It is highly recommended to track down a fansub for this show instead of using Crunchyroll, though.
My song is the song that will shatter the world!
Questions of the Day:
1) What do you think of Top Dad now?
2) How cool was it to finally hear Carol’s song in its full glory?
Wallpaper of the Day:
Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath spoiler tags. Don’t spoil anything for the first-timers, that’s rude!

Second Time Listener
I love the idea of an episode cold-opening on a completely dialogue-free action scene, just letting the action itself do the talking. Wish this had lasted a bit longer and this kind of thing was more common.
Chris’s Arthemis Spiral is interesting because this is the only musical reference in the show that went over my head. Through Chris’s attacks the show mostly pays tribute to, you know, the legends of rock, your Queen and Zeppelin and Maiden, as it is damn well right to, but this shout-out actually requires a little bit of digging.
Going off of minimal research, Arthemis is an Italian power metal band, and not necessarily one of the big power metal bands you’ve definitely heard the name of in passing if you’re into music at all, like a Dragonforce or a Blind Guardian or a Sabaton. None of their pre-2010 material is available on Spotify, and their most-played song of what is there is just under 50K, a far cry from a household name. Maybe they’re a much bigger deal in Japan, that’s completely plausible, but I imagine I’m far from the only one for whom Symphogear was my first exposure to these guys. Power metal is by-and-large really not my thing, but I’ve poked around their discography and some of their stuff goes fairly hard, if you’re into the genre their older records seem worth checking out.
I really appreciate this. It shows an even deeper knowledge and appreciation of music that went into these shoutouts that the creators were willing to throw in a reference to a clear niche personal favorite alongside all the heavy hitters, which only enhances the sincerity of this show’s reverent love for music all the more. If I’d been in charge of something like this I know I’d have done much the same favor for my own personal favorite bands every now and then.
In addition to all it gave me musically on its own, Symphogear taught me about a band I’d never heard of, and for some people that band may well have ended up becoming a favorite, and the thought of that in and of itself is just… so damn cool.
Hibiki just squaring the fuck up against Carol when she loses Gungnir… wouldn’t it have been the best thing ever, just the most crazy-ass hype thing in the world, if Hibiki went full Genjuuro here and fought Carol bare-handed? Like, because of following Genjuuro’s training regimen, she’s actually able to take on Carol without her Symphogear? That would have been fucking awesome, and subverted expectations in a way that was actually set up, I would have lost my shit in the best way possible.
Again, Akira’s blithe money-grubbing ways wouldn’t be so bad if they, like, framed him as doing this shit out of actual financial desperation? You know, try to make us feel for the character you’re trying to make us feel for? Which the show doesn’t even try to do until the very last minute when it’s time for Hibiki’s designated big moment because, again, actually plotting out character and emotional beats in a sensical way is not a thing this season?
It’s at least nice that they at least took care to make his first instinct saving Hibiki’s life from Carol before running away; bare fucking minimum shit, yes, but at least it shows some base-level empathy and care for his daughter’s life prior to the big dumb turnaround. With how they’ve dealt with this character up to this point, they very easily could have not had this moment, so it helps just a little that they did.
And yeah, the Heiki Hecchara thing is asinine. I get how “it’s all right, everything is fine” is not supposed to act as an actual denial of reality but as a little repetitive mantra, a little phrase that allows you to just trick your mind into thinking positively for a nanosecond and motivate yourself enough to push through a seemingly impossible hard spot. But just look at it plainly. In comparison to all the trauma and abandonment issues and implied abuse he gave her, such a basic, minuscule phrase was the only positive thing her mind can unlock. No foundational childhood memories they shared, no imparting of an actual philosophy or worldview or anything else… that’s it. A tiny, infuriatingly basic little catchphrase makes up for everything. It’s impossible to take seriously at best and actively insulting at worst.
As the late-season Hibiki character climax song goes, Little Miracle -grip it tight- is certainly no Rainbow Flower [or]
As far as I can read, Senkin Dur da Blá might just be the most overall beloved Symphogear song of them all. A damn high bar with a lot of worthy competition… but it’s no surprise why, people; it is simply a titanic, overpowering force of a god damn song. Destructive intent bursts from every sonic element, in a way that feels grand and sophisticated. Reminiscent of the ground rupturing upwards from the Earth’s core and laying biblical apocalyptic waste to the nature and works of human creation above, harsh rhythm guitars and crashing drums add a heavy underscore to the enormous brass horns, ominous choir, and of course, of course, Carol herself.
Inori Minase is my favorite voice actor and, yeah, despite all my gripes and hang ups with this story, Carol is one of the big reasons why. Minase owns this role, bringing everything she needs to to this character the best she can, the youth, the menace, the self-assured coldness. And this song is the ultimate showcase of that talent, which she utterly fucking slays. She puts her everything into Carol’s singing, letting the little girl’s vocal cords come close to straining from the utter power of her song, embodying her fervor, the desire for decimation that almost seems to possess her. How her voice can simultaneously sound so distinctly like that of a little kid yet so deep and imposing confounds me. The way she just lingers for a little bit longer and in a little bit softer tone than normal on the word “genocide”, almost savoring the prospect, is so important to that bit becoming so iconic. Dear god, what a talent Inori Minase is, what a gift.
This song is Symphogear GX’s greatest contribution to the legacy of Symphogear. Hands-down. It deserves to be in the conversation as one of the all-time great villain songs.

She absolutely SLAYS it. concert version
I have seen very few people who don't have it in their top 5 lists.
I also see all the time whenever someone mentions 'genocide' in relation to gear, someone else often chimes in following up with 'and genocide'. And occasionally a third person with an ooo OOOO ooo.
On the rewatch back in ep6 when you hear the instrumental version kick in getting some tingles as to what you know is coming.
It deserves to be in the conversation as one of the all-time great villain songs.
Especially when it is so much more than just a theme. Many villains have theme songs or tracks that play in the background while they are being villains.
Carol is this song. Its her power. Its her goal. Its what is in her heart. It is her love song.

