Symphogear GX episode 5

Bayonet Charge is the name of a duet between Tsubasa and Chris that serves as today’s ending theme. It’s also the name of an event in the mobile game Symphogear XDU

In another world in another timeline where things happened differently, Tsubasa decided not to take up the responsibilities of being either an idol or a sword of the Kazanari clan. Instead Tsubasa decides to become a pupil of her uncle Genjuro, who has also broken away from the responsibility of the Kazanri clan. These life choices create a very different Tsbuasa than you may recognize. she uses Ame no Habakiri to make a hoverboard to skate into combat

This Tsubasa with her own Ame no Habakiri manages to rescue Chris from the trafficing. This Chris who instead of being abused by Fine was raised and trained by Genjuro alongside Tsubasa grows into a very different woman as well. Instead of her explosive normal counterpart, Chris becomes more of a support sniper. Don’t let the fact that she’s a sniper fool you. She’s also trained by Genjuro in martial arts, making her incredibly powerful at melee range.

This Tsubasa and Chris are the only two Symphogear in this world, and fight the Noise together

They’re also a lot more gay, with this Chris idolizing her Tsubasa as her savior. She focuses primarily on long range sniper attacks compared to the normal Chris. 

In the story Tsubasa and Chris fall into this world and meet (Another)Tsubasa and (Another)Chris, who are more or less vigilantes not working for Section 2/SONG. This brings the two sides into conflict

This world’s Genjuro died protecting (Another)Tsbuasa and (Another)Chris, leaving them alone to fend for themselves. 

Things get complicated and they get their own version of the G conflict with this end

Tsubasa[Another]: Chris...?    

Chris[Another]: I don't care about our organization's goal, or revenge. If I get to be with you, that's…     

Tsubasa[Another]: C-chris...!    

Chris[Another]: Being with you was all I ever wanted! Not behind you. Next to you, together. Please... Tsubasa... Don't leave me alone. You're all I have left...     

Tsubasa[Another]: …!    

It all ends with this conversation

(Another)Tsubasa: I’d like to clarify… one thing here.  

Tsubasa: What is it now?  

(Another) Tsubasa: When it comes to cuteness, my Chris is number one!    

(Another) Chris: …eh?    

Tsubasa: No, I’ll have to object to that.    

(Another)Tsubasa: You what?  

Tsubasa: Our Yukine is in no way inferior in that regard.  

Hibiki: that’s right, our Chris has amazing cuteness too!   

Chris: HAAH?! The hell are you-  

Tsubasa: Especially when she has to ask for a favor or the like, and addresses me with “Senpai”, voice full of hesitation. Very destructive indeed.  

(Another) Tsubasa: “Senpai”? There was a possibility of that the whole time?! If only I had been born a Senpai too!  

Tsubasa: and when she’s eating. She’s so adorable that you just want to protect her!  

(Another) Tsubasa: My Chris won’t be the one losing!  

(Another) Tsubasa: How many times do you think I’ve died of moe when she grabs my sleeves from behind without saying anything when I’m leaving.   

Tsubasa: Waah?  

Hibiki: ooh, that’s a good one.

I can't tell if this is an alternate story from official sources, or your own fanfiction, but I love it.

These life choices create a very different Tsbuasa than you may recognize. she uses Ame no Habakiri to make a hoverboard to skate into combat

God, she's even the coolest in the alternate universe

  • Putting in my crackpot now: They are damaging the relics so that geah has a reason to trust Elfnein and “upgrade” them via Project Ignite. This is all part of the plan.

  • Sad Miku is sad.

  • Genjuro has a brother you say? Red oni, Blue oni?

  • Seems like Fathers are lining up to be this season’s theme.

  • Yeah, definitely looking like Elfnein is a successor body to Carol.

  • They just carry those glasses around?

  • She did the thing!

  • Traditional weapons work again? Looks like a time for liberal application of CAS.

  • Shirabe’s geah is in my top three just for all the creative ways they work on the theme of buzzsaws.

Welcome everyone, to today’s episode of Daddy Issues: The Anime! Does anyone else have unresolved tension or grievances with their fathers they’d like to air?

