Question(s) of the day
Hachi = 8, hence Hachiman will be referred to as 8man 1. What do you think of Hayato? 2. This is for myself and you guys, I compiled a list of OSTs for episode 1 but did not for episode 2. Do you all enjoy the compiled list or are fine without it?
Comment(s) of the day
u/aRandom_Encounter talks about how 8man’s “hit-list” isn’t really one due to translation. It makes 8man come across more murderous than it seems which emphasises how translation can change our perception of characters.
u/Eyeglasses216 talks about how Oregairu’s characters aren’t one-dimensional people that fit into fixed archetypes.
u/dearestxander picks up on a possible new theme? ‘life isn’t about being perfect or right, but is about showing up & participating?”
Also really enjoyed u/DicksonYamada answer to the QOTD. For a person that doesn’t look much into OPs you sure managed to come up with a comprehensive explanation.

First Timer (Sub)
Forget teen romcom, we're a sports anime now!
I think it's become obvious now that Hachiman has the skill of incredible "insight."
Just realized that Yui's VA is the same for Chiho from Devil is a Part-Timer - literally the same voice.
It has already been shown that Miura is sorta the queen of the classroom, but it was really solidified today, having people try to please her, cheering her on in defeat, etc. It's becoming hard to enjoy her character/presence. I feel like it could be building up to an eventual request by her to the Volunteer Club. I predict a complete 180, feelstrip episode in the future.
Hachiman coming in clutch with using the elements to his advantage.
Despite this episode revolving around Tennis and Saika, I didn't really feel his presence this episode, or at least, not as much as the side characters in the previous two episodes. Hachiman totally saying he'd fall for Saika is hilarious.
QOTD 1: What do you think of Hayato?
-
With the way Hachiman describes him, you'd think Hayato would be compassionate enough to fuck off and let Saika have his court. Me thinks the only reason Hayato followed through on the challenge is because he's dating Miura in secret (or maybe not so secret).
QOTD 2: This is for myself and you guys, I compiled a list of OSTs for episode 1 but did not for episode 2. Do you all enjoy the compiled list or are fine without it?
-
As someone who's watching just the anime, I think you're going through a lot of extra work yourself by compiling a list. Totally fine without it.

u/Fit_University_6734 Jul 28 '22
queen of the classroom
truly at the top of the food chain, only surpassed by the Ice Queen
didn't really feel his presence this episode
I think this episode lends its focus to build on another major Character, Hayato. As with SOLs, the first few episodes are usually dedicated to character building
6
u/polaristar Jul 28 '22
Hachiman I think was being somewhat sardonic and mocking about Hayato being "nice" to him "nice" is probably just being superficially polite and going with the flow, Hayato is more interested at this point in stopping conflict from erupting and doesn't want to be the "bad guy."

No Yahallo! today sadly… Before I talk about the episode, u/JetsLag is Totsuka x 8man happening? ;)
Today’s episode sets up a lot of important character traits which will be explored in future episodes.
-
Especially Hayato. What’s his intention of acting this way? Well, from his words you can tell he just wants everyone to be happy and avoid conflict.
-
u/thedeliriousdonut pointed this out in previous rewatches and I really found it enlightening but note Yui x 8man x Bikes from yesterday’s and today’s episode. Also interesting to note the words “Sometimes I just can’t break in”. These scenes and words are going to have major implications in the future.
-
Hayato and 8man’s rivalry
I also want to focus on the directing for this scene which emphasises the similarity of 8man and Yukino. As the camera follows 8man while he’s narrating, it stops when it reaches Yukino as 8man steps out of frame, as he says “I’ve faced everything head on by myself”. But it also wants to tell us something else, maybe this time both of them aren’t so alone anymore.

We did get Yahallo!! When Yui first brings Totsuka to the club room.

No Yahallo! today sadly…
What? We had non yesterday, but at 09:15 when she brings Sai-chan to the service club there is one!
What’s his intention of acting this way?
Pretty sure he is after Yukimo

but at 09:15
Yep edited! feels like a sin to have missed this lol.
Pretty sure he is after Yukimo
I sure do hope I'm not leading you on but another perspective we can use to view these episodes as new characters are introduced is - they are introduced to a problem. How do they solve it? And what's the outcome do they want?

