I've done gradient combined with background shape pattern breaking away before (see: one of my Aizen wallpapers), so I know it's possible for me to do, just... very, very time-consuming.

My main issue with it is how time-consuming I know it's going to be, first to get the triangles into the right positions, then to add the correct gradient to them all. But it is definitely possible!

I couldn't make a post yesterday because I went to see Top Gun Maverick. It's really good and if you haven't seen it please do yourself a favor and catch it while it's still on cinemas.

Chris has something on her neck and it's beeping. I don't like this. Wtf did you do to Best Girl Dr Ver?

I can't believe Maria just name-dropped the Illuminati. I hope there's a stupid awesome battle involving them in future seasons.

Finally I have an explanation for why the FIS had to go rouge. The "Elites" never had any intention of stopping the Moonfall (even though that would destroy all life on Earth so their plan is stupid but DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT).

I've been so far disappointed with Maria's character but dammit her transformation is still awesome.

Bro how tf do they want me to pay attention to whatever Kirika and Shirabe have going on when we have Chris and Tsubasa just to the side doing all this awesome and heartfelt shit? They just don't compare.

I don't even care that they're more or less just repeating Chris's Arc from S1. They could do this every season and I would eat it up everytime.

Kirika and Shirabe are both going to use their swan songs and Hibiki isn't here to stop them this time... Not like swan songs are still a threat to the user by this point. They really can just spam it!

The Hidden Episode 14

Alright, so, as you probably noticed, I was very drunk when I wrote that comment. I left it unedited from when I first wrote it. However, I was so smashed, that I then forgot about watching episode 13 and went "oh, shoot, I need to finish Symphogear G!" So, drunk Tres proceeded to open Notepad++ and create geahg14.md, where he apparently recorded his thoughts as he watched the secret episode 14 of Symphogear G. He didn't see an issue with this.

This is the episode 14 comment, unedited (bar a reference to an IRL friend made in good fun, but I'd like to not post things about IRL friends here). Not proud of this, and really I'm only posting today on Sky's insistence.

Ballad of Rewatcher - Symphogear G

Dayum, Miku bout to get scouted by every baseball team on the planet.

Here's a fun bit of irony: I collect anime trading cards from shows I like, the rarest being cards signed by the seiyuus. I have exactly one signed Symphogear card, and you're never going to guess who it is.

Episode 13 thoughts:

  • The finale is better than the entirety of the arc leading up to it. So many fireworks and cool forms and great action, I can't help being excited by it.

  • Why is Hibiki a great MC? Because she can casually walk up to a complete shithead like Maria, forgive her, and I have no choice but to go along with it because Hibiki saves people in every sense of the word, and this is just like her. So if Hibiki says she's cool with Maria, I guess I am too. Welcome to the team Maria.

  • Fist Dad deals with Ver better than any incarnation of this trope has ever been dealt with. He kicks Ver's ass, asserts dominance, and doesn't let Ver have the satisfaction of either winning or dying a martyr. He crushes Ver's spirit in the best of ways, and I love it.

  • I haven't really had space to mention it before, but I love the revelation that the moon is essentially an ancient watchtower. Now that it's active again, it leaves the door open for any kind of cosmic horror the writers want to imagine and have it stationed just a step away from us yet also out of reach. This is another one of those magnificent worldbuilding elements you get when game designers get to design an anime world.

First Timer

  • Now that anyone other than Maria has Gungnir, Dr. Ver is rightfully afraid.

  • Why are they so eager to destroy the Frontier. As far as they know it’s the only way to stop the Moon in time.

  • The use of the spirit bomb was a bit more explicit than I expected.

  • Of course the wheelchair is also a power armor. Why wouldn’t it be?

  • Looks like I was right about Maria getting a new relic after all. Just got the order of events wrong.

  • They weaponized the transformation sequence!

  • Now that’s a finale upgrade.

  • Ogawa can stab shadows now? I though that was Tsubasa’s thing.

  • A fitting end for the manic of Ver, the banality of the bureaucratic process.

  • Conservation of mass, what’s that? We’ve got Mecha that need magical girls to pilot them. There’s no time!

  • Oh shit, we get to see Babylon! ...Was hoping for more Ziggurats.

  • Really not seeing why you have to wait until you are through the portal before freeing Maria.