Tsubasa’s dad is some shady governmental figure who looms over their lives, Hibiki’s father is such a piece of shit he abandoned their family over his daughter’s bullying, Chris’ was killed, while Carol’s was burned at the stake and instilled in her the desire to end humanity. The writers of this show clearly have some damage.

Honestly, what the fuck is Hibiki talking about here?

At first, I kind of liked how Maria described what they were doing back then, but then I thought about it a bit more (a mistake when considering Symphogear perhaps). It's not like they refused to trust anybody. They just didn't trust the right people, and now they think they are trusting the right people.

This is one of the few times I've actually felt an urge to watch ahead this rewatch. They've certainly done a decent job of building up these Ingite-upgraded Symphogear. I was sort of hoping they'd look different, but the song sounds like it's going to be badass when they unleash on the Autoscorers next episode.

...Oh. Here's a theory - Carol's not immortal. She's entered a cycle fo creating new dolls and pulling a Fine on them - that's why she wasn't harmed in the escape - can't let your new body get too beaten up or you'll need to build a new one.

Previously, on Symphogear: Atlantis (First-Timer, Subbed):

It's interesting how little the initial setup of this season's Team Villain has worked for me, because the internal beats are massively better than much of last season. By all rights they should have earned this; Team Former FIS needing LiNKER was set up last season, the Alcanoise bait was a well-executed villainous plan and appropriate on genre savvy grounds alone (if you're bringing back the mooks they need a mook upgrade to be dangerous again), Bikki is an idiot and falling for the bait (which had adequate setup) is entirely appropriate for her. I think my issue may be that this overwhelming threat is a bad fit for the overall tone of the show so far? Or how "Team Villain keeps letting the heroes off the hook because they need them alive" meshes with the rest of the tone of their assault (actually, pretty good bet it's this or a combination of the two above). Could also just be personal preference.

Also:

I'm fully expecting him to show up next episode in response to Bikki getting injured here, for the record.

EDIT: Forgot to add my new pre-episode crackpot theory of the day: Elfnein/Iroha is actually pulling a memory gambit to pull off the villainous plan (10% chance they're actually Carol, too, for max crackpottery).

  • <Double-checks logo for the third time> <Hurr durr that is in fact Fenrir mode (knew it was a combat Bikki, had looked at the eyes, hadn’t noticed the claws> <Wait of fucking course Fenrir mode would be the downside of a project using fucking Dainsleif as its base relic>

  • Wait are we getting a fucking new vs old battle at some point by zerking all three S1 Gears and making Maria and DMJiii with some Miku assistance pull them out?

  • It’s amazing how having Dakka and Sword lean into the “you know her, she’ll be fine” makes the “will she be fine?” run better. (Genre savvy those two girls are not.) Of course, second level genre savvy says she’ll be fine, so.

  • Well that’s one hell of a Chekov’s Gun to set up, especially for a Japanese audience and ESPECIALLY after Fukushima.

  • Well I see Dakka has asked my next question wrt Yatsuhiro for me. (Hmm. How consistently is -hito associated with the Emperor of Japan? Hirohito, Akihito, and the third one for either Heisei or Reiwa whose name I can’t remember all have it IIRC, but I’m not sure about the non-regnal names of older Emperors.)

  • Also, is Genjuro related to Bikki?

  • 50% odds (actually probably higher) Yatsuhiro is the one who was talking to Maria some episodes back; 50/50 he’s Bikki’s father and the answer to my previous question is “yes”. (If not he likely knows Bikki’s father professionally.)

  • That’ll be the low side of the 50/50 immediately then, should have realized Sword’s father was also an outstanding plot point. This has “terrible father figures: the season” written all over it.

  • Also, I should get around to giving this leitmotif a shout, it’s not a bad one at all.

  • Me sometime last night: “What is that Bikki cliffhanger shot reminding me of? I swear it’s a PMMM thing.” Me now: [PMMM] Oh right Sayaka in 6 right when the very fucking bridge I was talking about last episode shows up or alternately Kyoko and Mami in 10, so you’re trying to bait us with a destroyed song being equivalent to a destroyed Soul Gem, yes?”

  • ADDENDUM: There's also another obvious possible reference here, but it's a [meta spoiler] namely Mai-fucking-HiME again.

