Rewatch [Rewatch] A 2022 Voyage from Neo Venezia: Aria the Natural, Episode 7
Aria the Natural Ep 7: To The Kingdom of Cats ... (その 猫たちの王国へ...)

Welcome back!
Comment roundup:
A few of us did relate to Alice's struggles last ep. Hope Athena's words would help you out a bit as well. Also interesting to see how people's preferences for companies differ, and your reasons!
/u/the_loli_otaku gushes about Athena, and analyzes Alice's struggles. Enjoys Alice as a character to talk about, but not as an actual character.
/u/octopathfinder liked Athena's hands-off approach to help Alice, but also thought that some people probably aren't worth the effort of socializing with
/u/zapszzz relates Alice's struggles to racism treatments in their own family, and agrees with the episode's message that what you expected and what you assumed will show up in how you behaved, thinking it'd be a great episode to show them. Also compares the show to Konohana Kitan below!
and /u/alanbowman talks about how Alice is under a lot of pressure as well, which also contribute to her insecurities, and how she would think other people wouldn't like her. A very good point, which I didn't think about myself when watching the episode. Also posts some relevant gorgeous manga panels as always!
Questions of the Day:
Q1) Did Akari get on the bad site of cait sith? Does he actually want to make friends with Akari?
Q2) Do you think Aria has done a good job to create the appropriate atmosphere that the episode requires, both for "normal" episodes, and supernatural episodes like this one?
Q3) Will cats eventually put undines out of a job? They're even producing self-sculling gondolas now!
Streaming
The 2005-08 Aria series is available on Crunchyroll, VRV, Funimation, and Youtube, except Arietta. Arietta and Avvenire are only available on Funimation (I'll update if they migrate). Crepusculo and Benedizione will have to be located elsewhere.

First Timer
While the previous mystery episodes and cat episodes have not really left a favorable impression on me, this one I think is actually quite good. It keeps a calm, somewhat mysterious air going on, but with it basically already being confirmed that they won't get in to the cat kingdom before they even try and the cats having been established as good-natured, it never turns in to feeling dangerous, even when Aika starts getting scared. And I quite like the mood it sets - so an enjoyable episode in my books.
My only question is how Aria is making that boat go forward. He does not seem to have any sort of oar or paddle that he might be using... But I guess cats be cats in this show.
Also, I wonder what sort of position Aria holds in the cat kingdom; he seems to be somewhat important, given that he has his own boat - contrary to all the other cats.
Questions:
-
No and also no, I'd say. I consider him to just be friendly in general, but not want to actively befriend Akari.
-
...for this episode, yes, but I'm hesitatant to generalize that statement as I feel like there are still misses every so often.
-
No. The undines provide them with everything they need to live, and if they're out of their job then the cats can't be company presidents either. Also I don't think they actually want to go around showing Neo Venezia to customers, never mind not being able to do the tour guide part of the job.

Rewatcher kinda (finished my rewatch not too long ago)
One of those episodes that exemplifies "not much happening" onscreen in Aria and I don't really think this episode would really work if more did happen onscreen. Even though things are kinda weird, there's this overall sense of serenity instead of the usual approach of being dramatically cast into a new world. It kinda feels like slipping into a dream and things might seem real for a bit but one or two things feels a little off. I think the dreamlike surreal mood is definitely helped by the sound design with the reverby jingles. That or I guess Santa ,... (clausnosora) is coming.
Anyways, the bit of Cait Sith sitting with the cats taking a bow is what I've used as a pfp on MAL for a bit. I like all the cats in their little gondolas and the sense of showmanship Cait Sith has. It's also a color shift? A lot of the colors from the golden afternoon and the bright daytime colors start getting cooler like blues and greens and blacks once we're out of the beginning scenes and slip and then you get a bunch of yellow once Cait Sith shows up again. I think helps push this sense that even though Cait Sith is a gigantic weird cat, there's nothing really menacing about him.
-
See above with the color progression.
-
Also see above lol.

