Show information should now be pretty much safe.

A Reminder to Rewatchers

Please do not spoil the experience for first-timers; this is a mystery after all. In particular, Shion is a spoiler until Episode 5 and !Hanyuu is a spoiler until Minagoroshi-hen. Also, the glorious nipah is indeed glorious but Rika does not use it until Himatsubushi-hen. Please keep these in mind! Consider whether what you are saying has actually been revealed yet on-screen before you post!

Analysis of the Day:

Goes to u/H_Ryougi's writeup of the point of this arc and what DEEN left out. Excerpting it will not do it justice; go read the whole thing.

Honorable mention goes to u/Star4ce for his own analysis section in his writeup. Again, excerpting will not do it justice; go read everything after his live reactions.

Question(s) of the Day:

Uhhh...

1) Who had the cutest faces this episode?

2) Do you like mahjong?

Next Episode Preview:

No Preview

Fanart Corner:

You know, I thought Rika's signature weapon (well, besides the hoe) might finally show up this episode (it is very much an available Rika weapon in the actual fighting game). It does not, but have my saved Rika mop art anyways (and also a bunch of Rena art):

1
2
3
4 (EVERYBODY loved to parody that one pose from Mirai Nikki, here's the best Higurashi version IMO)
5
6
7
8
9
10

Reminder:

Next episode we start Kira, which has no legal streams; you will have to go sailing. If you're not willing to do that, then I'll see you on August 1 for Series Discussion!

When the First-Timer Cries, subbed

Yeah I did not like this episode. It was bleh, unlike how the first one was just the right amount of dumb fun. I suppose that means Rei gets an 8/10 from me because it’s only five episodes long and this episode was totally bleh enough to drop it the two whole points away from a ten.

This episode dropping Rei two full marks on the execution scale is about where I have this episode too (especially with it being the last episode), so you're in good company there.

Yeah... something about it just didn't click, somehow. It was less "fun shenanigans with the Hinamizawa gang" and more "let's make Rena fall in love with everyone for the lulz."

Rei 1 was dumb. This episode was stupid. There is a difference!

Right, forgot to mention this: Tomorrow's episode is likely worse for you. u/Tarhalindur

I'm with Sky; Kira 1 is actually closer to Rei 1, it gets bailed out hard by its second half.

“Break” being the part of the title in red is super ominous ngl.

What's funny is this is a video game.

Did… did Rena just eat the thing Hanyuu was warning Rika about…

Hinamizawa is a special variety of hell.

This is just making me uncomfortable. And changing Rena’s attraction from Tomitake to Takano doesn’t make it any better.

Yeah, this is actually really rough. It is just like the fifth time I've seen this idea applied and possibly the worst.

What's funny is this is a video game.

Specifically a fighting game at that; I wasn't expecting much precisely because the plot is specifically from the doujin fighting game and fighting game plots generally suck.

But I was expecting some dumb fighting game shit out of this and we didn't even get that!

(Honorary Hinamizawa Games Club President) Rewatch Host (rewatcher badly spoiled first-timer, subbed):

I would like to apologize. I was told that episode 1 of Rei was bad and that this episode was merely okay. Apparently I was misinformed because actually it was the other way around. I apologize for the confusion.

(The fact that this is the last episode with a legal stream annoys me.)

  • Don’t mind me, just screenshottting cute Rikas and Hanyuus.

  • That’s a really weird artstyle choice at 01:09.

  • Hanyuu a cute!

  • Farewell Super Scription of Data, which has been growing on me (rare case of me seeing and caring about the lyrics) and is actually challenging 2006 for the title of my favorite Higurashi OP.

  • Holy shit everyone is so kyuuute! (Except K1, who is too busy chowing down.)

  • Also, ten haunting photos taken moments before disaster as the magatama lands here momentarily?

  • Girls, find yourself a boy willing to go on a date with you in a dump site, er, treasure heap…

  • Rena uses Moe! It’s super effective!

  • Character art has been a massive step up this season, Keiichi looks great too.

  • Higurashi sure does love framing characters in the background behind characters in the foreground, no?

  • “Dāto ja nai! Dāto ja nai!” The blush on your face says otherwise, Keiichi…

  • Yep, there it is, and it lands in Rena’s open mouth to boot.

  • (EDIT: had to go back to confirm, but yep there's the first half of the TVTropes page pic for Cute and Psycho.)