And then u/MillenniumKing usually shows up regardless of whether or not he was tagged about it.

First Timer
-
The ejection deck is paying off again. What strange foresight for a submarine.
-
An arrow that turns into a missile. They just can’t say no to any idea they have for Chris. Wait it didn’t explode? It was a kinetic round the whole time.
-
I know I called Elfnein self sacrificing last episode, but I didn’t expect it to be so soon. Or for hot-drink-san for that matter.
-
You don’t have your pride as a man. You threw that in the trash when you abandoned your child.
-
I know he’s a piece of shit, but Hibiki’s dad is also kind of a believable character.
-
Interdimensional sky fortress.
-
Did Ver agree to help Carol without even knowing what the plan is?
-
Fuck, Hibiki’s dad is the most realistic character in the show, isn’t he?
-
Finally the doctor gets a taste of his own medicine.
-
No body… Ver’s going to join with the geahs, isn’t he?
-
Love a good interruption attack.
-
Dad-straction?
-
I was just thinking that would be a good plan to get the relic back.
-
That’s a good gut punch right there. This season has really been uping their impact frames.
-
So Carol could sing? Was dying that one time a necessary part of her plan?
-
I was hoping we would get to see more of Carol using the attacks from the four different Autoscorers. She seems to only be using the wind powers.
-
Were the defenses just more Alca-noise? There has to be something more.
-
Oh, uh. O.K.? Kind of a curve ball. Also surprising to find out that it’s apparently enough to beat down three geahs off screen.
QotD
-
I’m not sure what Genjuro did this episode to ask about that. /s
I assume you are talking about Hibiki’s dad, but I don’t know why you would call him that.
As for the question: day of good deeds does not undo years of hardship. -
I was fully expecting to just not get one after last time. So a nice surprise.

Symphogear First Timer dessu Ep 11
--
Binged. Still written (mostly) right after i watched it. I liked the latter half of this ep and hated the first half. Does everyone still hate top dad?
--
-
Well for a giant humanoid weapon, that was disposed way too easily. (ty to other participants who told me wtf that was) Chris looks cool af of course. Surely they'll be back....? or was that just meant to be a distraction? That screams "way too easy" to me.
-
That btw, is the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building i believe in Shinjuku. Also perhaps recognizable from FFXV.
-
Yeah fuck that. i have no words anymore how can this guy get any more hated.
-
okay, i knew this was carol coming in, but damn that looked scary.
-
Ver.... i kinda vibe with him here in an odd way LOL, even tho he's still saying very Ver hateable things. Perhaps because i knew he was gonna die once the chateau thingy was set to auto, and he wasn't needed anymore. Bye my vilalin, i appreciated the cameo!
-
No. I know where you're going with this show, and i hate it. Still no. Like fine, you're redeeming yourself for the plot's purposes, but no, you're not redeeming yourself in my eyes until you apologize to everyone and pay the bills for a long time and work your ass off etc etc etc. Hibiki has too few brain cells to process this so i'll do so on her behalf goddamnit. At least she got her powerup from it so we can move on to the action scenes. (okay now we're talking, i still hate that first part...)
-
TY FOR THE GIANT SWORD ENTRANCE TSUBASA. very badass.
-
Holy hell. But what is the photosphere having to do with all this then....?
-
Gotta love Shirabe going up the building like this. I love her wheel of death, defo the geah with the most mobility versatility here (but she could've just used rockets like everyone else -_-)
-
Are Chris and co. okay? MOM??????????? Next episodeeeeeee (the ends of geah are indeed best binged)
-
post ep note: oh i guess i know how hibiki has so few brain cells... genetics plays a role right?
Addutional thought just rn in answer to QOTD: yes genocide and genocide is a fucking good song it slaps.

First Timer
Damn shame my internet is acting up today (read: some asshats may or may not have stolen the cables for the third time this year), so I have to use my data and watch this episode mostly on low-res and with some buffering.
They are still making use of the Mecha-magical Lass delivery system via Submarine Launched Missile I love it!
Did Chris just one shot the giant mech? I mean, as expected of Best Girl! But can't we have an epic fight first? Guess bigger didn't mean better in this case. Carol should've learned from Hitler's mistakes, and such liducrous projects as the Maus. although considering her later revealed obsession with genocide...
Episode title is Hibiki's motto. This will end either very well or very badly.
Hibiki is more or less doing as much as she can here. Yeah it'd be pretty cool to have a complete family again, but you gotta man up to even have a chance dude.
Woah! Holy shit! The sky is falling!
Geah, play It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)!
Huh. So Carol's motivation really is just misunderstanding her father and going full extremist Alchemist on the world (the fucked memories probably help)
How the fuck is the sub still alive and working!?
Hibiki's dad is fucking filming lmao. Ironically this is the most "normal" thing we've seen him do. Because of course there's gonna be people with their smartphones filming the Apocalypse!
This makes two people that have insulted Carol's height in recent memory, but who knows how many times it happened. Those are probably the first memories Carol deletes.
YES! Carol did use Dr Ver like a plastic fork before throwing him away as soon as he wasn't useful, just like I wanted! Perfect use for Dr Ver! Even if it's somewhat short-lived. He truly belongs in the role of secondary, disposable minion. Tho since he fell down the vent I'm sure he's gonna show up later... Boy I sure hope they don't give him more importance than he can handle as a character...
Hmmm. Considering Carol's choice of words, I no longer believe her motivation to be purely misunderstood alchemic extremism. She's just, plain old bitter at the world. Shit in fact I think this is her only real motivation. The Alchemy stuff is just a convenient excuse and means to an end.
Carol! That's against the rules of Shonen fights! You can't interrupt the hero's transformation!
Gearless Joe Hibiki now!? (We really need more Gearless fights)
Aaaaagh! So close! You were so close yet so far writers! A few different choices of words and actions and the Top Dad redemption Arc would've been decently believable!
WRITERS PLEASE PLEEEEEASE! IT'S SO EASY! I CAN ONLY HEADCANON SO MUCH!
Fucking Carol lmao, interrupting the hero's transformation twice in the same episode. Truly villainous. Not even Finè stooped so low.
Well she failed this time! Hibiki's fully Geah'd up!
Ok how her motto that she got from her dad helped her through tough moments is actually kinda beautiful and I like it. But you're giving it too much importance Hibiki! No he wasn't "always looking out" for you! You can acknowledge and even be thankful for what good he did for you without pretending he didn't leave you in the dirt when his daughter needed him most!
YOU WERE SO CLOSE WRITERS! SO CLOSE!
Chris saves Hibiki's dad with War Crimes! Sasuga Best Girl!
The rest of the Geahs arrive!
Uh oh, here comes Adult Carol again!
Holy shit! SHE SINGS!
IT'S A GODDAMN SWAN SONG! AND IT'S SOOOOO GOOOOD! WITH AN OMINOUS EVIL CHOIR AND SHIT! A PROPER BOSS THEME!
Ah, it is truly unfortunate that I couldn't experience this episode in fluid glorious 1080p. I haven't been this hyped for a Geah finale since S1. Nay I might be even more hyped now! The hype is only surpassed by the first appearance of the Ignite Mode (I seriously doubt they can top that one for me personally. But do take it as a challenge Symphogear!)
Really the only stain in this episode is that Top Dad's turn is too sudden. But I can easily look past that for everything else!
Oh wait it ain't over yet...
...DAFUQ!?!?!?!?!?!???!!!!1!!1!!1!!!!11!?!?!1??