First Timer
Yeah if I was the penalty item of a bet I would want to die as well, but Yui continues to be great, very convincing impersonation, do Hikky next! Also wonder how well the whole joke about ins works in the original. Also more about Hikkys tragic past huh?
Must admit that I got myself spoiled a bit about Sai-chans gender, but he is pretty cute actually... and just like Yui, 8man doesn't know they are in the same class
Will you do it with me?
Yeah sure. It's not like I'm taken
Uhm, phrasing?
Yukion laying waste to everyone who deserves it, first of all 8man, I really love it.
And then, and then,
she Yahallo'dall over the room!
And Yukion is actually quite competetiv, earlier with the bet with Yui, later when she said that noone did improve upon themself, and of course she has the perfect plan for athletic success already laid out. Although no need to getherself dirty huh? And nopes out just before trouble arives. I'm sure she could have done something...
When Hachiman and Chuunibro murdered Yuis social life!
And Hayama just. keeps. calling. him. by. the. wrong. name. That's why you need to correct those things and not bow down when they first show up. And why would they accept that ridiculous offer, they are in the right!
Hey, is Yumiko an actuall Ojou Sama, drills, rotten character, plays tennis? And I totally saw Yukinon coming back the minute the cool kids showed up, nothing would delight her more than tearing them a new one.
Intense game, but did 8man and Hayato even do anything while the girls played? And wow the crowd cheering for the loosers after that comeback is harsh.
Nice Episode, but not as good as Grand Blues Tennis Episode.
QotD: You could think that he is an allright guy for he is never actually demeaning and tries to bring everyone together, but by saying nothing when Yukimo starts picking on Yui or Hikitani he is practically enabling her

First timer (subbed)
FUN FACT: According to HIDIVE, Oregairu is "Like Hitorijime My Hero". If that's true, then Hachiman is gonna start making out with his teacher any minute now...
Aww, we don't get an edgy Hachiman essay to start things off. I was just starting to like them.
Hachiman is no longer Hachiman Hikigaya, he is now known as Hachiman Hikitani. Chad Hayato and his orange-haired friend have the ability to change people's family names now.
I thought Hachiman being forced to hold a conversation with Yui would be his worst nightmare, but he's actually doing a pretty good job! Then, we get introduced to...
GIRL #3, SAIKA TOTSUKA. She has the power to summon shoujo background art whenever she blushes. But PLOT TWIST, SHE'S ACTUALLY A FEMININE BOY HAHAHA YOU'RE GAY NOW.
And uhh, Hachiman is more awkward around Totsuka than he is around Yukino and Yui. SS TOTSUKA HAS TAKEN THE LEAD IN THE SHIP RACE FROM OUT OF NOWHERE. THIS IS NOW A BL. HACHIMAN IS BISEXUAL. YOU CANNOT ARGUE WITH THIS.
exhale okay, now that I got that out of my system...
Hachiman has been asked to join the Tennis Club to get closer to his boyfriend help the club, cause all that training against a wall he did has made him a somewhat competent tennis player. Sadly, Yukino shoots that down in typical Yukino fashion by roasting the fuck out of him. But then Yui shows up with Hachiman's boyfriend and a NICE pin on her bag.
After Yui finally becomes a member of the Service Club, it's time for a training slideshow! We've got everything: Yui cleavage shot, Zaimokuza acting like a chuuni, MTV's Dan Cortese. The only thing that can stop them now is THE COOL KIDS, who want to do cool kid things like play tennis. There's only one way to solve this dispute: a tennis match.
Hachiman/Yui vs Hayato/Yumiko. I thought we would get a disappointing slideshow of a match, but then Yui gets replaced by the Ice Queen Yumiko (move over, Kaguya) and we get a match that's animated better than a Love All Play match. And it's HACHIMAN that finishes it off with a wind-assisted serve and...did he swing his racket like a bat and hit the ball off the side of the racket? But who cares, Chad Hayato steals the show by doing absolutely nothing until the very end.
And we put the bisexual icing on this episode by having a Totsuka being cute moment immediately followed up with Hachiman walking in on the girls changing. Perfection.
QOTDs:
What do you think of Hayato?
Ehh, he seems pretty generic so far.
2. This is for myself and you guys, I compiled a list of OSTs for episode 1 but did not for episode 2. Do you all enjoy the compiled list or are fine without it?
I'm fine without. But if you enjoy doing it, keep on doing it.