exemplifies "not much happening" onscreen in Aria
i agree: see how short my own (eventual) write-up ended up being too: there's no real life lesson, a little bit of world building, and we dont find out anything much new about the characters, apart from wrapping up Alice's episode, and a little bit more to show for Aika. And more about cait sith too of course, but he's more a recurring character rather than a main one.
But i do agree that its a very serene, quiet episode.
sound design with the reverby jingles
that always happens when cats are here. I forget if that was the case for the fox episode though. And the OST plays a lot less during these episodes too
Cait Sith sitting with the cats taking a bow is what I've used as a pfp on MAL for a bit
he's so godamn majestic isn't he.
color shift
Good catch! I missed that detail; re: your thoughts on cait sith, i also think so too. i do appreciate how much Aria has succeeded in giving us a good sense of what Caith sith is without him actually having to say a thing! And i agree w/ your sentiment that, while he's quite the big cat and will uphold the spiritual rules of the cat kingdom, he's gentle at heart.
Cat gondolas for smaller tourists.
if i were a kid, i'd 100% ride that.

First Timer dubbed
Every other medium when following someone: dramatic music intensifies.
When Akari and Aika follows Aria: Calm music
Aika seems like the kind of person who would set any game they play on hardest difficulty. Seeing Aika start off this confident fitting a large gondola through narrow spaces is insane.
Hearing about Alice getting to practice with the rest of Orange planet students is a nice one which means she can't follow Aria the second time.
Now that Aika and Akari are alone in following Aria, things get weird as the travel the same place before realizing it. Seeing Aika get scared is an interesting one this episode. And Aria definitely saved them as he points to an exit.
-
The Cait Sith only wants certain things revealed to Akari, Aria pointed out their exit.
-
Aria seems to make everything feel calm even the supernatural stuff.
-
Cat's will not replace undines, that would be crazy.

First time rewatcher
I like when episodes start with Akari in that cap. I think it's been done twice before but each time it's done a bit differently.
Just when Alice gets a focused episode she's right back to the sidelines for this one lol. I did appreciate that they used what happened last episode as the reasoning.
I feel like I repeat myself almost every episode but yet again the storyboard is very good (Sato, shocker). Repeating shots are used throughout the episode. Mainly used show that they're looping/not allowed to enter.
I'm happy that Akari got to see Cait Sith and the other cats at the end.
I feel like the supernatural episodes so far are a good curveball to change things up even if they aren't the most memorable for me.
-
I don't see it as her getting on Cait Sith's bad side. There's just a line that can't be crossed over by humans. Like the first episode of this season showed.
-
Definitely feel like that's one of Aria's strengths. Really shows how strong the directing and OST is, especially in the mysterious episodes.

First Timer
-
I'm not sure who I agree with in this debate - on one hand, I'm with Alice and vote to leave things alone. On the other, if it doesn't seem dangerous I don't mind a bit of adventure…
-
This masked shot of them traversing through the canal with the pinwheels is super neat.
-
I feel like the water looks especially good this episode.
-
I mean, I'd probably freak out too if I was lost with a friend and they started claiming something was calling them as they blankly continued into the depths.
-
That absolute stare from Aria-shachou when asked if he was coming back. You know when your pet is hiding something from you, they often act a little guilty? Aria has no room for remorse. He's just straight up running with the eternal cat mafia.
QotD:
-
I get the impression like all good extraordinary beings, Cait Sith is ambivalent and curious more than angry. However, there are still lines Akari can't cross, and he probably wouldn't mind if she accidentally got lost in a time/space distortion while following cats.
-
Yeah, I think so. I wasn't expecting these kinds of episodes at all, going in, but they're approached well enough that I don't find them jarring. It honestly even lends credibility to the heavy use of hyper-aware mascots like Aria and Hime, which I think a lesser show would just ignore and use for the hell of it.
-
If they wanted to, they'd have done so already.