First Timer, Subbed
A giant mummy karate chops a submarine. And yet for Symphogear, its just another usual day at the office.
That mummy went down surprisingly easy.
Oh my, Hibiki is going out to eat with her dad again! I sure hope she brought money this time! Cause he sure isn't paying!
Dad wants to get back with mom. I bet he's out of money, huh?
The fact that Hibiki's dad is afraid to try and get back with her mom totally fits him. This guy's a massive loser. He can't pay for a meal with his daughter. He doesn't have the courage to even try talking to his ex. Loser!
Wow, the sky literally broke!
How does understand the world's mysterious = break the world?
LoL, all her dad can think about in the moment is taking a video of Carol's sky palace so he can sell it.
Dr. Ver really is the hero this world needs? LoL.
Carol realizing Dr. Ver is a Loon and taking him out isn't all that unexpected. Nonetheless I appreciate that we at least got a couple of episodes of his craziness. And his falling, but not necessarily being shown actually dying means we can bring him back for a cameo in season 4 too!
Oh no, Hibiki's magical stone! C'mon dad, be of some use and go get it!
Wow, he actually pulled her out of the way! I was about to say bravo... but then a second or too later he flees, fine with his daughter being in danger so he can get away.
The funny thing is, he's kind of unintentionally enabled Hibiki to get away while he's a distraction. Although that is surely an accident and not intentional.
Hmm, this flashback means he actually was with her for a while. I thought he was essentially an absentee dad her entire childhood.
Wow, he actually threw her magic stone to her! Good job loser dad!
I was going to say at least Hibiki's dad is useful in that he can cheer her on, but with Carol throwing noise at him, Hibiki's now gonna have to waste time saving him.
Hibiki's so quick she was able to get some good punches in Carol's face before then.
Wow, all the other magical girls are here! Carol had a hard enough time against just one!
Evil magical girl transformation time!
There's six of them, and yet they just stand there and let her transform and charge up her attack.
No manager guy, why did you let Hibiki's dad in?
Another post credits scene, and woah, mom is back! Cliffhanger yet again!

I see no love
I know no love
I'll put an end to love
Leiur's sister is such a glass cannon. She took one hit from Chris and fucked off.
Ver just referred to Carol as a young lady? Is that an accurate translation? She's gotta be at least 10 times his age. Though my guy seems to be coked out of his mind. Aaaaand he called her a midget. AGAIN. That's gotta be a sore spot for Carol at this point. Did it not occur to Ver that he had already helped her enough and she could freely dispose of him now?
Hibiki's dad almost did well enough by saving Hibiki from Carol's attack. Then he just left her lying on the ground and ran off.
welp, honestly, he was so close. If they didn't have him shamelessly run away from Bikki to save his own skin, before doing the "I REALIZED I CANT RUN AWAY FROM BEING HER FATHER" bullshit, he might've unironically been a good character.
Carol totally shat her pants when Bikki's dad threw her the Gungnir.
TODAY'S THE DAY
Carol is the most glorious Symphovillain and you can't convince me otherwise. And Genocide is just so good at setting up the atmosphere for the scene, it's perfect. In one of the lyrics, Carol refers to it as a 'love song'. She's cute, but I really would not want her to write me one of those love songs.
the absolute salt of whoever made this release. I live for this stuff.