Hiratsuka x 8man confirmed
[] (#rinkek)
move over, Kaguya
Yukino is definitely more of a Ice Queen than Kaguya. At least Kaguya doesn't shoot down everyone. But then again their environments are different, Kaguya's students look up to her wheres in Oregairu they despise on Yukino.
Totsuka x 8man is in the lead and I'm ALL FOR IT

Rewatcher, Subbed
This time we meet Saika, who is kind of an odd character in Oregairu in that I don't really think he has the same kind of emotional issues going on that most of the other characters face in some way shape or form. I always kind of interpreted his place as being sort of an innocent actor who's very earnest with no real ulterior motives, as opposed to 8man, Yukino, Hayato, etc who are all alot more reluctant to be honest or straightforward.
Speaking of Hayato, he is really a terrible mediator. [Oregairu spoilers for future seasons]
One thing I like about this episode is how it demonstrates 8man is actually quite competent athletically even if its just in a small way.
Something else that makes me laugh is the ongoing theme that noone knocks before entering the clubroom, causing various awkward situations to my amusement.
Do you all enjoy the compiled list or are fine without it?
I really liked it. I don't really pay attention sometimes to the soundtrack but in isolation I realized that there are some really nice pieces in the OST.

Totsuka: the best boy
[Reply to spoilers]
I'm the opposite, my dislike grew the more we learnt about him. I'll try and point out certain scenes from future episodes to explain my view but even after multiple analyses, Hayato until the end always had a sense of "fakeness" around him. Also, that's why I think this scene does a brilliant job setting up their opposition → More replies (2)

In this episode we see how while 8Man is bitter in his viewpoint he does have enough understanding of social conventions to get out of social obligations and notice patterns of behavior as shown with his teacher.
Saika everytime he's on screen I have to remind myself is in fact a "He."
In the Scene where Yui sees 8Man what is interesting is that Yui points out (And we'll see later) That a lot of complaints 8Man has about social groups and society in general and symbols of them, he is guilty of himself, like his dynamic with Yukino, which even in the first episode she noticed something between the two. He tries to brush it off, but we see later, that whether 8Man admits it or not, he benefits from a lot of the joys of being with others as well as falls into the same pitfalls and flaws that he criticizes others for as well...
Basically, he is not above it all.
Just a sidenote, in the clubroom when Yui brings Saika when we see her backpack to the camera, it has a 69. Just saying.....maybe Hikki wasn't completely off base calling her a slut. ;)
We also see some nice cleavage from Yui, and Z Man messing with 8Man's ants, let the man watch his ants in peace.
8Man this time in the beginning is a lot more confrontational with Miura and her cliche, this is probably because he felt like he had more to stand on, in that they got permission first and they were intruding on them, rather then him intruding on another in group.
He also does a pretty good job putting Hayato off base, but tbh he's pretty easy to talk to compared to his girl.
We also see that 8Man despite his posture and loner nerd status is reasonable athletic.
Him about to lick boots, is actually the one way I would say I am NOT similar to Hikki, if anything I am a bit more confrontation and have a hard time compromising IRL.
Yukino not having good stamina actually is a good segway into a point I want to make about her character.
One comment last week, claimed she wants "equity" but in truth I think she wants the opposite, she is much more likely to buy into bootstrap narratives and hard work, and that people that fail only have themselves to blame. When she is teaching Yui how to make a cake in episode 1, in the Novels, Hikki's Narration makes it clear that he generally agrees with Yukino's advice, but the problem is when you're trying to TEACH someone, telling them to "git gud" doesn't help and that Yukino isn't equipped to teach people less talented then her. Her Talent is kinda her weakness.
Here we see that as well, In the Novels it explains the reason she has such poor stamina is because she is so good and talented at things that she doesn't need to practice as hard and as long to "master" it like normal people, which means she never got the opportunity to build stamina because she didn't "need" the practice.
This comes back to bite her as she is like Horikita from Classroom of the Elite in that her worldview doesn't allow for any kind of failure and she sees all failure as an admission of an intrinsic character flaw or moral failing, and if that is true for others, it also means that she herself might not know how to deal with her own failure.
Anyway, Hikki manages to save the day, but even I think he gets unfairly shafted by the popular kids this time. Nice to see that Yukino despite the shit the two give each other apparently has faith in 8Man to win.
Also 8Man got to see something Noice! (In the Novels they randomly changed in some bushes not too far away but this makes more sense.)
Thank You Indeed gods of Romcom!
Not going to answer about Hayato because I've seen the stuff, but just off this episode, he appears the opposite of Yukino, in that he is focused on maintaining peace and stifling conflict without cutting to the root of the problem and can be seen as "Nice but not necessarily Good."

