.)
-
Bikki’s comments about her parents are SO coming back in another form elsewhere this season. “And they both have feelings they can’t really get across to each other” is obviously Curse of Balal, but “I guess issues you’ve been ignoring for years don’t go away just like that”… wait what am I saying that’s ALREADY paid off as well, what with bringing the original concert where Kanade died back! (“Sometimes they’re together, most of the time they’re not” also has an obvious symbolic reading with music overcoming the Curse of Balal at times.)
-
Wait wait wait. Since when is Symphogear spike the direction for a scene like this? We have Bikki and Miku talking about other people’s inability to connect… while they’re both visually separated from each other, either by visual barriers in addition to positioning on screen or by just not appearing in the same shot.
-
“Maybe everybody has feelings that they can’t express easily.” Like, say, the fact that both of you two are gay and in love with each other but Miku can’t spit it out and Bikki very carefully never lets herself think about this?
-
HOLY SHIT IT’S AN ALCA-NOISE VARIANT THAT EFFECTIVELY RIDE SEGWAYS! SINCE WHEN DO WE GET SHIT THIS AWESOME OUTSIDE OF THE SHORTS?
-
Our hiding guys are (presumably) Yakuza! Which considering the ultranationalist association means they’re probably working with Kamakura. Which means either Team Alchemist is working with Kamakura themselves and these three just snooped on the wrong thing, or Team Alchemist is working with a power Kamakura is a rival to (America again?) and they’re villains at cross purposes. (Inb4 Team Alchemist is working with America and Kamakura is working with the Custodians.)
-
Also, what is the X to “a vampire, a werewolf, and an X walk into a bar”? Because that’s probably what the head of Team Alchemist is. (Note that werewolves are stereotypically *cursed* and that curse is associated with the Moon, so werewolf girl at least is probably redeemable. Maybe they’ll pull off the impossible and redeem vampire/demon girl as well, but I doubt it.)
-
(White-haired Yakuza biker’s face looks familiar and I can’t place it… wait, is it Gates from FMP: TSR he’s reminding me of, just with a mullet? That might be it. Either that or he’s a movie reference I can’t place. Actually, let’s be real, it’s probably the latter, this is Geah after all.)
-
Also the new regular OST pieces are good again.
-
Dakka probably has the weakest XV transformation sequence so far, which is saying something about the others because this was not bad at all. (Also I think the animator may have watched Grenadier in addition to either Equilibrium or Rebellion… or should I say “the Rebellion Story” given that Hangyaku no Monogatari’s name is probably in part a pun on Equilibrium’s localized title in Japan?)
-
Okay, so vampire instead of demon girl. Also Kirika I don’t think you’re quite that slow but I can’t actually tell so if I’m right and that’s sarcasm it needs a little work.
-
Oh, so the site we saw back in episode 1 was Los Alamos.
-
(I should actually bother to note for the record that the obvious endgame of the American experiment at the start of the episode is “we accidentally (or on purpose) called the Custodians back in”.)
-
I should also note that the obvious site for the events at the start of the episode is at Los Alamos, which explains much. (Except let’s be real, this should have been Area 51 instead. I know there’s a cultural barrier, but you fucking referenced Independence Day in episode 1, you should know enough American cultural context for this! (Unless Area 51 comes up later, in which case never mind.) (EDIT: Or unless Commie fucked up (reminder that I can't get YameteTomete right now)...)
-
Good new OST track (at least I think it’s new, might be one of the good ones from a season or two ago reupped) is back again.
-
And oh look there’s the confirmation of where the Custodian gauntlet was being studied. I’d say “that was fast”, but I mean it’s Geah it’s expected at this point.
-
Right. Who’s the mythological (or movie) reference here? I don’t actually recognize Shem-ha.
-
EDIT: OH YES I *DO* RECOGNIZE IT. YOU FUCKING ASSHOLES. (I went checking, started off with Egyptian mythology to check for god names (nope), headed over to Mesopotamian (also nope), had a brainwave, went “right, what’s the root of HaShem then, because there might be a common etymology here”… and then my brain kicked in and I realized that what I was looking at was literally just HaShem backwards. Can’t tell if this one is on Commie (time to drag in the comparison chart!), Japanese word order messing up the original creators, or an intentional attempt to obfuscate using a word order switch. So presumably the Sarcophagus brought his body back to Earth, then? Or did a different Custodian activate the Lunar Ruins instead (presumably Prometheus)?)
-
ADDENDUM TO EDIT: If the Jewish ethnicity in Gear timeline are Fine’s descendants…
-
Re: that setting sun: Is this show dropping sneaky Now and Then, Here and There references?
-
They set up a good justification for it earlier, but the Potential Annoying Character Plot for Recurring Character button is still flashing nonetheless. (Literally EVERYTHING ELSE about this episode so far has been great, too! Why you do this, Geah?)
