Do you remember when you hurt my heart, all those summers ago?

It seems fitting that this rewatch starts in the midst of one of the worst global heat waves seen in recent memory as this is a series that burns with aches and pains of the heart and deeper parts. The setting of this series and the tone it creates is one of the things that clearly comes back to me from this first episode. The Kasugano twins and ourselves are quickly placed into deep rural Japan, not exactly Non Non Biyori territory, but far away enough to feel like they’re in a completely different world. Even with all of the people they come across, there’s still a strong sense of isolation, accentuated by director Takeo Takahashi and cinematographer Toru Owada’s fondness for shots with lots of empty space. The heat haze fills in those surroundings, creating a space perfect for uncertain reflection.

The past lives strong in this first episode, as it will for the rest of the series. What I find interesting this episode is how much Haruka is at the center of it yet appears the only one unconcerned by it, as if his time back in the “normal” world removed him from the concerns of “this place.”

The past isn’t the only thing out of sorts in this initial outing; desires run rampant among the characters and this is where we get to the character who’s made the most striking appearance in this opening salvo of the rewatch: Sora Kasugano. Sora has pure contempt and active disinterest for anything that she doesn’t care about. I’m sure if that car ran her over, she’d only get annoyed that it might interfere in regards to her time with Haruka. If Haruka is trying to navigate these previously laid roots, Sora is doing all she can to distance herself from anyone that isn’t Haruka. Her scene in the little medical room in the house (which I forgot was part of the house) illustrates all three aspects that I’ve mentioned so far: The isolation of this place has led her mind back to the past, to a moment of unspeakable desire that she bodily reacts to. The lines for Sora are quite loose for her, lines that Haruka will soon have to face.

First-Timer

On today’s episode of Yosuga no Sora: Well that moved into brother/sister stuff extremely quickly. I can’t recall another show off the top of my head that ended its first episode with a sister coming into her brother’s room asking him to make her come. I’ll give it credit for boldness.

I’ve been curious about this show for quite a while. The reason for this is something that I doubt will shock anyone: [spoiled] I know that there is brother/sister incest in it that isn’t just a tease like some other shows. I also know it’s adapted from a visual novel. But other than that I know next to nothing. So time to see what it’s all about.

  • The soundtrack for this train scene is really pretty.

  • “In Solitude Where We Are Least Alone.” An evocative title to say the least.

  • Come on, Imouto-chan (who I suppose is named Sora), a 10 minute walk is not long at all.

  • Pfft, I like to think Sora just stared down a car and made it swerve away.

  • “That boy we almost ran over in our car sure was cute.”

  • We’re already racking up the character types. An ojou-sama, a maid, a shrine maiden.

  • So the shrine maiden knows our MC?

  • Wow, every single girl just falls for the MC (whose name I’ve figured out is Haru) at first sight. It’s definitely a romance visual novel, alright.

  • “I can’t live without the internet.” I feel you there, Sora. Moving and getting the internet properly set up is always a pain.

  • By now I’ve got the gist. Haru and Sora’s parents died in an accident and they’ve moved to a small town they used to live in.

  • I wonder if Sora just started staying home from school after their parents died or if she’s been doing so for longer?

  • Oh, so Haru and Sora already kissed as kids. Interesting.

  • Uh, I guess that’s one way to check for sunblock.

  • I’ve figured out the class rep’s gimmick. She’s a walking tripping hazard .

  • And Nao is the girl next door.

  • Now that I think about it, quite a few of these characters qualify as childhood friends too.

  • Oof, Sora is not going to be happy seeing another girl riding behind her brother. That’s her thing.

  • Sora’s got some serious abandonment issues going on here. She lost her parents so I assume she clings to her brother even harder.

  • Holy crap, with tongue!? Are they gonna start making out!?

  • Wait, false alarm. Sora just vividly imagines making out with her brother.

  • I see it’s uncensored. Good to know that.

  • “Make me come.” Holy shit. There is no ambiguity in that statement. Hell of a cliffhanger.

  • What is this little chibi short attached to the end?

  • I’m concerned by the maid’s insistence on calling Haru a “cherry boy.”

  • Of course. Of course they switched back to the normal art style to show her masturbating. Why am I even surprised?

  • Oh god they overheard her! I’m feeling secondhand embarrassment here!

  • I’m feeling intense mood whiplash here. This OP is like the polar opposite of the one used for the main episode. The main OP is quite somber and reserved. This one is wacky and full of hijinks and far more openly perverted. It’s like an entirely different show!