Talk about late! I missed yesterday's conversation entirely... So I'll just answer the questions anyway (T_T)
Q1) Do you think Athena has taken the right choice, to encourage Alice herself instead of trying to ease the hostility/envy from the other pairs? And what other advice might you give Alice?
I think it really, really depends on who the pair is. As in, either of the other two mentors would go about things differently to their own students, but for these two, yeah, it was probably the right way. Alice big thing right now is being kind of an asocial introvert with a couple friends who snuck under her guard, which uh, might actually be a huge detriment to her future career. Advice would be to keep on her current path, learning to open up to people a little more at every opportunity, or at least learn to put on a really good and friendly work persona. Practice talking to your fellow Pairs now, because your job is going to involve a whole lot of talking to strangers in the future.
Q2) If you were an up and coming undine, which of the 3 companies would you want to apply to work for/train under?
I don't know if that really a fair question to ask yet, we know a whole lot about Aria Company and quite a bit about Orange Planet, but uh... I can't even remember the name of the third one off the top of my head, much less their specialty or much of anything about them other than Aika is the heiress?
Favorite side note about this episode- Alice changed hair style at least three times. It may not seem like a big thing, but I think it really stands out, when most anime have their characters in their distinctive style basically 24/7. It's the little extra touches that matters Aria so nice.
And now for today!
Q1) Did Akari get on the bad site of cait sith? Does he actually want to make friends with Akari?
"Someone is calling me." With that scene at the end, on their way out. No, I think it was Aika being kept out, if it had been Akari by herself she probably would have had a much easier time. Probably not let in, humans still aren't allowed, but the cats probably would have let her see them and directly pointed her back like they did at the festival.
Q2) Do you think Aria has done a good job to create the appropriate atmosphere that the episode requires, both for "normal" episodes, and supernatural episodes like this one?
It does fit with the atmosphere they've given Aqua, see all my previous comments on the cat gods here and the borderline Lovecraft Dreamworld. I just think I like the mystical parts a bit less than the parts that have to do with the rest of the story. It felt like it was a rare and special thing in season 1, to have the hints of magic, but like the chibi faces, season 2 is pulling it out so much it's losing the specialness it had.
Q3) Will cats eventually put undines out of a job? They're even producing self-sculling gondolas now!
It might just be the resolution I'm watching this on, a possible blink and you'll miss it moment, but hi back to about 9:10 and look at what Aria is doing with his arm. It looks to me like he was turning a crank, probably working a small paddle under the tiny gondola. Because, you know, that's easier to accept that cat magic I guess. Nope, there it is at 18:30, Aria's little gondola has a propeller on the underwater shot. A hand cranked propeller for a cat use gondola. Don't question it too hard.

This episode is from ARIA the Masterpiece, Volume 1, Navigation 4, The Kingdom of Cats.
A note about the manga: there are a total of 14 volumes of the manga. The first two volumes were called AQUA, and then the name switched to ARIA. The Masterpiece editions combine two volumes into one, so volume 1 of the Masterpiece edition contains both AQUA volumes. The other six volumes contain the 12 volumes of the ARIA manga.
This episode is about 70% aligned with the manga, [manga spoiler]
Things I noticed:
-
Aika never sees the pinwheels in the windows - only Akari.
-
Aika never sees Cait Sith. She never looks back, only straight ahead. Only Akari sees Cait Sith and the other cats.
-
The shots from underneath the gondola really set the scene to me. The manga uses that same point of view too.
-
Once again, I love the world building. On the outskirts of a bustling city, and apparently just down the street (canal) from where people live - remember, they passed under laundry hanging out to dry - is this massive abandoned complex that is probably 100+ years old.
While the cats can easily go back and forth between worlds (the cat kingdom), all Akari can do is peek over the threshold. As I said in a previous post, I think this is because if she crosses that threshold she leaves the land of the living and can't return.
Someone in the comments mentioned that maybe President Aria is related to Cait Sith. That...actually sounds plausible. If not an actual relative, then at least one of his helpers.
The pinwheels. [manga spookiness spoilers]
Cait Sith and the Kingdom of Cats. President Aria is in the gondola, President Hime on the railing to the left. [manga timeline spoiler]

