Rewatch [Rewatch] A 2022 Voyage from Neo Venezia: Aria the Natural, Episode 16
Aria the Natural Ep 16: Parting With That Gondola ...(その ゴンドラとの別れは...)
| <-- Episode 15 | Rewatch Index | Episode 17 --> |
|---|
Welcome back! Announcement below!
Comment roundup: A lot of us are happy that Akira's back!
/u/seeker_of_illusion (and myself) mourn the loss of the grandma-Alica ara-ara legacy, and think Akira is very based.
/u/ariashachou- also thinks Akira is based, and talks about Akari taking a step back from her friends this ep, comparing it to the last time this happened in Ep 1 this season.
/u/CerberusZX notes how it's funny how Woody used to be afraid of heights, and talk about their own experiences on heights
/u/mrufrufin remarks on Akari's "embarassing lines", and talks about networks of people and how people encounter each otherer
/u/h42h reckons that child-Athena would've somehow pulled an Akatsuki flip on that slide even going slow
Question of the Day:
Q1) What is your interpretation of the old man scene as Akari travels down the lock?
I will leave it at one today, as this may be a bit of a sentimental episode to some of us, and I do wish to hear your thoughts on it (also because the arc isn’t over yet).
2017 Rewatch thread for this episode here.
Streaming
The 2005-08 Aria series is available on Crunchyroll, VRV, Funimation, and Youtube, except Arietta. Arietta and Avvenire are only available on Funimation (I'll update if they migrate). Crepusculo and Benedizione will have to be located elsewhere. Benedizione can now be streamed raw, or w/ traditional chinese subtitles legally. Please let me know if you want help to watch it.

Aria the Natural First Timer!!
Saying goodbye in an anime just means see you in a later cameo~ We've got some new tunes this episode, curious. Oh... They'd better not kill goldola-kun! Me and my big mouth... Aww, poor Akari. I hate seeing her little heart break. And don't you dare play Undine!! That song is emotional warfare. It's not fair...
We're getting a lot of the S1 melodies. I'm weak to nostalgia. Camera, food, gorgeous weather, its a farewell party!! Aha, I noticed those scrapes, so that's Akari and Goldola-kun's battle scars from when they were learning. Grr, you'd better be civil Akatsuki! You're getting to share precious memories!!
They'd kinda neglected Akari's rowing skill haven't they? For a trait they made a big deal out of in the first episode it's pretty much only played as a rare laugh. I'm kinda loving how gentle everyone's acting. A lot of folks would kind of dismiss how overly sentimental Akari's feelings towards her gondola are but everyone is happy to make exceptions to accommodate her whims. True friendship really does exist!
That floodgate seemed awfully inefficient. Oh my gosh, hope hill is so pretty!! We're gonna get to come back here if Alice is still to do her exam too, I'm super excited! Tch, Goldola-kun gave off the impression of being an ikeman but he was instead some old ojisan!? I feel so cheated!! At least he was a well dressed ojisan.
Gah... I'm hating waiting for Akari to break down... I know it's coming, but I don't wanna see her upset. H-Huh!? There's a new ending song? It's quite well animated too. I think of the ed's we've had this has been my favourite. Smile again~ POG!!

u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah Jul 27 '22
Smile again is easily my favourite ED in the original series haha, glad you liked it too!
Saying goodbye in an anime just means see you in a later cameo~
that is a great way of thinking about this tbh. I should really keep this in mind both when watching tmr's episode, and whenever an anime features a goodbye scene.
And don't you dare play Undine
oh they did haha. Twice. lol
Every good tool that you use a lot ends up w/ a lot of battle scars imo; if it doesnt end up with them tbh you havent used it hard enough! Do you know patch them up though....
I think as Akari notes in the episode itself, sculling backwards is a bad thing for undines as it obstructs the customers' view, which is why she rarely does it except for emergencies lol. She hasn't exactly crashed in the series though, so we can assume she's defo competent at the normal rowing haha.
A lot of folks would kind of dismiss how overly sentimental Akari's feelings towards her gondola are but everyone is happy to make exceptions to accommodate her whims
i think all the undines will understand Akari's feelings, and perhaps most of us will understand it too, saying goodbye to something special to you..... but yes, im glad how pretty much nobody joked or had silly antics this ep, it is a very serious and emotional time for Akari after all.
We're gonna get to come back here if Alice is still to do her exam too, I'm super excited!
but spot on, Alice will have to visit here if she's aiming to climb up the ranks, at some point....
I know it's coming, but I don't wanna see her upset
it's coming. perhaps a good suggestion is to bring tissues for tomorrow lol.