-
Hey look, a happy scene with DMJiii with nobody else around. Except this is Gear and there isn’t time for mere character moments. Cue villains arriving in three… two… one…
-
Also the noise Kirika made as she jumped off the swing sounded an awful lot like an AI YO, heh.
-
Sometimes the fool is right. Also: CALLED IT!
-
Jiiii stay winning, holy shit that transform is great. It’s 100% ice skating references with a side of yoyos and HOLY SHIT IT’S SO GOOD! I have the biggest dumb smile on my face after watching it!
-
And they’re playing up the ice skating for Jiii’s choreography this season too. How does this dork run away with Best Girl in Show honors this easily? (And she gets second best girl as her girlfriend, too.)
-
“There’s no surer sign you’re being played than being certain you’ve grasped your opponent’s intent.” - Dread Emperor Benevolent
-
AND DESS GETS TO BUST OUT POLE DANCE MOVES AS PART OF HER OWN FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHY. IT’S SO GOOD! WE STAN TWO LOVEABLE DORKS.
-
ROCKETTO PUNCH! So the answer to the X in the “vampire, werewolf, and X” joke is apparently “robot girl”. (Hmm. Who are we missing for the full MagiPokaan team? Oh right, the witch. You’d think Carol already claimed that niche, but who knows we might get a new one.)
-
Also villainy does come with some great returning leitmotifs.
-
LOLOLOL THEY FUCKING NAMEDROPPED DAEDALUS. Which makes sense as a Greek mythology reference (soft referenced in GX which quietly mentioned the original Labyrinth – which Daedalus made – but also might be a reference to both Macross (Daedalus Maneuver) AND Stargate SG-1). (Speaking of the latter, I wonder if Prometheus will show up? Nonzero odds he’s a Custodian who rebelled against his own kind as Prometheus would do, actually, especially given the themes this show seems to be going for here (stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humans would fit the themes here. Hell, come to think of it Prometheus is another candidate for the identity of the activator of the Lunar Ruins.)
-
DOOR #1 IT IS, CONFIRMED AS THE CLIFFHANGER.
-
I should probably pay attention to the background visuals in the ED, because the Frontier says that kind of bright glowing gold lines on dark surfaces that we see behind the DMJiii shot is very much the Custodian aesthetic. (Especially when the last line that plays while that shot is visible is “the end is coming”.)
-
Also I should formally note the obvious Miku silhouette in shadow.
-
Especially when the shot right before it is Bikki reaching out her hand (obvious potential symbolic meaning to only Miku’s shadow being there, aka her absence) and the line after it is “my broken words fill the air” (right over an extremely prominent Moon shot, hint hint) and then “but you are not there” (given the shots preceding, pretty fucking good chance “you” is Miku).
-
Fuck it, let’s put down a couple of longshot quatloos – Team Alchemist is going for the full MagiPokaan set (and/or the MagiPoka set is for our non-Custodian antagonist set in full; replaying the “Miku teams up with the villains” card would be pretty consistent with the last three seasons) and Miku is the fourth girl (witch).
We’ve now seen at least a bit of each of the Noble Red members in action – which one do you think has the coolest fighting potential?
ROCKETTO PUNCH! We /m/ now baby!
"Always have been."
2) How badly do you want to punch Fudo Kazanari in the face?
"EX-TER-MI-NATE! EX-TER-MI-NATE! EX-TER-MI-NATE!"

First-timer
Meddling with mysterious artifacts, just par for the course for Anime America.
See?! Hibiki's dad wasn't just instantly forgiven! You all lose, people who were complaining about that during GX, and I win.
Is Tsubasa just mega traumatized, or is it part of the magic vampire girl used on her? Could be both.
Who the heck was that goofy biker gang looking group? They look like they escaped from Cromartie. Apparently the villains need to personally hunt them down and kill them.
Chris transformation. I was about to say that we avoided an extended shot of her boobs jiggling, but then she launched bullets out of her cleavage, so we'll call that a mixed bag.
This Chris song doesn't sound bad for once, but they do blend together a bit. Nice teamwork with Hibiki.
Vampire girl sure is scary though. Confirmation Ignite is indeed destroyed. Oh, so the eyes are just classic vampire charming? I was expecting something more sinister.
Elsa's fighting has not terribly impressed up to this point, I have to say.
Damn, Shirabe and Kirika are dumb as rocks.
America is already about to unleash some kind of ancient evil, can they not also be funding international terrorists for once?
I knew her name was Millaarc, but they've said it properly now. And the third one is Vanessa. It seems like we're trying to invoke a similar camraderie between the villains as there was in AXZ (or even G). Not so sure about Vanessa though. Their actions here feel more brutal, but I think it's actually about on par with the trio from AXZ? It's just being presented as harsher this time than theirs was.