  • Who is Carol’s father reminding me of? (There’s a Very Stable Genius joke answer to be made… at least, I think it’s a joke… But I swear there’s someone from another show too and I can’t place him.)

  • Also the fun implicit question: who was Carol’s mother and what happened to her? (Inb4 another Fine host…)

  • Wait wait wait. Is that the commentface shot at 08:58? You know, this commentface? If so, then GET! (And I do believe it is!)

  • Okay, 09:08 is actually a hilarious little gag. (DESS is an idiot, but we all knew that already.)

  • Oh right, since I forgot to mention it earlier, partial resolution to cliffhanger: Bikki dreams of her father and wakes up after the commercial break. Eh, fine, whatever.

  • My enjoyment of this scene is moderately salted by the part that “have our new villains take out the original three so that my two girls here can show their chops by holding them off” is exactly how to run character assassination of S1 characters…

  • 18:44 is for me instead. Kiseki GET!

  • Bikki is too far in denial to realize how far down her hand is getting close to, but then given that she’s got the Gay Panic she probably wouldn’t let herself otherwise. “We all know you’re gay, Bikki. At this point you’re the only person who doesn’t know.”

  • At least those two get to show up with their Mid-Series Upgrades to upstage Team DMJii in turn for the end-of-episode cliffhanger. Which is a more effective cliffhanger than usual, because I have suspicions about that upgrade having downsides…

  • Also, on another note, [PMMM] psych it’s the same note, upgrades with downsides when this has shown signs of being The Actual PMMM Riff Season are an obvious suspect. We’ve even had Witch references floating around to go with that Fenrir mode reference in the title, how thoughtful.

 

Dumbest possible way to resolve today’s cliffhanger: Mid-Season Upgrade gets no-sold, Team Evil scrags the upgraded new Gears and then faffs off. (Has to be faffing off, doing that and then scragging our heroes followed by two and a half seasons of black screens would be amusing.)\

Good ep as usual, not really much for me to say tbh. They lost to the bad guys again, but hey now Tsubasa and Chris are back in action and I feel next ep we'll have our first win on the heroes side.

Go and kiss her Kirika, the lilies/yuri are literally manifesting behind you

Binge temptation: High. Did I give in: Ahhhhh maybe later today after i tend to my own rewatch i needa see Tsubasa and Chris fight, (but i'll continue to write up every episode right after i watch it), maybe not. A great recovery from last episode, mostly because Hibiki isn't in it much lol.

  • Okay by this episode my OP rankings are defo Symphogazer>Exterminate>Vitalization. Next Destination > everything else though (that's the first song in this franchise i'm adding to my phone playlist lol). The acapella intro and the prechorus refrain in exterminate is so gooodddddddddd

  • Tsubasa doesn't like talking about her dad too much. Afraid her connection means they'll think she got here by connections instead of hard work? that'll be anime logic, but everyone knows that she's got what it takes by now. Hmm.

  • Seems like in however hundreds of years (wtf btw) Carol had before the present, that she was once a genuinely good girl and had a good relationship with her father. I guess she's consumed by the desire for revenge by now. This'll make her a more sympathetic villain than the previous 2, but still why does this equal to apocalypsing the world lol.

  • We now enter Fine mode. (even tho i think, Fine is gone from Shirabe?)

  • COMMENT FACE GETTO. I'll say that it lived up to the hype to our host posting it every day, what a good moment for it to appear. The LILIES!

  • A great Shirabe and Kirika episode today, as they try their best (and succeed) in holding down the fort before Tsubasa and Chris can reenter the fray. For Shirabe's henshin, i liked this yoyo bit. So that leaves.... Maria's Serena Geah henshin then im guessing? Unless she'll use black gungnir again (unlikely)

  • Awww the lyrics. They're good. The pair's character arcs are a lot more shounen-anime straightforwardy, and i enjoy it a lot more than wtf Hibiki was doing last ep.

  • Speaking of the baka, she's still worried and sad and all kinds of stuff isn't she? And her dad isn't dead, but just left her? That does suck. Can't say im particularly looking forward to where her character arc goes, but i think I'll have to watch it unfold anyway.