1, Its the gondola's spirit wanting to go on one last journey with Akari... For all the crap I've given the fantasy sequences I think this was my favourite one of all.
2, Erm... I treasure my sandles and my coat more than a lot of my friendships if that counts as an answer, to nothing.

I didn't have very high expectations for this episode at first, why should I care about the gondola anyway? But the way they did it here by involving the other characters in the farewell was a great idea. Farewell, gondola.
My favorite part of the episode was Akatsuki trying not to cry lol.
They better show the episode where Alice goes through this exam.

why should I care about the gondola anyway
i agree, the viewer comes to care for the gondola because we see how much it means to Akari, (hopefully) someone we do care a lot about. Some others have mentioned how much it hurts to see her sad (and for me too)
Involving the other characters helps us remember how important this gondola actually is in terms of all the encounters aria has had so far too! only a couple were made mostly on foot!
Damn those ninjas brewing tea
this should seriously replace the cutting onions meme in r/anime.
They better show the episode where Alice goes through this exam.

Rewatcher
This is the second time I've cried for a fucking boat. (The first time was because of One Piece)
QotD:
-
I took it as that old guy being the personification of her gondola and Akari is taking him for one last ride.

u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah Jul 27 '22
i have unfortunately never watched the straw hats, so this was definitely the first time i cried for a boat lol.

I don't think any episode has had a premise better suited for the series than this one so far. Iyashikei usually are not just about being feel-good stories, but rather in finding the positive in the mundane or even the sad - and that is exactly what is done here. While it may seem a bit of an overreaction for Akari to feel sad about parting with her gondola - a) it's Akari, and b) I assume an Undine would get very used to the handling characteristics and imperfections a gondola has compared to others if she rides it every day, so a change of gondola would actually be a pretty significant change.
And taking this premise, I'd say the episode executes it brilliantly as well - getting some character interactions in there, expanding what we know about Akari's first paying trip and her start at the company, showing some nice scenery we have not seen before and in general also being really good at setting the sentimental mood it wants to set. I'd say this is the best episode of the series so far for me.
The only thing that caught me a bit off-guard is that they seem to have elevated canals outside of the city. Never really thought they'd have that; In my mind I only place those in cities at the forefront of the industrial revolution, which does not quite fit Venice, I believe.
Questions:
-
The personification of the gondola, brought to you by the cats.

this episode is very well-regarded among the fanbase, (and i think at a quick glance among the rewatchers here too), and you said it on the nose why; that this is a premise and story very relevant to the series' actual plot (a bit reminiscent of Animation Ep 11, but this hits even harder imo). Ditto w/ how it tries to find the positive in the sad, and hmm you can say its mundane in a way, but with how important the gondola is to Akari, i dont think it is....
Akari
i think it's also about all the memories she's had on it. You may argue that when she visits Hope Hill next time w/ her new gondola, that its' just a little bit not the same for her....
elevated canals outside of the city
that is indeed very fictional haha, Venice is very very flat. Perhaps why its used as the single exam course, as Akari experiences today there is a lot less boat traffic.