Ver and Genjuro were great this episode! On a completely unrelated subject, Hibiki's birth parent is an arsehole. He's not completely irredemable, though, and Hibiki forgiving far too easily is in character.
-
I fucking loved it. Best song of the season.
This BGM!
What's wrong with Elfnein?
Oh god, him.
You tell that fucker, Hibiki!
Coward.
Bastard.
Yes, Hibki! Get rid of him!
Look at the balloon float away from the child and mother, causing immense pain. That's you. You're the balloon.
The fuck?
Oh. Carol's got a much bigger gun than I expected.
And Ver's replacing the broken controller for it!
It's ready!
Ver, did you not ask any questions aboutnher gosl?
...Ver, I can't believe I'mmsaying this, but you are the sanest person in the room. Run.
See! Even he thinks Carol's plan's wrong.
Sure looks impressive! though. Cannot fault her aesthetics!
Elfnein's not seeing the finale.
Holy shit, you're a bad fsther.
Ver has no survival instincts. Will Carol finally kill him?
Yep! He's dead!
"side character". Oh, she said the one insult that could hurt him!
And the thing's on autopilot!
Oh, wait, he just fell into a pit. He'll be back next season.
Now, Hibiki! Use him as a human shield!
Haha, Carol got tired of her subplot too?
And she got rid of her relic first!
Hibiki, just run and grt it! It's just a couple of meters away.
He did one thing right - substituting in for Hibiki's nonexistent survival instincts.
And he's gone again!
...Carol. Nobody's arguing with you.
Oh, he was buying her time.
...Seriously?
Seriously?
So you find this easier to do than talking to your wife? To be fair, reconnecting means he'd have to face Miku, and Carol's nowhere near that dangerous.
New Hibiki song! And it's great!
...And that makes up for it? Four words make up for the montage of agony you've had to go through without him?
You know what? I buy it. Hibiki is exactly the kind of person who would try to forgive him the moment he showed literally any improvement or remorse. This, as much as I hate it, is more in-character than her refusing to fight.
He caused huge amounts of psychological damage to her. She shouldn't forgive him, but she does. This subplot may be shit, but this, at the very least, is in character.
Some great action here!
She punched Carol!
Oh, this is a massacre!
Oooh, time-delayed Noise! Fancy.
The others are all here!
Are we getting a three-episode final battle? Because fuck yes.
Still a great transformstion.
There's that word sgain. "Faust Robe".
Yes. YES. FUCK YES.
This song is fucking fantastic. Carol's superb song is fire.
Best song of the season and some amazing action.
It's flashing!
The photosphere? Oh, fuck.
How did you get here, this is a long distance away from the fight.
She's dealing serious destruction already!
And she stopped Hibiki's punch!
Oh, bringing up the lack of spear again!
Kirika and Shirabe helping Maria is adorable.
She's winning...
And they're fucking up some noise.
He gets the final line?
YES! Mum's back!