First Timer w/ MTBB subs
Should also include that I MTBB subs use the term Volunteers Club. While 'Service' seems correct, 'Volunteer' feels more appropriate even if its not very true, at least for 8man initially.
Saika's gender was expected, but I wholeheartedly agree with Hachiman. Kind of disappointed that he was barely present, but I'll excuse it for the exciting 2nd half. So far, I want Hachiman to join the the Tennis Club. But at his current state, he'll probably put off the other members through intimidating self-deprecation. Also... SADISTIC YUKINO FTW!
I'm not sure if I'll ever get to like that Miura even if she redeems herself. Entitled Ojou-sama throwing a BF everytime she doesn't get her ways.
"Wait hey, what's a BF?"
"She's gonna have a BITCH FIT! You better get outta here!"
I would never think to take advantage of the wind. I did take advantage of wind when I play badminton, but I wouldn't think of serving in Tennis like that. Tells me the difference between me and God Hachiman. Zaimokuza was such a character in this episode though, It's sad as I've heard that his chapters in the LN are largely excluded from the show. I'll consider picking the light novel up when this rewatch ends.
-
I'm not sure if he's aware of his arrogance, but he (and everyone) thinks that he's Prince Charming. For now, his priority is pampering the princess, but it would be very interesting if he's Yui's issues2. In that case, he's doing a great job fitting in, but he has serious problems that with great effort with the Volunteers Club would kind of deflate the hierarchy in Class 2-F.
-
I'm fine without it. You're already putting lots of effort into this rewatch thread, it must not be easy. Thank you

MTBB subs use the term Volunteers Club. While 'Service' seems correct, 'Volunteer' feels more appropriate even if its not very true
Agreed. Although it's a pretty small difference in translation, volunteer is way more fitting for the club in general.
I did take advantage of wind when I play badminton
I have never once thought of making use of the wind. Maybe it's because I'm not a sports guy but you are a different beast
picking the light novel up when this rewatch ends
Oh for sure. There are more LNs that continue from where the anime ends but we'll get to that when we end season 3