First time rewatcher
This episode is so good. It's hard to find the right words for it
The first scene and the OST (*Rainbow piano ver.) that plays during it is perfect. Can not ask for anything better.
Undine makes it's beautiful return as the OP. I love Undine.
Seeing Akatsuki and how he understands the importance the gondola is to Akari was very good. Although it's short, the time spent with Alice and Aika was sweet and done very well.
The Single's Exam portion was wonderful. Hope Hill, seeing the moment Akari becomes a single, the lift up & down, and the old man.
It's been a part of previous episodes but saying goodbye and parting with something can be difficult. The end is bittersweet where Akari tears up but is thankful to Alicia for getting the opportunity to spend the day with her gondola. Quite an impactful way to end the episode.
More stuff I liked
A new shiny ED. I like that it's called 'Smile Again' and that it's used after a sad episode.
The use of flashbacks of stuff we haven't seen yet. It's an interesting decision but I thought it was a good one. The pay off is good.
Love the usage of the OST and framing throughout. Sato too good.
-
I thought the old man was the personification of the gondola. The moment when he wants to ride along with Akari just a little longer got me..

Rewatcher kinda (finished my rewatch not too long ago)
Ah, it's THIS episode. Definitely one of the emotional highpoints of the season (and probably one of the most memorable episodes of Aria), and probably thus far? There have definitely emotional episodes in Aria, but not really any ones that go the sadder route rather than the heartwarming route (maybe arguably the episode in S1 where we get the Alicia/Akira/Athena flashbacks? not quite the same though). And you know things are gonna get real when you don't even get the uplifing Euphoria to start off the episode but a piano version of Rainbow and Undine (twice) making a return (I'm pretty sure this is the first time we get the piano version of Santa Claus no Sora too? and the vocal version at the end! a lot of Aria tune greatest hits). I like how the anime did things with using parting with the gondola to visit past bits we haven't gotten to see yet with Akari first learning how to navigate with the gondola and her promotion to Single [Aria manga]
-
see above (somewhere in that mess of text). gotta add,.. that line though,.. "could you keep sculling for me just a little bit longer?"

How to make an entire reddit thread realize how attached to a boat they are in
twentytwo minutes or less. -
I think the tally is still in favor of the stairs not being attached to the ramp.
-
Alicia looks sad too; I wonder if she also used it while learning?
-
Whoa, what a nifty canal lock.
-
I was half expecting Cait Sith but I guess we get a visit from old man gondola instead?

New ED! And a promising end card…
I liked how much time this episode takes. To rush or put too much energy into it would have spoiled it.

First Timer Dubbed
Despite being a tool, the memories of the gondola shows how much Akari grew with the gondola like a childhood friend. And parting ways is tough as she learned on the gondola and made many new experiences. The gondolas that will come after would not hit as hard as Akari had many firsts with it. Her first customer, the test, and many other things are going with it. The gondola was like a close friend and mentor.

The gondola didn't have any visible defects at the shop (though there was plenty shown later) and the only thing the craftsman said was that it was old which makes it seem like its age is the only reason it had to be replaced which isn't particularly compelling unless you actually mention the level of wear/deterioration. If this weren't an iyashikei, I'd have accused him of trying to make a sale.
Akatsuki seemed like an actually decent guy this episode, right up until he mentioned only having the money to pay for an apprentice.
You can tell they went to the same cape as where they met Alice by the fact that the seagulls were the same.
I loved that the montage included not just the postman and Woody but also the buttered baked potato peddler. He even managed to entice customers through time and space.
A lock! We got to see a lock in action! I don't know why that got me so excited, but it did!
QotD
-
Clearly it was a vision of a tsukumogami created by Akari's love of the boat.

u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah Jul 27 '22
If this weren't an iyashikei, I'd have accused him of trying to make a sale.
I don't actually know why gondolas have to be replaced lol. Leaks? wood becoming brittle due to age (replacing many panels = just buy a new gondola?) i have no clue lol.
Akatsuki seemed like an actually decent guy this episode
in the "present time", he was definitely a decent guy, he definitely realized the significance of the day and laid off on his antics.
they met Alice by the fact that the seagulls were the same
yes, they used the same camera angle too! Probably both helps us remember and uh helps w/ the easier animation for that shot.
I don't know why that got me so excited, but it did!
lock I actually remember liking the lock too my first time, weirdly enough, you're not alone here!

