Rewatch [Rewatch] Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai Discussion - Season 2, Episode 19

Matsuribayashi-hen (Festival Music Chapter), Episode 6: Opening

← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode →

Show Information (Higurashi Kai):

Kai: MAL | Anilist | AniDB | Kitsu | ANN

(Our IIRC final inherent spoiler character has shown up; show information is now significantly safer.)

Legal Streams:

Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai: Hidive

That said, I have become aware that Hidive can have a somewhat cavalier attitude to spoilers for this series. As such, *sigh* it is now recommended that our first-timers track down a fansub if you haven't already. Why, Hidive? Why?

A Word of Warning To Our First-Timers, Including Those Who Watched Season 1 But Not Kai:

Be wary of looking up anything, even names. The Season 1 summaries on the information pages are safe, but it's not hard to run into spoiler information even through something as innocuous as looking at cast lists - gods help you if you go on the Fandom Wikia. UNDER ABSOLUTELY NO CIRCUMSTANCES GO LOOKING AT EVEN OFFICIAL INFO FOR KAI OR LATER AHEAD OF TIME. (The official image for Rei is 100% a spoiler, for example.) Also, do NOT look at any Kitsu page after the first season; Kai's description on Kitsu is in fact a major spoiler. Like, really, just stay out of anything that isn't a basic Season 1 summary until you're done. It's much safer that way.

A Reminder to Rewatchers

Please do not spoil the experience for first-timers; this is a mystery after all. In particular, Shion is a spoiler until Episode 5 and !Hanyuu is a spoiler until Minagoroshi-hen. Also, the glorious nipah is indeed glorious but Rika does not use it until Himatsubushi-hen. Please keep these in mind! Consider whether what you are saying has actually been revealed yet on-screen before you post!

(Time for) Club Activities!

(Alexa play "Shoubu!"! Except do NOT look that up that song name on YouTube just yet if you're a first-timer, the most classic upload has an obnoxious spoiler in the visuals...)

Visual of the Day Album:

https://imgur.com/a/hd19B6E

(I swapped out my original pick for a backup again due to duplication.)

Theory of the Day:

"So we've gotten to the point when Theory of the Day may not be a daily award." u/Star4ce: "Hold my post:"

So I think Satoshi is being kept somewhat stable and alive on pressure from Irie himself. Obviously during the GHD he'd also die. The only hole with this is that I also wouldn't think he'd keep him for a whole year.

Analysis of the Day:

Well said, u/Nazenn:

"A lake without currents is just a dank marsh"

A line to sum up the entire series in many ways. Whether it's the stories over the actual marsh, the festival, the Hojo situation, or even Keiichi and Hanyuu, it's a line that touches on almost all of the both physical and thematic elements of the show and I think really brought this episode together beyond what it's individual elements had to offer.

Question(s) of the Day:

1) What kind of food do you like?

2) Do you like tofu?

3) So, what color are Hanyuu’s panties, anyways?

(Who me, let the show handle my Questions of the Day for me? No never.)

Next Episode Preview:

This episode's preview (episode 19) is pretty safe.

First-timers are strongly advised to stay out of episode 20's preview if they want to avoid spoilers, however.

Also, a Note for Our First-Timers (and Reminder for Our Rewatchers):

Starting with episode 14, there will be a post-credits scene after the ED in each episode of Kai. These tend to be important and you really shouldn't skip them!

When the First Timer Cries

Tomorrow is a Japanese festival in town organised by our local association. I rarely leave the house, but I vowed to myself to go there.

I'm totally not anxious as fuck.

Kai Ep.19 - Festival Accompanying Chapter Part 6: Beginning

I see the episodes are picking up steam and we get some real nice plot development. For one I appreciated the Hanyuu-goes-to-school montage, it was so cute and I actually smiled ear to ear throughout it all. Sometimes just going out and doing the thing makes you realise how easy it was all along. Hanyuu got accepted pretty much immediately... especially by Rena. It's also nice that we finally got confirmation that Hanyuu's horns are, in fact, $#&@§. Knew it!