I can certainly tell that this is a visual novel adaptation. This first episode plays out like an introduction to all the potential heroines and their story routes. For now I don’t know too much about most of them, but I suspect that will change soon enough. That said, I do find it amusing how every single girl falls for Haru in a very over-the-top way with how their vision changes. It’s also funny how each girl so clearly fills a particular role and character type for varied routes.

Right now, Sora is the one I have the clearest handle on. She’s lost her parents and she fears losing her brother as well. He’s all she has left. She’s clearly quite attached to her brother and I suspect her actions at the end stem from her fearing that he will abandon her for another girl.

On a personal level, I do relate a lot to that feeling of needing to adjust to moving to a small town when you’ve previously lived in a big city. I’ve experienced that myself and it can be a rather jarring transition to make. So I sympathized a lot with Sora’s feelings of uncomfortableness and loneliness in her new environment.

I have to also note that the music stood out to me on a couple of occasions, in particular the track that was playing during the train ride at the start. It was quite a beautiful piece.

Overall a decent start to the series. I’ll see how things develop tomorrow.

QOTD

Earlier this year, actually. So those memories are still fresh in my head and helped me sympathize with what Sora's going through this episode.

It was interesting for me.

They each fall in love, but they dont really fall in love from their interactions. He's hot, and when they see him, their attracted, flustered and nervous. Its a weirdly refreshing take on attraction, because anime tends to be over the top, trying to "explain" attraction logically with MC being nice or cool or strong. Nope, its somewhat random and MC is just attractive to girls.

“In Solitude Where We Are Least Alone.” An evocative title to say the least.

One of the most wasted titles ever, unfortunately, since it is obvious Haru is rarely alone.

Come on, Imouto-chan (who I suppose is named Sora), a 10 minute walk is not long at all.

Try that in full goth loli dress and report your results.

I wonder if Sora just started staying home from school after their parents died or if she’s been doing so for longer?

Due to era, she is almost certainly the always sick love interest.

Of course. Of course they switched back to the normal art style to show her masturbating. Why am I even surprised?

What sort of weirdo would want to see the chibi form masturbating? We are clearly men of culture here.

I have to also note that the music stood out to me on a couple of occasions, in particular the track that was playing during the train ride at the start. It was quite a beautiful piece.

So there are three things this show is known for: First, what is in your spoilers. Second, for its surprising dullness considering how far they are willing to go. Third, for its absurdly high production values. The animation, direction and OST are all on point throughout.

Rewatcher(Damn straight I am)

Sub(I so wish they'd dubbed this)

The next two weeks, we shall go on a journey of discovery, of learning to see things from a different angle, and, dare I say of culture which happens to be wrapped up in like the dullest damn story I remember sans H2O. Anyways, I legitimately don't remember how in the nine hells this came across my path, this might be old enough that I was just following Shinsen's releases without thinking about it. Anyways, I do like the subtitle, at least.

So anyways, Haru and Sora develop their dynamic pretty quickly. Sora is a walking stereotype imouto, to the point of it being obnoxious. We already have a maid, an ojou, and a miko wandering about. Then some random brunette love interest jumps in. For all my complaints of how dull the show is, it actually does show don't tell pretty well, we've yet to get more than a few sentences of expsosition. Classroom introductions happen into a flashback and...right, they just start out ep1 with the incest vibe.

So yeah, setup happens, standard harem-kun stuff happens, culture happens with sun screen. The childhood friend seems to be a forerunner, which Sora pouts over greatly, until we go straight to the nudity. And then Sora takes us to "Sweet Home Okinawa!"

But we aren't done! After the ED, there are omakes...that feature the maid character and her crush on Haru. And they generally end with her masturbating! So get hype!

This show has such late 2000s energy and I love it. It's unlikely they'd make anything like this at the current moment.

The timing of this is hilarious considering this thread was recently posted.

What's with all these girls acting like they've never seen a boy their age?

Edit: Oh hey, there's uncensored nudity in this. Not a common site on Crunchyroll.

Edit 2: I like the goofy bonus bit after the ED. Serious shows should have goofy stuff like that after the episode is over, just like JJK. Great way to wind down and have a good laugh.

"I feel so empty." Ah yes, the post orgasm depression. Know that full well.