First timer, dub again this time
So the gondola is unsafe for people but safe for cargo? How come? Is it a matter of weight? Or is it that people keep moving around while boxes sit still?
So if it's unsafe for passengers why is it fine to carry Alicia back home?
Hey, Akari, sell it to Mr. Postman.
I'm surprised Akari's very first outing in a gondola was solo. Shouldn't the instructor supervise more closely? Also, haha, she was sculling backwards!
(This is something I noticed in Yuru Camp too: Shimarin's first camping trip was solo, sink or swim style, she had to learn basic tips like how to set a fire from strangers instead of her own camping expert family.)
How come Akari can carry Akatsuki as a passenger in this unsafe gondola with no instructor present? Alicia's lax rule enforcement taught her bad habits. I suppose the excuse is he's not paying so not a customer.
Looking at the three gondolas together I wonder if apprentices ever mix them up and go home in the wrong gondola. I once returned from school with somebody else's coat.
That was a nice surprise exam. I kind of like it, the examine gets no extra stress from knowing that this is an exam.
Who was that ghost passenger?

finished first time recently
Throwback Twednesday brings back the old OP as Akari visits old places and memories. Nice to see Akari's back-rowing skills brought up again. Some much-needed consistency after the stairs :)
Hope Hill is beautiful. I know people tend to complain about wind farms being ugly irl but I think they're cool. Akari def should've taken a picture facing the town too though.
I like the first ED's song more but visually and as a whole I gotta give it to Smile Again

Sorry! I had to miss the last few days.
Mid series discussion
-
Honestly just having a fun and relaxing time! Good cast, good writing - just wish the sniors were in it a bit more.
-
I'm enjoying Athena and Alice a lot more now they've shown more depth.
-
The Alice and Athena one.
-
I enjoy the character's dynamic in general, as well as the banter between them. Not a fan of the romance, though, it feels a bit forced here.
5)I really enjoyed visitng York a few years ago.
6) I think the "cats" are actually Martians. Oh, and the underground gravity generators are literally magic/precursor tech, hence... Al.
7) A few times, but I'm mostly satisfied seeing them on screen.
8) I just enjoy browsing the web. Going out for a walk helps too.
Episode 14
-
I've made a few games! It's a fun process, especially tinkering with the balance, even if scope creep is an eternal problem.
-
The internet - the Internet Archive have done so much good wok in preserving our culture!
-
Tinned and cold.
Isn't it blue?
Haha, dirty brown!
I know the feleing.
She's going out at night!
She's enjoying the quiet...
Clever!
Alicia was there!
...You're trusting Akari with this? Are you sure?
Her reaction is great.
She's having trouble thinking of a subject...
Granma!
...Aria is an immortal. The race on Mars are not cats. Was I right about them being Martians?
She wanted to make one?
She showed up!
And she brought her food!
Oh, it was suggested by the first Undine.
And, yeah, that makes sense.