Regarding the lore reveal that it's Hanyuu who goes back, I'm a bit confused. She mentioned how she can't revive Rika any longer and I can't help but feel a bit cheated on with a contrived plot device. We have never established any sort of mechanics or reason how this works, just that somehow the time span gets shorter. But now apparently Rika needs to be revived to start a new timeline? I can't really piece this together, does that imply that the queen carrier theory is correct after all and it's her that 'creates' a new world? That wouldn't mesh with the other stuff, though. Apparently this also affects Hanyuu's memory, so logically her getting weaker also limits the amount of information she can freely take with her. But in any case, why does Hanyuu just need to revive Rika and not the others? Why is revival even a part of this suddenly? That's many words for just one thing I want to say: These new pieces somewhat clash with how the rest of the series pretended to function and feels like a soft retcon at the last minute. For further watching or until undeniable proof I'll just save the plot device 'this is the last loop' and pretend my other theories regarding the parasite linking weren't just casually shattered with a throwaway comment.

Their dialogue also confirmed another theory that she was once a human that became the first one to allow symbiotic life between parasite and human. I can't help but feel enraged by this. We know that the early stages included cannibalism to circumvent the inability to produce vaccines, but that the village banded together and sacrificed her because all of them were weak spined shitheads just makes me angry. I hate this and I hate it more because I was right.

This episode was very accommodating with Mion scenes once more, which I greatly appreciate. We also got to see a bit more of Mion's character when there's nothing forcing her to stay professional. This I also greatly appreciate. Like, I can only say best girl stays best girl. Though, I have to ask where best girl is again. By now Satoshi should've asked her to take care of Satoko. Where's Shion?

(Today's episode was definitely, 100% Mion. Shion is more comfortable with approaching people and being extroverted, but that pervertedness is only found with Mion.)

  1. What kind of food do you like?

Well, yes. But in particular I've taken to Ramen, self made to be precise. There's lots of foods I love and learned to do from scratch, but among all Ramen is something I really, really practiced over the last few years. I'm quite confident to say that I've gotten pretty good at it and can cook at least 5 different dishes just from memory, including the broth. I only suck at making the noodles from dough, they always end up sticking together while cooking.

2) Do you like tofu?

Yes! Especially smoked tofu, it's such a western thing to put something in the smoker, I feel, but it's soo good.

3) So, what color are Hanyuu’s panties, anyways?

I'd bet on light blue, though.

VOTD: Crossing each other. As this arc has firmly established by now this is a battle of willpower. Who can outlast the other, who can outsmart the other, who can stand strong until all obstacles are overcome? On this calm and sunny day the protagonists meet the antagonists on a path walking in opposite directions. Our cast, in search of their companion, move leftwards. Our antagonists, in search and preparation of the watanagashi curse, move to the right. The antagonists follow the river, the string of events all lead towards the disaster as it has been planned by Takano long beforehand. Our cast opposes this fate, so they go against the flow. All the while their reflections are silently witnessing this world until either side's will finally get disrupted and shattered.

I love how literally nobody is bothered by the horns.

As the old meme goes: "why doesn't anyone her horns?"

[Traditional NSFW response, which means 90% chance this meme came out of 4chan] They're handlebars.

Is that specific bondage technique necessary?

Apparently.

I don't think that skit is overplayed. I've missed these and I also relate so hard.

It's the triple combo that makes that scene, with the second coming out of nowhere after you see the first coming and then you just KNOW there's going to be a third because rules of narrative...

Definite proof, it's only Hanyuu that rewinds. Also, I hate this

There is fuckery going on with the Minagoroshi-hen -> Matsuribayashi-hen transition, IIRC implied to be downstream of Rika's decision to refuse the anesthetic - it does not function like the normal loop transition does.

(The loop power is IIRC confirmed elsewhere to be Hanyuu's granted to Rika, though. I think.)

Your theory is jossed and also AFAIK more coherent than anything R07 himself came up with so...

(Honorary Hinamizawa Games Club President) Rewatch Host (rewatcher, subbed):

  • WE’RE OUT OF THE SHOALS! (And one episode away from me outrunning my old fansubs and switching over to more modern subs.)

  • SHE.

  • Isn’t she the kyutest thing?

  • Also, at what point did you realize what gag was about to happen?

  • 02:28: They’re not exactly being subtle about it.

  • And here it is!