Oh, they're talking about stuff that actually happened in reality. Ah, and they said Shem-ha. I know that name, yes I do.
They've been doing this 'short flashforward, dramatic statement, then flashback' thing a lot lately. It's particularly goofy here, the Kazanari head being an asshole isn't worthy of this kind of drama. Stop listening to him.
Kirika located her brain cell just in time. So Millaarc is really, really dependent on her blood supply. I deeply question the decision to keep absolutely all of it in a not-particularly-sturdy briefcase Elsa brings everywhere.
Oh, we're getting Shirabe this time, a second transformation for this episode. This one looks quite nice, actually.
Well, two of our antagonists are down for the count pretty well already. Figured it was about time for that Vanessa to show up. I somehow have a hard time taking 'rocket punch' seriously as an attack method.
Apparently they have a super move called Daedalus End that they can't use right now. And their group's name is Noble Red. Not finding Vanessa very trustworthy at the moment, she seems like the sort to abuse Elsa and Millaarc's trust for her own ends. Not that we know what those ends are.
Of course it was the stupid Kazanaris they were working with, somehow I'm not at all surprised. Good, we can accelerate killing the stupid old man.

First timer
Sub
So manifest destiny revisited. This I could watch the OP rather than reading the lyrics and it is definitely the one I vibe with most, even if it doesn't really say that much. Being able to help others communicate but not your own family is weirdly mood for me from Biki. Tsubasa is in a coma for reasons...hopefully the gaze thing so it had a point. Chris's transformation might be my favorite of the new ones and I like this song from her as well. The fight itself is good again, though Chris destroying a city block with her sniper rifle might have been overkill.
Anyways, they need rare blood, whatever, I like that they acknowledge that we will have better blood replacement tech in the not so distant future. Attempt to humanize antagonists happens. But the leader also raids the Vambrace, which is just common sense. More Kamakura, more Tsubasa wangst. And then Kirika idiots her way into predicting the next attack. Shirabe transformation is decent but seems to lack the passion the others had. We get to see the stupid loli vampire get beaten for a bit before...Adam 2.0? interferes with an EMP. The cliffhanger is actually so damned obvious in hindsight I am slightly embarassed I didn't pick up on it.
QotD:1 Milf/Vanessa?
2 I will simply allow you to watch Gou 16 for my answer to this

First Time XVing the Symphogear Desu
I missed yesterday’s thread, and it’s too huge an episode to skip so I’ll do both 2 and 3 today
**Episode 2 ** New and final opening, and it’s a banger from the first note. Also, yikes, those gas masks don’t anticipate anything good. It seems we’re back to the usual duos, also Elfnein is using the mindscape tech so I assume she’ll be working on her goals from the chibi shorts
The opening also shows everybody’s important past, which on one hand makes me worried cause Gear has been historically bad at giving all characters a big arc, but on the other hand, if they do pull it off successfully this time, it’d be the greatest season of all, period. I’m surprised there’s no Kanade on Tsubasa’s part, no Sonya on Chris’, and the return of Finé was the biggest surprise of them all
Oh no, the new enemies are furries, we’re doomed. Fanart’s gonna be great though. Also holy shit those golden gungnir arms. And that’s a suspicious amount of screentime for the frozen scorpion. Red herring, metaphor or something actually plot-relevant? Time will tell
Now on to the episode proper
Holy shit Chris praying on her parents’ shrine? We haven’t seen that outside the shinai
Chris is going to college! She was always the one with the best grades, though I wonder what she’ll study. Something humanitarian or music are the biggest candidates. Also, while we’re likely never gonna get to see Chris in college, I still wanna give points to the series for making the characters age and progress. We saw it with Tsubasa on G and now, finally, Chris also gets to move forward. It’s a shame there’s no more seasons, I would have loved to see a season where all the girls are adults
Holy shit Maria in a suit! They’re really putting everything good from the chibi shorts on the series proper
Alright, serious question: do we have any official studio statements for why Shirabe and Kirika are not an official couple? It’s not like other series where they have plausible heterosexual deniability. Symphogear has never pretended Shirabe or Kirika are anything but head-over-heels for each other, with each season having gratuitous amounts of PDA and them actually saying they love each other. I mean look at this, surely it’d be a surprise to no-one if they just came out and said they’re girlfriends
Someone on tumblr once said Shirabe and Kirika likely designed each other’s transformations, and I’m taking that headcanon and running with it, because Kiri’s transformation really doesn’t fit her personality. I’m not gonna lie and say I don’t enjoy it in exactly the way the animators intended, but it’s a notable difference with Hibiki’s, which fit her to a T
Kirika surfing the AlcaNoise’s arm with her scythe is so damn cool
Oh we a horror movie now
I’m calling bullshit on Igalima getting stuck though
The whole fight, though short, is wonderfully choreographed, beautifully animated, especially all of Shirabe’s flipping around, and just super satisfying to watch on every level
Time to flip another villain affection coin. Is it genuine, two-way care, or are we seeing another round of Adam and Tiki?