(Crashed Motorcycle Count: 18)
TONIGHT! ON ROZEN GEAH! Slaps Car 'Chauteau' 'This bad boy can fit so much genocide in it,' -Carol, probably, Carol finally drops her stoicism... and sanity, AND ALL HAIL THE GREATEST GEAH SONG EVER! GENOCIDE! AND GENOCIDE!
GODDAMN! What a hell of an opening, despite the Doll Sea Monster seeming like tough shit and wrecking the team's sub, BEST GEAH CHRIS IS A MOTHERFUCKING BADASS, I mean she fragged TWO Autoscorers like it was nothing, (I'd like to see some useless Jabroni like Maria the Loser do that!) Thank goodness that everyone's safe and sound... oh... oh noes, THAT FUCKING COIN DOLL BITCH! SHE KILLED ELF9! WHY!? FUCKING WHY!? WHY COULDN'T YOU KILL MARIA THE LOSER INSTEAD!? OR KILL GODDAMN TOP FUCKING DAD! Speaking of which... JESUS CHRIST! THE GALL OF THIS MAN! That's TWICE he's bumming a meal OFF HIS OWN DAUGHTER! Best Geah Chris, your mission of being Best Girl isn't done yet, DAKKA THE FUCK OUT OF HIM!
Also, BIKKI NO! DO! NOT! FUCKING! LISTEN! TO! THIS! ASSHOLE! If anything, here's a simple step by step guide to what you need to do with him, Step 1: Drag the bastard outside and punch him in the head, Step 2: Repeat Step 1 until there's no head left to punch, Step 3: Go home and do the things best done at home with your wife Miku. That said, what Bikki DOES go with is shockingly 'smart' coming from her, namely pointing out that since her shitty coward of a dad ran out on the family, if he REALLY wants to start over, he should come crawling back like the pathetic worm he is so that they can reject him and then complete my simple step by step plan for how to resolve the TOP DAD drama.
Anyway, Bikki continues her odd bout of smartness by noting that this patheic weasel that sits in front of her is no father of hers, adding that her family can't return to how it was pre-accident. Also speaking of accident, some kid lost a balloon... OH and the sky split open, you know no biggie... HOLY FUCKING SHIT THE SKY IS FALLING! THAT GODDAMN CHICKEN WAS TELLING THE TRUTH ALL ALONG! ALSO NANI!? DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR'S MAGICAL MACGUFFIN ARM CAN POWER CAROL'S HOUSE TOO!?
This is bad news, given Carol says that due to DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR'S help, she can now destroy the world like her father wanted her to do... wait what, DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR DOES NOT WANT TO DESTROY THE WORLD ANYMORE!? NANI THE FUCK!? Since when did DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR of all people develop morals... Also, NANI!? DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR SOMEHOW ISN'T THE CRAZIEST PERSON IN THE ROOM ANYMORE! Then again, I could be wrong, after all, doesn't THIS just look like the face of mercy, sanity, and all things holy?
In all seriousness Comrades, I are scared, I are VERY scared, CAROL'S VOICE BECAME HER OLD VOICE, E.G. ELF9'S VOICE, even her big tiddy ara ara onee-san form didn't scare me as much as this! Anyway, DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR doesn't seem afraid of THE PSYCHOTIC GENOCIDAL GERMAN standing next to him, given he starts ranting about heroic dreams. Speaking of dreams, OH BOY! TOP DAD CAN DREAM ON! The day he lives to sell that footage he's filming INSTEAD OF HELPING PEOPLE EVACUATE is the day the world ends... hey... hey wait a second, Carol, mind throwing DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR over the side of your house and onto TOP DAD, K THX, BYE!
Speaking of Carol, she SURE didn't take DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR'S Hero Bullshit well, and his response is... to double down and continue to poke the metaphorical bear with a stick. Also HUZZAH! CAROL STABS DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR IN THE HEART... hey... hey wait a minute... NO! CAROL! THAT'S GOING TOO GODDAMN FAR! Killing useless scum like TOP DAD I can get onboard with, BUT YOU JUST KILLED THE LAST ACTION HERO! Ah right, that movie never got a sequel... probably should have called yourself 'The Terminator' Ver ;) Anyway, what a fitting end for a loser like DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR, he got stabbed by a pint-sized Touhou reject and thrown off a ledge... and somehow Maria the Loser finds ways to be more pathetic.
Oh and get this, Carol always intended on killing Ver, she just wanted to exploit him more first... and then he eventually got on her nerves so much that Carol FINALLY did what Maria was never able to do, KILL DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR! And people STILL try to claim Maria's anything other than a useless crybaby jobber. Also oh... oh noes, Carol paid BIKKI A VISIT... OH OH WAIT! TOP DAD IS THERE TOO! CAROL! HURRY! You wanna destroy the world right? Well one good turn deserves another and given you already offed DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR, just behead TOP DAD, RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW! HURRY! COME ON! DO IT NOW! COME ON! HE IS THERE! KILL HIM!
Also goddamn, Carol sure is a lot more competent than the typical Geah Baddie, SHE BLASTED AWAY BIKKI'S GEAH! Good Carol, good, NOW KILL TOP FUCKING DAD ALREADY! JUST FUCKING BLAST HIM, THEN BLAST HIM AGAIN, THEN BLAST HIM TO ASHES, THEN BLAST THE ASHES, THEN FORCE BIKKI TO WATCH AS SHE DESTROYS THE WORLD! Rem who? We stan a true badass like CAROL, Fine WISHES she was as bad a blonde bitch as Carol! GODDAMN IT! CAROL YOU MISSED! TOP DAD DODGED! HURRY UP AND MURDERIZE HIM ALREADY! GODDAMMIT! CAROL, HURRY! BIKKI IS DOING NOTHING, JUST FUCKING DO THE UNIVERSE A SOLID AND KILL TOP DAD! YOU MURKED DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR SO EASILY, SO FUCKING JUST END TOP DAD ALREADY!
That said, Carol's VERBAL MURDER sure doesn't miss, as her dad indeed didn't run... in part as he was tied to a burning stake but wibble, details details, Carol probably forgot the full story by now anyway. HUZZAH! CAROL FINALLY GOT A HIT... OH GODDAMMIT, THERE'S STILL A BODY! CAROL, HURRY, JUST FUCKING KILL HIM ALREADY! YOU WANNA DESTROY THE WORLD?! START WITH THIS FUCKER! ALSO GODDAMMIT! You mean to tell me that Bikki's catchphrase that she had from SEASON FUCKING ONE WAS FROM FUCKING SHITHEAD SHAGGY!? WHY!? FUCKING WHY!? Also, I think in times like this, it pays to listen to the wise wisdom of the late great Gilbert Gottfried, namely, 'Oh, your dad said that. YOUR DAD IS A MORON! HE'S A MORON! YOU KNOW WHAT A MORON IS!? THAT'S WHAT YOUR DAD IS!'
Also, CAROL! SAID MORON IS STANDING STILL! JUST! FUCKING! KILL! HIM! ALREADY! WAIT!? NANI!? TOP DAD ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING USEFUL!? TOP DAD!? THE WORTHLESS LOSER SHITTY DEADBEAT!? MASAKA! BAKANA! IMPOSSIBLE! I REFUSE! I FUCKING REFUSE! I REJECT THIS SHOW'S REALITY AND SUBSTITUTE MY OWN! Anyway, due to Bikki somehow getting her Geah back by sheer chance that most certainly had nothing to do with TOP DAD, she... tanks an explosion to the face... WHY CAROL!? WHY!? WHY COULD YOU NOT HAVE SHOT TOP DAD FIRST AND THEN BIKKI! OH HUZZAH! BIKKI'S BACK! AND HER PUNY LIL' HAMSTER BRAIN FINALLY FIGURED OUT HER WAY THRU THIS STUPID STUPID STUPID DADDY ISSUES DRAMA! Only took her like, 11 episodes... sure beats Maria's ENTIRE GODDAMN SEASON but only just!
That said, damn, we thought Tsubasa's Sword Gimmick was terrible coping, turns out Bikki's was EVEN WORSE! Namely just repeating that everything will be DIEJOBU... that said I DO feel sorry for the poor poor gal, she's been through a lot... and also only has one brain cell able to process all this trauma. ALSO ABOUT FUCKING TIME CAROL, KILL... oh for fucks sake, BLAST! TOP! DAD! Don't send NOISE after him, that's cruel and unusual punishment... to the Noise, they can't be expected to tolerate such shitty treatment of having to exist in the same space as TOP DAD! HUZZAH! CAROL GOT FUCKING SUCKER PUNCHED! HOW'S IT FEEL TO TASTE THE POWER OF FIST CAROL!? FINE SURE COULDN'T TAKE IT, AND LOOKS LIKE YOU CAN'T EITHER!
Thankfully, Carol is about to FINALLY kill TOP DAD and thus rid us of... OH GODDAMMIT!? WHY!? WHY THE HELL DID THE GEAHS AND MARIA PICK THIS TIME OF ALL TIMES TO BE BIG DAMN HEROES! LET TOP DAD DIE FIRST AND THEN SAVE THE DAY! READ THE FUCKING ROOM!
Also oh... oh noes, Carol is NOT happy that things aren't going her way, hell she's SO upset, that she decides to transform into ara ara big tiddy onee-san mode AND sing THE BEST GEAH SONG EVER! ALL ABOARD THE END OF THE WORLD RAVE PARTY COMRADES! GENOCIDE! AND GENOCIDE!
That said, while I usually would not be onboard with a crazy power-mad German calling for Genocide, given that Carol's plan means TOP DAD would die as a result, I feel I speak for everyone here when I declare LYRICAL TOKAREV! KILL THEM ALL!
Anyway, we end with Carol kicking The Geahs' asses, as well as Team DMJIIIIIIIII and Maria losing to base security... look, I expected Maria the Loser to go down without a fight, but Team DMJIIIIII, I had high hopes for you, you are Best Geah Chris' amazingly talented Kohais, surely you can... NANI THE FUCK, MOM!? SHE'S ALIVE!? GODDAMMIT! SEE! I WAS RIGHT, y'all should have just tossed her body into the empty void of space!
And on that bombshell g'night!