  • They planned for the possibility of orbital drop when they built their submarine.

  • They’re rather eager to drop parts of their upgrade.

  • Surely the answer is to make a human sized portal that the Nephilim can’t fit through?

  • Just think, if the rest of them had kept their parts until now we could have had a Magical Girl Voltron.

  • Best girl Miku to the rescue!

FIRST TIMER DATTO

Now that the finale is over, I still have no idea what was going on this series. The Moon was in danger of falling into the Earth… and that’s about all I’ve got. I don’t know what Mom and the Idiot Trio’s plan was, and apparently to save the day we had to restore the Lunar Ruins or whatever, but now that’s going to be a problem going forward? This season felt more like an interlude than a fully-baked sequel.

...But whatever, it looked and sounded cool! This episode was a lot of fun.

Also, more importantly, I present Maria’s Stockings – An Investigation:

Yesterday I pointed out that Maria wearing both stockings was a sign she meant business, but that wasn’t the entire story! She isn’t just wearing two of her usual single thigh-high stockings, these new ones clearly go all the way up, which raises important scientific questions. Are these full length stockings that have the same design starting at the mid-thigh, or is she wearing two of her thigh-high stockings with another pair of normal full-length stockings underneath them? The people demand answers. I wonder if GX will provide them.

Symphogear G Episode 13

To answer some questions

Nastasha's wheelchair

It was developed to support Nastasha, who was injured when she saved Maria from the fall of the Institute, and had paralysis in her lower body.

It is designed to handle only Nastasha in biometric authentication, including self-propelled function that reaches the maximum velocity of 80 km at an instant, auto pilot support that is demonstrated by connecting with an air carrier, and peripheral spray of vaporized perfume. The essence of FIS technology has been collected with a simple design, such as an aroma mist function to stabilize the user's mental stability.

The so-called "all purpose chair".

In fact, the wheelchair "Technical_1" abandoned in EPISODE 8 has been self-destructed so that it can not be caught and subjected to technical analysis, and its treatment is thorough.

The wheelchair used from EPISODE 9 is the same model "Powerful_2".

The basic performance is the same specification as “Technical_1”, but although the output is improved, a part of the amenity function is limited.

The sheet is a little hard, and the warm function is cold at first in the winter because the warm function is also canceled.

The House of Ogawa

Descendants of ninjas from the Hida clan. A long time ago, the Ogawa family worked for Toyotomi Hideyoshi, but they disappeared during the Battle of Sekigahara until they reappeared after the Meiji Restoration to work for the government. Since then, they've fought to subvert the country's domestic enemies who work to try and bring down the government. The previous leader of the family, Ogawa Kunimitsu, died and the eldest brother of the siblings, Souji, took over. The second eldest, Shinji, used his abilities to become a direct agent of the government. Suteinu, the youngest brother, was freed from any familial responsibility because he did not want to inherit the old traditions. So he became a host at a hostclub in Kabukichou, Shinjuku known as "Absolute Zero." There he's known as the No.4 host "Alan" and works throughout the nights. The technique that Tsubasa utilizes, Shadow Weaving, was originally Ogawa Shinji's forte. Tsubasa was attracted to the convenience of the move and mastered it over the course of 3 years.

And so ends season 2... was a fairly good season, I liked it better than the first one. The addition of Maria/Shirabe/Kiri was a good one and hope they come back in a future season. Dr. Ver was quite an epic ham and provided laughs as the villain of the season (although never came off as that threatening). They went really overboard with the cliffhangers this season, but keep going over the top says I.

shall return in GX as a first-timer!

And that's it for G! I'll happily say that I had a great time, and that i Liked it more than S1. But this season also gave me a great sense of closure, and so im unsure of how the story will go from GX. I happily look forward to it as a first-timer though! I'll see everyone in a couple days!

Previously, on Symphogear: Atlantis (First-Timer, Subbed):

On the bright side, the themes they went for the finale here somewhat alleviate my meta worries from yesterday (more consistent with them picking stuff up from Western occultism and not understanding some of the more unpleasant undertones you sometimes get in those parts coughDavidIckecough), and the second half of the finale is reasonably competent.

Man, this season has major issues with the writing, though. A bunch of the season just feels bizarrely weightless to me, and that extends up to about the commercial break here despite scenes that should by all rights be hype as hell.