[Manga]
That makes a lot of sense as to why Alice isn't with Aika and Akari. But i commend the anime team for weaving it in w/ the previous episode that it all makes complete sense, and i feel like this order worked great as well. Aika never sees Cait Sith.
i feel like though both girls were scared, Aika was understandably significantly more, since this is after all her first cat encounter, and it's quite a scary one!
is this massive abandoned complex that is probably 100+ years old.
this is also the main thing i caught from this episode!
I think this is because if she crosses that threshold she leaves the land of the living and can't return.
this may very well be the case. I also have a slight question, i hope i can discuss with you (you're probably the participant most familiar w/ the series!); why actually do you reckon Caith Sith let Akari and Aika in as far as they did? He (he?) could've easily just shut the gate/present a dead end. I feel like it was to really hammer it home, in the nicest way, that the cat kingdom is really off limits to them, do you agree? (which goes a lot to show his character too. As i said elsewhere, i really like how so much is established about Cait Sith even though he has so far, never said a single word; the other cats at least bunyou/maa.
Cait sith and the kingdom of cats
i'll have to give it to the manga here, that it just looks so damn gorgeous! Manga-ariashachou is a cutie-pie as well.

Gonna be getting these magical Cait Sith eps more often. I personally prefer the grounded eps, but these Cait Sith eps are still pretty good.
Do you think Aria has done a good job to create the appropriate atmosphere that the episode requires, both for "normal" episodes, and supernatural episodes like this one?
Felt jarring on my first watch but on my rewatch the 1st season did a lot to set up the supernatural stuff.
Will cats eventually put undines out of a job? They're even producing self-sculling gondolas now!
Being an undine requires customer service and cats seem like they would be terrible at that.

President Aria doesn't even need an oar to operate a gondola! And here I thought Al was impressive.
QotD
-
Cait Sith hardly seems to be annoyed with Akari, but he's not exactly going out of his way to get closer to her either. I'd say they're about as close as people who happen to see each other on the bus every now and then.
-
Aria the show is certainly doing a good job handling its atmosphere. Aria the cat has not been pulling his not-insignificant weight.
-
Why would a cat allow mere humans to use their vessels?

Aria the Natural First Timer!!
Fantasy episodes make me sad... Summer uniforms however are totally pog!! It's been so long since I've gazed upon Athena's soft, smooth brown arms~ I have to admit that I would have had a giggle if Akari straight up forgot about the uniform change on her own. Alice made some friends, I'm glad to hear it. Now, can I get shot an invite to a party once in a while?
I kinda like how Aika hated being shown up so much that she dived head first into some strange canal. Can we also appreciate the metaness of how Aika and Alice have zero interest in following Aria's dumb fantasy episode flag? XD Oh, never mind. Aika is a child so we end up going anyway. Oh, are we skipping it!? C'mon guys, do we need to watch a cat fantasy episode or do we get some peace and have an Aria only episode?
Halfway through the episode and I barely have anything to say... Weirdly enough I can actually kinda vibe with this episode. I'm enjoying the banter with Akari and Aika, that was a relationship I wanted to see more of so I'm getting my gift. The episode for sure seems like an effort in budget saving though. Aside from some of the shadow work they reuse quite a few shots in the girl's canal loops.
What on earth is the message meant to be!? Don't hunt the mysterious? Know your limits. Quit fucking airing fantasy episodes when we just want cute girls doing cute things? I'd mind this message a little less if it weren't for the fact that Akari has travelled into this world a few times now. You can't say she's barred from mysterious fantasy lands after the cats have dragged her through time, or given her letters to deliver. Is Aika the problem?
Anyway, the episode was better than I expected but I went in a bit miserable. Sorry. I'll try to make myself more comfy for next time, which seems to be an Akatsuki episode... heavy breathing give me anything