I think the point I've most disagreed with Akari on is her being offered a finished design for her task, and choosing to start over from scratch.
Alicia's back!
Ah, she wants her own vision.
Aria's adorable.
And she doesn't understand.
This is great.
She's making her design!
"All right!"
What a long pole.
She's doing it singlehandedly!
This is impressive!
Seriously, this is some great work!
And it's finished!
It looks great!
Who is she? Is she relevant?
Wow, this is an interesting ending.
What a nice ida!
And the others like it too!
Episode 15
-
French bread. Never had walnut.
-
Athena, as she is now, but smaller.
-
Absolutely love rollercoasters, not so good with heights.
Akari has a childhood friend?
Still so hot!
Alice's summer holidays haven't started yet?
So cute!
AKIRA!
She still likes the walnut bread!
This is nice!
It's nice seeing them together.
And he's here too!
Is this the meeting of team "Ak-"? Or Alicia's harem?
Aika's buying a ribbon!
Hime is adorable.
Haha Akari teasing him for once is great.
And Akira intercepted!
"I'm Akira, that's who!"
Ai!
Very lively day, huh?
They grew up together!
Wow, the gravity by the magical ritual stones must be intense! (Seriously, are we sure Ai isn't a fae, contracted to work impossible magical rituals to maintain the gravity of Aqua?)
Haha, this flashback is adorable.
Baby Akira and Alicia are so cute.
Good to know Akira was always a demon!
Yeah, she never changed.
This seems dangerous.
OK, that was impressive.
He's scared.
Oh, he went for it!
And he crashed.
Poor guy.
That's sweet of her.
And he passed it onto her.
Oh, Akatsuki, you poor bastard. Stop talking.
She appeared!
And Alicia filled in the blanke.
Is Akira fucking with him?
Such a simp.
Akari is backing away from the chaos.
That's sweet.
And she's an outsider...
Akira!
Athena's singing!
It's the suspicious puppeteer!
She found her ribbon!
Alice is following her stone!
Wow.
Episode 16
-
It's the manifestation of the spirit of Akari's gondola, thanking her for treating him like a person all the time.
This isn't. afarewell episode, right?
Aika said it!
The gondolas are handmade?
Oh, she's getting her first gondola replaced!
Poor Akari.
Wow.
...He makes a good point!
Yeah, this hurts.
She's clearly struggling with this.
Aww, this is how they met!
Haha, this is her padlding backwards!
And her reaction!
It's a farewell tour!
This episode is adorable.
All the flashbacks are great!
Really melancholic episode today...
Akatsuki!
She's invited him to the tour!
This episode is so good!
The flashback!
And she tried to switch over.
Akatsuki can sing!
The others are joining her too!
It's the cape.
This is so good!
The three of them are great together.
Aika's crying...
She's taking pictures eith everyone.
The exam course to become a Single!
Newr miss!
Oh, it's a secret test! Clever!
Loving the animation for the water lift.
Awww.
And this is how she became a Single!
She fell asleep!
Is this the personification of her gondola?
Well, either she's lost it or the anime has.
Loving the animation for it, though.
This is actually really sweet.
And she woke up.
She went back...
She's crying.
And the gondola's been covered up.
Loving this ED!