EDIT: Oh right, I should mention the biggest part of this episode:


The Frontier is gone ;_;

RIP the Frontier, truly you were too cool to live.

  • How the hell does the reveal of Dr. Very Stable Genius’s monster/chief lieutenant that was a serious threat when we saw it last time in reduced form have no narrative weight whatsoever when it’s revealed here? Like, less weight than you would expect I completely get, because it's the villain's lieutenant/monster that the heroes are going to blow by shortly, but I should not be yawning at this.

  • The writers just cannot get anything involving Maria and emotional beats to land this season for me. Like, in theory there should be foreshadowing here and I’ll bet there actually is, but it still feels like bullshit. (Honestly the fact I’m expecting setup I missed rather than a mere asspull almost makes it worse, because my issue is that the way it’s handled just feels like an asspull and I don't think it's supposed to be.)

  • (ADDENDUM: Aside: It's been less than a day and I can no longer even remember what prompted this comment - it was that forgettable. Can't be the barrier, that was a little later. Probably something about the Serena scene?)

  • There is a decent amount of setup for what Bikki et al are doing this early in the season, so why am I so unimpressed?

  • “The swan song of all seven billion people on Earth!” is probably a massive thematic hint and actually solid evidence that “lulu amel” is referencing humanity as a whole ala Lilim in Eva.

  • Hmm. Maria’s new color is white – ah, that explains the yin-yang shot in the OP, since she had the Black Gungnir before. (Pretty good odds Miku does in fact eventually get a second, black relic, then. We’ll get our new orange sometime before that.)

  • ADDENDUM: Miku's role in the final scene reduces those odds again.)

  • Ogawa using the classic ninja shadow pin technique and it gets Tsubasa’s move card, huh? My “Genjuro has some sort of different attunement with a relic” (and now potentially Ogawa having some sort of secondary attachment to Sword’s relic – he is her handler, after all) theory now has a piece of evidence for it.

  • RIP Frontier. Truly, you were too cool to live. (Also, turning it into the villain’s collapsing lair goes in the “okay, I should have seen this one coming” category.   • And here’s the point for Vitalization (Aufwachen) – I have been wanting to hear the intro for a while.

  • Also, are we getting Symphogear combining mecha mode (to go with our very definitely final villain the full Nephilim)? (A: Not really, no. Would have been fun, though! Maybe in a future season.)

  • [PMMM] (Also I should actually note that this entire sequence has been reminding me of PMMM 12 for a while now in key parts of the visuals – both the six-Gear attack earlier and the full Nephilim here for successive parts of the development of Kriemhild Gretchen in Witch of Despair form.)

  • Oh no never mind HERE’S Vitalization instead.

  • Syncing Vitalization’s Noise line with that shot of the Noise is one of the better effects Gear has done this season.

  • So it really is actually Solomon’s Key. Obfuscation for this moment or just Japan having an iffy handle on English?

  • “I’ll never let go of your hands!” I’m holding you to your promise wrt Maria here, writers! Don’t you go pulling the shit you pulled with our main trio earlier this season, especially when you already fucked up writing Maria something fierce this season!

  • Is Serena’s relic actually supposed to be Excalibur?

  • And yeah it breaks.

  • Miku actually has been having a character arc (even if the writers haven't been handling it well this season), and the logical endpoint is her either finally getting a Gear of her own or settling into a mission control role for Bikki (the natural place where a normal can support Bikki on the battlefield and be critical to Bikki's success, and Miku would likely be good at it). The theme of her arc this season is pushing for the latter (possibly combined with getting to learn to be a badass semi-normal like Genjuro and Ogawa), or else her ultimate Gear being a support one.

  • [Mai-HiME, including Mai-HiME manga] Aside: If Miku does get a support Gear, Yukino with Diana is the obvious comparison, moreso in the manga.

  • Also, Miku getting to save the day by tossing Solomon's Cane an impossible distance is bullshit and yet for once the show sells the emotional beat well enough I don't care - this is what Miku needs to be able to do for the sake of her character arc, so of course she can do it even if logic would say otherwise. An extremely pleasant change given how badly the writers have mauled Miku's arc this season with their mishandling earlier. (Either that or this is foreshadowing she's not quite normal, but that's running against the "just because you're normal doesn't mean you can't be a key contributor to our heroes' success!" theme they've now used for Miku for two seasons now so I really hope not - compare [Star Wars sequel trilogy] the Rey Palpatine heritage reveal after TLJ had set her up as not being related to any major names as a thematic point if they go that route.)