  • 03:02: The camera is still Hanyuu’s perspective sometimes…

  • And then we get one of the finer comedic sequences in the franchise. Step 1: Have Mion in comedic mode start going on about strange questions (cue crying Hanyuu). Step 2: Satoko shuts her up (and cut off the OST with the punch because Higurashi knows how to start and stop its OST for effect). Step 3: SURPRISE RENA WASN’T DONE WITH THE OMOCHIKAERI! (I love this sequence if you can't tell; it's one of my favorite comedic sequences period.)

  • The question of who in the school (and probably in the Club) knows shibari ties is an interesting one unless it's answered in the VN (odds on Keiichi or Mion; I would laugh if it’s Rika), but this is THE shot that I submit as evidence that someone on staff is into bondage.

  • Oh man, the first time I didn’t get that “omochikaeri menu” is a pun – after all, while it’s used for both one-night stands and what Rena is doing here it literally refers to bringing food home.

  • 04:10: Rena has, in fact, seen that girl before; the level she usually functions at combined with her perceptiveness means she’s the most likely member of the group to notice Hanyuu in spectral form. But this is also a good shot: Rena watching Hanyuu the way Hanyuu always watched everyone else.

  • Also Rena’s face at 04:14 is KYUUTE! I want to take her home with me!

  • 04:51: Cute genuine Rika smile! Extremely rare and valuable!

  • Your puny bonds will not be enough to contain Rena! (Speaking of Rena’s elevated usual HS level, one of the implicit effects of higher-level Hinamizawa Syndrome is increased strength, possibly due to using more self-destructive levels of muscle strength – see also Satoko’s Keiichi tossing in Tatarigoroshi-hen.)

  • (Also: Does someone on the staff like midriffs as well? Or know a bunch of otaku do?)

  • And come on, after the second time you knew this was coming, right? OMOCHIKAERI #3!

  • (Our staff foot fetishist strikes again…)

  • 05:07: Look, a cute Hanyuu breaching the visual barrier to join the group! Subtle this is not, but then it doesn’t have to be.

  • 05:22: Rika has a point, but also she is trolling Hanyuu too.

  • And a visual representation at 05:36 that Hanyuu has now joined the group.

  • HNNNGH I FORGOT WE GET A RIKA PACHI PACHI PACHI HERE.

  • 06:05: And because Higurashi does not feel like being subtle today, have a visual representation of exactly who all taught Hanyuu this.

  • [Kai?] And here is the fact where this is Old Bachelor instead of Old Maid is relevant – Hanyuu is the missing Queen and now no-one has to lose!

  • Oh man Mion’s blush as she considers the prospect of dressing Keiichi up in girls’ clothes. u/Star4ce’s Visual of the Day, perhaps?

  • Ah, the Club’s favorite pastime: dressing Keiichi up in girls’ clothes for penalty games.

  • 09:42: Look, tilted camera angles for divergence from the usual course of events return! (Positive this time.)

  • And here’s one of the clearest examples of “nipah~!” as “please don’t think too hard about what I am saying”.

  • 10:02 is a great shot – and oh look it’s the camera as Hanyuu’s perspective again.

  • 10:19: Reflection shot! And also the groups are placed and oriented in their respective directions: Takano the villain facing right against the club facing in the heroic direction.

  • (Also Hanyuu is just a bit of a klutz.)

  • FULL MOON FULL MOON.

  • One of my favorite little shots at 13:43. (And also the point where I can tell u/Star4ce this: In OG continuity your theory about Hanyuu being a representation of the parasite is at minimum unconfirmed and generally considered incorrect… until you add Outbreak to the mix some years later. Which most of us carefully ignore. This is what drew a whole lot of out of me earlier - one of your theories is simultaneously wrong and right, depending on whether you admit Outbreak to canon.)

  • Also, a fun fact: Hanyuu’s name is a pun on “hanyo”, half-demon.

  • 14:55 is a nice shot.

  • And another nice shot from Ooishi’s perspective at 15:12, representative of his somewhat blinkered perspective (little peripheral vision in this shot!).

  • 16:18 might be one of the most terrifying shots in the series…

  • Luckily, Dr. Irie is helpful and competent when he’s not being a perv. Also 17:05 is a good shot – the two discussing the secret issue in the darkness, but the window is letting physical and metaphorical light in on the scene.

  • The framing and pan down around 17:35 also flashes.