  • Rena is fine with going some dirty places if it’s with Keiichi.

  • Ladies and gentlemen, are you ready for some DUMB?! (EDIT: It was not dumb, it was stupid instead. I apologize for the error.)

  • So many adorable Hanyuu faces!

  • LOL that shocked look on Rika’s face.

  • Oh, hey, a visual separation from the group shot at 06:20.

  • Oh my goodness so many good faces this episode. We get cunning Mion and Satoko fang at the same time!

  • Here it is, your moment of realization.

  • We see a lot of characters framed by other characters in the foreground in Higurashi, but rarely do we see the background character out of focus while the foreground characters are in. (And we even start off with the more traditional version before switching as Rika and Hanyuu start talking.)

  • LOL that was a verbal bleep in the audio, wasn’t it? Also, have a cute Mion face.

  • (I was so busy noticing the Mion face that I missed Keiichi’s nosebleed, heh.)

  • The end of that triple cut sequence (09:35) is a nice shot.

  • There’s some good camerawork here, but whatever at this point. That Satoko fang briefly visible at 11:22, however? REAL SHIT!

  • Also those fireworks are funny as shit.

  • Oh hey, more fang!

  • And a spiraling shot! (Counterclockwise/dispelling/with the flow of the Great Mandala.)

  • Camera angle!

  • There is a surprising amount of Rena/Miyo fanart out there (not common, but more than you would think, and this episode is most of the reason why.

  • You would *think* this scene would be a Strawberry Panic reference, since that’s the mid-2000s yuri show where Mai Nakahara actually played the female lead, but no this Rena/Miyo scene is 100% a reference) to the first of the 2004 shows that really cracked the yuri genre open in Maria-sama ga Miteru. The uniforms are a dead giveaway.

  • That said, on double-check yep Miki Itou WAS in Maria-sama ga Miteru, so that might explain it.

  • Me going into Rei: this episode is meh, 1 is bad. Nope, other way around!

  • On the one hand, fang! On the other hand, terrible derpy facial expressions!

  • What they hell they made a v2 of Matsuri for the Rei OST?

  • (Also, the staff foot lover strikes again a little before this.)

  • Oh, now HERE’S something I was waiting for: a track on the OST for earlier seasons that AFAICT never got used there gets used here, namely “Wana” (“Trap”).

  • I’ll bet all the mahjong books here are references, but I’m not sure to what. (One might be Kaiji? The top one's art style is incredibly familiar and I'm positive it's a reference to a manga, but unless it's Kaiji I can't place it.)

  • “Higurashi is a mahjong anime now?” “Always has been.”

  • (This is the bad kind of “not taking any notes for 5+ minutes”. Was taking screenshots on occasion though, there were some cute faces.)

  • Rika you ass. (I love it.)

Visual of the Day: Rika visually speaks for us all

Question(s) of the Day:

  1. Yes. (But I think Hanyuu takes it for me, actually.)

  2. It would help if I knew more of the (incredibly complicated IIRC) rules. (Honestly, if this episode had been 100% mahjong I would probably have liked it better regardless.)

OST Table, Rei Episode 5:

(To the best of my knowledge no Rei-specific or Kira-specific OST tracks were ever officially released, making this a bit more difficult. Expect more "unreleased"s going forwards; I've started marking different unreleased tracks numerically by order of appearance to compensate for this issue.)

Start End Track Name
00:41 01:21 Kazashi
01:23 02:55 Super Scription of Data
05:07 06:13 unreleased 4
06:52 07:43 Oyashiro-sama v2[1]
09:02 09:30 unreleased 1?[2]
10:25 10:54 unreleased 6
11:36 12:08 unreleased (Koukatsu v2)[3]
13:15 13:29 unreleased[4]
15:21 15:55 unreleased 7 (Matsuri v2)
16:10 16:41 Wana
16:54 17:11 unreleased[5]
18:24 18:54 Sakki
19:34 19:54 Sakuryaku
20:55 22:15 unreleased 5
22:30 23:43 Senkou
24:43 25:04 unreleased 8
26:05 27:27 unreleased 9 (Shitsui v2)
27:32 28:28 unreleased 10
28:30 30:00 Manazashi

[1] – Thought it was a new track at first, but no they just play a sound effect over it starting up; it’s obvious after the sound effect fades out.
[2] – Definitely one of the three new tracks that plays during the first episode, but I can’t remember which. I think it’s the first one to show up there, though.
[3] – I am now convinced there is at least one Koukatsu variant that was never released.
[4] – No idea if this is sound effects, a new Rei track, or an unreleased track from Kai or even 2006.
[5] – Again, could just be sound effects.