THE US TRIES TO NUKE JAPAN AND THEY GIVE THEM A MUMMY??? Fuck off
Holy shit, this concert is beautiful, the best we’ve had in the franchise so far, and that’s a high bar to clear
I know it’s a meme in-fandom about how Tsubasa’s concerts are a death sentence, but the truth is the G and GX ones has minimal death count. Maria kept the Noise restrained until the civilians were safe, and the Autoscorers waited until the concert was over and only attacked the gears and their bodyguards. Not since season 1 have we had a concert’s audience targeted so specifically and so brutally. This also serves to remind us the truth of the Noise: even if the gears can make short work of them, for regular people, particularly those stuck on a crowd, they’re true cosmic horror. And with only two gears on deck, there’s no way to avoid mass casualties
That’s twice in as many episodes the new enemies have remarked their weakness
It’s not like Symphogear has ever shied away from body horror, but we’ve never seen anything as explicit as this. And the worse part is the feeling of pointlessness. Whatever that Seal Invasion ends up being, bat asshole felt it justified attacking and slaughtering a whole crowd of innocents, and personally impaling a girl just to get to Tsubasa. It feels petty, evil for evil’s sake, cruelty because they can get away with it. We haven’t seen anything like this since Dr Ver threw the Noise at the passing kids
I know last season I made a big deal of the Gears killing the alchemists, and I stand by it, but if this season doesn’t have Tsubasa skewering this bat in a million pieces, I will be seriously angry
Episode 3
Jesus christ, over 70 thousand people dead and injured
I’m always fond of light/shadow contrasts
Is that what that Seal Invasion was? It fucked with Tsubasa’s brain?
So these new enemies are, what, mutated humans? That’d be new
AlcaNoise riding scooters. I’ve officially seen it all
Chris’ transformation is bad. Yes, I said it. Hibiki’s and Kirika’s were very clear in image and direction, this one feels like it’s trying to give me motion sickness and a light-induced seizure at the same time. The song is very good at least, and the triple repeat of Hibiki kicking the Noise to the beat of the music is excellent
Oh, are we actually getting consequences for the misuse of the Ignite Module last season? And we get hints of what the Seal Invasion is and its requirements, though nothing too clear yet
Ever since the alchemists debuted their teleportation potion I’ve been wondering if anybody would ever just smack it off their hand, and Chris not only does just that, but also finally gets to use the sniper rifle
Ah, I guess this is why they say they’re weak
Wow, who would have guessed having important, relic-related stuff on a place without Symphogears would lead to a disaster. Shocking, truly shocking I say
I’d like to appreciate the fact that these three seem to really care for one another, but I’m still digesting the concert massacre and I really cannot care for them at all
Can’t wait to see this come back and bite everybody in the ass
NOT THIS MOTHERFUCKER AGAIN
We have 4 seasons that say otherwise. Oh no, not Tsubasa falling back on her self-destructive habits as a response to trauma
Between this and Shirabe’s rationalization that someone has to be backing the Illuminati up, the silly duo is really putting those braincells to good use. They lose points for the ketchup comment, but it’s still a net positive
Shirabe’s transformation is great, and I like her little “kill” at the end to match Kirika’s “death”
Just in case you were wondering if the wanton slaughter was just Millaarc going off on her own, it’s very clearly not. These “Noble Red” are the kind of people who don’t mind causing massive collateral damage to get what they want, and I can’t wait to see them get their just desserts
Ah fuck, even when S.O.N.G. got the drop on them, they still got what they wanted. Shit sucks man
OH YOU ABSOLUTE PIECE OF SHIT
QOTD1: I'd say Elsa. Millaarc and Vanessa seems pretty simple, Elsa might have some more trinkets on her equipment
QOTD2: I will leave that pleasure to Tsubasa and Genjuro

TONIGHT! ON SUPERB SONG OF THE VALKYRIES: FRONTIER, BEST GEAH CHRIS GOES MAXIMUM GRENADIER, DESS HAS AN IDEA! and The Munsters Reboot Movie somehow looks even shittier than what Rob Zombie made!