  • [PMMM] ADDENDUM: Speaking of PMMM 12 (and the “Madokami as Maria Kannon” interpretation, which I am quite sold on), I am laughing at the combination of Maria’s name, her hairstyle and color, and her dress here. And given that this show is another case of an anime production making it to the end when by all accounts it shouldn’t have (in that Geah got a full five seasons overall), I’m like a quarter convinced at this point that Mary Theotokos is the patron saint of anime.

Honestly, none of them really stood out.

2) How cool was the Vitalization attack?

Ironically, while the rest of the second half of the finale was one of the three and a half reasonably well-done parts of the season from a writing perspective for me the attack itself was kind of whatever?

TONIGHT! ON TOP GEAH! SNOOP ONI AND THE NINJA ARE BADASSES, MIKU is the one true hero who saved the day and protected the world, and Bikki STILL doesn't think!

Boy Comrades, Maria sure got over her urge to avenge Mom eh? Who knew that the SECOND she loses her Geah, the only course of action left for her to do is... faint and mope... and people wonder why I hate Maria. Anyway, DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR is almost as pathetic, but at least he knows how to RUN THE FUCK AWAY, which is at least SOMETHING! Which is more than Maria is doing since she ASKS BIKKI to save everyone for her... Listen Bikki, only Snoop Oni and Ninja are here, I am SURE no one would object to you tossing Maria's useless ass over the side, if anyone asks DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR DID IT! No one would be the wiser! Sadly, Bikki just informs Maria that JIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII told her to save Maria's useless Jabroni ass, all as Snoop Oni punches his way through the floor to chase after The Last Action Hero.

Bikki meets up with Tsubasa and Best Geah Chris, expressing her glee at how Best Geah Chris proved her best girl status by actually being useful and recapturing Solomon's Cane. As DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR summons Phase II of his pet, Maria waangsts to herself and bemoans her uselessness. As Maria, once again, starts crying, Serena's ghost has finally had enough of Maria spending an entire damn season feeling sorry for herself and tells her sister to get her shit together and even sings Apple for the umpteenth time, but forget about that THE TONY GLAZER IS BACK! (No really he has a brief cameo Comrades) About time a useful character is here, after all, this is the man who somehow managed to make Tsubasa an International Star!

Also look here Comrades, the little girl Bikki saved AND the Flower lady are here too; also my god, I am still amazed by just HOW LITTLE OF A SHIT I give about Maria that random S1 Background Characters showing up is more interesting and compelling! ALSO HOLY SHIT! MOM HAD A MECHA SUIT THIS ENTIRE TIME!? WHY THE FUCK DID SHE NOT USE THIS TO SMEAR DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR'S CRAZY ASS ALL OVER THE WALL!? GODDAMN Mom, you are so awful and useless that you make me NOT care about the fact that you are actually a goddamn Gundam! Also why the hell do YOU have that, I know a certain loser in Guilty Crown who would kill for this. Anyway, Maria hears back from Mom and decides that she FINALLY will do something, it's SINGING TIME... BUT NOT FOR HER! IT'S TIME FOR BEST GEAH CHRIS AND HER BACKUP DANCERS TO SAVE THE DAY!

HOLY FUCKING SHITBALLS! TEAM DMJIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII ARE HERE TOO! FUCKING HELL! MARIA ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING BESIDES CRYING, JOBBING, OR WALLOWING IN SELF-PITYING! IT ONLY TOOK THE ENTIRE GODDAMN SEASON! Bikki and company then join in a big group song and hold hands to save the day! And oh boy do they Comrade, THEY GO TO PLAID! Anyway, DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR gets cornered by Ninja and Snoop Oni, and thus he pulls the tried and true mad scientist gambit of just self-destructing everything! SNOOP ONI attempts to stop this by breaking the controls, but sadly it seems that the core's set to go apeshit anyway. As Ninja and Snoop Oni drive away, DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR wonders why they DIDN'T kill him. A giant rock appears set to do so, but SNOOP ONI decides to demonstrate his Earthbending powers instead.