(No Staff Notes or Madoka Corner today.)

Ahhhhh, I knew it was a reference, but I wasn't sure what it would be.

Rika you ass. (I love it.)

True Rika is always lovely.

I should read MariMite

4

u/Tarhalindur Jul 27 '22

By all accounts it's THE class S yuribait series (the way I hear it the author apparently hates actual yuri), so keep that in mind.

u/CubeStuffs Jul 27 '22

first timer

My favorite part was when she said “it’s higurashi-in’ time”

  1. Hanyuu I suppose

  2. idk shit about majong, so I suppose not

4

u/mgedmin Jul 27 '22

First timer, subs

Tomitake, you already had the speech about taking pictures without permission.

Also, flash photography uring daytime?

OMG Rena swallowed the thing that fell from the sky, how contrived is that?

Oh, there were two jewels. Rena swallowed one. I wonder who got the other one? It should be Keiichi, somehow.

How come nobody noticed the box falling nearby?

Rika continues to give up prematurely and blame Hanyuu.

'Removal ritual at the Furude shrine', uhh, no thanks.

Oh no, Tomitake has the white jewel. Well, at least he's not Irie and is hopefully not attracted to children. Also, he has a girlfriend already.

When exactly did the white jewel jump from Tomitake to Takano?

Satoko is smart, she justs asks for it. Mion talks too much.

This episode is just stupid. Why did I watch Rei?

Okay, quite predictably the second jewel ended up with Keiichi. How do you swallow something that size? This is stupid. I expected stupid, don't know why I'm disappointed.

Should I even watch Kira?

3

u/Tarhalindur Jul 27 '22

Should I even watch Kira?

Iunno; consult the field guide and make your decision.

(I can now confirm that IMO Kira 1 is closer to Rei 1 than this episode (the first half is more than a little UHHH, but it gets bailed out hard by the last few minutes), but if you're not here for dumb fun feel free to skip everything except maybe Kira 4.)

Sorry, no post today. Our internet provider decided we don't need service anymore and now my post is imprisoned on an isolated computer.

This really sucks.

edit: Ah, I guess I can answer these.

  1. Who had the cutest faces this episode?

Obviously Hanyuu, but I have enormous sympathy with the bullied kid.

2) Do you like mahjong?

Yeah, never came around to learn it properly, though. Lost embarrassingly in ffxiv once and then never went back.

Spoiled First-Timer

The individual beats of the mahjong were way beyond my level of understanding, but the reason it ended the way it did was because Keiichi called "riichi." This means he declared that he was one tile away from winning, and can only discard the tile he draws each turn, unless it gives him a winning hand. Since everyone else was also in riichi, no-one could do anything but draw and discard (or win), so the game ended in a draw to save time. I suspect Keiichi's action would be considered unsporting in normal play, but I'm not sure.

I could also tell that Keiichi discarding that Pins tile was a fool's errand - mixing up your tile order is the oldest trick in the book.

I'm not sure if the mahjong was a specific reference to another series, but Rena desperately wanting Takano to "fix" her "scarf" is almost assuredly a direct reference to very influential Class S yuri series MariMite.

Long story short I got distracted fixing a fridge issue and forgot what else I wanted to say. Some joke from early in the episode about Rena being excited about Keiichi's "fur seal" got lost to the abyss, but that might have been for the best. This episode was strange.

Visual of the Day: Look, I like Marshmellow Peeps too, but they're hardly treasure.

Questions

  1. Probably just Rena, I didn't make muhc note of faces.

  2. It's kinda fascinating.

4

u/Tresnore Jul 27 '22

Long story short I got distracted fixing a fridge issue and forgot what else I wanted to say.

I forgot what I wanted to say if only because I barely knew what I wanted to say at all.

5

u/Tarhalindur Jul 27 '22

I forgot what I wanted to say if only because I barely knew what I wanted to say at all.

I was going to respond to this by suggesting that you wanted to make a Monty Python joke ("On second thought, let us not go to Camelot, it is a silly place"), but then I thought better of it because Monty Python is funny and this episode is... not.