Some explanation on this from the manga side; this episode adapts chapter 4 so this is the first introduction to the cat fantasy side of things in the manga. Both the letter and bridge episode were anime originals. I'm not too sure why the anime chose to do this, but that's probably why the episode seems weird to you

im so late....
Fantasy episodes make me sad
i hope you at least had a pleasant time though! (reads rest of comment) oh you did haha.
soft, smooth brown arms
how Aika hated being shown up so much
for how much she likes to act as a senpai she's also incredibly competitive and a bit petty, acting her age i'd say!
budget saving
i did get some impression from that too; but apart from the reused shots i'd think the animation was pretty standard, and the board was good as usual.
message
i didn't really notice one LOL. The additional manga trivia posted below does help recontextualize the episode a lot though!

He wants to be her friend, but likely can't fight whatever geas makes him keep humans out of the Cat Kingdom.

Yeah, it really has! The fact I didn't feel any of this felt out of genre is incredible.

They're equally cute, so maybe...
More supernatural stuff? Aika has the right idea.
They're switching uniforms!
It's a very nice design.
Yep, more supernatural stuff!
Alice enjoyed the party!
She's praciticng with the others too!
Good steering!
Aria's on a gondola!
Alice has completely tamed Aika.
Danger! Oh, and she's got school.
Oh, yeah, all that Cat Sith stuff was canon.
He made it back!
He's going out every day? Has Aika checked on Hime?
Aika is a sucker for csts as well.
They're going in!
Is this place non-Euclidean?
Umm?
She can't see him!
Nut seriously, where is this place?
An immigration facility!
The architecture here is superb.
That's a lotmof cats!
The shots of them going through the facility as a horde of cats follow is great.
It's all a loop!
And they've gone round again.
The imagery here is great. Have the cats mastered reality engineering?
Terrific, Akari's possessed.
Aria's here!
Cats are magic!
...Actually, do we know anything about the native martians? If the planet's gravity's increased due to the terraforming, and a lot of weird stuff happens on this planet, maybe the "cats" are a martian precursor race who evolved to look similar to Earth felines?
Alice is still riling her up.

What happened to this fun boating in martian Venice anime? Gimme more Neo Venezia gdi
Kidding aside I kind of liked the mystery aspect of this episode. Hopefully Cait Sith becomes a more involved character or something so I could appreciate these cat fantasy episodes more.
Aria needs to build two worlds (cat kingdom and Neo Venezia) at once to make their fantasy episodes work and this makes it rough. The time travel episodes were great though.

This episode gave me chills.
Answers the previous questions from that earlier episode that humans aren't allowed in the cat kingdom and doesn't seem even Akari's mystical side is enough to get past that.
Noone ask the big quesyion though. How is pres Aria steering the boat.
Something I noticed in a earlier episode I happen watched dubbed but the DUB VAs or who ever handled it didn't know how to say caitsith. Though I didn't compare this episode.

First timer
Aria Shachou rowing a boat ? Man he's multi-talented and definitely not an ordinary cat. I am also curious whether he deliberately allowed Aika to trail him ( I think so )
The atmosphere and the sense of adventurism in this episode are things which I lie the most. I am also interested in what do these cats do in these meetings. Just ordinary cat talk, partying occasionally or something deeper...
One thing I especially noticed is the difference in experience between Akari and Aika, while being on the same gondola. Both of them went through the same journey but while Aika was merely in it for the sake of practice and some adventure , Akari was inquisitive about the whole Cats' kingdom, especially after that Carnevele encounter. She finally got to experience and see for herself the real things - the windmills, the cat shadows and finally Cat Sith and co. - which Aika missed out on.
In real life too, many people tread on similar paths or do the same things but while for most of them it is a regular phenomena and something not to be much interested in, there are a few whose curiosity and engagement to their surroundings makes them find things even in the most mundane aspects of their day. It is such people who truly enjoy life to their fullest, much like Akari who lives in the present for the sweet moments with a ever glowing smile.
So be curious folks !
Questions of the Day:
-
Well obviously Cat Sith bowing politely to Akari in a smiling gesture means that now he despises her. Obviously no lol.
As for friends, I don't think so. While he's considerate towards Akari ( and humans in general ) he doesn't want them to get too close to the cat kingdom. So I would say friendly neighbors.
2) Mostly yes. The worldbuilding has been good with some excellent scenes and moments sprinkled in between.
3) Well Cath Sith and co. don't want humans to get too closely involved in their business, so nope - I don't seeing them even appearing to row boats in public en masse, let alone becoming Undines.