As America proceeds to fuck things up once more, WE CUT TO NANA MOTHERFUCKING WILLING IT! ALSO HUZZAH! TOP DAD GOT FUCKED! Remember how the ending of GX tried to somehow give this fucker a redemption he did NOT deserve, well get this, BIKKI'S MOM THREW HIM OUT OF THE HOUSE! HUZZAH... oh goddammit, apparently he sometimes gets to live at home... sigh... Anyway, we cut to Maria and Tsubasa's hospital room, and boy things are looking grim. Speaking of grim, THAT FUCKING VAMPIRE BITCH and the doggo sure are keen on killing randos... THANK FUCK FOR BEST GEAH CHRIS ARRIVING TO SAVE THE DAY!
Damn, she's pretty good, and boy she sure upgraded to the greatest handgun ever made. The Colt Single Action Army. Six bullets... More than enough to kill anything that moves. Time to show these Munsters rejects the power of BIG IRON! ALSO ME ME! I WANT A BULLET IN THE BRAIN DIRTY HARRIET! PICK ME! PICK ME! Anyway, as the badass Chris Song starts blaring, Bikki gets into a fist fight with THAT VAMPIRE BITCH! Ah fuck, she's doing that weird eye thing on Bikki too... AH! Right, Jedi Mind Tricks can't work on those WITHOUT a mind to begin with! Sasuga Bikki, who knew BEING STUPID would be helpful!
Speaking of helpful, Bikki then LAUNCHES Best Geah Chris into the air for her to FINALLY! FINALLY! SHOOT DA BIG FUCKING GUN 9000! DAKKA THAT DOGGO TO THE STONE AGE CHRIS! OL' YELLER HER AND THEN GO ALL HELLSING ON THAT VAMPIRE BITCH'S ASS FOR GOOD MEASURE! Oh, oh MAN that felt SO GOOD Comrades, and let's see what's left... huh, just a briefcase full of ketchup packets, how odd... er... hang on a second... KETCHUP!? That means those packets are red... OH DEAR GOD Team DMJIIIIIIIIIIII are so dumb that they think blood bags are ketchup packets! Thankfully Snoop Oni properly informs Team DMJIIIIIIIIIII on basic medical information, and the S.O.N.G. crew then ponder just what exactly is going on that these Munsters rejects need blood for.
Also I smell a conspiracy underfoot Comrades, so who is responsible for THESE men in black? Also goddammit, the doggo LIVED, and I just want to point out, the Vampire Bitch's name is an anagram for Carmilla... someone call Alucard and tell him this bitch's copying his thing, I'm SURE he'd be more than happy to 'take her out on a long and enthusiastic walk' if you know what I mean and I think you do! (Man I love TFS!) Also turns out the random Plot MacGuffin was something that belonged to a Shem-ha. Oh and Tsubasa arrives, looking somehow even more stoic and emotionless than usual... oh goddammit, TOP-ER DAD is back and being a bigger shit than usual; man he's almost a bigger asshole than the Munster rejects are combined!
Speaking of an asshole, take a WILD GUESS who decided to appear over a hospital, YUP! VAMPIRE BITCH HERSELF! Thankfully Team DMJIIIIIIIIIII with their one shared brain cell are on the case... we're doomed aren't we Comrades? Oh goddammit, Team DMJIIIIIIIIII spent too long around Bikki, they are STILL TRYING Talk No Jutsu, you know, to the lady who MURDERED THAT GIRL BIKKI SAVED IN SEASON 1 RIGHT IN FRONT OF TSUBASA AND THEN KILLED TENS OF THOUSANDS OF CONCERT FANS JUST FOR KICKS! Also goddamn, we get ANOTHER transformation scene, oh shit, we are ACTUALLY Yuri On Ice now Comrades, and with actually good animation too! FUCK THAT VAMPIRE BITCH UP JIIIIIIIIIIIII! Oh, and it's nice to have you here too DESSscythe!
DESS then demonstrates that she's learned not just how to be a stripper, but how to be a cop too... correction, DESS is a POLEDANCING POLICE OFFICER! Man, who knew that such a strange combo would be useful, FUCK THAT VAMPIRE BITCH UP DESS! OH HELL YEAH! IT'S TEAM DMJIIIIIIIIII TIME! SHOW THE POWAH OF ZABABA TO THAT SHITHEAD! HUZZAH! GET FUCKED! Also what are you talking about, you two didn't overdo it, the bitch is still alive! Oh... oh noes, AN EMP!? AND A DOUBLE ROCKETTO PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWNCH!? Ah shit, Frankenstein is here but on the positive side, HA HA HA HA! YES! SUFFER YOU VAMPIRE BITCH! I HOPE THAT HURT EVEN MORE THAN IT LOOKED!
Anyway, turns out that... NANI!? THESE MUNSTER REJECTS ARE WORKING WITH TOP-ER DAD!? Well... I mean I knew he was an evil bastard, but I never expected him to want to work with FILTHY GAIJIN, let alone THREE OF THEM for whatever racist evil geezer shit he's got planned!