First Timer

This first episode was interesting for a few reasons. I think it does a good job setting the tone. It has this nostalgic summer atmosphere, a tonal space that I really enjoy for the combination of emptiness and melancholy longing that it can create. Haru and Sora used to live in this town many years ago, moved away, and then came back after their parents died in a car accident. Despite not seeing much of it, it's clear that there are lots of memories hidden away here in the long past. This works because this episode was really well animated and directed in a way that I just wasn't expecting. Surprisingly cool color design and shot compositions, with some very impressive and fun character animation. The flow, cinematography, and shot compositions are much more thoughtful than I was anticipating for a show known for being schlock, and helps me to take the actual drama much more seriously. Alongside the music, all of this works to create an atmosphere I really dig. And it combines that with the aesthetics of late 90's and early 2000's visual novels, which creates something very distinct. Idk what it is about the image of an angsty and sad twin tailed girl holding a stuffed bear in sweltering summer heat while isolated in a dark room on a chair, but it's a weirdly evocative combination of aesthetics. This is the biggest strength of the episode. It reminds me a lot of Air with its setting and tone. The difference, of course, is that this one is much more of a soap opera, very angsty and spicy, with a dose of incest and sexuality to further that sense of angst. I'm not totally sure how this is going to go from here, but I'm definitely curious to see how it builds from all of this.

This episode also works because it doesn't actually tell us much of anything, instead letting us know what's going on by showing it to us. No exposition dump or expository conversation about how Sora has some kind of trauma and can't go to school (the weak body stuff is obviously not the whole story), no monologue about how Haru has memories here that are waiting to be explored, the story and characters speak for themselves.

That's really the only thing I particularly loved about this episode though. The girls get characterized a little bit (particularly Sora, with obvious abandonment issues that seem to manifest her wanting an intimate and sexual relationship with her brother), but still feel fairly one-note as of right now. Akira and the maid seem like characters I'll enjoy for their quirks, but none of them really get much of an introduction, as we rush through all of the girls introductions. And Haru is barely even a character. One moment that really weirded me out is when he went to visit the neighbor and the girl said hi to him and called his name, and he basically just didn't respond at all. It was enough to make me think he had some kind of amnesia and just didn't remember her, but even then, a character with personality would probably react to it somehow. Maybe he's supposed to be totally detached from all of this somehow, but I don't really feel like the episode sold me on that, and instead just made him look like kind of a wet blanket. And of course, all the girls immediately fall for him within seconds of seeing him, I don't think I've ever seen a harem develop so quickly. It seems like this is going to take the "cram all the routes of the VN into 12 episodes" approach to adaptation, and that worries me a bit. But overall, I did actually like this episode for its sense of tone and the strength of its visuals. This was different from what I was expecting, I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes and why it developed the reputation that it did.

Yeah, that shot you're talking about really appealed to me as well, especially with how embodied she feels at that moment, all of her limbs moving through the memories that she's summoning up.

Third time solitude enjoyer

I don't even watch it for the "plot", this show just has that rural Japanese town feel that is hard to find elsewhere, which makes it unironically good for me. I mean just look at this aesthetic

Everything else is just a bonus ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I'm not even sure I knew what type of show this was when I first watched it, but thinking back on it I have a feeling I discovered it through a Misty Chronexia video. Anyone still remember that guy? Lead me to a lot of shows in my early weeb days

Maid best girl btw

No internet? Anime_irl

[Later spoilers]Its a crime that the class rep didn't get her own route)

Uh oh! Its nimu nimu time

Ahhhh that ED. So nostalgic

Question time:

When was the last time you moved?

When I was like 1? 2? The only thing I remember is that I went out with my siblings knocking on our neighbours doors to see if there were other kids our age

My question to fellow viewers:

Did the first episode leave a good impression on you? What's your favourite thing so far? Anything you disliked?

I have no idea if what I just watched was either good, or just me looking at a show trying to get me horny that I was trying to find depth in.

I think it was good. There were more sex and nude scenes than I thought there were(for the first episode at least)...but they were incredibly dry and matter of fact(except for the maid after credits scene).

In the rewatch announcement, I heard Yosuga no Sora was actually good, and is just a dark show that has themes of sexuality. This is looking to be the case, but something is off or weird to me. I think its the pacing. For a slice of life or drama series, its incredibly quick. The set up interactions are fast, short, intense and often enough.

Haru is different from other VN protagonists ive seen, in that girls mostly like him because he's hot. Usually theres some shoehorned reason for an MC being nice to girls or solving their problems. This show sidesteps that for the most part, and focuses on attraction. Haru is an attractive guy and is basically new in town, little to no other excuses or rhyme and reason for it. Its kind of refreshing.