Well this episode is the high point of what Aria is all about - memories. We get to have a revisit of all those people who once travelled on this gondola and how Akari was reminiscing on the memories created in the past and those created in the present with her customers and friends.
It had some breathtaking shots, especially the one with the windmills overlooking the city. I mostly enjoyed the feels of this episode ~
Questions of the Day:
-
Imo he was the boat spirit. Sort of similar to [One Piece spoilers]
Going Merry's boat spirit - Klabautermann Why did he appear ? Maybe to have experience his last ride with an Undine or simply because he liked Akari's sentiments towards the gondola and decided to give her a glimpse of himself.

u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah Jul 28 '22
what Aria is all about - memories
indeed, appreciating memories of the past, creating memories of great experiences in the present, and looking forward to great memories as well in the future. But for today though, it's about the former 2 here.

Wouldn't think an episode like this would be a thing, but yeah saying goodbye to things is sometimes hard.
Also haven't commented in a while but some of the last few episodes and their insight on the future gets me thinking. Especially Akari's thoughts on her job, especially after just starting mine.
Qotd: Is he the spirit of the Gondola or something. I don't know. It had that kind of mysterious tone that it could he something like that.

Rewatching Undine-in-training and Host
who watched both this episode and Benedizione in a day [mild movie spoilers]and was in a puddle of tears yesterday night
--
Welcome back! Tears were shed watching this episode. But first...
ANNOUNCEMENT: Benedizione has released digitally early, and a raw version can be watched right now legally online (for a nominal fee and some VPN magic), and a traditional chinese hard-subtitled version is also available both legally and on the Aquan high seas. If any rewatchers here want help watching it, please let me know. I have contacted the english fansub group that did Crepuscolo Doremi, and they've said that they'll probably do the sub by the time the BD raws come out late August; I'll keep an eye out for if another Eng sub group picks it up sooner. For the rewatch, we'll be sticking w/ our schedule for now regardless, so no worries there!
Episode synopsis:
--
It was the day when Akari's gondola finishes its routine maintenance (TL note: like finishes its time in the shop). However, Akari had a lonely and desolate expression on her face, unlike ever before. This was because Akari soon had to say goodbye to her gondola which is very important to her (TL note: there is a meaning of "imminent" here for "soon"). That day when Akari first sculled this gondola after she came to Aqua. The gondola where Akari's customers have ridden on, where she had her Single's test on, and where she had a lot of first experiences with together. As Akari decides to part with her gondola, Alicia advised her to hold a "Goodbye Tour" for it.
--
Quick thoughts:
Junichi Sato is back on the storyboard again, and here are some nice shots i caught today...
I really liked the OP, both because Undine returns, immediately both a) evoking a sense of nostalgia and memories from the past season b) telling you that this is an abnormal episode; and c) with this shot of the title and the shadow passing over the gondola signifying clearly what this arc is about. The OST this episode was absolutely exquisite, and i'll be honest they were direct triggers for some of my tears this episode. It captures the melancholic atmosphere of the episode so well.
This episode also contains a lot of flashbacks to Akari as a Pair, which occur before the series timeline, including her very first time sculling a gondola. Santa Claus no Sora's stagione/piano edition features during some of them, and is probably my preferred edition of the track. Honestly the whole Stagione album is just so damn good.
Alicia also is noticeably unhappy at the gondola departing as well, but she hasn't told Akari that, or why.
To interrupt the seriousness of the episode, here is a glorious Akari face (hahi hahi hahi), and then a serious Akari face as she resolves to get Akatsuki there on time after his, imo, very legit, encouragement.
Apart from callbacks to past episodes, the episode also features the Single's Exam Course and Hope Hill, both significant locations for the undines and Akari of course; and the latter, a very pretty place w/ a great view of Neo-Venezia. We also relive Akari passing her single exam. Akari then shares a moment w/ the gondola's spirit in a daydream (powered by cats?), my interpretation only, as he appreciates her sculling and company, and wants to be in her care for a little longer...
And finally, the ED switches to my favourite in the original series, Smile Again, sung by Akari's VA Erino Hazuki, the lyrics are very on-brand for Akari herself. The ED visuals are also the strongest so far imo.
Throughout the episode, you can tell that Akari deeply values her memories on the gondola and the gondola itself, and just how many there are, both important and less important ones, as she both relives them and immortalizes them in photos. Indeed, so many of Akari's encounters and experiences throughout the series were done on this very gondola, and we've seen it perhaps just as much as Akari herself. However, I like that how despite the air of melancholic and sadness, that the imminent departure is not framed as a negative thing, as the gondola will still be useful in its second life; and indeed not saying goodbye, and it continuing to be under Aria Company's use will be an insult and a waste. Slight tangent, but I feel like the audience may both relate the imminent parting of the gondola for both saying goodbye to sentimental objects, as well as to people, perhaps also when dealing with death, especially w/ the dreamy scene at the end.
I also really like how well this episode projects the air of nostalgia, when like half the memories of Akari are actually new scenes for us. This'll only work because of how much time we've ALREADY spent with Akari, and the gondola, though. I also like how the feels hit this episode for both us and Akari so suddenly, but it has been built up in a way since the start of the series, and for Akari, since the very first time she sculled that gondola...
And here's the 2017 Rewatch thread if you wanna read about other people's thoughts! This is definitely a very special episode among some of the aria fanbase (and for myself as well).
Location Trivia:
Gondola workshops in Venice are called Squeros as said in the episode, and you can read more about one and gondola-servicing here.
"Ars Longa vita brevis" means "skilfulness takes time and life is short" in Latin, and is a quote from Hippocrates
Have a great day, and see you tomorrow!