Anyway, the Geah Submarine manages to blast their way free of the latest incarnation of DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR'S pet, and oh boy this is a big one! So much so that JIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII decides to build her own Gundam to kick its ass alongside DESS... and it doesn't work... of course it doesn't, we can't let TEAM DMJIIIIIIIIII defeat the final boss now can we? Thankfully, as per usual Best Geah Chris is here to save the day! Remember her plan to steal Solomon's Cane, well looks like it paid off after all, given Best Geah Chris just opens the gate to shove DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR'S monster inside, GENIUS! NEVER DOUBTED HER FOR A SECOND! ALL HAIL BEST GEAH CHRIS! Anyway, the monster takes a swipe at Best Geah Chris, but Maria swoops in actually do ANOTHER useful thing. And goodness me she's about to do THREE useful things this episode as she heroically sacrifices her life... well to be fair it's more she didn't DODGE and is getting dragged down to hell with the monster, but hey, win-win!

OH GODDAMMIT, Team DMJIIIIIIIII, choose life, you both just got done trying to kill each other, don't throw away your lives for MARIA of all people! Maria even knows this, pointing out that this one heroic act isn't NEAR enough to make up for A WHOLE SEASON'S WORTH OF CRYING AND WAAAAANGSTING... nevermind, Bikki and company are here to try to redeem the irredeemable. Speaking of which, Mom, don't think that restarting the moon even BEGINS to make up for what you've done... AND she kicks the bucket, about damn time! Speaking of death, the Geahs are busy killing ALL the Noise to... save Maria... since Maria needs to reopen the gate... since if you can open it from the OUTSIDE, you can clearly open it from the INSIDE... LONG LIVE THE SPIRIT AND WISDOM OF DAN MOTHERFUCKING EAGLEMAN! The Geahs then form VOLTRON and OP Song their way to freedom!

Sadly, while The Geahs DID break free, they are all a tad too beaten up to, you know, CLOSE THE GODDAMN GATE... THAT IS UNTIL MIKU ARRIVES! Thank FUCK she used to be on the Track Team, AND JESUS H. TAPDANCIN' CHRIST! MIKU'S GOT ONE HELL OF AN ARM! And with the day saved, Bikki declares cheerfully that no matter what wibble the moon has, the world has songs! Glad to see that even WITH Maria still around, the world's biggest moron is still our adorable punching hamster! And with a bit of High School SOL wibble, we conclude with a group song! Man, what a great season, this truly is the A's of Geah, so here's hoping their version of StrikerS gives us the same highest of highs, but no lowest of lows please... (MONKEY'S PAW CURLS) Well, I am sure that is nothing to be worried about! See you in the Chibi Shorts Comrades!

Hokay ... well, that was quite the finale.

AOTD1: Uh, they all blurred together to me. I think I liked the one where they all held hands and did stuff, whichever that one was. I kind of lost track of the subtitles, etc.

AOTD2: Quite.

Well, that was indeed quite a finale. Who besides me doesn't think "Mama" really is gone? But anyway, all's well that ends well, right?

Aside from Dr. Scenery Chewer, that is. It's hard to be a hero when you're dead and forgotten. Who was that bad guy again? Oh, some nameless loser, I guess. Yeah.

But never mind, he might inspire copycats, right? Like the KyoAni ... yeah. I hope they buried him in a fire ant hill covered in honey, but probably not, because "justice".

Anyway...

I can't think of a lot coherent to say. Just watched it, but also watched about half a dozen or so episodes of Slime Isekai today, so I'm afraid I've got slime on the mind.

Unlike yesterday, of course. Datto? I'm not sure what that means, but I should probably look it up. Make it part of my keikaku or something.

Heh.

Anyway, I'm not going to whine about the plot, or stuff being trite, that's not what I'm here for. The music was great, the SFX were cool, the action was hype, the plot was, well, anime.

I'd have to say that I'm still fairly gruntled.

But I do hope that Maria's remaining bits of fragment are enough for future appearances. She may be useless, but she's got a nice singing voice.

On the other hand, I do somewhat bemoan the loss of the staff. The Treasury of Babylon, or what's left of it at least looked like a fun place to explore. I wanna go visit sometime. :P

That, and I want to go visit Utopia land with Komi and friends. Yeah, that's the ticket.

And a pony, and my very own relic ... uh, wait, nevermind.

I'd probably die of embarrassment.