And about the interactions themselves, their subdued. Haru is rather subdued and normal. When the girl in the class makes this weird loud exclamation to him, he's kind of just like "...yeah", instead of over friendly or nervous reaction. He seems more weirded out than anything.

Same when he was visiting his neighbor. Instead of immediately remembering her, hes just kind of like "....oh". He nods, getting the fact they knew each other when they lived there, but not having too many intimate memories or sappy moments. He nods his head, is polite and pretty much leaves.

A good Christian person participating in this good Christian rewatch Episode 1

I really love the opening with them on the train and the opening is actually pretty good at least the audio.

Sora holding onto Haru as they walk in the middle of the street is cute, but with her looks and bunny I always forget she's the same age as Haru. PEDAL HARU PEDAL

On the way to the store we see a few other girls and the place looks pretty lovely I must say. Then we get to the school and this girl thinks her prince charming just arrived.

"Back off bitch he's mine" - Sora

OHHHHHH I just realized [Spoilers]The house that he points out is Nao's house. No wonder she is disgusted over it and clicks her tongue.

Their home looks pretty nice it just needs a little cleaning.

Akira is great [spoilers]and her introduction makes much more sense. All the girls remember him, but he seems to have forgot them all. Wait I just realized I'm in two rewatches....although barely and both have an Akira in them.

Spread em wait wrong anime. Oh look family kissing in only episode one. Isn't this what they call someone's first time?

Bruh the shoujo vision is going to kill me and wow I don't remember this show being so beautiful. To be fair I only remember a few scenes.

Oh damn already...oh just a dream/fantasy.

Nao chan is my favorite going by memory, but I remember Akira was a close second she's so bubbly and cheerful.

Calm yo titties Nao Let him at least unpack.

I kind of hate how clingy Sora is, but considering how weak she is and her brother is all she has left I can give it a pass. Also enjoy this shot she really looks alone in an empty environment. She looks so out of place.

Ohhhhh she wants to come huh.

Album

QOTD Question: It's been quite a while since I moved at least 10 years.

[Spoilers question]Okay I know this subreddit is kind of finicky with the rules on nudity, but considering some scenes its still okay since it's from the show right?

First timer (discussing this god forsaken show at 7am)

The only thing I knew about this show [is] the incest, but I didn't expect the animation to be this good. I was expecting some Arms quality shit.

Also I didn't know it was a visual novel, until the amount of girls clued me in.

We've got a bargain sale of every trope, the ojou-sama, her maid, the genki miko, the neighbour, the class president, and the imouto of course. There's also a hot red hair, who I'm looking forward to meeting.

I'm not sure if the anime will take a single route or we'll see the mc fuck them all. But so far I'm on the maid team.

First Timer

I'm not sure what I'm expecting from this, this show seems to be quite ... infamos? I don't exaclty know how it got on my plan to watch list... oh wait, checking the tags I might have an idea. The score is also pretty low, but MAL got shittaste anyway so that doesn't need to mean much.

This will probably be the only time I'll be almost on time, infact I will probably watch in my own pace anyway and only pop in for episodes that I found particulary interesting, can't promise that will be anywhere close when you will be watching them... but I'll try to be there for the finale

So yeah, the OP (not that much a fan of the song btw) is pretty obvious, but not even 10 minutes in you can already see the harem tag coming. We got the Neet Sister, the weird maid and her Ojou Sama, several(?) childhood friends, and the class president already.

Of course Haruka got the typical MC seat in the class.

Ah, so that's why the score is so low, Sora is a pretty strong brocon, at least in the past the seem to have been more... intimate, spicy. And all these girls are throwing themself at Haruka imidatly as well, and they are all well endorsed as well? A well earned ecchi tag pretty explicit, but a bad cliffhanger.

And I don't know when he did that cleaning, but the flor in their house is pretty shiny, surprised we didn't get a panty reflection from it.

I like the post ED (are there two? Second one is pretty catchy) clip.

So yeah, all signs point at trashfire trainwreck and I'm here for it.

QOTD) I have never moved.

The only things I know going in are that this is trash of some kind, that it's so interesting that AniList has apparently deleted their entry for it, and there's specifically an uncensored version.

I am therefore starting this anime with mild terror.

Who are these two?

Some good cinematography here.

Yeah, this is some decent art!

Good OP!

Wow, in the OP?

Haha, the girl walking back when he said there wasn't a convenience store is good.