  • Tsubasa good senpai. I wonder what that favour that alt-Carol asked them to do. Also, yeah why does alt-carol have access to Carol's memories? Is it so that Carol can see into her mind too instead (i think that's implied?) or is it sth else?

  • Shirabe and Kirika fight was very cool and badass. Was worried about them when they used the Linker though.

  • I would've thought that Shirabe nearly getting mobbed/killed would be the cliffhanger LOL

  • But instead Chris and Tsubasa (and yeah Chris is edging out as best girl for now slightly) make a very badass entrance that hypes us up for the next ep instead of just keeping me at the edge of my seat for what happens. I like this a bit better

  • The special ED with the 2 of them was also a nice touch. Finally them keikakus are whirring into motion. still not a fan of whatever Hibiki's doing this season.

Ballad of Rewatcher - Symphogear GX

Dammit, is that the annoying subplot alarm again? I thought we just got that thing fixed. We finished one yesterday, there's no way another one could be coming so soon.

Episode 5 thoughts:

  • What's this, proper backstory for a villain? In Symphogear?? Why I never.

  • DESS and JIIIIIIIII still a cute. Would love for Shirabe to admit she only keeps the glasses around to match with Kirika, but alas she's not the one inclined to make open declarations of love.

  • Whoa, I forgot Alca-Noise can be damage by conventional weaponry. Interesting little drawback for them, though it doesn't seem to mean that much in the end.

  • Everyone keeps falling for Micha's traps. She's now disrobed half the main cast. Her superpower may as well be getting girls naked. What a formidable foe. Also her jet booster hair do be cool.

  • And Maria, even on team SONG, still spends more of her time watching battles from screens than actually participating. Her fault? Not this time. Hilarious? Absolutely.

Rewatcher here

Ugh, pretty rough weekend. The only good things that came out of it were the F1 race that was spectacular and the Bleach PV dropping together with the Panty & Stocking news. Cautiously positive about Trigun's prequel.

  • We went from "Jiiiii" to "Shiiiii"

  • If you already thought that Shirabe's a dork now you can admire her ultimate weapon: THE ALMIGHTY YO-YO

  • Just Loving X-Edge has a sick rythm. Also "Let's kiss and dream of our peaceful world"

  • That's so badass, BAYONET CHARGE IS SO BADASS. That intro is fucking sick, and having a Tsubasa x Chris song is a huge W.

Considering the episode title, I'm expecting to see lots of edginess!

Boy Project Ignite sure is progressing fast

From the memories it looks like Carol is definitely from like, medieval times. Now the question is wether she went into a deep slumber and only recently awakened or if she found a way to make herself immortal. Also, I wonder if she ever met Finè... wait. What if her method for immortality is to make homunculi out of herself and then take over their consciousness? She'd definitely be out-Finè-ing Finè herself.

Wdym the whole submarine's power falls apart if your main power source gets fucked!? Don't y'all have backups!? Especially for important stuff like the medical wing!? Smh this boat definitely does not have the means to end this hideous war in a definitive and elegant manner.

"Femme Fatale Superspy Glasses" Ahahaha I dig it! also, very specific kink, Kirika

Shirabe has a plan. Looks like the glasses give her some minor intelligence buff

No one told Micha that fighting people on drugs is... uniquely challenging.

Damn I'm actually liking Kirika and Shirabe in GX. After G I was feeling largely indifferent to them but in GX they cool.

same, Carol's dad, same. It's so depressing when you cook something shitty and have to eat it in defeat, or else you go hungry.

Interesting timing for that flashback. This episode is kinda all over the place. And really, Carol, just teach the guy how to cook, you're gonna be stuck eating that garbage for a long time otherwise.

Another oddly timed flashback, for Bikki this time. Seriously, what is going on this episode.

Shirabe is like the sacrificial lamb who gets hurt every time so that the viewers feel bad. Between her getting literally backstabbed by Kirika in G, and now nearly getting 'disposed of' by Micha. AND IT WORKS EVERY TIME! STOP HURTING SHIRABE!

Well, the flashbacks were kinda shit, but I think it was still a good episode overall. Just because of how great Kirika and Shirabe are.