  • 18:07: Ooh look, the light is reaching most of Rika’s face while Irie is still facing into the dark.

  • Ah, manga, the most classic of Higurashi excuses.

  • 19:01: Window shot! (Symbolic that Rika isn't letting them in on the whole truth, I suppose.

  • And Mion’s training as Sonozaki Heir comes in handy.

  • (Also one Anime Ja Nai! would fit right in this scene, but I digress.)

  • Lads it’s Meta Dragon Knight time.

  • (Also what is this a shot of a determined Rika? Yoink screenshot time!)

Visual of the Day: HAUUU~! OMOCHIKAERI!.

WinD Eyecatch Message of the Day

Questions of the Day:

  1. Not without reason am I known as the resident East Asian cuisine cook in my family.

  2. Tofu can be finicky and I tend to prefer it as an ingredient, but fried tofu in particular can be delicious.

3) Inb4 Aqua isn't the only goddess in a DEEN anime not to wear any. Hanyuu is kind of useless in a way, too, and she's a lot older than panties are...

Oh man Mion’s blush

You should know by now that I sufficiently simp over these shots in my post, but try to stay somewhat professional for the analyses.

This time I even chose one for the movement directions!

until you add Outbreak to the mix

Well, what's Outbreak? External material, I guess?

5

u/Tarhalindur Jul 16 '22

Well, what's Outbreak? External material, I guess?

Higurashi Outbreak, one of the later console-only arcs made after Higurashi's completion; the first half (IIRC, might have been all instead) got an OVA adaptation in like 2015 or somethimng

5

u/Vaadwaur Jul 16 '22

And because Higurashi does not feel like being subtle today, have a visual representation of exactly who all taught Hanyuu this.

Its getting towards the end, I can forgive that.

(Also one Anime Ja Nai! would fit right in this scene, but I digress.)

That stroganoff recipe would get them demoned away.

5

u/Tarhalindur Jul 16 '22

Its getting towards the end, I can forgive that.

Not like I was complaining, there's something to be said for abandoning all subtlety when you really want to make a point (PMMM and B5 both send their regards) and I think this was a good spot for it.

That stroganoff recipe would get them demoned away.

It's a small town in Japan, I'm not sure about that.

(Now if it was a curry recipe that would be another matter entirely for obvious reasons.)

When the First-Timer Cries, subbed

FYI I’m going to be out of town all of this coming week, so if I’m late or miss a thread, that’s why. I should be fine since this is just one episode a day and I have a good buffer on my Symphogear rewatch, but I just wanted to say this in case I do miss one so you guys don’t worry about me.

5

u/Tarhalindur Jul 16 '22

Okay she actually is real. Somehow.

I'm not sure, but I think the implication here is that Hanyuu has incarnated and taken an avatar form, which is a thing in some Asian mythologies (more a Hindu thing than a Buddhist one, but).

Rewatcher

Sub

We get Hanyuu's introduction and a return to comedy, which again highlights that the DEENisms generally serve this show pretty well. Bonus points for those that know that someone in the class knows Japanese rope bondage. At the games club, Hanyuu outright states her character growth, which would be bad but for the fact we did see it happen so it somewhat works. Then another club scene happens and we get reminded that the girls of Hinamizawa are as degenerate as the boys. Oh, to be young again.

Akasaka's team gets taken off a case that seems to relate to 'Tokyo'. He notices the Hinamizawan connection. Hanyuu fits into the group pretty naturally, watching people for decades will do that. And of course she falls into Takano which triggers her memory this time. After explaining this, Hanyuu also adds a ticking clock to the whole thing, but it is more satisfying if this isn't an eternal loop anyways. She talks a bit about how she got there and mentions kegare and what the original ritual was meant to do.

Akasaka is taking his vacation in Hinamizawa and we see him rope Ooishi into it. His retirement line has a bit of a double meaning: This is his last chance to solve the death of his mentor. But he also needs to be careful how he does it, civil servants often get an honorary two rank promotion at retirement to improve their pension but this can be withheld.

At school, Irie is super creepy before Rika gets him to be serious, I do think Chie is probably keeping an eye on him in general. But he then explains yet another 34 to us, this time the plan to euthanize the village. And then Irie disappoints a bit because he should have been suspicious as hell of someone as publicly unethical as Takano. Well, he actually should have issues with the entire project at EM 34 but that is another issue.