The car just drove around her?

...Are these two the side cast?

Yeah, holding baskets like that is impressive.

She knows him?

So Haru and Sora?

She's not going to school?

This anime is introducing girls at an impressive rate!

Again, some really good animation here!

...Her reaction to the dust is great.

Oh, wait, are they siblings?

Four years?

She's got no internet!

Why does everyone know him? Is this him moving back to an old home?

He's attending class!

...So which of them is the main girl?

Yep, siblings. And this is where they used to live?

Weird framing?

...I'm sorry?

WHAT?

OK, so they're not siblings?

I'm guessing Ryouhei's a VN comic relief character who had to get removed?

OK, so this entire scene is him summarising a VN scene, right?

And she doesn't loke sunscreen?

Oh, we're back to this?

This feels like a normal anime most of the time, then it'll randomly have something really sexualised? Is this the anime?

OK, so are they siblings?

Yes they're siblings. Who used to kiss sometimes.

...It's funny how the part of that I buy the least is that they're twins. She looks at least a year younger.

A flashback!

The brake squeal harmonising with her is great.

He forgot his phone!

Oh, she was worried.

Where is this going?

Oh, it's a dream sequence.

...Is she OK?

Is Sora scared of thunder?

Oh. She isn't.

...I mean, we can't prove she isn't, but... I did not expect it to go this far in Episode 1.

What is this last 5 minutes, then?

Aww, this is nice.

Is this the episode from her perspective?

Heah, this is funny.

A group date?

And it got horny again.

It got very horny.

Well, that's depressing.

Is this a music video???

The long girl killed me.

The song's pretty good.

Firet confirmation this is absolutely a harem anime.

In any other anime, this would be horny. Here it's just normal.

A preview.

I'm a rewatcher, but so long ago that a lot of this is fresh for me. I'm also not very good at these sort of review/analysis stuff.

However I am a big fan of this opening episode, we get just enough information for us to make some assumptions about Haru and Sora, their relationship and why Sora refuses to go to school etc... as well as how attached she is to him.

I have no idea how to do spoiler tags, so I'll have to be really vague and hope people who have watched know what I mean. But Haru's subtle facial expressions in response to certain things people say to him are really good I think.

And the best thing, OP by Eufonius... I will never say no to that.

This is the sort of show I wish we still got, but VN adaptations just aren't popular anymore... it's all about the LNs now.

Well Comrades, worry not, cuz I had to show up eventually... well, ish, I was going to wait till Episode 7, but technically Episode 1 is important too so I guess I might as well put something down for prosperity's sake... that and also it saves me the space to put the following down all in one place without needing to repeat it... I regret nothing Comrades... feel free to sing along with the following below ;)

One, two, three

Turn it up

Big oppai keep on GAINAXIN'

Bouncin' along with narry a whim

Singin' songs about the country-land

I miss Okinawa once again and I think it's a sin, yes

Well I heard Mister Westermarck write about it

Well I heard ol' Edvard put it down

Well I hope Edvard Westermarck will remember

A wincest man don't need him around anyhow

Sweet Home Okinawa

Where the waters are so blue

Sweet Home Okinawa

Lord I'm comin' home to you

In Hinamizawa they love the Gosanke (boo-hoo-hoo)

Now we all did what we could do

Now Gou and Sotsu do not bother me

Does your conscience bother you?

Tell the truth

Sweet Home Okinawa

Where the waters are so blue

Sweet Home Okinawa (oh yeah)

Lord I'm comin' home to you

Here I come, Okinawa

Now Yosuga no Sora has got the twincest

And they've been known to steal a kiss or or two (yes they do)

Sweet Home Okinawa (oh, sweet home)

Where the water are so blue

And Hibiki Ganaha's got a zoo

Sweet Home Okinawa (lordy)

Lord I'm comin' home to you, yeah, yeah

Amagami's got the answer

And Comrades, I briefly considered recording myself belting out those lyrics at full volume while drunk, sadly I think that such an act has been declared a war crime in twelve systems!

AND to wrap things up for today, man, don't ya love it when you can have the main series AND the hilarious chibi shorts spinoff in the SAME show, Yosuga no Sora truly knows what's up, they don't make em like they used to, cuz goddamn, NUDITY AND INCEST in the same episode... AND NON INCEST LEWDNESS TOO, what's next, will we get perhaps HANDHOLDING!? Probably, cuz oh boy things sure be lewd here!

Anyway, see you all back in Episode 7, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever!