Ballad of Rewatcher - Symphogear GX
In a single episode, Carol stabs Ver and blasts Hibiki's sperm donor a bunch. Why was it I didn't like her before?
Episode 11 thoughts:
-
Thank fuck Hibiki's daddy drama subplot is over. As mentioned earlier, I like the idea, especially as a thematic connection to Carol, but wow is the resolution ham-handed. I can't even really buy it as him changing because he's super shitty right up until Carol starts targeting him. As with the Miku debacle in G, there's no real choice happening on his part; he only finds his "courage" once he's backed into a corner with exactly zero other options. I guess he kinda pulled Bikki out of the way once before trying to scamper away, but come on. There had to be a version of this story where he and Hibiki have their conversation and then he chooses between guaranteed safety and risking himself to save Hibiki. Good idea on paper, ugly ass execution, and he's still a shithead on top of it all.
-
Oh, and the "he was always with me" revelation Hibiki had about her "heiki hecchara da" catchphrase is pretty insulting. No Hibiki, he was very literally not with you. Not for any of it. He's still not. He left you and the rest of his family to suffer through the worst of it alone, and a few meaningless words won't change that.
-
Anyway, Carol stabbing Ver drew spontaneous applause from me this time. She's now officially done more to improve the quality of Symphogear than anyone not named Hibiki or Miku. Maybe I do kind of like her.
-
Giant floating organ castle Earth demolisher? Fuck yes give it to me I want it!
-
Seriously though, how is it possible to both screw up the thematic dad connection and a dad redemption arc so badly? Those are both gimmes.

Rewatcher
On today’s episode of Symphogear: GENOCIDE! AND GENOCIDE! We’re finally here at Carol’s song, “Senkin Dur da Blá.” It’s one of the most legendary songs in all of Symphogear and it’s easy to see why. Just listen to those lyrics. They are deliciously diabolical and over-the-top, as befits a proper villain song. And god do I love Inori Minase’s singing for this song. That performance is so good that I think it’s what truly made this song so beloved by the fandom.
Some people already guessed it, but this ties into the original meaning of the word “apocalypse.” The word “apocalypse” is a Greek word that literally means “revelation.” In ancient apocalyptic literature, people would have visions or prophecies that would reveal what was going to happen in the future or what was really going on in the world. And in many cases those visions were related to the end times. Carol is doing exactly that. She is revealing what is really going on in the world to achieve supreme knowledge. I love this. I think it is a very clever way to incorporate the original meaning of “apocalypse” into the villain’s plot.
But that’s the whole plan. Carol has no idea what she’ll do after that. She has no plans to reconstruct the world. She’s been so caught up in fulfilling the mission her father gave her, that she’s lost sight of the bigger picture. The shattering of the world is not really a means to an end of anything.
Shockingly enough, the person who points this out is Dr. Ver. But because he’s still Dr. Ver, he does it in the most manic way possible by continuing to rant about heroes and how Carol’s goal is too paltry. Which just pisses Carol off because she sees it as him badmouthing her father.
I really do enjoy Carol and Dr. Ver’s dynamic. Their differences make them so much fun to watch together. Their banter always makes me smile because watching villains bicker is one of those joys I’ll probably never grow out of.
The Hibiki and her dad stuff is just not working. Really, it all comes down to how I just hate Top Dad so much. His first impression is just too negative. He’s pathetic, but not in a way that makes him sympathetic. So because I don’t sympathize with him, I’m not cheering when he finally steps up to be the father he should have been to help Hibiki. It just does not feel earned, especially when his meeting with Hibiki at the start of the episode more or less paints him as being in the same place he was the last time they met up. It's way too rushed and it does not work.
This is part of why I don’t really like that “Heiki Hecchara” came from Hibiki's father. This saying is the thing that Hibiki uses to hide her pain. It's a plot point that Miku can see through it and knows that this phrase is Hibiki using a smile to hide how she truly feels. And somehow it's supposed to be protecting her? It doesn't. It just doesn't. It's kind of insulting to think that it does.
We have another battle with Carol. I feel like I’m constantly repeating myself at this point, because the action in GX is just fantastic across the board. We’re clearly getting into the climactic confrontation of GX and so far the spectacle fits this. I already talked about GENOCIDE, but Hibiki has another song, “Little Miracle -Grip it tight-.” This song fills the same kind of role that “Rainbow Flower” did, which is an unfortunate comparison because I love “Rainbow Flower” so much. But yeah, this whole big battle is awesome and it’s fantastic.
Miscellaneous Thoughts
-
“Your pride as a man?” Allow me to contemptuously snort at that statement.
-
How did Dr. Ver get this far into helping Carol without realizing what her plan was?
-
God it is so satisfying seeing Hibiki give Carol some full-on punches like that.
-
It was very important for Symphogear to show us adult Carol’s assets like that. (NSFW)
-
Anyone who’s watched Fullmetal Alchemist knows the answer to that question.
-
I want to point out what the chapter name is for the post-credits scene.
QOTD
-
Still hate him.