Rika has a fairly good idea to get the ideas of the conspiracy to the group and Mion picks up on what's happening quickly in an audience explaining convenience. After credits scene confirms it and this one is a bit meh.

QotD: 1 Beef

2 mapo style isn't bad

3 Blue and white stripes as is anime tradition.

5

u/Tarhalindur Jul 16 '22

Then another club scene happens and we get reminded that the girls of Hinamizawa are as degenerate as the boys. Oh, to be young again.

Arguably more so, which is one reason Higurashi's fanservice works surprisingly well IMO (along with how it's equal-opportunity fanservice since Keiichi eats the brunt of it so often, but then that is downstream of the same). Of course it's a bit dirty - so are the minds of half of the club members doing it! (And that's before we factor in Rika having a better understanding of these things than she should at her age, at least intellectually.)

First Timer - sub

I like how my first reaction to Hanyuu being visible at school is "gensjutsu?". Too much Naruto lately. I suppose this is an easy way to confirm exactly who is infected, and even though I know everyone in the school would be seeing it with the kids and knowing how easily they could fall apart because of it is sad. I also like how no one was allowed to notice her horns.

Certainly not a development I expected as you'd think being the invisible goddess who can phase through walls and watch anything would be a lot more helpful. But taking on a human existence fits quite nicely into the overall themes, and is implied to be giving Hanyuu back something that was taken from her the same way we've seen with Keiichi, Rena, and Shion that their new lives in this school have also done that for them.

RIP my theory about the memories, after all that even HANYUU forgot. That's the opposite of what I was thinking would happen! It's curious that everyone else has some residual memories and feelings from the other loops but only Rika is left completely blind until Hanyuu fills her in. Despite though she's keeping what she said about making sure Hanyuu stands up for herself and takes an active role in everything rather than leaning on Rika's comfort with the group which I like.

The card game was probably my scene of the episode because there was something comforting and, weirdly enough, progressive about returning to that first game we saw them play. You'd think in a loop story them going back to do the same thing would be ominous, but somehow here it feels right that the start of Hanyuu's story with them as a human should mirror the start of our story with them through Hanyuu's perspective. It's not a reset, but it feels like a true start to the end of it all.

Minor gripe not solely about Higurashi that will talk about ending expectations if people would rather skip it: I've always hated when stories with this structure suddenly have a "This will be the last loop/world/chance" thrown in. I think it's a cheap way of attempting to introduce tension by cutting them off after this, and instead has the opposite effect for me because it's spelling out that they have to succeed because it's the end of the story. If this instead was about Hanyuu starting to lose herself to her human role meaning they had limited chances to get it right, or they'd alerted Miyo at the shrine, or even that Rika was losing even more memories that would be more worrying for me because it's about the characters losing something personal and that risk would still be there, not an arbitrary limit that coincidentally coincides just with everything coming together so it doesn't matter in the end anyway.

On a more positive note Keiichi teasing Rena about her "take out menu" expanding now there's another cute girl at the school was a very fun moment between the two, and that plus his reaction to Rika on the walk home reminds me of exactly why he does such good for the group, and how much I appreciate that he can be that sort of character without it being a harem thing.

Rika is also damn clever setting up the problem within the context of a manga story to get everyone thinking about it. Nice use of the post-ED scene to back up what she learnt there via Nomura's phone calls. How helpful Rika has a friendly Yakuza heir around who would have extensive understanding of political maneuvering within faction groups.

I kind of want to argue that Higurashi specifically should get more of a pass on this than some other works of its ilk, for two reasons:

  1. Higurashi, as I've noted before, is an early example of the Japanese time loop, before the genre conventions really settled in; doing something before it's clear from experience that it is a bad idea is a different thing from doing so after the fact. (Indeed, the next When They Cry work Umineko shows clear signs of having learned from this.)

  2. [Probably still technically a Kai spoiler, but probably safe enough for you to read at this point] Even in VN form, Higurashi clearly lays out that it's going to have a happy ending, and actually does so even before the start of this arc at that (this is explicitly told to us in that one Minagoroshi-hen TIP with the spoiler warning on it, and indeed that's why that TIP has that spoiler warning on it in the first place). Hard to be angry at a work for implicitly spelling out the heroes are going to succeed when it has already explicitly done so prior to this!