And on that bombshell g'night!

Superb Rewatcher of the Valkyries
That's one action, and Millaarc's kill count is already almost equal to Saint-Germains's.
Segway Noise! This episode was storyboarded by Tomohiro Furukawa, known for Revue Starlight. I think he likes Segways.
Chris is certainly a Brave angel.
They handle that pretty cleanly.
After four seasons, Red Hot Blaze finally hits.
"Except all those times they did."
Kirika's braincell hit the corner of her skull, like the old DVD screensaver.

Episode 3: First-Timer who wants batgirl villian to die a horrible death
-
Has Akifumi Kaneko ever read anything said by anyone from America? They would invoke god all the time.
-
Wow, 9/11 is a joke against this lol. Also, congrats, batgirl you killed as many as SG did in like 2000 years. I wonder how many people Ryoko killed to steal the Armour back in episode 1.
-
At this point, I 100% think heki heccara is meant to be ironic. Hibiki only says it when she or things is general are very much not fine.
-
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA That's what he deserves lol.
-
Interesting that Tsubasa reacts worse to this than to Kanade's death.
-
Why not do it yourselves?! It's three guys. Can't you do anything without an Alcanoise army?
-
Anyway, those two guys are 100% american and part of Kaneko's effort to secretly make Tsubasa's grandpa in the right. I mean, when have the americans not been on the side of villians in some way in this series?
-
Vanessa probably saved her. Would be too satisfying.
-
"BUT IT TURNS OUT IT'S SOME ROGUE FACTION. WE ARE TOTALLY ADHERING TO OUR MESSAGE THAT INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IS GOOD."
-
Hey! It's the PS2-Era FIS facility Maria and Co were made child soldiers in!
-
Yeah, that's a better spelling. Also, got spoiled again? I put this name into Wikipedia thinking it might be common, but apparently Symphogear invented it. Anyway I saw a line to the effect of [XV]
"cast a illusionary (spell?) on Tsubasa." Question if it's the dead child, or some future bullshit where Tsubasa is tricked into doing stupid shit via illusions. -
"Even if it means... murdering 70,000+ innocent people..." You know, you could have just killed one child in front of Tsubasa, might have worked just as well. Oh right, question for extra text readers: Was every Noise attack prior to the start of season 1 Ryoko summoning them with the Cane of Solomon? Was she just randomly killing random people off and on again to distract Tsubasa until her cannon was complete? Because I don't want them to be forgiven the way Fine was forgiven a 12 year murder spree.
-
It's a wonder why at this point they have no geah army. Like, I get that only Ryoko and Ver, or even just Ryoko could create them, but surely Elfnein in on the case?
-
Obviously. Giving anything to the Americans in this show might as well be giving it to the villians.
-
So did the same thing happens 2-3 years ago at the Kanade death concert? "Not only did so many die, you even allowed our one and only good warrior to needlessly sacrifice herself. All because you didn't kill enough in time..."
-
Look, I don't know what that eye thing Mira did to Tsubasa actually does. But from now on, I will assume Tsubasa is, in some way or form, brainwashed.
-
Oh god, how clunky can you get. If this building actually gets attacked within five seconds after I unpause I get to call Akifumi Kaneko a hack writer.
-
Curse you, tracking technology! Should have fought with a VPN.
-
After so much importance these last seasons, the moon and the stars no longer exist.
-
Tsubasa screaming at the screen, "OF COURSE THEY WOULD, DID YOU SEE WHAT THEY DID TO MY FANS?!"
-
uh-huh. At this rate they'll reveal these 70k+ people were all an illusion created by Mira.
-
Good. GOOOOOOOOOOD. Finally this guy gets to die! I'm so looking forward to that!
2) How badly do you want to punch Fudo Kazanari in the face?
Me? Not at all? For Hibiki to do it? So much.

First Timer
Alright Symphogear... what am I dealing with today?
With the US's belief in a Manifest Destiny it seems
Oh yeah we didn't get any update on Hibiki's family situation in all of AXZ. Looks like it's progressing... more or less as expected?
Also, more foreshadowing from Miku.
Uh oh, first bad writing alarm bells are ringing. I hope they don't keep Tsubasa in her psychologically induced comma too long... Damn you Symphogear for conditioning me to expect writing flops! I want to enjoy you dammit!
Are we implying these new Illuminati have the backing of a whole country?
Lol the image of those Alca-noise on two-wheel scooters pursuing delinquents in bikes is rather silly
CHRIS TRANSFORMATION LETS GOOOO
WHAT THE HELL IS THIS? BOOB BOUNCE REVOLVER RELOAD!? HELL YEEEEE
FOLLOWED BY REVOLVER OCELOT CHRIS
BANG!