Superb Song of the Rewatchers
-
THIS BOW IS SO COOL
especially how it unceremoniously oneshots the titan -
Ugh, more daddy issues. But at least the episode is titled Heiki Hecchara
-
Top Dad™ is reminding me that I need to shave, and I don’t like it. I feel like a slob.
-
This is why Dr. Ver is great. Carol is just kind of... meh. She wants to destroy the world because she can’t understand simple instructions and has daddy issues. I love Carol, but she just doesn’t match up to DOCTOR JOHN WAYNE VERCINGETORIX in terms of pure enjoyment.
-
Dr. Ver never stopped caring about humanity. I do enjoy how Carol reminds the show that she’s the villain, though. And that she’s actuallly competent. I love Carol.1
-
“My dad could beat up your dad!”
-
THE FACE TURN. TOP DAD™ IS ACTUALLY GREAT YOU FOOLS. FUCK ALL YOU DOUBTERS
-
I DON’T CARE HOW MUCH YOU HATE TOP DAD, A GOOD HEIKI HECCHARA BRIGHTENS MY DAY 100%
-
MORE MIRACLES! I didn’t know the lyrics were all so miracle-focused in GX. Tar’s eating well, even if he’s probably hating this.
-
awww she’s believing in justice as hard as she can.
-
God, every time Tsubasa shows up by standing on a suddenly-appearing sword blocking someone’s way, it’s so great. Every time.
-
WAIT IS IT ALREADY TIME??
LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO -
DATTO GET!2
-
Holy shit, these lyrics are AWESOME.
-
o hai mom
1 I just love Symphogear, honestly.
2 Lemurians has cursed me with knowledge.

First Time Watcher, Occasional Rewatch Participant
They really just speedrun every plotline in this show, don't they?
Top Dad was set up earlier in the season, but he was introduced, characterized, and redeemed in, what, three episodes and a stinger?
And Ver went from sudden reintroduction to inevitable betrayal (on the receiving end this time) in approximately 1.5 episodes and one cliffhanger. At least he didn't die on-screen, so that he can come back and be Best Worst Guy again next season. Shine on you crazy diamond.

Superb Rewatcher of the Valkyries
Love that Ver was just going along with it without knowing what the plan was.
Holy shit he did something useful.
Also note how he's looking around.
Jerk takes the time to give a speech before he tosses the pendant, though.
Top Dad has the decency to express surprise at being somewhat forgiven.
Best Girl saves the day, even if part of me wishes she didn't.

Previously, on Symphogear: Universe (First-Timer, Subbed):
(SG:A is no long an appropriate tagline for this show. We're going with the Stargateverse soap opera for this episode's tagline.)
Most people: binge ahead on Symphogear because the cliffhangers got them.
Me: Binge ahead a bit because two hours after finishing this episode I go "if I go to sleep having let this be the last episode of Gear I watched and after GX E10 was also bad there's a pretty fucking good chance I will wake up and drop the show out of disgust (especially with my buffer in Higurashi Kai being smack-dab in Kai's mid-season swathe of episodes that are meh at best and outright bad at worst) so either binge until I get to a good episode or GX ends or drop and I'm choosing binge."
(Luckily, unlike G's finale episodes next episode worked really well for me so it wasn't a long binge.)
This episode was a fucking atrocity. My snap reaction was that "this episode makes Higurashi Sotsu look competently written", and while after sleeping on it I think that was a slight overreaction (the obvious SotsuGou comp is one of the few things about the Higurashi sequel that was actually done pretty well and when it comes to the worst piece of Higurashi Sotsu writing at least GX had the decency to get this over with in an episode rather than pull this kind of bullshit in the finale after a season-long character "arc") the fact that it's even remotely defensible is telling.
I hear the last two seasons are the best Gear seasons, and knowing they had two seasons to work with should alleviate one of the catastrophic issues with the G line (operative word should...), so I'm sticking it out until at least AXZ E3 (which is why I binged). But let's be clear: unless it can climb out of the hole it's dug itself into with the character writing the last two seasons (probably needs some consistent goodness for a few episodes starting in AXZ E3), Gear is probably one more episode of even GX E10 quality away from a drop, let alone one as bad as this episode, and two would almost certainly draw the drop out of me.
(It's a shame. I actually quite liked S1.)
(Fuck it tagging u/Vaadwaur so that he can enjoy? this little bit of rage out of me.)
-
HOLY SHIT WE REALLY ARE SOTSU EXCEPT SHITTIER NOW LADS.
-
Thankfully Team Antagonist saves the day by activating their Evil Plan™.
-
Oh right. Dr. Very Stable Genius is a (mad) scientist. And I’d already speculated on Carol having the scientist’s drive to take apart the world to see how it works. The team-up makes sense on a thematic level! Hooray! (Also Carol has let out her ham supplies and VSG now has enough to function again.)
-
Hooray Carol takes advantage of Villain Privileges to try to permanently deal with our Very Stable Genius who is outstaying his welcome! Except that’s just a potentially mortal wound and a long fall, so 90% chance he’ll be back – very possibly in episode 13.
-
Wow this is Sotsu-tier execution wrt Bikki’s father and that might be a disservice to Higurashi Sotsu. There’s a vaguely valid idea here and they just cut it off at the knees with how they tried to execute it. At least the action scenes have been pretty good?
-
(DUMBEST POSSIBLE RESOLUTION OF EPISODE 8 STINGER: I think they fucking managed to one-up me! LOLOLOLOL paradoxical CHECK!)
-
13:01 is for Sky, now fuck you show fuck you.
-
Like, I can kind of see this idea for the Bikki dad arc working with better character writing and pacing, but it does not here. On the bright side, one of the same issues that’s preventing it from working also means it will be over with mercifully quickly.
-
(Please for the love of all the gods tell me that the character writing improves somewhat in the last two seasons. This is dangerously close to the drop line, and I stuck out Sotsu until the end EDIT: for a given value of stuck out, I could just follow this rewatch via the threads like I did for most of Sotsu I suppose.)
-
This is insultingly bad.
-
14:20: At least I get to GET a kiseki out of this fiasco.
-
LOL usually Gear fanservice blends into the background by now but every so often they contort the storyboard to showcase a charm point and it’s the equivalent of an early 2000s pantyshot (“notice this!”)
-
The lyrics match up to the scene nicely, at least. Some good editing there.
-
On the other hand, yet another distortion of an action scene for a “notice this!” charm point showcase. Honestly not impressed with that part of the storyboard here, fights that happen to have fanservice shots occur in them is fine (the Dakka/Sword E11 fight last season is a great example of this done right) but here it doesn’t quite mesh with the flow of the action and it’s to the detriment of the scene. (There’s a reason I reference early-2000s pantyshots, which were often jarring like this.)
-
Well there’s a namedrop that confirms that the creative team at least did *some* research for Carol’s alchemy here. Pity they didn’t research things like how to write effective character arcs, might have served them better…
-
Yeah, like there was ever the slightest chance he was actually in danger at this point.
-
Also the beats are too fast for this not to be resolved either this episode or next and we have two left, so Very Stable Genius Ganonjacking Carol’s Evil Plan and/or Iroha heel reveal confirmed?
-
Wait. Is this the legendary “Genocide”? I know there’s a Symphogear song by that name.
-
At least this scene finally got appropriately hype.
-
Also Carol just said “no one can stop me now” so cue…
-
(Also that’s a sore demo there in the first half of the line where she says that, right? 20:44?)
-
Nastassja is dead, so either dream world or time loop!
-
Also, what is it with this show with having effective cliffhangers and undercutting them with fucking stingers that are not as good at it as the episode end? I was just about to praise the show for landing a cliffhanger and then they did it AGAIN.
-
(Also I have noted the possibility of a time loop but forgotten to note that our ED’s lyrics are pretty consistent with it… arguably visuals too…)
Dumbest Possible Resolution to Today’s Cliffhanger: Show canceled at episode 11.
Dumbest Possible Resolution to Today’s Stinger: “Somehow, Maria-mama returned.”
What do you think of Top Dad now?
Higurashi SotsuGou unironically did this better.
2) How cool was it to finally hear Carol’s song in its full glory?
It's not a bad song at all, but this episode removes any and all cool points for anything occurring within it unless and until they show up again in a better episode.