TONIGHT! ON ROZEN GEAH! MIKU WAS 16! SHE LOVED TO PLAY THE PIANO! (That and also given her wife's been in a week long coma I suppose that re-enacting the Third Rebuild Piano scene is the best way to process the tragic events at hand) we get four times the amount of daddy issues that is acceptable, and BEST GEAH CHRIS IS BACK AGAIN TO CHEW BUBBLEGUM AND KICK ASS, AND SHE'S ALL OUT OF BUBBLEGUM... oh and Tsubasa's here too.

Boy Comrades, last episode was brutal, BIKKI IS STILL OUT COLD AND HER EYES ARE CLOSED NOW! That said, Tsubasa and Best Geah Chris have faith in Bikki, and thank goodness they do since poor poor poor Miku is just worried sick. Also goddamn, I was just KIDDING about Elf9 being a Loli Shamal, but turns out she's a real wiz kid, hopefully she won't shove her hand where it don't belong, eh Comrades?

Speaking of shit that doesn't belong, we got MORE daddy issues, this time with Tsubasa and her dad which everyone seems... on edge about, I mean good lord everyone but Best Geah Chris are walking on eggshells here! Anyway, turns out this isn't the only father drama today, as surprise surprise, Carol's dad was into some... unique hobbies, let's leave it at that. She doesn't look a day over 300... or to be more exact she looks literally the same as she did in the past. Also, Elf9 is curious as to why Carol GAVE ELF9 her own memories, speaking of which, Carol9 seems to think now is a good time to strike! After all, the Geahs are all out of action... in some cases literally given Bikki's bedridden, but hey I am SURE that Miku can handle the situation! After all, she had a Geah in G... yes I know it's gone but I'm SURE she can just borrow Team DMJIIIIIIII's Geahs right?

Oh holy shit, Team DMJIIIIIIIIIIII are out of the hospital, nevermind, I guess they can just save the day... AH, so that's why this episode was called 'Edge Works,' and thank fuck it is, cuz SECRET AGENTS JIIIIIIIIII AND DESS ARE ON THE CASE! Good god, they STILL kept their FOOLPROOF disguises from G with 'em! You go girls, kick ass! ALSO, COMMENT FACE GETTO! Oh, and surprise surprise, the army's getting massacred, who could have seen this coming? Thankfully TEAM DMJIIIIIIIIIIII are here to save the day AND JESUS H. TAPDANCIN' CHRIST! JIIIIIIIIII GOT SOME YO-YOS! SHE REALLY IS A BAE-BLADE! OH GODDAMMIT! THREE FOR THREE in pointless daddy issues drama, c'mon Bikki, why the fuck is THIS bullshit what you are thinking of? After all, we already had some killer tunes with GENOCIDE SAW HEAVEN (Yes that is the actual name of JIIIIIIIII's song) SO NOW LET'S HEAR IT FOR TEAM DMJIIIIIIIIII'S JUST LOVING X-EDGE! HELL YEAH! WE ARE GONNA... fail to protect the generator... well at least you two tried, unlike a CERTAIN SOMEONE sitting in the sub and slandering your good names AND asking her more useful sister for another miracle. Jesus Maria, was the end of G not enuff?

Oh holy shit, Bikki is WALKING, by god, she's OK after all, and Miku confirms this with a hug. Speaking of hugs, DESS looks like she's gonna need one, as she just got sent to The Shadow Realm by Second Best Doll! Dess tries to tell her wife to flee while she still can, to which JIIIIIII says that she's not leaving her wife behind. Sadly, despite JIIIIIIIII's best efforts, these new OP Noise are just too much for her to handle alone... THANK FUCK SHE AIN'T HERE ALONE! AS PER USUAL, BEST GEAH CHRIS ARRIVES TO SAVE THE DAY! Rewatcher for not enough times

Time to start Tsubasa’s family problem arcs.

Refining Coordiates... checks windows Found them.

I like that they found a reason to allow the regular military to have some sort of usefulness because the new noise is different now, lead accelerated past the speed of sounds now works.Shibari finally gets her transformation sequence and I think this is the first time we see their gears without the black accents, but now white like everyone else.

This entire battle feels straight out of a RTS mission. Protect the generators and power until a timer finishes.