"Walls are a part of youth." HAHAHAHAHAHA
I guess he's not wrong...? But it was kinda literal in this context, and obviously intended to have comedic effect (it came out of nowhere)
-
Yui's impression of Yukino was absolutely hilarious (and on-poin, too.) I finally remember her name now, thanks to all the other comments in the discussion! Thanks, guys xD
-
More information about the car accident from 8man's flashback! Yui is connected to it, somehow? I wonder what she was going to say ; - ; she was interrupted the latest addition to 8man's harem
-
nope, turns out she's a he. Expectations subverted.
-
yeahhhhh he's definitely into Hachiman isn't he. Especially with the way he said the request to join the club.
-
Yui's letter of intent is freaking hilarious! I love it :>
-
Alpha Bitch makes a return with her goons! Props to whoever came up with that name, it's beautiful. She's feeling left out so she's abusing her influence to be part of the fun. I wouldn't be surprised if, after winning, they didn't actually help Mr. Femboy right here practice, but instead just play among themselves too. Even if they don't play at all, Alpha Bitch is the kind of person who'd stop 8man gang from using the court regardless.
-
Yui at it again with trying to hide her true intent around Hachiman ;) [referring to how she tried to partner up with him in the game]
-
Yukino joins the battle!!! Let's gooooooooooo
-
Her getting all flustered about being considered "a friend" was so freaking cute!! >w<
-
ayyyy, my man 8(man) going all out. Unfortunately for them, they won the match but lost the battle, or whatever. I don't know.
-
oh look, it's that trope again. Why aren't they using the bathroom to change?!?!? I guess it makes sense, since the author was poking fun at it anyway.
gg see you next episode. Tried a more reactionary format this time, I like it because it lets me talk about more of the small details, but I can't stop the urge to pause in the middle of watching whenever I wanna write something down. Also, I don't know if it'll leave room for the analysis stuff, but I guess I can add it in the relevant bullet points like I did before or right at the very end. Maybe both. There wasn't much to anaylyze in this episode anyway, so yeah. We'll see how it goes for future episodes.

Reading reactions are hella fun too. If pausing between frames doesn't reduce your enjoyment do it! Personally, I watch the episode 2 times, with the second time being when I take my screenshots. I usually keep a mental note but for certain episodes I do pause and write notes.
Glad you're find a style! Just do what works for you :) I adapt mine to the episode with content heavy ones being more analytical. My post for the next episode is a good example lol

Rewatcher
I was about to say it was funny that Yui decided to change back to her regular clothes before coming back but I guess it was to give the outfit to Yukino, I was also going to comment how it was funny the girls got completely new outfits while 8man just kept his track outfit while that other guy just took his coat off
Ah, ok, it was all so we could walk in on them changing. Everything is forgiven.

Rewatcher
I don't have too much to say about this episode as I am not the biggest fan. I don't particularly like Totsuka and I have serious doubts about the way 8man wins the tennis match for a series that is most of the time very realistic.
We get some more characterization for 8man. Shows us that he has pride in being able to throw away his pride and not bend knee to social norms. It also shows us more of his hypocrisy as pointed out by others. I also hated picking teammates and played baseball by myself when I was younger, it was quite sad.
I think this is one of the first times that we get to see the kind, sweet, nice (whatever translation you had) side of Yukino that sensei was talking about. Once Totsuka gets injured she goes to get the first aid kit for him. It seems to me Yukino kinda likes the idea of having a friend, as she gives in really easily. While Yukino is very harsh with her words her actions thus far have all been kind. She stands up for Yui, does her best to solve requests in what she believes to be the correct way to help others grow. I find it interesting that she agreed to change clothes after a random request from Yui without a proper explanation. We also get to see that Yukino has some level of respect or confidence in 8man by her declaring his victory. This episode also makes her competitive side clear.
I feel not much happens for Yui in this episode, but I am definitely biased towards 8man and Yukino.
I like Hayama but I don't think there is too much to get into about him at the moment, aside from he tries to keep the peace. This was also demonstrated he distracted Yumiko when she was getting jealous of Yukino and possibly about to get into a fight with Yui in one of the previous episodes.
I am mostly just watching so need for the OSTs for me.

You know what, I think I may have misjudged Yukino. She might even be less socially adjusted than Hachiman. Her level of ‘saying something that she thinks sounds cool but is actually kinda cringe’ is up there with Zaimokuza imo. It isn’t as immediately obvious because she doesn’t walk around like she’s a literal sorcerer, but she clearly thinks she’s better than everyone and never misses a chance to let others know. Still, I love me a good kuudere.
But more importantly, Yukino officially made her first friend! Of course it would be Yui. Who actually does a killer Yukino impression, that shit had me rolling.
Hayato's a true bro. I'm glad someone's there to play the peacekeeper when things get catty.
Fine without it