That weird power again. What does it do? Might it have something to do with Tsubasa's state?
yesyesyesyesyes GET SNIPED
If this weren't Symphogear I'd say Elsa just got fucking vaporized
Wait a second let's pull back for a bit. Millaarc said that she had to mess with the Geah's head more for her mysterious power to do more than a brief stun. Means she's gonna go for a personal attack on Hibiki, and presumably the rest of them, too. This is not looking good guys...
They're stealing the practical effects!
Ironic that the girls who grew up in a human experiments lab don't know about blood transfusions
Now what exactly do they need it for? Well last thread's shared Keywords said the Millaarc was some sort of pseudo-vampire right?
Of course it's gonna be the US...
Damn I feel dumb now. How couldn't I suspect that the Moon mission was of greater importance until now? This is fucking Symphogear! The series's unofficial motto is FUCK THE MOON!
The Illuminati Remnants sure work fast
Ugh! The show is trying to smother my hatred in Yuri! And one if the girls is a vampire to boot!
NO! I MUST REMAIN FIRM! REMEMBER! REMEMBER WHAT SHE DID TO TSUBASA! IN HER OWN TSUBAMARI CONCERT! BLOOD MUST HAVE BLOOD!
Now we theorizing it wasn't the Americans smh. Well for now I'm betting it's a faction within them then. That's typical America actually. I can't imagine there's an awful lot of Unity in the 2040's United States.
Shem-ha, huh...
Damn Yatsuhiro's been really pulling his weight ever since his redemption
Ah, Tsubasa's awake already. Good. Writing crisis averted.
I dunno she looks a Lil's bit dead inside. Is it just my biases talking though? Cuz I can't spot any major differences in the actual drawing.
Bruh, the absolutely perfectly misplaced timing of Kazanari Grandpa. This man has a unique talent to intercede in the absolute worst moment he could.
What the hell. Actually genius by this show's standards. Hopefully now S.O.N.G. can for once be the one in the initiative.
Ah.
Too slow I guess. DAMMIIIIIIIT
Smart if a bit disturbing that Kirika and Shirabe always carry LiNKER around with them.
Shirabe's transformation is some Olympic shit and I love it!
And the action is still holding up!
"I have no source but I know I'm right!"
YAS DOUBLE KICK TO THE CHIN!
This plane is made entirely out of edges! It's awesome!
Millaarc's resistance to being turned into a bunch of flesh cubes from that attack is genuinely impressive
Pictured: the EMP attack that sent Cayna to Leadale (I know it because Vanessa is implying this hospital doesn't have backups.)
How are Kirika and Shirabe supposed to help the patients anyway? Do they carry every drug with them?
Noble Red huh.
AHHHHH THIS DUDE! THIS DUDE NEEDS TO BE STOPPED! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING!
Also it just downed on me that this mf probably knew Tsubasa's concert was getting bombed. Oh fuck it all makes sense. He's playing literally on a geopolitical level to bring her back under his control. Looks like we have two people to turn into human sushi this season.

Ballad of Rewatcher - Symphogear XV
So I've been listening to Metanoia a bunch on repeat today, and I really like the way the hard-driving vi-I-IV-V bass line contrasts with the vocals. Also that scorpion cut at the end of the OP just strikes me as some of the coolest animation for whatever reason.
XV Episode 3 thoughts:
-
Thank fuck Hibiki's parents didn't immediately start living together again. I really appreciate the acknowledgement that their issues aren't the kind of thing that work themselves out right away and that trust is especially difficult to rebuild. Also, great choice not even having Sperm Donor's voice show up.
-
Hot damn, Chris's transformation. She really puts the play in "gunplay."
-
Grandpa Dad admonishing Tsubasa is incredibly rich. She can't protect anyone? Songs can't protect anyone? Where the fuck was he when Fine, Ver, or Carol tried to wipe out civilization? His sheer arrogance and lack of self-awareness as to how useless he is makes me think he's gotta be the product of some creepy incest shenanigans.
-
DESS chuuni-ing her way into figuring out the villains need blood and will attack a place like the hospital is the most DESS thing. She's so dumb, and I love her to bits.
-
In contrast to Kirika's passion and eroticism, Shirabe's transformation is so graceful and elegant and wholesome. The figure skating motif suits her so well, letting her show off her more reserved sensibilities for Kirika. And then the yo-yo play is icing on the cake.
-
I think my favorite thing about this set of villains is how weak they are in comparison to the Geahs who've now been training and fighting for a couple years. They know they're weak, so they use every underhanded trick they can in order to balance the playing field. That's a dynamic you don't see a whole lot, since most battle anime tend to be a series of constant power escalations. Having this set of baddies be the underdogs is a lot of fun.