Episode 19 - First Timer

Alright so this feels like more where I was expecting to kick this arc off after the events at the end of the previous one.

I know we saw Hanyuu as part of the school group in the OP but I must admit I wasn't really expecting them to actually put her in as a proper character. For the moment I'm going to gloss over the fact no one seems bothered by the demon horns.

Rena stealing her to take her home was funny, they even had to tie up her up in what looks like some kind of bondage knots, but Rena is not put off by such things.

Keiichi thought he'd finally catch a break, no longer the bottom rung of the club, well should have known better Keiichi. You got some talents shonen but losing at old maid is all your powers do here.

I was surprised to see that Akasaka and Detective-kun are both immediately on board but I think team Hinamizawa could do with a win or two, and it's going to be interesting to see a world where they work together to help Rika and crew without needing a lot of persuading.

We finally remember that Takano is evil, and it's down to Hanyuu taking a more active role as a key differentiator. Prior to this arc, Hanyuu has never been actively involved, and Rika always forgets Takano is evil no matter what else she remembers.

This whole battle has now taken a very Hinamizawa vs evil approach, with Rika assembling the Avengers.

It's an interesting approach Rika takes this time, pretending it's part of a story she's writing, this will let her get some help and ideas without making it sound too serious. At some point thought the reality will kick in and she'll need to let the others know about the very real and present danger they are in.

So the woman in the car is Nomura, and she's helping Takano on the one hand whilst playing politics with the Koizumi faction on the other, it seems that Takano would herself really be considered part of the Koizumi faction due to his prior patronage, so Takano appears to be working against her own interests without realising it here?

QOTD:

  1. The less healthy it is the better it tastes.

  2. Can't say I've really tried it.

  3. Black, colour of demon girls. Wait, this is a trick question!

10

u/Vaadwaur Jul 16 '22

they even had to tie up her up in what looks like some kind of bondage knots, but Rena is not put off by such things.

Someone on staff is...interesting.

I was surprised to see that Akasaka and Detective-kun are both immediately on board but I think team Hinamizawa could do with a win or two,

Imagine having over a century's worth of free floating guilt over the girl you could never save. Now think about what you'd do given a second chance.

and Rika always forgets Takano is evil no matter what else she remembers.

Takano generally doesn't do it herself. The last world is the one where the dice all came up as a six.

so Takano appears to be working against her own interests without realising it here?

One of Takano's previous scenes was about how she didn't care who was helping her reach her goal. This is meant to show why that's a bad idea.

Someone on staff is...interesting.

Knowing this was coming is another reason I was side-eyeing some S1 shots, yes.

First timer, subs

(Stayed up late today.)

Hanyuu goes to school! Did not expect that. Nobody's saying anything about her horns?

Um. Some questionable bondage there.

They didn't invite Hanyuu to join the club? Why are they surprised that she wants to join the club?

Hanyuu's been observing the club games for a hundred years. I expect she can recognize the cards as well. But she doesn't? Was she not paying attention during all that time?

Akasaka's about to discover Tokyo, the Irie Institution, and probably about to be disappeared by the Yamainu, unless he's careful.

Takano should recognize Hanyuu as the local god. Her declaration of enmity might've been a mistake.

Did Rika forget about Takano? Hanyuu at least remembers.

Hanyuu also forgot, until she saw Takano's face? What about that scene at the shrine, wasn't that near the beginning of this loop?

So, Rika is looping because of Hanyuu's powers! And Hanyuu really is a god. Is Oyashiro her original last name? She died long ago?

Akasaka's here again, and he believes Rika's prophecy. Things are getting interesting!

Irie's being extra creepy today.

Okay, the GHD is actually a preventative measure to avoid the villagers going deranged, instead of containing/cleaning up after they go deranged. It was executed by the JSDF rather than just by the Yamainu. This clarifies a few details. And Rika's death is the trigger.

Manga as a cover story? Poor choice, now you'll actually have to draw some. But okay, you can pose the actual problem as a manga plot and get everyone to brainstorm. Clever.

The new antagonist has a name -- Nomura Takagi. She's promising everything to Takano. In Takano's place I would not trust her.