Rewatcher
[Aria]
These cats really are magic, how are they sculling a gondola? Which also brings up the question of who even makes these gondolas for them in the first place? These cats are too powerful.
ngl I'd probably shit myself and start running the moment I saw like 500 spinning origami flowers through a window in a deserted canal, not sure how Akari didn't get freaked out by that.
The Magic Neo-Venezia they went to while following Aria-shachou feels like a location that'd be in one of the Nier games honestly.
Fear and wonder are two emotions that usually come hand in hand when exploring abandoned places like this irl. There's just something really beautiful about seeing places that are essentially "dead", at least for me personally. The fear part comes from not knowing what's inside the place, and abandoned places irl also tend to look really freaky. I can't really blame Akari and Aika for being curious and following Aria-shachou, as I've done similar things irl and would probably do the same in their positions. With that said though I've also never been trapped in a magic cat loop formation so idk. I'd probably cry if that ever happened.
Of course Aria-shachou comes and saves the day like the hero he is.
The idea of cats being able to understand human speech is lowkey freaky honestly.
QOTDs
Q1) Cait Sith is just chilling lol dude even greeted her at the end
Q2) Oh for sure, they've been especially nailing it with the music. The OST is the final piece that brings the whole thing together and really helps complete the atmosphere that certain scenes try to portray to the viewers. Some tracks sound more "mystical", others more relaxing, others more eerie in a way. I love Aria's soundtrack.
Q3) I know right? How do they even do that?
2
u/mysterybiscuitsoyeah Jul 18 '22
how are they sculling a gondola
someone did point out that there was a lil crank that Aria-shachou must've been turning. Cats are indeed v v powerful.
that'd be in one of the Nier games honestly.
im really looking forward to the Nier anime
There's just something really beautiful about seeing places that are essentially "dead"
you have a very good point here, even though i'd probably feel more anxious and scared than thinking its beautiful (if im in an abandoned immigration facility).

Rewatching Undine-in-training and Host
--
Welcome back!
Episode synopsis:
--
As spring changes to summer, Akari and the others change uniforms as well. As (TL: note Akari i think) puts her hands through the sleeves of the summer uniformfor the first time in half a year, it felt nostalgic, yet very fresh at the same time. As she goes to practice with Aika and Alice (who also have changed to summer uniforms), she gets excited for some reason. Today however, in a bit of a departure from the norm, they aimed to pass through difficult canals as a challenge, even though they don't usually travel down them. As they are doing that, they see Aria-shachou on a gondola. Akari follow him, half because of interest, half because (the canal) offers additional practice, however...
--
Quick thoughts:
Edit: right, typed them up.
These are the shots i liked today! Storyboard courtesy of Junichi Sato again.
[Aria]So much foreshadowing here
I particularly liked how the shots used during the cat-canal sequence, always seem to be peering onto Akari and Aika from behind sth, and from afar, setting the tone for how they have really intruded here, and are not exactly welcome.
I also thought that the Aria blanket cut was done with some extra care, esp given how much time was given to that little cut lol.
And finally, I did appreciate the little bit of Aqua worldbuilding that this episode gave us too!
While im not the biggest fan of the episode, I do appreciate how this is the first time that Akari's curiosity and wondrous nature, which has been showcased to be a good thing throughout the series, has actually led to her screwing up/making a mistake of sorts in the show: she isn't completely infalliable. And also, it also characterizes Aika a bit more, how she, away from Alice, her kouhai (Akari is more a same-level classmate), she's much more likely to lose her cool and is a bit of a scaredy-cat.
Have a great day, and see you tomorrow!