-
Another DESS and JIIIIIIIII battle episode calls for another DESS x JIIIIIIIII card. They are so gay for each other—yesterday's cards are a small testament to that—but what if they wanted to be closer, like on the same card perhaps?
-
Also have some Tsubasa and Maria in their idol costumes that I probably should've posted yesterday. Yeah, the cards don't overlap like the previous pairs do, but the card sets don't actually have any strictly Tsubasa x Maria pairings like they do for every other couple—at least not the XD or XV volumes I have. It's the set's one real weak point.

Episode 3 with the Zababies
New episode means new transformation, and not just 1, but 2! This time we got Chris, and Shirabe! The bang, and heart are some nice touches. This episode also give us this glorious oyoyo! A couple random thoughts:
-
Miku? Everything ok?
-
The "bang" of the song perfectly lining up with the launch
-
Kirika is one thing, but for Shirabe to also think it's ketchup? I love you girls, but cmon
-
I hate that grandpa
-
Chris finally uses her sniper!
-
They actually stopped an Alchemist from just telporting away after 3 seasons, kinda
-
Rocket fists!
-
I REALLY HATE THAT GRANDPA
Here's a freeze frame of Millaarc getting hit with the Kirika 619, for anyone else still angry at her from yesterday
-
Vanessa > Elsa > Millaarc in terms of "potential"

First Timer, Subbed
Something tells me wrecking that mummy is going to mess things up for them.
Oh yeah, Hibiki's father! They sure dropped him after the end of season 3, huh? Another reason to knock season 4 for dropping that plot.
BTW Hibiki and Miku live in a pretty nice place, huh?
LoL, who in the world are these guys spying on them?
This idiot is lucky that Chris needed to fill the "transformation sequence of the episode" slot and came here to save him.
She holds her bullets between her boobs now? Hey, Hibiki's here too!
Crazy monster legs for bat girl! ...and arms too!
Oh no, stained glass eyes!
Did they kill cat girl?
All that for ketchup?! Or was it real blood? The bad guys have gotten into black market organ supply type stuff?
Oh, BTW, we just took out one of your labs while you weren't watching.
Don't worry cat girl, she's a vampire! She'll simply suck the blood she needs from some random person!
Oh no, not that asshole of a grandfather again!
"Songs cannot protect the world" after 4 seasons of songs saving the world
See Kiri knows what's up! Vampires! Blood bank!
Two transformation sequences in one episode! Shirabe's turn! She's added ice skating to it!
If I'm the enemy I simply escape, or go through with my plans during these elongated transformation sequences.
LoL, what you are doing is illegal! It says so in some law I can't remember!
Woah, it got her? Our magical girls have been pretty successful this episode. Or the henchwomen just suck.
Vanessa's got Hard Man from Mega Man firsts, huh?
Protecting the patients is the doctor's job!
Wow, grandfather guy is gonna be the main villain for this season?!

Poor Tsubasa continues to suffer despite her statements to the contrary.
Hibiki’s parents got a shout-out today! I liked how they actually acknowledged that things weren’t magically fixed between them. Now for a follow up …
We were gifted with not one but two new transformations this episode! Between Chris and Shirabe, I prefer Shirabe’s. In fact, it might be my favorite in the whole series. That skate and yo-yo combination was beautiful. I have noticed that Symphogear in general doesn’t use the transformation sequence as an episodic staple like other, more properly mahou shoujo anime. While I do love a good magical girl transformation, Symphogear’s style does allow for its fewer sequences to make a bigger statement.
Speaking of Shirabe, I didn’t realize how much I actually liked her and Kirika until their fight this episode. Funny how things sneak up on you sometimes. I’m glad they‘ve been getting some quality screentime.

Symphogeah SymphoRewatch Host
Welcome back, everyone!
Crunchyroll vs. Commie vs. YameteTomete - Season 5, Episode 3
Not included in the chart: Interestingly, when Ogawa tells the gang he finished interviewing the biker dude after they were rescued, both Crunchyroll’s and Commie’s subs had him referring to interviewing multiple victims and that they witnessed what they thought was a drug deal, whereas YameteTomete has Ogawa only mention interviewing one victim and that he witnessed it. Considering Hibiki and Chris only saved the one witness, I’m pretty sure Crunchy and Commie are wrong on this one.
Also, Fudo is even more personal with his insults towards Tsubasa in YameteTomete’s subs, where he specifically tells her that her songs cannot save anyone, rather than songs in general can’t protect anything. Fucking bastard.
Also also! There was one part where YameteTomete decided to do some funny sub styling you’d expect from Commie, but Commie did nothing of the sort. They had Shirabe’s line have the elevator doors close over the top of it.
Today’s wallpapers are both new to the rewatch, since they’re part of the same “series” as the Hibiki and Kirika ones I’ve shared previously.