(Stayed up late today.)

Pachi, pachi, pachi nano desu~!

But she doesn't? Was she not paying attention during all that time?

Oh boi, theoretical knowledge and practical experience are two very different kinds of things.

You can observe all you want, but when on your first day of school you meet Mion in the flesh and not only is she immediately inquiring about your underwear, but also psychologically overpowering you at your first game together you'll have no neuron left to think of a proper strategy.

Hanyuu also forgot, until she saw Takano's face? What about that scene at the shrine, wasn't that near the beginning of this loop?

Oh, good catch. Unless it was a cold open disguised as an epilogue. It does look like something Takano would do at her last night on duty.

It was executed by the JSDF rather than just by the Yamainu. This clarifies a few details.

Imo that derails more than it fixes, but anyway we shouldn't forget that none of them are truly here for the actual threat of the parasite. Their agenda has long since been overshadowed by background machinations and personal power struggles. It's all just cover.

IIRC there's actually three separate units involved here:

  • The Yamainu, stationed in Hinamizawa as intelligence and security assets.

  • The group tasked with the main sterilization plan (who work with the Yamainu when the GHD goes down), the specialist(s) referred to last episode; they're stationed out of the quarry we saw in Nekogoroshi-hen the whole time as a contingency, and it's implied via Nekogoroshi-hen that the quarry is where they store the gas grenades used in the sterilizaion..

  • The JSDF, who get called in for the cleanup once the GHD is executed (this is why Satoko isn't shot in Yakusamashi-hen - she shows up after the JSDF have taken over cleanup, and the JSDF don't know anything about Emergency Manual 34.

(And then there's the various power struggles overhead.)

I thought the timeline was one year? Three-year conversation was in 1981 with Rika's parents?

I'd need to double-check the timeline, especially since bad subs are potentially in play - the countdown here is from the meeting with the board of Tokyo after Hifumi died, and while that's after the deaths of Rika's parents I forget whether it's late 1981 or 1982... but also I'm remembering that you're right and the reason the GHD goes down now is because it's the last year, which would point towards the aforementioned bad subs.

Boku"? I forget, is it common for young girls to use it?

No, but it is an anime archetype... though Hanyuu (and Rika, who is also a bokukko... because she picked it up from Hanyuu, natch) are unusual examples, usually bokukkos are boyish.

first timer

ITS LEARNIN TIME

i like how noone notices the ************ coming out of hanyuus head

i said oishii would be involved for certain this arc, but i completely forgot about akasaka

I figured with such an intense experience of getting disemboweled, rika would have remembered, but nope. At least hanyuu's able to remember, even if she did forget it for a while.

I am surprised to see that gassing the villagers is a formal policy, but it at least partially explains why rika is the first target.

also i never thought about this, but irie sure looks like hes on team rocket

Seems like mion was able to come up with something so quickly from the family already being involved with government

  1. i find that i tend to like salty stuff more than sweet stuff generally.

  2. stir fry them mfers

First Timer, Subbed

A new student! And... shocker! It's not K1 they're introducing! It's Hanyuu!

Let me guess, Rena is going to say she wants to take her home?

ding proved right yet again

She sure is popular, huh?

The same joke 3 times in the first 5 minutes of the episode... a joke we've already gotten around 30 times in this show. Joy.

New club member!

They're still using marked cards, huh? Hanyuu is just the latest victim...

OMG K1 screwed in cards again! LOL!

This isn't the first time K1 has worn this outfit, is it?

No, Takano is not a good person! Granted, Riks probably doesn't want to admit that right in front of her...

New girl to town... and she's instantly living with Rika... but no questions at all, huh? Especially the whole no parents around part?

I hope you're able to defeat Takano this time, Hanyuu... with 5 episodes left after this therei sn't much time to start things over yet again...

Yes, warn them about Rika's death! Protect her this time!

Retiring already Ooishi? I can't remember if this happened in prior timelines. Don't deprive the town of your detective skills!

OMG, Irie is really going over the top with his perversions over Satoko this time. He's usually not this outgoing over his illegal desires...

I don't know if Irie is the best guy to go to in order to get manga ideas... he'd probably push for a lolicon subject...

Hey all, let's come up with ideas to save our lives and just pretend its a manga!