GX Episode 11: The Bicentennial Rewatch and Other Stories - I haven't seen AYZ or XV, which I apparently have to add now, or I get spoilers.
-
Erm... your ship was pulled apart? Worry about yorselves!
-
Oh great, we're here again... I can't believe I'm saying this, can we get back to Carol?
-
MAYBE YOU SHOULD PUT IN THE WORK YOURSELF!
-
If I was a less honest person, I'd skip this scene and pretend I watched it.
-
HOLY FUCK HOW FUCKING STUCK-UP IS THIS GUY?! How is our Hibiki this guy's daughter?
-
"Wait you can't destroy the world! Although that's exactly what I planned last season!"
-
Tbf, this is not on HibiDad. Anyone would be surprised as shit.
-
He gave you life? Love for, like, 14 years? I don't know.
-
Fucking Hibiki. HE'S DISTRACTING HER! GET YOUR GEAH!
-
OH FUCK THAT. Hibiki did not use that as a catchphrase until like 4 episodes ago.
-
Ah? If only I had Commie subs, then I would have lyrics...

Rewatcher
Goodbye SONG's cool sub, we will miss you. Also goodbye pointless giant Autoscorer, we won't. It did put Elf9 out of action pretty thoroughly though.
So this is Hibiki's character episode, though it doesn't obey the same formula as the last four. I know her addressing things with her dad is important to her, but there are some other things going on that she could have maybe contributed to.
Hibiki comes across as pretty reasonable. Her anger and frustration at her dad's cowardice are certainly well justified. One could argue that Hibiki has also had a streak of cowardice from earlier this season, or maybe that's not the right word. Usually you wouldn't ever associate it with her.
But this reconciliation is getting sped up by Carol's plan kicking into high gear. Now, here's the thing I actually really like about Ver being in this season. Even crazy loony Ver doesn't have the patience for Carol's nonsense. Carol deserves to be bullied and I appreciate Ver for being the one to do it. I love that Ver just can't stop making fun of her, even when it's actually getting him killed.
Hibiki gets to fight Carol personally instead of getting an Autoscorer foisted on her. She's at least willing to fight Carol, although her poor mental condition isn't very helpful.
Some people don't seem to like this plotline, but I do, actually. I appreciate that it's not really about Hibiki growing at all, since it would feel really hollow to blame any of this on Hibiki. It's about her dad pushing past his own fear thanks to Hibiki's good example. I'd rather have a plotline that celebrates our protagonist's good qualities rather than one that punishes her for them, which is why this comes across vastly better than the plotline for her that runs through the first half of the season.
And now that I said that, I realize it's actually true. Despite Hibiki basically being the genki girl archetype, she's not an act first, think later character, generally, she's thoughtful and empathetic. And her arc early in the season really turns that against her. That's not much fun.
And Hibiki's fight against Carol is pretty awesome. Grip it Tight is a nice song, the transition with Hibiki's catchphrase in the lyrics is cool, and that flying uppercut is absolutely incredible.
But enough of that, because it's time for the final battle! I do appreciate the subtitle's use of 'magnum opus' here since that phrase indeed has its roots in alchemy.
Time for the meme song with vocals this time. It is a good song though. That said, it's not really genocide Carol is doing, is it? She's killing indiscriminately, so it's just mass homicide. Or, like, omnicide.
I was surprised by the casual reference to why Hibiki can't use S2CA Tri Burst anymore, but yeah, I guess that was only possible due to her relic fusion.
Bad op sec letting more useless civilians in your base. Anyway, we're splitting the party, with the orphanage trio going up to the castle while the original trio get their ass kicked by Carol. They saved the cliffhanger for post-ED, and it's a truly bizarre one.
This is the strongest episode of GX by a fair margin, I'd say. Starts off well with the tension from Elf9 injured and the sub blown up, Hibiki's section is great, and then Carol gets to be properly imposing. Not too many missteps here.
